By Charlotte Beard After 50 years of service, Bob Laramie, Superintendent for Florissant’s Parks Division punched the timeclock for the last time on March 16. “The name Robert Laramie will always be synonymous with our beautiful Florissant Park System,” said Florissant Mayor Thomas Schneider. “His leadership inspired countless Parks Maintenance employees both full time and part time. He had a ‘Can Do’ attitude that benefited not only the parks department but all departments including police. Whatever needed to get done Bob Laramie could be counted on to deliver.” Though Laramie has retired and will spend time focusing on his health, he plans to spend his retirement years in Florissant with exception to the time that he gets away to fish, hunt, and enjoy life. Laramie was born Aug. 8, 1947. Laramie also has an older sister and a younger sister who is now deceased. His father and mother moved to Florissant, where the Laramie family has a great history, when he was two years old. His great-grandfather, who fought in the Civil War, owned over 40 acres of land in the northwest region of Florissant. Laramie states that he isn’t certain, but he believes during that time war veterans were given land when they returned home. Other Laramie family members that made their mark on Florissant were his uncle Irvin Laramie who served as councilman in the 1930s and 1940s, and his cousin Mel Laramie who served as councilman for a period. Laramie also had many extended family members who were instrumental in the construction of many Florissant shops and homes, as well as the development of the business district. Laramie received his elementary education at Sacred Heart Parish in Old Town Florissant. From there he spent his freshman year at

Florissant Junior High before graduating high school at McCluer. “I walked out of McCluer High School in 1966,” stated Laramie. “I saw an ad in a little neighborhood journal…an ad for a maintenance guy for the parks’ maintenance in the city of Florissant. So, I hitchhiked out there. I can remember the first day I walked in. I walked through the door and I knew some of the guys that worked there. They were all old Florissant residents. I went there in January 1966.” Laramie had hitchhiked to the Park Maintenance Facility in Koch Park. The city of Florissant hired him immediately. In September of that same year Laramie married his high school sweetheart, Michelle. Though Laramie expressed his passion for the service he was giving the city, he found an

opportunity for a higher paying job. “My dad worked for a piano moving company. They were paying $2.25 an hour. In June 1967 I went to work with my dad. My dad was like I was with the city—always [at work] an hour early. In January 1968 I got in a bad car wreck and broke my back. I couldn’t move pianos anymore. I was out of work. I tried to get a job at the post office. I worked part time at Save Mart,” Laramie said. One day a friend of his who worked for the city of Florissant contacted him about some maintenance positions that were open. Laramie was excited for the opportunity to return to work for the city. “I liked that job. It’s the greatest job in the world for as I’m concerned,” he said. See ‘SERVICE’ page 2
