CASEY HILDER
editor’s letter
May Flowers For those among us without the curse of springtime allergies, May is just about the best month to be outside. The blooming cascade of plant life in the Mid-South is truly a thing of beauty. And with Mother’s Day fast approaching, it might be pertinent to make a quick pit stop and grab an impromptu bouquet of ditch lilies. And speaking of special women in our lives... This month, Click celebrates six uniquely Southern women in business from all walks of life with a very special issue dedicated to spotlighting the best and brightest in the region. From CEOs and dealmakers to our gold medalist cover model, Rochelle Stevens, each one is a star in their own right. To see the full list, check out page 69. In addition, this month marks the return of our home living section with a charming Southern chateau located right off the banks of the Mississippi River (page 83). Special thanks to Jeff Edison for inviting us into his lovely home — I definitely picked up a few design tips from that one. If you’re seeking a cool refreshment, look no further than the perfectly muddled mixture on page 24, the “Black-beery Whiskey Smash.” And if that doesn’t quite sate your sweet tooth, take a look at Michelle Hope’s entertaining column this month — she’s mapped out a one-of-a-kind Sugar Shack Shindig perfect for the young and young at heart (page 89). For the musically inclined, we’ve got a bit of old school and a bit of new school this month with soulful Southaven native Kirby Lauryen (page 22) and seasoned symphony director Mei Ann Chen (page 20). So from all of us to all of you: Keep reading. And always remember, in the immortal words of Lawrence “Mr. T” Tureaud: Treat your mother right. Happy reading,

TB: Realize that success never occurs exactly how or when you want it to. Seek people that have accomplished what you are trying to do. Study them, learn from their mistakes if you can. Don’t be too hard on yourself. When you are chasing your dreams, you are bound to have a few setbacks here and there. Don’t be discouraged, it’s part of the process. CM: What can attendees expect from this year's Sisterhood Showcase? TB: To be empowered and entertained. My team and I have put so much into planning this year’s event, it’s going to be one for the books. CM: Planning the Sisterhood Showcase is a year-round affair for you. What is an average day like? I can honestly say no two days are the same. I could be planning a commercial shoot one day and then answering emails from sun up to sun down the next. I have grown quite used to hearing the words “ma’am, we have never done that before” and equally used to saying “okay, let’s figure it out!” If you had to choose a second career, what would it be? I would be a psychologist; I am fascinated by people. I am intrigued by what causes them to do things they do and what makes them tick.

Lauryen moved to Los Angeles to be closer to her publisher and the music scene. She admits that she always thought New York would be home, so L.A. was unexpected. “LA is a city where everyone has a talent, so you really have to be secure in your gift and your ability,” she adds. “If not, the amount of talent in the city alone can eat away your confidence.” Along with adjusting to new cities, there is also a shift in writing for oneself alongside

Lauryen has co-written that is she is most proud of is Kanye West’s “Only One”, which features former Beatles member Paul McCartney. The song references West’s wife and daughter. The moment had special significance to her, both as a writer and a longtime West fan. Lauryen compares writing a song someone else will sing to a form of servitude, one where she acts as vessel to say things the singer could not but wanted to. Writing for herself, she reasons, is more self-involved, akin to being her own therapist. Besides

The role took her back to her days to participating in Desoto Family Theatre in middle and high school. She says that she would love to go on Broadway and do more acting in the future. Now that “Loved by You” has been released, Lauryen plans on releasing more songs and hopes to tour this year. “I really believe music is a service, and it’s my job to serve the people, to give them songs to exercise to, do their makeup to, fall in love to, drive to work to, live to,” Lauryen says. “My job is to create music that makes your life easier, and love more tangible.” Click magazine | MAY 2016 23

navigating
Change is constant: times change, life circumstances change, relationships change. This evolution is inevitable throughout our lifetimes. However, our quality of life depends on our ability to embrace and navigate change.
“Navigating Change,” the theme for this year’s Sisterhood Showcase, is exactly what the Sisterhood Showcase must do as we embark upon our third decade. Launching the Sisterhood Showcase and building a strong, loyal constituency 20 years ago was not easy. It was fraught with skepticism and suspicion, challenge and controversy. But our work over the past two decades has driven us to transform a local entertaining and educational summit into a national platform to address issues important to women of color. The goal of the Sisterhood Showcase is to enlighten and empower women of color by providing them with tools and access to a wide range of resources to address obstacles that confront us on a daily basis. We’ve seen the good and the bad; the ups and the downs. But after 20 years, we are still standing strong and ready to embrace the

promise of tomorrow. We invite you to sample the future of the Sisterhood Showcase on Thursday, June 9 through Sunday, June 12. This power-packed event will be filled with empowering speakers, education, inspiration, rejuvenation and entertainment. Enjoy performances and appearances by Rhythm and Blues recording artists “Joe,” co-host of the Steve Harvey Morning Show, Shirley Strawberry, award-winning jazz gospel vocalist Kim Burrell, and native Memphian and Grammy Award-winning saxophonist Kirk Whalum. Without a doubt, this year’s Sisterhood Showcase will be the best one yet. Don’t miss this opportunity to change your life for the better. Join us for this year’s Sisterhood Showcase Expo at the Memphis Cook Convention Center in downtown Memphis. We’ll see you there.

Jill Morris
OWNER & INSTRUCTOR, STARS IN MOTION
HOW DID YOU GET STARTED IN DANCE? My mom introduced me to dance and music very early on. We were dancing in the kitchen to whatever came on the radio. Although she did not have formal training, she had a natural rhythm that she passed on to me. When I was three, she decided it was time for dance lessons so we enrolled at McMillan and Thompson dance school where she knew I would certainly be a star. Reality is that we both cried through the whole first lesson! But she encouraged me to keep going and I fell in love with all every style I tried. I continued lessons throughout my childhood and high school, adding in musical theater and dance team. Every free moment of my life as was occupied with some type of dance practice. And in all honesty it still is!
HOW DID YOU TURN YOUR PASSION INTO A BUSINESS? As I continued to explore dance in other parts of our region and across the country, I discovered that I had been less prepared than I could have been. I began to study the language and vocabulary associated with ballet as well as the physical aspect of dance. I have scoliosis and have practiced Pilates as a form of physical therapy since I was in sixth grade. Using what I had learned about my own body through that practice and all I knew about physics, I soon became very aware that dance is an applied science. I wanted to share that with the next generation that they might be better prepared for any type of movement. An opportunity to open a studio came about in 1997 and after much prayer, Stars In Motion was born.
WHAT’S YOUR DAY-TO-DAY LIKE? IS THERE A SUCH THING AS A REGULAR SCHEDULE? Every day is different. Every day is long. But every day is fun! The day begins with scripture and prayer and then I glance at my calendar. I teach fitness classes, Mom and Tot, and preschool classes during the daytime and begin dance classes each day
right after school, followed by more fitness classes and private lessons. I typically teach until around 9:00 or 9:30. Then I head into the office for administrative work, planning and marketing until 11 o' clock or so. With competitions, performances and added rehearsals, I typically work seven days a week. I'm a member of all the chambers, DeSoto County Business Women and attend DeSoto County Tourism Council; so I usually have a meeting or three each week. In the summer, we run camps and dance Intensives every week so the hours get longer and the work load increases. I take off a week in December, one week in July and two weeks in August. And I look forward to lunch with my husband, Mike, after church each week.
WHAT WOULD YOU BE DOING IF YOU WEREN'T DOING THIS? I can't imagine not teaching dance and fitness. But I do have other interests. I have two books that I'm working on. I also paint. I suppose I would work in marketing. I'm extremely grateful for all those who have put their trust in me over the past 20 years. Whatever the future holds, I intend to always give back to the community.
WHAT'S THE TOUGHEST PART OF BALLET? Making it look easy.
DO YOU HAVE ANY ADVICE TO YOUNG WOMEN WITH AN INTEREST IN YOUR FIELD? Take business classes. Be prepared to continue to learn throughout your career. Be open to the fact that you do not know everything, and when it comes to dance we really know very little as it continues to evolve. Stay true to yourself, go where the Lord leads you, take wise counsel, be honest, be nice, admit when you're wrong then work to make it right. Be prepared to face obstacles, fight for what you believe in, stick to your values.

Rochelle Stevens
GOLD MEDAL WINNER & OWNER OF ROCHELLE’S DAY SPA
HOW DID YOU FIND YOURSELF IN THE HEALTH AND WELLNESS FIELD? I have a sincere passion about being and staying healthy. As a retired athlete, it is exciting for me to help others look and feel good as gold. I thoroughly enjoyed French treatments, body wraps, and facials while training for the 1992 Summer Olympics in Barcelona, Spain.
WHAT WAS IT LIKE WINNING A GOLD MEDAL? I was truly excited with tears of joy about my childhood dream coming true at the 1996 Summer Olympics in Atlanta, Georgia.
AFTER TRAVELING THE WORLD COMPETING, WHY DID YOU RETURN TO MEMPHIS? Although I have traveled to more than 50 countries, there’s no place like home.
WHAT’S YOUR DAY-TO-DAY LIKE? DO YOU HAVE A REGULAR FITNESS REGIMEN? My training consisted of six hours, five or six days a week. My training consists of weight lifting, drills, techniques, long distance running, sprinting and visual sessions.
HOW WOULD YOU DESCRIBE YOUR SPA? Rochelle’s Health & Wellness is filled with serenity, soft lighting, and soothing sounds to help our clients relax and focus on destressing. We have helped thousands of clients with their weight loss goals and nutritional planning since 1998. Please share a little about the Rochelle Stevens Foundation and its role in the local community. Since, 1990 Rochelle Stevens Foundation has hosted an age group track meet for ages 2-75 years old. With an opportunity to compete in front of college coaches to earn a track and field scholarship. We give away spikes, tote bags, hats & tee shirts. We also offer “Achieving Dreams Scholarship,” Out Walk Obesity” and Family Health Fair.
DO YOU HAVE ANY ADVICE TO YOUNG WOMEN WITH AN INTEREST IN YOUR FIELD? Strive for excellence and always go for the Gold.
IF YOU HAD TO DO ANYTHING ELSE FOR A CAREER, WHAT WOULD IT BE? I enjoy working with people. I would love to host a television sports show or a sideline reporter at sporting events. In celebration of the 2016 Rio Olympics my autobiography “Travel The World By Foot” will be released June 2016.
WHAT WAS YOUR FIRST JOB LIKE? Competing as an athlete and being on contract was enjoyable, but at the same time it is stressful and for some reason you feel like you are missing out on all the fun. Like eating junk food, not exercising, going out late with your friends and family. Now that I am retired, I really didn’t miss anything.
WHAT’S THE MOST IMPORTANT THING YOU LEARNED SINCE STARTING YOUR OWN BUSINESS? Since I was my own agent I negotiated 35 corporate contracts, speaking engagements, celebrity appearances for myself. I was able to carry over my experience along with my B.S Degree in Telecommunications & Master’s Degree in Public Relations from Morgan State University & Columbus University. I truly understand the importance of customer service, marketing and setting personal goals for business and myself.
WHAT DO YOU THINK IS THE MOST IMPORTANT HEALTH ISSUE FACING AMERICANS TODAY? Obesity! It’s often the hidden secret that can lead to every health problem you can imagine.

Lori Brasfield Sanders OWNER, LOLA B BOUTIQUE
HOW DID YOU GET YOUR START? While completely immersed in my 20-plus year career in a maledominated field, I had the epiphany that DeSoto County needed a dress shop. What started as a creative outlet for me, turned in to so much more. I eventually left my corporate position to pursue Lola B full time. Having my experience and education in business, much of starting and running a company came second nature. The fashion industry dynamic and understanding this new market was a learning experience, and it still is!
WHAT’S YOUR DAY-TO-DAY LIKE? My primary goal with Lola B is to make sure every customer has wonderful experience. That means I am responsible for knowing the markets we serve, forecasting volume and buying the inventory, hiring and training a motivated (and mostly seasonal) staff, and creating an inviting shopping atmosphere. Financial planning is critical, because formal wear is seasonal and expensive! Having an interest in fashion or formal wear is only a small part of owning this business. Building relationships with clients and designers, financial planning and management, and training a seasonal staff in a short amount of time are my focuses every day. That means, many spreadsheets, phone calls, hundreds of emails, and spending time with people makes up most of my day. At least six days a week!
HOW WOULD YOU DESCRIBE LOLA B? The Mid-South’s premiere formal wear boutique. We custom order for clients, we’ve dressed thousands of girls for proms, homecoming, and pageants, and we have bridesmaids dresses and tuxes for wedding parties. We’ve been on the red carpet at the Grammys, have personal relationships with designers like Johnathan Kayne and Tony Bowls, and you’ll see girls on the Tennessee and Mississippi stages in State pageants very soon in their one-of-a-kind Lola B gowns and outfits. And most of our local pageants are won by girls wearing Lola B!
HOW HAS THE SHOP CHANGED OVER THE YEARS? While Lola B was always planned to be a dress shop, we did
start with casual wear in addition to gowns. For practical reasons as a new boutique, we wanted to make sure we had clients all year round. As we grew the formal wear side of the business, we were able to phase out of casual and expand into our new space at 5847 Getwell Road.
YOU HAVE A FEW SIDE PROJECTS AS DIRECTOR OF THE MISS AMAZING PAGEANT FOR YOUNG WOMEN WITH DISABILITIES AND THE FOUNDER OF GIRLS OF GRIT, A SUMMER DAY CAMP PROGRAM FOR TEEN GIRLS. WHAT INSPIRED YOU TO GET INVOLVED? In addition to running a business which allows me to mentor young women, I also donate my time and experience to non-profit organizations that empower girls and women. In 2014, I founded Girls of Grit, a summer day camp that provides activity based learning for girls and teenagers. Girls are exposed to a variety of career paths, taught leadership skills, and practice value-based decision making. I facilitate these camps, and in addition to the time spent fundraising and planning the activities, I took four weeks off from work in 2015 to hold the camps. Girls who attend camps credit the experience with building their confidence, expanding their world view, and being encouraged to pursue non-traditional careers. In 2015, I was asked to take on the role as state director for the Mississippi chapter of Miss Amazing Inc. Miss Amazing is a national 501(c) that provides leadership, interview skills, and event/appearance opportunities for girls and women who have disabilities. In 2016, my second year as Director, we grew the state program by 50 percent, traveled the state promoting the event, and made appearances with the Miss Amazing representatives. Also, I am the Vice President of the DeSoto County Business Women group. Each month, I secure community leaders and representatives for the charity spotlight as speakers for the groups monthly luncheons. The DCBW group is a philanthropic and networking group focused on community awareness and service. Since taking on the VP position, I proposed changing the format of the luncheons to include the charity spotlight speaker, to ensure the group's financial donations and service time were focused on a wide variety of need in the DeSoto County area. All of these endeavors fulfill my purpose, which is to support and empower girls and women. Click magazine | MAY 2016 75

Jennifer Sadler
ENTREPRENEUR & OLE MISS INSTRUCTOR
DESCRIBE YOUR CURRENT POSITION AT OLE MISS. I've been at Ole Miss since January of 2016 as an Instructor in their IMC, or Integrated Marketing Communications, Program. It's a relatively new program (five years young) that utilizes multiple media platforms to form comprehensive campaigns. Students learn everything from print and digital media marketing, to design and writing content for print and web. They all graduate with a minor in business to accompany their major.
HOW DID YOU FIND YOURSELF IN EDUCATION? I was in business for a little over a year when a former professor reached out to me via social media to let me know about an opportunity to teach at the University of Memphis. I was in a Summer entrepreneurship intensive at the time and had very quickly grown my own network of business owners and creatives in Memphis. Based on my background and how quickly I learned about owning and operating a business, the school hired me to be an instructor of entrepreneurship in the Fogelman College of Business. The first semester was eye opening in that I soon realized that I first had to teach students to think beyond borders in order to get them primed for the mindset of an entrepreneur. I discovered that even more than teaching entrepreneurship was instilling some lessons and skills learned outside of the classroom to help further students along.
WHAT’S YOUR DAY-TO-DAY LIKE? I have dedicated office hours for my students but my day-to-day is a myriad of teaching, grading, classroom prep and learning more about each individual student. There is the flexibility of being off for Summer, Winter break and Thanksgiving week, which is likely one of the best benefits you can ask for.
HOW WOULD YOU DESCRIBE YOUR CLASSROOM ENVIRONMENT? My students never know what to expect when they come to class. One day we played dodgeball outside so they could learn
how to shoot video using their phones and create 60 second promotions using apps. Another day we had an entire class held via Twitter, utilizing a hashtag to communicate with no actual words spoken — which was interesting as many of my more reserved students are much more vocal via social media. We'e done brainstorming sessions with post-it notes flying across the building, Google Hangouts with the Mayor of Oxford, and game shows to practice skill sets. I think of my classroom as the perfect marriage of collegiate lessons bottled in kindergarten methods. While we have done a lot of off the wall, atypical lectures, students have also learned how to utilize Google Keyword Planner to estimate the cost of running a SEM campaign, defined target demographics using Facebook's Power Editor, and dived into Google Analytics to discover how web visitor insights can chart the course for a marketing campaign. What I learned in Corporate America is what I teach in the classroom. Students turn in written assignments, or content-based articles, via LinkedIn articles posted to Twitter using the class hashtag #MeekJourno. Every article is tailored towards their specific industry of choice, so if the assignment is to analyze social media brands or websites for strategy, content, and structure, they may choose brands within the fashion industry, or technology, or sports — whatever their interest lies. The rationale is that if you're going to write about something it might as well be about something you truly care about. The benefit is that employers now see the articles they've written and count it as a nod to their expertise. Many students have told stories of being offered jobs or interviews from the new content they continuously push via LinkedIn — allowing their schoolwork to benefit them before graduation. If we plan to educate young people, we have to learn how to reach them where they are.
DO YOU HAVE ANY ADVICE TO YOUNG WOMEN WITH AN INTEREST IN YOUR FIELD? Learn everything you can, connect with people in your field of expertise who are smarter than you and take the challenge of failing as a necessary step in succeeding.

If you can dream it, you can do it. — Walt Disney
”
78 MAY 2016 | Click magazine
LeAnn Gray CEO, DESOTO TECHNOLOGY
HOW DID YOU END UP IN YOUR CURRENT POSITION? I spent a good part of my career, approximately 15 years, working for The Walt Disney Company. I worked in Human Resources at that site for several years before transferring to the Disney Catalog Distribution Center. The catalog site eventually closed and relocated to South Carolina. I was offered the opportunity to be part of the start-up team in SC and thus, relocated in 1998. I was in SC for approximately two years when another HR opportunity presented the chance for me to return to Memphis. After a few years back in Memphis, I received a call to return to Disney…back at the Disney Store’s DC. Ironically, the facility where I started my career with Disney would eventually become the place it would end. When TWDC announced the decision to sell the Disney Store’s and close the Memphis DC, I knew then that I wanted to do something different…and I had a plan. Fortunately, a number of things fell into place that allowed me to put that plan, the idea of starting a technology service company, into forward motion. The plan definitely had a “crawl before you walk” approach but it was moving forward. Eleven years later, what started as a simple computer repair business is now recognized as a full scale technology service and solutions provider. WHAT'S YOUR DAY-TO-DAY ROUTINE LIKE? Routine? That word is almost foreign to me. There are days I do wish for routine, but more often not. Ironically, I am not a technology expert by profession. I don’t spend my days troubleshooting PC or server problems, repairing networks, programming phone systems or building websites, mobile apps, etc. However, I have surrounded myself with experts that do all of those things and more…and they are very, very good. That allows me to focus on the aspects of the business that I truly enjoy: customers’ needs, employees’ needs, the operational needs of the business, etc. Additionally, I am a member of the Southaven Rotary Club and serve on the Board as the club’s Secretary. I am also actively involved with BARC (Blackwell Animal Rescue Center) and serve as Secretary on that Board. Not to mention, my husband and I have a blended family of
5 kids, 3 dogs and a cat. Most days, it’s a lot to juggle and it’s never routine. Truth be told, I wouldn’t have it any other way. WHAT ARE SOME OF THE CHALLENGES OF THE INFORMATION TECHNOLOGY FIELD? Keeping up with the pace in which technology changes. Often times that translates to researching, building, testing, etc. after hours and on weekends. If not, new technology will quickly leave you behind. Staffing. Finding great resources continues to be a challenge.
YOUR COMPANY, DESOTO TECHNOLOGY GROUP, WAS LAUNCHED FROM AN UPSTAIRS PLAYROOM 11 YEARS AGO. WHAT WAS IT LIKE MAKING THE LEAP TO A TRADITIONAL OFFICE SETTING? That move was rather easy actually. Most of my career was spent with Fortune 500 companies. So, actually, working from home took some getting used too. It took a lot of self- discipline for me to stay focused on running a business (and not doing household chores) from home. I remember feeling super excited and relieved that we were moving into commercial space and out of the upstairs playroom. I’m certain the kids were relieved too…they got their space back. Little did we know, within 24 months we would be looking to expand and moving again, doubling our space to accommodate the growth we continue to experience.
DO YOU HAVE ANY ADVICE TO YOUNG WOMEN WITH AN INTEREST IN YOUR FIELD? Because technology changes so quickly, it is critical to stay on top of the latest and greatest in products (hardware, software, peripherals, etc.) and services such as hosted and/or cloud based solutions. My advice would be “take the initiative to learn something new every day. Don’t allow yourself to get left behind.” Click magazine | MAY 2016 79

GENERAL MANAGER, TANGER OUTLETS SOUTHAVEN
HOW DID YOU GET STARTED? I started as a Customer Service Representative with another Retail Property Management Group when I was 16 years old. I stayed with this company throughout high school and college and continued to further my career with this industry. I have since been a Marketing Admin, Guest Service Manager, a Director of Marketing & Business Development and most recently a General Manager in which I started my new career with Tanger Outlets.
WHAT’S YOUR DAY-TO-DAY LIKE? Working as a General Manager at Tanger Outlets is very exciting. Each day is different. I am fortunate enough that I not only get to interact with our tenants but also our shoppers. This gives me the opportunity to not have to be in an office all day. I oversee the security, operations and marketing at the center along with a great team.
WHAT HAS THE ECONOMIC IMPACT OF TANGER OUTLETS BEEN ON DESOTO COUNTY SO FAR? Tanger Outlets Southaven opened on November 20 and created 900 + jobs during this time.
HOW HAS THE ART OF MARKETING CHANGED FOR YOU OVER THE YEARS? Marketing was very event driven when I first started my career. It has since moved to more digital and social media advertising as ways to drive traffic.
DO YOU HAVE ANY ADVICE TO YOUNG WOMEN WITH AN INTEREST IN YOUR FIELD? As you are going to school, try to get your foot in the door by maybe seeking out a part-time position. You can always grow with the company as you continue your education.
IF YOU HAD TO DO SOMETHING ELSE FOR A CAREER, WHAT WOULD IT BE? If I could choose anything else, I think I would be a doctor. I love working with people and coming up with solutions to problems.
WHAT HAS BEEN YOUR PROUDEST MOMENT AS GM FOR TANGER? Definitely being on stage and welcoming everyone to the Grand Opening of Tanger Outlets Southaven
DO YOU PLAY A ROLE IN THE HIRING PROCESS? I only play a role in the hiring process for Tanger Employees. That would consist of the Shopper Service’s Representatives and our office staff. TELL ME ABOUT A PAST JOB YOU WORKED THAT REALLY GOT YOU PREPARED FOR WHAT YOU DO TODAY. I have worked in this industry since I was 16. Every position that I have held before this really prepared me for this position in one way or another. Out of all my roles being a Director of Marketing and Business Development really was the stepping stone to get me where I am today. I was involved in so many different things that it prepared me to take on a bigger role such as this one. This including budgeting, leasing, marketing and PR, to name a few.

It’s a question he admits is a conversation starter for most guests who visit, and he muses over the fact that you can tell a lot about someone by their response. “That’s what I enjoy so much about art. It’s all in the viewer’s head. Whatever you see is just what your mind tells you it is.” As a former Air Force pilot and commercial pilot for FedEx, Jeff finds equal inspiration in speed, and the art of the two-wheeled and four-wheeled variety. Across from a minimalistic, New York-inspired art gallery downstairs — complete with backlit and forelit prints by Picasso and Margritte supported by black steel beams — is another of Jeff’s favorite works of art and conversational pieces. The 748 Ducati beneath a glass table is an exceptional view while having a beer with friends, says Jeff. “I ride it about once a year. It’s very endearing to ride, too. That’s a really gentle sportbike.” Upstairs, an open kitchen plan features stainless steel appliances and marble countertops, while the adjacent living area opens to a screened-in porch in one corner, and full mother-in-law suite with private entrance and private bath on the other. Lining the shelves in the main living area are photos of Jeff’s time in the service and the planes he has flown, and the furniture, he says, is a mix of several styles. “I just try not to offend,” he says, laughing. 84 MAY 2016 | Click magazine
Throughout the five-bedroom, fourand-a-half bath home, the sportbike and Ferrari-themed fascinations of its owner are interspersed with mementos from his time spent as a captain in the Air Force. A flight helmet that he wore while flying through multiple combat zones is placed inconspicuously high on a shelf across from an in-home movie theater that seats six. Beneath the theater, his garage features car lifts allowing four cars to be parked in a space for two, showcasing a Ferrari, Porsche, and a 1967 Camaro SS. “It’s good ole American muscle,” he says, “painted original factory orange with a hockey stick pin stripe.”

Outside of the theater and down the hall upstairs, the soft blue strié-painted walls of the master bedroom contrast comfortably against the dark cherry of Brazilian hardwood. The master bathroom, with Jacuzzi and glass-enclosed shower, is painted in translucent golden tones and features a TV mirror and vessel sinks. Also upstairs is another of Jeff’s favored pieces of artwork — a small, inlaid table he found in India. “I found this factory operated by the same family of artisans who did the encrusted jewels in the Taj Mahal,” he says. “You know, the Taj Mahal doesn’t have any paint on it. It’s all inlaid, semi-precious stones that make all the designs, so it never fades. Now, generations later, the same family has been taking care of it. And of course they can do more of it than what the Taj Mahal demands, so they have a little factory. And one of the cool things is as night….the reason the Taj Mahal glows is because it’s made out of a type of marble that’s translucent. So the light goes inside and because of the shape, it bounces the light around and makes it glow.” Jeff backlights the table to show the true artistry, but in the afternoon, it’s hard to see it with a red-gold sunset filing the space. What can be seen, however, is the shadow of both bridges, and a barge that passes quickly by on its way downriver. “It’s a great spot,” he says, and it’s hard not to agree. 86 MAY 2016 | Click magazine

Top the crackers/pretzels/cheese with the more crackers, pressing them down lightly to spread the cheese on both crackers. Tip: Don't make these too far in advance, the crackers will become soggy.
Cotton Candy Cones Ingredients:
4-5 small bags of cotton candy (any color/flavor you prefer) 1 box of ice cream cones (we used sugar cones) Clear bags & Ribbon for presentation Directions: 1. Open all of your bags of cotton candy and place the contents into one big bowl. 2. Open the ice cream cones and get all of your cones out and ready. 3. Tear off a generous piece of cotton candy and form it into a ball/oval like shape. 4. Gently push the cotton candy down into the cone, not smashing it down too far. You want it to look fluffy, like ice cream. 5. Put each filled cone into a clear bag and tie off the top to seal with ribbon. Tip: You must seal these treats if you make them in advance so the cotton candy won't melt away. If you don't want to use bags, an air-tight container will work until you are ready to serve them.

your motherhood. Your kids are watching you! Moms, if you aren’t taking intentional time out for yourself, your daughter is thinking one of two things: you don’t think you are worth being taken care of, or everything should always be about her. Think about that for a second. Would you want your daughter to think of herself as less than simply because she is emulating you? Conversely, would you want her to believe that the entire world should stop and cater to her at all times? When I say “take care of yourself,” I mean to suggest that you strengthen your mind, pay special attention to your body, hair, skin and physical well-being, or any combination of those. Here are just a few tips to help you begin to start taking care of you. • Start slow. Just take a few minutes for a warm bath. Make sure everyone knows that Mom is off limits for a little while and use an effective facial mask. Take a nap or take a walk. 94 MAY 2016 | Click magazine
