WHAT’S INSIDE
Welcome to Summer in Canterbury 2022 It’s good to be back! After a really strange couple of years, we are looking forward to a summer jam packed with events and festivities. The Queen’s Platinum Jubilee in June marks seventy years of HM’s hard work and dedication to the job. Seventy years is a serious amount of time in any family business – which got us thinking. There are longstanding, familyrun businesses in this city, some of which have been around even longer than Her Majesty! Inside, we meet some of the people behind our local businesses and celebrate their success and years of service. Whether you live, work, study or visit here, there’s so much to celebrate and enjoy in Canterbury this Summer.

Canterbury’s Longstanding Businesses
Enduring, longstanding businesses in the city
The Queen’s 70th year of service reminds us how great it is to be able to celebrate true longevity. We always love to welcome new businesses to the city - but did you realise that there are shops in Canterbury which have been in business even longer than Her Majesty? Cousins Jewellers in Sun Street opened in the 1920s. Canterbury Pottery in Buttermarket has been in business for almost 60 years! Saracen’s Lantern Antiques in The Borough has been here over 50 years.
6
So what helps a business to endure for so long in these challenging times ? We chatted with some to find out a bit more about their stories – some of which you can read about in this guide. Keep an eye on MyCanterbury for more.
WE ARE
OPEN
T & B Cousins and Sons Ltd. Jewellery and Silverware in Sun Street is a family business, still trading from its original site after a HUNDRED years. Owner Nigel Cousins shares their incredible Canterbury story… Our premises in Sun Street, under the sign of the Sun Hotel, was my great-grandfather’s shop, and run by our grandmother after WW2. She has just retired after over 70 years working here. We are now in our fourth-generation trading from the same shop, of 100 years standing. This is little compared to the age of the timber-framed shop itself, with its jettied elevations and which dates from the middle of the 13th century. The building retains the old beams, which add such character to the showroom. The Cousins family have always lived in the Canterbury area, and several family weddings have taken place in the crypt of the cathedral. My grandfather first came to Canterbury as a soldier in 1939, when his regiment attended a service in the cathedral before embarking for France with the British Expeditionary Force. He and his brother from London decided that they would settle in Canterbury if they survived the war. In contrast, I have just recently joined the family team after working in high value antiques in London.
We are favoured with an amazing clientbase, living in Kent and from all over the world; Canterbury is a time-honoured place of pilgrimage and settlement. Our contribution for a Canterbury time capsule would be a medallion that my uncle designed, which features the white Invicta horse representing the county of Kent.

Saracen’s Lantern Bill Christophers has owned antique shop Saracen’s Lantern for over 50 years, on the same site in The Borough. Bill was always fascinated by old buildings and old things. Explains Bill: My father took me to an auction when I was 7 and I bought my first item: a stuffed dog in a case. I was instantly bitten by the antique bug. I haunted the local antique shop at weekends and holidays… the owner must have been very patient.
Best sellers at Saracen’s Lantern? Even in the antique trade things go in and out of fashion, but my best sellers at the moment are lithographic prints, with perhaps old plates also increasing in popularity.
I went to Christ Church College (as it was then) and trained as a maths teacher. After teaching for a short while I worked nights for 3 years at Kingsmans factory bakery in the Sturry Road, saving money towards buying my own antique shop.
What would you put into a time capsule to showcase your shop? I would put the iron lamp bracket I bought when the 16th century Saracen's Head pub (which was in Burgate) was demolished for the ring road. It was why I called my shop Saracen's Lantern, but I never got round to putting the lamp on the front of the shop!
Canterbury's proximity to London and the South East has always provided a sound customer base, and it attracts a great variety of people from all parts of the world, both antique collectors and others who just want a unique memento of their visit. Many well-known people have been in here, including Archbishop Desmond Tutu, some of the cast of Neighbours - even Paula Yates used to buy second-hand children’s book for her daughters.
The message to people who have yet (after 52 years) to visit my shop is there are always interesting items in the windows, even if old things are not your cup of tea. Who knows? They might bring you a love of antiques!
I people-watch from my shop, the variety of people who come in or pass by are forever fascinating and I enjoy chatting. Those who have gone past my door include President Mitterrand and Mrs Thatcher on the way to signing the Channel Tunnel agreement; the Pope on his visit; Prince Charles and Princess Diana and most recently the Olympic Torch bearer. I would love someone to walk through the door who wants to continue the business. I am now well past retirement age, which is why for most of the year I only open on Saturdays.

Lenleys is synonymous with home style in Canterbury. Now 86 years old, it continues to provide high quality furnishings, floorings and homeware to city residents, and across the county. Kent school friends Leonard Watts and Stanley Adsett founded it but couldn’t agree on a name for their furniture shop – so it became Lenleys - a mixture of their two names. Partner Lavinia Watts told us more…. We first opened in February 1936 in Burgate, and eventually expanded to occupy five stores in the city. Originally my grandfather and his school friend Stan were planning to open in Maidstone as this is where they grew up, however Clarkes Furnishers opened first and so they decided on a move to Canterbury. In 1983 the business relocated to our current site on Roper Road to bring all departments under one roof. In the same year a fire on the premises meant a complete rebuild was necessary which allowed for a purpose-built store to be built and which we are still in today. I grew up in Canterbury and went to St Edmunds School before studying Fashion Buying at Manchester University. After graduating I worked for a high end fashion designer and later in London for a large highstreet chain. I moved back to Canterbury in 2015 and joined Lenleys. I spent time working in every department to learn the business before becoming partner in 2017. There are many great aspects of having a business based in Canterbury but one of the main things is the sense of community and pride in the city.
86 years
What would Lenleys put into a Canterbury time capsule? A little off-piste here as it’s not a product but it would be our crest. This gives a subtle nod to what we do and our heritage. What message would you like to send out to shoppers who’ve not visited your business yet? Lenleys is a family-run furniture showroom in Canterbury offering a wide range of quality products from some of the world’s leading designers and craftsmen. Whatever you are looking for your home you are sure to be inspired by a visit to the store. Our expert advisors are on hand to advise you of the best options for your home.

Canterbury Pottery Another longstanding local business (60 years next year) is the ever-popular Canterbury Pottery, opposite the Cathedral Gate in Buttermarket, owned by Jan and Richard Chapman. Jan tells us a little more of their story, and explains why customers keep coming back… Canterbury Pottery was opened in this exact same address on 16th June 1963 by Richard’s late mother Betty Chapman. She had trained at the Royal College of Art.
10
Richard started very young helping his mother in the pottery. He and his two brothers went to The King’s School, opposite the shop, and Richard was able to pop in to make pots in any free time he had (when he should probably have been at games!) He was also a bit of a menace in the school pottery. We met when I commissioned Richard to make my parents a set of oven dishes. I was 18 and had just started working at my family business with my two brothers at Cousins Jewellers. We were married in the cathedral three years later. In 2000 Richard asked me to come and help him out for a bit because ‘he was short staffed’ and I've been there ever since! The best thing about having business in Canterbury is the sense of community within the city's businesses. Canterbury is a small city, so it is friendly and safe. There’s a constant flow of people coming in and out which makes it vibrant and interesting. You never know who you’re going to see next.
59rs yea Who would you most have loved to see walk through the door and why? Lucie Rie, a wonderful potter who made exquisite pots. She made pots right into her old age and died at the age of 96. She would have some wonderful tales to tell. Which one item from your shop would you put in a time capsule to showcase the shop? We would select one of our Chalice & Patens with the Canterbury Cross on it. We have been making these for nearly 60 years and they are used all around the world in different churches, abbeys, cathedrals and religious communities for holy communion. We think that is rather a wonderful legacy. What’s your current best seller? At the moment the most popular sellers are the Bread Bins, as people really got into baking during the lockdowns. These are real statement pieces for a kitchen. What message would you like to send out to shoppers who’ve not visited your business yet? Come and visit! The shop is full of beautiful handmade pots which are practical to use and reasonably priced. We write Canterbury Pottery on the base of every piece, so they make a wonderful memento of a visit to Canterbury. It’s quite rare now to find a working pottery right in the heart of a thriving city. Come and see the pots being made and treat yourself!

Talking of longstanding, cherished businesses, we must of course mention Café des Amis – a little bit of Mexican sunshine in our city. While food fashions come and go, this little restaurant on the corner by the river continues to be packed every night and has been feeding Canterbury for 34 years now. Owners Bill and Emmanuelle Betham split their time between Canterbury and Hawaii (tough, right?) but their hearts lie here. Emmanuelle told us how it all started… Bill grew up in Canterbury. went to St Edmund's School, and we met in Paris in 1985. After travelling in Mexico in 1987, we found inspiration for our new business. After a basic refit helped by family and friends, Café des Amis opened in April 1988. The first week went well enough, with a gentle stream of curious customers coming to find out what this new place was about serving Mexican food in a restaurant with a French name. The second weekend, things went crazy. The restaurant filled up quickly and the kitchen went into meltdown. Customers walked out having waited forever for food to arrive. At this stage, we were doing everything ourselves and realised we were going to need some help pronto.
What would we put in the Canterbury time capsule? We would choose to put one of our cast aluminium fajita wheels inside; we had them made by a foundry in Faversham 30 years ago. What would we say to customers who have not yet visited us? ARE there people who have not been to Cafe des Amis?
Café des Amis 2 Westgate Grove, CT2 8AA. 01227 464390. ➜ cafedez.com
It was also apparent that it was not going to work for long cooking on a domestic cooker without extraction. So after an expensive kitchen refit and taking on some staff, Café des Amis started to find its feet. However, a couple of months after opening, the restaurant closed for a week for the birth of our first baby. Not exactly the best timing! In 1995, Café des Amis expanded by taking over the Momtaz Indian restaurant next door, which almost doubled the capacity. Over the years, Café des Amis has become the favourite of students, residents, tourists and more than a few celebrities (including Prince Edward). We are mostly pleased that so many wonderful customers appreciate the restaurant we created, that they enjoy our food, and come back so regularly. Our dream guest would be Sir David Attenborough. We’d happily treat him to a free meal in exchange for all the great work he has done.

Cosmo China Cosmo China celebrates 30 years in the city this year. As well as regular stock, customers can commission bespoke painted designs from a number of artists, and each piece is a true one-off. The Firmin Family are the creative geniuses behind the shop on the city’s King’s Mile – we stopped by to learn more. Charlotte explains We opened at 26 Palace Street in Canterbury in 1992. So long ago that we can't really be absolutely sure of the date! We've been hand-painting bone china here ever since. We come from Canterbury and went to school here. Our Dad was Peter Firmin, who created TV favourites Bagpuss and The Clangers. Four of us six daughters are involved with Cosmo China. Josie owns the business and runs the shop in Cosmo Place, London. Charlotte works and paints in the Canterbury shop and does the commissions here. Emily and Katy paint their designs here for both shops. For us, the best thing about having a business in Canterbury is the mix of customers. The faithful locals and the tourists discovering us for the first time. We now have customers from all corners of the world, thanks to the internet, 30 years after we opened. Palace Street, The Borough and Northgate are fascinating multi-cultural areas now compared with when we first opened. There are Turkish and North African barbers, Eastern European food shops, an independent coffee shop, micro pub, jewellers, Japanese hairdressers and every sort of restaurant. There are plenty of places on the King's Mile with pavement seating where you can watch the world go by.
Who would you most love to see walk through the door? Rowan Williams. We sold a lot of Rowan mugs when he was Archbishop of Canterbury and we know he was given one himself, but he never visited in person. We've had plenty of famous customers though! Which one piece from your shop would you put in a time capsule to showcase what you do? When Charles and Camilla's wedding was postponed in 2005 the original date was crossed out and the new one added. We got so much publicity in the press and on TV that there was a queue outside the shop! The mug featured as “an antique of the future” in Miller's Antique guide that year. What’s your current best seller? Josie has been hand painting her Cat design mugs since 1984 and they are still a great favourite. What message would you send out to shoppers who’ve not visited your business yet? If you are looking for beautiful bone china in designs for every taste or you want to commission a unique piece for a special occasion - explore Canterbury and head for Cosmo China.

Canterbury-raised David Lilford (and family) own Lilford Gallery on Palace St, opened in June 2000. It’s an independent gallery with an eclectic range of exciting and thought-provoking artwork.
2ye2ars David’s original background is in retail management but Art was always his hobby. He told us... I loved collecting and visiting galleries from an early age. I am originally from Canterbury and went to school here (St Thomas’s and then St Anselms). I chose Canterbury for my business because this is my home and the city I love. Canterbury punches above its weight; it’s quite small compared to other cities and our visitors come from all over the world. It is (normally and pandemic aside) a great place to do business! What people might not know about us is the breadth of art that we show in the galleries; from local artists through to the world famous. We often have works by the likes of Banksy, Sir Antony Gormley, Tracey Emin, Damien Hirst and many more. It can be a surprise sometimes for people to see this quality of work in Canterbury. I love it when people come in who have a passion for art and are interested in the stories about the works or the artists. My best seller is an artist called Jonathan Stewardson. A great painter of light and a really nice human.
For my contribution to a Canterbury time capsule, I would put in a little tapestry I have on display by Grayson Perry. A wonderful artist and one of the best cultural commentators and observers. My message to those who have not yet visited is – Come and seek us out! There are many small family-run businesses in the city like mine. Canterbury is a small place, none of us are far from the city centre.

Canterbury is Blooming
Who keeps Canterbury Blooming? Canterbury’s summer hanging baskets, dotted throughout the city, are always a colourful highlight of the season. They are hung on business frontages in the city centre from May and bloom right the way through until October. They’re paid for by the city centre businesses (via the Canterbury Business Improvement District, or BID) to ensure the city is colourful and pretty, and to welcome visitors, shoppers and locals to its centre. They’re included as part of a wider initiative – Canterbury in Bloom – a regional competition for civic pride in our towns and cities. Canterbury has won GOLD for its entry in the ‘RHS South and South East in Bloom’ for the last 9 years and brings together community groups, residents associations, volunteers, businesses, city and county councils, and individuals who want to join in and make a difference. It’s no longer just about hanging baskets or planters, but about the city’s commitment to green spaces, biodiversity, wildlife and the environment, and about bringing people together to take pride in where they live. Canterbury now has its own Biodiversity Network, Climate Action Partnership (CCAP), and a new Academy for for Sustainable Futures at Canterbury Christ Church University.
So, in Summer 2022, look out for some of the city’s prettiest small public gardens, including St Mary de Castro (at the end of Castle St), Solly’s Orchard (between the back of The Marlowe Theatre and The Miller’s Arms Pub), The Butterfly Garden (Pound Lane), The Three Cities Garden (behind Patisserie Valerie in High St) and Millers Field (between Pound Lane and Westgate car park). These have all had volunteer time for planning, digging, planting, weeding, watering and maintaining, and they bring extra splashes of colour and other green benefits to Canterbury. Volunteers also contribute a huge amount in some of our larger public parks such as The Westgate Gardens and Dane John Gardens.

Canterbury is Blooming
The Friends of Dane John Garden tell us that in 2021, “Nine volunteers planted about 600 bulbs in the main border. The bulbs were chosen to enhance the appearance of the border but also were selected with pollinators in mind. The 400 species Crocus flowered in early March and could be heard as well as seen as they were visited by bees. The Daffodils selected were a mixture of native British Daffodils and early flowering ones with the aim of cheering people up as early as possible after the winter. Alliums were also planted because they are popular with people and insects. Volunteers spent an average of about 50 -60 hours each in the park each season. They have worked on clearing rubbish from the border, weeding, planting and watering. One 87 year old has been known to start at 9am and finish at 6pm. It has been positive that residents new to the area have been introduced to each other this way, and one person had never done any gardening before becoming a volunteer. Passers-by frequently talk with us when passing through the parks.”
Sian Pettman, from the Friends of Kingsmead Field, said: “The great thing about being an active member of a Friends group is that it enables you to meet other residents who really care about their local green space and want to work together to improve and enjoy it.” In addition to its gardeners, Canterbury has a small army of river volunteers helping to clear and protect Canterbury’s River Stour at several places. This brave, hardy bunch go into the Stour to dredge, clean and eliminate the rubbish and overgrowth. They also make regular checks to record the variety of pond life, water health and ensure that the eco-systems are healthy. You could even volunteer to play an important role in improving your local river, by becoming a volunteer River Warden, with your own stretch of river to look after through the Kentish Stour Countryside Partnership.
Residents’ Associations, Canterbury Christ Church University, St Martin’s Hospital, Friends of Kingsmead Fields, Friends of Vauxhall Fields, Friends of Westgate Parks, Kentish Stour Partnership, Canterbury Cathedral, Eastbridge Hospital, The King’s School, Abbot’s Mill Project, CCAP, The Canterbury Society, The Kent Union, Whitefriars, English Heritage, Catching Lives, The Kent Downs Organisation, University of Kent, Canterbury City Council, Kent County Council – and so many local group and individual heroes who volunteer, just for the joy of it. Canterbury in Bloom results will be announced in July 2022.
Volunteer litter-pickers make a big contribution too! Former Lord Mayor Terry Westgate and local organiser and Deputy Chair of The Canterbury Society, Beverly Paton, have regularly marshalled volunteers to litter-pick and clean up areas in the city such as along the River Stour and hotspots for dumping such as carparks and alleys. They have also scrubbed graffiti from vandalised areas. It makes a huge difference to these public places, and discourages people from further dumping rubbish, or discarding fast food wrappers. There are several local groups who together to litter pick, chat and walk, whilst providing a great community service. Check out The Friends of Westgate Parks Facebook page for some great photos.

The Canterbury food bank 38
There are now over 2,200 Food Banks in the UK. They provide a food lifeline for families and individuals experiencing food insecurity. The Covid pandemic has had a significant effect on the numbers seeking help.
It works with those in the Canterbury district (that’s north to Whitstable and Herne Bay, and as far south as the Canterbury villages of Barham and Petham) who are in need of help during times of crisis. The current rise in the cost of living, as well as the ongoing complications from the pandemic has left many people and families with a difficult financial juggle. For some, this has meant that food bank deliveries have become even more essential, as they struggle to pay for rent and utilities. The Food Bank provides 3-day food parcels to individuals and families, usually via referral from local bodies such as schools, job centres, charities and clubs.
Angela Gardiner from CFB explains… CFB often provides around 3,000 meals every week. Our most useful items include tinned (long shelf life) items such as baked beans, soup, tomatoes, vegetables, meat, fish, potatoes, pasta sauce, jam, fruit and dessert, fruit juice, cereal, long-life milk, biscuits, tea and coffee and cup-a-soups. We also make up parcels for specific dietary needs and available cooking facilities. Some of our customers may only have access to a microwave or kettle and may have limited cold storage.
We also need practical things such as small washing powders, deodorants and shampoo. Take laundry detergent for example - can you imagine sending your child to school with yesterday’s lunch on their jumper because you haven't been able to wash it? It's a like a big red flag over them that says 'my parents are struggling'. Large nappies are always in demand, size 5, 5+, 6, 6+ - we never have enough! Lots of shops in the Canterbury district have offered to host a collection point for us, which is fantastic. In fact M&S Foodhall off Sturry Rd is the first M&S in the country to host a food bank collection point! The best thing donors can do is to check what we need before they buy. Every Friday we post a list on our Facebook, Instagram and Twitter of the items we are short of currently. These posts can also be seen on the front page of our website.

Discover ‘The King’s Mile’ where you’ll find plenty of fascinating sights, shops and eateries.
This is the centre of ‘Independent, Local Canterbury’ and is as historic as it is beautiful. Don’t miss the much-photographed ‘Wonky Bookshop’ with its architectural jetties and gravity-defying frontage! A few doors along, you will find Conquest House, where (it is alleged) four knights met and stayed overnight as they planned the murder of Archbishop Thomas Becket at Canterbury Cathedral. This deed changed the course of history and put Canterbury on the world map forever. Admire the great views of the back of the Cathedral, and historic buildings belonging to The King’s School, with blossom and blue skies framing the picture. The King’s Mile is home to some wonderful, independent shops. You’ll find a brilliantly inventive retro games store, an authentic family run Caribbean BBQ house (don’t miss the fried chicken and rice and peas), an artisan chocolatier, ceramics painted by the renowned Canterbury Firmin family, trendy cafes, hairdressers, specialist food stores, olde worlde pubs, a fair trade store, a florist, an art gallery (featuring everyone from Tracey Emin to JMW Turner originals), antiques dealer, bridalwear, bookshops, homewares, an artisan cheese shop, a fresh food bistro, jewellers and so much more.
