local life Mayor’s Message It is a rare evening in our City Council meetings when we do not have several scouts in the audience. The City Council member conducting for the evening, asks each scout to stand, introduce themselves and their leaders, state their troop number and tell what merit badge they are working on. Most mention they are working on the Citizenship in

the Community merit badge.

It is exciting to have the scouts attend our meetings, learn about our form of government and hear some of the issues in the city. On the other hand, our community benefits so much from the service projects many of these young residents accomplish as they get older and more advanced in the scouting program.

I know there are countless Eagle Scout projects that happen in our community each year and I wish I could highlight each one and the good they provide for Murray City, here are just a few I’ve become aware of in past months.

In August, Samuel Lundberg, who lives in the Southwood Park area, organized a neighborhood meeting which was attended by over 100 residents in his area. He helped organize a Neighborhood Watch program where his neighbors will become active participants in helping fight crime.

The Boys & Girls Club in Murray dedicated a new garden area on September 1. Seth Staley, along with his scout troop, Healy Landscaping, Outback Trucking and American Stone, cleaned and landscaped an area by the Club to become the home of a bench to memorialize Micah Hansen, a very special 11-year-old boy, who died in a tragic drowning in April of 2014. Jenkins-Soffe Funeral Homes also helped with the coordination of this effort and gift.

This past October, four Eagle Scout candidates: Parker Cotrell, Josh Kaelberer, Jake Giauque and Brycen Bodily brought together groups of 10-30 people to plant trees and shrubs in the Nature Center area that was burned last spring. Each group was assigned a section of the burned area and a total of over 350 trees and shrubs were planted. The Murray Parks Department assisted with the project. The plants were purchased with a $20,000 grant received from the State of Utah Division of Forestry, Fire & State Lands. The service hours provided by the scouts and volunteers will be used as part of the labor match required for the grant.

Ben Beal will be completing his Eagle Scout project at the Murray Park Center on November 14 from 9 a.m. to 1 p.m. He is hosting a “Murray Marrow Day” where he hopes to gather information from over 500 people to the Match Registry, which is a nonprofit donor service that connects people who have Leukemia with a person who might be a stem cell match. If there is a successful match, a blood donation could help save their life. If you are interested in participating on the Match Registry, all it involves is a simple noninvasive cheek swab that takes less than five minutes. Qualified volunteers will be available to do the tests. I’d like to encourage you to stop by if possible and help with this worthy cause.

It is certainly a privilege to represent all the residents of Murray, young and old. I know there are innumerable acts of goodness that go on each day in our city. In this month of gratitude and thanksgiving, I’d like to thank you for your daily contributions in making this such a great place to live. In my opinion, Murray is truly “A City Without Equal.”

Christmas Tree Lighting Ceremony Looking for some community Christmas spirit? Then bundle up and join neighbors on the front lawn of Murray City Hall on Saturday, Dec. 6 at 6:00 p.m. for Murray’s annual Christmas tree lighting ceremony.

Whether they’ve been naughty or nice, bring little ones because Santa and Mrs. Claus will arrive by “Fire Engine Express” to magically light Murray’s newly-planted Christmas tree. After the ceremony, Santa and Mrs. Claus will warm up inside and meet with each child, give them a special treat and listen to their Christmas wish lists. Letters for Santa will also be collected at the event.

Come out and celebrate, spend time with friends, watch the lighting of the tree, enjoy music provided by the Hillcrest Jr. High School choir, under the direction of Krystin Elder, and share in some goodold community spirit under the light of a newly-lit Christmas tree.

Jim Brown is being honored as this month’s Jenkins-Soffe Hero. Jim has worked at Murray High School for 30 years.

He first started out as a custodian at Murray High, taking on other opportunities to fill in custodial jobs in other schools in the meantime. “I enjoy working for Murray high school,” says Jim. “I especially enjoy being around young people, and I hope they enjoy being around me.”

Jim is now the Assistant Head Custodian at Murray High, managing a staff of five total custodial workers. The custodial staff is responsible for performing custodial duties, minor maintenance and other miscellaneous duties in order to ensure that buildings and facilities are maintained in a healthy, safe and sanitary manner. Often this job is one that is overlooked, but behind the scenes it is what keeps everything running smoothly, and Jim is a large part of it all at Murray High. Jim grew up in Murray, actually graduating from Murray High School himself. “Some people think I am grumpy, but I am not,” says Jim. “I always try to help out anyone in need, and I do the best I can. I think the people who know me best would call me a good friend.”

Jim has 7 children of his own, 6 sons and one daughter.

His kids have given him 4 granddaughters and 1 grandson.

He relishes working with the Boy Scouts of America, and with the LDS ward scouts. He is a simple man who enjoys genealogy, camping, riding four-wheelers, and rooting for the Utah Utes. Thank you for your service, Jim!

More Than Just Miss Murray

icole Montgomery, an English teaching major at the University of Utah and daughter of Ed and Kristi Montgomery, was crowned Miss Murray 2016 on Sept. 5 at the Miss Murray Scholarship Pageant. Montgomery herself had reservations about pageantry.

“I wasn’t a pageant girl; I had the same reservations that many people have, which is that pageants are shallow and based solely on beauty,” Montgomery said. “I want people to know that every girl that goes on stage is well-accomplished, intelligent, inspiring and dedicated to her platform.”

Montgomery’s platform is, “Strong is the new skinny.” Helping to prevent eating disorders, Montgomery goes to junior highs and high schools and talks about the dangers of eating disorders.

“I chose this platform because so many women struggle with body image. I think women deserve to be told that being strong and beautiful is more than just skin deep,” she said.

Montgomery believes that being strong isn’t just physical: it’s emotional, spiritual, and intellectual, and by improving an individual’s self-esteem it will help not only that individual but also her community.

In the late 1970s, Rhea Kiissel started Murray’s formal pageants. Every year since then, the newly-crowned Miss Murray is sent to represent Murray City at the Miss Utah Scholarship Pageant. If she were to win, Montgomery has plans to continue her work.

Holding the title of Miss Murray is a lot of hard work, however “whether it was playing on the playground, reading books, or creating arts and crafts for kids, there wasn’t ever a moment I didn’t enjoy. I love children with all my heart and I found that in my best efforts to make a difference in their life, they changed mine,” Zullo said.

As the new year brings a change of title from Zullo to Montgomery, one thing will not change: a woman who holds that title with a focus, not on herself, but others. l

Zullo’s passion and platform in the pageant was, “Children Need Love.” Zullo wanted to make a difference in the lives of children.

Fifty-five Years of Shelter

omber and Boo Boo, Dexter and Duchess are four of the hundreds of animals at the Humane Society of Utah waiting to be adopted.

For 55 years, Murray’s Humane Society has provided shelter to cats, dogs, rabbits and other unwanted animals. On Sept. 12 they celebrated those 55 years with a birthday party and invited the city. All day people enjoyed free birthday cake, snow cones, games, tours of the shelter and even a one-day $55 adoption special for all dogs.

Jennifer and Johnny Evans took advantage of that adoption special. “We came today to adopt Ali,” Jennifer said as she held a shivering little Chihuahua in her arms. “I’m a truck driver and would like a companion.”

Johnny added, chuckling. “That is, if I can get her away from Jennifer.”

This year the Humane Society of Utah became the number one charity among all non-profit organizations in Utah, earning $41,161. That money came from donors, matching grants from local businesses and families and the Community Foundation of Utah. The Humane Society’s doors are open to any animal they can legally accept, so that money is greatly needed. In 2014 they saved a record 10,481 pets, and they expect that number to grow.

By Alisha Soeken Along with being a great charity, the Humane Society is also a great place to volunteer. Raquelle Privett, age nine and one of the over 1,400 volunteers, begged her mother to let her volunteer. “I love playing with the cats and rabbits,” Raquelle said. Because of her young age, Raquelle’s mother, Rebecca, accompanies her as she volunteers 1-2 hours a day cleaning and playing with the animals. As Raquelle held and brushed a blue-and-white cat named Densun, Rebecca added, “I love that this teaches Raquelle responsibility, that pets are hard work as well as fun.”

Jeff Gibbons, an employee at the Humane Society, understands that hard work. Gibbons got involved with the Humane Society while job hunting. “I thought this would be something to fill my time, but eventually I just quit turning in resumes because I finally found a job that I love. I deeply care about animals. I get to take animals that have not been treated well and give them a new home, where they can sleep on the couch, run in the park and do all the other great things pets do! My job every day is making sure that their life gets better because of me. It’s really hard work,” Gibbons said.

That hard work has a big payoff. The Humane Society works with smaller shelters across Utah and neighboring states to save animals

at risk of euthanasia by transferring them to their larger facility. It’s anticipated that over 3,500 animals will be saved in 2015. They also performed over 10,000 spay/neuter surgeries last year for both shelter animals and clientele from the general public, which will also reduce the risk of animal euthanasia.

Another hard-working part of the Humane Society is their foster department. There are over 150 foster volunteers who care for sick, injured or infant animals until they’re ready to be adopted. Last year more than 3,500 of these special-needs animals were cared for by the foster program.

Murray City has had the privileged of being home to this great organization, and, in the words of Gibbons, “It is an incredible experience to see animals get a chance to go to their forever homes to be loved. To see scared animals feel secure, and to see the joy in the eyes of both children and adults when they first meet, and then take home their new family mem-

ber.”

So, be a part of the Humane Society’s next 55 years; volunteer, foster a pet, donate or fulfill an item on their wish list, because Bomber and Boo Boo, Dexter and Duchess are waiting. l

Riverview Students Take Responsibility for Own Learning

I

n his 26th year of teaching, John McConnell wanted 26 of his eighth-grade integrated science students at Riverview Junior High to take ownership for their education.

“If the students are engaged in deciding how they’ll learn what they’ll learn, they take more responsibility for their education,” McConnell said. “They still follow the core curriculum from the state and they look at the learning outcomes, but how they are going to learn it and how they decide if they understand it is part of what they determine. This allows them to buy into their learning.”

Nicknamed the “ant hill” since they all work together, his third period class takes turns determining the lessons and experiments. McConnell picked this class because if they need additional time, they can continue during Plus Time, a class period where they can explore other subject areas after completing their assigned work.

Eighth grader Crista Peterson wasn’t sure of her teacher’s direction when he said they’d be in charge of their own learning.

“I thought he was kind of crazy because no other teacher has done anything like this before,” she said. “Working and communicating with others has worked very well, but really knowing what we need to know has been a bit of a challenge because we are still learning how to teach each other.”

Her classmate, Caleb Spjute, said that after realizing they had textbooks and other materials to help them, he got excited about the idea.

“I love the idea of teaching ourselves, but at first, it was frightening. I was nervous until the second week when I realized it would be amazing,” he said.

By Julie Slama On each topic covered in the curriculum and in the textbook, McConnell assigns five students to review the chapter and brainstorm lab ideas. For example, when they needed to learn about describing properties, the student leaders decided to make caramels and record their findings in their journals.

“They learned that each group stirred caramels differently, and depending on how much energy it took, they ended up either hard or really gooey. From that, they learned about energy in matter,” he said.

After the first month of school, eighth grader Alexis Zabriskie said students teaching each other has been working well.

“I like the idea a lot and felt like we would have more freedom — which we do, but I also felt like it would be a little chaotic, but it’s not at all,” she said. “I think a big thing that has worked well is trust. We all trust each other and they know that they can trust us.”

When introducing the topic of physical and chemical changes in late September, his students wanted to do a writing project. Through brainstorming and discussion, it was decided they would write and illustrate children’s books.

“I was excited because I like writing short stories for my siblings. I was excited to share it because I know students at Viewmont, because I visit every day after school and I went to Viewmont,” Caleb said.

Some students worked independently and some worked in pairs, but when they completed the assignment, there were more than 12 books that they then arranged to read to Viewmont Elementary School second graders.

and others. In each of the books, students needed to include six examples of physical changes, six examples of chemical changes and six differences of properties of matter. For example, in “Little Bo-Anna,” the student author wrote how Anna notices that when wood burns, it turns black and smoke rises from it, and when metal rusts, it turns a beautiful red.

Alexis wrote her story about her love of elephants.

“I think they enjoyed it a lot. I felt like they learned that science is everywhere and in lots of scenarios — not just during science time.

Everything we do involves science,” she said.

Crista and classmate Abby Smith wrote a story about a moose.

“We were just trying to think of a simple, but entertaining, way to teach kids about chemical and physical changes. I think they enjoyed the story a lot. They were a little confused on the physical and chemical changes, but thought it was a lot of fun to have us there,” she said.

Viewmont second-grade teacher Geri Smith said that physical and chemical changes are part of their core as well, so she thought this was a good match for her students.

“It’s fun to learn from the older students, and once they get past the initial meeting, they felt comfortable and there was lots of learning going on,” she said. “I expected students to get excited about learning the same science facts, but I was surprised when they came back and had embraced the literacy angle, saying how they learned anyone can be an author and write a story.”

Second grader Izic Copier learned this lesson when he told his teacher, “I learned that you can make any story that you want.”

His classmate, Graceie Mros, also liked

the idea of students becoming authors and illustrators.

“I learned that I’m going to create my own book when I’m older and make pretty art,” she said.

Second grader Savana Whitlock realized that everyone can read every story written, and classmate Kaitlyn Stout added, “even if you don’t like the story that you write, other people might like it.”

Smith and McConnell’s classes in the past have worked together studying rocks, since both eighth and second grade curriculums study them, and they have set a tentative date to do it again in April 2016, if the eighth graders decide to return.

“This worked so well. They can’t wait to go back; they’re giddy about it,” McConnell said.

Caleb agreed: “I want to teach the elementary school more when our class learns about rocks. I think we should teach them the types and layers and how they form when we learn that.”

Before they return to Viewmont, there will be additional instruction and labs that will be student-led, he said, adding that the next one will involve hot and cold water and graphing.

“I hope that after this year, they will go away knowing how to learn and be able to take charge of their own education,” McConnell said.

Alexis and her classmates already are grasping that.

“This class is awesome. We work together so well and get things done on time. We are like a well-oiled machine that, for the most part, runs really smoothly. I think it is simply amazing that [Mr. McConnell] can sit back and watch the class learn without him having to teach it,” she said.

Murray, Cottonwood Theatre Students to Perform Same Poppin’ Fun Musical

By Julie Slama When Bert begins with “Chim Chim Cheree” in the prologue, he shares, “Wind’s in the east, there’s a mist comin’ in; Like somethin’ is brewin’ and ‘bout to begin. Can’t put me finger on what lies in store, but I feel what’s to ‘appen all ‘appened before.”

Bert could be talking about students in the two Murray high schools, Murray High and Cottonwood High, both planning to perform in their own schools’ musicals of “Mary Poppins.”

Murray High students will take the stage at 7 p.m. from Thursday, Nov. 12 through Saturday, Nov.14, and again, Monday, Nov. 16, in the school auditorium, 5440 S. State St. Advanced seating tickets are available from cast members, and can also be purchased at lunchtime for $7 for adults and $6 for students and seniors. Tickets at the door will cost $8.

About 150 students will put on Cottonwood’s production that will be held at 7 p.m. from Thursday, Nov. 19 through Saturday, Nov. 21, and again, Monday, Nov. 22. Tickets are $8 for advanced general admission purchased on the school website, or $9 at the auditorium door of the school, located at 5715 South 1300 East. There will also be a noon matinee on Saturday, Nov. 21.

“This is a great opportunity to have a huge musical with more kids involved, and a little more spectacle than our more recent shows,” Murray High director Will Saxton said. “It’s also an ambitious technical challenge, with scenes constantly changing, costumes changing, Mary, Bert and the kids flying.

There’s a magical element with Mary Poppins and although it is a difficult production, we want our audience to see a great show and think it was easy to put on.”

Starring in the Murray High cast is senior Rheannon Longhurst, who plays Mary Poppins; junior Truman Schipper, who plays Bert; junior Klarissa Woodmansee, who plays Mrs. Banks; senior Braxton Burningham, who plays Mr. Banks; Hillcrest Junior High eighth grader Heather Bernstein, who plays Jane; and Riverview Junior High eighth grader Caleb Spjute, playing Michael. Choreography is coordinated by dance company advisor Leesa Lloyd, music direction is under Alan Scott and the band is directed by Rob Wilson.

Cottonwood’s director, Adam Wilkins, picked up the book “Mary Poppins” last summer “just on a whim when I was at an old bookstore, and I discovered there are deeper messages in it.”

“Mary Poppins is a story about a family, and the conflict comes from Mr. and Mrs. Banks not spending enough time with their children,” he said.

“The father is obsessed with his career, the mom is obsessed with her image and the kids just want time with them. In a day and age when we have every luxury in the world, the precious commodity we still crave is time with the family — to go fly a kite.

The father discovers through his kids how to be a father, and it made me think about the message and refocus on my own family.”

Part of what makes Wilkins excited about putting on “such an amazing show” is the music.

Woodstock Students Learn About Authors

By Julie Slama Many elementary school children across the Salt Lake Valley study master artists and try their hand at their art style and techniques.

Woodstock Elementary students not only Meet the Masters, but they Meet the Author as well.

Similar to the art program, parent volunteers spend time in the classroom each month teaching about a master, only in writing. The lesson may include the life of the author, a picture of the author, the style of writing and time period in which they lived and of the setting.

“The whole idea of the program is to get the students enthused about reading,” said Woodstock’s Meet the Author chairperson Jennifer Young. “The kids just get so excited and say, ‘Yes, we’re doing Meet the Author.’”

The authors for older grades may include international writer J.K. Rowling and national writer Dan Gutman, to local authors Shannon Hale and Brandon Mull. Younger grades enjoy learning about Eric Carle and Mo Williams.

“We may read a picture book to a younger class, or choose a chapter from a book for older grades to read to them. Then, we may play a game or do some activities to engage students,” Young said.

On Oct. 9, she read to the students from Rowling’s “Harry Potter and the Sorcerer’s Stone,” and then they made glasses out of pipe

cleaners to match the character of Harry. Another time, she encouraged students to create a spider and web with tempura paint and black construction paper to represent Charlotte in E.B. White’s “Charlotte’s Web.” “We don’t have a set formula of what needs

to happen, but we allow the creativity of parents to engage students, and some teachers work the lesson into their class,” she said.

The school librarians also support the program by displaying books by the authors studied each month, which are “quick to be

checked out,” Young said.

The program is part of Woodstock’s Parent-Teacher Association’s programming, which bought the program about 15 years ago with money raised from its popular read-a-thon fundraiser. l

2016 Budget Prioritizes Public Safety, Criminal Justice Reform

S

alt Lake County’s 1.1 million residents deserve a county government that steps up to the plate and confronts a serious criminal justice challenge. That’s what I’ve tried to do with my 2016 proposed budget. It is structurally balanced with existing revenues and it supports my belief in taking on tough issues and solving problems. This year, I have prioritized the county’s core responsibility – public safety.

We have a lot going for us. As a thriving metropolitan area, Salt Lake County is leading the way forward on economic growth and jobs, low taxes, cleaner air and quality education.

I share the positive view most residents have that Salt Lake County is a great place to raise a family, start a business and give something back to the community. However, we do face some challenges.

This year, due in part to the legislature’s passage of the Justice Reinvestment Initiative, sentencing for some drug crimes and other non-violent offenses will require jail time, rather than prison. That change took effect

Oct. 1. I support the reforms to our criminal justice system, but in the short term, this adds to the jail overcrowding without providing sufficient funding for much-needed jail diversion programs that provide sentencing alternatives, dealing with substance abuse and mental health issues. Also, without a Utah plan for Medicaid expansion, this amounts to an unfunded mandate on the counties.

Instead of just throwing up our hands, we’ve come up with a plan. Fully three fourths of the county’s general fund is taken up by the county’s criminal justice and human services investments. The jail and the District Attorney’s office are both experiencing a double digit increase in jail bookings and new criminal cases screened by law enforcement and that trajectory is continuing. We must pay for those immediate needs and at the same time, look for new ways to address the major causes of recidivism that just add to the problem.

My budget proposes that we continue a jail levy—passed by taxpayers in 1995 to build a new jail—and re-dedicate the approximately

$9.4 million annually to deal with increased crime while trying to stem the tide in the future. A portion of the money would be used to build a Community Corrections Center.

This secure treatment facility is a sentencing alternative to the jail. It would include space for intake efforts, behavioral health services, job counseling and other programs, within a secure environment. This will free up the “hard beds” for criminals who need to be kept away from society.

I’m convinced we can limit the number of new beds needed in the future, by funding some innovative programs that follow data and evidence to lower the recidivism rate, and prevent homeless individuals and those with mental illness and substance abuse issues from crowding the jail. Of 8,700 inmates released in 2011, nearly two-thirds were back in the jail within three years. In other words, they’re out just long enough to get into legal trouble again.

It’s a repeating loop that serves no one—not the victims of crime, not the police, not the prosecutors and not those cycling in and out

of the system, or their families.

How will we measure success? We’ll know we’ve succeeded when 1) we’ve put the criminals behind bars, 2) the homeless in housing, 3) substance abusers in treatment, and 4) children in school, through high school graduation.

Hoops 101 This is an introductory class to basketball as part of the Learn to Play sports program. The program features instruction emphasizing skill development set to the sport. We also have a new outdoor Pickleball court available during working hours with equipment that can be check-out at the front desk.

Line Dancing – Enjoy some great exercise, stimulate your brain, and meet friends; Tuesdays at 9:30 for all dancers and Tuesday afternoons at 2:00 for beginners. Cost is $1.50 and is paid the day of class and placed in the box on or near the stage. Shirlene Lundskog is our instructor. She dances with the Sandy Line Dance performing group.

Climbing the Peaks – The Center is pleased to welcome Carol Masheter back to speak on Tuesday, November 24 at 10:30. Carol will show pictures and share her experience of climbing Mt. Everest, the highest mountain in the world, at age 61 in 2008. She will explain why she made this climb, how she prepared for it, what the climb was like, and lessons learned from high altitude mountaineering. Register now for this free class.

Senior Learning Network – Through the wonders of technology (video conferencing), the Center will continue to offer special interactive presentations from around the country via the Senior Learning Network. Trips: Wendover – Travel to Wendover for the last trip of 2015, on Thursday, November 12, and enjoy a day at the Rainbow Casino. A chartered bus has been scheduled for the trip and the cost is $17 per person and includes transportation, a bonus package form the casino, a buffet luncheon, and free bingo on the bus. Depart the Center at 8:30 am and return at approximately 7:00 pm.

Utah Museum of Natural History – The Center bus will leave on Thursday, November 5 or Tuesday, November 17 at 11:00 for the Utah Museum of Natural History. Tooele Breakfast – The Center’s bus will head to the Tooele Senior Center for breakfast. The bus will depart at 9:00 on Wednesday, November 25 and return about noon. Cost is $6 for transportation and the breakfast. Sign up starting November 10.

Kingsbury Hall – The bus departs the Center for Kingsbury Hall on Friday, December 11 at 9:00 for the 10:00 performance of “A Christmas Gathering” featuring music, stories, and guest Irish dancers. Cost is $5 and sign-ups begin November 20.

December Light Trip – On Thursday, December 3 or Tuesday, December 8 the Center’s bus will travel to Thanksgiving Point and on Thursday, December 10 or Tuesday, December 15 we will travel to Spanish Fork. Pick the location and date that is best for you and sign up beginning November 18. (You may only sign up for one of the four trips). The bus will depart the Center at 4:00 pm for each trip and travel to Lehi (Thanksgiving Point) or Provo (Spanish Fork) for dinner at the Chuck-A-Rama. After dinner, you will be treated to a drive through the one-of-kind Holiday Lights at Thanksgiving Point, featuring more than a million lights all the snowmen, angels and reindeer or beautiful Canyon View Park at the mouth of Spanish Fork Canyon where you will view thousands of colored lights and dozens of illuminated structures – several of which are animated. Liberty Former Staff Member Returns as Interim Principal

ust weeks after the new school year began, Liberty principal Natalie Stouffer gave her two-week resignation, citing “personal reasons.” After serving just a few months more than a year, Stouffer said good-bye to school children on her last day, Sept. 18

Stouffer’s vacancy was filled days later on Sept. 21 after Murray School District superintendent Steve Hirase appointed former Liberty literacy specialist Jill Burnside to the interim principal position.

“There’s never any warning or good timing when people have to step down with personal issues,” he said. “We know that with Jill, she is familiar with the staff and students and programs, having been in the district office just the past year.

It’s the least disruptive to the students and she’s a high-quality educator with an administrative degree who understands the district’s goals and has the ability to relate to students and the skills to coach teachers.”

The job posting for Liberty principal will most likely open to candidates in 2016, Hirase said.

“The timing is good in the sense that we’ll have the opening posted early in the year so we can get good-quality candidates,” he said. “In the meantime, we’ll probably all pick up the pieces with additional hours to fill the void in the district office that Jill leaves.”

Burnside was excited to return to her former school.

“I love the kids and am excited to work with them to ensure the best possible education they can get and to help them be successful,” she said.

She plans to continue with the school goals of having good attendance and a deeper literacy ability that involves

more complex reading and writing skills. Burnside also wants to help teachers identify ways to help students who need additional help, or enrich those kids who already have gained the concepts and understanding.

The teachers also will be introducing technology programs such as iReady that accesses students’ abilities and provides individualized lessons on their level in math and reading.

“The teachers truly care about the students at Liberty.

They review their teaching instruction; they change and reflect to understand the best teaching methods for the kids. The entire Liberty community is fabulous, with the staff, support staff and teachers supporting the students and their families.

It’s a great opportunity for me to reconnect with everyone,” Burnside said.

Burnside received her bachelor’s degree in elementary education with a deaf education minor at Utah State University, then earned her master’s degree in administrative licensure from Southern Utah University. She also has her Utah educator license with English as a second language, as well as Level I and Level II endorsements.

She began her teaching career in Murray at Longview Elementary as a second-grade teacher, then worked at the school as a literacy specialist. She moved to Liberty as the school’s literacy specialist in 2009 and remained there until last year, when she took a position as Murray School District curriculum specialist.

She has received the Sam’s Club Teacher of the Year award, Longview Teacher of the Tear twice, and in 2013, the Pinnacle l Award from the Murray Education Foundation.

Murray High Students Begin Two-year Project House

hen Murray High construction management students put down their hammers in the spring of 2017, a three-bedroom home, complete with walk-in closets, a jetted bath tub, a kitchen with an island, cherry cabinets and walnut flooring, and an open living room with a fireplace will be built on a dirt lot on the corner of 700 West and Tripp Lane.

In September, 16 students, under the direction of skilled and technology education teacher Quinn Drury, began by having the basement dug; by mid-October, they were already framing the downstairs.

The 3,600-square foot house is part of Murray High’s construction management program, where students get hands-on experience from concrete and framing to finishing work, Drury said.

“These students are getting real-world experience from scheduling, estimating and sub-contracting, to learning how to build the home each step of the way,” he said.

Before students start with the project house, they must first complete at least one woodshop class. Then, once enrolled in the construction class, students study their textbook for basic knowledge and terminology before proceeding with each phase of building the home. There are classroom assignments that tie into the house project as well, Drury said.

By Julie Slama During the first year, students will work afternoons at the house structure, learning framing, cement work, flat work, roofing, windows, installing doors and drywall, painting, tiling, putting in hardwood floors and cabinets and other house construction. During the second year, students will learn finishing techniques.

During the two-year stint, students can put in as much as 1,000 hours into building the home, Drury said.

During that time, the students will earn 16 college credit hours as juniors and seniors through Salt Lake Community College’s concurrent enrollment program, as well as their high school credit, and can earn scholarships. Last year, all five seniors earned full-tuition scholarships, Drury said.

“Getting scholarships for these students is huge. They’re motivated and hard-working good students who have learned a lot of skills and can build a home from start to finish,” he said.

Students can also put their learned skills to the test through entering Skills USA competitions, Drury said. Traditionally, Murray High students do well regionally, as well as at state and nationals.

The students also learn to work with others, such as teaming up with Granite Technical Institute and SLCC for plumbing, electrical and cabinetry

work. Throughout the process, teachers watch closely. If something goes wrong, students re-do it, which provides a learning opportunity as well as a safety net.

The idea of students building a home began 22 years ago when then career and technical education director Clayne Poulsen introduced the concept and became a visionary of the program.

For the past 20 years, Drury has led the program.

However, he is quick to say that the program succeeds with both high school and Murray School District administration support.

Drury said that once students complete homes, they are sold and the money is rechanneled into buying property for future years of building more homes. Already, the district has approved funding for lots in Murray for the next three homes after the current one is completed.

Administrators and school board members also support students and come to their open house, when students lead visitors through the rambler that will also feature a full basement and three-car garage. They learn from students all about the home, from flatwork concrete, framing, footing and insulation, to tile and hardwood flooring, three-tone painting, railings and finish trim.

“The state recently released five-star jobs of the future in terms of high wages and high demand, and both construction management and construction supervisor were on the list. This is a great opportunity that Murray School District provides for students to learn first-hand about those careers,” he said.

This is the fourth home across from Riverview Junior High that Murray High students have built in recent years. l

Murray High Shakespeare Team Earns Superior Marks

T

he 17 members of Murray High’s Shakespearean ensemble got superior ratings from the Utah Shakespeare Competition for their re-enactments in the fifth act of “Richard III,” when the ghosts come back to haunt him.

The 39th annual Shakespeare Competition, hosted by the Utah Shakespeare Festival and Southern Utah University and held Oct. 1-3, allowed high school students from around the nation a chance to present material from Shakespearean literature in various artistic forms, and to be judged by professionals in their fields.

“We could pick from any Shakespeare piece for our ensemble, which needed at least four actors to perform the scene that was six to 10 minutes long,” Murray High theatre director Will Saxton said. “The judging focuses on the acting, not the scenery, costumes or props.”

In addition to the ensemble piece, Murray High students prepared three monologues from “Hamlet,” “Henry V” and “Merchant of Venice,” and two scenes from “Julius Caesar” and “Macbeth.”

There also were competitions for six Murray High Madrigals students, as well as in minstrel. All told, 20 Murray High students from the advanced theatre class participated

Murray Swim Team Starts Season Off With A Splash

he Utah High School Athletic Association officially began the 2015-2016 swimming season on Oct. 5 and already the Murray High School Swim Team is off to a strong start. Though many of the team’s 53 swimmers have been attending optional practices since Aug. 24, they’ve only recently begun mandatory practice.

Murray Spartans Set for Success as They Aim for State

W

ith only three regular matches left in competition, the Murray High School girls volleyball team is rounding out an almost perfect season. Their only loss came to Skyline in mid-September, but they’ve victoriously swept the eight other teams. If the team of 40 players can conquer a win during their second matchup against Skyline on Oct. 20 (after press deadline), they’ll be tied for first place in Region Six. “During the first day of the Skyline Tournament at the beginning of the season, we had some losses that we really just shouldn’t have had,” head coach Cheryl Jones said. “But the second day, we came back and won every game we played.”

Winning five straight matches during this pre-season competition set the tone the Spartan’s official season.

“Winning those matches really got the girls excited, because they realized we were beating teams that we lost to last year,” Jones said. “We were beating the same teams twice that beat us last year, and that was a highlight for the girls.”

Though the team dynamics and camaraderie have been outstanding this season, Jones faces the challenge of keeping everyone focused and motivated through the state champion-

ships. After playing for nearly three months, it’s not uncommon for players to get burned out toward the end of the season.

“We don’t practice on Saturdays because I figure the girls need a break,” Jones said. “But we do practice Monday through Friday starting at 3 p.m. and ending at 5:30 p.m. That is unless we have a game, which starts around 3:30 p.m. and doesn’t typically end until 8:30 p.m. or 9 p.m. So it’s really a full-time thing for them.”

Even with the season coming to an end, anyone who watches the girls play will immediately notice the energy and drive coming from the Spartan players. The group is constantly cheering, yelling, laughing and high-fiving, totally infusing the court with vivacity and team spirit.

“Our whole team has really great chemistry this year,” said junior Alarie Anderson.

“There’s no drama on the team like last year, and that really helps.”

The team’s camaraderie and motivation on the court is evident: players are constantly communicating with one another, supporting, encouraging and congratulating each other after every play.

“You can tell with how we play,” senior Allison Campbell said. “Just being friends, we can look at each other and know that they’ll get

the perfect pass that we need, or swing or set.”

Perhaps this deep-set friendship among the girls comes from practicing with each other virtually year round. Many girls play on the basketball team with one another, and several others are involved in volleyball clubs when the high school season isn’t in session.

“Being together most of the year helps us a lot,” Anderson said. “We know each other’s limits, and we can push each other. We know that if someone’s having a bad day, we can’t push them too far.”

While they respect the limits of their

teammates, the Spartans volleyball team knows what it’s going to take to beat Skyline and succeed in the state championships. They’ll need to push their physical boundaries, communicate flawlessly and keep the energy high throughout every match.

“I really think we’re going to do great,” Jones said. “There’s no reason why we shouldn’t.”

The State Championships are being held at the University of Utah and run Nov. 6 and 7. The team held their last home match against Judge Memorial on Oct. 27 at 6 p.m. l

By Sarah Almond When Mike Tidwell accepted the position as head football coach at Cottonwood High School in April 2015, he was determined to breathe life into a struggling football program.

As one of the top defensive coaches in the state, Coach Tidwell knew it might take a year or two of building the team and improving technique before the Colts could become division leaders.

Now, barely six months after taking the job, Coach Tidwell has helped several of his players receive offers to play at Pac-12 universities and has built a defensive line that’s ranked 16th in the state. The challenge he still faces, though? Numbers.

“When I took this position, I didn’t know the numbers were down. We only have 65 players,” Coach Tidwell said. “It’s hard to compete at the 5A level when we don’t have 5A numbers.

I need bodies – like, warm-blooded bodies.”

What’s worse, however, is the slew of injuries that have plagued this already small team.

The Colts’ starting quarterback broke his leg during the second game of the season, leaving the team with only one remaining player to fill the void. Concussions and sprains have benched other players, forcing Coach Tidwell to pull guys from the defensive line to cover offensive positions, and vice versa.

“It’s pretty tough,” senior captain Fua Pututau said. “We don’t have enough players, and

some of us have to play both ways, which is hard. But we’re pushing through.”

Pututau, one of the team’s three captains, has a bright football future ahead of him. With 10 offers from Pac-12 universities around the nation, Pututau is excited at the idea of playing at the collegiate level. He’s not alone, either. His brother, junior Taniela “Pookie” Pututau, has received four offers to play Division 1 football and his cousin, sophomore Tennessee Pututau, recently received an offer from Colorado University.

“My first goal is to grow numbers,” Tidwell said. “My other goal as a coach is to help get these guys beyond high school. I work really hard over the summer to build relationships with college coaches to get these kids on.”

Because of the relationships Coach Tidwell has developed and cultivated with college coaches over the year, they now come to him in hopes of getting leads on promising up-andcoming players. The incentive of potentially playing ball after high school has encouraged many young players to transfer to Cottonwood High School.

Even with a young group of players and several new guys joining the Colts, senior captain Fua Pututau is happy with the team’s changing dynamics.

“We’ve been getting along really well,”

Pututau said. “We’ve got quite a few players who transferred in and it’s been good. We get along well.”

Coach Tidwell agreed.

“We’ve got some spectacular talent this year,” Tidwell said. “We’ve really been able to hang our hat on our defense, and I think the young talent we have coming up is going to be really beneficial in the next few years.”

With several seniors moving on to play college football and a solid group of hard-working underclassmen strengthening the team, Tidwell is hopeful for the future of the Cottonwood High School football program. If the team can grow in numbers and gain depth throughout their defense, offense and special teams, there’s a good chance they’ll become one of the toughest contenders in the state of Utah.

The Cottonwood High Colts run nearly 20 plays in a row to practice endurance and train for fast-paced game scenarios. The team’s defensive line is ranked number 16 in the state.

Cottonwood High School Drill Team Gunning for Success

magine spending 16 to 20 hours a week spinning, leaping, splitting and lunging across a hard gymnasium floor. Then imagine coordinating and choreographing these spins, leaps, splits and lunges to match flawlessly with the moves of 23 other people. Put this routine to some upbeat music, and you’ll have the Cottonwood High School drill team, The Cottonwood Chaparrals.

The team of 24 girls has been practicing three and four days a week since Sept. 2, with two-a-days on Mondays, two-and-a-half-hour practices two or three days a week, and a fivehour practice on Saturday mornings.

“These girls have only been dancing together for a month, and other drill teams have been practicing since April or May,” head coach Kelsea Allen said. “So we’re having to play catch up to all the other teams.”

With competitions beginning the first weekend in December, the Cottonwood Chaparrals have less than a month to practice and polish three different regional routines: dance, military and character. In order to qualify for the state championships, the drill team will have to perform perfectly at the regional competition in January against division 5A powerhouses like Copper Hills, Brighton and Alta.

“Drill team is evolving right now,” Allen said. “Other teams have almost 40 dancers, and it’s like competition is becoming more focused on who has the most girls. So we’re a small team, but this group is literally the hardest working group of girls out there.”

Though the team held auditions on June 6, they didn’t start practicing as a group until the last week in August. Out of the 24 girls on the drill team this year, only one dancer, junior Sophie Ford, has been on the team previously.

“It’s been kind of a crisis year this year,”

Allen said. “There were a lot of undedicated girls on the team last year, and pretty much all of them no-showed at tryouts. We only had six girls who stayed on the team.”

Allen and fellow coach Erin Burk encouraged the remaining dancers to promote the drill program throughout Cottonwood High School. Their recruitment efforts brought nearly 30 girls to this year’s Chaparral tryouts.

“Most of these girls have never danced before,” Allen said. “Our team is mainly made up of freshmen and sophomores, with only five juniors and one senior. There are 23 girls that have never had experience in this sport before.”

Though the Cottonwood Chaparrals are using this year as a time to build and improve, the girls on the team are dedicated, hard working and determined to improve.

“We really push each other to be better,” junior Saumolia ‘Leah’ Geralds said, and fellow teammate Lauren Bradfield agreed.

“Dancing and drill is a competitive sport,” Bradfield said. “But we’re encouraged by each other because we see how hard everyone is working, and we know that it will pay off.”

Considering the group has only been practicing together for a month, the sense of sportsmanship and teamwork is undeniable.

“It’s a totally different team than last year,” junior captain, and only returning dancer, Sophie Ford said. “A lot of girls on the team last year didn’t take it seriously, and we had absolutely no sisterhood. But this year we all have a great bond and we support and encourage each other.”

Although this may be a building year for the young Cottonwood drill team, their dedication and drive for success shows promise for the years to come. l

The Gift of a Gift-less Holiday

t’s almost here: turkey time. I’ve always felt

that Thanksgiving gets cheated. Before Halloween is even over, the stores cram their holiday sections with Christmas displays and have stooped to bribery by bargain, in an effort to get you out spending dough before you’ve had time to digest your dinner rolls. Poor Thanksgiving: it gets skipped right over.

Thanksgiving is actually one of my favorite holidays. What other day of the year is it socially acceptable to stuff your face with potatoes covered in fat, yell at the television and sleep on the couch, all while enjoying the company of family and friends without the expectation of ANY GIFTS? Don’t misunderstand; I’m only a wee bit of a cheap, old scrooge. I love the light that shines in a child’s eyes when the jolly old man in a red velvet suit lands on the rooftop and sneaks a toy under the tree. Who can complain about a furry little barnyard animal that hides chocolate eggs under sofa cushions? But, it seems that entertaining kids with giving gifts is taking over our holidays.

Now we have creepy-looking elves wreaking havoc on the house and leaving daily surprises for an entire month. There are leprechauns that deliver gold coins. And, this year a Halloween witch has made her debut. She steals your candy in the darkness of night and leaves a gift in exchange.

What’s next: the 4th of July, gift-bearing Uncle Sam?

Volunteer: Skipping your own Thanksgiving meal and volunteering to serve up the chow at shelters like the Road Home or SL Mission is a great way to kick off the season of giving. t’s a time of natural selection. A season of mass hysteria. Wolves, disguised as sheep, travel in packs, attacking the weak, the inferior, the less adaptable. I’m not talking about the latest season of “The Walking Dead,”—but it’s close. I’m talking about the presidential campaign.

Next November we’ll be electing a new president, then we’ll spend 4-8 years slowly pecking him/her to death. And while the election is still a year away, I’m already tired of hearing campaign speeches, bloated promises and intolerant views.

Welcome to the Reality TV show political campaign landscape that’s a combination of “Survivor” and “Hell’s Kitchen.” I call it “American Idle: Washington, D.C.” Instead of selecting a world leader who won’t be ridiculed by the entire planet, we seem to be more focused on a celebridential popularity contest, electing a president who has the strongest handshake, the best suit or the whitest smile.

The fact that Donald Trump thinks he represents this country with his intolerant, puffy-haired self-importance and insane de-

tachment from reality makes the back of my neck itch. I could list some of the dumbest things Trump has said, but it would be outdated before my column would be published.

In a circus act of national proportions, the presidential candidates twist the issues with the help of our frenzied media who jump on every possibly scandalous topic like piranhas in a bloody river. We watch in horror as blooper reels blast through the Internet 24/7, and citizens become too fed-up (or lazy) to be educated about the real issues.

The constant pandering to minority/ women/young voters is nauseating and obnoxious. This pandermania has included Hilary Clinton appearing as a bartender on Saturday Night Live, and Trump interviewing himself on “The Tonight Show.” I’m still waiting for the “Chris Christie/Marco Rubio American Ninja Warrior Challenge.”

Candidates throw out terms like “equality” and “justice” in verbose sentences that make no sense, such as, “The idea of equal equality is mostly within our grasping fingers because justice.”

Backpedaling, recanting, denying and

contradicting are commonplace in modern elections. Candidates often appear on news shows explaining what they “meant” to say. It seems voters don’t even expect ethical behavior from the president-to-be. Voters are nothing if not irrational—which is fine, because the candidates are also irrational.

It’s no surprise there is big money behind each candidate. Political action committees (inexplicably deemed legal by the Supreme Court) literally purchase the new president. Millions of dollars are spent on TV ads, glossy mailings and social media campaigns, not to explain why you should vote for a candidate, but why you shouldn’t vote for their opponent. Mean-spirited, hateful speeches spew into the air, clouding the issues with their hazy pollution.

As the presidential race continues weaning out the unpopular and the less pretty (leaving the populace with a candidate most likely to pose for a selfie with Kanye West), voters become desperate, feeling their voices are not being heard.

It’s like watching a remake of the “Wizard of Oz” with Clinton trying to prove she has a heart, Trump trying to prove he has a brain and everyone else screeching and flapping like a barrel of flying monkeys. If we’re lucky, a house will fall on all of them.

There will definitely be a winner next November. I’m pretty sure it won’t be the voters. l
