HBA donates $12,000
A patron checks out books at St. Louis County Library’s Lewis & Clark branch following renovations in October of 2015. The branch has seen a 200 percent increase in program attendance in the past year.
Several St. Louis County Library branches are in different phases of renovation By Sara Hardin Several St. Louis County Library (SLCL) branches are in the middle of an extreme facelift thanks to SLCL’s capital improvement campaign, Your Library Renewed. The projects are a result of a 2012 voter-approved $0.06 tax increase to raise money for updated facilities. Six branches have already been opened to the public since being upgraded, an experience that SLCL Director Kristen Sorth describes as being emotionally moving for library lovers. “We had people waiting at the doors when we opened,” said Sorth. “Some people were crying when they came in and saw their new branches.” The new and renovated spaces feature new carpet, paint and furniture, vibrant areas for kids and teens, private study rooms and vending and commons areas with laptop bars. The Natural Bridge branch, which is currently closed for its renovations, will be the new home of SLCL’s first after-hours computer lab. “Natural Bridge has a special element to it,” explained Sorth. “The branch will
close at 9 p.m. and the lab will be open in the evening until 11 p.m. We’ve never had a lab that stayed open that late and we are highlighting it for that area. We think it will really benefit the area around Natural Bridge to have a computer lab open later.” Along with the new eye-pleasing aesthetics, programs offered by the libraries are also getting a boost. “We have lots of adult programs that are new to many of the branches, such as Zumba and dancing classes. We have Lego Club and other programs for children. We also have adult coloring book programs that we’re adding to our branches. We have a new systemwide kindergarten prep program for parents. It helps them learn about what their kids need to know before entering kindergarten. We’ve seen a lot of great results with these new programs,” said Sorth. “Lewis & Clark, for example, has a 200 percent increase in program attendance since this time last year.” All Your Library Renewed projects are predicted to be completed around
2019, with the next phase of renovations beginning at the end of 2016. Sorth explains that the gratification of introducing the new-and-improved branches See RENEWAL AT THE LIBRARY page 2
