Dear residents of Spanish Fork,

May is a special and hectic month! Holiday celebrations around Cinde de Mayo, Mother’s Day, Memorial Day, and even May the 4th Be With You (for the Star Wars fanatics). Then there are graduations, final performances, exams, field trips . . . the list goes on! For us, we really wanted to give a special focus to all the mothers in our wonderful community! Residents submitted some fun and touching tributes — check them out on pages 18-19. This short poem captures how many of us adults feel the more life we experience (especially with our own children): “Put Up With Me” I'm glad that you're my mother, Kind and caring and strong. Coz surely no-one else, Could have put up with me this long! ~Holly Giffers

Be sure to send us your favorite recipes to feature in our food section, and tell us about those families and people in your neighborhoods who deserve a shoutout! We want this magazine to be yours and feature the people and things you care about! With love,

My Pet Community — Meet My Pet

Brooks Brooks is an 11 year old Goldendoodle. He is a funloving dog who wants to be around family. Some of his favorite things to do are playing ball, long walks, and playing in the snow.

Suki Suki is the sweetest kitty you'll ever meet. She never hisses or growls. She is kind to everyone (after she gets brave enough to venture out of hiding). We love having her as an addition to our family.

by Jason Robbins —Resident Submission

Does your dog incessantly jump on people when they come through your door? How do you get it to stop? At the root of the issue, we’ve got to keep in mind that dogs are pack animals. When someone else comes into their territory, or their pack, it is only natural they will have an explosion of questions in their mind: who is this person, what authority do they have to walk right into our space, are they strong or weak, is this a long-term or short-term stay, will they improve the pack, or drag it down, where do I fit into this new dynamic? All these questions lead to one big adrenaline rush. When we humans get an adrenaline rush, we usually handle it by burning it off (going running, or exercising) or calming it down (listening to music to get into the right state of mind). Dogs must be trained to handle their adrenaline rush. We all know the scenario. There’s a knock or ring at the door. Your dog starts barking and rushes to the door. A battle ensues as you try to open the door and pull the dog back while they push forward. You might be yelling “stop!” This commotion only adds to the adrenaline rush your dog is experiencing, making the situation worse. We want to diffuse the adrenaline rush. There are some methods to manage the situation better. If you know someone is coming over soon, put the dog in the kennel to avoid the crazy scuffle. Or, use a doggie gate to keep them from reaching the front door. These methods are a good way to start solving the problem, but they don’t really change the behavior. To change your dog’s behavior, the process is to teach impulse control in a variety of ways that add up to change the chemical makeup of your pet. Enforce boundaries by teaching your dog a place-command, such as a down-stay, or a sit-stay. Teach them to heel, or wait at the door. Over time, these impulse control commands will transform your dog. Even adult dogs can change their behavior. It is possible to have the doorbell ring, and have your dog simply go over and lay down on their appointed spot. Find tutorials online to start implementing them with your pet, or take them to a trainer.

Health & Wellness — Expert Article

Community Expert: Hearing Health Jessica Nelson, BC-HIS

What is the NUMBER ONE thing you can do to prevent dementia? Every 3 seconds another person is diagnosed with dementia. That is another person who has been given a diagnosis of fatal brain failure, another family that will have to pay the emotional toll and economic price of caring for a loved one at least 10 years beyond that person’s mental capabilities. At an average cost of $57,000 per year to care for a loved one with dementia – it is also one of the costliest diseases on the planet. However, there is hope. The 2020 Lancet Journal (one of the most widely read medical journals in the world) recently laid out their “how to” in preventing dementia. Guess what was the NUMBER ONE item on their list of things that could help avoid dementia? Treat hearing loss. Besides being linked with dementia and cognitive decline, hearing loss is also associated with increased risk of falls, increased risk of isolation and depression, decreased quality of life, as well as decreased earning power for those in the workforce. If you have a family history of dementia or do you answer yes to any of the following questions? If so, it is recommended that you schedule a hearing evaluation with a qualified hearing professional: Do you feel like people mumble more than they used to? Do you have a more

difficult time understanding conversations when there’s noise in the background? Do you feel like you hear just fine but don’t always understand every word? Do you have tinnitus (ringing, buzzing, or other sounds in your ears)? Do other people tell you you have the t.v. or music up too loud? Do you feel more tired or mentally worn out at the end of the day than you used to? Make sure that the hearing provider you choose does a complete evaluation, not just an audiogram where you “hear a beep and push a button.” Make sure the provider screens your cognitive function, tests the physiology of the ear, tests your ability to hear in noise as well as your speech recognition and uses verification equipment to ensure the treatment prescription is correct. In our office, we only use NeurotechnologyTM to treat hearing loss. NeurotechnologyTM is technology that delivers sound stimulation to the brain that it is missing with hearing loss, and does it in a way that makes conversation clearer, not just louder. NeurotechnologyTM is proven to improve speech understanding in background noise, delivers 30% more sound to the brain, and best of all, reduces listening effort required, leaving you with more energy at the end of the day!

Treating Hearing Loss is the #1 Modifiable Risk Factor for Dementia*

5 Benefits of Treating Hearing Loss: Increased Quality of Life Increased Cognitive Function Reduced Tinnitus Reduced Risk of Dementia Reduced Risk of Falls

Logan (15) makes the 3rd Musketeer in the family of three mechanical men. You’ll find him enjoying the thrill of rugged off-road excursions up local canyons with his older brother and Dad. However, his hands spend a bit less time on mechanics, and more time on his keyboard. Logan has a knack for computer games. He’s so good, he’s found a niche in uploading videos he records of himself navigating games and publishing his “game hacks” on Twitch. Keeara works as an assistant manager at JoAnn’s, where she says her paycheck is constantly threatened by tempting crafts and sewing projects. She’s a skilled seamstress. Remember how quick her 2 month engagement was? In that short amount of time, as a fulltime student, 19-year old Keeara sewed her own wedding dress!

Keeara has sewn several prom dresses for her daughter, and also two other wedding dresses. One such dream wedding dress would have cost her sister-in-law $10,000. So it was only a dream - until Keeara took matters into her own hands. For only the cost of the fabric ($250) Keeara expertly produced the dream $10,000 wedding dress in only three months! Talk about thrift! Her daughter’s wedding dress also benefited from Keeara’s Photo by: Sarah Watson sewing skills. Regina found her ideal dress on the rack for a steal of a deal… but it didn’t fit. After Keeara worked her magic, however, it fit like a charm! When people realize home-made can be best-made, the look on their faces is what brings Keeara great satisfaction. Sports — Student Athlete of the Month — Sponsored by Tim Dahle Ford Sheridan Liggett is the Tim Dahle Ford Student Athlete of the Month. Sheridan is a senior at Maple Mountain High School and finished fourth in the state of Utah in scoring (19.6 ppg) and was selected to play in the UWBCA all-star game as well as the Academic All State team for basketball. Additionally, Sheridan was the MaxPreps player of the game seven times this season, which included a 37-point game versus in-town rival Spanish Fork on Jan. 18 (she also had a near triple-double in the rematch on Feb. 8 with 26 points, 12 assists, and 8 rebounds). Liggett has accepted a full-ride scholarship offer from the University of Seattle. Starting at the age of 5, Sheridan wanted a basketball hoop for her birthday, and played in the Bantam league in her elementary years. When she found herself spending most of her time on the bench, her father, Scott, let her know that coaches never bench their best players. That lit the fire that hasn’t burned out. Soon after, Sheridan was waking up her dad at 5 a.m. to go to the gym to practice. That habit has continued to today with an inexhaustible energy.

Nominate a HS student! Email studentathlete@mycommunityutah.com Needless to say, Liggett is competitive and determined to push herself to be her best. As a student, Sheridan works extremely hard to keep a 4.0 GPA. History is her favorite subject, and math comes a little easy, she says, but subjects such as English really push her. She will stay up all night to finish papers if it comes down to it (she has several times). In her spare time outside of school and basketball, Sheridan is a referee for club soccer and also excels in that. Not only is Sheridan competitive and fierce, but she has a tender heart and a knack for looking outside of herself and giving attention to others, especially those who might be down and need a friend. She’s confident in who she is and being in her own skin. She's also funny and creative. Her biggest supporters she would like to thank are her parents, and three of her coaches: Coach Green at MMHS and two club coaches, Charlotte McFarland and Anita Rowland. Beginners Guide to a Red Rock Getaway So you live in Utah and you’ve never ventured south to partake in the many red rock offerings? That’s okay, we won’t hold it against you. But maybe here we can give you a little bit of information that will take away some apprehension, if any, and give you a reason to go. We’ll focus on going to Moab, since there are so many options for families down there. Arches National Park is a must see. With so many amazing arches, you can’t go wrong. Plan to hike the Windows Primitive Loop (1 mile),

Double Arch (0.8 miles), Landscape Arch (1.6 miles), and of course, the pinnacle of arches, Delicate Arch (3 miles). Outside of Arches other wonders of nature await. Walk under Corona Arch (3 mile hike) and also take pictures on the railroad between the cliffs by the start of the hike. Gemini Bridges (7.7 mile drive) is something unique where you’ll be on top of the bridge/arch. Most people don’t equate Moab with water, but there is plenty, if you know where to look. Check out Mill Creek

trail (1.8 miles) or stop by and take a quick walk to Faux Falls. Enjoy some cool water after a long day in the sun. There be giants in Moab as well, and not the rock kind - dinosaurs! The kids will love going to Moab Giants Dinosaur Park and walking around the amazing prehistoric world they’ve created. It’s the perfect combination of science and adventure. Add to all of this the delicious food that Moab has to offer, and you’re in for a real treat. You can stay in one of many hotels/vacation homes, or enjoy simple camping at multiple sites or even on some BLM land for free. There is so much more to see and do, but this is plenty to get you out for a quick trip to the red rocks. Enjoy!

Sponsored by Spring Creek Mechanical — Performing Arts Student of the Month — Arts

Taya Wescott Taya Wescott is the Spring Creek Mechanical Performing Arts Student of the Month! Taya is an impressive senior at American Leadership Academy, and is actively involved in the theatre program. Not only does she sing, dance, and act with natural enthusiasm, she also demonstrates noteworthy leadership as the student director for this year’s competition One-Act. She picked up her directing skills and ability to complete a project from start to finish from her Mom, who ran a ballroom dancing company when Taya was young. Even at age 12, Taya easily took on the role of student director in a junior play. At age 17, she became the youngest manager at Maurice’s in the University Mall (even though their policy is no managers younger than 18 - Taya proved to be the exception). She is ALA’s Sterling Scholar for vocal music and is a mezzo soprano. Taya's roles at ALA include Fiona in Shrek, Jo in Little Women, Lady Macbeth and Viola in Shakesplosion!, Leonato in Much Ado About Nothing, and Emily Webb in Our Town. Her awards include a first place medal in pantomime at State Drama in 2021, second place in Duo/Trio scenes at the Utah Shakespeare Festival competition in 2021, and first place in Duo/ Trio Dance also at USF in 2021. On top of all that, she has a 3.9 GPA.

This girl has drive to see all her ideas to fulfillment. When she decides to do anything, she does it 100%. She usually drops jaws in the process. At age 15, she picked up a ukulele and utilized YouTube to learn how to play it on her own. Accomplishing that, she did the same with the guitar. In one day, she self-taught herself how to play, composing a song with lyrics and recording it. The final product (an mp3 file) was then presented to her mother, who had no idea what was coming. Taya is ambitious and thrives with a no-fear personality. For the past year, she has been selling her own clothing line with self-designed logos. She created her own website (rosemaryapparel.com) and researched e-commerce methods all on her own. She then presented her plan to her parents, who run a screenprinting and embroidery shop. They now fulfill her orders. Roller skating is a favorite activity and Taya is on the rolling skating derby team. She also sketches and paints (again, thanks to YouTube). Taya will be attending Snow College in the fall of 2022, majoring in theatre with an emphasis in directing. She also plans to minor in business. We know this girl is going to go places. She takes herself wherever she sets her sights on. Nominate a HS student! Email performingarts@mycommunityutah.com

Michelle Marziale

I love my mom! My whole life she’s worked so hard for my family. She’d wake up early every day to make us breakfast before school, even when I was in highschool. She currently works two jobs, and still manages to come home and make delicious dinners, support whatever sports event one of my siblings might have that day, and keep the house clean. She sends us weekly quotes and texts to help us know how much she loves us, and to check in. I admire my mom more than anyone else in the world and hope I can be just like her one day. –Courtlyne

My mom has always been my biggest fan. Even though she has passed away I still feel her with me loving and supporting me. My mom literally lived her life for my brothers and I. To this day nothing feels real until I have talked to my mom about it. My mom will always be my best friend. –Trish

Julie

She is simply the best Mom-in-Law. On the day I married her amazing daughter, I felt a twinge of sadness because my own Mom passed away and wouldn't be there. But every day, Julie is a phenomenally supportive, kind, and loving “second Mom” to me. I am amazed at her positive, joyful spirit. Most meaningfully, she shares her time with us. Time to laugh and plant flowers in the summer, time to catch up over a warm meal in the winter, and time to 'check in' with each other when we don't realize how much we need it. We love you, Mom. –Derek

Diana Witt

My mom had 12 children, two of which were born in the front seat of the car (she delivered them without any assistance!). My mom has endured the most unimaginable heartache, and yet remained kind, generous, and forgiving. She has been such an influence in my life, teaching me a strong work ethic and how to be independent, but also kind and compassionate to others. She has taught me how to be the best mom I can be. She is a remarkable person. –Alicia

Isabel Perez

Growing up me and my mom had some rough times. We've been homeless three times in the 33 years that I've been here on this earth. The one thing that my mom has taught me is strength and faith. My mother is the strongest woman I know. –Joel

Kathy Zobell Underwood

You inspire everyone you see, you have the most loving and caring heart. You give it your all to be there for all of your children and grandchildren. Your talents keep me in awe everyday, I do not think there is anything you can not do. The selfless way you help everyone and never expect anything in return, you just do it because you are so loving and caring. Thank you for everything you have taught me, and all that you do for me, the kids, and everyone you come in contact with. I am so lucky to have you and I am so proud that you are my Mom. I love you Mom with all my heart. –Jackie

Barbara Kapel

I love my mom for many reasons. Two that stand out to me are that she’s patient and that she quietly serves others and doesn’t seek recognition or repayment. For example, she loves working in the yard, and she recently volunteered to dig up a tree that had started growing in my yard and that I was planning to pay a company to remove. She spent many hours digging up the tree. Wow! -Suzy

Janet

She came into my life after my mother-in-law passed away. She went from 1 daughter, 2 granddaughters, and 2 great grandsons, to a million of us. She's shown love to each of us, and she always makes sure I am fed well and get the soft chair. She would take in every stray animal if she could. She has a heart of gold. I'm so glad I have her in my life. –Jen Elizabeth Ann Mayberry Elizabeth has one of the most kind, thoughtful, and giving hearts. I am blessed to have been a recipient of her generosity and thoughtfulness throughout my life. As my “second mother” in our home, she cared for me, taught me, shared with me and loved me. I am so grateful for her motherly influence and friendship. -Corinne

Kathy Bjarnason

My mother has the superpower of being able to make everything alright when I'm going through a rough time. She has a giving heart and rejoices in the happiness of others. I admire her strength and fortitude through difficult situations. I have a pretty incredible mother. –Aubry

Brenda Symons

Growing up my mom always taught us how to serve. She would do it from writing to missionaries, taking secret presents to families in the ward for Christmas, making lots and lots of baby blankets for whoever she knew was having a baby, and so much more. She was a woman of great faith. I always admired that and so much more about her. –Mike

Joyce Elder

Growing up, I was taught by example how to be kind and loving. My Grandma Joyce loves everyone she meets. She has a wonderful sense of humor, she will laugh and cry with you. Joyce has a way of making you feel as if she has been waiting for you to arrive at any gathering. She can tell a great story and captivate many audiences young and old. I would love to be like her when I grow up. To know Joyce is to love Joyce and be loved. –Rachel

Patti Mayberry

Words cannot adequately express my relationship, connection, and love for this woman. My heart swells, tears come to my eyes, my face lights up, and my breath quivers, all in awe, admiration, enjoyment, gratitude, and love for her. She has been my teacher, guardian, number one fan, confidant, chauffeur, chef, entertainer, and mentor. She is my best friend. I love her SO much! Thank you mommy! –Corinne

Justine Howard

She understands and values the importance of making happy memories, and because of that, my childhood was full of lots of fun and wonderful memories. She is also a really great example of generosity. and equipment for almost as long as they’ve been living in Spanish Fork - 18 years. The Terry family has two dogs and three cats. Keeara is more of a dog person and likes to think the dogs are hers. But, since Brian is the one who can whistle, they answer to him. Keeara may not whistle, but she can sing! (Brian doesn’t know it, but he has a nice baritone voice worthy of more attention than just spaces he thinks he has to himself.) Keeara’s been a soprano in Provo-based Wasatch Choral Group for three years. They perform for various fundraising purposes. This upcoming May 12th, at 7:00, her Choral group will be singing at the Provo library to raise funds re-roofing Provo’s historic church house, where the group rehearses. Put it on your calendar! With so many skills packed into their small 1890 home, Spanish Fork sure has a golden nugget in it’s back pocket: the Terry Family!

fat, and prepare to be amazed at the difference!

Leveling Up Your BBQ Game Dreading the start of BBQ season? Maybe it’s time to level up your BBQ game with the right gear and techniques to make you the star of your summer cookouts. Here are a few tips to get you there:

• Use a thermometer to monitor the temperature of your grill surface and the internal temp of the cooking food? You should. You must. Just do it. • Salt! People never use enough of it!

You should add salt at around 1.5-2% of the weight of the food. Weigh it out and sprinkle it on. It will look like too much, but when you taste it, you’ll see. You don’t even realize how much flavor you’ve been missing.

• Get a broiler torch. The Iwatani

culinary torch, or the Searzall from Booker & Dax are my favorites. For some foods, even a heat gun from the hardware store can do amazing things.

• Have you been cooking on a gas grill? Try charcoal. The 22-inch Weber Kettle is a good place to start. It’s cheap, • Clean your grill! Dirty grills are well made, easy to use and has endless nasty, and relying on the grill heat to accessories to make it more versatile. sanitize it isn’t enough. Get the grill hot, • Is a grill the only outdoor cooking scrub the grates top and bottom with an oiled wire brush, then wipe it down appliance you with an oiled paper have? Expand towel. And after all your arsenal with that is done, don’t an outdoor fryer, forget to run your griddle, smoker, wire brush through stove, Dutch oven the dishwasher on table, portable pizza a high temp cycle, oven, or broiler. because cleaning • Grind your own a grill with a dirty meat. A #12 meat brush kind of grinder is pretty affordable these days. defeats the purpose. Buy whole cuts of meat, trim them out • Toss fat trimmings directly on the properly, adjust the ratio of lean to

hot coals to increase the “char grill” flavor.

• Don’t just fill your grill to the brim with charcoal. Think about how you’re going to be cooking, and weigh your charcoal before adding it, based on how hot your grill needs to be. • Use lump charcoal for fast, high heat cooks. Use briquettes for moderate, long-lasting, steady heat. • Push the charcoal to one side to create multiple heat zones so you can sear, then slow cook to perfection. Lastly, get to know your equipment. This means you need to cook out a lot. Use your grill for things you would normally cook on the stove or in the oven. Learn how much charcoal, and which brand, produces the heat that you need for different dishes. Then write down your method and results so you can duplicate them every time. If your grill skills are a bit plebeian, this will get you to a solid journeyman level. But if you want to learn some more advanced tricks, keep an eye on the My Community - Utah Facebook page for more outdoor cooking tips throughout this BBQ season!

8 Helpful Hints for Raised Bed Gardens for beginners JoAnn Grady —Resident Submission

Knowing what works best in your yard is important at the beginning of the growing season, so you don't have to wait another year to get it right.

#2– Planning your irrigation system is important, a drip system is not only convenient but helpful when unable to water when gone.

#1– Location of your beds is essential. Take a day and watch the trajectory of the sun to optimize it for your garden. Most plants do best in full sun.

#3– Investing in good soil makes a huge difference. You need good drainage and compost at least 1/3 of your soil using water retention substances like peat moss, coconut core, etc. You want good soil for your roots to grow.

want the tallest plants in the back of the bed and the shortest plants in the front. You want to avoid the tall plants shading the smaller ones. #7– Bed prep for the next season. When your growing season is done put a protective layer of mulch on the top (leaves, grass clippings, compost, etc). This will decompose and feed the soil over the off-season and nourish it for the next year.

#4– Mulching the top layer will help protect your soil and keep it moist. Shredded straw, grass clippings or wood chips (make sure wood is organic) work great. #5– Map out your beds to leave enough space for you to work in between. A good rule of thumb is 2 feet. #6– Think about how the plants will shade once they’ve grown. For example, a garden facing south will

Home Improvement Projects for Spring It’s time to throw off the cloak of hibernation and get active again! We all want to be outside and whip things back into shape. After a cold winter inside, it’s time to freshen up not only our outfits, bodies, and lifestyles, but also our abode - our houses! They want a new spring updo too! Here are a few simple home improvement projects that will put a fresh new face on your home to enjoy all summer long. Stain the deck— A nice deck is the perfect extension of your home’s living space into the outdoors. It's the place for barbecues, good conversation, and watching children play out on the lawn. After winter, wooden decks can look a little worn and shabby, maybe even becoming splintered. A fresh coat of stain can change the color of the wood, or accentuate the wood grain. It also seals it up against spring or summer rainstorms (or sprinklers). Decks should be stained at least once per year.

visitors get their first impression of your space - why not lend them a hand up to your front porch? A colored railing brings an instant pop of color not dependent on finicky flower baskets (for those who don’t have a green thumb). Plus, it will last for years to come. Update your address display— These are your numbers, so why not personalize them? It can add spark to your doorway and brighten up your entrance too. Add some colorful tile or brick behind your new digits. Consider adding backlighting so they are visible at night. Stencil large numbers onto your sidewalk. Upgrade outdoor lanterns— Replace the old functiononly lightbulb outside your front door with some new personality in a stylish lantern. Add matching lanterns on either side of your garage too! This is a simple touch that can change a home’s appearance in big ways. Change the colors of interior walls— After being stuck inside all winter, you might be ready for a change. Applying a new coat of color to just a couple walls in main living spaces can give a room an entirely new atmosphere. Tape color swatches to the walls needing a new coat to see how those colors look throughout the day before settling on a new color.

Install a new railing— A new railing can bring an instant face lift to your home. Your entryway is where

Add crown molding— Pick a couple of rooms to upgrade by adding crown molding between the wall and the ceiling. Or pick a prominent interior doorway to frame with some molding to make a statement. Consider painting the molding an accent color to really add a unique touch.

Around the Town — Resident Spotlight

Brad the Barber For 43 years, a small barbershop on 54 North Main Street has been a second home to Brad the Barber. He’s welcomed customers of 30+ years as life-long friends into his parlor on a daily basis. Everywhere he goes, he sees a face he once had in his barber’s chair. Brad didn’t know he was going to be a life-long barber. He grew up on a family farm in Idaho, assuming that was his life’s path. His grandfather was a barber in a fancy shop in Ogden during the early 1900’s. He trimmed Brad’s toddler hair before passing away. He must have planted a seed, because at age 23, Brad certified in the barbering trade through SLC’s technical college. He figured it would be a fun and useful skill to have. In the 1970’s, a standard haircut was $3.00. Brad worked in a handful of barber shops in Idaho just one day a week while he did other things. Cutting hair was just a fun side job. Then, he found himself trimming hair full-time at the BYU Barbershop, which lasted for 9 years. He also worked at the Provo Missionary Training Center for 7 years. Brad cut the red ribbon by making the very first missionary haircut at the MTC. Brad’s skill had him scheduled several days each month cutting hair at the old folk’s home, the boys’ ranch, and even the Utah County jail for a couple of decades. Even still, Brad wasn’t planning on being a life-long barber. But then one day, Spanish Fork’s resident barber, Bill Vest, called him. He was looking to retire soon, and wanted to know if Brad had any interest in his barber shop on main street. So, Brad and his wife, DeAnn, came to inspect the small space that would come to support their family of 5 children for the next 4 decades. Even today, the original mirrors and coat rack remain the same as when originally installed in 1963. In all that time, there has not been one day where Brad has regretted going to work. He loves the companionship with the community. All 5 of his children played sports and Brad could easily arrange his own schedule to attend their ball games between customer appointments. At 68 years of age, Brad is retiring after 43 pleasant years keeping Spanish Fork neat and trim. His son, Jesse, will be partnering with a friend named Jay to keep up with the steady stream of friends in their second home, the barbershop on main street.

Expert Article — Around the Town Community Expert: Hospice Care Carma Karsten

The Benefits of Using Local Hospice As our community grows so do the varying needs of those that live in our community. As consumers, we have become accustomed to and expect options based on our personal preferences, wants, and needs. Whether it’s our groceries, insurance, clothing, automobile purchase and repairs, or healthcare, we all want to make sure whatever it is, it is a good fit for us. Local businesses contribute a great deal to not only offering us choices with a personal touch, they provide goods and services based on their knowledge of the community and its needs. Naturally, these business owners have a vested interest in the community they operate in. Local business owners are often part of the local chamber of commerce, provide support and sponsorship of the local schools and sports teams. They donate their time, services, and money to those in need in our community. It’s also important to mention they generate tax revenue and employ those living in our community as well. Local businesses are a part of what makes any community unique. Every time you choose to use a local

#mycommunityspanishfork

business, know that you are making a difference for your hometown. A big benefit of using a local hospice company is you’re really going to feel a stronger connection to those providing care for your loved one. You will be very involved with everyone on the team, almost as if they become extended family. This is because they handle every aspect of a patient’s care, from medical, to emotional, and even financial— and truly have their back as if they were a part of our own family. Being like a close family, the hospice team is able to evolve and adjust to each patient’s specific situation. There is more freedom to cater to the needs, wishes, and values of you and your loved one. Being smaller, local hospice agencies usually don’t have to jump through a series of hoops to make a change; they can place a phone call and make adjustments happen quickly. Hospice care decreases the burden on family, decreases the family's likelihood of having a complicated grief and prepares family members for their loved one's death.

Places in Utah You Need to Experience! What can we say? We're living in a special place here in Utah. We’ve got some of the world’s most magnificent landscapes. Here are some neat, lesser-known places to take your family this summer. Fremont Indian State Park and Museum Discover artifacts, petroglyphs, and pictographs left behind by the Fremont Indians. During the construction of Interstate 70, the largest known Fremont Indian village was uncovered. This museum preserves treasures from the site, including pottery, baskets, and arrowheads. Spend a day at the museum, take a hike on the trails, and then camp at nearby Castle Rock Campground or Sam Stowe Campground. There are short, maintained trails which lead past several impressive panels of rock art figures. The interpretive center there focuses on the evolution of Fremont Indian Cultures from 500 A.D. to 1300 A.D. Find it at the Hwy 89/I-70 junction, 24 miles southwest of Richfield. San Rafael Swell For years the San Rafael Swell has been considered one of the "undiscovered" natural wonders of the American West. Eons ago, tremendous geologic upheavals formed a giant dome of rock - a "swell" in the earth's surface. The

harsh elements beat against this dome and eroded it into a wild, broken array of multi-colored sandstone. Wind and water carved this jumble of rock into incredible formations as buttes, canyons, pinnacles and mesas emerged, making the Swell one of the most ruggedly beautiful pockets of terrain in the world. Hiking possibilities here range from easy to strenuous- technical canyoneering. It's in central/ eastern Utah, and is split in half by Interstate 70. Buckskin Gulch One of the truly classic hiking trails in the United States, let alone the world, Buckskin Gulch swerves through a subterranean paradise for the senses. Attempt this visuallyarresting walk as a day trip, or walk the entire 20 miles over the course of four days. It is the longest and deepest slot canyon in the Southwest and offers obstacles like rock jams, pools, quicksand, and the potential for flash floods. Yet a day hike option via Wire Pass Trail is moderately easy, and should be a must-do tour on any hiker's list. With stone so deep it’s a challenge to see blue skies in places, this hike will be something that you remember forever. It is located in the Grand Staircase-Escalante National Monument near Kanab, Utah.
