By Amanda Meyer St. Louis band Miss Jubilee and the Humdingers will be performing at the Doubletree Hotel in Maryland Heights on Sunday, January 19. Miss Jubilee and the Humdingers formed in 2007 to fill a void in St. Louis live music: good bands and good music to dance to. The band is fronted by high-energy vocalist Valerie Kirchhoff and is backed by a horn-fueled rhythm section and together they blend 20th century Jazz, Swing, and Rhythm and Blues—music enjoyed by swing dancers and fans of all ages. The band is comprised of five members: Valerie Kirchhoff, vocals; Dan Conner, drums; Lawrence Welby, string bass; Jacob Alspach, guitar; and Kellie Everett, baritone and tenor saxophone. Though the band originally began playing music from the 1940s and 50s, their musical selections have expanded to in-
clude musical genres beginning in the 1920s and through the 50s such as Hot Jazz, Swing, Rhythm and Blues, and a little Rock and Roll. The band has managed to cover a wide variety of genres and still remain within the realm of Jazz. Miss Jubilee and the Humdingers is an energetic, hard-working band, playing several shows a week in St. Louis and the surrounding areas. The band performs every Wednesday night at Schlafly Bottleworks and every Thursday night at Thaxton Speakeasy. The concert is presented by the St. Louis Jazz Club, and it is the first of many traditional Jazz concerts the club will be hosting in 2014. The organization was formed over 60 years ago to preserve, support and encourage traditional See MISS JUBILEE page 2
