Covid has changed the way a lot of us interact with each other and the world. Many businesses were forced to be innovative and adapt to the changing environment. Some businesses could not pivot, while others transformed how they did business to better connect with their clients. One thing that we are confident of is that our community is resilient. We have had the privilege of interviewing many of these amazing people and businesses and sharing their stories with our community.

Our Mission

To facilitate and cultivate a cohesive ecosystem of the local black community to inspire, innovate and connect local areas together.

Our V i s ion | A Lo ve Tha t N e ver Fa i l s We often worry that we don’t have enough resources in our community to go around. When we see someone in our community doing what we do but better, we get a little nervous or intimidated. Instead of using competition to spur on our creativity, teamwork, work ethic and innovation, we become soo overwhelmed with our own fears and insecurities that we gossip, sabotage, or hurt one another. This has happened to many exceptional people in our community.

We need to do better and lead by example. Our love for each other needs to be greater than our fear of failure. If we had to simplify into one word what My Black Colorado is about, it would be LOVE! Because Love is patient, love is kind. It does not envy, it does not boast, it is not proud. It does not dishonor others, it is not selfseeking, it is not easily angered, it keeps no

record of wrongs. Love does not delight in evil but rejoices with the truth. It always protects, always trusts, always hopes, always perseveres. Love never fails. When people come in contact with our brand, that’s what I want them to experience. It‘s not an easy aspiration to live up to, but we believe it‘s worth fighting for and it‘s what we need as a community.

what this is.” So I would research to see what they do? Why is it in there? I would see it in so many different products, even those ones that claimed to be all natural. Having a degree in science, I’ve been in the laboratory. I’ve learned the chemistry of certain ingredients; organic chemistry and things like that. I had a basic knowledge of some of the things, and being able to research on my own, just you made me feel a whole lot better about the purity of my natural product. What are your most popular products? And why do people love them? The most popular ones are the ones that I customize. Those are the butter cream, and the butter scrub. I usually offer those in a gift set. Hair and body gift sets. Each gift set is customizable. My customers love to be able to choose their own scent that is all natural. My customers love to customize the butter cream with different herbs or oils, and they love to have a customized label on the lid or on the product. Being able to bring them something that is more personal and customized is an amazing feeling, and they truly love that.

C HER I E CE PE T E R S ON

So what was one of the most important lessons you’ve learned while running your business?

INTERVIEW

Owner Of Natural Urbanity Denver, CO

So Cheriece, why did you start your business? I started my business, initially, because there was a lack of affordable products at the time. I was transitioning my hair from wearing a relaxer to being natural, and because I have a large family, I couldn’t afford any good products. I went to YouTube and started researching how I could make some basic products. One of my coworkers was like, “Well, I’ll buy some from you.” And I said, “Really? Okay!”

Pg. 10 |Vendor Inter view

She was my first customer, and then it just evolved from there. I just wanted to be able to have something that worked for my hair and my family’s hair and skin. It just opened up a whole new world for me. Most products have way too many chemicals inside of them. I started researching labels, and I started looking at the chemicals and the ingredients and said, “Why is that even in there? What is that?” Knowing that my product is natural gave me confidence and peace of mind.

That it’s hard. Being a business owner is hard. It’s not just about making products and selling them. There’s so much more that goes into it. You have to think about meeting customer’s expectations all the time, and to be able to pivot if something isn’t working right. It can be overwhelming. Being flexible and knowing that taking care of a business is almost like taking care of a baby. It requires a lot of attention, and that it’s harder than it looks and seems. T he 4 89 C ol l e cti o n | 720-523-3441 t h e489col l ection.com What was one of the most important lessons you learned running your own business? That there is more inside of me than I ever imagined. I feel like I sat on the thought of entrepreneurship for so long because I didn’t think I could be a self-starter. I felt like once I, “got everything together,” then I could take the leap. Then I realized there is no “perfect time”. I changed my focus from what I couldn’t do to what can I do to make this happen? What is the thing you are most proud of when it comes to your business? Definitely most proud of my creative process. Every time I sit down to begin working on a design idea, I start daydreaming about a new cool design or color scheme to try. I work really hard at growing in my craft. I am constantly seeking knowledge to get better. What is your definition of success?

A NG E L I QU E S COT T

Living my life according to God’s plan for me. I never dreamed I would be here. I am a new business owner, so it’s still kind of surreal to me, but I’m grateful for the opportunity. Everything is not perfect, and I’m still learning, but I’m out here giving it my all. That makes me feel successful.

INTERVIEW

What 1 piece of advice would you give to your consumers?

Owner Of the 489 Collection Colorado Springs, CO

Why did you start your business?

What are your most popular products?

Honestly, my answer to that question isn’t why; but why not? I was diagnosed with cancer in 2016. By the grace of God, I’m still here. My intent for the rest of the time He gives me is to live my life to the absolute fullest. I’m an accessory fanatic, especially earrings. Big, bold, unique statement pieces are my thing, so the thought of creating them for other women to enjoy makes me super happy.

I would say my most popular designs are my abstracts and the Africa-shaped earrings. I recently did a collection tribute to the late Chadwick Boseman for his role as the Black Panther. Those are a big hit and my personal favorite so far. I think people love them because they do make a bold statement of black pride and self-love.

Pg. 12 |Vendor Inter view

Advice I would give is to enjoy being yourself. Embrace your uniqueness. I would like my consumers to know this accessory line was created specifically for black women. The world, specifically America is always taking shots at black women. We are told it’s wrong to be ourselves, but others get praised for emulating us. I wanted a space to celebrate us, bring us together, and support one another. Every woman rocking The 489 Collection can relate to one another in some way. Everything I produce is hand painted and is one of a kind. Everything within each individual collection is similar but never duplicated. Each piece is unique in it’s own way.

but crystallization is actually a good thing! Our raw honey is never heated, so you get all the flavor of the crystallization. Those, store bought honeys, lose all the goodness of that, so people love buying ours. What is one of the most important things that you’ve learned from your business? I had to become aware of all the cracks and crevices within my house. It only takes three eighths of an inch for a colony of bees to move into a structure. You definitely don’t want bees moving into the structures because then you have to physically open the cavity to remove them. Some people decide to use pesticides to seal them in which is a horrible idea because the bees will then start to die and decay within the structure. The good thing is that most pesticide companies won’t even do it. When using pesticides, the honey, wax, and bees are sealed into the structure which can attract rodents and other pests as well. If it’s not sealed correctly, other bees will come in (we call them robber bees) and try to “clean up” any residual honey from the previous colony. These robber bees may take the pesticides back to their colony, which can be detrimental to them.

LA ZA R U S FI E LD S

What is the thing that you’re most proud of when it comes to your business?

INTERVIEW

Owner Of Fields Of Natural Honey Colorado Springs, CO

Fields of Natural Honey is a honey company owned by Lazarus Tyson Fields. Their products and services include all natural honey, honeycombs, beeswax, colony propagation and bee hive removal. They are passionate about sharing the importance of the preservation and regeneration of the honey bee population. When did you first start your business? In 2008, I started keeping bees and a buddy of mine helped me to build a website. It’s really been growing steadily ever since then. Pg. 14 |Vendor Inter view

What are some of your most popular honey products, and why do customers love them? Every hive is different. When it comes to the ultimate flavor and taste of the honey, that’s directly related to where the hive is and the resources around it. A lot of customers like that our honey is raw, so you can get some of the pollen particles in it, as well as the beeswax.

I am always having fun, and at the end of the day, I am keeping my bees alive without the use of treatments. A lot of beekeepers treat their bees with harmful chemicals for Varroa mites, a pest similar to ticks or fleas to a cat or dog, that is parasitic. I am very proud of myself for being able to keep my bees alive with minimal intervention and (no Varroa mite) treatments. Depending on what chemical or treatment other beekeepers use, there’s a possibility that the chemical residue will get into the honey, wax, and honeycomb products. I’m happy that my customers don’t have to worry about that with my products. Interview by Talisa Caldwell

I was just trying to figure out another creative Outlet i could use to create. I wanted to do something that was really going to be inspiring and not feel like I have to let go of my creativity. Through visioning and tapping into a spiritual place,I thought of Gem Scents Aromatics. It was something that I was very passionate about and that was kind of like how I started. I have MS and so, you know, it was just a challenge. And so that’s It in a nutshell of how Gem Scents Aromatics was created. What are your most popular products and why people love them?

SPI R I T COR LE Y

My most popular products or my aromatic body oils. They’re made from imported oils. They are uncut oils and essential oils from all around the globe and they’re highly concentrated and very unique. I have a gift of scent and so I’m able to really create scents that are very unique and my customers are really drawn to that. Body oils really complement an individual’s body chemistry. One person can wear an aroma and it may smell differently than how it was smelling on someone else. and that’s one of my most popular products because that’s what I’m known for. Another one is my foaming salt scrubs because of salts come from the Dutch West Indies and during the slave trade those salts were very highly prized, and they still are. so that’s another one of my popular products.

Owner Of Gem Scents Aromatics Aurora, CO

So what is your name and why did you start your business? My name is Spirit Corley. I’m the owner and Creator Gem Scents aromatics a collection of natural bath and body products. It’s an interesting story as to why I started my business as I did. I’ve always been the kind of person who has loved natural aromas, and natural products. Being a vegan, and a very conscious eater, I’m really into fitness. Products that I put on my body are just as important as what I put In my body. I used to always just make things for myself. I’m originally from Southern California born and raised but I’ve been in Colorado since 2004 and so I just carried on with that passion up until the present day. It was an ironic thing that happened that I think inspired me to actually create a business from a passion that I’ve always had personally. I developed an auto-immune disorder several years ago or more and during that time I used to Design jewelry. I have some celebrity clients in LA being from the industry. I’ve been on the cover of Essence magazine. I’ve been in lots of television shows. So I had a following of friends from

What is one of the most important lessons you learned while running your business? I think as far as a lesson learned is that you have to always be very authentic. What is good for you may not be good for someone else and vice versa. You have to really have a good foundation, you know having good support behind you in order to just stay focused. You can get really distracted. And so one of the lessons I’ve learned recently is just to really stay in my Lane. Interview By Camiio Patton

One of the most popular flavors here in Colorado is the Rocky Mountain Honey. Number one because I use the name Rocky Mountain Honey. They love that. What I did was source a whole bunch of honeys, tested them all out, and I picked the particular honey that I think they like. I have several popular flavors of pound cakes, and Rocky Mountain Honey is the most popular. People also love the peanut butter and banana pound cake. I use a special peanut butter, and some banana extract and yeah, it’s pretty good. What was one of the most important lessons you learned while running your own business? I think that one of the most important lessons I’ve learned is to delegate. I can’t do everything on my own. I’m a small business, and I had to learn to get help. I could try to do it on my own, but it’s not going to work. I learned the hard way that I have to get people involved. Me, and my business will not grow unless I get people involved. I can try and do it on my own and overwhelm myself and that’s when everything falls.

I was able to take it to him in Atlanta and present it to him at his studio right before he had the big gala! What is one piece of advice you would give your consumers?

THOMA S L OCK HA R T

INTERVIEW

Owner Of New Life Designs Aurora, CO

Why did you start your business?

What are your most popular products?

I am a fine artist. My business consists of fine art, illustration, and graphic design, but I’m pushing more into the fine art side right now. When people view my art, I want them to love what they see, gain some inspiration for their day or lifetime, and encourage them in some way. I want people to gravitate towards my art and see it as an amazing piece to add to their home, business or to give as a gift to someone else.

I use a variety of mediums, so I have to say my art style, since that would encompass it all. People find my art very inspiring. It helps them to think. It helps them be motivated and to push forward in life through all the issues of the world that are going on today. What is one of the most important lessons you learn from running your own business? That there are times where you must be able to do it all, especially in the beginning.

Pg. 22 |Vendor Inter view

The advice I would give to my consumers is to purchase what you love. Think about it as something that is going to be around for a long period of time. When you purchase something cheap, it’s going to be okay for a short period of time, but then it breaks, or it loses its value. It’s important to purchase quality, especially when dealing with art. You’re buying something as an investment for your family. So many people don’t realize that art is an investment just like real estate or the stock market. It’s something that you can use at a different time if you have to end up selling it later on. Art holds its value for the most part. What I want my consumers to know about me is that I put a lot of value, a lot of time, lot of effort, and a lot of research into my work as I cultivate my pieces. I’m a mixed media artist, so I put a lot of imagery into my pieces. I love color, and I love being able to create something that will bring life to someone’s home or their business. Since I make small batches made to order, I can afford to let customers have options. I didn’t realize that there was such a large community of people that wanted to be able to choose their roast level! I get a lot of people that love my dark roast. What is one of the most important lessons that you learned while running your own business? When I first started out, I didn’t realize how much time I would spend on packaging my products. I spend a lot of time packing everything up, and making sure it looks really presentable, so that when people open their package, it’s a positive experience. I don’t think my customers realize how much time that actually takes on my end. Still, it’s something that I really enjoy doing because I am an artist first and foremost. Creating the art on my products is a lot of fun for me. What is the thing that you’re most proud of when it comes to your business?

KA I LA NI D OB S ON

I’m proud of the collaborative nature of my business, and how it’s more than just coffee. Each bag has a piece of artwork on it, so my customers can choose to throw it away they want, but it’s also something that’s worth keeping for a bit and maybe even hanging up on the fridge!

of coffee roasters. I bought a small drum roaster that I could use at home and started to make little micro-batches.

When did you first start your business?

I get a lot of customers who are excited about the fact that I let people choose their roast level. Most roasters will choose for you; they roast all the beans themselves, they taste it, and then decide which roast it tastes best at (light, medium, dark etc.). They don’t give customers an option to choose their own for a particular type of bean.

I actually started roasting at home during the COVID-19 quarantine. I wanted to still be a part of the coffee community, just not physically, so I decided to act, and I did a bunch of research on different types

Pg. 24 |Vendor Inter view

What are some of your most popular coffees, and why do people love them?

It’s important to me to create something that people can use more than just once. I use sustainable packaging and get my beans from ethical sources. There is a lot of slave work and child labor that is happening within the coffee community, and some large coffee roasting companies don’t care about who they get their beans from or how they were made. I think that it is really important to know where your beans are coming from, so that you can enjoy your coffee knowing that it wasn’t made from someone else’s suffering. Written by Talisa Caldwell

After that, we came out with a face mask. That’s selling pretty well. We only have five products currently. We’re coming out with more. I would say they also sell really well. The products cater to different groups of people, and they exist for so many different reasons. The body butters and the body scrubs are for everybody. It’s great for moisture. The yoga mat spray is great for Yogi’s. It’s all natural. People also use it as a furniture spray or as a deodorant. We also have the pain style, which is great. That’s for people who have minor aches and pains. That can be for athletes and yogis alike. It can also be used for people who have arthritis or chronic pain. We also came out with a hand sanitizer to address the needs of the community, since there were no hand sanitizers at the time. Those are most of our products. They all sell pretty well. Where did the name Jo’s Body Shop come from?

INTERVIEW

Owner Of Jo’s Body Shop Denver, CO

Why did you start your business? Over the last few years I basically just felt the natural progression of my life. I started practicing yoga and becoming more aware of what goes into my body and on my body. I started working out more, and I just really wanted to make a natural body product. So I started making products for myself. Basically after I started making products for myself, I was like, these are so great, maybe I should introduce them to other people. I did, and they love them. I was like, you know what? I think I’m going to make a business out of this, and so I did. Pg. 26 |Vendor Inter view

What are your most popular products and why do you think people love them? I would say that my number one product is our body scrub. I think it’s because that’s where Jo’s Body Shop really started initially. I thought Jo’s Body Shop was just going to be Jo’s Body Scrub. I was like perfect, I’m going to come out with Jo’s Body Scrub, and it’s going to be a one product brand. That’s just what it’s going to be. But, it obviously grew from there. That’s where we started off. Also, the product is amazing, and it’s a little bit different than most body scrubs because it doesn’t include water which is

What is one of the most important lessons you’ve learned running your own business? Work hard and never give up. There’s all kinds of obstacles that can come your way. Don’t let any one of those things deter you from doing what you really want to do. What is the thing you are most proud of when it comes to your business? The thing I’m most proud of is seeing that people like my work. It’s just seeing that I can make people smile and getting their feedback. It’s hearing what they like or don’t like which gives me the ability to work harder or do something different with my work. What is your definition of success? To me, it’s completing a work of art. I don’t necessarily have to make money from it. Just to keep doing what I love doing and finish a painting. What is one piece of advice you would give to your consumers?

KEVIN JOHNS ON

My advice is to see the value in art. Art is not just art, but it can have value financially. It can even have value spiritually if you can see yourself in the artwork. View art as something you can invest in. It’s a good investment.

INTERVIEW

What is one piece of advice you would give to entrepreneurs like yourself ?

Owner Of Kev J Art Colorado Springs, CO

Why did you start your business? Well, it really didn’t start as a business. It was just something I love to do. I joined the Army because I wanted to go to school to learn art. I had a family, so I decided to continue on in the military, but I never gave up doing my art. Once I retired from the Army after 21+ years, I knew that would be my focus again. I wanted to start reaching out to different galleries to get my art out there and in front of everybody because it’s something I always wanted to do, nd now here I am.

Pg. 28 |Vendor Inter view

What are your most popular products? Why do people love them? I do a lot of portrait style types of art with a little design work in them. My portraits do pretty well. They are my own designs. They’re not commissioned works. These are things that I create and come up with. I create works of art with males, females, younger children, or sometimes young adults. I think people love them just because of the expressions. They can see themselves in some of my artwork.

Again, just don’t give up. Don’t let obstacles deter you from what you really want to do. You don’t want to get really close to being successful and end up not finishing just because of one mishap. Interview By Angelique Scott

Everything in our candles is completely natural, plant-based and sustainable!

I started my business because as a cancer survivor, I wanted to minimize use and consumption of chemicals in my body, on my skin, and in the air I breathe. I have always loved and burned candles, so I decided to research, then make my own clean candles and skin care. My candles don’t emit chemicals, toluene, sulfates, or phthalate into the air. My skin care is made with certified organic butters and high-quality ingredients. I also wanted to use vessels that can be recycled or reused after your candle is burned.

Soy Wax | Plant-based, vegetable wax, biodegradable, sustainable and better for the planet. It produces 90% less soot than paraffin, reducing air pollution in your home and is better for our health .

One of the most important lessons I’ve learned while running by business is to be consistent, stay true to your product, time management is essential and do your research!

Cotton Wick | High grade, coreless ringspun cotton with paper filaments. Providing the cleanest, safest, most stable and consistent burn.

My most popular products are the soy candles and whipped body butter. My customers love the fragrance that is released into the air from the soy wax, as well as the long burn time. The whipped body butter is popular because of the hydration you get from the combination of butters and organic oils, and the smooth satin finish.

Why did you start your business? I wanted to be close to medicine. I saw so many people struggling in my community. One of those people was my grandmother who had been suffering headaches in her life. My grandmother had a doctor, and that doctor prescribed her pills that didn’t work. That pill gave her a side effect. She went back to that doctor, and that doctor gave her another pill. You know how the cycle goes. Before you know it, about eight pills are taken and your health is still declining. We’re not trusting to look at our own bodies, to listen to our bodies, or to break free of that western medical paradigm. From TV to school, we’re marketed to only trust certain figures. My grandmother trusted those authority figures. I started the business, so that I can start a new tradition in the family. We’re a family of herbalists. We trust the Earth first. We’re not based in heroic medicine or someone telling us what we have. We’re not based on some machine telling us what we are. We’re based on our own common sense. We’re based on how we feel. We’re based in nature. Going to nature first as a remedy is much better.

What are your most popular products? And why do you think people love them? Salted caramel and Colorado Brownie Chunk Mudslide. It all varies from area to area. The brownie mudslide and salted caramel remain the first. Then there’s the grasshopper and the White Russian. I am coming up with three new ones that I did with Breckenridge Distillery in the mountains. It’s a beer and bourbon that’s targeted for men because most of the ice cream is targeted towards women. Then I created a bourbon pecan pie for the holidays and an apple crisp cinnamon whiskey that’s coming out next week.

Why do you think people love these flavors? The taste! I kept changing the recipe until it became perfect. I use homemade brownies instead of that crap from the store. I think one of the most important lessons I’ve learned in running my business is that it’s important to meet and to talk with people in the community like; other artists, business owners, customers, and other like-minded individuals. You need to meet people. Take time and learn to be a part of the community. To actually be there and get involved and to really be a part of it. What is the thing you are most proud of when it comes to your business? Well, the goal of my art is to show the beauty and community of people of African descent and create positive images of black people that might inspire someone or just bring a moment of beauty into their day. And so from the positive responses I’m receiving, I believe I have accomplished something, and so that’s what I’m proud of the most. What is your definition of success?

I think my most popular products are my prints and my note cards, and I think people like the print because you still get the vibrant color and feel of the original without paying the price for an original. So they’re still beautiful. They’re a decent size, and their price is affordable. The feedback that I’m getting on the note cards is that people like to send some, like to use them to do things like; write a letter, or use them as thank you notes, and some like to keep them and frame them. the perfect sweet and savory combination. Customers like that my cakes are sweet, but not overly sugary. Also, when I introduced my red velvet cake with buttercream frosting, it really took off as well, I just couldn’t make enough of them! Right now, anything strawberry seems to be the craze; whether it’s the buttercream, strawberry filling between layers or a fresh strawberry topping – it’s definitely Angie’s Vegan Cakes most popular request lately. What was one of the most important lessons you learned running your own business?

A NGE L A WE LLS

That you have to be firm on what you can do. At first, I never wanted to say no to a client or their ideas, but sometimes a client’s ideas can really break a cake. It could be the type of flavors they want combined or even the size of the cake they are requesting. I’ve had people request intricate wedding-style cakes, like with multiple tiers for 100+ people and right now that is just not in my scope. I had to learn to be firm and know when to say no. Why say yes to something that you’re not going to struggle with or know it’s not going to be what they envisioned? I had to set my brand standard and let them know ‘I’m in the business to make ridiculously delicious vegan cakes.’ Now, my cakes going to be pretty and I’ll decorate the best of my ability but they’re not going to be these, fancy “Cake Boss” cakes, like really extravagant cakes that are like completely perfect. That’s not my lane, but I can guarantee that they will taste great, that everybody’s going to enjoy them, and people won’t be able to tell that they’re vegan.

INTERVIEW

Why did you start your business? I’ve been on and off vegan since 2012. This year I made a commitment to be strict vegan which can make purchasing treats very limiting. I had some vegan cakes here in Colorado, but I didn’t really them. I felt like a lot of the bakeries were more focused on mimicking the texture of traditional dairyfilled cakes than actual flavor. I decided to make my own birthday cake in February and my family loved it. I ended up sharing a few slices with some friends. One of them, who happens to be a local chef, loved it. I’m most proud of the fact that we are focused on world-wide beauty; we can sell our product in just about any country in the world. The most surprising thing for people is when they look at me they think that I only sell products for people that look like me, but I have something for everyone; from the fairest of the fair to the deepest tone of ebony, even serving those with albinism. I can also customize, but we really do have such a wide range that most of the time that isn’t necessary. What is your definition of success? My definition of success is when the world beats a path to your door. What that means to me is that people are lining up and ready to buy your product. Just appreciate where you are and take it step for step. Entrepreneurship is definitely a journey and you have to understand that it is hard and be determined to stick with the process. Know that with the celebrations there’s also lots of backtracking, apologizing, and making sure that you’re being honest and transparent. That’s the way to create a trusted brand. What is the thing you’re most proud of when it comes to your business?

The impact it has on people; that’s something I’m truly proud of. When a customer sees my products and they’re like, oh that looks like me, or this reminds me of my family member. Knowing when they see my products, they connect with it. I strive to be honest and transparent; making sure that black people feel like this is not one of those scam companies that are just trying to take your money. I really want to make a difference. I really want to be a positive representation out there. That’s what really gives me joy is to see that representation.

What is one piece of advice you would give to entrepreneurs like yourself ?

Owner Of Melanin In America Denver, CO

Why did you start your business? Initially, I started it as a hobby back in 2017. I just needed a safe space to express positive images of the black community. There’s a lot of negativity, killings and social unrest going on and always on TV. I just needed a positive outlet at that time; and then Melanin in America grew from there. What are your most popular products? One of our most popular products is the Melanin Bookworm. It’s one of our best sold pillows. It was inspired by myself because I Pg. 40 |Vendor Inter view

We also have our Wakanda inspired pillows that are popular and as well as pillows reflecting social justice and the LGBTQ community. People really love the products that they can relate to or connect with in some way. What was one important lessons you learned running your business?

One piece of advice is if you’re going to make something make sure that there is an audience for it. Make sure people want it. Don’t start a business, spend $2,000, then you realize nobody wants the product that you just produced. Have that discussion. Is there a need for this? Do you feel your product is making a difference instead of the mentality of wanting that quick money? It can’t be about the money. If you are making a difference, then the money will come after. God willing you’ll have that success. Interview By Angelique Scott

Melanin Mafia LLC is a small business owned by Vanessa Morales selling skin care, soaps, candles, incense, and more! She strives to make a business that she can pass down to her family, and that will inspire others to follow their dreams as well. What are some of your most popular products and why do people love them? I started a new line of fall candles that I sold at a recent event, and people really love them. They fill up the room with their flavorful aroma. I’ve also had great reviews on my shea butter soaps. My husband loves using them, and I also sent them to some family and friends back home who really enjoyed them. They told me that in the shower their skin didn’t feel dried or irritated, but they felt moisturized. I make my soaps from ingredients that are good for all skin types. What is one of the most important lessons that you learned while running your own business? It would definitely be to trust my instincts. I noticed that sometimes making a product for other people could be nerve wracking whenever I thought about the feedback I was going to get. 1I struggled with that for a while. So I wonder are people going to like these like I would? People are like, Oh my God, these are so cute. When I got to the pop-up shop, they sold out. JA YA NA CR OWL E Y

INTERVIEW

Owner Of Shady By Jay Denver, CO

Why did you start your business? A friend of mine and I talked about a business idea and we never really got to take off with it. When I attended the Black Boss Summitt it really inspired me. I had already been thinking about creating something of my own and doing something of my own so that really kind of lit a fire under me and gave me a foundation and a starting point. Then about a year later is when I launched Shady. It gave me ammunition. I’ve always wanted to create something for myself and for my family. I have little shades by Jax that are really for my son. I want him to get older Pg. 44 |Vendor Inter view

and run the business himself. I definitely thought about my family a lot, creating something and trying to get generational wealth. That’s really important to me as well. What are your most popular products and why do people love them? I have a couple different styles and I’m always getting new different styles. I have some frames called Blue Tint. They’re a blue tinted color, people really like them and they’re just super cute. I also come up with a lot of clever descriptions on my website. I always try to find a fun way to sell the sunglasses. I want

I would say the power of customer service. I had my first issue with a customer. I literally treat every single customer special, and I want to see my product through every time. Each time I send it off, I’m constantly looking at the tracking. I had noticed that her shades were delivered. I always send a message, like hey, I see you got your Shades, I hope you love them and to follow me on social media. She was like hey, I saw the email and I haven’t had a chance to check my mail yet. I’ll let you know if I get them. About two days go -by and she told me that she hadn’t got them. So I’m panicking. I’m like, oh my God, what do I do? I’ve never had to deal with this before. So ask her to check her mailbox and to let me know if they don’t come by tomorrow. We’ll just take it from there. She was like, okay and then let me know that she still didn’t get them. I told her I was just going to ship her out another pair. She was also interested in another pair that I had. So she was like, well, let’s get those. So I said okay, we’ll just replace that pair for you. So I did that and she actually ended up getting them. She thought her neighbor took them because they were left on her porch and they were open. I needed to know how to handle that situation. She ended up giving me a really awesome shoutout, saying my customer service was amazing! People who were following her, started following me. Just getting some followers from that and seeing the power of customer service. It goes a long way with people.

with it. Keep that as your Northern Star, and don’t let the opinions of others change what you’re trying to accomplish. What are you most proud of when it comes to your business? I think the biggest thing that I’m proud of is the notes that I get from customers and potential customers. Some people may have heard of me from an interview, on a podcast, or they’ve tried a sample of our products. I have gotten a lot of encouragement particularly from the black travel community about the products that we provide. They are glad to finally see something like this, made for them, on the market. There’s tons of products out there, and people trying to make money, but I think it’s really powerful when you actually fulfill the needs of the people, and strive to improve their lives in some way. What is your definition of success?

O R I ON B R OWN

My definition of success is a little bit fluid in the sense that I never know exactly how the path is going to lead me. You can plan for outcomes as much as you want, but if you get too hung up on wanting things a specific way, you may be disappointed just because it wasn’t exactly what you imagined. I try not to hinge success on a specific outcome, and I focus on growing, learning and increasing the value of my business.

What is one piece of advice that you would like to give to other entrepreneurs like yourself ?

Owner Of Black Travel Box Denver, CO

Black Travel Box is a company founded by Orion Brown, made for the Black Traveler. Black Travel Box gives women of color a brand they can trust for all their personal travel needs.

It feels great on the skin, and can last a long time. The Lip Balm is made with natural ingredients, so people really notice a big difference when they go from using brands like Chapstick to using our products.

What are some of your most popular products and why do people love them?

What is one of the most important lessons that you’ve learned while running your own business?

Right now, our selection of products is still pretty small. Our top product right now is our Basic Bundle, but some of our most popular products include our Body Balm and our Lip Balm. People love that they are so usable, and the Body Balm smells great. Pg. 46 |Vendor Inter view

One of the most important lessons that I’ve learned is that many people will have opinions and will want to give you advice, but ultimately, only you know the vision of your company and where you want to go

Come to the realization that small failures and big failures are okay. Roll with it. Failure is one of the best ways to learn how to grow. Understand that failure isn’t the worst thing. Experiencing it and surviving it helps to teach you, so get it out of the way early. Written by Talisa Caldwell `

with sage), and they love their unique look and style. What is one of the most important lessons that you learned while running your own business? One of the most important lessons I learned is that you are going to make mistakes, and that is okay. As long as you learn from your mistakes and continue to grow, nothing can stop you, but your own mind. I have recently started selling my products wholesale in different stores, and that is a whole new learning experience. Luckily, the stores I have been working with have been kind and patient with me. I know that I am making these mistakes now, so that in the future, I will know exactly what I need to do to give the consumer the best experience with my products! What is the thing that you’re most proud of when it comes to your business?

TA LISA CA LD WE LL

I love making people feel good, and I love knowing that all of my products are healthy and sustainably sourced. I think that some companies don’t care if they use healthy ingredients, or where their ingredients and materials come from. I take a lot of time to decide where my materials come from, and I think it makes a huge difference. I started making my products because I wanted people to have a healthier alternative to the products you find on the shelves.

Freedom Creators Co is a small business run by Talisa Caldwell that sells skin care, crystal jewelry, teas and more! Talisa’s goal is to make people feel good about the products they buy, and inspired to be themselves! When did you first start your business? I first started my business back in 2018. People love how soft it makes their skin feel. People also love my crystal bracelets because each bracelet is unique. I never make the same jewelry piece twice. People love the energy of the bracelets, (I cleanse each one

What is one piece of advice that you would give to entrepreneurs like yourself ? Do not compromise who you are because the world needs you to Be You. The more you can be yourself, the more you can inspire others to be themselves too. We don’t need more fakeness, or people thinking that they are not worthy because of society’s standards. Be yourself, and don’t let your business overtake that. Remember what truly matters in this life is who we are, and living our lives full of love.

What was one of the most important lessons you learned running your business? I think the most important lesson I learned was to not undervalue my work. I think it’s really easy to undersell yourself. The big lesson learned was actually know what you’re worth. Know what your time is worth and what your product is worth. If you charge what you’re worth, people will pay, and I had to really get used to that. People will respect your work and products if you do. What is the thing that you are most proud of when it comes to your business? I am most proud of the fact that my business reflects who I am. I truly love the pieces that I create. I get to help other people feel great about what they’re wearing. Each jewelry item comes with a handwritten affirmation card, so in the process of getting my earrings, you will also get all this love and support to go with it. I’m just really proud that I can find a way to encourage people’s hearts and minds. I’m also really proud to be a black, woman owned business here in Colorado. A SHLE Y COR NE L I U S

INTERVIEW

Owner Of Big Bang Jewelry Colorado Springs, CO

I started my business because I love jewelry, and I love earrings. I wanted people to feel beautiful, strong, and powerful. I thought jewelry was the best way to do that. I wanted to have unique pieces that other people wouldn’t have, to increase people’s confidence, and have them feeling good when they put on an outfit. What are your most popular products? in Colorado Springs. It’s a great way to show your support through accessories, which has been really fantastic. All my earrings have a tagline with them. I have spoon and fork earrings that are very popular.. That one is really about stating that you are the whole meal and encourages the fact that you are not a snack, but so much more. All my earrings have a little bit of a story with them, and I love that. It’s so unique that I’m turning things that wouldn’t necessarily be earrings into jewelry.

One piece of advice that I would say is do what you love. Whatever it is that you are passionate about, move forward with that tenfold. Even if there’s a bunch of different companies out there doing what you do. It’s going to be special because you’re creating it. I want my consumers to know that this business is so much about making people feel confident, valued, and important. I found that way through jewelry and that has boosted my confidence. It’s a conversation starter when you have unique earrings. With my jewelry business it’s about affirming what’s already there. As well as, reinforcing how fantastic you are and all the ways that you are unique and powerful in this world. Interview By Angelique Scott

Owner Of Freedom Scents Denver, CO

Before an ounce of wax was ever poured to create a candle, the vision of Freedom Scents LLC. was nothing but an idea of our founder Martina Seaborn, a Mobile, Alabama native, to create a product that gave her comfort during difficult and trying times in her life. During the process of healing from a divorce, candles gave her a source of peace and serenity. Her purpose of creating candles gave her the ability to relax and recenter herself, in addition to meditation and prayer. Back in 2018, Martina began taking up the hobby of candle making just to have a variety of candle scents to burn for herself in the comfort of her own home. She then began to play around with the idea of creating a candle line that would provide the same feeling of comfort, peace, and relaxation to others; women and men in their own element. It wasn’t until January 2019, that Martina decided to share her journey of scent mixture and candle making for a purpose greater than her own enjoyment. She began making candles for her family and friends just so she could receive honest feedback, but her ultimate goal and desire was to create a line of candles that people could relate to. As Martina begins this journey as a young black entrepreneur, she hopes to be an example not only for her community, but other young black women who also desire to start their own business and to create a legacy of generational wealth. What is the thing you are most proud of when it comes to your business? Proud of the outcome and like the aftermath. I like seeing customers happy. They enjoy the cookies. I look to see what kind of cookies are on pinterest…I look for decorating ideas and this helps me as I try to make my customers happy. I can be current and still my own artistic style is used. I know I am doing the right thing. It is the best part of my cookies, and I know someone appreciates what I do. What are your most popular cookies and why do people love them?

HA DA S S A H PE A R L NI X

It is hard to say because I do custom cookies. It is about the senses, feeling, smelling, tasting, hearing, and seeing. Smelling the sweet sugar cookie, feeling a sense of accomplishment, tasting the flaky tasting sweetness, hearing the nice crunch and seeing the beautiful artistic work that has been completed. Customers love my Valentine’s Day and Christmas cookies. People love the holidays. The next ones are birthdays, Minnie mouse and Disney themes to be specific.

What is your definition of success?

Owner Of Dassah Good Cookie! Colorado Springs, CO

Why did you start your business? I was 17, when I started my business. I needed a job and a way to make my own money and to stop asking my parents. I did not really know what job would fit me. I am super artistic, a videographer, and an entrepreneur. I learned how to do cookies through a family friend. I thought I should try it out, and it worked very well. I wanted to make money for films that I create, and it ended up working well.

What is one of the most important lessons you have learned while running your own business? Timing...Timing is super important for any job, but for a business, it’s especially important. I was in high school and having my own film club, so time was important. I had to learn how to have better time management because I would get home right after school. I started out by baking for hours, planning out how long for the different parts, ordering cookie cutters, and figuring out how long the mail takes. Time management is a big part of the lesson I learned. Taking

Being happy while doing something that you love. Loving what I do and making people happy. Success is beautiful designs that come from my passion and love for art. What is one piece of advice you would give to entrepreneurs like yourself ? Try something new. You’ll never know unless you try. It is okay to fail, try not to be so hard on yourself. I am still learning what works and what does not. Be okay with failing, move on, and learn from it. Interview By Shirley Martinez

I started my safety key chain business for several reasons. One reason is I always wanted to start my own business. When I was younger, I enjoyed various projects like making gifts and bracelets for my family, but it wasn’t until my mom and I were searching online, and we happened to see examples of other kids starting their own business. This inspired me to do the same, and with my mom’s help, we talked about the idea of the safety chains. The safety items on the key chain include a mini flashlight and an emergency whistle to name a few items. Because we’re currently in a pandemic, I knew sanitizer would be another popular item to add. There are also other items that most people would say are essential to their purse or backpack like lip balm and the actual key chain. My safety chains are a great mixture of style and essential items. I pictured kids carrying it on their backpack, and adults carrying it on their keychain or purse. Each object is easy

to access. I wanted something that would be helpful in the life of others and bring them peace in a time where there’s so much going on in the world. Some of the popular products are the hand sanitizer, lip balm, and pepper spray. Hand sanitizer is a must nowadays. Everyone knows, with COVID around, keeping our hands clean is one way to prevent the spread of viruses and bacteria. Instead of carrying a huge bottle of sanitizer everywhere you go, this is more convenient. The lip balm is really popular, too! Winter is around the corner which means the air is dry especially in our state of Colorado. With the high altitude, it’s important to keep your lips moisturized. Pepper spray is popular because of the added safety and security it can give.

At one time I was losing money because customers would contact me about a wreath I would purchases the materials which was more than $20 and the customer would want to only pay $20, we would discuss the price, so expectations should be very clear. I am a water operations controller at Colorado Springs Utilities. I have worked here for seven years. I operate our water distribution, raw water, non-potable and wastewater systems through our Supervisory Control And Data Acquisition system— otherwise known as SCADA. This is a computer system that monitors and controls our equipment and technology in the field. Part of my responsibilities include forecasting day to day water usage and keeping the water system operating efficiently to deliver water safely and reliably. Diversity of thought is valuable to Colorado Springs Utilities because it allows our company to be innovative and forwardthinking. Since we are such a diverse company it allows different perspectives on ideas and unique insight into problems. Springs Utilities is an inclusive employer because we value all individuals, which is a key aspect to how we are all connected. My favorite part about working at Colorado Springs Utilities is knowing how vital our impact is to this community, and how hard we all work to bring our customers the best services. Workforce Development Specialist I was first hired as a Utility Worker 1 in 2009 for Wastewater Collections. Within a year I was promoted into the Wastewater Collections apprenticeship program where I became a Master Journeyman. In 2016 I was promoted to my current role with the University of Springs Utilities as a Workforce Development Specialist. I help make sure our employees are properly trained and able to perform the tasks necessary to keep the city running. The training we provided is not only mandatory, but it’s necessary to bring mothers and fathers home safely to their families. Colorado Springs Utilities has given me an opportunity to better myself and grow into a career field I can be proud of. I was a construction worker who worked his way up from the bottom. The leadership in this company embraced, encouraged and challenged me to be more. My favorite part about working here is the people. I love to get out and network and meet new people. Colorado Springs Utilities has made me feel important and valued. Diversity of thought is not only valuable to Colorado Springs Utilities, but to every organization in the country. Without diversity of thought and experience we shackle ourselves to a Univision workforce unable to progress and compete in a society becoming more diverse every second. Although Springs Utilities is not at the finish line, our veterans’ programs, disabilities programs, diversity programs and our work in the community shows we are on the right track.

Environmental Specialist

For the last 17 years, I have been working as an Environmental Specialist in the Environmental Services Division at Colorado Springs Utilities. My responsibilities include environmental compliance audits of our facilities, operations and off-site waste disposal sites, management of hazardous materials and wastes, training on environmental regulations, performing environmental assessments of real property transactions, and providing technical guidance on projects to ensure compliance with environmental regulations in support of our environmental stewardship initiatives. When diversity of thought is absent, the tunnel vision of like-mindedness becomes perilous to innovation and creativity. Our best is demonstrated when we embrace and harness the ideas, viewpoints and perspectives of people from various ages, experiences, and backgrounds as an essential component of the way we must do business to stay relevant not only today, but also as we prepare for the future. Diversity of thought is also a strategy for which Springs Utilities positions itself in the community as an inclusive employer by attracting, developing and retaining a skilled and diverse workforce that is representative of the community we serve. My ongoing efforts to help Colorado Springs Utilities be more relevant in the larger community include participation on the Harrison School District Two’s Bond Construction Oversight Committee to provide input on construction capital projects; serving as a Peak Education mentor to high school seniors to assist them through successful navigation of the college funding process; and contributing as a Very Involved Parent on Positive Behavior Interventions and Supports (PBIS) initiatives at Harrison High School.

North District Energy Supply Maintenance Superintendent As a 15-year employee of Colorado Springs Utilities, currently I’m the North District Energy Supply Maintenance Superintendent. My responsibilities include oversight of maintenance activities, budgeting and the continuous improvement of plant maintenance practices for all North District Energy Supply Assets. The Energy Supply Maintenance Department is comprised of individuals from very diverse backgrounds and experiences. This diversity leads to creative problem-solving, resulting in improved work processes and procedures. Throughout my career, I have attempted to maintain a focus on team cohesion. This stems from the belief that a strong team gives all members a voice and differences of opinion do not discourage outside-the-box thinking. My personal experience is an example of how Springs Utilities is an inclusive employer. Entering the workforce after college, I quickly began to question my career path. I missed working with my hands and the satisfaction it brought. After several years of trying to find my way in the office environment, I decided to seek out career alternatives. Through employment research and a few chance meetings with Springs Utilities employees, I was convinced Springs Utilities was the organization I wanted to be part of. They spoke of an environment that was open to internal mobility. Having no power generation experience at the time, fifteen years ago I was offered an entry-level position within the Energy Supply Department. Through the strength of the apprenticeship programs and a personal commitment to continuous improvement, I’m now in a position where I’m able to provide similar opportunities for others.
