For years, sports men and women have had the benefit of coaching for as long as anyone can remember, so why can't we apply the same principles to life coaching? The answer is simply that we can and many people do! It's a largely untapped way to unlock your potential and help you focus on your goals to get more out of your life. So what is life coaching and how can life coaching help you balance your life and obtain the success you deserve? Coaching is commonly mistaken with mentoring but in fact these techniques while both useful in their own way, are entirely different. Coaching is a method of directing, instructing and training a person or group of people, with the aim to achieve some goal or develop specific skills. Mentoring is a development method whereby a more experienced person passes on specific knowledge and advice to a less experienced person referred to as a protégé. The key difference is that the coach does not require to be an expert in the subject they are coaching, unlike a mentor. The art of coaching is to provide a framework around the development to provide direction and motivation. This is particularly useful in life coaching as the coach will most certainly not be an expert in your life - as you are the expert! But, their role would be to ask challenging questions, prompting you to realise the goals you set. Coaching is not about learning from someone else, it is really a sounding board to let you share your goals and dreams, then set achievable steps along the way. Over the past few years, more and more senior executives are turning to coaching to provide a way to improve their work life balance and take a step back from their hectic lives. It can be a lonely existence at the top of a company and taking time to reflect and realign can provide the motivation you need. But, life coaching is not reserved for the rich and powerful. It can really transform anyone's life if taken seriously and applied correctly. In particular, life coaching can really come into its own when applied to motivating, delegating, problem solving, goal setting and relationship issues as it provides a structured framework to probe the issue, set action steps and make progress. This is just one of the techniques used by the most successful men and women in the world to stay ahead, but it is probably one of the most powerful.
