United Way of Greater St. Louis Volunteer Income Tax Assistance program has been working to provide those in need with free tax preparation services

By Charlotte Beard For over 15 years, United Way of Greater St. Louis has been working with community partners to provide local families and individuals free tax preparation services through the Volunteer Income Tax Assistance (VITA) program. The program helps those who qualify and earn an annual income under the $55,000 threshold.

United Way’s tax coalition partners include Metropolitan St. Louis Community Tax Coalition, Gateway EITC Community Coalition, National Association of Black Accountants, and St. Louis Tax Assistance Program. In 2018, 877 volunteers worked through the coalitions to provide services which is estimated to have helped households save $5 million in tax preparation services. This effort also resulted in more than 18,600 tax return filings which helped low and middle-income families receive close to $18 million combined in refunds.

velopment Director for United Way of Greater St. Louis said, “United Way first got involved with the tax preparation program in 2003. At that time, we worked with volunteers to help create the Gateway EITC Community Coalition and help them get off the ground. We began reaching out to other coalitions that were doing tax preparation in the area and began providing additional funding.”

Eric Schneider, Executive Director for Gateway EITC Community Coalition shared, “We (prepared) 87,000 federal returns over that time period bringing back $98 million to the community. We’ve seen significant growth; the need is always there. We can grow more if we get more volunteers.”

Irwin added that grants help offset the free tax preparation costs. The services highly rely on volunteers to help prepare taxes. As partners can recruit volunteers, they are able to grow and increase the number of services offered.

Schneider shared, “We can always use more volunteers whether it’s a greeter, preparer, or reviewer. We’d love to get more people involved in this community service.”

For the duration of this tax preparation period, free assistance is provided on Saturdays and the times may vary by location. Families and individuals who desire assistance from the VITA program are welcome to call United Way’s 2-1-1 help line to verify their eligibility or request other information. “We also want to help them get the financial literacy to improve their status in life,” stated Schneider. “(In addition), we help them avoid predatory practices that are occurring in neighborhoods like with H&R Block, Jackson-Hewitt or an independent tax preparer who is not only going to charge them for the tax preparation services but also offer them a rapid refund loan with interest rates much higher than normal interest rates.”

Some of the sites will provide these additional free services: 1) ability to open a checking and/or savings account, 2) ability to meet with a credit counselor and get a free credit report, and 3) opportunity to purchase savings bonds.

COMMUNITY VOICES Choosing to be well

By Dr. Robyn Lawrence “You don’t have to be sick, choose to be well.”

I said this quote as I was ranting about a drug commercial. Americans are flooded with negative thoughts in regards to health everyday! We hear them in the car, on TV, from friends, at work, on billboards, on business signs, etc. Every corner you turn there are advertisements lying to you that your body can’t and that it needs some outside force. Frankly, that’s not true but rather a bold face lie. The truth is that you can be well and that you can heal yourself, you just have to choose it!

Over the years we have been lead to believe that we are breaking down and that we eventually just fall apart. This is true and not true. It’s true ONLY if you stop taking care of yourself, if you stop making time for yourself, and stop eating right and thinking right, and stop moving. Stopping all this will cause you to breaking down.

Just as you can do none of this and be sick you can do all of this and be well.

Let’s take this out of the perspective of the human body and talk about your car.

People always take care of their cars. Cars today have a main computer system in the

engine that is the master system and many adjunctive systems that all work together to allow a car to drive. In order to maintain your car, you take your car for routine checkups and have all the systems checked.

Do you get routine checkups?

Let’s use your oil light as a “symptom.” If the oil light in your car comes on, it’s letting you know that your oil level is low. It’s imperative that you change the oil so that you don’t throw a rod and damage the engine. If you don’t do it you won’t like the outcome. What if you put duct tape over the oil light? You have just masked the symptom and the problem will get worse and your car will break down. The choice is yours: maintain your car and it runs forever or neglect your car and it breaks down.

The only difference in a car and a human body is that you can’t get a new body.

Just like a car, you have a master system, the nervous system, and a bunch of adjunctive systems that allow you to function. As humans we get warning signs (headache, indigestion, anxiety, bladder problems, etc). Those symptoms are not telling us that we are lacking a drug or need a vaccine but rather letting us know we have one

or more stressors affecting us that is causing our master system to be running low, i.e. nervous system interference. Nervous system interference is similar to “running low on oil or gas”. Interference to our nervous system falls into three different categories: chemical, physical and emotional.

In order to function optimally the stressors must be addressed or slowly (and sometimes quickly) we will break down.

Seems a little different when you put it into perspective, huh? Believe me I know.

The 12th Annual Mayors’ Shamrock Charity Ball offers a festive evening of music, food and prizes The premier green tie event of North St. Louis County known as the Mayors’ Shamrock Charity Ball is scheduled for March 9, at Garden Villas North at 4505 Parker Road in Black Jack, from 6:30 p.m. to 10:30 p.m.

All proceeds from ticket sales, event sponsorships and raffle drawings directly benefit Valley Industries Sheltered Workshop which provides dignified and meaningful employment for over 200 adults with developmental disabilities.

A new word “charity” has been added to the event’s name to draw attention to the fact that this is a major fund-raiser for a not-for-profit 501(c)(3) organization, and not a St. Patrick’s Day celebration for politicians.

Much of the money collected is used to make Valley Industries the best place it can be for its workforce. In addition to being committed to customer satisfaction, Valley Industries is equally committed to all 200 employees. Their goal is to offer a high-quality employment program which builds morale, and rewards hard work and productivity.

“We try to take advantage of as many employee team building opportunities as we can to help build a sense of family or comradery among our workforce,” Valley Industries Executive Director Jim Guyre said. “The Shamrock Charity Ball monies enable us to expand our resources in order to keep our workers motivated, happy and productive.”

Valley Industries first opened its doors for business on March 13, 1967, under the name of Florissant Valley Sheltered Workshop with only 15 employees. Today, the Workshop employs more than 200 workers with developmental disabilities in a 60,000 square-foot facility in Hazelwood.

Home Builders Association donates $15,000 to Rainbow Village Properties

On behalf of the Home Builders Charitable Foundation (HBCF), 2018 HBA President Dale Black of CMS Homes (right) presented a $15,000 donation to Abby Kim, donor relations manager for Rainbow Village Properties.

The donation will be used to help fund an outdoor pavilion at Rainbow Village’s Wolff Community Center campus, which includes 13 accessible homes and 68 residents. The pavilion will create a safe, accessible, outdoor space for residents, their families and visitors. All residents receive 24/7 support and live in the organization’s homes long-term increasing their quality of life and providing them with housing stability. Rainbow Village strives to enhance the lives of individuals with developmental disabilities by providing safe, affordable and well-maintained neighborhood homes.

The HBA is a local trade association of more than 600 member firms representing the residential construction industry. The Home Builders Charitable Foundation, the HBA’s charitable arm, is a non-profit organization dedicated to providing housing assistance to people or organizations with special shelter needs.

When it comes to providing quality health care services and taking exceptional care of people, BJC HealthCare’s mission has remained steadfast since the St. Louis-based health system’s founding in 1993: “To improve the health of the people and communities we serve.”

In commemoration of the organization’s 25th anniversary in 2018, BJC invited employees to nominate a 501(c)(3) charitable organization that had personal meaning to them to receive part of $25,000 set aside to support grassroots, local organizations with a shared mission of improving health, education, child/youth development, senior/disabled support or community-building.

BJC employees responded with more than 100 nominations, which were subsequently evaluated by the St. Louis Community Foundation. The foundation made recommendations on how to allocate the $25,000 total funding opportunity among these deserving nominations.

Thirteen organizations were chosen to receive donations ranging from $1,500 to $4,000. Selected charities span the St. Louis region, out-

state Missouri and the Metro East, and support health, wellness, basic needs, youth and child development, education and behavioral health.

All selected organizations and the employees who nominated them will be recognized at a reception in March.

The charitable organizations receiving donations are: Burns Recovered, Maggie Welby Foundation, Christian Activity Center East St. Louis, Shared Blessings, Inc., CJ’s Journey, The Hayner Public Library District, Every Child’s Hope, The Ollie Hinkle Heart Foundation, Gateway to Hope, Voluntary Action Center, Inn from the Storm, Whole Kids Outreach and Jefferson County CASA. “As a nonprofit organization and one of the region’s largest employers, BJC works to be a good neighbor and community member, including support of charitable organizations that share a similar mission,” said Rich Liekweg, BJC president and CEO. “We hope these donations to some unsung heroes among charities can help support our collective missions in the communities we serve together.”

Northwest Views: Creating a safe haven for children and families

By DiAnne L. Mueller Seven-year-old Katie was excited to sleep in a real bed instead of on the floor. Ten-year-old Wesley had been living in a car with his mom and was thrilled to have his first shower in two weeks. Five-year-old Jimmy kept stuffing food into his pockets to save for later until he was told he could have as much food as he wanted.

The children who come to the Saint Louis Crisis Nursery are amazing—strong and resilient. They often arrive scared, upset or angry; usually nervous and uncertain, and they are frequently hungry. Their parents bring them to one of our locations voluntarily when the family is experiencing homelessness, illness, domestic violence, overwhelming parental stress, or other crisis.

But by the time a parent returns to pick the kids up 24 to 72 hours later, the children are giggling and having fun, relaxed and laughing. They are well fed and well rested, and their stress is reduced. Each child has a new

outfit and new books to take with them.

When these children, age birth to 12, stay at the Crisis Nursery they receive three meals and three snacks every day, a physical examination, Art and Play Therapy, and trauma-informed care by trained professionals – all free of charge.

The parent returns rejuvenated, having worked to resolve the crisis through referrals and recommendations from Crisis Nursery social workers and counselors. The family is encouraged to join the Crisis Nursery’s Family Empowerment Program to receive ongoing counseling help, parenting and budgeting classes and any other support that is needed at no cost to the family.

Preventing child abuse and neglect is a job for the entire community, and it is with the help and support of donors and volunteers from Northwest St. Louis County that the Crisis Nursery is able to keep almost 6,500

The third Delmar Loop Trolley Car was delivered to the Delmar Loop Trolley Headquarters on Jan. 29.

“This is an exciting milestone for St. Louis and the Delmar Loop Trolley system,” Delmar Loop businessman Joe Edwards said. “And what’s good for St. Louis is good for the entire region. Three functioning trolley cars will allow the trolley system to be in service seven days a week providing a non-stop connection between the Loop and Forest Parks and 13 million annual visitors.”

Once the third car is ready for service, the three cars will rotate so there is always one car on standby.”

The third car was built in the 1920s in Melbourne, Australia. Its capacity is 100 passengers with 50 seated and 50 standing.

Currently, the Loop Trolley Company operates Thursday through Sunday with two cars in service.

The Gomaco Trolley Company (Gomaco) refurbished and delivered the third trolley car.

Gomaco is a manufacturer of vintage-style streetcars located in Ida Grove, Iowa.

Jennings School District receives 90.2 percent on 2018 Annual Performance Report For the first time in the MSIP 4 and 5 process, the Jennings School District has earned above 90 percent on the Missouri Annual Performance Report (APR), scoring in the accredited with distinction range.

On Feb. 1, the Missouri Department of Elementary and Secondary Education (DESE) released statewide results for district Annual Performance Reports (APR) for the 2017-18 school year. More than 413,000 third- through eighth-grade students and an additional 175,000 high school students participated in the state’s testing program, leading to more than 1.05 million total assessments being administered to Missouri public and charter school students.

Due to changes in learning standards, completely new assessments in English language arts and math were administered in 2017-18; therefore, it is important to note that the 2017-18 results are not comparable with results from previous tests in those subjects.

Ten Jennings educators were included among the 2,500 Missouri teachers and other stakeholders who

crafted the Missouri Learning Standards adopted in spring 2016.

The creation and grading of the new standards reflected in a more challenging, high standard, teacher-developed set of state assessments. This 2018-19 school year, the Jennings School District was selected as one of three national recipients of the National School Board Association’s (NSBA) 2018 CUBE Annual Award for Urban School Board Excellence by the NSBA’s Council of Urban Boards of Education (CUBE) due to their hard work and commitment to students. Jennings is the first school district in the state of Missouri to receive this award in the 14 year history of this NSBA award. Schools are chosen based on demonstration of excellence in four key areas; the school board performance, academic improvement, educational equity, and community engagement.

With the help of many partners, Jennings School District is accomplishing each of these goals and is a regional leader that shows other districts in the state

and country that it is possible and exactly how to execute such plans. Within the past several months, Jennings has expanded the corporate partnerships to include World Wide Technology, Emerson, Centene, Regional Business Council, Express Scripts, Enterprise, Regions Bank, CVS, Schnucks, Niehaus, Clayton, and more. We have partnerships with UMSL, Lindenwood, Washington University, St. Louis College of Pharmacy, St. Louis University, St. Louis Community College, Lincoln University, Harris- Stowe State University, Ranken College, Georgia Institute of Technology, and more.

Lastly, Jennings School District has exceeded the state accreditation standards by 10 or more percentage points since 2015. Jennings maintains a multiyear graduation rate of over 97 percent. Despite Jennings 100 percent free lunch rate, recently, Jennings has achieved 100 percent graduation, career and college placement rates in 2017 and 2018.

WWII veteran honored by the members of VFW Post 4105 and the city of Florissant On Feb. 10, VFW Post 4105 member First Lt. Eugene Ulrich was being honored for his acts of heroism and the contributions he made to our great nation during World War II and after. Ulrich was also celebrating his 100th birthday which fell on Feb. 7.

He was presented a resolution from Missouri State Representative Gretchen Bangert’s office, a proclamation from Florissant Mayor Tom Schneider and awards from VFW Post 4105 and from the Veterans Coalition.

He flew over fifty air combat operations and received many prestigious medals which included the Distinguished Flying Cross, the Purple Heart, African-Middle Eastern Campaign Medal and the Distinguished Citation Medal.

A Walk Through History plaque dedication to honor Philip “Phil” A. Foeller will be The city of Florissant along with Old Town Partners will be hosting a dedication to unveil a plaque in honor of the late Philip “Phil” A. Foeller. This will be the 37th Walk Through History plaque in honor of an individual who has made valuable contributions to the city of Florissant. Foeller grew up on Jefferson Street directly across from the church and attended school there. Foeller was a lifelong community-oriented resident and businessman of Florissant. He and his wife Rose Marie raised five children in Old Town and founded Florissant Auto Radiator still at 865 N. Lafayette.

Foeller was a United States Army Veteran, he was the 1979 Chamber President, the 1980 Sacred Heart Man of the Year and was a 4th Degree Knight with the Knights of Columbus Duchesne Council #2951.

Recipe: Simple ways to be heart smart

Banana Pecan Cherry Oatmeal Ingredients: 1 cup old-fashioned oats 2 cups water 1/2 cup pecan milk

1 banana, sliced 1/4 cup pecan halves 1/4 cup dried tart cherries 1/4 cup honey

Directions: In large, microwave-safe bowl, combine oats and water. Microwave on high 3-4 minutes, or until oats are cooked through. Watch carefully to avoid boiling over.

Remove from microwave, stir and divide between two bowls. Pour 1/4 cup pecan milk over each bowl.

Divide sliced banana, pecan halves and dried tart cherries between each

bowl and drizzle with 2 tablespoons honey. Serve immediately.

Cherry Pecan Energy Bites Makes: 10-12 energy bites Ingredients: 1 cup toasted pecan halves or pieces 1 cup dried cherries 4 medjool dates, pitted

1/4 cup old-fashioned oats 1 tablespoon cacao powder, plus additional, for coating (optional) 1 teaspoon vanilla extract

Directions: In bowl of food processor, combine toasted pecans, dried cherries, dates, oats, cacao powder and vanilla extract.

Pulse until ingredients begin to bind and form loose, dough-like ball.

Roll into 1-inch balls. Roll balls in additional cacao powder, if desired, and transfer to airtight container. Refrigerate until ready to serve, up to seven days.

Note: To make gluten-free, substitute 1/4 cup of certified gluten-free old-fashioned oats. *Heart-Check certification does not apply to recipes.

Brie Larson uses her ‘Captain Marvel’ powers for diversity

Born and raised in South St. Louis, Steve Bryan is now based in Anaheim, California, and has been allowed access to movie and television sets to see actors and directors at work. Though his writing has taken him far from St. Louis, Steve is, at heart, still the same wide-eyed kid who spent countless hours watching classic movies at neighborhood theaters.

to see the latest adaptation of her book (there have been previous movie versions as well as a stage play).

I would think my familiarity with the source material would count more than my gender in rendering an honest, informed critical opinion.

As a comic book reader for 50 years, I am extremely familiar with Larson’s character, Carol Danvers. I picked up the first issue of “Ms. Marvel” back in the 1970’s and followed Danvers’ adventures all the way to her days with the X-Men. Carol Danvers is a fascinating character, one who has lost and gained so much in her life. That’s why I feel I am qualified to review the film and, if offered the chance, to interview the cast.

Brie Laron’s requirements have opened doors, though, for experienced writers who haven’t gotten the opportunity to do interviews for high-profile films. That doesn’t mean white male reviewers need to get kicked to the curb. There is enough room for everyone at the interview table.

ne notable superhero already is trying to save the world in the weeks leading up to her first solo film.

Brie Larson, who plays the title role in the upcoming “Captain Marvel” movie, is taking a hands-on approach regarding her press interviews. As Yahoo Finance pointed out, she insisted that the selected journalists not be “predominantly male and white.” For her recent interview with Marie Claire, for instance, she handpicked writer Keah Brown.

As a freelance writer, I have worked the press junket circuit and sat in on countless “roundtable interviews” with celebrities.

Between 1998 and 2007, I covered films ranging from “The Rugrats Movie” to the cinematic adaptation of “Rent.” As a fan of the “Men in Black” franchise, I was extremely happy talking with Will Smith and Tommy Lee Jones about the second film. A very honest roundtable interview with Ang Lee about “Brokeback Mountain” remains a fond memory.

Print/online critics like myself are often segregated into makeshift conference rooms

away from the radio and TV journalists. In most cases, men and women of all races are equally represented at the interview tables.

Depending on the film, younger, non-professional writers at the high school and college level also are invited to interview the available talent. That’s especially true at events like the San Diego Comic-Con, where diversity is quite visible. In my experience, it has never been a case of me sitting at a table exclusively with other white guys.

I also took exception with Larson’s observation last year that “A Wrinkle in Time” was not made for white men of a certain age.

Moore On Life Props for Valentine’s Day. Thank goodness you came along and created a legitimate excuse to get me out of the kitchen.

Truth is I don’t need a reason to get out and eat. My excuses begin on Friday.

Friday: It’s the celebration of the end of the week. Everyone knows you eat out. It’s written right there in the Good Book: And the Lord created the earth and saw it was going well, but by week’s end He was famished from making all those dandelions and mosquitoes. So on the fifth day He created Friday and lo, fast food establishments came into existence. But lo again, they were not fast enough. So He took a rib from the BBQ Shack and created the drive-through window.

As for Saturday; it’s basically the same as Friday just spelled differently. Everyone eats out on Saturday, don’t argue, it’s just the way it is.

Sunday is a day of rest. No one cooks on Sunday; it’s sinful. We eat our leftovers from Friday and Saturday.

Monday: The beginning of the workweek saps us of energy. There is scant enough left to stagger to the Golden Arches and mumble, “One McMeal…gasp…hold onions…wheeze…supersized.” Collapse.

Tuesday’s the slowest day of the business week.

That’s when all the specials are offered by food chains to boost business. They entice thrifty people like us with: 10 percent off Tuesday, Two-ForOne Tuesday, Kids Eat Free Tuesday (we have been kicked out of many an establishment trying to cash in on that one) and of course, Taco Tues-

day. We have to take advantage of the savings or we might as well take a wad of bills and flush them down the ol’ honey pot, which coincidentally is where you’ll find us after Taco Tuesday.

Wednesday is hump day! We celebrate by eating out to keep the economy buzzing. I like to think of it as my civic duty.

Thursday: There’s gotta be a holiday of some sort. Bingo! Google said it was, Rare Disease Day. We’ll celebrate by going into an unknown restaurant; ordering food cooked by strangers with uncertain hygiene habits and possibly contract a rare case of salmonella.

Fortunately, this year Valentine’s Day fell on Thursday, but of course my husband made no reservations. All the nice places were booked; the others had lines around the block to their drivethrough windows. Instead he took me to a romantic little place. We loaded up.
