Stair climbers around St. Louis will come together to climb 40 floors and 856 stairs

By Charlotte Beard Imagine sitting still or lying in bed and discovering that without warning the air getting to your lungs has become limited or cut-off completely by some seemingly invisible force.

On April 4, stair climbers around St. Louis will come together to climb 40 floors and 856 stairs of the Metropolitan Square building bringing awareness and simulating breathing challenges of lung diseases at the annual Fight For Air Climb event and fundraiser.

The event will begin at 7 a.m. at 1 Metropolitan Square in St. Louis.

A signature event of the American Lung Association, the Fight For Air Climbs are held in skyscrapers around the country on the same day and at the same time.

“The idea of the stair climb began more

than 30 years ago in our Chicago, Illinois office,” stated Brett Schuette Executive Director for American Lung Association in Missouri. “Back then we wanted to find a way to get people engaged with our organization through something that was unique that they were able to do during the winter months. We have a lot of active people in the community that really the only thing they can do during the winter months is (go to) the gym. That’s how the stair climb begin but it also gives our climbers a comparable experience of fighting for air while stair climbing because it’s similar to the breathing struggles of those suffering from lung disease. So, from that (idea) it was well-received there. Now it’s implemented in more than 60 cities across the country. Some other non-

for-profits have adopted that idea to do stair climbs from our Fight For Air Climb.”

This year marks the 12th climb event for the American Lung Association in Missouri.

When asked about the level of participation in St. Louis, Schuette stated that last year 1,150 participants participated in the climb. This year the association anticipates having 1,400 to 1,500 climbers.

Some participants have made the climb their annual event. Since 2018, Brittany Graham has spent her birthday participating in the Fight For Air Climb in honor of her mother, Cindy, who died from idiopathic pulmonary fibrosis (IPF) in 2017. Last year her mom’s best friend, See ‘FIGHTING’ page 2

Graham’s mom battled a cough for about three years.

The doctors first thought it was allergies, but the cough worsened making conversations challenging. Then she was diagnosed with pneumonia, which led to more tests on the origin of her cough. She was diagnosed with IPF, a progressive lung disease, and multiple myeloma, a form of cancer at the age of 60. After the diagnosis, Graham’s mom moved in with her. As a result of her illness, she had four hospitalizations in a six-month period.

“Her lungs were 40 percent scarred,” stated Graham.

“She needed a lung transplant but couldn’t get one because of the multiple myeloma. At age 28, ready or not, I became my sweet momma’s caregiver and embarked on what would be the most painfully beautiful experience of my life.”

After her mom endured numerous challenges her mom went into hospice August 2016. She passed away Dec. 8, 2017.

“We were both too young for this. We didn’t see it coming,” Graham stated.

“It was the honor of a lifetime to be able to take care of her.”

One day while driving home Graham saw a billboard for the Fight For Air Climb at Metropolitan Square, which happened to be on the weekend of her birthday. She decided to sign up to memorialize her mother.

“Nothing can ever replace what Idiopathic Pulmonary Fibrosis took from me,” stated Graham. “My mom won’t zip up my wedding dress. She won’t babysit her grandchildren. She won’t meet me for any more dinners on Friday night. Despite these harsh realities, I’ll fight until my last breath to help find a cure for this deadly disease, so other people don’t have to travel the same devastating journey my mom and I traveled.”

Over the last several years, participant efforts around the country have raised more than $53 million combined to support the mission of the American Lung Association. Schuette estimates that the St. Louis climb has raised over $3 million to-date.

“With the funds that are raised through the Fight For Air Climb we do quite a bit of (things),” shared Schuette.

“One of the things that we’re proud of is that we invest in research – we added new research awards to our grant program. From that there is some research that is being done at Washington University.”

When asked about the specifics on the research being done, Schuette shared that one of the things being explored are the various ways medicine can quickly breakup mucus in the lungs for asthma sufferers, as well as those with COPD, cystic fibrosis and other lung diseases. He shared that the research also centers on lung disease scenarios involving DNA. “With the research that we do here in St. Louis we also have our Airways Clinical Research Center,” stated Schuette. “(Also), thanks to our advocacy efforts, 11 more states passed laws raising the legal age of tobacco sales to 21. We created the first lung cancer screening implementation guide to help community hospitals and health systems institute and implement life-saving lung cancer screening systems. Those are just a few of the things that we’ve done with the money that is raised from the Fight For Air Climb.”

Additionally, according to Schuette the association has

staff that makes visits to the homes of children with severe asthma and allergy to provide education on the proper usage of inhalers and bring awareness to triggers of asthma attacks that may be specific to a child. Education is also provided to school nurses in identifying an asthma attack, for example, and what action to take in such circumstances.

While the American Lung Association believes in education for adults who care for youth who suffer with a lung disease, the association is also challenged with education for the community at-large.

Schuette states, “There are a couple common misconceptions about lung disease and more specifically about lung cancer. One of the common misconceptions is that people get lung cancer only by smoking which is not the case. More and more we’re seeing that people are getting lung cancer who are non-smokers – who have never smoked a day in their life. The second (misconception) is that for women the number one cancer killer is breast cancer when it’s not – it’s lung cancer. In general, breast cancer is very important, and women need to do whatever they can to bring awareness in the month of October and get their mammograms. Something that we like to say is that you also (must) take care of your lungs. So, we need to bring more awareness to the population that lung cancer is the number one killer of women. If you are a smoker we encourage you to quit and talk to your physician about getting a low dose CT scan to see if there is a possibility that you have lung cancer because it can be detected through the low dose CT scan.”

Making safety a priority We all can agree that we want safer communities from Hazelwood to Holly Hills.

The question is how can that happen? It doesn’t matter whether you live in Maryland Heights, Pagedale or Spanish Lake, we are all painted with the brush of living in the most violent city in America: St. Louis. Crime is a regional problem from Metrolink, to rolling gun battles on I-270, to auto-burglars giving wakeup calls in Blackjack. So, what can be done? Plenty!

Numerous studies have shown that the 63136-zip code is a consistent feeder to those who end up in juvenile courts and later adult criminal courts. Knowing that information, the question should be asked of two major players as to why aren’t coordinated programs being surged into this zip code to prevent kids from dropping out of school and into a life of crime? These entities I speak of are the St. Louis County and its Children Services Fund and the United Way (the clearing house of social service organizations). If you are a voter and a resident of St. Louis County you need to demand that county resources earmarked to

assist youth at risk get to the youth at risk to prevent the risk to the youth and the rest of us. We must demand the programs and funds should be directed to highest areas of need.

The same goes for United Way. Is it unreasonable to expect the largest clearinghouse of social services to use coordination as a best practice?

The election for St. Louis County Executive is in the horizon. Candidates need to be asked why isn’t the county pushing for a regional strategic plan for crime reduction in coordinating and collaboration with the city, not in competition. What is the plan to strengthen collapsed communities? Collapsed communities, I won’t name them, are havens for the underground economy.

The underground economy or the black market is drugs, guns, sex trafficking, and other illegal operations which thrive in collapsed communities because there are no mainstream resources and opportunities available underground economy. Our racial divisions tracing back to the era of benign and not so benign neglect and the

ongoing flight from neighborhoods with color to homogenous tracts for reasons of fearful motivations is ironically only creating actual conditions for insecurity in your neighborhood.

Richmond Heights, Maryland Heights, and Hazelwood should be concerned that Kinloch and Castle Point are collapsed communities. Demand the current and future county leaders coordinate and keep collapsing communities from turning into failed states like Somali or Syria. Think beyond your neighborhood’s safety to ensure it, and others safety in 2020.

The 51st Annual St. Patrick’s Day Parade and St. Patrick’s Day Run will take place March 14 The Annual St. Patrick’s Day Parade in St. Louis will take place on March 14, starting at noon. Leading the 51st annual parade will be parade founder and St. Louis Irish Consul Joseph McGlynn, Jr., Parade Committee Chairperson Maureen McGlynn, a Guest of Honor from Ireland; a Military Guest of Honor; an Honorary Parade Marshal St.; St. Louis City Mayor Lyda Krewson ; Parade Director Kevin Udina; and other dignitaries. This year’s parade will also be a Salute to St. Louis Irish Heritage.

The parade steps off at noon from 20th and Market Streets and proceeds east on Market to Broadway and then south on Broadway where it will disband at Clark Street. Market Street will be closed at 7:30 a.m. from Compton to Broadway. Parade units will stage starting at 7:30 a.m. from Compton to 18th Street.

The parade, also known as St. Louis’ “Rite of Spring,” will feature over 130 units, including floats, bands, marching units, large helium-filled balloons, and over 5,000 marchers.

In the past with good weather, more than 350,000 spectators have gathered along Market Street to watch the elaborate floats, marching bands, marching units,

dance groups, animal units, novelty units, and motorized units.

The children’s favorites – giant cartoon character helium-filled balloons – will be featured in the parade. Each balloon will have its own team of handlers, usually employees of the corporate sponsor of the balloon in question.

The 42nd Annual Michelob ULTRA St. Patrick’s Day Parade Run will precede the parade at 9 a.m. McGlynn noted the support the run has received over the years from Anheuser-Busch, “From the very first run 42 years ago, Anheuser-Busch was there supporting our efforts.”

The St. Patrick’s Day Parade Run is St. Louis’ largest locally organized run. It covers a five mile course which will begin on Broadway just south of the Hilton St. Louis at the Ballpark hotel in front of the Ballpark Village (Broadway between Walnut and Clark Streets) and conclude at 8th and Market Streets. In addition this year will also feature a three kilometer run which will be part of the five mile course. Runners will then be directed to the Michelob ULTRA Runners Village at The Ballpark Village at 7th and Walnut Streets. Ballpark Village will also be the site of this year’s Irish Village featuring a live band, food and beverage which will be open prior to, during and after the parade.

Over 8,000 runners, walkers and wheelchair racers of all ages participated in the

2019 St. Patrick’s Day Run. There are 13 different age categories for both male and female competitive runners, ranging in age from under 14 to 70-plus years.

Prizes will be awarded in age categories for both men and women, including “14 and under” and “70 and over.”

This year’s run will bring back the popular “Best Costume” award competition. Individuals and teams can show off their best Irish-themed outfits. In the past there have been Irish potatoes as well as St. Patrick driving out the snakes. The runners’ creativity is their only limit.

The cost is $36 with the entry fee going up in March.

Past top finishers will be issued special bib numbers so they will be allowed into the corral at the front of the pack.

Starting at 9 a.m. some of the unique inflatable balloons that will be in the parade will begin inflating at Leprechaun Village located on the east side of Aloe Plaza as part of the pre-parade activities. Children will be able to enjoy bounce houses and there will be a caricature artist and other fun activities.

The St. Patrick’s Day Parade and the Michelob Ultra St. Patrick’s Day Parade Run celebration kicks off Friday night, March 13 at the Hilton St. Louis at the Ballpark, 1 South Broadway, with cocktails and dinner which will be followed by a faux Casino featuring Horse Races and betting booths. Gateway Arch National Park commemorates Women’s History Month with series honoring courageous women Select Saturdays in March, Gateway Arch National Park hosts special programs that spotlight 18th-, 19th- and 20th-century women of Missouri and the West in honor of Women’s History Month. Pamelia Fergus: March 28; 1-3:30 p.m.

Pamelia Dillin Fergus of Illinois met and married Scottish immigrant-turned-American-citizen James Fergus, a self-made, self-taught and ambitious husband. He was often gone trying to find ways to get rich, leaving behind his growing family. He and Pamelia wrote to each other.

Many of their letters survived and paint a picture of a man who demanded Pamelia take on more and more responsibilities, which she resisted. Park Ranger Kathy Bommarito explores their complex relationship.

Bentwood Nursing & Rehab opens new rehab COMMUNITY VOICES unit in Florissant Feb. 12 was a monumental day for both MGM Healthcare and Bentwood Nursing & Rehab.

On this day, the North County nursing home opened its doors to showcase the incredible new addition to their facility: a state-of-the-art rehabilitation unit.

At the grand opening event, support from the local community was strong. The Greater North County Chamber of Commerce and the city of Florissant welcomed Bentwood’s advanced rehab wing into the neighborhood with a ceremonial ribbon cutting. Staff and supporters alike cheered with excitement as David Andrew, Bentwood Nursing & Rehab Administrator, cut the ribbon.

A new chapter for funeral service in Florissant

For the past four years, the Hutchens family has owned and operated the chapel and cremation center created by the Stygar family in Florissant.

The Hutchens family purchased the facility on New Halls Ferry Road from the Stygar family back in 2016. It was important to the Stygar family that another local family would step in to carry on the legacy they started building back in 1937.

To continue the same quality care the Stygar and Hutchens families have delivered to the greater Florissant community for generations, all funeral and cremation services will now take place at the Graham Road location. The Stygar location on New Halls Ferry Road will now serve as a worship space for a local church, Florissant’s Peace of Faith Worship Center.

“The time has come for a new chapter for both the Hutchens and Stygar families, but the community will still be able to rely upon the same staff and service they’ve become accustomed to for decades, as these two locations will be consolidated into one facility in Florissant,” said Mark Hutchens. “The greatest advantage from merging the two firms into one facility is the cost reduction, which will allow us to keep our prices in line with the budgets of the families we serve.”

The proceeds from the sale, which was finalized on Feb. 4, will be used to create more space in the forms of a new community room, additional chapel, and celebration of life areas at the Mid Rivers Mall location. The Graham Road location will also undergo a renovation – including upgrades in décor, lighting, and technology,

as well as redesigned office space and upgrades to equipment and vehicles.

Moving forward, Hutchens Funeral Homes will continue to serve families at two facilities: Hutchens Mortuary & Cremation Center at 675 Graham Rd. in Florissant and the Hutchens-Stygar Funeral & Cremation Center at 5987 Mid Rivers Mall Dr. in St. Charles. All prearrangements made at the New Halls Ferry Road location are still intact and will be honored as they were written.

“We believe this will be a positive change for everyone involved. Arbor Day Celebration and art contest planned in Creve Coeur on April 26 The city of Creve Coeur is hosting a free and fun-filled Arbor Day Celebration on April 26, from 1 to 3 p.m. at the Tappmeyer House in Millennium Park, 2 Barnes West Drive in Creve Coeur.

Hosted by the city’s Horticulture, Ecology and Beautification Committee, the Arbor Day Celebration is a family-friendly event that includes craft activities, a plant giveaway, a nature walk, photo booth, tree planting demonstration, educational displays and a pizza food truck, as well as a display of entries from the all-ages art contest.

To participate in the art contest, themed Nature Around Us, artists must mail or drop off entries to Janet Rueschhoff, City of Creve Coeur, 300 N. New Ballas Road, Creve Coeur, Missouri 63141

Northwest Extra hands for ALS: John Burroughs students

Views: lend a hand to make a difference

By Maureen Barber Hill High school can be a challenging time. We can all probably look back at our high school years and think of one or two (or maybe more) cringe-worthy moments. It is all part of growing up.

But it would be unfair to not acknowledge that high school students can and do have much to contribute to the greater good. In some cases, their dedication and energy towards a cause is nothing less than awe-inspiring. We have been witness to just such dedication and energy here in our local community in the form of John Burroughs School and the Extra Hands for ALS club.

Extra Hands for ALS is a service organization assisting people with ALS. The mission is to instill the importance of community service and develop leadership qualities in young adults by uniting them with people who have ALS and their families. Through the program, high school student volunteers help people with ALS with “friendly visitor” services such as helping with mail or email, housecleaning, getting groceries, doing yard work, reading aloud, or simply providing companionship. These things seem small, but they become a monumental challenge for people living with ALS. Beyond volunteerism, the students involved in Extra Hands plan and coordinate at least two completely student driven fundraising events a year.

The program was honored last fall by the St. Louis Chapter of the Association of Fundraising Professionals with the “Outstanding Youth in Philanthropy” award.

Extra Hands is the legacy of the late Jack Orchard, an alum of John Burroughs, Harvard and Stanford Universities. An international business person, entrepreneur, author, and person with ALS, Jack founded the Jack Orchard ALS Foundation, which raised money for ALS research,

and then Extra Hands for ALS. Extra Hands has existed at John Burroughs since 2012 and since then has assisted at least 35 families. Senior leaders work to recruit underclass students to continue the program and keep it going with continuity. The impact of Extra Hands is immense for people living with ALS. It is estimated that the average out of pocket expense of ALS can be as high as $250,000 annually for a family living with the disease. At $30 an hour for professional caregiving, volunteer service is paramount to their care and stability. The 500-plus hours that Extra Hands volunteers have provided equate to an estimated savings of approximately $15,000 for families of people with ALS. The ALS Association has had discussions with John Burroughs and the Extra Hands leaders about how this program could possibly be replicated in other schools, several of which have expressed interest. Such an expansion would further extend the reach and impact of the program in our local community, and possibly beyond.

Thank you to the students of Extra Hands for making a difference for people with ALS, and by showing how sometimes just lending an “extra hand” can mean so much more.

The city of Florissant will be kicking off the pre-Valley of Flowers Spring Cleaning Campaign with the Annual Confluence Trash Bash from 8 a.m till noon; the Florissant location will be at Sunset Park, starting at the lower pavilion. Volunteers are needed to walk the park along the riverfront to clean up trash and debris to keep our watersheds clean. Individual volunteers, civic groups, and youth organizations are encouraged to attend; no experience is required, all are welcome.

Red Raspberry Crush: 1 bag (12 ounces) frozen red raspberries Tarts: 1 1/2 cups Red Raspberry Crush 1 1/2 tablespoons cornstarch 1 package (two 9-inch crusts) refrigerated pie crust Glaze: 1 cup powdered sugar 2-3 tablespoons reserved raspberry juice 1/2 teaspoon vanilla sprinkles (optional) Directions: To make Red Raspberry Crush: Thaw raspberries on countertop at room temperature 30 minutes.

Using rolling pin, gently mash raspberries in sealed bag.

To make tarts: Heat oven to 425 F. Line baking sheet with parchment paper and set aside.

Place strainer over medium bowl; strain Red Raspberry Crush 10-15 minutes, allowing raspberry juice to fall into bowl. Reserve raspberry juice for glaze.

In medium bowl, combine drained Red Raspberry Crush and cornstarch; mix to combine.

Roll out both pie crusts into rectangular shapes and cut each into eight 2 1/2-by-4-inch rectangular pieces. Place rectangular pieces on prepared baking sheet. Add 1-2 tablespoons Red Raspberry Crush to center of each piece and top each with second rectangular piece. Use fork to crimp edges of dough.

Bake 10 minutes, or until crust is golden brown. Remove pastries from oven and allow to cool completely.

To make glaze: In medium bowl, whisk powdered sugar, reserved raspberry juice and vanilla.

Drizzle glaze on cooled pastries and garnish with sprinkles, if desired.

t’s three months into the year and I’ve long ago kicked my New Year’s resolution to the curb. Yeah, my diet. That ain’t gonna happen. But maybe I can still play catch up and at least try to eat better.

I know, how about a delicious nutritious salad instead of a fatty fatso burger?

So I went to the store and loaded up on greens….lots and lots of healthy greeny greens. But then something weird happened. Lettuce got recalled. Seriously? I had bought so many packages of the stuff that I received a personal ring-a-ling.

Me: “Hello.”

Caller: “Hello, Mrs. Moore?”

“Maybe? Who wants to know?”

“This is the government.”

“Oh good, because I’ve got issues. You dirty thieves are wasting all my tax dollars and furthermore, you’re too big, fat and bloated. You need lettuce!”

“Actually, this is the FDA and coincidentally that it what I need to talk to you about, your recent large purchase.”

“What? Is there a new lettuce tax now?”

“No actually, there’s been a recall. You need to dispose of it immediately.”

“Or what?”

“You’ll contract E. coli.”

“Ugh. Okay. Is anything safe right now?”

“Not really: salmonella’s in chicken; listeria’s in dairy; you can get botulism from raw honey or unsafely canned products; norovirus is out there in salads and sandwiches and of course, there’s hepatitis A in fish.”

“Fine, I’ll just go out and get a greasy burger.”

Sweet remedy

“Mad cow disease.”

“Geez, it sounds like I might as well pack up and get the heck out of Dodge.”

“Wouldn’t advise it.”

“Why not?”

“Coronavirus.”

“Dang! Well then, what am I going to eat? I’ll starve!”

“I suggest something that never, ever gets recalled…chocolate.”
