By Sara Hardin North County businesses will have the opportunity to promote their services to the community this Saturday, March 19 at the 2016 North County Business Showcase. The event, co-sponsored by the Greater North County Chamber of Commerce, the City of Florissant, North County Incorporated and Christian Hospital, will be held at the James J. Eagan Community Center in Florissant from 10 a.m. to 2 p.m.

“We’ll have over 60 exhibitors at the showcase,” said Carolyn Marty, President of the Greater North County Chamber of Commerce. “It will be a great opportunity for the community to come and check out what great services and products are offered right here in

North County.”

While parents browse the event’s various exhibits, the little ones can enjoy the games, face painting and balloons provided at the Kids Corner, a feature sponsored by Ferguson-Florissant School District. There is no charge to attend the showcase, and families and all North County residents are encouraged to attend.

Bret Berigan, Public Relations Manager for Christian Hospital, explains that the Business Showcase offers a special chance for the hospital and local businesses to connect with residents in a setting that promotes the continued growth and well-being of the community.

“The business showcase is a nice opportunity to interact with the community and share the services of Christian Hospital,” said Berigan. “We’re here for the people, and it’s a nice way to have some face-to-face interaction with the community.”

Attendees to the Business Showcase are encouraged to visit the 10 “Hot Spot” booths at the event for a chance to win a $250 Visa Gift Card, a $50 Hendel’s Restaurant Gift Card, and a Papa Murphy’s Family Feast basket.

Greater North County Chamber Board of Directors supports Prop B The Greater North County Chamber of Commerce Board of Directors at the March Board meeting voted to endorse Proposition B, which is on the April 5 ballot in the chamber-member cities of Bellefontaine Neighbors, Cool Valley and Florissant.

Proposition B would allow those cities

to continue applying and collecting the local sales tax on the titling of motor vehicles, trailers, boats, and outboard motors that were purchased from a source other than a licensed Missouri dealer.

The Chamber Board of Directors recognizes that a rejection of this measure would result in a reduction of local reve-

nue to provide vital services in those cities and it would place Missouri dealers of motorized vehicles, outboard motors, boats, and trailers at a competitive disadvantage to non-Missouri dealers of those items.

Many North County cities, including Hazelwood and Ferguson, have already passed similar propositions.

Municipalities using REJIS court system launch new online public portal A new website will provide a very convenient way for the public to check their pending cases, outstanding fines/ court costs and other information that will assist them in resolving those cases.

The information can be accessed at municourt.net.

Area municipal court administrators, prosecutors and judges have worked with the Regional Justice Information Service (REJIS) Commission to create a very user friendly tool to access this information. This is just another way to show that our municipal courts are responsive to the needs of the public and strive to make the judicial system a more positive experience.

On occasion, people lose their copy of a traffic ticket, forget a

court date or need information about a case and this website will provide a quick, convenient way to access that information. People can enter their name, case number, ticket number or court date to locate the information they need. The website is intuitive and user friendly.

This website will only include information from the municipal courts that use REJIS services.

The REJIS Commission is a government entity created to provide information technology services to criminal justice and government agencies. REJIS was founded in 1974 under a cooperative agreement between St. Louis City and St. Louis County.

City of Ferguson names final four chief of police candidates The city of Ferguson has named the final four candidates for the position of chief of police after an extensive nationwide search.

The city of Ferguson’s Human Resources Department conducted the search to fill the vacancy left by Interim Chief Andre Anderson, who submitted his resignation effective Dec. 2, 2015.

The city closed its application process for the chief of police position on Jan. 22, receiving 54 applications from candidates across the United States.

The top six candidates were invited to interview in Ferguson with the following panels: Ferguson residents, Ferguson City Council members, and law enforcement executives and criminal justice experts. The panels narrowed the candidate pool from six to four.

The top four candidates were then interviewed by Ferguson department supervisors, members of the Ferguson Police Department and a group of Ferguson residents.

“We understand the importance of choosing the next leader of the Ferguson Police Department,” said Ferguson City Manager, De’Carlon Seewood. “We carefully selected candidates we felt had the experience to move the Ferguson Police Department forward, including someone who could immediately work with the community.”

Brenda Jones currently serves as a Behavioral Specialist for Macon Charter Academy. She has over 28 years of law enforcement experience. She formerly served as the Chief of Police for the City of Pine Bluff, Arkansas.

Frank McCall Jr. currently serves as the Chief of Police for Berkeley, Missouri. McCall has participated in the FBI National Academy (221st Session), United States Department of Justice, the Missouri State Highway Patrol Executive Development Program and various Leadership/Management Development Programs.

Delrish L. Moss currently serves as the supervisor of Miami Police Department’s Public Information/Community Relations Section. He is the current President of the Miami Police Athletic League, a not-for-profit organization that pairs police officers with community children and builds relationships through sports and academic activities.

Girl Scouts share cookies and time with first responders

Girl Scout troops throughout eastern Missouri hosted Milk and Cookies parties at their local fire stations and police stations, handing out cookies, singing songs, presenting Girl Scout Cookie trivia and asking the first responders about their careers. Chante Lynom, who leads a troop of 16 Girl Scouts in kindergarten through fifth grade in the Normandy School District, said her troop’s event benefitted the firefighters at Northeast Fire Protection.

“The Milk and Cookies party showed the girls that it’s good to give back, especially to first responders who come to your home in an emer-

gency,” she said. “They learned that it’s important to take time and show that they care, and that they’re glad the firefighters are in our community.”

Lynom said her Girl Scouts also learned about firefighting as a career, as well as fire safety and what to do if you’re in a fire. The troop got a tour of the fire station and witnessed a firefighter in full protective gear.

“Both the girls and the firefighters enjoyed the event,” Lynom said. “They thanked us for the cookies and milk, and asked us to come back, and not to wait until this time next year!”

City of Hazelwood offers Easter egg hunts for adults and children

Photo courtesy city of Hazelwood More than 12,000 Easter eggs will be hidden throughout White Birch Park, which will be divided into sections for five age groups, at this year’s Easter Eggstravaganza on March 26, in Hazelwood.

People of all ages can hunt for Easter Eggs this year in the city of Hazelwood. The Hazelwood Parks and Recreation Division is hosting its 12th Annual Adult Easter Egg Hunt on Friday, March 18, at White Birch Park at 1186 Teson Road.

Plus, the city of Hazelwood is hosting its popular Easter Eggstravaganza for kids, ages 10 and under, on March 26 at the same park.

Who said Easter Egg Hunts were just for kids?

People, age 21 and over, can relive their childhood memories by participating in Hazelwood’s yearly Adult Easter Egg Hunt on March 18 from 7 to 9 p.m. A limited number of tickets are available for purchase for $10 each at either Civic Center East or the Hazelwood Community Center. Once the tickets are gone, the event is sold out. All participants on the hunt grounds must have a ticket and be at least 21 years old.

Participants are urged to bring flashlights and Easter baskets to search for thousands of hidden eggs with a limited number of them containing special prizes. Registration begins at 7 p.m. and the egg hunt starts at 8 p.m. Those who attend

the event can bring their own beverages, coolers and lawn chairs, but keep glass containers at home. A DJ will be playing favorite song hits throughout the night.

Thousands of Easter eggs will be hidden for kids, ages 10 and under, to find at this year’s Easter Eggstravaganza on March 26 at White Birch Park. Starting time is 10 a.m. sharp. Admission is free and open to the public. The park will be divided into different sections for the following age groups: under 24 months (tennis courts); ages 2-3; ages 4-5; ages 6-7; and ages 8-10. Raffles for a bike to be given to one girl and one boy will be conducted for each age group. The event will feature an egg hunt and a visit from the Easter Bunny. 2016 Miss Hazelwood Alexia Rainey will be escorting the Easter Bunny around the park grounds to pass out candy and allow children to have their pictures taken with him.

Garrett Elementary recognized as a model Professional Learning Community at Work

Garrett Elementary, in the Hazelwood School District, was recently recognized by Solution Tree for its sustained success in raising student achievement. Garrett’s successful implementation of the Professional Learning Communities (PLC) at Work process was a major contributing factor in the improved achievement of its students. Garrett was one of about 200 schools and districts in the US and Canada to receive this honor.

Responding to news of the recognition, Dr. Erik Melton, principal of Garrett said, “My staff works hard every day to help our students succeed. We are honored to receive this recognition and we feel strongly about the path that our school is on.”

Ritenour Superintendent named Administrator of the Year by MIPA Ritenour Superintendent Dr. Chris Kilbride was named the 2016 Administrator of the Year by the Missouri Interscholastic Press Association (MIPA) for his outstanding support of Ritenour High School’s student journalism program.

MIPA’s judge praised Kilbride for bringing the district’s nationally-recognized high school journalism program to new heights since Ritenour High School opened its new Media Convergence Center in 2014.

The center is the home to the KRHS Media radio station, television studio, and creative convergence areas for video pro-

duction, student newspaper and yearbook.

Of particular note, the judge was impressed with Kilbride’s support of KRHS Media students’ coverage of national news that impacted their community.

“The St. Louis area and Missouri as a whole have faced significant challenges over the past year,” said the MIPA judge. “…Dr. Kilbride has shown no fear in allowing the students to report on some of the most important issues of their lives.

Indeed, the students’ reporting on race relations has attracted positive coverage in the St. Louis media — quite a feat.”

Lighthouse for the Blind wins $19.5 million contract from Defense Logistics Agency Lighthouse for the BlindSaint Louis (LHB), a notfor-profit manufacturing and packaging organization with a dedicated social service mission, has won a $19.5 million contract from the Defense Logistics Agency, which is the Department of Defense's largest logistics combat support agency.

One segment of the twophase, seven year, non-compete contact is for manufacturing, packaging, order fulfillment and shipping of paints, primers and latex paint. That segment is valued $17,545,856.

The other contract segment is for manufacturing, packaging, order fulfillment and shipping of corrosion preventative compounds. That segment is valued at $1,954,681.

John Thompson, president of Lighthouse for the Blind-Saint Louis, also known as LHB Industries., Inc., said, “Our entire team is extremely proud to be awarded this very significant contract. In addition, we are especially honored that Lt. Gen. Andrew E. Busch, director of the Defense Logistics Agency, personally visited our plants last week to meet and

talk with employees at every level.

“Not every company gets to meet a three-star general,” Thompson said. “We consider General’s Busch’s visit a testament to the high quality of our skilled employees and our diverse, high quality products.”

Brian Houser, LHB director of sales and marketing, said, “We received our initial incoming product orders from the DLA under the new contract the week of Feb. 8. All departments of the U.S. military will use these Lighthouse products, including the Air Force, Army, Navy, Marines and Coast Guard.”

LHB will not hire additional full-time employees in the near term, but will engage temporary or part time employees, as needed, to fulfill the DLA contact, Houser said.

LHB has a total of 47 legally blind employees at two manufacturing plants in St. Louis County; approximately 36 of that number will be involved with the DLA contract. Order entry and contract administration will occur at LHB’s headquarters plant in Overland; manufacturing will occur at

Each morning their drawers would be filled with clean clothes, socks and underpants; all neatly stacked and arranged in their dressers. But I never received this kind of recognition; no magazine write-up, no words of praise, not so much as even a high five much less a, “Thanks mom for washing my drawers and not forcing me to go commando during gym class.”

As the years passed, so too did the “thrill” of doing laundry. At times the washing would be left in one of these four stages. One: dirty in the hamper. Two: wet and washed but ignored and clinging up against the drum of the washer gathering mold. Three: dry but ignored lying cold and knotted up in the drum of the dryer. Four: clean, but piled up Fill in the blank squares in the grid, making left to wrinkle and take on the sure that every row, column and 3-by-3 box shape of the laundry basket. includes all the digits 1 through 9.

One time, the lint filter of the dryer had been ignored for so long that I was able to knit an entire sweater and two pot holders out of the fibers that had accumulated.

So I’m thrilled that men have taken an interest in this drudgery. I say, “Have at it!” You actually may earn the title of Laundermeister. But caution, while you may master the fine intricacies of the washroom, don’t get too haughty in your achievements because you’ll still never be able to fold a fitted sheet.

I heard an interesting report the other day; men are taking over the laundry in greater numbers.

It’s getting all kinds of acclaim and they are washing and fluffing and folding their little hearts out.

Apparently they are getting involved in the process so much that they now even have an opinion on the smell of their detergent, and laundry marketers are paying attention. Coming to a supermarket near you, expect future scents to include fragrances such as, just-oiled engine parts, morning lawn mower clippings and fresh off the BBQ in either, grilled pork loin or bacon cheeseburger.

Well whooptydoodley-doo! I’d say it’s a tad late for all of this hubbub. Where was this when I needed it?

Cottleville St. Patrick’s ‘Run for the Helmet’ had firefighters running in full gear You heard me right, several of the firefighters from different engine houses took on the 7K run (4.3496 miles) wearing gear that they have on every time they protect us from different hazards.

They ran with about 45 to 70 pounds of extra weight throughout the streets of Cottleville with tremendous ovations from the onlookers on the route.

The winner of the 7K run came in at about 24 minutes and the first firefighter to cross the line came in at 48.

The visiting West Michigan Ironmen came out of the locker room ready to play and led the Raiders 28-7 after the first quarter. Coach Corey Bethany rallied his squad to cut the lead of the Ironmen to 11 by the half 35-24.

The third quarter saw the home team more than double their score to take a 58-54 lead going into the fourth quarter.

Early in the last quarter, the West Michigan team led by two points by the Raiders defense shut the door and the hometown team won the game with a 75-68 score to improve their record to 2-0.

The next home contest is when the Cincinnati Bulldogs come to town April 3 for a 3:05 p.m. game.

Senior Hannah Perryman was named the Great Lakes Valley Conference Pitcher of the Week in softball, by the league office.

She went 4-0 last week for UMSL, which posted a 5-0 record and had a 0.26 ERA, surrendering just one run in 27 innings pitched while striking out 45.

Senior Austin Simokaitis was named the Great Lakes Valley Conference Pitcher of the Week in baseball for his accomplishments.

He had a hand in all three UMSL victories against Illinois Springfield last week in nonconference action. Simokaitis also recorded three saves while limiting the Prairie Stars to .182 batting in three innings. He struck out five batters during that time, allowed two hits, and did not issue a walk.

Spring into Easter with reinvented family recipes Vegetable casseroles and carrot cake have been Easter menu mainstays for decades, but with the majority of millennials now hosting holiday family gatherings, retro dishes are getting a flavorful facelift with new ingredients and flavor twists.

Chef Kevan Vetter of the McCormick Kitchens offers these tips to put a new spin on Easter favorites: • Liven up the Easter ham with a spicy-sweet glaze of apricot jam, pineapple juice and chipotle chili pepper. Brush on a spiral-cut ham before roasting in the oven.

• Upgrade a traditional vegetable casserole by sprinkling a layer of cheddar cheese and topping with potato tots. Bake until the tots are crisp and golden brown and the casserole is bubbly.

• Combine two classic Easter desserts in one; swirl carrot cake batter into a smooth and creamy cheesecake base with a hint of lemon. Bake and cut into bars.

Carrot Cake Swirled Cream Cheese Bars Prep time: 15 minutes | Cook time: 40 minutes | Servings: 24 Ingredients: 1 cup plus 2 tablespoons flour, divided 2 cups sugar, divided 1 1/2 teaspoons McCormick Ground Cinnamon 1 teaspoon baking soda 1/2 teaspoon McCormick Ground Nutmeg 1/4 teaspoon salt 2/3 cup vegetable oil 4 eggs, divided 2 teaspoons McCormick Pure Vanilla Extract 1 1/2 cups finely grated carrots 3 packages (8 ounces each) cream cheese, softened 1/4 cup milk 1 teaspoon McCormick Pure Lemon Extract Directions: Preheat oven to 325°F. Mix 1 cup each of flour and sugar, cinnamon, baking soda, nutmeg and salt in large bowl. Add oil, 2 eggs, vanilla extract and carrots; mix well. Spread 1/2 of the batter into greased and floured 13x9-inch baking pan. Reserve remaining batter. Set aside.

Beat cream cheese and remaining 1 cup sugar in

another large bowl with electric mixer on medium speed until well blended. Add milk, remaining 2 tablespoons flour and lemon extract; beat until well blended. Add remaining 2 eggs, 1 at a time, beating on low speed after each addition just until blended.

Drop spoonfuls of cream cheese mixture and reserved carrot cake batter, alternately, over carrot cake batter in pan. Cut through several times with knife for marble effect.

Apricot Pineapple Chipotle Glazed Ham Prep time: 10 minutes | Cook time: 1 hour, 45 minutes | Servings: 24 Ingredients: 1 bone-in spiral-cut ham, about 10 pounds 1 cup apricot jam 1/2 cup pineapple juice 3/4 teaspoon McCormick Chipotle Chili Pepper 1/2 teaspoon McCormick Garlic Powder

Cheesy Broccoli Cauliflower Tater-Topped Casserole Prep time: 20 minutes | Cook time: 55 minutes | Servings: 14 Ingredients: 1 package (16 ounces) frozen broccoli florets, thawed 1 package (16 ounces) frozen cauliflower florets, thawed 2 tablespoons butter 1 cup chopped onion 2 tablespoons flour 1 teaspoon McCormick Perfect Pinch Italian Seasoning 1 teaspoon McCormick Garlic Salt 1/4 teaspoon McCormick Coarse Ground Black Pepper 1 1/4 cups milk 4 ounces (1/2 package) cream cheese, cubed 1/4 cup grated Parmesan cheese 2 cups shredded sharp Cheddar cheese 1 pound frozen fried potato tots Directions: Preheat oven to 400°F. Cut up any large broccoli or cauliflower florets into bite-size pieces. Set aside.

Melt butter in large skillet on medium heat. Add

onion; cook and stir about 5 minutes or until tender. Stir in flour, Italian seasoning, garlic salt and pepper. Add milk; cook and stir until thickened and bubbly. Add cream cheese and Parmesan cheese; cook and stir until cream cheese is melted. Add vegetables; toss gently to coat. Spoon into 2-quart

baking dish. Sprinkle evenly with Cheddar cheese and top with potato tots.

Bake 45 to 55 minutes or until heated through and potato tots are golden brown and crispy.

“Choose Your Own Love Story” is an interactive dating adventure Without a doubt, writer/actress Ilyse Mimoun has written a book for all the struggling singles out there.

“Choose Your Own Love Story” allows the reader to navigate the increasingly complicated dating world by making 50 different choices.

Based on your selections, there are 20 possible endings, happy and otherwise.

“I had written a book of short stories that were all relationship and datingthemed. But they were wildly different: they had people with different ages and vastly different things happening, even though they were unified by the same theme,” Mimoun explained when reached by phone for an interview. “My agent wanted me to revamp it, basically because it’s not as easy to sell short stories.”

Mimoun was brainstorming and pacing back-and-forth in her room when inspiration struck: “I was noticing my old ‘Choose Your Own Adventure’ stories, my old children’s books on my bookshelf.

And that’s how I sort of alighted on the idea.”

Social media and dating Facebook, Twitter and online dating

sites have put a new spin on the dating game. While In - ternet dating is in the book, the author points out that “Choose Your Own Love Story” is more about relationships in general and figuring out who you are.

“I think the thing about Internet dating is it presents this feeling that we are totally in control, and we have all these choices, but in fact things are just as unpredictable and even more lawless now in a certain way in the ‘New Frontier,’” she explained.

Mimoun also explains out that dating rules were much clearer years ago.

“If the guy didn’t call me back on the day after the date, he wasn’t into me. And now it’s like ‘What if he just sends you a text or says something on Facebook?’ Is that less responsive than a call? Or is it like nobody calls anymore?

It’s hard to figure out.

As the years go on with it, there’s new laws, new unspoken, unwritten laws being devised. I felt like it was a really ‘no

rules’ frontier,” she said.

Online dating definitely offers men and women a chance to enhance their personal profiles, a topic which is covered in “Choose Your Own Love Story.”

“There’s a moment where the protagonist cannot fathom that every single guy claims to love to work hard and play hard. How is that possible? When I was online dating, almost every male profile said that. It was so strange. And they all said ‘I am finally coming into the wealth and prosperity I always wanted. And I am ready to settle down.’ Really? You can really create a fantasy avatar of yourself,” Mimoun said.

The author points out, though, that she didn’t intend to write an expose on the dating world. “It goes in many weirder directions. In one story, she ends up a criminal; she could end up a Buddhist monk. She ends up in Greece. Sometimes she stays at home; she jet sets,” she said. “I think it’s still fun if you are in a relationship to go back and remember the joys and horrors. It’s rough out there.”
