By Charlotte Beard It can take a lot of adjustment for both active military and veterans to become fully acclimated back into civil society. That is why for the second year the Greg Mans Farmers Insurance Agency is partnering with American Legion – Post 397 and H.E.R.O.E.S. Care for their 500 Suits for 500 Soldiers campaign.

However, this year insurance agent Greg Mans and his wife Lois shared that they have secured 750 suits for the event. The event will take place March 31 from 9 a.m.

– 2 p.m. at Greg Mans Farmers Insurance Agency located at 9335 Gravois Road, Suite C, in St. Louis. Complimentary suits,

shoes, shirts and ties will be given to St. Louis area veterans and active military to help make their transitions easier. Spouses are invited to accompany a veteran to this event and will receive the opportunity for complimentary clothing as well.

Men and women will check in with a DD 214, active or retired military identification, or a show of their American Legion or VFW membership. Each person will be assigned a “battle buddy” to help size them for the appropriate suit and assist in matching the appropriate tie for their selected suit. The “battle buddy” will also escort them to the area for getting properly fitted for a shirt

followed by shoes.

“We will have police here [and] firemen because some of those guys will act as battle buddies,” Greg stated.

Lois went on to explain for readers that the idea of ‘battle buddies’ to escort the men and women attending the event comes from the idea that when a soldier is in battle they are assigned a mate for protection of each other.

“That’s part of what we’re trying to do— give one-on-one services to all the veterans and [existing military] that are coming in.”

People are invited to volunteer to be a ‘battle buddy’ during the event by calling Lois at 314-638-8890.

Having been through the process of hosting the event for the first-time last year, the Mans have great plans for making the event enjoyable and successful for servicemen and women.

“Our plan is to have a seamstress here”, Greg said, referring to those who may need hemming for the suit pants. “So, while [the recipient] walks around [Arena Alterations] can do it. She gives us a big discount for using her services. She’s local. We will have counselors and [other resources] here [for those who] need any help, employment…we can help them with that as well.”

Veteran Affairs’ outreach will also be one of those resources in attendance.

Servicemen and women, along with their spouses, can expect to enjoy food in the morning courtesy of Panera Bread and Pretzel Pretzel will be handing out pretzels throughout the event.

“Outside we’re going to have a tent,” stated Lois. “It’s going to be a big event. [We will] have hamburgers and hotdogs, bottled water, soda, chips. We’re going to have a DJ and we [will have] mobile salon haircutting that is the first mobile salon in Missouri.

[The Clipper Mobile Salon] is insured and she’s also our client.

She’s donating her service; we’re sponsoring her to donate [this service].”

Lois went on to share that there will be two chairs available at one time for free haircuts. A barber will be brought in to assist the Mobile Salon.

Women soldiers and veterans will be getting vouchers for five pieces of clothing. Women are required to set up an appointment with the organization that will be announced closer to the event.

All female spouses are given the opportunity to receive a voucher and male spouses can receive a suit.

“We’re not leaving anybody out,” assured Lois. “[The spouses

are] their backbone. H.E.R.O.E.S. Care [states] that is the backbone of the person being deployed. They need [support] too.”

The idea for giving suits to soldiers and veterans originated two years ago when Farmers Insurance was asking its agencies to obtain suits in good condition to be donated to those who have served in the military.

The Mans’ agency decided to take it a step further after they became affiliated with American Legion – Post 397, a wartime veterans’ service organization. This connection tied them to H.E.R.O.E.S. Care’s initiatives. H.E.R.O.E.S., an affiliation of program partners that provide support to military families, donates the shirts, ties, suits and shoes to the legion. H.E.R.O.E.S. receives these donated items from Men’s Wearhouse.

“Last year…I think people thought it was just too good to be true,” shared Greg. “They thought it might have been old used suits. When they got here [you heard], ‘Wow this is…’ When they get [quality] shoes, shirt, tie and a suit [that’s] within anywhere from $800 to $1,500 in product, that’s not a bad gig.”

“We had one gentleman—he came from North County,” Lois added. “He took five buses and walked a mile with a cane to get a suit.” Greg chimed in, “We gave him a ride home.”

“We want to help these veterans,” stressed Lois. “It doesn’t matter where you live—if you can get here we’ll give you a suit.”

The Mans would love to secure the donation of a bus to transport veterans and active military who need help getting to the event from a designated pickup location at the American Legion in Creve Coeur. That initiative is still pending as of the time of this interview.

A variety of volunteer opportunities are available prior to the day of the event including de-tagging at H.E.R.O.E.S. Care.

By Orvin Kimbrough When he was a young boy, I would try to assess the level of consciousness that my son had about being black. Based on many conversations, I thought that he had none. I would often ask questions about his friends, such as “What do you all like to do? What classes are you in together?

Are they male or female? What color are they?” He usually had no problem answering the questions, except when we talked about race, often quipping, “Dad, why does it matter?” It wasn’t until my early 20s that I began to see how race impacts one’s life, so I understood his reluctance to cede any ground that would alter his belief in the uniformity of people.

Throughout his young life I’ve exposed him to several movies and books that focus on and discuss race, such as “Roots”

by Alex Haley; “The Kalief Browder Movie”; “13th”, a documentary about race and mass incarceration; and “The Untold Story of Emmett Luis Till.” It was only after a

recent incident at my son’s middle school that I realized he has been listening all along.

When I picked my son up from school one day, I could tell something was bothering this typically jovial, goofy kid. After some time, he finally opened up and told me that, within the context of a lesson, two classmates used the “N word.” I tried as best I could to help him process his experience, expressing that the N word does not describe him or others who look like him, knowing full well that this would not be his last encounter with the word or the systems that separate and expose people to opportunity by race.

There are times when it feels like we as a society are committed to discussions about race, equity and inclusion only when there is an event that forces a compassionate and informed response. At the moment of the event, our collective energy is highest and comes off to those most

impacted as one-off, seemingly disingenuous and disconnected efforts. This event with my son and others like it are true opportunities to reform our minds, sensitivities and systems. Developing a higher consciousness is a process. We are on a journey to understand and change. Let’s continue to push ourselves to live into our better selves. Our words and actions matter because in them is the power of life or death.

North County Boy Scout Pack 797, Troop 713 win scout awards

Saint Louis Crisis Nursery collects over 400 purses to help struggling moms

Pack 797 and Troop 713, both belonging to the North County District of the Boy Scouts of America, recently were honored at the Cathedral Basilica in the Central West End of St. Louis City.

Pack 797 and Troop 713 both are located at St. Rose Philippine Duchesne Roman Catholic parish in Florissant.

Pack 797 won the Chaplains Quality Merit Unit Award and Pope Paul VI National Catholic Unit Excellence Award, while Troop 713 received the Archbishop’s Quality Honor Unit Award and Pope Paul VI National Catholic Unit Excellence Award from the Catholic Committee on Scouting.

The ceremony was held on Feb. 4 at the Cathedral Basilica. The presentation was made by the Office of Youth Ministry for the Archdiocese of St. Louis.

The purpose of these awards is to recognize Catholic-chartered packs and troops which exemplify youth ministry through Catholic Scouting ideals.

Years ago, the Saint Louis Crisis Nursery staff noticed that some moms were carrying a grocery sack rather than a purse when dropping their children off at a nursery. Wallet, Kleenex, personal items, all in a plastic or paper bag.

Advertiser Profile: Low price, high cost: millennial fever

By Russ Patton, owner of Byerly RV Here we go again! The RV show in February was the first indicator that 2018 will be another strong year for RV Sales. The rebirth of RV popularity is like, well, the rebirth of America. The label makers have a name for you guys. Baby boomers meet the millennials. As the last boomers roar out the exit in their new half-million-dollar diesel pusher, a young family enters in their tow-ready sport utility vehicle.

Byerly RV celebrates 70 years in business in 2018. We have seen several generations begin and finish their RV adventures at Byerly. As for me, I’m almost out of here myself. My son, Warren, and his exceptional “family” of 65 employees will carry on the tradition, just about the time I learn how to spell millennial.

I see a similarity in the cycle and try to explain to Warren the familiar low price/high cost trap that awaits many first-time buyers. Most people won’t buy the cheapest car, TV, clothes or other gadgets, but may still shop price for an RV because they don’t know what else to compare.

The popularity of RVs has attracted sharks into bass country. Price is the bait, but after you are hooked and add up the total, sometimes hidden costs, the lesson is learned the hard way. The only remedy is to slow down and shop carefully. Use the internet; Google ratings, YouTube or Facebook postings.

Best advice – visit a few dealers. Most of the local, family-owned RV dealers prosper because they want your repeat business. Signs you are

entering a shark tank: they want your driver’s license and ask you to fill out a credit app so they can determine which vehicles you “qualify” to look at. Access to vehicles is restricted and you feel hand-cuffed to a sales rep whose primary goal is to turn you over to the closer. When you leave, you may not get a complete disclosure of all you will be expected to pay at closing. They don’t want you to shop and it is almost impossible to pay cash. The price seems good, but you may find a lot of add-ons which, if needed or wanted, could usually be bought for less at another dealer. The difference between the perceived great price and the bottom-line cost can be huge. The real eye-opener is when you want to trade in the entry level model and find out what the bank says it’s really worth.

Florissant marks 76th anniversary of United States Navy Seabees Florissant Mayor Thomas P. Schneider declared Monday, March 5 as “Navy Seabees Day” in Florissant in recognition of the 76th anniversary of the United States Navy Seabees. A U.S. Navy flag that was a gift from a Navy Master Chief to Retired Navy Chief Zach Schneider is on loan to the mayor’s office.

Also on loan from retired Chief Schneider is the Ensign (A U.S. flag on a Navy ship) that flew from the rear of the USS Cape St. George CG71 when part of the task force of the Aircraft Carrier Abraham Lincoln CVN 72. That flag was flown on “The Cape” in 2014 when the Lincoln ‘s task force sailed into the Persian Gulf through the straits of Hormuz in defiance of threats from Iran.

Both flags adorned the flag pole at city hall to honor the 76th anniversary of the “Can Do!” Seabees.

“For 76 years,” said Schneider, “Seabees have been paving the way to victory in war and peace, serving the Navy, Marine Corps and sister services with a “Can Do!” spirit of great pride and dedication.”

Schneider served with Naval Construction Battalion 74 during two tours in Vietnam and then as a Seabee surveyor in Guantanamo Bay. Schneider added that the Seabees boast that “The difficult we do at once! The impossible may take a bit longer!”

While in the reserves he was commissioned as Ensign Schneider in the Naval Civil Engineer Corps.

The Navy Construction Battalions “CB” nicknamed “Seabees” were created on March 5, 1942, by an engineer from Washington University in St. Louis. Rear Admiral Ben Moreel, chief of the Navy’s Bureau of Yards and Docks recognized the need for a militarized construction force following the Japanese attack on Hawaii. An Admiral Moreel plaque will be at Soldier’s Memorial downtown.

Hazelwood custodial staff take extra precautions during flu season For the well-being of the students, teachers, and staff throughout the Hazelwood School District will be implementing additional cleaning procedures to combat the flu virus from spreading.

Extra disinfecting will be required during flu season, and if there is a confirmed case of flu in a classroom, all of the new cleaning procedures will be completed daily upon the request of a staff member, school nurse or principal.

“The nation is getting hit with influenza and multiple other viruses. St. Louis North County is not the exception,” said Christian Bertel, HSD

coordinator of health services. “I have been in contact with the Center for Disease Control to make sure that we are doing what we can. I was assured that we are doing all the right things and to continue this practice as the CDC predicts we are not at the peak yet.”

Currently, the district has offered influenza vaccinations, hand sanitizer in each classroom, and provided handwashing and Influenza education to students, parents, and staff to prevent the virus from spreading.

Normandy Awarded $20K PLTW, Toyota Grant to benefit STEM Programs

The Normandy 7th-8th Grade Center was one of eight St. Louis-area schools to receive funding totaling $175,000 from Project Lead the Way (PLTW) and The Toyota USA Foundation.

The PLTW program empowers students to develop in-demand, transportable knowledge and skills in computer science, engineering, and biomedical science.

For the last three years, Normandy Schools Collaborative has offered PLTW biomedical science and engineering courses at Normandy High School. Olga Hunt, science curriculum coordinator for the Normandy, says the Normandy 7th-8th Grade Center will use the

$20,000 grant to implement the curriculum at the middle school level.

“This is going to give our students a good look at STEM careers and help them decide which pathway they want to go into at the high school as they further their studies,” Hunt said. “Teachers will begin training this summer to deliver the PLTW curriculum for the 2018-19 school year.”

Grant recipients were announced Feb. 21 at Advanced Manufacturing Technician (AMT) Live!, a national workforce development conference at Lewis & Clark Career Center–State Technical College of Missouri in St. Charles.

Cottleville St. Patrick’s Day Run For The Helmet The 10th annual run and parade winding through the town of Cottleville will be held on March 17.

No pets or strollers are allowed this year for the race.

David Garcia is the newest addition to the coaching staff. This will be Garcia’s second coaching stint with the Rascals as he spent three seasons with River City starting in the fall of 2009. In 2011 the Rascals tied the Frontier League record for wins (68) during the regular season. 13 of the players Garcia has coached have been signed to affiliated baseball clubs. He has spent the past four years as a hit-

‘A Wrinkle in Time’ more relevant now than ever before

While I was growing up in the 1970’s, the only “Internet” or “Information Superhighway” I knew about was called a public library. A place for research and fueling the imagination, libraries then and now are a treasure trove of knowledge and entertainment. Students were taught how to use the card catalog and the “Reader’s Guide to Periodical Literature” when working on term papers and reports.

At one library branch I was introduced to the works of Madeleine L’Engle, the author of “A Wrinkle in Time,” which has been adapted for an upcoming Walt Disney film. This young adult novel covers concepts such as the fourth dimension and pure evil taking over an entire society. L’Engle reportedly had trouble getting her novel published, but it was embraced by teachers and students.

Katniss Everdeen from “The Hunger Games” and Claire Randall from the “Outlander” series get a lot of press, but one of the best literary heroines ever created was Margaret “Meg” Murray. The first book in L’Engel’s “Time Quintet,” “A Wrinkle in Time” introduced readers to Meg, a bright young lady who criticizes her own appearance. She has a good mind, but her rebellious spirit often gets in her way. Like all of us, she wants to know her place in the world.

Played by Storm Reid in the film, Meg is the

child of two brilliant scientists, but her father (Chris Pine) mysteriously disappeared years ago. A new neighbor, Mrs. Whatsit (Reese Witherspoon), offers a way for Meg and her highly intelligent brother Charles Wallace to find their missing dad. Their journey takes

In today’s society, those messages are as strong and necessary as they were when the book was first published in 1962.

Director Ava DuVernay (“Selma”) took the reins for this big screen adaptation, but the Walt Disney Studios released a TV movie version of “A Wrinkle in Time” in 2003. It was a good effort but didn’t make a strong impression.

DuVernay’s efforts have already resonated with fans of the book and movie lovers hungry for a great story. It’s high time that more people meet the fascinating Meg Murray.

“A Wrinkle in Time,” rated PG for thematic elements and some peril, opens in theaters on Friday, March 9.

them to different planets and civilizations, but the key to finding Mr. Murray and getting him home rests in Meg herself.

Even with Oprah Winfrey, Reese Witherspoon and Mindy Kaling playing three key roles, the burden here is on Ms. Reid. “A Wrinkle in Time” is Meg’s story and journey of discovery.

Born and raised in South St. Louis, Steve Bryan is now based in Anaheim, California, and has been allowed access to movie and television sets to see actors and directors at work. Though his writing has taken him far from St. Louis, Steve is, at heart, still the same wide-eyed kid who spent countless hours watching classic movies at neighborhood theaters.

‘Yeggs’ is a comic series about Robert and Bill, two rabbits who have opened their own egg franchise in the Midwest (St. Louis area). We follow their day to day lives, watching as they go about the hectic task of preparing for their one big day every year. Moore On Life Just when I thought I’d get a few honey do’s out of my husband after the Super Bowl officially closed the football season, along comes another husband-stealing hussy – the Olympics. Seriously, how can I compete?

Did you just snicker and say that I’m seriously too old to compete?!

Why you little diptwerp! I wasn’t talking about competing in the Olympics; I meant competing with my husband’s time.

Once again, he resituated his cheeks back into the still-warm divots which he had already hollowed out in the couch cushion and turned on the big screen.

It’s been that way for the last six months of what he referred to as his “Touchdown Therapy.”

But he’s moved on now to: hockey and ski jumping and snowboarding and biathlons – which is a very strange sport involving skiing and shooting.

That seems like an extremely weird combination to me, much like yoga pants and Kim Jong Un. Come on, they just do not go together at all!

And now there’s something new for which my husband has developed a passion for…curling.

Ha, curling, that’s a funny one, since he’s as bald as an eagle egg.

I looked toward his giant TV screen to see the U.S. team rolling bowling balls with handles attached down an iced alleyway. I assumed that their fingers must be too fat for the holes and so they had to attach handles.

The competing Swiss team must have been left behind a terrible mess because no sooner had our guys got halfway down the lane then they grabbed their brooms and began to vigorously sweep the floor. I had never seen such enthusiastic sweeping before. Hmph, just like Switzerland to leave behind a nasty mess and not have the courtesy to clean it up for us. Probably threw some chocolate wrappers all over the lane just to throw us off our game.

I sat down to watch for a minute.

“What? You’re going to join me?” my husband asked in dis-

belief.

“Yes,” I said, “Oh, I could watch this all day.”

“I didn’t think I could ever get you to watch a sporting event?”

“Sporting event? Pshaw. I can’t take my eyes off watching these men get so excited about doing a little housework.”
