Mayor ’s Welcome Welcome Santaquin citizens, friends and neighbors to this year’s Orchard Days celebration! The city council and I are excited to invite you to take part in the many wonderful events scheduled throughout this week. Don’t miss our Little Buck-A-Roo Rodeo, which is a community favorite and gets bigger every year. Throughout the week, we have a Family Night with a Movie in the Park as well as a Quilt Show, races, parades, contests, sporting events and fireworks! Then, end the week with the amazing Orchard Days Rodeo, which has been named “Rodeo of the Year” for eight years by the Rocky Mountain Professional Rodeo Association. There is truly

something for everyone to come and enjoy. Many, many people have pulled together to make this event a success. We especially thank our Parks and Recreation Director Amy Johnson, her staff and all of the volunteers from across the city who have worked so hard to get everything ready. We acknowledge that none of this would be possible without the financial support of our many sponsors, for whom we are enormously grateful. We look forward to seeing all of our hometown friends and neighbors as we celebrate Santaquin during our 2018 Orchard Days. Santaquin Mayor Kirk Hunsaker

Grand Marshals

Parade Grand Marshals: Carl and Marie Durney

Santaquin residents Carl and Marie Durney have been chosen to serve as the grand marshals of the 2018 Orchard Days Grand Parade. The parade will begin at 10 a.m. on Saturday, Aug. 4, and travel down Santaquin’s Main Street from 400 East to 200 West. The Durneys have lived in Santaquin for nearly 20 years, having moved to the city after Carl retired from a career as a professor at the University of Utah. “It’s a great community, good people,” Carl said. “We like the small-town environment and the location is great for us. It’s been a great place to retire.” Carl grew up in Blackfoot, Idaho, graduating from high school in 1949 and joining the U.S. Air Force in 1950. He served for a year in Korea during the Korean War, then returned home for a 30-day leave before traveling to a new assignment at Lake Charles Air Force Base in Louisiana. Just three days before his leave ended, he met Marie on a blind date. Marie grew up in Price, graduating from high school there in 1952. Her brother was working for the Atomic Energy Commission in Arco, Idaho, and Marie moved

there to live with him and also work at the AEC. She’d been there about a year before the fateful blind date. Carl left for Louisiana, and the two wrote letters back and forth during his six-month absence. When he returned to Idaho for another leave, the couple got engaged. Carl then spent another six months in Louisiana

Grand Marshals before traveling back to Idaho and marrying Marie. The couple spent the first months of their marriage in Louisiana before Carl was discharged from the Air Force. He then spent nine years at various universities, eventually earning a Ph.D. degree in electrical engineering from the University of Utah. Carl was offered a job at the U of U and he spent 34 years there teaching and researching as a professor of both electrical engineering and bioengineering. He and Marie settled in Holladay. Marie was a stay-at-home mom and raised the couple’s three daughters and three sons. When their youngest child was in junior high school, Marie decided to go back to school, eventually earning a bachelor’s degree in psychology and speech communication and a master’s degree in social work. Because Marie attended the U of U, the couple could often be found together in Carl’s campus office with Carl working and Marie doing homework. After receiving her college degrees, Marie worked for Granite School District and Salt Lake County Youth Services helping truant youth. After several years, she went to work for the VA Medical Center in Salt Lake City. For about 10 years, she ran a Parkinson’s disease support

group on a volunteer basis. Upon retiring, the couple built a home in Santaquin and have lived there ever since. Marie served as chair of Santaquin’s Orchard Days celebration one year and was also named the 2016 Santaquin Citizen of the Year. Carl spent two years serving on the Santaquin Planning Commission. Marie was attending activities at the Santaquin Senior Citizens Center when the job as director of the center opened up. She took the job and spent about seven years overseeing the center’s staff and its various activities, including the weekly luncheons where seniors enjoy entertainment and a hot meal. She also worked with the mayor of Santaquin to create a yearly day honoring local seniors called the Senior Citizens Day of Affirmation. Carl supported Marie in her job at the senior center through helping with technical aspects such as setting up computers for the seniors to use. Marie retired from her position at the center in November of 2016. In addition to their six children, the Durneys now have 26 grandchildren and 29 great-grandchildren.

History of Santaquin Santaquin is located in Utah County about 70 miles south of Salt Lake City in a picturesque and beautiful site with a view of Utah Lake and Mount Timpanogos to the north. Originally called Summit City because of its location at the summit dividing line between the Utah and Juab valleys, it was settled in late 1851 by pioneers who were helping settle Payson, a town located about six miles to the north. Abundant water, plenty of fertile land for farming, and abundant groves of trees for firewood, fence posts and cabin logs made this an ideal place for a community. A friendship developed between local Indian chief Guffich and Benjamin F. Johnson, leader of the original pioneers, which enabled the whites

to settle peacefully in the area. By 1853 the settlement had grown sufficiently to become known as Summit Creek Precinct No. 7. Soon after, however, the Walker War broke out, and the settlers were forced to move for safety to Payson, where they remained until 1855. Around this time a fort was built according to plans furnished by architect Truman O. Angell. After its completion, the settlers moved back to the town in the spring of 1856. One night soon after resettlement Chief Guffich came secretly to warn Johnson of an impending raid by young braves, including his son Santaquin. The settlers quickly left, and when the raiders found the fort deserted Chief Guffich explained to them that the white men were good people and that the Great Spirit had warned them of the attack. It was

claimed that from that day peace was made between the local Indians and the Mormon pioneers. It was decided to name the town after Guffich, but he declined the honor and asked that the settlement be named “Santaquin” for his son. A rock schoolhouse was built in the fort in 1856. It was stoutly built and served the public for many years. It was still being used into the 1980s. It was not until 1896 that the first local church building was constructed, religious meetings having been conducted in the school building, which now serves as a senior citizens’ center and a veterans’ memorial hall. In addition to farming, early industries included sawmills, a flour mill, a molasses mill and a furniture shop. A silk industry was started with the planting of mulberry trees, some of which still remain in the city. Horse and buggy were the only means of transportation available until 1875, at which time the Utah Southern Railroad completed a line to Santaquin. About that time, rich ore was discovered in the Tintic area. Several mines were discovered on Santaquin ridge, or Dry Mountain, with some copper, lead, silver and zinc being mined; the Union Chief mine was the most prosperous. With the construction of the steel plant at Geneva and the rapid growth in the Provo-Orem area to the north, many fruit farmers relocated to the Santaquin area. Large orchards were planted, replacing wheat fields and pasture land. The construction of huge cold storage facilities for the fruit created many jobs in the community. Another boast to the economy and population came in 1968 with the completion of Interstate 15 through the town. (Source: Myron V. Olson, compiler, “Give Me This Mountain, A History of the Santaquin Utah Stake,” 1984.)

Opening Ceremony & Flag Raising SATURDAY, JULY 28

Time: 9 a.m. Place: Santaquin Rodeo Grounds, 200 S. 400 West Cost: FREE Santaquin’s mayor and city council will host a flagraising ceremony on Saturday, July 28, that will serve as the official opening ceremony of the 2018 Orchard Days celebration. Each year, the council chooses an individual who influenced the community during their life. This year they have chosen to recognize the late Jack Olson with a balloon release. The ceremony will begin at 9 a.m. at the new flagpole located at the rodeo grounds. All are invited to attend. Olson’s Garden Shoppe Inc. has its origins in Santaquin. Originally called Olson’s Nursery, Roy Olson started the business in 1942. He began by growing bedding plants as a hobby after work. In 1963, Roy’s son Jack built several greenhouses and began to concentrate on growing tomatoes year-round and bedding plants in the spring. In 1970, Roy retired and sold the business to his son

Jack Olson and Jack’s wife Nola Rae. Four greenhouses were constructed, adding an additional 15,000 square feet of much-needed growing space. By 1977, the Olsons were out of the hothouse tomato business and were concentrating exclusively on bedding plants and poinsettias. Jack and Nola Rae’s three sons, Brad, Bart and Don, involved themselves in the business, and by 1980 plants were being sold to several of the large garden centers and home center chains. However, most of their plants were still being sold to independent buyers in southern Utah. Olson’s expanded again by constructing another 50,000 square feet of greenhouse space, establishing them as one of the major bedding plant operations in Utah. Shaun Dee, the Hypno Hick, has been providing comedy stage hypnosis for fairs, schools, corporate events/ parties and fundraisers since October of 2003. He has hypnotized thousands of volunteers on stage as well as one-on-one clients in his hypnosis clinic called the Alpine Hypnosis Center in Provo, Utah. Shaun became a Certified Hypnotherapist in March of 2003. His love for hypnosis came during high school when he was in psychology class. The thought of helping ordinary people with ordinary issues sparked his interest, and that is the route he chose. In

2014, he became a certified instructor for one of the largest hypnosis organizations in the world, the National Guild of Hypnotists. Also in 2014, he became certified in treating PTSD with hypnosis and in 2016 became certified in forensics hypnosis to work with police departments to assist in memory recall for witnesses and victims as to what a licence plate might have been or a suspect may look like. Hypnosis is a very powerful tool in memory recall. Shaun’s passion is with sports hypnosis. He helps get your mind into the game, whether its rodeo, gymnastics, soccer, wrestling, bodybuilding or Softball. Your sport is 80 percent

mental and 20 percent physical, and hypnosis can help with the 80 percent. If you haven’t seen his show yet, you are missing out. It is a very professional and family-friendly comedy hypnosis show.

Rules for the Cherry Pit Spit are as follows: - All contestants must register in qualifying court prior to spitting, unless spitter is awarded a special exemption by the official tournament judge. determined on a handicap basis according to height, in order to remove any advantage to taller contestants. The handicap will consist of a twoinch (50.8 mm) withdrawal from the base foul line for each one-inch (25.4 mm) of contestant height over four feet (1.21 m). Any contestant four feet tall or less will stand at the base foul line.
