Energy Efficiency and the Building Occupants behaviour The impact of a building’s thermal performance, that is the building design and construction materials used, on space heating and cooling demand has been well studied. However, building thermal performance is all about attaining thermal comfort and studies have shown that the way in which occupants evaluate their indoor thermal environment is personal and varies with time. There is however, little work done that incorporates the impact of the occupants behaviour on thermal comfort levels. However, data shows that the energy use of different occupants living in identical residential units can vary by as much as 200-300% The use of winter heating and summer air conditioning should not be the first action taken by an occupant. More energy efficient is the use of other variables, such as • •
opening and closing of windows, curtaining and blinds, plus use of internal doors or openings to allow for the inclusion or exclusion of heat and cool to various portions of the home.
In summer, closing the windows, blinds and curtains is imperative once the morning temperature begins to rise. A results study indicated that the temperature of a residence occupied by an active window user in summer is up to 2.6 °C lower than that for the passive window user. The use of external blinds and vegetation is also beneficial. When the evening temperature drops, opening a single window on the lee side of the house will have minimal effect on cooling, whereas, opening windows on opposite sides of the house where natural flow through ventilation is optimised will have a far greater effect on cooling and additionally exhausting air house with a fan on the lee side will draw additional air through the house and multiply the effect. Of cause, the external temperature must be lower than the internal for this to be effective. Occupants during the Canberra winter are less likely to take active measures to modify their thermal comfort outside the use of active heating. The heating, being thermostatically controlled, is likely to be left to run for the majority of time. Sure thermal comfort is achieved but at what cost? Opening north and west facing blinds and curtains during the middle of our sunny winter days allows radiant heat into the house and this effect can be multiplied with the use of thermal mass inside these windows. Drawing the curtains as soon as the sun looses intensity will prevent heat loss. Effective seals on all external doors and windows and internal doors to unconditioned areas of the house that are not heated also prevent heat loss. A simple test of running a hand across the edges of these items will indicate where seals are ineffective. A study in the Netherlands showed that whilst building characteristics still determine a large part of the energy use in a dwelling (42%) the occupants characteristics and behaviour also significantly affect energy use (4.2%), As a consequence of the improved quality of thermal properties of buildings due to energy regulations, overall energy use associated with building characteristics is decreasing, making the role of the occupant more important.
