Chamber President’s Message Our community has its own unique character and charm. Likewise, our chamber of commerce is special. Our members want to make a difference, and it shows in the commitment they give to our community. They donate time, financial support and talents to make Spanish Fork and Salem a better place to live. I joined our chamber of commerce three years ago when I opened my business on Main Street. Our chamber membership has given me and my business a valuable tool with which to network and to learn. It’s a great way to build relationships with other business owners, community leaders and residents. The benefits and support my business has received from being a member is worth so much more than just the membership fee we pay. I love that our chamber is heavily involved in serving and strengthening our community. I believe a strong and healthy community means a strong consumer base. When we joined the chamber, we wanted to get the most from our membership, so we strived to become fully involved. There are monthly Networking Luncheons, Business of the Month celebrations, Ribbon Cuttings for new members and so much more. Our chamber provides many ways we can give back to our community. Our members generously donate their personal time and financial resources to events year-round. There is the Easter Egg Hunt, Winter

Executive Director’s Message I grew up in Salem in a time when Spanish Fork was “Town.” If you wanted to do anything fun and exciting, you had to beg your parents to take you to town. Movie? There was an amazing one on Main Street where you could meet up with all of your friends, and after, you would walk down to Barry’s, order some fries, and call your mom to come and pick you up. And when you got older, you had to travel all the way into Spanish Fork to go to middle school/junior high as there was only one high school in all of Spanish Fork and Salem. If you wanted to go on a nice date, you had to drive the extra miles into the big city of Provo to find a nice sit-down restaurant. My, how times have changed! We have watched Salem and Spanish Fork blossom into a sprawling metropolis. My brother Brett has been in the Navy for most of his life. Brett and his family have been fortunate enough to have lived all over the United States and even in Italy. Each time he comes home to Spanish Fork for a visit, he always remarks about how much the area has changed, yet it still feels like home. We have seen the addition of a new 8-screen Cinemark theater to town while the old movie theater of my youth has preserved its history and been remodeled into a performing arts venue. We now have new places to take your date for dinner such as Olive Garden, or for a more casual
setting you could take your family to Chick-fil-A. Even Salem has seen its commerce blossom in just a few short years. While it doesn’t have quite as many amenities as Spanish Fork, you can find an amazing number of businesses and restaurants that have made Salem their home. There is no longer that trek into Spanish Fork for life’s little necessities. You can get all of your shopping done in our amazing community, anything from shoes, fabric, clothing or buying sundry items for your pets! I hope that you will consider choosing to “Shop Local” and support these amazing businesses that have chosen to call Spanish Fork and Salem home. 2017 Business of the Year: Nebo School District Members of the Spanish Fork Salem Area Chamber of Commerce voted to honor Nebo School District with the chamber’s 2017 Business of the Year Award. Nebo School District Community Relations Administrator Lana Hiskey accepted the award for the district at the chamber’s Installation & Awards Banquet held in January. “We are so grateful for this honor,” Hiskey said. “To be Business of the Year means so much to us. We live in an amazing community that is so generous with their time, talent and treasure. I have personally worked with the chamber board for the past 16 years and am truly amazed at all the good the Spanish Fork/Salem chamber does for our communities and promoting businesses here.” Hiskey emphasized that what the award really does is honor the district’s dedicated employees. “This award really highlights our many teachers and staff and all the good they’re doing as well as the leadership from our administrators,” she said. Nebo School District employs approximately 4,000 people and is the sixth-largest district in the state as well as the fifth-largest employer in Utah County. Nebo has more than 33,000 students attending 42 schools. Eighteen of those schools are located in the Spanish Fork and Salem communities. The district’s graduation rate of 90 percent is one of the
highest in the state. Nebo also saved parents and students more than $5.6 million during the past year by providing college concurrent enrollment classes and AP classes for college credit. Ninety-six percent of Nebo graduates took at least one of these college classes. “National research is clear, consistent and convincing,” said Nebo School District Superintendent Rick Nielsen. “The involvement of parents, families, communities and businesses in education correlates with higher academic performance and school betterment. Students tend to earn higher grades, attend school regularly, stay in school and enroll in higher-level courses.” Nebo district is known for emphasizing technology with more than 19,000 technological devices in its schools including computers, wireless Chromebooks and iPads. The businesses in the community and generous individuals have donated more than $200,000 to the Nebo Education Foundation, and these donations have helped fund this technology as well as musical instruments, books, calculators and other classroom needs. Hiskey emphasized the importance of community involvement in the district. “The chamber and businesses have been involved and generous in donating basic necessities for Nebo students in need. It may be a backpack of food for the weekend or a warm coat or shoes. Thank you to all those

2017 Business of the Year: Nebo School District who continue to give to the Nebo Pantry.” The Nebo Pantry is located at Landmark High School in Spanish Fork and contains donated items such as backpacks, food, coats, socks and other necessities. District principals can refer students in need to the pantry. Each year at Christmastime, the Spanish Fork Rotary Club and the Spanish Fork Salem Area Chamber of Commerce team up to conduct a “Giving Tree” event for the pantry through which Christmas trees are set up in local businesses with cards listing needed items. The public is encouraged to take the cards, purchase the items and donate them to the pantry. “We’re so grateful for the many businesses that support the pantry,” Hiskey said. “The reason our schools are so good is because of the support of the businesses.” Nebo School District is part of the chamber in order to
create relationships with local businesses. The district does a great deal of business with the local community, from purchasing gas for its 150 buses to buying food and building new structures. Just as important, however, is learning how the district can assist local businesses in educating their future employees. “Honestly, it’s our students that are going to be our future business leaders, so we think that’s important,” Hiskey said.

Annual Chamber-Suppored Events SCHOLARSHIP GOLF TOURNAMENT
Each year, the Spanish Fork Salem Area Chamber of Commerce joins with the Spanish Fork Rotary Club to sponsor a scholarship golf tournament at The Oaks at Spanish Fork golf course. Money raised through the tournament funds college scholarships in the amount of $1,500 per scholarship for students at local high schools. In 2017, the golf tournament raised enough to provide more than 20 students with scholarships. This year’s golf tournament will be held May 2. Students interested in applying to be considered for a scholarship should contact their school counselor
EASTER EGG HUNT
Thousands of children line up at the Spanish Fork Sports Park each spring for their chance to find eggs filled with candy and prizes as part of the Spanish Fork-Salem Area Chamber of Commerce Easter Egg Hunt. The event, which is held on the Saturday before Easter at 9 a.m., has become an annual tradition in Spanish Fork, with between 3,000 and 5,000 children ranging in age from infants to 10 years old participating each year.
HARVEST MOON HURRAH
Each September, the Spanish Fork Arts Council sponsors the city’s Harvest Moon Hurrah, an event celebrating the harvest season and the arts. Held in Spanish Fork’s Library Park at Center and Main streets, the Harvest Moon Hurrah includes harvest-related games, crafts and activities as well as live music performances.
SCARECROW CONTEST/MAIN STREET TRICK OR TREAT
Each October, the Spanish Fork Salem Area Chamber of Commerce sponsors the Scarecrow Contest, a competition encouraging local businesses and individuals to design their most creative scarecrow and put it up for display in the community. Through the contest, 20 to 30 scarecrows are set up along Spanish Fork’s Main Street in the area between Center Street and 400 North, adding fun decorations to the historic downtown area during the Halloween season. The chamber also sponsors the annual Main Street Trick or Treat event in Spanish Fork. Local businesses are invited to participate through handing out candy to trick-or-treaters during this event. Salem City hosts a similar event called the Trunk or Treat, which is held in a parking lot of the activity center and candy is passed out from the trunks of cars. 20 - Spanish Fork - Salem Area Chamber of Commerce 2018
WINTER LIGHTS PARADE
On the Friday evening after Thanksgiving each year, Main Street in Spanish Fork is lit up with festive floats and wagons as part of the Winter Lights Parade, an event sponsored annually by the Spanish Fork Salem Area Chamber of Commerce. Businesses, families and other groups participate in the parade each year, with the parade attracting entries such as hay wagons, city floats, horse riding clubs and marching bands. Musical groups also participate, including Christmas carolers, and the parade ends with a visit from Santa Claus who rides through the city on his sleigh. After the parade, there is a tree-lighting ceremony held at the city building and Santa is available to visit and take pictures with the children.

Farmer’s Market now accepting SNAP benefits
About 50 new customers shopped at the Spanish Fork Farmer’s Market last summer after the market began participating in a federal program for low-income individuals and families. Last summer was the first time the farmer’s market began accepting SNAP benefits. SNAP, which stands for Supplemental Nutrition Assistance Program, is administered by the USDA Food and Nutrition Service. The program provides funds for low-income families and individuals via a card resembling a debit card with which they can buy food at grocery stores. The Spanish Fork Farmer’s Market is operated by the Spanish Fork Salem Area Chamber of Commerce. Heather Youd, the chamber’s executive director, said the chamber decided to start accepting SNAP benefits due to requests from both customers at the market and Tabitha’s Way, a local food pantry. “That was the big push, to help Tabitha’s Way and other families in need,” Youd said. “They came to us and said, ‘We have a big need for fresh fruits and vegetables. That is something that is rarely donated to the food pantry.” The SNAP benefits can only be used at the market for grocery-type items such as salsa or bread. “They come to

us and they have an allotment that they get each month … and they redeem some of that allotment for wooden tokens they can use to buy from almost every vendor at the market,” Youd said. The vendors accept the wooden tokens as payment, then turn them into the chamber at the end of the day in exchange for cash. The chamber obtained a $750 grant from Spanish Fork City’s Active and Healthy Committee to purchase the equipment needed to accept SNAP benefits. Another $500 grant from Western AgCredit helped pay to advertise that the market was now accepting the benefits. In addition to the SNAP benefits, the market also began participating last summer in a program called Double Up that was offered through Utahns Against Hunger. Through this program, which is only operated at farmer’s markets, if a SNAP recipient takes out $10 in SNAP benefits, they will receive a match of up to $10, giving them a total of $20 to spend. The Double Up money can only be used for fresh produce. Last summer, the market did just over $3,000 in SNAP sales and almost $1,400 in Double Up sales. “That’s a lot of fruit and vegetables for people who otherwise wouldn’t
have had access to it,” Youd said. It is hoped that even more people will utilize these resources at the market this summer, Youd added. The Spanish Fork Farmer’s Market is held every Saturday morning from the end of July to the end of October in the parking lot behind the Spanish Fork City Offices at 40 S. Main. It’s been in operation for more than 25 years, with the chamber assuming management of it several years ago. The Spanish Fork market is unique in that only food products are sold. It also only lets vendors from inside Utah participate. “Probably the best thing about our market is we don’t allow any kind of arts and crafts. It’s a true farmer’s market,” Youd said. This focus is good for the market’s vendors, who sell more without the competition of craft items. The selection varies through the summer according to what vendors participate and what produce is in season, but visitors can expect to see items such as potatoes, watermelons, squash, corn, peaches, pears, pies, homemade bread, honey, caramel apples and even cactus jelly from

I have watched this organization grow over the past years to become one of the best in the state. We have great individuals who have led this group over the past few years. Fiesta Days & Rodeo
Events for all ages at Fiesta Days 2018
The 2018 Spanish Fork Fiesta Days celebration will have a wide variety of events ranging from parades and sports contests to a craft fair, carnival and the 76th annual Fiesta Days Rodeo. The celebration will kick off with the PyroMusical on Friday, July 13, at the Spanish Fork Sports Park Soccer Fields. The PyroMusical has become one of the biggest events of Fiesta Days with a musical concert starting at 7:30 p.m. and a fireworks show set to music launched at dark. The event is free to the public due to the generosity of amazing businesses. Anderson and Pyrolux donate their time and talents to make this event possible. Events will continue on Saturday, July 14, with a softball tournament, exhibits at the Daughters of Utah Pioneers Museum and a free outdoor movie, Disney Pixar’s “Coco,” shown at 9:15 p.m. in the Spanish Fork City Park behind the library. The week of July 16-22 will include events such as the Kickball Challenge, the Baby Contest and the Spikeball Tournament. The 20th Annual Flag Retirement Ceremony and Military Tribute, where the Utah Army National Guard along with the American Legion and assistance from local Scout Troops will properly retire hundreds of flags collected from throughout the community, will be held on July 17 at the Spanish Fork Fairgrounds. Highlights of the program will feature music from the National Guard’s 23rd Army Band, special guest speakers, local community leaders and a 21-gun salute. Riding clubs, FFA clubs, rodeo royalties, 4-H clubs, handcarts, mountain men and more will participate in the Western Heritage Parade on July 19 at 7 p.m. on Spanish Fork’s Main Street from 900 North to the fairgrounds. The
seventh annual Spanish Fork’s Got Talent Competition will be held on July 20 at 6:30 p.m. on the library stage at City Park. Anyone between the ages of 5 and 75 is invited to participate in the competition, which is open to vocalists, musicians, jugglers, magicians, comedians, poets, vocal ensembles (not more than four singers), acoustic instrumental ensembles (not more than four members), dance groups (not more than twelve participants) and those with any other unique talent. Opening July 20 and continuing through July 30 is Spanish Fork Community Theater’s production of “Monty Python’s Spamalot.” Saturday, July 21, will be filled with activities ranging from a golf tournament and car show to sidewalk sales, a children’s parade, the fish rodeo and a street dance for all ages. The Sunday Night in the Park event on July 22 will feature singer Yahosh Bonner, a member of the Debra Bonner Unity Gospel Choir who performs with them many times a year as a soloist. A family concert featuring Pat Swenson and friends will be presented on Monday, July 23, at 6:30 p.m. in City Park. The celebration will culminate on Tuesday, July 24, with the annual Grand Parade at 9 a.m. on Center and Main Streets as well as entertainment in City Park, the Adopt-aDuck Fireman Fundraiser and the Fireworks Spectacular. Performing before the fireworks will be Urban Pulse, a highenergy, modern dance band that puts on explosive live entertainment with today’s hits of pop, rock and country in addition to yesterday’s classics. Fiesta Days Rodeo set for July 20-14 The 76th annual Fiesta Days Rodeo, sponsored by Mountain View Hospital, will be presented on July 20, 21, 23 and 24 at the Spanish Fork Fairgrounds, 475 S. Main. Pre-show activities will begin each evening at 7 p.m. with rodeo action beginning at 8 p.m. Tickets are now on sale for this world-class event, which is a Gold Member on the Million Dollar Tour of Professional Rodeo. World champions compete using a back-to-back format. The 12 best contestants during each morning slack will move to the evening’s performance, allowing audiences to see event champions every night. This makes each night exciting and different, so bring the whole family and join in on the western fun all week long. Salem Mayor’s Message As mayor of Salem, I would like to thank the Spanish Fork Salem Area Chamber of Commerce for giving me the opportunity to introduce you to our beautiful community and share some of the highlights we enjoy as Salem citizens. Honored by Safewise, Salem City was again in the top 10 safest cities in Utah in 2017. Salem is rapidly growing and becoming home to a fabulous community of people. During the last several years, we have seen tremendous growth in the population of Salem. We now have three elementary schools, a junior high and our own high school. If you have never visited the community of Salem, you should plan a trip with your family to enjoy the beauty and recreation opportunities found at our beloved Salem Pond. It is a hot spot for the people of our community and our neighbors. Salem Days Salem Days, the annual week-long celebration held in Salem City, will be held Aug. 3 through 11 in 2018. This celebration includes a wide variety of activities including a breakfast in the park, a baby contest and a car show. Two parades are held: the Children’s Parade and the Grand Parade. For the sports enthusiast, a variety of events are held such as the coed softball, golf and kickball tournaments and the Family Fun Run. Competitors are encouraged to get dirty at the Mud Volleyball Tournament held at the Rodeo Arena. Also held at the Rodeo Arena is the Little Buck-a-Roo Rodeo, with little buck-a-roos competing in events such as barrel racing, steer riding and mutton busting. A unique event held during Salem Days is the Cardboard Duct Tape Regatta, which has contestants building boats out of cardboard and duct tape and trying to sail them across Salem Pond. Growth: New Fire Station
Spanish Fork plans to construct second fire station
As Spanish Fork grows, so will its need for emergency services. With that in mind, the city has purchased land at 2550 East (Spanish Fork Parkway) and Canyon Road with plans to build a fire station there. Two houses located on the land have been torn down to make way for the new facility, which will be the city’s second fire station and house two ambulances along with a number of ladder trucks and other fire-fighting vehicles. The location will place emergency personnel within five minutes of nearly the entire city. “In 2018, we’ll start the process of identifying what we need in this building,” said Spanish Fork City Manager Seth Perrins. That process will take about a year, followed by the drafting of architectural plans and hiring of a contractor. Construction will probably begin in late 2019 or early 2020. The city has been preparing and planning for this new station for the past two years so it can pay cash for the facility. Perrins said the cost of the station is estimated at $4 to $6 million. One of the features the city already knows it needs in the station is facilities for overnight staffing. Spanish Fork’s
current fire station, located at 370 N. Main, cannot accommodate staff overnight. Currently, Spanish Fork City has a volunteer fire department and a part-time ambulance crew, with ambulance personnel at the station from 7 a.m. to 7 p.m. each day. When a call comes in after hours, ambulance personnel drive from their homes to the station, board the ambulance and drive to the emergency location. The department now receives on average less than one call per night, which isn’t enough to justify overnight staffing. However, “As our population grows, there will be more (calls), and our service level needs to then respond to that,” Perrins said. “Our current facility can’t handle that demand.” The city will also determine if other items such as training facilities or a workout area are also needed in the new facility. Because the new station will be located in a residential area, the design process will include determining how to make the station a good fit for the neighborhood. One concern is the use of sirens and how that can be mitigated to avoid disturbing the neighbors, especially at night. “As we’ve looked around the valley at other municipalities

Hospital construction beginning this summer
Construction is anticipated to begin on a new Intermountain Healthcare hospital in Spanish Fork this summer, with completion expected two years later. The new facility, to be named Spanish Fork Hospital, will be built on a 45-acre site located on Canyon Creek Parkway north of the Spanish Fork Walmart Supercenter. The 240,000-square-foot building will include traditional hospital services as well as space for physicians’ offices. “We actually have signed a contract with Oakland Construction to do the construction of the building and we’re just finishing up design work now, and we hope to break ground in the summer of 2018,” said Jason Wilson, administrator and CEO of Intermountain Healthcare’s American Fork Hospital. The groundbreaking will most likely take place in July or August and a two-year construction period is anticipated, meaning the hospital would open in the summer of 2020. Wilson, a native of Spanish Fork who attended Spanish Fork High School, has a lot of experience working with hospitals similar in size and type to the new Spanish Fork facility, including serving as administrator of the Cedar City Hospital for 10 years. When plans began moving forward
for the Spanish Fork Hospital, Intermountain Healthcare asked Wilson to oversee development of the project. He’s now been involved with the project for about a year, working with city staff on items such as permits and roads while also cultivating relationships with doctors in the south county area. Spanish Fork has been without a hospital for nearly Jason Wilson 50 years. The Hughes Memorial Hospital was operated at 200 N. 200 West, Spanish Fork, by Dr. Joseph Hughes and later his son Dr. Preston Hughes, but it was closed in 1969. “We see the Spanish Fork/Mapleton area as probably the biggest need for a hospital in the county right now,” Wilson said. Residential construction expected to remain strong
Residential housing construction was strong in Spanish Fork during 2017 and is expected to continue at about the same rate during 2018 barring any changes in the economy. “We expect that 2018 will be very similar in housing development to 2017,” said Spanish Fork City Manager Seth Perrins. “We’ll know more about 2019 as we move forward through 2018 and see what developments come.” A lot of the development will occur on the city’s east bench, with Perrins estimating that 200 new homes may be built this year in that area. A large new residential development is also in the planning stages on the west side of Spanish Fork. The area, which encompasses about 75 acres, is located on Del Monte Road and State Road 164 and is now home to a gravel pit. Canyon Creek Shopping Center continues to grow
Several major retailers opened new stores in Spanish Fork’s Canyon Creek Shopping Center development during 2017, and more businesses are sure to follow. “We see southern Utah County growing dramatically over the next 10 years, partially because there’s a lot of land there to develop,” said Jeff Woodbury, senior vice president of development and acquisitions for Woodbury Corporation, the developer of the Canyon Creek Shopping Center. Located in the area of the meeting of Interstate 15 and Highway 6, Canyon Creek encompasses 240 acres and is home to Costco, Walmart and a variety of restaurants and smaller retailers. Multiple stores opened in Canyon Creek during 2017 including T.J.Maxx, Maurices, Olive Garden and the Cinemark Spanish Fork and XD movie theaters, among others. Woodbury Corporation is currently in negotiations with miscellaneous “box stores” to locate in Canyon Creek. “We’d like to add a few more sit-down restaurants,” Woodbury said. Restaurant chains prefer to create new locations that don’t compete with the customer bases of their current restaurants, and Spanish Fork is far enough away to be attractive to companies who may already have locations in central or northern Utah County. “We’re hoping that Olive Garden does well” because its
parent company owns several other restaurant chains, Woodbury said. Ultimately, Woodbury Corporation wants to make Canyon Creek a destination area for customers and travelers. With Intermountain Healthcare beginning construction of a new hospital in the Canyon Creek area this summer, Woodbury said his company will most likely develop an office building nearby. “There are a lot of other businesses that do well around hospitals,” he said. In addition to Canyon Creek, Woodbury Corporation is the developer of The Meadows, a regional shopping center in American Fork, and University Place in Orem, a 120-acre mixed-use development project formerly known as the University Mall. “When we do our macro-economic studies, the opportunities for growth are greater in south county than in north county,” Woodbury said. “There’s just more land there, that’s what it comes down to.” Woodbury predicted southern Utah County would see many different types of businesses, including manufacturing, locate in the area over the next two or three years. The area lacks the congestion of Salt Lake County, but companies can serve the Intermountain West as easily from southern Utah County as they can from Salt Lake County, he said.

This is due to what’s going to open or what potentially could open that year in Canyon Creek. “It’s been years and years and years to get to this point, 11 or 12 years in

fact, and we’re still only about halfway through with the square footage that could be built in the Canyon Creek project.” Anderson said city employees will have to remain on their toes through the growth to deal with traffic and other concerns, some of which will be difficult to address. “So we know that it’s not all perfect and that it won’t come without some impact to the community,” he said. However, “The community seems to really appreciate having additional services and opportunities to shop of that sort in town,” he said.

Growth: River Bottoms
City working to define future of River Bottoms area
While the Spanish Fork area has seen strong residential and commercial growth in recent years, one area remains nearly development-free: the Spanish Fork River Bottoms. The area, measuring approximately 1,850 acres, lies along the south side of the city and is made up almost entirely of farmland. As development continues in the city, however, attention will shift at some point to the River Bottoms. In an effort to ensure land in the area is properly utilized, Spanish Fork City officials have begun studying the River Bottoms with the goal of creating a long-range vision for land use in the area. “In essence, it’s an effort by our city council to make sure that we’re staying ahead of development pressure, to make sure that we are in sync with what the community wants to see in the River Bottoms, and to put a plan together that hopefully will last for many decades for the River Bottoms,” said Spanish Fork City Community and Economic Development Director Dave Anderson. The city has hired Logan Simpson Design, a community planning firm, to assist in the project, which is anticipated to take most of 2018 to complete and cost between $50,000 and $100,000. Anderson said he expects that there will be a lot of community input and involvement as the study progresses. Most of the area lies in Utah County, not Spanish Fork City, although the city anticipates annexing it in the future as property owners request it, Anderson said. As a result, Utah County officials will also be heavily involved in the study process. No significant development is being contemplated at this time in the River Bottoms, but the city has received several proposals for annexation and multiple requests for development approvals in recent years, which led city staff and officials to discuss the area’s future. “I think it’s something that we really, really need to make sure of, that we’re treating that treasured area the right way,” Anderson said. The vision plan may include criteria defining what development should look like in the area or distinguishing areas that should develop from those that shouldn’t. “Right now, nobody really has any preconceived notions about what ultimately should be in the plan or part of the vision,” Anderson said, “but we do know that it’s going to be really, really important for the community for a long time to come, so we want to get it right.” The River Bottoms area is bordered by Main Street and Woodland Hills Drive on the west, River Bottoms Road on the north and Powerhouse Road on the south. River Bottoms Road and Powerhouse Road meet at the east end of the area near the mouth of Spanish Fork Canyon. Anderson said from a planning perspective, Spanish Fork City has never done anything this large before. “It’s something that I think, more so today than even just a few years ago, people in Spanish Fork really appreciate because we built a trail along the river,” he said, referencing a paved, public trail that follows the Spanish Fork River for more than six miles. “With that, a lot of residents have had an opportunity to really experience the beauty, the serenity of the area in ways that really weren’t possible a few years earlier before that trail was built.”

Summer movies, events planned downtown in 2018
After a successful second year of downtown activities in 2017, Spanish Fork’s Downtown On Main organization is again planning a summer full of movies, sales and other events in the city’s historic downtown area. “We’ve kind of come from out of nowhere to get to where we were last year,” said Spanish Fork City Community and Economic Development Director Dave Anderson. “Now we’re just trying to maintain consistency so the people know they can expect certain things.” Downtown on Main operates as a committee of the Spanish Fork Salem Area Chamber of Commerce. Serving on the committee are downtown business owners and property owners as well as representatives of Spanish Fork City’s economic development department and city council. It held its first activities during the summer of 2016. All its events are part of the organization’s efforts to promote downtown businesses and draw people into Spanish Fork’s downtown area. “It’s an important corridor still for commerce,” Anderson said. “We absolutely recognize that as a city and want to do everything we can to keep it strong in that respect.” However, working to strengthen the downtown area is about more than promoting businesses. “It’s not just about commerce, and it’s not just about history, and it’s not just about its location or geography, but it’s about sort of all of those things, and I think it’s also about just what makes Spanish Fork unique,” Anderson said. “The fact that historically we’ve had six or seven blocks along Main Street downtown that really were a center for commerce has
changed over time, but we have a lot of residents here that remember spending a lot of time on Main Street doing a lot of things, and I think that connection with the city’s past is really important.” The events planned for 2018 are similar to those held in 2017 and will include the following: Movies in the Park: The free movies held nearly every Monday evening last summer were a big hit, attracting many residents to enjoy food and entertainment in the outdoors. This year’s movie series will be held on Friday nights, starting on Friday, June 1 and continue through the summer. The movies are shown in City Park, 49 S. Main. Food vendors will be available. Anderson said that downtown businesses have sponsored individual movies in the past, but Downtown On Main is hoping to increase businesses’ participation in the events this year. “I think that will help strengthen that connection with commerce and movies in the park and hopefully with some of the other things we do as well,” he said. Wolfsburg On Main: This event is a car show showcasing Volkswagen automobiles. At the first Wolfsburg On Main last year, Volkswagen owners and enthusiasts were able to enjoy viewing the many different models of the iconic brand that were on display. There was also a competition where owners competed in categories such as Best Buggy, Best Interior, Best Baja and Best Paint. Last year’s car show went well, Anderson said, adding that he is looking forward to having even more entries this year. “Last year was our first year of (the car show), so frank-

Street Fair on Main: This craft fair is held on 200 South downtown or, in case of inclement weather, it is held at the Veterans Memorial Building. Downtown On Main plans to work on growing its current events this year rather than add new ones. “I think that we’ve always realized that it would take some time for us to work out some bugs and find out what works, what’s worthwhile and what’s not, and I think we’re already kind of settling in on where the best places are to invest our time and our resources to get the biggest bang for our buck downtown,” Anderson said.

Peak Center offers Nebo students career, college courses
Nebo School District students have much greater access to early college and career courses as well as indoor athletic progams with the opening of the Nebo Peak Center. Officially opened in August of 2017, the Peak Center sits on a 13-acre site at 161 E. 400 North, Salem that was purchased by the district. Buildings on the site were then renovated to house the Nebo Advanced Learning Center as well as a fieldhouse and a warehouse and maintenance shop for district operations. The Advanced Learning Center, a 49,000-square-foot facility, provides a wide variety of courses to high school students for college credit, career readiness and industry certification. These courses include aviation, computer programming and repair, digital media, audio engineering, video production, medical science, criminal justice, building construction, engineering, robotics, manufacturing and teacher education. The courses are open for district students in 10th through 12th grade to attend while they are still involved at their own high school. “We have students that have earned their associate’s degrees before they graduate from high school,” said Lana Hiskey, Nebo School district’s community relations administrator.
One of the great benefits to students of taking college credit courses while in high school is that the courses are provided free of charge, saving them potentially thousands of dollars in college tuition. During the 2016-17 school year, Nebo District saved students earning college credit through various courses a total of $5.6 million. The ALC was formerly located in the old Westside Elementary School building on south Main Street in Springville. Its new location is significantly larger than its former Springville facility, allowing the district to add programs such as aviation that were not previously available. There is a recording studio at the ALC as well as robotics classrooms, engineering classrooms, a testing center and three labs. About 200 students were attending classes at the Springville ALC; since the ALC moved to Salem, that number has jumped to nearly 900 students. Also at the Nebo Peak Center is an 82,000-square-foot fieldhouse that has fields for softball, baseball, batting and pitching, soccer, football, golf, track and volleyball. This facility is open to athletic programs in all Nebo district high schools, providing students with practice time inside out of the elements. Any time left over at the fieldhouse is available for rental to other athletic teams.

Education: Suicide Prevention Spanish Fork offering free suicide prevention training Spanish Fork businesses, churches and other organizations now have access to free training in how to recognize the warning signs that someone may be considering suicide. Two years ago, Spanish Fork City applied for an Active and Healthy Communities Grant from the Utah League of Cities and Towns. The league had been provided with a donation from Intermountain Healthcare to fund four $225,000 grants to promote healthy living in four Utah communities. Spanish Fork submitted an application and was one of the four communities chosen to receive a grant. Originally, Spanish Fork intended to apply all the grant money toward reducing obesity, physical inactivity and asthma in the community. However, shortly after the grant application was submitted, a woman in the local community suffering from postpartum depression died during a panic attack when she was struck by traffic. Not long afterward, a young woman who was involved in many community activities in Spanish Fork and suffered from depression died by suicide. As a result, the city decided to submit an addendum to its grant application expressing a desire to utilize a portion of the grant money to assist residents in overcoming mental health issues, said Spanish Fork City Councilman Mike Mendenhall. “Here in Utah, we think, ‘Aw, we’re tough. Let’s get over it and move on. Well, that doesn’t work for everybody,” Mendenhall said. Spanish Fork has since used grant money to train several city employees to become certified QPR instructors. These employees are now offering free one-hour courses to local businesses, churches, community groups and others to teach individuals how to recognize the warning signs of a suicide crisis and how to Question, Persuade and Refer someone to help. “The QPR mission is to reduce suicidal behaviors and save lives by providing innovative, practical and proven suicide prevention training,” states the website qprinstitute.com. “The signs of crisis are all around us. We believe that quality education empowers all people, regardless of their background, to make a positive difference in the life of someone they know.” “In the last five years, we’ve seen a 144 percent increase in the suicide rate of our youth. That’s a startling statistic,” said Susan Chapman, a volunteer with the Spanish Fork QPR program. The QPR program has been extensively studied by experts in the field, she said, and is known to work. It is utilized in high schools by Hope Squads. “This is more valuable than you would ever know, and in attending the training, you’ll find that out,” Mendenhall

Spanish Fork City is committed to continuing the QPR training program even after the grant money has been spent, he said. Education: Marching Band Programs One city, two championshop marching bands
Marching bands from Spanish Fork High School and Maple Mountain High School took first place in state competition last fall in their respective competition categories. With both schools located within Spanish Fork, this means the city is now home to two state marching band champions. In Utah, bands compete in one of five competition classes based on the size of the band, not the size of the school. These classes range from the 1A Class for bands with 45 or fewer members to the 5A Class for bands with 127 members or more. It is highly unusual for two championship bands to be based in one Utah city. It is even more impressive considering that SFHS competes in the 1A Class and MMHS competes in the 2A Class. These two classes are the most competitive of the five classes as they have the most bands enrolled in them. The wins last fall were surprises for both Spanish Fork schools, neither of which had ever won a state title in marching band before. Below are their stories.
SPANISH FORK HIGH SCHOOL
When Spanish Fork High School Band Director Clint Roberts took over the band program in the fall of 2013, the marching band program had dwindled. Before the construction of Salem Hills and Maple Mountain high schools, which pulled students away from SFHS, the Spanish Fork band marched bands of 100-plus students. During Robert’s first year at the school, the band had 21 people on the field, and it took last place in nearly every competition. “I had one percussionist,” Roberts said. But Roberts didn’t give up, and neither did his band students. “For us, it was, look, we’re going to start something great. And we’re going to take it one step at a time to better the program,” he said. “It was a joy to work with kids that were eager to do well regardless of what shiny plastic thing came home with them.” Over the next several years, membership went up, and so did the quality of the band. “This year, I spent more time than ever making phone calls

and bringing in clinicians and doing everything I could to provide the quality resources for each section just to give them the tools so that they could have a great show,” Roberts said. The SFHS Marching Band’s 2017 fall show was titled “Conspiracy Theory.” With an overall spy theme, the show featured a color guard wearing black trench coats and question mark motifs were utilized throughout the drills for visual effect. With 43 students in its band last fall, SFHS competed in the 1A Class, the category for bands with 45 or fewer members. “We knew we had a great show from the beginning of the season. We placed third at our first competition,” Roberts said. As the season progressed, it remained in the top three at each competition until the Bridgerland Band Invitational in Logan, where the band won first place in the 1A Class. “Bringing home something shiny that says ‘1’ was pretty amazing,” Roberts said. The Spanish Fork High School 2017 1A State Championship Marching Band Utah marching bands compete for “caption” awards in four categories: visual, music, percussion and color guard performance. At Bridgerland, SFHS took all the caption awards except percussion. It was the band’s only first place during the season, but it continued to score well. These scores proved important when SFHS reached the last competition of the season, the Red Rocks State Marching Band Competition. At this event, the performance lineup is based on a band’s cumulative scores over the season. SFHS was scheduled to performance last in its class - the most coveted performance slot. “Everything was set up in a way that we had a really good chance of taking the state championship,” Roberts said. However, it was still far from guaranteed, and the band waited anxiously in the stands following its performance for the results to be announced. Caption awards are announced first and tend to indicate who will win the top three places, and SFHS was thrilled

Seeing the music caption award go to Timpanogos High School was especially disheartening as the winner of the music award typically goes on to receive first place in the class. “And at this point, it’s, there’s no way. We didn’t score high enough,” Roberts said. Then the placement announcements were made. Third place went to Grantsville High School. Second place went to Timpanogos. Then first place - and the state championship - went to Spanish Fork High. “Everyone is just screaming and excited. Tears were flowing,” Roberts said as he described his band’s reaction. “Parents are just going nuts.” Roberts said he is proud of how his students handled every step of the season. “I pushed them really hard. I asked a lot of them,” he said. “It wasn’t necessarily on the schedule, it wasn’t more hours in rehearsal, but it was higher expectation in rehearsal.”
MAPLE MOUNTAIN HIGH SCHOOL
Joshua Hurst, director of bands at Maple Mountain High School, couldn’t be more surprised that his marching band won the state championship last fall. Hurst graduated from Utah Valley University and landed
his first job as a music educator at MMHS last summer. Just as he began gearing up for the marching season, his entire staff of marching coaches quit and he had to find replacements. He also had to convince his new students that the changes he was making in the program would be beneficial to them. Maple Mountain has been open for nine years and has had a marching band since its beginning, but the band had never won the state title or even placed in state competition. Hurst, who was a member of the American Fork High School Marching Band and has worked as a staff member for the Lone Peak, American Fork and Westlake high school marching bands, said he wanted to continue the experience of marching band for MMHS’s students. “I wanted to give the students that I teach an opportunity and experience similar to what I had and marching band just brings a sense of community and it brings a sense of pride,” Hurst said. The band’s 2017 show, called “Under Construction,” was based on the band’s quote of the year: “Can we build it? Yes we can!” A total of 47 students marched with the band, placing it in the 2A competition class. This class is open to bands with 46 to 63 members, meaning MMHS was one of the smallest bands in its class. The band’s first performance was at the Orem Showcase, DA

Education: Marching Band Programs an event where judges critique the bands’ performances but don’t score them. Hurst said two of the judges told him the MMHS band didn’t have good enough show design or student performance to be a competitor in the 2017 fall season. “Basically, I felt like all of our hard work the last four months of the summer was for nothing,” Hurst said. “And then I thought about it and decided, I can’t accept that…. We needed to work harder and fight.” After more intense practice, MMHS went to its first scored event, the Nebo Invitational Marching Band Competition. Hurst said no one expected anything out of MMHS - and the band took second place in its class. Then the first-place winner was announced, and it had beaten MMHS by only one-tenth of a point. Once the students saw their results at the Nebo Invitational, they fully embraced the changes Hurst had made in the program and made the connection of how those changes could transform them into a championship band, Hurst said. As the competition season continued, the MMHS band continued to win second place, then took a couple of first places, but the scores were always very close. Going into the state championship, the Red Rocks State Marching Band Competition, it was unclear who would end up taking the top spot. MMHS performed along with 10 other bands

in the 2A Class, then waited to hear the results. First, the caption awards were announced. MMHS won the award for best visuals; the other caption awards were presented to other bands. Then the final placement was announced - and this time, it was MMHS’s turn to take the top spot by one-tenth of a point over the second-place band. “They went crazy. Lots of screaming, crying, jumping up for joy,” Hurst said. “They had performed so well that I was speechless.” Hurst said one of the most amazing moments was when the MMHS students rushed over to him for a giant group hug. “I’ve lived a lot of great musical moments, but that moment is one of the top moments that I’ve ever experienced,” he said.

New sections planned for Spanish Fork River Trail
The Spanish Fork River Trail has become a beautiful and popular option for residents who enjoy walking and bicycling. Beginning near the mouth of Spanish Fork Canyon, this paved trail follows the Spanish Fork River through Canyon View Park and on past views of farmland in Spanish Fork’s River Bottoms area. Eventually the trail passes the Spanish Fork Sports Park and continues west almost to Interstate 15. In all, more than six miles of asphalt-paved trail are available for public use. Now, with grant funds from Mountainland Association of Governments, the city is planning to build five extensions onto the river trail that will extend its length and improve its connection with other city amenities and locations. “It’s very well used, heavily used,” said Spanish Fork Parks Division Manager Bart Morrill of the river trail. The grant amount is nearly $3 million, and Morrill said he is hopeful the money will pay for all five trail extensions. The city won’t know for sure how much will be covered until the project goes out for bids. Design work for the new trail section is scheduled to be done by the end of March; construction is planned for this summer and completion is anticipated for this fall.

The five planned trail sections are as follows: The Sugar Beet Trail Section: This section will create a connection extending the west end of the river trail west to 1550 West. The section is located near an old sugar beet factory, giving it its name. Morrill said the hope is that this new section will make the trail more accessible to bicyclists and others on 1550 West. Long-range plans call for the trail to eventually go under the freeway and continue to Utah Lake. The Fairgrounds Trail Section: This section would provide a way to access the river trail from the Spanish Fork Fairgrounds. The new trail would proceed from the fairgrounds along South Lane and then up 7650 South to connect into the river trail. Morrill said the city is still trying to work out some concerns with this trail section. “It’s probably the last priority for right now because there’s so many questions on what development’s going to go on through there,” he said. 1400 East and 1700 East connections to the Poplar Lane Trail: These trail sections will connect the south ends of 1400 East and 1700 East to River Bottom Road. The sections will then travel east and west toward each other, meeting at Poplar Lane (1100 East). “Our intent is to have people access the river trail from off the bench,” Morrill said.
Recreation: Trail System The Poplar Lane Trail: The two new sections of trail coming down off the bench will meet at Poplar Lane (1100 East). From there, new trail will be built along Poplar Lane to the existing Spanish Fork River Trail. Dripping Rock Trail/Reservoir Trail: A new section of trail is planned to begin where the existing Dripping Rock Trail ends at an old diversion dam near the southeast corner of The Oaks at Spanish Fork golf course. A bridge will be constructed over the river for the new trail, and the trail will then follow the river until it crosses the river again via a second new bridge. The trail will then wind its way up the mountain until it hits the Strawberry Canal Road. It will follow Strawberry Canal Road up and around a pond by the golf course until it ties into a section of trail along Fairway Drive. At the end of Fairway Drive, new trail will continue up
and around the Spanish Oaks Reservoir and end at the reservoir’s parking lot. “It will make a great section. You have views, you have access to the reservoir,” Morrill said. Once they’re at the reservoir, hikers and bicyclists can also utilize a variety of dirt trails above the reservoir.

Golf Course to open with new name, larger clubhouse
Spanish Fork City is renaming its golf course this year as it also opens a newly refurbished and expanded clubhouse at the course. What was once known as the Spanish Oaks Golf Course will now be named The Oaks at Spanish Fork. A new logo for the course depicts an acorn on top of a golf tee. “It will be a new, fresh start with the new clubhouse and things,” said Ryan Rhees, the course’s head golf pro. Local players already refer to the course as The Oaks, he added. The change comes as work wraps up on a $1.6 million renovation and expansion project at the golf course’s clubhouse. The course and the clubhouse were built in 1981 and the clubhouse was getting old and run down. “It definitely needed an upgrade,” Rhees said. The clubhouse also lacked the space to host golf tournaments and other events that take place at the course. The one area available for events could only seat from 60 to 70 people, and most golf tournaments attract between 100 and 150 people. This presented a problem if a luncheon or other gathering was desired after a tournament. The clubhouse building is structurally sound, so work within the existing building has included installing new carpet, windows and doors and repainting the walls. Meanwhile, on the building’s east side, a new addition has been built with 3,600 square feet on the lower floor and another

3,600 square feet on the upper floor, adding a total of 7,200 square feet of space to the clubhouse. The lower floor with serve as storage for golf carts and other equipment. The upper floor will become the clubhouse’s events center, providing a large, open area where gatherings such as tournament luncheons, weddings and corporate events can be held. “We think it will be a popular spot,” Rhees said. “We think that there’s a need for it. We think that our community’s going to keep growing.”

The events center includes a small prep kitchen, bathrooms, some storage and a bride’s room. Floor-to-ceiling windows will allow visitors to take in breathtaking views of the golf course and the surrounding mountains. Construction work has also greatly expanded the deck on the north side of the building. The deck has been widened and now extends all the way down the building’s new addition. The cafe inside the existing clubhouse building has been expanded slightly and remodeled for a nicer look. The pro shop will remain the same size but also have improved decor. Work on the clubhouse renovation and addition began Aug. 1, 2017, and is anticipated to be completed by April or
May of this year. In the past, the clubhouse has hosted from 10 to 15 outside events per year, but Rhees said he hopes the clubhouse will attract more events with its new facility. I think it will just make for an overall nicer experience for the customer.” The Oaks at Spanish Fork hosts an average of 55,000 to 60,000 nine-hole rounds of golf per year.

Two Franciscan friars named Silvestre Valez de Escalante and Francisco Atanasio de Dominguez were some of the first explorers to pass through the Spanish Fork area. These priests were searching for a direct route from Santa Fe, New Mexico, to Monterey, California. After traveling down Spanish Fork Canyon, they camped somewhere near the present day city limits on Sept. 23, 1776. A bronze sculpture, sculpted by Avard Fairbanks, that depicts the friars and their guide is located in the Spanish Fork City Park, 49 S. Main.
In the mid-1800s, Icelanders who had converted to the Mormon faith made the long journey from their homeland to Utah, where they settled in Spanish Fork. This created the first permanent Icelandic settlement in the United States, and today the city is the oldest continuous Icelandic settlement in North America. In recognition of its Icelandic heritage, the city is home to the Icelandic Monument, a light house located at 800 E. Canyon Road that was dedicated in 1938. Each year in June, the Icelandic Association of Utah sponsors the Icelandic Festival celebration in Spanish Fork. Events include speakers, food booths and children’s activities. The 2018 Spanish Fork Icelandic Festival will be held June 22-24.
The beautiful cream-colored Sri Sri Radha Krishna Temple, which features intricate architectural details, shines like a jewel on a hill located between the communities of Spanish Fork and Salem. Built to serve Utah County’s Hindu population, the temple annually hosts the Western Hemisphere’s largest Holi festival, or Festival of Colors, with thousands gathering to celebrate by throwing colored powder into the air. Other festivals are held throughout the year as well along with art displays, weddings and other events including yoga and meditation classes and public worship services. The grounds include a beautiful koi pond with lotus flowers blooming throughout the summer months as well as an animal farm with peacocks, llamas and miniature cows. The temple is also known for its annual Llama Fest. It is located at 8628 S. State Road, Spanish Fork. The 2018 Festival of Colors will be held on March 24 and 25.

The Spanish Fork Family History Center, operated by The Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints, is dedicated to providing education and support for the family history community in the Spanish Fork area. The center is open to the public and its resources are available for use free of charge. Trained volunteers are available during center hours and by appointment to help visitors. A variety of classes are held at the center each month centering on various aspects of genealogy work, including familiarizing patrons with internet tools. Groups can make appointments to receive instruction at the center. The center is located at 420 S. Main, Spanish Fork.
Recreation Listings SPANISH OAKS RESERVOIR Open from early spring through late fall, the Spanish Oaks Reservoir and its surrounding area offer swimming, fishing, camping, playgrounds and more, providing plenty of opportunities for all ages to have fun in the outdoors. The concrete reservoir has a sandy beach and swimmers are welcome. It’s also a destination for anglers as the reservoir is regularly stocked with fish. Picnic areas, including pavilions, are nearby as are play areas for children, a walking path and restrooms. The reservoir is perched on a hill above Spanish Fork at 2931 S. Spanish Oaks Drive, giving visitors a spectacular view of Utah County.
CANYON VIEW RV PARK This park provides 24 RV stalls with water and power hookups; a disposal station is also on site. Picnic tables are also available. The nearby Canyon View Park offers a playground, pavilions, restrooms and athletic fields. The RV park is located at 3300 E. Powerhouse Road.
SPANISH FORK CANYON Spanish Fork Canyon offers many recreational opportunities from camping and hiking to picnicking and enjoying the scenic drive, especially during the fall when the canyon is bright with autumn colors.
SPANISH FORK RIVER PARK This park, located at the confluence of Diamond Fork with the Spanish Fork River in Spanish Fork Canyon, offers spaces for overnight camping and individual picnicking pavilions on a first come, first served basis. Children can enjoy the playground and all can explore area trails and even fish in the Spanish Fork River. Potable water is available as are restroom facilities.
THE OAKS AT SPANISH FORK The Oaks at Spanish Fork is an 18hole, par 72 golf course with a driving range, putting greens, a practice bunker, a full-service pro shop and a snack bar with catering options. The course is a Mountain/Traditional style with Pencross Greens, Bent Grass Rough and Bent Grass Fairways. The layout of the golf course was designed by two-time U.S. Open and Masters Champion Billy Casper. Located at the mouth of Spanish Fork Canyon at 2300 E. Powerhouse Road, the golf course provides golfers with beautiful views of the surrounding mountains. The Oaks at Spanish Fork is operated by Spanish Fork City.

SPANISH FORK DISC GOLF COURSE
Lovers of sports can find a large variety of opportunities to play at the Spanish Fork Sports Park. This large park includes seven softball fields, a baseball field, batting cages, seven soccer fields, tennis courts, two pavilions, a walking path and a playground. The park annually hosts The Big Slam, the largest accelerated girls softball tournament in Utah, as well as state high school softball championships and baseball playoffs. SPANISH FORK WATER PARK The Spanish Fork Water Park features an outdoor pool, a 150-foot water slide, a splash pad, three sand volleyball courts, a small basketball court, horse shoe pits, a concessions stand and a pavilion for picnics and parties. The Spanish Fork Gun Club was organized in 1972 by a small group of volunteers. Through their efforts and the continued time, effort and dedication of more volunteers along the way, the gun club has grown to be one of the finest shooting facilities in the country. The gun club is located near the mouth of Spanish Fork Canyon overlooking beautiful Utah Valley. Because of its unique setting and the high visibility of its targets, people come from to the Spanish Fork Gun Club from all over the United States to shoot great scores. Membership is $20 per year and provides discounts on practice rounds and reloading supplies.
Salem Pond has long been central to the city of Salem; the area was known to early settlers as Pond Town. Located at 200 W. 300 South, the large pond is surrounded by a park where visitors can enjoy activities such as birdwatching and picnicking. There is a playground and a sandy beach as well as a walking path and a beautiful arched bridge that provides a picturesque view of the area. Salem Pond is considered one of Utah’s urban fisheries with likely catches including rainbow trout, channel catfish and largemouth bass. Various city activities occur at the pond including the Cardboard Duct Tape Regatta held during the annual Salem Days celebration. This event has teams constructing boats out of cardboard and duct tape and competing with each other to sail across the pond. The Salem Days Fireworks are also held at the pond. At Christmastime, Salem presents Pond Town Christmas at the pond, with Christmas trees ablaze with lights floating on the water.

Recreation: Utah County Fair Spanish Fork hosts Utah County Fair
Each year, Spanish Fork City serves as host to the Utah County Fair, a four-day celebration of local crafts and talents and good old-fashioned fun. The fair is held at the Spanish Fork Fairgrounds, 475 S. Main. This year’s fair will be held from Wednesday to Saturday, Aug. 15-18. Local gardeners and crafters from throughout the county enter their produce and creations for judging and display at the fair. There is a category for everyone to enter, from cloth-
ing and handwork to the fine arts, photography, quilts, foods and canning, and floriculture. Spectators can enjoy a variety of horse shows and a small animals show. The Utah County Fair Jr. Livestock Show is also part of the event. Commercial, craft and food vendors will offer their wares to those attending the fair. Entertainment is always a big part of the fair, with a talent show planned along with headline musical acts. A favorite at the fair is the Demolition Derby, which sells out every year.
