Best Xiao Long Bao restaurants in Yangon By Min Pyae Sone
A burnt tongue may not be a great experience but it’ll leave it numb for days to come, however, the explosion of taste and savoriness will make your tummy begging for more. Traditionally, Xiao Long Bao is steamed in a bamboo basket called Xiaolong and still is to this day. They also are frequently mistaken with American or British dumplings, which are totally different. Here are some known locations in Yangon for these warm parcels of pleasure. 800 Bowls Chinese Restaurant One of the best places to get yourself a steamy basket of Xiao Long Bao, 800 is just at the corner of 48th x Mahabandoola, serving Chinese traditional dishes along with handmade noodles. Their Xiao Long Bao has a lusciously sweet broth with its chewy and finely ground morsels of pork or crab; the wrappers are also very thin but it wraps around the filing and holds itself pretty well. 800 bowls may have good Xiao Long Bao, but it also has one of the best La Mian or Chinese noodles downtown. The inside is pretty packed—but don’t worry, you’ll be able to choose a table from both floors of the spacious restaurant. Xi Yang Yang If you live in Sanchaung, why don’t you try Xi Yang Yang. With loads of soup, Xi Yang Yang is generous when it comes to its clear yet rich broth which is, according to its regulars, the highlight of the shop. While the wrappers aren’t that thin, it still gives you a good chew without having to try that hard. Perhaps you should check in sometimes to quench your thirst for Xiao Long Bao. HongBao Dim Sum If you’re from China and you’re getting really homesick, we recommend you try HongBao as it’s well-known among the Chinese community for having some of the best Dim Sum dishes in town. While its prices aren’t exactly “Oriental House,” it’s certainly worth it, considering the quality. Xiao Long Bao here aren’t really their specialty but that doesn’t mean it’s bad. It’s a very cozy space, equipped with those thick revolving tables, where you can enjoy breakfast with the family or loved ones. Imperial Garden Not normally known for its Xiao Long Bao, but rather its amazing arsenal of Dim Sum, Imperial Garden sounds like a cliche among many Chinese restaurants in Yangon—maybe even worldwide. The filing is okay, not something that spectacular but it’s decent nevertheless. The restaurant’s wrapper is notoriously thick, so it will definitely remind you why strong jaws are important. To be frank, we suggest you go there for the Dim Sum but if you can’t help it, try the Xiao Long Bao. Decor-wise, Imperial Garden will not disappoint. They, like almost every high-end restaurant in Myanmar Plaza, take their interior design seriously—at least your experience would be comfy! Address: 192 Kaba Aye Pagoda Road. White Cottage Restaurant & Nude Bar: Splendour yet equitable price Not far from the popular spots of Bahan and Yankin townships, sits the White Cottage restaurant & Nude Bar, a new, cozy and secluded place in the Golden Valley—making it a great spot for an around-the-corner getaway from the bustling city. The inviting decor combines elements of contemporary chic that special the antique materials used in literally everywhere. A small pool area just beside the cottage is accordingly available at a daily rate of 10000 Kyats per pax—such a good price for a unique swimming experience offered. Wait, there’s more—lots of seating options are open either indoor or outdoor as well as beside the pool or on the terrace so you can impress your business partners—or even a hot date if you will. So what about food? It’s only their soft opening period but seemingly so far, the carte is reasonably priced given their fancy decor and the place which gives rise to their dishes that are classic yet innovative, satisfying yet tantalizing. They offer nine weekly business lunch sets and one Afternoon Tea Set at the price of 20000 Kyats or less. Italian food and Asian food for less than 12000MMKs, and the main courses and signature dishes for less than 40000 Kyats do sound appealing. Most of the prices are surprisingly lower than the ones stated above, really. Their array of the wine collection is quite impressive, ranging from red wine, white wine champagne to rose wine with their vintages stated. Beers that come in big beer mugs just like the old days, their signature cocktails and various kinds of liquors they have are among the best qualities of this Nude bar. Plus, the happy hour promotion is available on certain items from 3 pm to 6 pm. Another bold move here—they are planning to establish a gymnasium right in the compound—the membership accompanied by specific promotions on the restaurant and the access to the pool as well as the health and fitness bar which would make you feel “homey.
