CANTERBURY SATURDAY 9TH JULY 2016 a little history... On 12th July 1174 Plantagenet King Henry II came to Canterbury to perform penance for the death of Archbishop Thomas Becket four years earlier. Becket’s murder shocked the entire medieval world and Henry’s role in that (“who will rid me of this turbulent priest?”) meant that he was held responsible when his knights assassinated Becket in Canterbury Cathedral on 29th December 1170. By 1174, when embroiled in ‘The Great War’ with four of his sons, who were supported by their mother, Queen Eleanor of Aquitaine, Henry came to Canterbury to perform penance at Becket’s tomb in the Cathedral. He walked barefoot through the city in sackcloth, was scourged by monks and spent that night in prayer at Becket’s tomb. The following morning news arrived of a major victory for Henry’s forces, vindicating his decision to atone for the Archbishop’s murder. He went on to win ‘The Great War’ against the rebels, including his own (rather dysfunctional!) family.
...and a lot of fun
for children of all ages... even ‘Middle Ages‘!
Medieval Pageant
To mark this amazing event in our city’s history, we will recreate Henry’s walk through the city, but this time accompanied by his Queen, Eleanor. As well as the royal couple, we will have other medieval characters and a host of children celebrating our ancient heritage with the sounds, colours and fun of the medieval world. The parade starts at 10am by the Westgate Towers and will then process around the city centre.
Medieval Family Trail
Venues across the city will be open between 11am and 5pm, offering a host of activities and insight into medieval Canterbury and what life was like here nearly 800 years ago! From the Westgate to Whitefriars, from the Beaney to The Canterbury Tales attraction, and from the ancient Canterbury Castle to the city’s three parish churches, St Dunstan’s, St Peter’s and St Mildred’s, there is a whole medieval world waiting to be discovered! Visit four or more and receive a FREE chocolate medallion from Canterbury Cathedral Shop. See the Medieval Pageant Brochure for details, available at venues across the city and the Beaney Tourist Information Centre or search for Canterbury Medieval Pageant and Family Trail on Facebook. Canterbury because we love our city Canterbury is at the heart of the Garden of England and in that corner of England that’s almost touching France. With our world famous Cathedral, three universities and international visitors we have a distinctly cosmopolitan feel. People come here from across the globe for world-class heritage, for culture and festivals, to visit and to study, to shop, eat and hang out. It’s lively and fun. But it’s also remarkably easy – in a moment – to step off the beaten track into some quiet oasis where you’ll hear nothing but birdsong, and the splash of oars on the narrow, gently flowing River Stour. You may be in a city, but you get a strong sense of being in the Garden of England too. There are riverside gardens and even a cider-making orchard within the city itself. And this year, Canterbury is a finalist in the Britain in Bloom campaign, so watch out for our judges during July and August!
Here is your guide to our beautiful garden city Canterbury Christ Church University, situated just outside the city walls, has a campus, open to the public with some beautiful small spaces, with planting themed around the St Augustines Abbey which occupied part of the site in Medieval times. A great place for a secluded ‘urban picnic’! Canterbury Cathedral precincts surround the stunning Cathedral and with an ancient herb garden and tranquil secluded spaces it is a ‘must see’ for everyone.
Franciscan Gardens are the classic ‘secret garden’ in the city. Open 10am – 4pm most days and situated just off Stour Street it is an amazing hidden gem. Tell noone and enjoy! Westgate Gardens next to Canterbury’s famous Westgate welcome the River Stour into the heart of the city. Walk through the formal planting and out along the Stour Footpath towards Chartham to realise how close the city is to the Kent countryside.
Whitefriars Shopping Centre would not be everyone’s idea of a garden; however, with their superb floral pavilion, burgeoning hanging baskets, water clock designed by a local school, water harvesting and bee hives on the roof it is a world leading exponent of sustainability. (Great shopping too!)
The River Stour passes through our ancient city in two branches so don’t be surprised if it keeps ‘popping up’ as you stroll through the quieter streets; enjoy a boat trip and see the city from an entirely new perspective or seek out Sollys Orchard, Abbots Mill and the Greyfriars Gardens to enjoy the city and its river in a new way.
Dane John Garden is a lovely open space with superb planting cheek by jowl with the city centre, for a stroll, picnic or just to sit and enjoy the flowers.
Canterbury in Bloom is a partnership of local organisations and businesses working together to make Canterbury a cleaner and greener city for all.
If you live in the city and want to get involved in preparation for the Bloom judges visits (20th July & 3rd August), here are some ideas: • Put up a hanging basket or plant up a plant pot or window box • Give your front garden a spruce up • Arrange a litter pick with your neighbours • Adopt a public flower bed - but don’t forget to ask the council for permission first!
