Come Chill Wit h Us! Mayor’s Message Welcome to our 2018 season of events! As the temperatures warm and both kids and adults head outdoors to take advantage of the many recreational amenities that Herriman has to offer, I am reminded again of the outstanding community we have. Tucked up next to the western mountains, our city has all of the characteristics that make communities great. With our vast trail system, new soccer stadium, three splash pads, a reservoir, and numerous parks, there is no shortage of recreational activities available to us. And now, as we enter our events season, the summer fun is just beginning! I am so thankful to live in a city that embraces that community feeling — the “Herriman Feel” — that I have grown so proud of. I look forward to the PRCA Rodeo, Fort Herriman Towne Days, the Arts Council’s summer production of “Chitty, Chitty, Bang, Bang,” the Enduro Challenge and the many other fun events that are planned this summer. Look for all the details throughout this magazine. Herriman City is proud of the community we live in and the opportunities we have to gather and enjoy the company of our residents, reinforcing our strong community spirit. Don’t let the sizzling temperatures keep you behind closed doors — come chill with us!

Grand Marshal

Former Mayor J. Lynn Crane named parade grand marshal Mayor J. Lynn Crane has called Herriman his home for nearly 80 years. He is a descendent of the original founders of Herriman and he has spent a lifetime serving his community. From the late 1970s through 1999, Lynn served either as a member or president of the Herriman Community Council (then a part of Salt Lake County). It was under his leadership that Herriman filed for incorporation in 1999. He was appointed as the first mayor of Herriman, where he served for nearly 12 years. Mayor Crane led the creation of a new city government and oversaw responsible and amazing growth from just under 1,000 residents in 2000 to over 25,000 when he left office. A few of his accomplishments include convincing the state to start building the Mountain View Corridor on the south end of the valley in Herriman first, which was not the original plan. He also prodded Salt Lake County to invest in a state-of-the-art recreation center and library in Herriman. Anyone who knows Mayor Crane understands

Mayor J. Lynn Crane that he loves Herriman. Many of the amenities residents enjoy today were solidified under his leadership, including over 150 open spaces, parks, recreation areas and volunteer groups like the Herriman Arts Council and the Herriman Historical Committee. When the mayor retired, he worked with the Historical Committee to publish a new history of the city that addressed a timeline from the early settlement in the late 1800s through incorporation. He was a leader with integrity, sensitivity, and a passion for excellence that motivated others to embrace a vision of growth founded on the love of community and the importance of volunteerism.

About Herriman City Herriman City, with a population of over 46,000, is located in the southwest portion of Salt Lake County. SADDLE BRONC RIDING

Friday Sponsor: AA Callisters Saturday Sponsor: IFA

BAREBACK RIDING

Sponsor: J. Wright Companies As the bronc and rider burst from the chutes, the rider must have both spurs touching the horse’s shoulders until the horse’s front feet hit the ground after the initial jump from the chutes. This is called “marking out.” If the cowboy fails to do this, he is disqualified. The rider earns points for maintaining upper body control while moving his feet in a toes-turned-out rhythmic motion in time with the horse’s bucking action for eight seconds. To stay aboard the horse, the bareback rider uses a rigging made of leather and constructed to meet PRCA safety specifications. The rigging resembles a suitcase handle on a strap. It is placed on the horse’s withers and secured with a cinch.

CHUTE SPONSORS:

Every move the bronc rider makes must be synchronized with the movement of the horse. The cowboy’s objective is a fluid ride, somewhat in contrast to the wilder and less controlled rides of bareback riders. A saddle bronc rider has only a thick rein attached to his horse’s halter. Using one hand, the cowboy tries to stay securely seated in his saddle.

BULL RIDING

Sponsor:

Bull Riding is the most popular and most dangerous rodeo event. Riders strap themselves to the back of a 2,000-pound bull with a thick, flat, braided bull rope. Attached to the underside of the bull rope is a large cowbell that adds a sound effect to an exciting ride while also acting as a weight to help the rope come off the bull after the eight-second ride. Both bull and rider are judged in this event. 16 • Herriman City Events 2018 - www.herriman.org

2018 Fort Herriman PRCA Rodeo

STEER WRESTLING

Sponsor: Dodge Ram In steer wrestling (also known as “bulldogging”), the rider leans from atop his running horse onto the back of a 600-pound steer, brings it to a halt, and tosses the animal on its side to stop the clock. This event requires strength, speed and timing.

TIE-DOWN

Sponsor: Dodge Ram Tie-Down, or calf roping, is the authentic ranch chore and the oldest of rodeo’s timed events. In this event, the rider ropes the calf from horseback at full speed, dismounts and runs the length of the rope to the calf. The roper will then get the calf on its side and tie three legs together with a six-foot pigging string.

2018 Fort Herriman PRCA Rodeo

TEAM ROPING

Friday Sponsor: LACE by Louise Saturday Sponsor: Canyon Point Homes Team Roping is the only team event in rodeo and originated from ranch chores. The team is made up of a header and a heeler. The header ropes the horns, then dallies — or wraps — his rope around his saddle horn and turns the steer to the left. The heeler must then throw a loop with precision timing to catch the steer by the hind feet.

BARREL RACING

Sponsor: Dodge Ram Barrel racing is a horse race with sharp turns. The cowgirl rides her horse at top speed in a clover leaf pattern around three barrels in the arena. Tipping a barrel is permitted, but if it gets knocked over, a five-second penalty is added to her time. It’s all about speed in this event!

Rodeo Clown Jeff “Slim” Garner The bull riders won’t be the only brave souls in the arena at the Fort Herriman PRCA Rodeo this year. With a 2,000-pound bull bearing down on you, it helps to have a sense of humor. It also helps to have a barrel to hide in. Jeff ”Slim” Garner is a secondgeneration rodeo clown who started clowning around when he was 17 years old. “Slim” provides a line of defense for bull riders in the arena. While swapping one-liners with rodeo announcer Chad Nicholson, he also performs the important task of distracting the bulls and keeping them away from the riders.

Stock Contractor Bar-T Rodeo Bar-T Rodeo has twice been given the Remuda Award for best bucking horse breed program in 2006 and 2011. In 2002, Bar-T Rodeo helped produce the first Olympic Rodeo in Farmington, Utah. Several of their bulls have been selected to go to the Wrangler National Finals Rodeo in Las Vegas, Nevada.

2018 Fort Herriman   PRCA Rodeo

Rodeo Announcer Chad Nicholson A former rodeo contestant, Chad Nicholson fell into the business by complete accident. While in college at Tarleton State University in Stephenville, Texas, he was working on-air for a radio station and was asked to announce a local junior rodeo. It was instant chemistry, and since then he has announced professional rodeos and various other events in 39 states, Canada and Australia. Chad is widely known for his powerful voice, smooth delivery and, as a former U.S. Marine, his signature American Flag tribute, “If Old Glory Could Speak,” typically performed in the opening ceremonies.

Fort Herriman PRCA Rodeo Committee A big thanks to the Fort Herriman PRCA Rodeo Committee for their dedication and hard work year after year: Ronnie Gunn, Phil Spainhower, Dee Oakeson, Raquel DeLuca, Mary Nelson and Rich Nelson.
