Mayor’s Message On behalf of the Santaquin City Council and the Office of the Mayor, I would like to welcome our citizens, friends and neighbors to this year’s Orchard Days celebration. We have many wonderful events scheduled with all ages and interests in mind. The activities will start on July 29 with a wonderful flagraising ceremony followed by the entertaining Buck-A-Roo Rodeo. Throughout the week we have daily events that you do not want to miss. As always, the week of Orchard Days will be wrapped up with the Grand Parade and the award-winning RMPRA Rodeo that just gets bigger and better every year. I want to thank this year’s Orchard Days chair Amy Johnson and our rodeo chair Paige Steele and all of the many volunteers from throughout our community that have planned this great Orchard Days event. With that said, none of these great events could have been made possible without the financial support of our many Orchard Days sponsors. I would like to personally thank each and every sponsor and volunteer that worked to support this year’s Orchard Days Event. We are so excited for the Orchard Days kickoff and we hope that you will join with us as we celebrate Santaquin during our 2017 Orchard Days. Sincerely, Mayor Kirk Hunsaker

RMPRA Rodeo Committee Message The Santaquin Rodeo Committee would like to welcome you all to our award-winning Rocky Mountain Professional Rodeo Association Orchard Days Rodeo this year. Come and enjoy a live band - Santaquin’s own Fire Hawk Country Band - as well as rodeo action, good food and fireworks in our hometown arena. We have worked hard to bring you the top cowboys and cowgirls along with famous stock contractor Circle J Rodeo. Back by popular demand is the famous hide race and donkey steer roping, which will be held both nights this year. Get your team and sign up as space is limited! Funnyman Van Kelley is back again for some good laughs and entertainment. There will be fireworks after the rodeo on both nights, with the best seats for viewing the fireworks being inside the arena. Saturday night is “Tough Enough to Wear Pink” night. We encourage everyone to wear pink! We as a committee want to thank Mayor Hunsaker and the Santaquin City Council for the support they give so we can provide this great rodeo every year. It also wouldn’t be possible without the many volunteers that are willing to help us!

Parade Grand Marshals Bart and Yvonne Olson

Santaquin residents Bart and Yvonne Olson have been named grand marshals of the 2017 Orchard Days Grand Parade. The parade will begin at 10 a.m. on Saturday, Aug. 5, and travel down Main Street from 400 East to 200 West. Bart Olson was born and raised in Santaquin, graduating from Payson High School. His wife, Yvonne, is from Payson. Married in 1977, they are looking forward to celebrating their 40th anniversary this year. The couple has five children - Rachelle Lloyd, Chad Olson, Summer Swenson, Bobby Jo Barker and Brandon Olson - as well as 19 grandchildren and two great-grandchildren. Bart Olson serves as president and leader of Olson’s Greenhouse Gardens, a business started in Santaquin by his grandfather Roy Olson in 1943. What Roy started as a hobby threequarters of a century ago has become a thriving wholesale greenhouse and leader in the nursery

and bedding plant industry. Olson’s is a top 10 greenhouse nationally with approximately 74 acres under environmentally controlled greenhouse space and 45 acres of field production. Its focus is the propagation, growing and wholesaling of annuals, perennials, mums and poinsettias. The business has six facilities in three different states - Utah, Idaho and Colorado - and sells its products in 11 different states to large retailers including Walmart, Home Depot, Costco and Sam’s Club. Although Olson’s is one of the primary suppliers of bedding plants through the Mountain Time Zone, it has goals to become the undisputed supplier and leader in its geographic footprint. Bart and Yvonne Olson are actively involved in the business and have been the foundation upon which the significant growth of the past two decades has occurred. All of their children are also involved in running the business. Chad

Parade Grand Marshals Olson oversees the Utah operation of Olson’s Greenhouse Gardens while Brandon Olson oversees operations in Colorado. Summer Swenson and her husband Cody Swenson run the Olson’s Boise, Idaho, location. Rachelle Lloyd’s husband Brian Lloyd is over sales and marketing for Olson’s and Bobby Jo Barker’s husband Nate Barker is over purchasing for the company. The main office for Olson’s Greenhouse Gardens is located in Salem, but one of the business’s greenhouse locations is in Santaquin. Olson’s is consistently recognized by its customers as the best of the best in providing top-quality products in a professional and efficient manner. Olson’s is often singled out and recognized by its customers for its quality among trade groups and other suppliers. Olson’s prides itself on the fact that it also has a good working relationship with many of its competitors throughout the country. As a result of these relationships, Olson’s is often provided with opportunities that may not otherwise be presented.

Bart and Yvonne Olson Olson’s continues to employ individuals who share its core values of spirituality and faith, family and teamwork, growth and learning, honesty and integrity, and stewardship in its effort to achieve its core purpose of playing an important role in the well-being of peoples’ lives … which is exactly the way Roy Olson did it himself over three-quarters of a century ago.

From Walt Disney Animation Studios comes “Moana,” a sweeping CG-animated feature film about an adventurous teenager who is inspired to leave the safety of her people. Inexplicably drawn to the ocean, Moana (voice of Auli’i Cravalho) convinces the might demigod Maui (voice of Dwayne Johnson) to join her mission, and he reluctantly helps her become a wayfinder like her ancestors who sailed before her. Together, they voyage across the open ocean on an action-packed adventure. Along the way,

He currently performs more than 60 shows per year. If you haven’t seen one of the Hypno Hick’s comedy shows, don’t miss out. His shows are family-friendly and super hilarious; you will laugh till your boots fall off. Dee became a certified hypnotherapist in March of 2003. His love for hypnosis came during high school when he was in a psychology class. The thought of helping ordinary people with ordinary issues sparked his interest, and that is the route he chose. In 2014, he became a certified instructor for the largest hypnosis organization in the world, the National Guild of

Also in 2014, he became certified in treating PTSD with hypnosis and in 2016 became certified in forensics hypnosis to work with police departments in assisting witnesses and victims with in memory recall as to what a license plate might have been or what a suspect may look like. Hypnosis is a very power-

ful tool in memory recall. Dee’s greatest passion is with sports hypnosis. He helps get his clients’ mind into the game whether its rodeo, gymnastics, soccer, wrestling, bodybuilding, softball or other sports. Cherry Pit Spit SATURDAY, AUGUST 5

Qualifying Round: 10 a.m. to 2 p.m. Championship Round: 2 to 3 p.m. Place: Rowley’s Red Barn, 900 S. 300 West Cost: $1 per participant Celebrate summer and Orchard Days at Rowley’s Red Barn in Santaquin by participating in the annual Cherry Pit Spit event. Come enjoy an afternoon of family fun and prizes and spit your pit to see how far you can make it fly. The cost to spit is only $1, and the Red Barn donates 100 percent of the proceeds from this event to a local charity or cause. Also, get some delicious ice cream while you’re there as the barn also donates all the profit from the day’s ice cream sales. The procedure is simple: competitors are given a cherry and, after eating the fruit, they spit the pit as far as they can. The Red Barn creates a special spitting court outside of the barn where the spits can be measured for length. The qualifying round will be held from 10 a.m. to 2 p.m. Those wishing to compete can show up at any time during the qualifying round to spit their pit. Those making the Championship Round, however, will need to be at the barn at 2 p.m. to compete for the top spot. As each competitor completes his or her spit, the result will be logged in the competitor’s category. There are three categories for children: age 5 and under, ages 6 to 8 and ages 9 to 12. There will also be a women’s category and a men’s category. The top 10 spitters in the men’s and women’s categories and the top five spitters in the youth age groups will compete in the Championship Round. The Championship Round will be held at 2 p.m. There will also be exhibition round featuring celebrity competitors such as the mayor and city royalty. Competition rules include the following: - No foreign objects may be held in the mouth which would give an advantage in spitting the pit. 46 - Santaquin Orchard Days 2017 • www.santaquin.org

- The contestant’s foul line will be determined on a handicap basis according to height in order to remove any advantage to taller contestants. - Contestants must select three cherries from the regulation variety (Montmorency) supplied by the tournament committee. - Each cherry must be inserted in the mouth whole, with all soluble solids eaten prior to the spitting of the pit. - Each contestant must spit his/her pit within 60 seconds of the time he/she is called to the line by the tournament judge. Three spits are allowed. The longest of the three is recorded. If a pit is swallowed, that spit is forfeited. - Contestants’ hands must remain below the shoulders (to avoid popping one’s cheeks). - Spitters must stand flat on the ground - or ground level platform - to spit. Spitters are prohibited from using any kind of mechanical or other device to improve body thrust or spit length (including hydraulic hoists, wall support, etc.).

Bond serving as new Community Development Director of Santaquin Jason Bond may be new to Santaquin City government, but his history with the city goes back to its beginning - he is a direct descendant of Benjamin Franklin Johnson, who helped settle Santaquin. Bond began his work as Santaquin’s new Community Development Director on June 26, a job that will have him planning for the city’s future just as his ancestor did in the mid-1800s. “I’m thrilled to be here in Santaquin and be a part of helping this community to be the best that it can be,” Bond said. Bond grew up in Pleasant Grove, graduating from Pleasant Grove High School. He later attended the University of Utah where he earned his bachelor’s degree in urban planning. Originally, his intent was to major in architecture, but that didn’t seem like the right choice for him at the time. With the country struggling through the recent recession, Bond decided to refocus his studies on city planning, a field that seemed like a more stable career option. “There are similarities between the two professions,” he said. “Architects plan how buildings will look and operate, while city planners do the same for entire communities.” After obtaining his degree, Bond was hired as the city planner for Alpine City. He worked with a very small staff, which presented a lot of opportunities for him to quickly learn the intricacies of local government. “I was kind of thrown into the fire right out of college,” he said. “It pushed me to learn the job quickly.” Santaquin is a very different city than Alpine; for example, Alpine is tucked into a quiet corner of northern Utah County while Santaquin has I-15 running through the middle of it. The differences will provide him with new challenges, but they will also offer new opportunities to learn and grow. “There’s a lot to learn and get accustomed to, but I am up for the challenge,” he said. Bond said he believes the major planning issue currently facing Santaquin is growth. “I

Jason Bond think there’s a lot of room for growth in Santaquin and the challenge is going to be managing that growth,” he said. “Managing the community’s growth will include keeping the community’s rural heritage in mind while ensuring that development happens in the best way possible.” The growth and opportunities in Santaquin are some of the reasons the job here was appealing to Bond. Also, his wife McKell Robbins Bond grew up in Santaquin and the couple currently lives in the city with their 5-month-old daughter, McKenna. One issue he knows residents are interested in is seeing a grocery store locate in Santaquin. A company is looking at placing a grocery store on property near the Main Street and I-15 interchange, and Bond said he is eager to help it happen. “I’m interested in working with the developer to come up with the best development possible,” he said. www.santaquin.org • Santaquin Orchard Days 2017 - 51
