Fall brings a change of season which means shorter days and longer nights, cooler weather and children going back to school. It also brings the opportunity for those, of voting age, to cast their ballot on November 3 for city officials and a proposed transportation proposition (Proposition 1).

If you have been watching or reading the news, you have likely heard of HB (House Bill) 362. I’d like to share with you some information about this issue that will be on the ballot for Murray City residents. HB 362 is a bill that was sponsored by Rep. Johnny Anderson and Sen. Al Jackson, a comprehensive approach to addressing part of the funding shortfall for transportation. The bill reforms the state motor-fuel tax and authorizes a local option transportation sales tax to allow for priority investment in roads, transit and active transportation facilities.

On June 16, the Murray City Council passed a resolution encouraging the Salt Lake County Council to allow voters of Salt Lake County to vote on this Local Option General

Sales Tax. Then on August 4, the Salt Lake County Council approved a resolution allowing HB 362 to be on the November 2015 ballot.

The main provision of Proposition 1 is the Local Option Transportation Sales Tax where counties would be authorized to enact a 0.25% general sales tax for transportation (which would cost taxpayers one penny per $4). These funds would be allocated as follows: • 0.10% to Utah Transit Authority • 0.10% to Murray City • 0.05% to Salt Lake County If passed, Murray City has the potential of receiving over $1.5 million additional revenue per year to use towards our city’s transportation projects. The list below is an example of identified neighborhood projects that have been prioritized for repair through the next two years. The city has a projected Capital Maintenance list for an upcoming fiveyear period which totals over $10 million in repairs which can be greatly accelerated with this new revenue stream. Here are just a few: • Chevy Chase & Wesley Area, rebuild/overlay • 120 W., reconstruction

New Hillcrest Junior High Dedicated, Ready For Students

ore than 60 years have passed since Lloyd Naylor walked the halls of Hillcrest, then Murray High. Even though Naylor could have been sad to know it was the last time he was walking through the old school that evening in late June, he knew students were ready for the new Hillcrest Junior High.

“It was time to build a new school,” Naylor said, and added that once again he got lost in the dead-end corridors and endless stairs of his former school that was built in 1911 and had five building additions.

By Julie Slama There are some unique touches to the school. The concrete is seamless and stained royal blue to match school colors. “Hillcrest Gladiators” is included on the maple hardwood of the gymnasium floor. Skylights will give natural illumination to enclosed classrooms, while other rooms have LED lighting and energy-efficient windows. And, the school has geothermal sourcing which will allow a cost savings and more efficient way to heat and cool the new building, said Rock Boyer, Murray School District support services director.

Covington said that they will continue tested approaches and traditions, while implementing new educational opportunities with the resources that have been made available as the school opens this August for about 850 seventh-, eighth- and ninth-grade students.

“We also look forward to establishing new traditions. We look forward to promoting Gladiator Pride and to creating a culture where the students and faculty focus on taking care of themselves, taking care of each other, and taking care of our school,” she said.

Naylor, who was recognized Aug. 6 for his part on the Board of Education which voted to rebuild Hillcrest Junior High, came to the official dedication that hosted about 200 current and former students, faculty and staff, the principal, current and former Board of Education members and community and education leaders.

“These students didn’t get cheated. There are amazing possibilities here at this [new] school. The Murray community is a strong supporter of education,” Naylor said.

Guests could walk through the school to see its 40 classrooms with audio-visual enhancements, five science labs, practice rooms for band and choir, a media center with computer lab, a dance room, an exercise and weight room, a full-size gymnasium and a half-size gym, and an auditorium, which Murray City partnered with, that is both state-of-the-art and large enough to be used for community events.

Kendall Smith of Hughes General Contractors said that some features were among firsts for a school.

“We surpassed our expectations and foresee that others will walk through this school to see it as a model for others,” he said.

Principal Jennifer Covington thanked the former residents of Hillside Drive, who gave up their homes so they could be demolished for the setting of the new school; the taxpayers for passing the $33 million bond in 2012; and the architects and construction crews, who made the plans teachers and others created a reality for students.

“I am excited about this building filled with beautiful architecture,” she said. “But even more important than the brick and mortar that has gone into this building are the people who will come into this school and how we take care of it. It is truly the faculty, staff and students who will make it come alive.”

District Superintendent Steve Hirase also thanked those who sacrificed their homes, those who served on the Board of Education, those who helped from passing the school bond to those who partnered with the district to make the school a reality.

Hirase began his remarks by saying, “And suddenly you know…It’s time to start something new and trust the magic of beginning’s end.” He then told students that it is their accomplishments that will define the legacy of what the school will become.

“As we assemble in the commons area, you see the words, ‘Take Care of Yourself, Take Care of Others, and Take Care of the School,’” he said. “It lies within each student to make sure that they live these words and as they do so, it will be these actions that will create the magic that will be felt within these walls.”

“I told him there was no reasonable way,” Wentworth said. “There is some land higher on State Street and some lower on 53rd, and more stairs in that building than any other building on the planet.”

Still, Wentworth said Tranter wouldn’t take no for an answer and asked if it was possible to combine part of the site with Hillside Drive.

“My first response was, ‘Are you crazy?’

Then, we did a study for the building and it’s the footprint where we’re all sitting now,” he said.

Tranter, who was on hand at the dedication, said that Naylor Wentworth Lund Architects and Hughes Construction took to heart the important factors of the school and made it a reality, all while coming in under budget.

“There is smart technology everywhere, from the sprinkler system to wireless hubs where students can connect to the Internet everywhere, not just in the four computer labs,”

he said. “It’s really, really a great junior high.”

The former Hillcrest was too old for any technology upgrades and posed safety concerns, since parts of it were not accessible for students in wheelchairs.

Tranter will oversee a historical wall in the new school, which will showcase bricks from the original building, old plaques and pictures, and other memorabilia.

Board of Education chair Mitzie Huff dedicated the new school building “as an education institution for the students who will attend here and for all the members of the community. It is the sincere desire of the Board of Education that all students who attend Hillcrest Junior High will experience true success in all their educational endeavors.”

She also recognized the former school, which will be torn down this fall, making the land available for leasing, and how that building holds fond memories for many Murray students.

“It’s hard to watch the old building go down and old memories fade, but in our hearts, they’ll always be there,” she said. l

Passion And Produce

F

rom kale and cucumber to free roaming eggs and goat cheese, the famers market is not just a place for food: it’s a place for passion.

Adam and Dianna Diehl, of Adams Heirlooms, are passionate about food history. They grow and sell only heirloom and antique varieties of fruits and vegetables at the farmers market.

“Heirlooms are a tie to the past, to those who have gone before us. There is something special about eating the same varieties that were available to your great-great grandparents.” Dianna said.

The Diehls use unproductive urban properties to grown their organic produce. They improve the land they farm, let the landowners eat what they can and take the excess to market.

Most landowners the Diehl’s work with are

senior citizens who appreciate not only the produce and labor done for them, but the daily visits made by Adam as he weeds and waters.

From July 26 to Oct. 26, Murray City has a farmers market at Murray Park. There you can find many who are passionate not just about growing good food, but about eating it. Aurora and Samuel Hansen were ecstatic about their experience at the Murray market.

“We came with only three dollars in cash and left with two days worth of food. I’m from Peru and buying at the market and bargaining reminds me of home,” Aurora said.

“We live in Sandy by a Whole Foods, but we like to come here because it sure beats their prices,” Samuel said.

Fresh fruit seemed to be what lured most market goers, but for others it was the simple call of community. Whether you come for peaches or passion, there is something wonderful about a farmers market: you feel more grounded to the earth and community, you’re able to meet the farmers that grow your food, you can ask them what makes their produce taste so good and see for yourself the pride they have in growing it. l

A

painter has its color, a poet its words and a dancer its body. With air for its canvas, a dancer draws with movement. And, unlike paint or print which survives in ink and oil, dance vanishes after its fruition; perhaps that is the beauty of it.

You don’t have to be an expert to dance; untaught, it emerges nodding and bobbing, swaying and squatting as an infant. Despite its natural development, dance tends to vanish inside us with age and self-consciousness, but not so in a plucky group of senior citizens at the L. Clark Cushing Heritage Center.

Each Thursday night, over 80 of those spirited seniors get together to listen to the music of Tony Summerhays and do what they love most: dance. Tony Summerhays has been performing at the Heritage Center for what the dancers call forever, and they love him. He dresses up in holiday-themed costumes, takes pictures with the crowd and knows people, and their favorite songs, by name.

“Tony is the best. I love the live music and he plays the good old timey stuff,” Louie Fisher said.

Fisher has been dancing at the Heritage Center for over 15 years, accompanied by her partner and best friend, Burns Jowers.

When you enter the dance hall at the Heritage Center and see the glittering dresses, twirling heads of gray hair and slow shuffles of feet, you can’t help but be delighted. Frank Tidwell and Margie Hoyt were among the many partners on the dance floor; even after a fall, Tidwell was back on his feet, proving you are never too old to dance.

Also making that point was a 101-yearold man who twirled his partner, albeit slowly, across the dance floor. In comparison, Frank Rehling, age 93, was a youngster. He showed off his wife Shirley who, like himself that night, was dressed to the nines – proof that

Despite the mature crowd, the atmosphere was fresh and youthful. The air of high school wasn’t far away, as you watched youngat-heart girls sitting on the sidelines hoping to be asked to dance. People from all over the valley come to Murray for the chance to dance.

As Arts in the Park Winds Down Season, Shows Remain

ith a few weeks left Murray City’s Arts in the Park season, professional-level productions await audiences.

The musicians and performers have been paid for their craft, said Mary Ann Kirk, Arts in the Park director.

“It’s nice that it’s local and they are able to support their own community,” Kirk said.

“It’s a great opportunity for parents to expose their kids to the arts at an affordable price.

It’s pretty amazing what they can enjoy in their community.”

One will be Mobility at Murray Ampitheater. It is a popular music ensemble of the U.S. Air Force Band of the Golden West. It has shared the stage with notable acts like Kelly Clarkson and the Beach Boys. Its accolades include Emmy nominations.

The Wasatch Jazz Project will play at the Murray Heritage Senior Center. The highly-respected ensemble is a 19-piece swing band – a full-size dance band – that is quite popular, Kirk said.

Kirk pointed to “Annie Get Your Gun” and “Camelot” as examples of previous high-profile performances this summer.

“Camelot” was directed by veteran Jim Smith. Its cast has routinely been seen at Hale Center Theater. Some cast members have even been plucked from Arts in the Park productions.

“Salt Lake Community College took part of our cast – they took our Daddy Warbucks,” Kirk said.

“Annie Get Your Gun” literally played all around the audience. Like Epic Theater, the audience is fully aware that the characters know they are in a play. “Annie” shows, in this era of feminism, that Annie Oakley paved the way for what a woman really was in an age when The West was won – usually by males.

And it just featured some of the finest actors in the valley.

Those are Rick Kimball’s reasons for what made it such a standout.

“I really try to make every production I direct unique in some way,” said Kimball, a lecturer at Salt Lake Community College who has directed dozens of productions.

In Kimball’s performance, the actors sat in the audience during the show as the audience became the townsfolk. It stood out in an era of

Never mind that the cast and crew themselves couldn’t escape from the reality of putting on a production of a program that has been lauded online. About 40 cast members and 10 crew members were involved, with 180 hours of rehearsal, 25 hours of set design, and about 40 additional hours to get together all necessary materials. Cast members ranged from 7 years old to 76.

City Signs Fire Rehab Agreement; Residents Ask for Prevention Measures

T

he recent grass fire along Jordan River Parkway in Murray came within about 20 feet of burning down the adjacent Aberdeen townhome neighborhood. As Murray City works to mitigate the damage, local residents with vivid memories of their homes nearly being destroyed are asking for measures to make sure the same thing doesn’t happen again.

Just 20 feet, a distance easily covered in six or seven casual paces, was all that separated lives and homes from the flames.

The fire started around 6:30 p.m. on March 31, in the wetlands along the Jordan River Parkway near 4800 South. Firefighters were able to save every home through quick action. But, with the fire being so close to homes, it would have taken only an ounce of bad luck for the homes to have been lost or for residents to have been injured.

The fire melted the vinyl fence separating the townhome property from the grassy, Murray City-owned property along the parkway.

Also destroyed in the fire were a cell tower and portions of the boardwalk crossing the wetlands. The fence and boardwalk have since been repaired.

Authorities quickly apprehended a juvenile suspected of starting the fire.

In its July 7 meeting, the Murray City Council approved an agreement with the Utah Division of Forestry, Fire and State Lands, providing funding to restore the property. The agreement states that the state agency will provide up to $20,000 in reimbursement funds to the city to remove hazardous trees, treat invasive vegetation and restore native vegetation in an effort to prevent future fire hazards.

For its part, the city is to provide labor for the project and acquire the necessary materials through its typical procurement process. Many local residents have already volunteered their time. The deadline for completing the work and receiving reimbursement is June 30, 2016.

Present at the July 7 council meeting were Jerry Budd, Peggy Call and Steve Madsen, representing the Aberdeen Homeowners Association. Each voiced deep appreciation for the work the firefighters did in saving their homes, as well as concern about making sure future fires are prevented.

As a follow up to a letter the association previously sent to the city, he requested a meeting with Mayor Ted Eyre, the city attorney, the fire and police departments, risk management and the city council to discuss what might be done to reduce fire risk.

Call, the association treasurer, said her biggest concern was protecting life and property. She said emergency responders were to be commended for their quick action and investigation, but felt that the homeowners association was having a difficult time continuing discussions with the city on fire prevention.

Madsen, the association vice president, also praised the emergency response. He point-

ed out the extreme danger of the situation, mentioning that a shift in the wind could easily have led to lost homes and lives.

“The fire department was pretty impressive in how they dealt with this,” Madsen said.

“We just don’t want this to happen again.”

He pointed out that the vegetation is already at a higher level than when the fire nearly destroyed his home.

As restoration efforts continue, the physical reminders of the fire are quickly fading.

These homeowners, however, won’t soon forget the wall of flames that came within what must have surely seemed like inches of destroying their homes and even claiming lives. l

Students will write the Veteran’s story and present their stories during the month of November (in honor of Veteran’s Day). We are looking for any Veterans from World War II, Korea, and Vietnam. Celebrate National Senior Center Month – 2015 Theme: “Celebrate Life at Your Senior Center!” Open House – Monday, September 14 at 5:00-8:00 pm. This year, Prevnar 13 (PCV13) is recommended for all seniors 65 of age and older that have not previously received this pneumococcal vaccination. You must bring your Medicare card (and have Part B) and photo ID. If you don’t have insurance, the regular shot is $35, High Dose $50, Pneumonia (PPSV 23) $90 and Prevnar 13 is $190. If you are interested in the Prevnar 13, please sign up for that at the front desk. No other flu shots need a sign up.

Toenail Clippings – Dr. Shelton, local Podiatrist, will be at the Center on Thursday, October 29 from 9:30 – 12:00 to provide toenail clippings and routine foot screenings. Pinochle – Wednesdays at 9:15. Players must check in no later than 9:00. The cost is $2 and is paid tournament day.

Bridge – Mondays from 11:00-2:00 is a teaching class taught by Carol Meyers. Come and learn or refresh old skills. Wednesdays and Fridays from 1:00-4:00, free informal Bridge play (Chicago/Party).

Canasta – Tuesdays from 11:00-2:30. Everyone is welcome (including beginners), all games are free and anyone can join in on the fun.

Stepping On – A new 8-week course from Wednesday, September 16 thru November 4 from 12:30-2:30. The Stepping On program addresses information regarding ways to reduce falls and at the same time increase self confidence in situations where you may be at risk of falling. Beginning Watercolor Class – A six-week Watercolor Class will start on Monday, September 21 and run through Monday, October 26. Class time is 9:00-12:00 and the cost is $30. John Fackrell will be the instructor. Students will learn the basic concepts and principles of watercolor by watching beginning level demonstrations and working on techniques featured in the demo. Medicare Presentation: New Retiree Class – On Tuesday, October 6 at 10:30, Salt Lake County Aging Services will be at the Center to present options on Medicare choices. Senior Learning Network – Through the wonders of technology (video conferencing), the Center will continue to offer special interactive presentations from around the country via the Senior Learning Network. Join us on Tuesday, September 15 at noon for “Answering the Call of a Nation” offered by the US Army Museum. The program will talk about how American women stepped forward during World War II to fill an array of jobs. On Thursday, September 24 at 11:30, the Amon Carter Museum of American Art presents “ Painters and Places” a virtual gallery tour and interactive discussion focusing on how Stuart Davis, Marden Harley, Georgia O’Keeffe and other well-known American artists of the early twentieth century were inspired by each other and their surroundings. Finally on Wednesday, October 14 at 12:30, the Minuteman Missile National Historic Site will give a tour of the remnants of the Cold War, the Minuteman Missiles which held the power to destroy civilization. Salt Lake County Moving Forward to Attract, Retain Conventions

R

ecently, I joined leaders from Visit Salt Lake and the Governor’s Office of Economic Development for an exciting announcement: organizers for Outdoor Retailer are extending their contracts with the Salt Palace Convention Center through 2018.

This is the largest summer and winter outdoor gear, apparel, accessories and technology tradeshow in the country. Outdoor Retailer has been here since 1996, except for 2002 when we hosted the Winter Olympics. Over time the winter and summer markets have grown to be the largest event hosted by the Salt Palace, with more than 6,000 specialty retailer attendees and exhibitors, drawing 15,000 additional visitors.

They fill our hotels and restaurants, rent cars and go shopping during their stay. The total economic impact to us is approximately $45 million annually. That boost to our budgets represents money that does not have to come from local residents and taxpayers, but rather represents a “bonus” for our bottom line.

Outdoor Retailer has become so successful that it has outgrown the exhibit and

local life meeting space available. We have been able to get creative by putting up large tents next to the Salt Palace, and to encourage hotels to move other proposed events around on the calendar to free up lodging. I was encouraged that when Outdoor Retailer surveyed its members about whether to stay in Salt Lake or look elsewhere, over two-thirds said they preferred to keep the show here.

Ultimately, the solution is to have more public meeting space and more hotel rooms.

That’s why I’ve been pushing hard to find a private company to build a convention head-

quarters hotel adjacent to the Salt Palace, and include 100,000 square feet of additional meeting space. In mid-August, I was forced to discontinue negotiations with Omni, which had responded to our hotel bid request last year, because the company asked for too much by way of public participation. Salt Lake County needs and wants a private hotel, but not at any cost. My job is to negotiate a fair deal with a private sector partner—fair to the company and fair to taxpayers.

the winter and summer markets, I’ll redouble my efforts to secure a private sector partner.

Soon, the county will have another request for bids out on the street. I believe we’ll have a private partner selected and a plan in the works within months. We know that having additional public meeting space as well as hundreds of rooms adjacent to the Salt Palace will be important not only to Outdoor Retailer, but to other prospective conventions who have told us that’s the only thing Salt Lake is missing to get their business.

For a lot of us here in Utah, getting outdoors isn’t just a pastime, it’s a way of life. It’s how we spend time with our friends and families and—increasingly—it’s how we make a living, as employees and business owners of outdoor equipment and supplies, and as a tourist destination. It’s a unique package as we promote Utah to convention planners and to visitors, as well as becoming an important sector of our economic growth and prosperity. l

C

onstruction crews were busy in Murray schools this summer as two elementaries were updated with seismic retrofitting, a junior high was updated with a new gymnasium floor and remodeling of its band room, and construction is nearing completion on three district buildings, all in addition to Hillcrest Junior High being completed.

As part of the $33 million bond Murray taxpayers passed in 2012, $4 million was earmarked for seismic retrofitting in school buildings. That, coupled with two FEMA grants of $1 million each, enabled six elementaries to be retrofitted, including McMillan and Parkside this summer, said Rock Boyer, Murray School District support services director.

“They’re a lot safer now and are structurally more sound now that the walls are shored up, so earthquake damage should be greatly reduced,” he said.

In early August, crews were finishing up and expected to be done by mid-month, with just two remaining elementaries, Horizon and Viewmont, left to be retrofitted in the district’s long-range plans.

At Riverview Junior High, a new gymnasium floor was put in after a steam boiler cracked and seeped water into the old floor over the winter break.

“It was gushing pretty hard,” Principal Jim Bouwman said. “I went in to play before the basketball team arrived and in the process, learned how to shut off the water, and with

Bouwman said that through insurance funds, the school now has upgraded hardwood that was climatized to the gymnasium before installation. The floor should be completed by mid-month.

Viewmont Elementary Students Take Leadership Role

F

ifteen Viewmont Elementary students gave up a couple hours of their summer break to meet with Principal Missy Hamilton to discuss what it means to be a Viewmont Eagle.

“We wanted them to identify with the school and create a motto and feel for their school, to have pride in it,” Hamilton, who is new to Viewmont this school year, said.

In August, the students examined the school’s eagle mascot and decided their eagle should represent themselves, be notable and full of pride. It shouldn’t be comical or scary, Hamilton said.

“They wanted a realistic eagle that shows they’re distinguished leaders and stand-up citizens. That will translate into positive behavior and how to behave not only in the classrooms, but in the hallways, at assemblies and on the playground,” she said.

The students also created an acronym from the word “eagle” to help guide the student body to success this year. The code will be recited with the morning announcements.

The “e” in eagle stands for “effort,” the “a” is for “acceptance,” “g” reminds students of their “goals,” the “l” is for “leaders,” the second “e” stands for “excellence,” and the “s” represents “stand up,” such as standing up for what is right.

The student leaders also plan to role play each letter at an opening school assembly, showing students appropriate behavior and building school spirit.

All students will have a chance to vote on a new school motto that the group brainstormed. They include: “We are Viewmont Elementary and you’re gonna see me soar;” “Viewmont Elementary: Just Do It;” “We are Viewmont Elementary and we can’t hide that eagle pride;” “Viewmont Eagles Fly High” and “Viewmont Elementary Eagles Ascending to Excellence.”

“We want to capture the idea of eagles and their pride, how we can band together and create a family. We want us all to be on the same page, moving forward as a community whether our efforts are in reading, math,

WIT Holds First Chess Tournament

he Wasatch Institute of Technology held its first chess tournament on Saturday, Aug. 15 for seventh- through 12th-grade students. Students needed to register, but there was no cost.

The five-round tournament began at 8:30 a.m., with check-in starting at 8 a.m. at the charter school, located at 120 W. Vine St.

“The risers dictated the room, so this way, we can better utilize the space. We made use of the storage units at the old Hillcrest Junior High, which were in better shape than ours, so we have shelving for our band instruments instead of having them piled up in the halls or in other rooms,” Bouwman said.

Also installed was an air conditioning unit from Hillcrest to keep the room cool.

“The students will find it much more user-friendly,” he said, adding that about 100 students participate in the instrumental programs.

Boyer added that the room will be better acoustically with the removal of the risers.

What many students won’t see are the major improvements set for the Murray School District office, information technology department, busing and warehouse services. Three new red brick buildings are underway at the corner of Vine Street and Commerce Drive.

A 18,500-square-foot busing garage will be home for the school bus fleet and will be completed this month. The 9,800-square-foot information technology department and warehouse will be completed mid-September and the new district office, with 22,500 square feet,

will be done this school year.

“We looked a while back and saw the land available and thought it would be advantageous if all the services were located together, and it would enhance what the district is able to do,” former Superintendent Richard Tranter said.

Boyer said that all three buildings are budgeted to build at a cost of $9 million, with $7 million in a release revenue bond and $2 million in capitol savings.

The maintenance and bus garage will not only house all 22 busses in a gated area, but will also have room for washing, repairing and maintenance of the buses and district trucks.

The information technology center will house administrative offices and technicians who can update and prepare computers for classrooms and labs and keep its land server secure. Within the building will be a walk-in refrigerator and freezer and dry food storage space for food services.

The final building to be completed will be a two-story school district office, which will continue to house the superintendent’s office, the business administrator’s office, student services, curriculum department, support services department and others who serve the district.

“There will be a bigger school board meeting room, which can be split into two separate rooms for trainings and conferences,” Boyer said. “It really will be beneficial to have all three buildings on the same block.” l

Murray Spartans Show Spark in the Preseason

Y

ou can hear the speakers bumping from the parking lot: the faint, upbeat base of Lupe Fiasco’s “Kick Push.” As you walk around the football bleachers at Murray High School, you notice the lush green AstroTurf, the cheerleading team practicing on the sidelines and nearly 50 Spartan football players running drills down the field. What you notice more than anything, however, is the energy.

The Murray High School football team started fall practice on August 3 and is already getting excited for their upcoming season.

“We’ve got an awesome group of hardworking guys,” Spartans head coach Mike Richmond said. “The energy and work ethic on this team is just great.”

With two-a-day practices beginning on Monday, Aug. 10, the players are just starting to warm up for the long season ahead. The Division 4A team will be playing a 10-game season with hopes of making it to the Utah State Championships.

“If we are able to stay healthy and in good condition, I think we’ve got a great chance at making it,” Richmond said.

Unfortunately, a few of the players are off to a rough start. In the first week of practice, the team has suffered the loss of three talented players due to injury: two athletes have torn their ACL and one player broke his ankle.

“These were two projected starters and a very talented junior,” Richmond said. “We lost some big contributors, but now we’ll play with a little chip on our shoulder. We’ll have to work harder and play smarter.”

Senior and team captain, Moses Taeoalii, can relate to the injured players. He tore his own ACL during the 2014 season, forcing him to the sidelines for most of year. Because he

couldn’t play, Taeoalii become more of a verbal leader, which, along with his leadership in the offseason and his hard work ethic, inspired his fellow teammates to vote him in as one of the team captains for the 2015 season.

Taeoalii wasn’t the only captain to be elected by the team.

Seniors Taylor Litson, Luke Shipley, McCade Adams, Zach Rose, Tim Nelson and Ephraim Cook will also be leading the Murray Spartans as team captains this season.

“We have a lot of inspiration and encouragement,” Taeoalii said. “Now that we have a steady coaching staff, our leadership is really great and we’re really bonding as a team.”

Team bonding and leadership is something that Richmond encourages and distills in all of his players. Throughout the entire year, the Spartans’ football team gives back to the community through services projects like cleaning the parkway.

“Giving back to the community is such an important thing,” Richmond said. “It teaches these kids that they’ve really got it good. I say, ‘School is first. Football is important, but giving back to the community is necessary.’”

Coach Richmond was recruited out of Fresno, Calif. to play quarterback for The University of Utah Utes from 19881991. Though he’s been a Salt Lake City resident for more than 18 years, he was particularly drawn to the Murray community and the love they have for football.

“The support we have from our community is outstanding,” Richmond said. “Our coaching staff and members of the area make so many sacrifices to support us.”

He coached Murray City’s Spartans’ Sport Camp for years before being hired on as the Spartans’ head coach in 2011.

“Most of us have been playing for Mike since little league,”

Taeoalii said. “He has great leadership and has been a really good coach.”

The Spartans have about 50 players on both the sophomore and varsity teams, leaving the Spartans with nearly 100 players and nothing to worry about in terms of numbers. What they lack, though, is depth.

“Our numbers are really decent this year, but our biggest challenge is going to be depth. It’s going to be key for us to create some depth this season,” Richmond said.

Team captains agree, but they are prepared to work as hard as they can both on and off the field.

“I think our advantage is that all of our players always give it 100 percent and has really hard work ethic,” Taeoalii said. “Our goal this year is to really grind it out and work hard.”

The Murray Spartans played their first conference game Friday, Aug. 21 at 7 p.m. The Varsity Team vs. Lehi game was held at Murray High School at 5440 State Street. l

Murray Spartans Girls Soccer Preview

H

ard work and positivity are the foundation for Murray High School’s girls soccer team. After three grueling tryout sessions over four days, 33 girls were chosen to represent Murray on the Spartans’ soccer team.

With more than 60 girls competing for a spot on the team, head coach Brady Smith and assistant coaches Matt Ostler, Ned Serale and Tod Bengtzon had a variety of skills and players to appoint for this year’s group.

“It’s been a three-year building process,” Smith said, “but we’ve got a really great group of girls this year.”

Smith, a Utah native, has been coaching the Murray girls soccer team since 2012. He was born and raised in the Cache Valley area and played midfield on the Westminster mens soccer team from 2000 to 2003. Smith has an extensive soccer background in the community and coached at West High School for four years before making the transition to Murray.

“I like the bigger community here,” Smith said. “We have a lot of great support.”

With the majority of the players entering their freshmen and sophomore years, the Spartans have a young team this season. However, both the coaching staff and the upperclassmen agree that the team is looking stronger than ever.

“We are a little deeper in depth this year,” Smith said.

“We are strong on offense and can score goals at any time, but our biggest challenge is defense. We really need some athletic enforcers.”

Though the team is young and the program is still building, the group’s positive attitude and hard-working mentality make them a threat for their 4A competitors, such as rival Olympus High School.

“Our group is meshing really well,” Senior Kara Harris said. “We are working hard and really enjoying playing soccer.

As upperclassmen we are trying to set a good example for the younger girls. We really want everyone to enjoy it and have fun.”

The group is already suffering some setbacks, however, in the form of injuries. Between shoulder injuries, ACL tears and broken ankles, the group has already lost several solid players.

“We have a pretty strong chance of making it to State,” Smith said. “Our group is extremely hardworking and positive.

We just have to stay healthy.”

Division 4A State Championships begin in late October. If the team qualifies, they will be battling it out in nearly 20 games this season. When considering the dedication and enthusiasm this group has for soccer, the possibility of them making it to State is very strong.

“Our younger girls are really hard workers,” senior captain Lizzy Braby said. “They have really good touch on the ball and a really strong work ethic.”

Braby is one of just five seniors on this year’s team and, along with being a role model for the underclassmen, she has outstanding leadership on the field. In 49 games, Braby has scored a total of 34 career goals. She recently secured a scholarship to play on the BYU womens soccer team in 2016 and

U.S. News Includes Four Intermountain Hospitals in 2015 Ranking of Utah’s Best Hospitals

Intermountain Medical Center tied for the No. 1 ranking in Utah with University of Utah Hospital. U.S. News completed its top five list of Utah’s best hospitals with Intermountain’s LDS Hospital, McKay-Dee Hospital in Ogden, and Utah Valley Regional Medical Center in Provo, which all tied for third place.

very summer vacation I ever had ended with the terrifying fear of going back to school. There’s even a name for that fear: didaskaleinophobia—because nothing describes the fear of school so aptly as a word you will never be able to pronounce or spell.

My fears in elementary school included being in a class without my best friend, finding out I wasn’t smart, having a mean teacher and being forced to eat everything on my lunch tray. (The fear of school lunch is a whole different topic.)

Boys were also a great fear. They were unpredictable, incomprehensible, disgusting show-offs—and that was on a good day. I continue to be afraid of earthworms after a stupid boy in first grade threw a handful down my shirt. I screamed for 23 minutes straight.

As I got older, my fears increased exponentially. Entering junior high was akin to walking into the Roman Colosseum to face a hungry lion. A lion who had better hair than I did.

And no pimples.

Seventh grade was the year of deodorant, showering at school, Clearasil and the ever mysterious feminine hygiene products no one talked about. The anxiety of reeking with body odor sent me into a Love’s Baby Soft addiction. Even now, that scent reminds me of junior high locker rooms.

Getting lost at school was a huge worry, as was finding and opening my locker. I would often scamper from class to class with my head down, clutching six textbooks across my chest because I couldn’t find my locker.

Increasing my fear of lockers, one afternoon my boyfriend was standing next to me with his arm casually draped over my open locker (it looked so cool). Then I slammed the door, accidentally cutting off the top of his finger.

If you think it’s hard remembering a locker combination, try opening your locker when the boy you’re trying to impress is screaming and crying with his finger stuck in the door. He broke up with me soon after that.

Then there’s the primordial fear of not being cool. I’d be

in the hall when a group of older, popular kids walked by (for some reason, in slow motion). The girls laughed and casually tossed their spiral-permed tresses over their shoulders. To a seventh grader, the mature age of 15 was the epitome of awesomeness.

I stared dumbstruck, my mouth agape, displaying my uncool braces and wearing my first pair of Levi’s 501 button-fly jeans that my mom bought only after I convinced her I would NOT wear homemade clothes to junior high.

In one of the most misguided rebranding campaigns of all time, I decided junior high would be a great time to change my image. I tried swearing for the first time. It was cool. I was determined to reinvent myself as a rebel who drank Coke and said “damn.” For a 12-year-old Utah girl, that’s akin to being a homeless wino who juggles bunnies on a street corner.

But what scared me more than anything were the people who kept telling me that my school years would be the best time of my life.

It was paralyzing to think that avoiding bullies, flunking geometry, dealing with no self-esteem and eating Funyuns and Coke for lunch everyday would be the highlight of my time on this earth.

They were so wrong. There’s not enough money in the world to convince me to relive that hellish experience. For all you students facing these fears this year, trust me, it gets so much better. l
