grand marshals Mark and colleen bezzant

M

ark Bezzant is a lifelong Pleasant Grove resident. His wife Colleen, a Tooele native, joined him here when they were married in 1971, and they raised their children in the community they love. Mark’s roots go deep into Pleasant Grove’s past. His great-grandfather Bezzant walked here when he was 9 years old. His great-grandfather Adamson operated the first flour mill in Pleasant Grove. Mark says he’s tried to contribute and move the community forward like his ancestors have done and “just keep making Pleasant Grove a more beautiful and pleasant place to be.” In high school, Mark was a drum major in the Pleasant Grove High School marching band and served as a student body officer. He went on to serve a mission for the Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints. His first job out of college was back at Pleasant Grove High School, this time as a teacher of law, economics, and debate. At 22 years old, Mark was elected to a 4-year term on the Pleasant Grove City Council. Some of his accomplishments during that time were bringing the first professional street planning to Pleasant Grove, establishing the sewer plant, and securing the land for Battle Creek Park. He also helped get legislation passed to share sales tax with surrounding communities. Mark went on to become a high school counselor and administrator at working with thousands of young people toward bettering themselves. Mark finished his career at Utah Valley University, where he helped oversee the transition from a community college to a state college, to the thriving university it is today. “It’s been fun to watch these students in every aspect and help these students of all walks of life reach their potential,” Mark said.

Presented by: America First Credit Union

During this time, Colleen focused her efforts on raising the couple’s six children and two Native American foster children. The Bezzants now have 16 grandchildren and two great-grandchildren. “She was tremendous support for everything we wanted to accomplish,” Mark said. I couldn't have accomplished what I accomplished without her.” She was also heavily involved in the school Parent Teacher Association and served, like her husband, in the Boy Scouts of America program. This year’s Strawberry Days theme “United under the G” has a special meaning for Mark and Colleen. Mark remembers whitewashing and lighting the “G” in high school and lit the G electronically for the first time when he was the high school’s Key Club advisor.

Z

eke and Lorraine Perry have been a fixture in the Pleasant Grove community since they opened the Daylight Donuts on State Street 30 years ago. The business was forced out of its American Fork location. “We ended up over here, which was a great move for us and our business,” said Lorraine. “It’s been really fun being a part of the community over here.” Zeke and Lorraine met at BYU where Zeke played volleyball. Lorraine was from Florida, and after graduation, they moved there for a while and both worked in Law Enforcement. Lorraine also had a radio talk show and worked with the courts to get people employed. After about 6 years, they moved to Orem, Utah and Zeke was employed at Geneva Steel while Lorraine worked to raise their 5 daugh-

ters. They bought the Daylight Donuts business as an investment on the side and as a place for their kids to work after school to raise money for college and church missionss. In 2000, the Perrys moved from Orem to Pleasant Grove to be close to the business and have loved living in such a great community. “I just can’t say enough about the great people of Pleasant Grove,” Lorraine said. “People take pride in their community and you feel like your neighbors and friends would do anything to help anyone. It’s a great life.” Since the move to Pleasant Grove, Daylight Donuts has become an anchor in the community. The Perrys use their business to serve across the city wherever they see a need. They donate to schools and give out coupons for students who complete summer reading programs. They also sponsor the city’s Family Day Hike the first Saturday in June. This past winter, one of the Perry’s neighbors set up a little hot chocolate stand in front of the donut shop to raise money for the Tabitha’s Way food bank. They gave out donuts to those who purchased the hot chocolate. Together they helped provide over 10,000 meals for people. During Strawberry Days, they have enjoyed “making sure all the cowboys have donuts,” and in the past have had entries in the parade. They’ve also given to first responders. “We’ve tried to do what we can to help the community and to be a part of that,” Lorraine said. While still very involved with the store, the Perrys have turned over the day-to-day operations of Daylight Donuts to their daughter, Becky Elieson, who has a natural gift for baking. Three generations now work at the store.

miss pleasant grove

W

e are excited to introduce Brooklin Leslie Allen, Miss Pleasant Grove 2019. Brooklin believes in the power of service, the greatness of others, and the goals that drive her. She comes from a large family and is the second oldest of seven children. She has been living in Pleasant Grove for 15 years. Brooklin’s blood runs Viking Blue—she has hiked to and lit the G, danced in the Strawberry Days Parade, and loves the traditions found in this community she loves. Throughout her life, Brooklin has been passionate about serving others. For the past 3 years she has been teaching PALS—a dance group for special needs men and women. She also is a monthly volunteer at the Bel Aire Care Center where she visits with residents who live there. Brooklin is currently serving as the Student Body Officer over events at Pleasant Grove High School. She has organized fundraisers that have raised almost $20,000 in donations to the Make-A-Wish Foundation. Brooklin will graduate with honors from Pleasant Grove High School in May. She will attend Utah State on academic scholarship working towards a degree in Psychology. She has been on the Pleasant Grove Drill team for 4 years and has served as both Captain and Spirit Officer. She represented Pleasant Grove as the Dance Sterling Scholar on the school and region level. Dance has been a large part of Brooklin’s life. She has been dancing for 15 years, and is trained in Ballet, Jazz, Lyrical, Modern, Hip Hop and Pom. Brooklin has been serving on the Hope Squad for two years. She is QPR Trained in suicide prevention. The experiences within Hope Squad led her to continue her efforts in her Social Impact Initiative “The Ripple Effect.” Through her research, she has found that the average teen spends an average of 2-5 hours on social media every day and teens who spend two or more hours have at least one suicide risk factor. Social media is not going away and the negativity it can bring is detrimental to our mental health.

“The Ripple Effect” is reversing this trend spreading positivity, kindness, and hope online and offline. Her efforts will be linked with Greg Hudnall, the founder of Hope 4 Utah, and a day of HOPE will take place in cities throughout the nation. Brooklin will encourage members of each community to join her in spreading kindness, positivity and hope as they create and place “Hope Rocks” throughout their city, and online using her invitations to do good. Brooklin’s royalty includes First Attendant, Kinsie Robbins; Second Attendant, Kennadie Austin; Third Attendant, Belinda Tapia; and Fourth Attendant, Isabella Adams. Brooklin is excited to serve Pleasant Grove over the next year! She is committed to using her goals, talents and social impact to make a difference in as many lives as she can. If you would like Brooklin to appear at your event or if you have a speaking or presentation opportunity for her, please reach out to Miss Pleasant Grove Director, Kymberlee Wilson at pgwilson238@gmail.com.

ix years ago, a new opportunity was announced for young girls in our community. The opportunity brought back an old tradition that started in the early years of Strawberry Days. In the beginning, photos of Little Miss Strawberry Days participants were put up around town. The citizens would vote for their favorite contestant with pennies. The criteria for participation have changed a bit since the days of “penny voting. Today, each contestant must write a one-page essay specific to a theme. The essay MUST be in the words and language of the participant.

This year more than 30 girls participated in the competition. After the judging process, the five winners were announced at the Miss Pleasant Grove Scholarship Competition in March.

ach year the Strawberry Days Association awards service-based scholarships to seniors who live in Pleasant Grove and Lindon. This is our way of telling the community, “Thank you,” for the countless hours volunteers give to help make Strawberry Days a success. In the spirit of those volunteers, the scholarships are awarded to those who exemplify what it means to be service-oriented. The 2019 Pleasant Grove Strawberry Days Service Scholarship has been awarded to: Ethan Wood, Ella Omdahl, and Lauren McArthur. Ethan has been involved in many different service groups throughout his High School career. He has been a member of PGHS Hope Squad for three years, serving this past year as the club’s president. The past six summers he has been on humanitarian aid trips to the Navajo Reservation. One of his focuses as the Hope Squad President was to help those struggling with depression and suicidal thoughts. His goal was to “see them,” so every student knew they were noticed. One of his advisors said of him, “I am astounded by his kindness, selflessness, and devotion to helping the students of PGHS in any way he can.” Lauren has offered a wide variety of service and volunteering. Her serEthan Wood vice ranges from PGHS Student Body VP, to Math Club Board Member, to Operation Smile, to PG Youth Court, to Church youth leader, to Strawberry Days Volunteer and just about everything in between. Lauren said, “I’m grateful to be a part of this community. … I have enjoyed amazing community events and awesome community spirit. Because I enjoyed these events as a child, I was eager to get involved and share these experiences with others.” And that is exactly what she has done. Speaking of her leadership and service-minded attitude one of her advisors said, “I fully believe that she will be an asset to any group of which she will be part.”

Ella’s service came in a unique way. Her service includes many organizations, including Student Council and Lindon City Youth Court. The most impressive and unique service opportunity came when she took her love of science and used it as an opportunity to serve other kids. An example of her Science Demos is sandwiching an Lauren McArthur Ella Omdahl elementary school principal between a bed of nails and cinder blocks, and then having a child come and demolish the cinder black with a sledgehammer, all while keeping the principal safe! In demos like these, Ella helps kids see that learning can be fun, and sparks within them a love for Science and learning. One of her teachers said, “Ella is a great leader who puts 110% into everything she does. She has a great attitude, works well with others, and is very conscientious of other people’s feelings.” Thank you to the hundreds of applicants for their dedicated service in making our city one of the very best.

Strawberry Days

strawberry days history

a brief history of strawberry days By Mary Burgin

I

n 1921, a group of community leaders in Pleasant Grove began to plan a community celebration. Due to the fine production of strawberries in the community, it was decided that the celebration would be called Strawberry Days. The first year of the celebration was a huge success, swelling the population of the city. It was decided to continue the event due to the great fun it provided as well as the economic boost to the city and the local merchants. Over the years, a Miss Pleasant Grove contest was included as well as a parade, carnival, rodeo, and many other great activities. Many families have looked forward to having their annual family reunion during the event. Residents were proud to show off their town to visitors. Over the years, it has become the longest continuous celebration in the state.

The Pleasant Grove City Police Honorary Colonels are raising funds to cover the costs of a K9 for PG City. All costs will be covered through sponsorships for the Car Show and Golf Tournament, donation tickets and silent auction, and cash donations from the public and companies to purchase a new K9, equipment, training, medical care, food, etc. A second K9 will be purchased by the Honorary Colonels in 2020, so PG will have full time K9 service, costing about $20,000 more. dr. linebaugh helps start pleasant grove rodeo tradition

M

any of you longtime Pleasant Grove residents may remember Dr. Linebaugh, but did you know that Dr. Linebaugh is the reason we have the rodeo grounds where the Strawberry Days Rodeo is held every year? Dr. B.C. Linebaugh loved his horses (especially his race horses) and it was his dream to see a racetrack in Pleasant Grove. In July of 1946, Dr. Linebaugh and his wife Reva donated eight acres to the Pleasant Grove Riding Club with the hope that they would build a racetrack. It was later decided that this land would be used as the rodeo grounds (because of gambling laws). Here’s a little more about Dr. Linebaugh and his family: In 1920, Dr. Linebaugh moved his family to Pleasant Grove and purchased his soft rock home (the home next to what is now the Bungalow Reception Center). The home was already equipped with an office in the basement, which is where Dr. Linebaugh set up shop. Dr. Linebaugh is remembered for his many years of service to the residents of Pleasant Grove both as physician and as a member of the city council for eight years. People speak fondly of his house visits and his cough syrup. They also remember the long needle/syringe he carried in his big black bag. Dr. Linebaugh had five children - Jewel, Glade, Cassaline, Kayle and Lecta - with his first wife, Myrtle Barnes, and raised them in Moroni. After his first wife passed, he married a Pleasant Grove woman by the name of Reva Olive Jense. They had five children who were all raised

56

in Pleasant Grove. Many of you may remember the three J’s, John, Jane and Jean, and their younger siblings Paul and Truma. Dr. Linebaugh’s children remember that their dad knew a good horse when he saw one. They also remember their father raising registered Hereford cattle. He would show the bulls and heifers at the state fair almost every year, and he won the Grand Champion Bull at the Utah State Fair in 1924. The land that is now designated for the rodeo grounds used to be pasture land for his cattle. Dr. Linebaugh’s (still living) children John Linebaugh, Jane Robinson, Jean Bone and Truma Harding are grateful that their father could be honored for donating this land to the city and are proud that his love for horses and livestock can live on each year as the Strawberry Days Rodeo carries on this great tradition for the residents of Pleasant Grove. www.strawberrydays.org

O

livia was born and raised right here in Pleasant Grove, Utah and is the 17 year old daughter of Jared and Jana Lindstrom. She currently attends Pleasant Grove High School as is absolutely thrilled to start her senior year this fall. Due to her love of all things social, as well as a passion for learning, Olivia has been very involved in school. She was a member of her high school Drill team - the Vikettes - her freshman and sophomore year, as well as FFA Future Farmers of America - her sophomore year. Olivia has been very heavily involved in art classes as well as American Sign Language. She is also super excited to serve her school for the next year as a cabinet member of PGHS’s student council. Olivia plans to attend UVU following high school after returning from serving as a missionary for The Church Of Jesus Christ Of Latter-day Saints. Some of her outside hobbies, other than horse riding, are learning musical instruments, painting, anything involving the outdoors, and watching Judge Judy and Dr Phil with her mom. Olivia has been mastering piano for the past 10 years and has spent the previous year learning the guitar and taking vocal lessons. Music has always been one of Olivia’s strengths. She loves being involved in music and sharing that talent with those around her. But when she’s not busy doing school related activities or outside hobbies, Olivia is always found spending time with her horse. Whether it’s a trail ride, teaching lessons, giving him - her horse - a bath, or just riding for fun, the barn is a second home for Olivia. Olivia has been riding since she was 10 and teaching lessons for the past 2 years. She was also involved in her first rodeo royalty last year as the 2018-2019 Lindon Days 2nd Attendant. Olivia loves the joy and relief that horses provide. She enjoys sharing that love and that passion with those around her. Olivia is more than thrilled to represent Strawberry Days Rodeo as the 2019-2020 Queen. She would like to thank everyone that has helped her become who she is, but especially her parents. “Couldn’t have done it without you mom!” Olivia would also like to thank her coach, JoDee Mickelson, for inspiring her to reach for her dreams and become the horsewoman she dreamed of as a little girl. Lastly, Olivia would like to thank the amazing city of Pleasant Grove and its community for providing a place she loves so much. She is excited to jump in and serve the community while getting to know the people better!

She will be graduating from Lone Peak High school this month, receiving her Associates Certificate in Child Development, and plans to attend Utah Valley University this fall to pursue elementary education. Izzy is very grateful for the years she has been a part of her equine 4-H club as vice president, president, and this year as a leader. She loves showing and training horses, and above all, sharing her passion for the western way of life with all the amazing members of her 4-H family. When Izzy is not at the barn she enjoys running, hiking with her dogs, camping, and spending countless hours as a nanny to her “kiddos.” One of her greatest joys in life is being able to teach horseback riding lessons because it combines her two passions in

She was able to move Oakley Utah her senior year of High School. She then graduated early from North Summit High School. Shyanne has been a part of 4H and rodeo her entire life. Shyanne was able to qualify to be the runner up for state 4H for horsemanship and showmanship. She has been doing Rodeo Queening since she was 8 years old. In her first contest she was able to win Miss Congeniality. After the first contest Shyanne was in love with Rodeo Queening. Shyanne has been lucky with the titles she has won, though most of them have been small town contests from the Uintah Basin she worked hard to be the representative the rodeos needed. She has held titles from Neola, Altamont, and Duchesne. After competing in most all of the small town titles Shyanne wanted to challenge herself with a PRCA title so she decided to go for Strawberry Days Rodeo Royalty. Shyanne has been blessed with a wonderful mother and grandparents that have supported her through the years. She wishes to thank all of the people who have helped her grow into the young woman she is today. Thank you for all of the support through this year and years to come. www.strawberrydays.org

bareback riding

B

bareback riding & Bull Riding

Presented by: Rock Canyon Bank

areback riding is one of the most physically demanding events in rodeo. A bareback rider sits directly on a bucking horse with only his own “riggin” to hang on to. As the horse comes out of the chute, the cowboy’s feet must be above the break of the horse’s shoulders. He holds his feet up at least through the horse’s first move, usually a jump, then spurs the horse on each jump, matching the horse’s rhythm and showing control rather than flopping around. He may not touch the horse, his equipment or himself with his free hand. If the ride lasts eight seconds, two judges award up to 25 points each for the cowboy’s “exposure” to the strength of the horse and his spurring technique and up to 25 points each for the horse’s bucking strength and moves.

bull riding

ull riding is rodeo’s most dangerous event. In the chute, the bull rider settles on the bull’s back, wraps his braided rope around the bull’s girth, then loops the rope around his hand and back into his palm so he can grip it tightly. When he nods, the gate is opened and the bull lunges out of the chute. Spurring is optional – the primary goal for the cowboy is to stay on for eight seconds without touching himself, his equipment or the bull with his free hand. The cowboy will be scored highly for staying in the middle of the bull and in full control of the ride. If the ride lasts the required eight seconds, it is scored by two judges who assess difficulty (the bull’s spinning, jumping and kicking, lunging, rearing and dropping, and side-to-side motion) as well as the cowboy’s degree of control. Each judge awards up to 25 points for the cowboy’s performance and up to 25 points for the animal’s performance, for a Photo: James Fain potential of 100 points.

n rodeo’s classic event, the saddle bronc rider sits on a specialized saddle – it has no horn, and the stirrups are set forward. In the chute, the cowboy adjusts his grip on the rein and perhaps the horse’s position. When the gate opens, his boots must be above the breaks of the horse’s shoulders. After the horse’s first move, usually a jump, the cowboy begins spurring in long, smooth strokes in sync with the horse’s jumps – legs straight when the bronc comes down, toward the back of the saddle at the top of the jump. His only handhold is a six-foot braided rope; his free hand may not touch his equipment, his body or the horse. If the ride lasts the required eight seconds, it is scored by two judges – one on each side – who assess difficulty and control. Each judge awards up to 25 points for the cowboy’s performance and up to 25 points for the animal’s performance, for a potential of 100 points.

alf Roping, or Tie-Down Roping, is an authentic ranch chore and the oldest of rodeo’s timed events. To start this sprinting event, the tie-down roper and his horse back into the box; the cowboy carries a rope in one hand and a “piggin’ string” in his mouth. When the cowboy nods, the chute opens and the calf gets a head start. The cowboy throws a loop over its head; his horse stops and pulls the rope taut while the cowboy jumps off, dashes down the rope, lays the calf on the ground and uses the piggin’ string to tie any three of its legs together. Then he lifts his hands to show he is finished, and the field flag judge drops a flag to stop the clock. The horse is trained to keep the rope taut until the cowboy remounts and moves the horse toward the calf, giving the rope slack. If the calf ’s legs stay tied correctly for six seconds, it’s a qualified run and the time stands.

steer wrestling & barrel Racing

steer wrestling

S

Presented by: Creekside Mortgage

teer wrestling demands coordination between two mounted cowboys – the contestant and a hazer who controls the steer’s direction – and their horses. The cowboys back their horses into the box on each side of the steer. When the contestant nods, the chute gate opens and the steer gets a head start before the cowboys start to chase him. As the steer wrestler draws even, he dismounts from his horse, which is moving at perhaps 30 miles an hour. He grasps the steer’s horns and digs his boot heels into the dirt to slow down the 500- to 600-pound steer. Then he wrestles the steer onto its side; when all four legs point in the same direction, the clock stops. Times vary depending on the size of the arena.

barrel racing

B

Photo: James Fain

Presented by: Reams Gunnies

arrel racing is just that – a race against time in a cloverleaf pattern around three barrels set up in the arena. A rider can choose to begin the cloverleaf pattern to the right or left. The time begins when the horse and rider cross the predetermined start line and stops when they come back across the same line. Each run is timed to the hundredths of a second, making every fraction of a second count. (Starting in 2012, Canadian rodeos now time to the thousandth of a second.) Each tipped-over barrel adds a five-second penalty to the time. Although barrel racing is one of seven events common to many PRCA-sanctioned rodeos, it is administered by a separate organization, the Women’s Professional Rodeo Association. Photo: James Fain DA

chores. Team ropers work as partners: one header and one heeler who move in precise coordination. They and their horses start in the “box.” When the header nods, the chute gate opens and the steer gets a head start. The header throws the first loop, which must catch the steer’s head or horns, protected by a horn wrap. Then the header dallies – wraps his rope around his saddle horn – and moves his horse to pull the rope taut, changing the direction of the steer. That gives the heeler the opportunity to catch both of the steer’s hind legs with his own rope. Most heelers try to time their throws to catch the legs when they are in the air. After the catch, the heeler also dallies to stop the steer. When the ropes are taut and both horses face the steer, the time is recorded. about the prca

about the PRCA Rodeo

T

he Strawberry Days Rodeo is a PRCA-sanctioned rodeo. The Professional Rodeo Cowboys Association, headquartered in Colorado Springs, Colorado, is the largest and oldest rodeo-sanctioning body in the world. The recognized leader in professional rodeo, the PRCA is committed to maintaining the highest standards in the industry in every area, from improving working conditions for contestants and monitoring livestock welfare to boosting entertainment value and promoting sponsors. The PRCA also proudly supports youth rodeo with educational camps and financial assistance to young standouts preparing to enter the professional ranks as well as supporting allied organizations such as Tough Enough to Wear Pink, Miss Rodeo America, the American Quarter Horse Association and the ProRodeo Hall of Fame. Annually, the PRCA sanctions about 600 of the most elite multiple-event rodeos on the continent in 39 states and three Canadian provinces – the cream of the crop among thousands of rodeo-related events that take place each year in North America. As a membership-driven organization, the PRCA works to ensure that every event it sanctions is managed with fairness and competence and that the livestock used is healthy and cared for to the highest standards. Unlike most other professional sports, where contestants are paid salaries regardless of how well they do at a particular competition, cowboys generally pay to enter each rodeo. If they place high enough to win money, they probably make a profit, but if they don’t, they’ve lost their entry fee and any travel expenses, so every entry is a gamble pitting the chance for loss and physical injury against the

chance for financial windfall and athletic glory. Also unlike most sanctioned professional sports, the hundreds of “playing fields” – rodeo arenas – of PRCA-sanctioned rodeos vary widely. The size, shape and perimeter of an arena as well as the chute configuration and whether it’s an indoor or outdoor facility all significantly affect times for timed events and, to a lesser extent, scores for roughstock events. The differences are so significant that some timedevent cowboys own different horses for different types of arenas. For that reason, the fairest way to measure cowboys’ success in competition across the varied settings is by earnings.

he Bar T Rodeo Company was founded in the Red Rocks of Moab, Utah, more than 60 years ago by Cowboy Hall of Famer D.A. Swanny Kerby and his wife Verda Kerby. Swanny Kerby brought some of the early rodeos to Utah and has continued to produce top quality PRCA rodeos all across the western United States, taking bucking stock to the first National Finals Rodeo in 1959 in Dallas, Texas, and every NFR since. Their son, Bud Kerby, and his wife Evelyn took the Bar T to the next level, making it a state icon and one of the top rodeo companies in the United States. Bud, a saddle bronc rider and pick up man, was highly respected as one of the best bucking horse men in the industry. He built a breeding program that today is one of the most sought-after horse herds in the world. Today, the Bar T Rodeo Company has been passed to the third generation and is owned by Jeff and Wendie Flitton along with their son Cody Flitton, a fourth-generation family member. The Bar T could not run and operate without the help of many family members including Evelyn Kerby, Sam and Kellie Addington, and Lori and Martin Pierce, who all love the family heritage and the sport of rodeo. The Bar T Rodeo family works hard maintaining the quality bucking horses and bucking bulls that the Bar T Rodeo has been known for. In 2011, Bar T Rodeo’s Fancy Pants won best saddle bronc of the Wrangler National Finals Rodeo as well as the 2012 Ram National Circuit Finals Rodeo Horse of the Year. Previous top stock awards have been awarded to bareback horse Alley Cat and saddlebronc horse Sparrow. In many years, they have won top stock awards for

the Wilderness Circuit. Bareback horse Bitter Robin, saddlebronc horse 8 Ball, and Bull-8 TopGun all won Animal of the Year at the 2011 Wilderness Circuit Finals Rodeo. In 2011, Bar T Rodeo came home with four go round buckles from the Wrangler National Finals Rodeo. Bar T Rodeo has been presented with the Remuda Award for best bucking horse breeding program two different times, first in 2006 and again in 2011. In 2002, Bar T Rodeo helped produce the first Olympic Rodeo in Farmington, Utah. Twelve years ago, Bud and Evelyn’s daughter Wendie and her husband Jeff Flitton started a bull breeding program. Several of the bulls they raised have been selected to go to the Wrangler National Finals Rodeo in Las Vegas, Nevada.

he color pink is not something you would associate with the tough sport of rodeo. However, breast cancer has touched the lives of many rodeo families. The Tough Enough to Wear Pink campaign was developed by Terry Wheatley, a breast cancer survivor, and Karl Stressman, director of special events for Wrangler. The Tough Enough to Wear Pink campaign debuted at the 2005 National Final Rodeo when one evening of competition was devoted to the cause. Cowboys and cowgirls were encouraged to wear pink to signify their support and sponsors made donations. The event became known as Pink Night. The Friday night performance of the Strawberry Days Rodeo is dedicated to the “Tough Enough to Wear Pink cause and rodeo organizers are committed to raise awareness of breast cancer research. Be sure to show your support and wear pink to the performance, Friday, June 21. www.strawberrydays.org

discovery park

rediscover discovery park

D

iscovery Park was originally constructed 23 years ago in May of 1996—an idea hatched by Mike Daniels which brought a local group of volunteers together to build a very unique playground at the time. As Discovery Park aged, it was time to Rediscovery Discovery Park. City Councilmember Eric Jensen started the idea of rebuilding the park and worked with some Pleasant Grove residents to start a Steering Committee to get the project off the ground. While many volunteers served on the Steering Committee over an 18 month period, Sabrina Beck oversaw the committee as the Chairwoman. This Steering Committee started the organization of the rebuild by having different sub-committees: Public Relations, Fundraising, Volunteers, Child Care, Food, Materials, Tools, and Machinery. This committee partnered with the Fredette Family Foundation, founded by former BYU basketball star Jimmer Fredette. The Foundation’s platform is “Choose Kindness,” an anti-bullying campaign to encourage kindness amongst people. doTERRA signed on as the main sponsor and was granted the naming rights to the new park: doTERRA Discovery Park. The Steering Committee met for months to prepare for the building of the new park. The rebuild of the park was going to be built by volunteers just like the original Discovery Park was done. The recruiting of volunteers to build the park was the critical function of the project. Child care and meals were provided to those volunteers working on the park so they would be able to take the time to do so. The Steering Committee spent many hours looking for funding for the project. The park was mainly funded by the doTERRA sponsorship, a TRCC grant from Utah County, the new Pleasant Grove CARE Tax and a generous anonymous donor. Funding was spent on the materials for the project and Leathers and Associates. Leathers was the company that designed the park and oversaw the construction. The old Discovery Park was torn down on Saturday, March 30, 2019. This was proceeded by an event called Mark the Park in which people could come and spray paint the park before it was torn down the next day. The demolition of the old park was tough to watch, but brought about a new opportunity for a new generation to create their legacy.

74

2019 Strawberry Days

The building of the new Discovery Park started on Friday, May 3, 2019 and went through Monday, May 13, 2019. Each day started at 6:30 am and finished at 9:30 pm. The construction was overseen by Leathers and Associates, but also was spearheaded by Captains. These Captains were on-site each day of the build for the whole day. The Captains consisted of the Pleasant Grove Parks Department, Bill Helton, Glenn Reedy, and Scotty White. During the build, over 3000 volunteers came to help build the new park. Some local businesses (doTERRA, Test Out, Keller Williams) brought over 100 volunteers for a particular shift. At night, the Pleasant Grove residents showed up in force to help with the project. Many came because they helped build the old park 23 years ago or they were a kid 23 years ago that enjoyed playing at the park and wanted to be a part of the new Park. The new doTERRA Discovery Park will open in early June 2019. The main features in the park include a space shuttle, volcano, and a rocket ship. There is fun for kids of all ages at the new park. Please come and check it out for yourselves. Come and see what the business and residential community of Pleasant Grove has put together for all to enjoy.

Thank you Pleasant Grove - #choosekindnesspg www.strawberrydays.org
