A collaboration between Ferguson Fire Department and Boy Scouts gives youth a glimpse of emergency rescue careers By Sara Hardin Youth in Ferguson are getting a glimpse into what life is like as a firefighter through an Explorer Post at the Ferguson Fire Department, put in place as part of a collaboration between the Ferguson Fire Department and the Boy Scouts of America Greater St. Louis Area council. The Exploring program provides an opportunity for young men and women ages 14-20 to gain real-life experience and explore career options through hands-on learning. Youth involved in the Ferguson Fire Department Explorer Post attend biweekly meetings and participate in ridealongs and firefighter training, such as basic rescue and EMT skills. Participants are able to learn from department personnel about the firefighting field, gain insight on the potential of firefighting as a career and understand how the department is involved in their community. “It’s a breath of fresh air to see them excited to be here and excited to be a part of the city of Ferguson,” said Douglas Patrick, a fireman with the Ferguson Fire Department. An Eagle Scout himself, Patrick ex-

plained that exposing Ferguson’s youth to positive sides of their community is an aspect of the program that proves to be just as important as exposing them to career opportunities. “We started this program as outreach to the community. Our department has a heavy background in scouting. We thought it was a good way to reach out to the youth in the community, to guide youth into this field,” said Patrick. “[Firefighting] has been a very good career for all of us. The youth that we have participating are really excited about being here and enjoy being a part of the department. Seeing these young men and women come into this program wanting to be a part of us and wanting to further their lives in the fire service has been a wonderful thing.” Several firemen currently with the Ferguson Fire Department went through the Explorer program at the St. Charles County post. This, on top of there being multiple Eagle Scouts in the department, solidified the decision to bring an Explorer Post to Ferguson. As several new scout groups are be-

ing implemented into the North St. Louis County area, hopes are high that the reintroduction of the Boy Scouts into the area will increase exposure of the Explorer program and all of its benefits to the community’s youth. See SCOUTING OUT FIREFIGHTING page 2
