Mayor’s Message F

ifteen years ago I sat in a city council meeting and listened as the mayor read his “Family Week Proclamation.” I was surprised, but mostly impressed. To hear a mayor proclaim the celebration of the family in a city meeting typically filled with budgetary debate, code discussion and legislative jargon seemed unordinary. I quickly realized that this discussion was about our heritage, our strength and our culture. In the mid 1800’s, pioneer families were forming settlements in our area. Life was difficult because everything needed to be established. These were family groups that depended on each other for their survival and progress. Through their combined effort they found success and in 1852, the area formally known as Sulphur Springs, Dry Creek, and Evansville was incorporated as Lehi City.

are excited to have your participation. You are now our current “Pioneers.” Please help in shaping what our future will be! As I sat in that council meeting in 2003, I never would have anticipated that I would have the opportunity to read and sign a new proclamation regarding our Family Week of 2018. It was an honor and I hope you look forward to this event as a great opportunity as well. Respectfully Mark Johnson, Lehi City Mayor

The Strength of a Community is in its

Family heritage remains strong and it is always easy to find someone willing to tell you about their ties to those early pioneers. One thing will always remain clear, we would not have become the community we are today without families who understood the strength and importance of that relationship. It is my hope that everyone will find an interest in our “Lehi Family Week.” Let’s celebrate together this important event. It does not matter if you have ties to the original founders, have just found your way here as a new resident or if you are a family of one, there is something here for you. We welcome you and

Message from the Chair I

n August we celebrated my Mom's 90th birthday! We had over 120 friends join in the celebration as we honored her life sharing stories of her kindness, bringing them meals, having them over for dinner, teaching them how to bake artisan bread, singing in our church choir, helping them with their genealogy, and many other stories. They were tender and heart-felt, filled with gratitude for the love they felt and still feel for her. Several friends sang her favorite songs and after we all ate, we had a "sing-a-long" - "Climb Every Mountain", "When You Wish Upon a Star", "I Could Have Danced All Night" and "The Hills Are Alive With the Sound of Music". It was so powerful for me, her daughter, to witness her profound influence in their lives - she loved them, wrote cards on their birthday, hugged them and listened to them unload their challenges. She always had a smile on her face and welcomed each person with a hug making them feel cherished. I can honestly say I have been so blessed to have been raised by loving parents who taught me how to work hard and serve others! They lived by example what they taught in our home growing up in Pennsylvania. I remember how giving and inviting my parents were and how they always included everyone. Those memories have shaped who I am today and have helped me to recognize the joy of family life! We weren't perfect and we missed "the mark" many times - but we tried. I hope as you gather together as family and friends this Thanksgiving, that you will reflect and ponder how immensely blessed you are

The Miller Family and make an effort to lift and love those around you! And may you live to hear your family and friends share their stories of love and friendship about you! Heather Miller Lehi Family Week Chair

The Nielsen Family Hard Work Builds Community

W

ith 8 children in the family, there was always a lot of work to do at the Nielsen home and always a lot of hands to lighten the load. “With a family this size, it’s been exciting,” said mother, Marilyn Nielsen. There was always lots to do and be involved with. The child of a Lehi dairy farmer, Marilyn learned the value of hard work at a young age and taught her children through example. She excelled in her studies at Lehi High School and went to work at the State Bank of Lehi after graduation in 1954. She married her sweetheart, Don, after he returned from an LDS mission in the Swiss Austrian area in 1959. As children came, Don taught high school and Marilyn and the children worked delivering newspapers. Marilyn worked folding the papers and getting them out to the carriers and the kids had paper routes and delivered papers to most of Lehi. “We taught them how to work and they’ve all been good workers. That’s something I’ve been very grateful for,” Marilyn said. When Don died suddenly of a heart attack in 1990, the Nielsen family pulled together as the children and Marilyn needed to take on additional responsibilities. “He was a wonderful man,”

Marilyn said of her husband. “Every day he told me he loved me.” Music has also been a big part of the Nielsen household. “When words fail, music speaks,” Marilyn said. Don and Marilyn Nielsen When she was a young child, Marilyn’s mother and brother worked and saved to buy a piano so her brother could take lessons. “I’ll never forget when the piano came through the front door. Oh, I was excited,” she said. It turned out Marilyn had a natural ability to play by ear. Her mother later wrote, “I think we bought the piano for the wrong member of the family.” Marilyn has accompanied hundreds of people singing solos and she plays in the church choir and in Relief Society. Over the years, the Nielsen’s hard work has strengthened the

The Nielsen Family Lehi community. Marilyn worked for many years as the director at the Lehi Seniors Center. Now at age 82, she still runs a singing class for special needs students on Wednesdays at the Senior Center. “We sing together and have a good time,” she said. Marilyn and her brother, Melvin Anderson, worked with the Lehi Historical Society to have the statue of David Evans placed in front of the Lehi Legacy Center. They also were instrumental in getting a pioneer cabin restored and moved to a new home at the Hutchings Museum. The last time the Nielsen family was all together was a couple of years ago when Marilyn turned 80. With children, grandchildren, and great-grandchildren, the family is now approaching 130 members.

The Caldwell Family Connection and Confidence

C

lementine Farms, west of the rodeo grounds, has been a fixture in Lehi for the last 23 years. Lee and Jamie Caldwell moved to Lehi to raise their family and have space for their horses. They and their 7 children have been a strength the community since then.

Stillwater Academy uses equine-assisted therapy to help teens gain confidence and make connections. “Horses can be really healing to people who have problems with relationships and connections,” Lee said. “Horses provide a great metaphor for relationships.”

The Caldwell’s love of horses has led to them being a great support for the youth of Lehi. They have been heavily involved in rodeo at all levels. “ From pee wee, to junior, to High School, to PRCA, it’s been a blessing to our family,” said Lee. The Caldwells have also been volunteering for Round-Up Days for the last 20 years.

Lee described horses as forgiving, honest, and reflective of the emotion they feel from the people they are around. “Horses give us an opportunity in a safe predictable way to have a relationship. As we learn to create that relationship with an animal, we can learn to create that with people,” he said.

Though the Caldwell’s have found success in the rodeo arena, Lee said the most important part is that the kids have learned really important principals like hard work and helping others. “Being together and working for a commoon cause is more important than winning at the rodeo,” Lee said. The family also has to work together and support each other as Lee and Jamie run a school for struggling teens called Stillwater Academy. The school serves students who have experienced traumatic life and family events. It helps them learn responsibility for their choices and actions and make better decisions.

Lee says that is also one of the main purposes of families and what a strong family can provide. “Family is safe and predictable and supporting,” he said. “That’s what creates confidence and stability to go out and do things in the world.” The Caldwell’s have unofficially adoped two other children to thier family, Lee and Jamie have tried to give them all a sense of confidence, purpose, and direction. “We’ve raised them in an environment where they’ve learned confidence. It’s really important to be confident in being able to make decisions and accomplish things and see the benefit of hard work and the benefit of connecting with friends and family,” he said.

Jamie said a strong husband and wife relationship is the foundation of a strong family. Though she claims she and Lee are polar opposites, they’ve learned to connect, have fun, and find humor in their differences. Their children have lots of diverse interests as well, and the family has learned to accept and enjoy differences. Only 2 of the 7 Caldwell children are still at home. Both of the youngest girls attend Lehi High School. The Caldwell’s oldest son continues in the horse business, helping to run Clementine Farms. Jobs and schooling have taken the other children to different places, but they still continue to help and count on each other. Jamie said, “We’re a happy family and we’re an accomplished family. We owe all that we have and are to the Gospel of Jesus Christ. With all that we do we try to make it the center of our lives.” She wants people to know they’re not perfect. As parents, they’ve made a lot

live your lifestyle, you love and accept and seek for understanding. We believe that family is divine and is stronger than any challenge that we can go through,” she said.

Nancy Weitzel Community Is Family

N

ancy Weitzel has thousands of kids. As manager of Lehi’s Rippy Literacy Center, Weitzel has touched the lives of all of the children who’ve come through the door in the last 13 years. She has adopted families all over Lehi. They invite her to dinner, to see their plays and concerts, and on family outings. She goes and finds joy in being with Lehi’s families. Nancy’s own four boys live all over the world. She and her husband moved 17 times while they were raising their family. When her husband died 18 years ago, Nancy came home to Lehi where she was born. “It’s fun for me to see the old and have so many good memories and to also see the new coming up and see the new generation,” Nancy said. Nancy feels like, despite the growth and changes, Lehi is still a good place for families. “Lehi has to be the best community,” she said. “We try to keep the hometown small feeling.” Nancy said every summer she would bring her boys home to Lehi during Round-Up Days. They enjoyed the many activities, including breakfast in the park. “The boys would go around telling friends that people in Lehi eat breakfast in the park together every Saturday.” It took a while for them to realize it was just

part of the Round-Up celebration. Nancy loves her work at the literacy center. “It’s the magic of seeing a child realize the’re reading. My biggest goal is to help them love to read,” she said. Nancy Weitzel Nancy often has known parents of the students, as well. The father of one of the students was a friend of her son’s growing up. “It’s fun to see the new generations,” she said. Nancy also knew Hester Rippy, the literacy center’s founder. “My heart is here at the literacy center, carrying on Hester’s legacy,” she said. Students at the literacy center often come back later on to become tutors. For Nancy, that’s one ofthe best parts of the job. “It’s the satisfaction of seeing the student become the teacher,” she said. The Rippy Literacy Center offers free tutoring services for reading and math to all Lehi students.

Family-friendly Business of the Year G

etting square doughnuts from Lehi’s oldest bakery is a Saturday morning tradition for many Lehi families. Family has always been an important part of the business plan for Lehi Bakery. Fifty years ago, Arden Tuckett decided he wanted to spend more time with his family and take his kids to church on Sundays. So, he left his job as a baker for Albertson’s grocery chain and opened the bakery on Main Street. It has been a fixture in Lehi life ever since. Arden and his wife Cheryle have 7 kids. Running the bakery was a family endeavor. Four generations of Tucketts have now worked in the family business. Brent Tuckett and his wife Valerie took over the bakery over 30 years ago from his parents and all of their 5 children have worked there. “We’ve had grandkids come in and help out as well,” Valerie said. The shop, located at 172 West Main Street, is popular for its old-fashioned cinnamon rolls, doughnuts, and pastries. “It’s really cute to see on Saturday mornings fathers bringing their kids in wearing their jammies to get a doughnut,” said Valerie Getting pies and rolls for the holidays is also a family tradition. Loyal customers come back year after year to get their favorite holiday sweets and rolls from Lehi Bakery Valerie said people often stop by who live elsewhere in the country who grew up in Lehi and are visiting home. “People from all over the place will stop in when they’re around,” Valerie

Lehi Bakery’s famous square doughnuts said. “They’ll say they’re leaving today and have to take something back.”

Keynote Speaker: Emily Freeman Love Boldly

B

estselling LDS author and motivational speaker Emily Belle Freeman spends her days “watching over teenagers, her flock of pampered chickens, and a rabbit that she adores.” She is the author of several books including one of her latest, Even this: Getting to the Place Where You Can Trust God With Anything. Emily looks for miracles in the ordinary moments in life. She has written, “There is nothing [she] enjoys more for breakfast than a bowl of coconut ice cream, raspberries, and chocolate chips.” Other favorites include parades, vacations, firework displays, and going for a long walk with a good friend.

Emily and her husband Greg live in Lehi. They have 5 kids and two grandkids. The family does a lot of traveling and have taken tours to Israel and LDS church history sites. With husband, Greg as a lacrosse coach, and son Garrett Bolles, a player for the Denver Broncos, the family is, of course, huge sports fans. Emily and Greg welcomed Garrett into their home when he was struggling as a teen and had nowhere to go. It has not only positively changed Garrett’s life, but the whole Freeman family. Emily believes reaching out to include others and “loving boldly” is a key to building a vibrant family and, in turn, a better community. She said, “Families are the strength of every

community. Whatever we can do to build the family will strengthen a community.” Emily finds great joy in studying and writing about the life and teachings of Jesus Christ. She has become part of an interfaith community Emily Freeman that builds bridges for people of all different faiths and traditions. She is on the executive board of The Small Seed, an interfaith ministry that seeks to empower women worldwide to “build friendships with women of all faiths, and access tools for a faith-filled life.” Emily is a popular speaker at Deseret Book’s Time Out For Women programs and has addressed groups all over the world. She has taught for many years in the church education system for The Church of Jesus Christ of Latter Day Saints. She also has had the opportunity to direct tours to Mexico , Israel and The Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-Day Saints church history sites as a guest educator. with tour groups. “M

usic speaks in a way words can’t sometimes,” said Monica Bennett, director of the 2018 Lehi Family Week Choir. She believes people can emotionally connect through music and so it is an important part of the Family Week celebration.

This year’s choir brings together vocalists of all ages and experiences. Monica says the goal of the choir is to share joy and bring light to others. To this end, they will be performing “This Little Light of Mine” and “Christ the Apple Tree.” “It’s important to remember where light and happiness come from,” Monica said.

Youth Prelude Performers S

isters Halle and Leah Barlow will be playing prelude music for the Lehi Family Week Kick-off Celebration. Both are accomplished musicians with a love for service. Leah, age 13, has been playing the piano for 6 years. She also participates in her school’s Bell Choir, and singing group Bella Voce. Breakfast & Pictures With Santa L

ehi Family Week is excited to partner once again with Title Sponsor Mountain Point Medical Center for one of the best traditions to hit the community! On Tuesday, November 20, Jolly ol' Saint Nick will be making an early visit to Lehi for our Breakfast with Santa event! Bring your entire family and enjoy breakfast for dinner! This event is FREE – all we ask is that each family that attends bring 2 cans of food to be donated to the food bank for the holiday season. Once you've finished with your meal, stick around for some great holiday activities including Story Time with Mrs. Claus! The Head Elf himself will be there too, ready to take pictures with all the kids. In fact, each family will receive a FREE printed picture taken with Santa. This event is the perfect activity for you and your family to kick off the holiday season...entertainment for the kids, no cooking for mom and dad, free Santa pictures – it’s a hassle-free evening of family fun. Family & Friends Square Dance W

e are excited this year to have Tami Gear as caller for Lehi Family Week’s Family and Friends Square Dance November 24 at the Legacy Center. Tami first took square dance lessons when she was nine and learned to love it. Her family belonged to a club and she attended dances with her parents and 2 brothers. She enjoyed the time that they spent together as a family in a fun activity. Tami began dancing with a teen square dance club at the age of 17 and picked up a microphone for the first time and fell in love with it. She currently dances with her husband every chance they can and calls and teaches square dance lessons in Midway for a club on Friday nights, and travels to other states calling square dances. Her hope is that one day families will learn to reconnect with this fun inexpensive activity that they can all enjoy.

Come join the fun... Where: Legacy Center 123 N Center St., Lehi When: Nov. 24, 6-8 pm
