St. Ferdinand’s annual barbeque and basketball fundraiser raises thousands of dollars for community members in great need By Charlotte Beard Since 2011, the St. Ferdinand Church, who also host the free annual Thanksgiving Day Dinner, has been hosting the St. Ferdinand Basketball Tournament and barbeque fundraiser to support various families in its local community. This year, the annual event began Feb. 29 and will continue through March 29 on Saturdays and Sundays 10 a.m. to 7 p.m. at St. Ferdinand Church located at 1735 Charbonier Road in Florissant. Joe Eagan, a parishioner of St. Ferdinand and Florissant Council Member for Ward 3 states that the annual event has raised over $130,000 since it began. Eagan also stated that in addition to donations, funds to purchase the food that is sold at the tournaments come from sponsors who purchase banners to advertise in the gym during the event, as well as ad purchases for the event’s ad book. Some of the items on the basketball tourna-

ment menu include ribs, pork steak, pulled pork, hot dogs, brats, hamburgers, nachos and sides such as baked beans, coleslaw, and mac n’ cheese. Attendees who purchase food during the event help raise the funds that go to the year’s beneficiary. For a comprehensive list of menu items, visit the Facebook page. “If you can’t make it, we ask you to keep Natalie (our beneficiary) in your prayers, that’s what she really needs right now. We hope (people) come by and buy some barbeque from us and watch some of the games but the most important thing is to keep Natalie in your prayers right now.” Natalie Pizzimenti, mother of a six-yearold son, was diagnosed in 2017 with EHE, Epithelioid Hemangioendothelioma, a rare cancer that grows from the cells that make up the blood vessels. She began chemotherapy treatment and radiation in 2017 and since

that time has undergone multiple biopsies, tests, treatments, and surgeries. Sources also state that some tumors have shrunk but others have been found throughout her body, including the return of a tumor in her liver. Eagan, who was also St. Ferdinand’s first beneficiary in 2011 after he was shot in the face in the line of duty in 2010 as an officer for Maryland Heights, states that each year’s beneficiary comes from referrals. “Our beneficiary last year was from Sacred Heart. The beneficiary happened to know Natalie and mentioned her name. We did research – that’s how we chose Natalie. If we can, we like to have someone from the Florissant area or Hazelwood. We do a lot of praying and after prayer and lots of conversation we come up with a beneficiary every year.” See ‘GRILLING’ page 2
