Shalom Church joins NCCU Shalom Church in Florissant is the third church this year to join North County Churches Uniting for Racial Harmony and Justice (NCCU) by signing its Covenant Statement following President Rance Thomas’ presentation at its 7:30 and 10 a.m. services on Dec. 8.

It is now the 27th church and the largest in far North County to become a member of this organization committing the church and members to work with NCCU to promote racial understanding and social justice in North St. Louis County. Approximately 2,000 members attended these two services.

The other two churches to join NCCU this year were Greater Grace Church in March and the First Presbyterian Church in October, both in the city of Ferguson.

As is the normal process, President Thomas makes presentations concerning the mission of NCCU and its work on promoting racial harmony and justice. Since the Michael Brown killing and the riots in

Ferguson it also works with five police departments to improve the relations between the police and community.

At both services his presentation and the signing took place prior to two very lively sermons. The first one was a visiting pastor and the second one was by Rev. Dr. Freddie Clark.

The work of NCCU is to bring people together to help them overcome some of the misunderstandings and fears of one another, This involves working with various agencies and organizations including the state, county, and city officials, police departments, school districts, Florissant Valley Community College, UMSL, hospitals, social agencies, etc. This has been done since the creation of this organization in 1998.

The Missouri Department of Conservation (MDC) has installed a new electronic gate system at the entrance of Columbia Bottom Conservation Area in Spanish Lake. The gate became operational starting Dec. 13.

The new security gate will operate by an electronic timer system and open automatically during the conservation area’s hours of operation, which are a half hour before sunrise until a half hour after sunset. Visitors will need to make certain they have left the area prior to the automatic gate closing, approximately 30 minutes after sunset. Area users who access the Missouri River via the boat ramp will also have to leave the area before the gate closes.

The new gate system will also enhance security on the area when it is closed, accompanied by ongoing patrols of the area by conservation agents.

Access to the boat ramp on the Missouri River has been restored via the southern loop gravel road. Portions of the area were severely damaged by flooding over the summer. Visitors should note that some roads, trails and parking lots are still closed while MDC evaluates the feasibility of making repairs to the affected infrastructure.

MDC purchased this 4,318-acre tract in 1997 to create an urban conservation area. The area has more than 6.5 miles of river frontage, about 800 acres of bottomland forest and a 110-acre island.

Columbia Bottom Conservation Area is located at 801 Strodtman Road in north St. Louis County. The area can be reached by taking the Riverview Drive Exit from I-270 and travelling north approximately three miles.

The city of Florissant and Old Town Partners had another festive Christmas in Old Town with Santa event and tree lighting ceremony Dec. 7 to officially start the holiday season. The weather was unseasonably warm for this time of year and the turnout was great.

The fun began at at City Hall, with the arrival of Santa and Mrs. Claus for kids to tell them their wishes for Christmas. Fun activities like cookie decorating, face painting, balloon animals made by Cookie the Clown and crafts for the kids made it a fun day. Cookies, cocoa and water were served for everyone to enjoy. The event was very well attended and everyone enjoyed themselves and had a great time with all the activities that took place.

The tree lighting ceremony began around 5:15 p.m. with Florissant Mayor Tim Lowery, Council President Jeff Caputa and Councilwoman Jackie Pagano wishing everyone a Merry Christmas and Happy New Year on behalf of the administration, Chief Fagan, city council and Judge Mary Elizabeth Dorsey. The 2019 Valley of Flowers Queen Grace Gettemeier and her court also said a few words to the crowd before Gettemeier switched on the lights to everyone’s delight and the Florissant Men of Harmony continued to lead the gathering in Christmas carols.

‘LOOK BACK’ from cover its Smart Energy Plan that will transform Missouri’s energy grid and change how customers receive and use energy.

Over the period of five years the plan will include more than 5.3 billion in capital investments in 2,000 projects across the state, including approximately $1 billion in electric investments in 2019.

One of those projects includes the implementation of a $28 million Pershall Substation located at 8680 Pershall Road in Hazelwood.

Kevin Anders, Vice President of Operation and Technical Services shared, “The customers that will be affected by this particular project is (approximately) 12,000 businesses and residences in North County. The area is bounded by I-270 on the north side to West Florissant on the east side, I-170 on the west side, and I-70 on the south side. If you’re in that area your reliability will benefit. It is a substation that will replace four other substations in that area that were built in the 1950s and 60s. The energy that this substation receives will come directly from the transmission system; none of the four subs that we’ll replace does that.

That alone will improve reliability.”

MARCH Breakfast in the classroom

A school district continues to make strides on one of its foundational pillars – collaboration. On March 5, Normandy Schools Collaborative introduced its fourth Breakfast in the Classroom (BIC) program at Barack Obama Elementary School. The six-month roll-out of the program was previously launched at Normandy’s other elementary schools – Lucas Crossing Elementary Complex, Jefferson Elementary School and Washington Elementary School.

Partners for Breakfast in the Classroom worked together to make the initiative possible, including provision of a $107,000 grant to ensure free breakfast for Normandy’s students.

Brian Wieher, Director of Child and Family Nutrition for Operation Food Search shared that the change in how breakfast is provided enables more students to partake in the first meal of the day.

“While breakfast is offered free at Normandy, not all students were partaking in breakfast,” stated Wieher. “When

we do this, we see increased attendance, decrease in tardiness, decrease in poor behavioral issues.”

APRIL Jump up and shout

The sidewalks along the 6100-6600 blocks of Delmar Boulevard tell a story of rich heritage for St. Louisans. These Delmar Loop sidewalks hold brass stars and informative plaques for St. Louis inductees in art, music, architecture, literature, journalism, civil rights, education, science, political activism, sports, acting, entertainment and broadcasting.

On April 24, the St. Louis Walk of Fame inducted musical talents The Isley Brothers into the showcase. Natives of Cincinnati, Ohio, the Isley Brothers moved to St. Louis in 1998 and sources state they have lived here more than 20 years. Their musical career has brought us popular songs such as “Shout,” “It’s Your Thing,” “Twist & Shout,” “Fight the Power,” “Contagious” and more.

At the ceremony, Joe Edwards, Founder of the St. Louis Walk of Fame, unveiled the new star and read the plaque that will accompany it before introducing Ron and Ernie Isley.

“This is an educational and lifetime achievement award that we want to get out around the country,” stated Edwards.

The fully completed seven-mile Maline Greenway will be an east-west link that will connect the Mississippi and St. Vincent Greenways. This newest completion, which remained within budget as previously predicted at $2.6 million, makes it easier for people to connect to Metro Transit on Lewis and Clark Blvd.

“We’re encouraging people to get out, take a walk and enjoy the new greenway,” stated Anne Milford, Communications Coordinator for Great Rivers Greenway.

“There was no crosswalk or light for people to get to the metro transit stop or to get to both sides of the park. Now we have an underpass that connects both sides of the park.”

For 17 years now, The Hispanic Festival, Inc. led by Haniny Hillberg, a native Bolivian and active member in the Hispanic community, has aimed to carry out that mission by hosting Fiesta in Florissant, one of its two annual Hispanic festivals. Fiesta in Florissant, a free event to the public, took place at the Knights of Columbus Park, June 22 and June 23.

Elisa Bender, one of HFI’s board members, shared what attendees could.

“Sit down in the shade under a tree or under the pavilion,” stated Bender, “and just enjoy the music and dancers. Enjoy the food all day long.”

After just a little over a year since construction began, Great Rivers Greenway announced completion of the first phase of the seven-mile Maline Greenway in North St. Louis County. Residents and surrounding communities can now enjoy the 1.6 miles that has created a more efficient connection between both sides

Before the end of 2019, St. Louis welcomed two highly-anticipated main attractions to the St. Louis Union Station along with other amenities in a $187 million family entertainment complex. On July 11, Lodging Hospitality Management and ICON Attractions announced at a media-only event that the 200-foot-tall St. Louis Wheel would open for operation in October and the St. Louis Aquarium would open on Christmas Day. “This is an exciting project,” stated Bob O’Loughlin, LHM Chairman and

CEO. “As everybody knows in St. Louis, we’ve been involved with Union Station for 12 years now. We completely re-did all the guest rooms—150,000 square feet of meeting and exhibit space. When we got to the 120,000 square feet, we (asked) what has St. Louis always wanted that they don’t have? We’re the largest city in the United States that doesn’t have an aquarium. So, we decided we’re going to do an aquarium. We went all over the United States and literally all over the world to figure out what would go with (the aquarium). We (concluded) that not only a world class aquarium, but a 200 foot Ferris wheel would probably be fitting. St. Louis has a rich tradition with the Union Station which was the world’s largest train station at the turn of the century.”

AUGUST Putting ‘super’ in superintendent

Every year the National Association of School Superintendents (NASS), which represents and advocates for education leaders nationwide, bestows upon one individual from around the country the honor of National Superintendent of the Year. This year NASS’ semi-finalists included one superintendent from each of the following states: California, Arizona, and Massachusetts. However, the recipient of this year’s honor was Dr. Nettie Collins-Hart, Superintendent of Hazelwood School District (HSD). She was officially honored at the NASS IgnitED Conference in Washington, D.C. “Dr. Collins-Hart is a champion for students and continuous improvement,” said Jon Roach, NASS Executive Director. “Her commitment to collaboration and mutual support in her district proved she is a leader with a demonstrated vision of building the next great generation of American students.”

Sonny Da Marto, NASS Assistant Executive Director adds, “If you look at what Dr. Collins-Hart has done within her district and community and what she is focused on, you’ll see why she is the type of school leader that our students really need.”

Normandy High School (NHS) students not only returned to a new school year they returned to a new space that was created specifically with them in mind. The high school opened for students with two new food service lines – Viking Grill.

Operation Food Search teamed up with Normandy Schools Collaborative to implement the changes at the high school that took the utilization rate for students partaking in lunch from between 45 percent and 50 percent to 86/90 percent in less than a month depending on school attendance on a given day.

“There are two lines in their cafeteria and up until this point (students) had been offered the same thing on both lines,” stated Brian Wieher, Director of Child & Family Nutrition for OFS. “Instead of making it seem like it was just the same old lunch line, we wanted to rename it something different.

I wanted to make it restaurant flare. I wanted these kids to feel like this is the best restaurant in town. And you can’t have a restaurant without a name. So, we named it. We have menu boards inside there now. The cafeteria workers – when they serve – are wearing black chef coats and hats, and the ‘Viking Grill’ is embroidered on their coats so they feel a sense of empowerment when their serving this food.”

I-270 North to get facelift

Missouri Department of Transportation (MDOT) announced in October a Design-Build Project will focus on improving I-270 from I-70 to west of Riverview Interchange. Several municipalities will be affected by this project including: Ferguson, Florissant, Hazelwood, Dellwood, Bridgeton, Calverton Park, Bellefontaine Neighbors and Moline Acres.

Thanks to collaboration between Healthy Schools Healthy Communities (HSHC) and its community partners with the nonprofit – St. Louis MetroMarket, the community had an opportunity to experience a difference in their spending this Thanksgiving.

St. Louis MetroMarket’s market on wheels (converted metro bus) was on the grounds of the Emerson Family YMCA, located at 3390 Pershall Rd in Ferguson on Nov. 26.

“We’re calling it Thanksgiving Feast,” stated Phedra Nelson, HSHC’s Community Wellness Director for the Gateway Region YMCA. “Everything that will be on the bus that day from 10 a.m. to 1 p.m. will be everything imaginable that you would cook for Thanksgiving dinner. This is when people buy cases of collard greens, mustard greens, sweet potatoes, yams, etc. They (will)

Operation Food Search (OFS) exercises its mission to fill the gap for child hunger by continuing awareness of what the nonprofit offers to the communities it serves. With school winter breaks quickly approaching, the organization aimed to remind the community that its programming structure which provides meals during the summer months when schools are closed, continues to do so during winter breaks.

OFS’ afterschool meals program, now in its second year, picked up where the Summer Food Service Program (SFSP) left off in August and provides continuous food service free of charge, through May 2020 to youth 18 years of age and younger.

“We recognize a child’s need to access nutritious food during breaks, and our mission is to address this gap that happens every time school is not in session,” stated Brian Wieher, OFS’ Director of Child & Family Nutrition. “We partner with the library system throughout the year, so this continuation of a program that works well makes perfect sense.”

Participants received a meal consisting of a fruit, vegetable, protein, dairy and a whole grain.

“The traditional afterschool meal programs happen in schools. Schools close for winter break. (However), with (OFS) and our community partner site locations that are not in schools, we’re able to keep them open throughout the break and all the children (can) still get a meal. Even though winter break is happening and schools close, (these locations) are still offering a meal and an activity.”

Rita Meyer was the oldest of seven children. A good fielding shortstop and average hitter during her four seasons in the All-American Girls Professional Baseball League (AAGPBL), she was one of 13 players who made the AAGPBL clubs hailed from Missouri.

Rita was nicknamed “Slats” after St. Louis Cardinals’ shortstop Marty Marion, given the nickname, because someone said her style reminded them of how Marion played – quite a common way to get a nickname in sports.

In 1946, Rita tried out for the league at spring training in Pascagoula, Mississippi, and was allocated to the Redwings expansion team based in Peoria, Illinois. She appeared regularly at shortstop and also pitched in 13 games in 1947. Rita hurled a no-hitter in that season, but lost the game, 1–0. Her most productive season came in 1948, when she posted career-highs in batting average (.232), doubles (12), stolen bases (45) and runs batted in (68).

The Redwings advanced to the first round of the playoffs for the first – and only – time in team history, but were swept by the Racine Belles in three straight games.

Rita Meyer married Robert Moellering in 1949. She became an active participant in public school sports for the rest of her life. On Nov. 5, 1988, she was honored with the rest of the All-American Girls Professional Baseball League during the opening of a permanent display at the Baseball Hall of Fame and Museum in Cooperstown, New York. Besides this, the St. Louis Sports Commission presents the Rita “Slats” Meyer Moellering Memorial Award, in honor of her, to recognize the accomplishments of women in individual sports. Her many hobbies included collecting emblems, poems and Dick Tracy comic strips. She was also depicted in the 1988 movie, “League of Their Own”.

Fifth-through-eighth graders attend 31st anniversary of Project Lift-Off Holiday Party Over 320 kids came to the 31st Annual Project Lift-Off Holiday Party that was held on Dec. 7 at the James J. Eagan Center. The event is a drug free, alcohol free and tobacco free youth holiday party sponsored by the city of Florissant, Youth Advisory Commission and D.A.R.E. At the event was a large crowd of fifththrough-eighth graders as they participated in many activities that were available for them. There were plenty of fun activities like ice skating, swimming and games. Party Time DJ rocked for dancing and plenty of pizza and soda was consumed.

Hazelwood School District alumnus Quinn Woodard has two other passions: writing and mentoring students.

Woodard has visited Armstrong, Arrowpoint, and Jury Elementary School in recent weeks to share his book, “Like Me,” with first grade students.

The book talks about different science, technology, engineering, and math (STEM) careers that students can explore, and introduces them to several African-American pioneers in STEM. Woodard, currently an engineer for Chevron, is an advocate for Project Lead the Way, a nonprofit organization that provides STEM curriculum for schools across the country, including all HSD schools.

His goal is to build on what

students learn in the classroom.

“Although we have great programs, there still are other opportunities to get students interested in STEM fields,” he said.

That drive inspired him to write “Like Me” to introduce minority students to STEM options at a young age.

Woodard read to one class at each school and provided all students in those classrooms with a copy of his book.

He attended Jury Elementary and Kirby Middle School before graduating from Hazelwood East High School in 2007.

Woodard earned a degree in electrical engineering from the University of Tulsa and later earned an MBA from Indiana University.

Talijah Williams is the first place winner at the recent Lindenwood University annual high school fashion show. Her threepiece outfit earned her the honors, as it can be worn both day and night. This is Williams’ second year as a designer in the Lindenwood high school fashion show where she competed against other high school designers from around the area.

The Normandy High School Fashion Design program has earned honors in regional and statewide competitions in recent years including Gold and Silver Awards in the state Family Career and Community Leaders of America (FCCLA) Students Taking Action with Recognition (STAR) competitions. Desiree Green, Fashion Design teacher at Normandy High School, says Williams has a talent of recycling old garments and making them into new, wearable and exiting outfits.

“Talijah exemplifies the qualities of an up-and-coming fashion designer,” Green said. “I’m proud to be her mentor.”

STLCC receives grant for training toward fight against opioid epidemic St. Louis Community College received $514,170 in grant funds from the U.S. Department of Health and Human Services through the Health Resources and Services Administration to support the fight against opioids. The funds are part of nearly $70 million awarded nationally by HHS for Opioid Workforce Expansion Programs (OWEP) grants.

STLCC will apply OWEP grant funds to students enrolled in one of two programs – associate of applied science in behavioral health support or addiction study certification.

Through May 2022 – over three years – STLCC expects to use the funds to prepare 120 paraprofessionals for careers in state, county and local human services agencies such as substance-use disorder facilities, community mental health centers, hospitals and schools.

Individuals who qualify for the OWEP grant will receive up to $3,000 toward costs of tuition, textbooks, academic support (tutors and writing), bus pass, monthly seminars or workshops and peer mentoring support. The grant funds will not cover the cost of re-

medial coursework. With the grant, the educational costs for students is reduced.

Potential students must meet OWEP grant requirements: • Participants must be enrolled full- or part-time • Eligible to work in the United States • Be a citizen of the U.S. or a foreign national having in their possession a visa permitting permanent residence in the United States • Pass a drug test • Pass a background check Students who are new to St. Louis Community College or those who are not currently enrolled at STLCC must: • Apply for admission • Take a placement test* • *OWEP grant will not cover tuition for remedial courses.

All players in the league must have NCAA eligibility remaining in order to participate. So as to maintain their college

Recipe: A time-saving family meal Ingredients: 1 large egg 2 pounds 93% lean ground turkey 1 medium yellow onion, finely chopped 1/2 cup oat milk 1/2 cup whole-wheat panko breadcrumbs 2 teaspoons pumpkin pie spice 1 teaspoon salt, divided 1 tablespoon olive oil 1/2 package (8 ounces) mushrooms, sliced 2 cups unsalted chicken stock 3 tablespoons whole-wheat flour 1/4 cup plain almond milk yogurt 1/4 teaspoon ground black pepper 1 tablespoon chopped fresh parsley Directions: Heat oven to 350 F. Line rimmed baking pan with parchment paper.

In large bowl, whisk egg; gently mix in turkey, onion, oat milk, breadcrumbs, pumpkin pie spice and 1/2 teaspoon salt. Form turkey mixture into eight (4by-2 1/2-inch) loaves; place on prepared pan. Bake loaves 40 minutes, or until internal temperature reaches 165 F.

Golden Globe nominee Eddie Murphy returns to ‘Saturday Night Live’

Born and raised in South St. Louis, Steve Bryan is now based in Anaheim, California, and has been allowed access to movie and television sets to see actors and directors at work. Though his writing has taken him far from St. Louis, Steve is, at heart, still the same wide-eyed kid who spent countless hours watching classic movies at neighborhood theaters.

In 1979, “Saturday Night Live” was in a state of transition.

After four years, John Belushi and Dan Aykroyd left the cast to focus on passion projects, such as a band based on their “Blues Brothers” characters.

Jane Curtin, Bill Murray and other core members of “The Not Ready for Prime-Time Players” finished the 1979-1980 season before moving on to other projects. The performers that originally made the comedy series a hit were now gone.

The 1980-81 season saw the arrival of newcomers Joe Piscopo and a young man named Eddie Murphy.

Over the next few years, these new faces helped “SNL” get back on track.

Murphy, who was a standout in the cast, also took time to star in “48 Hours,” “Trading Places” and his breakout hit “Beverly Hills Cop.” Cinematic success prompted him to leave the show and, except for hosting one time in December 1984, he stayed away from the show that helped make him a superstar.

On the last show of 2019, however, Eddie Murphy finally returned to “SNL,” bringing his classic Gumby, Mr. Robinson and Buckwheat characters back with him. Murphy’s critically acclaimed performance in “Dolemite is My Name” had a lot to do with his return.

For the Record The New Year is upon us and it’s time to start planning resolutions that can be quickly broken.

Here’s mine.

I’m going to start eating healthier beginning with fast food. No more burgers for the coming year. Yup, gonna give up those bovine by-products and move on. And just in time because several of my favorite restaurants have started a blasphemous hoax…err…a revolutionary idea—meatless burger patties. They’re completely plant-based and have been dubbed the Impossible Burger.

Go ahead. Ask me how they taste.

“How do they taste?”

How the heck should I know? It’s still the Old Year as of this writing, so of course I’m going to stuff my mouth hole with real-meat cow burgers before I take the big plunge and possibly do irreparable damage to my sensitive system.

To start the process I did a little research to find out just what I’d be getting myself into.

Unlike the old veggie burgers made from soy, lentils and beans, which resulted in a dry crumbly texture and irreparable damage to the system; the new and improved ones have a pink meaty color, juicy dribbles, smoky flavor and they can even get a charred crust when broiled. AND…wait for it…

Stop! You had me at juicy dribbles. I’m all in.

But, there are still questions to be answered.

First, what exactly are these wannabe burgers made of? Turns out they’re a tasty blend of soy and potato proteins. Yum??

Second, where do the juicy dribbles come from?

Answer: coconut and sunflower oil additives. Appetizing…not!

Next, what is it that holds this burger together?

The response is, of course, methylcellulose. Well, toss me a bib cause that made my mouth water like a busted pipe.

Finally, how is the burger taste recreated? Easy; from a little-known iron-containing compound called heme, which is found in all living organisms. The heme DNA is taken from soy plant roots and inserted into genetically engineered yeast.

Duh! Did a little more research. I watched a famous documentary on the outcome of genetically engineered things. You might have seen it. It’s an interesting show called, “The Fly.” Yea, the scientist in it also messes around with modifying Mother Nature and ends up looking like a hamburger that got over-fried on the grill.
