Around Town Distracted Driving Awareness Month Distracted driving has become an all-too-common occurrence in our society, so much so that it has inspired the National Safety Council (NSC) to designate April as Distracted Driving Awareness Month.

Annually, car crashes are responsible for 3.5 million serious injuries and 33,000 fatalities, and are the No. 1 cause of work-related deaths. The NSC estimates 24% of all motor vehicle crashes involve cell phone use.

“Not only do motorists who use cell phones put themselves at risk, but they are also risking the lives and well-being of those around them,” McCollister said. “If we want to minimize the amount of accidents and casualties on our roadways, it’s imperative that the public begins taking this matter more seriously.”

McCollister and the NSC support a complete cell phone ban for all motorists and urge the public to use this month as an opportunity speak to their loved ones about the dangers of distracted driving.

SLCL Offers Money Smart Week Programs St. Louis County Library will participate in Money Smart Week 2013 by offering programs for children and adults from April 19-30.

Money Smart Week is sponsored by the Greater St. Louis Financial Education Collaborative including non-profit organizations and businesses throughout the St. Louis metro area. The library will offer Money Smart programs for both adults and children at nine branches.

All the programs are free, but they do require registration by calling 314.994.3300. A full schedule is included below.

Money Smart Week (MSW) is a public awareness campaign created in 2002 by the Federal Reserve Bank of Chicago. The goal of MSW is to promote financial literacy to all ages, demographics and income levels. MSW partners provide free, educational programming. Partners are not allowed to promote their own goods and services at MSW activities.

SLCL Employee Publishes Teen Novel Each year thousands of new books arrive at St. Louis County Library. One book, which is due to arrive in April, is being anticipated more than the others. If He Had Been With Me was written by one of the library’s own employees, part time circulation assistant, Laura Rosener. Her pen name is Laura Rowlin.

If He Had Been With Me, is a teen love story that takes place in St. Louis. Kirkus reviews says this about it, “The finely drawn characters capture readers' attention in this debut.”

The book describes a lifelong friendship between two teens, Finn and Autumn. Here is the description from www.qbd. com.au: “A love story spanning the history of two teenagers’ lives and all the moments when if one little thing had been different, their futures would have been together instead of apart.” It is a sad story of what-ifs, and with all the angst a real teen relationship experiences. The story came to Laura in a dream from which she awoke, got up and immediately wrote the first chapter.

Laura, who has been with SLCL for three years, started writing when she was 16. She has B.A. in English with an emphasis in Creative Writing from Missouri State University where she contributed short stories to the Moon City Review. If He Had… is not her first novel, but it is the first to be published.

“Writing the first draft was like giving birth,” Laura says. Several re-writes later, she and many of her co-workers, among others, look forward to the book’s publication. There are already a few dozen holds on the copies St. Louis County Library has ordered.

Laura moved with her parents to St. Louis as a child. She attended McCluer North High School. She and her husband live in South St. Louis.

Get Outta Town: Celebrate “Common Place” at Earth Day Festival Gather in St. Louis’ favorite common place for this year’s Earth Day celebration on April 21 from 11am - 6pm on the Muny Grounds of Forest Park. At the 24th annual St. Louis Earth Day Festival, enjoy three stages of entertainment, learn about sustainable products and services offered by local businesses, meet area non-profits that share the mission of Earth Day, and participate in a variety of hands-on educational activities.

A collection event for hard-to-recycle items returns to the Festival for a third year, including the DEA Medication Take-Back Initiative. The Recycling Extravaganza will take place in the parking lot of the St. Louis Community College Forest Park campus, off Oakland Avenue, 10am – 4pm A full list of acceptable items, including everything from mattresses and appliances to batteries and carpet, is updated regularly online so you can plan your spring cleaning accordingly.

Start the celebration early at Earth Day Eve – a family-friendly evening with food and music on the Festival grounds, 4pm - 7pm at the corner of McKinley and Theatre Drives in the Earth Day Café neighborhood, presented by Wells Fargo Advisors. 5th Annual Trash Bash a Success

Save on Energy-Efficient Appliances

67 volunteers turned out at St. Ferdinand Park, despite cold temperatures and an imminent record-setting snowfall, to pick up trash at several sites throughout the City.

The event was part of the 5th Annual Trash Bash which is organized every year by MSD, Great Rivers Greenway, Trailnet, Missouri American Water, St. Louis County and various municipalities and agencies, including Florissant. This year was the first time that the City hosted a registration area from which the cleanup teams were dispatched. Other registration areas included Old Chain of Rocks Bridge and Creve Coeur Park.

Litter pickup sites included the top of the creek bank at St. Ferdinand Park, John Knox Church, and along Paddock Creek behind several properties near the intersection of Parker Road and Derhake Road. Mayor Thomas P. Schneider would like to congratulate City Engineer Tim Barrett for coordinating this very successful event. The Mayor thanks everyone that contributed. The event was staffed by City employees from the Health, Parks & Engineering Departments along with volunteers from MSD and Missouri American Water.

Missouri citizens and out-of-state consumers shopping in Missouri will be able to benefit from Missouri's fifth Show-Me Green Sales Tax Holiday in April.

"The Green Sales Tax Holiday will be an excellent time for consumers to buy an energy-efficient appliance," said David Overfelt, president of the Missouri Retailers Association. "For one week, the state sales tax won't be charged on qualified appliances, and in many areas the local sales tax won't be charged as well."

The Show-Me Green Sales Tax Holiday runs from April 19 through April 25. People who purchase new ENERGY STAR® qualified appliances in Missouri during the holiday will save at least 4.225 percent off the purchase. The reduced price represents the elimination of the state's sales tax from the purchase.

Many local governmental entities have also opted to participate in the holiday. This means qualified purchases in those areas will be exempt not just from the state sales tax, but also city, county and special district sales taxes. Eleven counties, 51 cities and 18 special districts have opted to participate in the holiday. Three of the counties, seven of

the cities and eight of the taxing districts are in the Kansas City metropolitan area (Cass, Clay, Jackson and Platte counties).

To qualify for the savings, the actual purchase of the appliance must take place during the sales tax holiday between April 19 and April 25. Any qualified appliance must have the ENERGY STAR® label on it. ENERGY STAR® is a joint program of the U.S. Environmental Protection Agency and the U.S. Department of Energy.

ENERGY STAR®-labeled appliances that qualify for the sales tax exemption are: Clothes washers, Refrigerators, Freezers, Dishwashers, Water heaters, Furnaces, Air conditioners, Heat pumps The sales tax exemption only applies to the first $1,500 on each appliance. If an appliance costs more than $1,500, the regular sales tax rate is in effect for any of the purchase price above $1,500.

Pay-What-You-Can Lunch Three years ago, Panera Bread and the Panera Bread Foundation embarked on a social experiment—the Panera Cares Community Cafes. These locations are non-profit cafes of shared responsibility with no set prices, just suggested donation amounts. Now, inspired by the success of these cafes and their ability to help people in need, elevate the discussion about food insecurity and provide a vehicle for people to help one another, the company is launching a Panera Cares menu item in all 48 metropolitan-area Saint Louis Bread Co. bakery-cafes.

The “Meal of Shared Responsibility,” as the item is called, is Turkey Chili in a Sourdough Bread Bowl. It has no set price and provides a delicious, wholesome entree, with dignity, to anyone—regardless of their means.

“When we launched our community cafe concept three years ago, skeptics thought that too many people would take advantage and too few would share in the responsibility of sustaining the effort,” said Ron Shaich, founder, chairman, and co-CEO of Panera Bread and president of the Panera Bread Foundation. “But there are now five non-profit community cafes across the country and they’re all working. They elevate the issue of food insecurity, they offer a vehicle for those with the means to help those with a need, and they help nourish their local communities. Based on their success, we feel confident in attempting this escalation of our efforts against hunger and challenging the St. Louis community to take care of each other.”

To do so, the Saint Louis Bread Co. cafes will offer three payment options for the Meal of Shared Responsibility. First, a customer may pay the suggested amount. Second, if a customer has the means, they

may pay more to help cover the cost of the meal for someone who cannot afford to pay.

Third, if a customer has the need, they may pay what they can.

Panera Bread decided to launch this program in St. Louis where the company has its roots, its headquarters and where the first Panera Cares community cafe opened.

For the Meal of Shared Responsibility, Panera Bread was looking for an item that was nutrient-dense, delicious and self-contained. The Turkey Chili in a Sourdough Bread Bowl met those criteria.

Panera Bread has worked to help combat the problem of hunger for 25 years, since it began donating unsold bread and baked goods to local organizations. Under its DayEnd Dough-Nation™ program, Panera bakery-cafes nationally last year donated a retail value of approximately $100 million worth of unsold bread and baked goods to help neighbors in need.

Recent Greater North County Chamber Ribbon Cutting: Goldkamp Heating, Cooling & Duct Cleaning

Bipartisan “Startups for Soldiers Act” Missouri Secretary of State Jason Kander recently announced legislation aimed at helping servicemen and women become Missouri entrepreneurs.

House Bill 918, the Startups for Soldiers Act, would eliminate all fees associated with starting a business for members of the Missouri National Guard and active duty military returning home to Missouri.

“As a veteran, it is frustrating to see so many soldiers have trouble landing the jobs they’re seeking after they return from deployment. The skills we learn in the military translate to every field; it’s just difficult to make sure employers know that,” Kander said. “By making it a little easier for members of the military to start their

own businesses, we can help make sure we are properly utilizing the talent they develop in the military when they come home.”

The bill is being sponsored by Rep. Jeff Roorda, D-Jefferson County, who filed the bill earlier this week. The bill is co-sponsored by Rep. Charlie Davis, R-Webb City, the Chairman of the Veterans Committee.

“Our men and women in uniform are some of the most well-trained workers we have,” Roorda said. “Small business owners with military experience are the most likely group to hire veterans.

So by making it easier for those in the military to start their own businesses, my hope is that more Missouri veterans find employment that properly recognizes their skills.”

Lafayette St. in Florissant. Sacred Heart Pastor Monsignor Mark Ullrich then gave a blessing upon the new location.

Matt Goldkamp, CEO of the company, took us on a tour of the newly renovated building which now hosts their roomy office space along with a large working area and warehouse. In the future, Goldkamp will be adding a showroom featuring their fireplaces.

The Fur Centre of St. Louis has made the move to a new location at 7901 Clayton Road. John Hanlon, president of the Fur Centre says the new location is “…a friendlier, more welcoming space” that improves on the old site in several ways. The store is now located near the Galleria in the former Byron Cade building, which makes it convenient for shoppers. Proximity to an intersection makes getting in and out of the parking lot much easier, and the building features plenty of room, including 5,300 square feet of space on the first floor, 1,750-square-foot on the second, a 2,200-square-foot outdoor deck and storage area, and a 23-car parking lot.

Hazelwood Students Learn With Skype In an effort to help inspire and recruit students to register for advanced placement, AP, classes in high school, English classes at Hazelwood East High School and Hazelwood East Middle School recently shared lessons through a series of Skype sessions.

During the Skype sessions, students in Deionza Shelton’s AP English class at HEHS and students in Alicia Ragusa’s eighth grade English class at HEMS participated in Socratic seminars.

Socratic seminars are formal discussions based on a text. Leaders asked open-ended questions to help spur the discussion. Within the context of the discussions, students must listen closely to the comments of others, thinking critically for themselves; and articulate their own answers and responses to the answers of others.

Shelton and Ragusa’s shared interest in their students’ literacy development and critical thinking skills helped lead to the Skype sessions. They had

the goal to inspire and motivate students to appreciate texts, to actively engage texts and to read texts frequently.

“We know that modeling is an invaluable instructional strategy; that’s why the Skyping sessions were important,” said Shelton. “Students were able to ‘see’ students in practice as thinkers.”

Ragusa said she hoped the Skype sessions would help make AP classes more appealing to her students.

Ragusa and Shelton both felt the Skype sessions helped meet the goal of inspiring and recruiting students to register for AP class, and look forward to the possibility of continuing the exercise.

Hazelwood Teacher Finalist for National Award

Lisa McPherson, Cold Water Elementary School fifth grade teacher, was recently recognized as a 2012 State Finalist in the “Presidential Awards for Excellence in Mathematics and Science Teaching” (PAEMST) by the Association of State Supervisors of Mathematics and the Council of State Science Supervisors. McPherson has taught science at Cold Water Elementary for 18 years.

Shaun Bates, Missouri Department of Elementary and Secondary Education science education director, presented McPherson with a trophy and a framed certificate during a recent HSD mathematics and science professional development session. Dr. Crystal Reiter, assistant superintendent for learning, and Carrie Launius, science learning facilitator, along with approximately 100 of her peers, were all present during the special recognition.

Superintendent Dr. Grayling Tobias stopped by a short time later to personally shake hands and to congratulate McPherson on receiving this prestigious honor.

When asked what she enjoys most about teaching, McPherson responded, “The thing I love the most about teaching is inspiring a love of learning in children. My job is making what students learn meaningful and relevant to them. I love the ‘aha’ moments when students get something new.”

According to its website, PAEMST awards are the nation's highest honors for teachers of mathematics and science, including computer science. Awardees serve as models for their colleagues, inspiration to their communities, and leaders in the improvement of mathematics and science education. Since 1983, more than 4,200 teachers have been recognized for their contributions in the classroom and to their profession.

McPherson will now move on to compete with two other state finalists for the National PAEMST. If selected, the awardee receives a certificate signed by the president of the United States and a $10,000 award from the National Science Foundation. Awardees and their guests are honored during events that take place in Washington, DC. These events include an award ceremony, celebratory receptions, professional development programs, and discussions with policymakers on how to improve mathematics and science education.

The woods behind their house provide solace for 11-year-old Annie and her little brother Rew in a thriller that unfolds during the Iran hostage crisis. You’ll hold your breath reading Zebra Forest, by Adina Rishe Gewirtz.

The forest is a leafy oasis, a hideaway that changes with the season and separates the children’s ramshackle house from a state prison on the outskirts of Sunshine, population 2,000.

Annie and Rew don’t have it easy. Their mother deserted them when they were small and their dad was “killed by an angry man.” That’s what their dad’s mom tells them. Gran cares for them, if you can call it that. She isn’t well, often escapes to her room for days, leaving the shopping to Annie, and mold growing on dishes in the kitchen.

Gran also doesn’t much care if the kids go to school, but Annie is a good student nonetheless, and careful to tell the lies that keep her out of trouble with the truant officer that comes to check on her and Rew when they skip classes.

Late one night, someone breaks into their house and the children’s lives are jettisoned into chaos — suddenly another hostage situation has developed — one of danger, love and confusion.

With its notable voice cast and eyepopping computer graphics, The Croods should have been a lot more entertaining, especially for the adults in the audience. As it turns out, this prehistoric tale definitely will charm the chil- The Croods photo courtesy of DreamWorks Animation dren, but it might just scene, Crug feels like his authority and intelligence are put mom and dad to sleep.

Emma Stone also is charming as Eep, the teenager a small, prehistoric family. To survive their harsh living conditions, Crug sets up hard and fast rules for his who thinks her family is holding her back. Eep is ready family to follow. These guidelines include hiding when and willing to go out after dark and start living, even if that makes her an attractive target for predators. Eep it’s dark and avoiding anything new.

Eep (Emma Stone), Crug’s rebellious daughter, has lots of feminine charm but, as Gy finds outs, she’s grows weary of hiding in caves, however. She wants also extremely strong and bold.

Cloris Leachman gets some laughs as to explore and learn more about the world. This cavegirl gets her chance one day when Gy (Ryan Reynolds) Gran, the eldest member of the clan. Gary Baute Monsters Offense Production Falls Short The Missouri Monsters, your professional indoor football team, dropped Sunday’s contest against the visiting Florida Tarpons 42-20 at the Family Arena.

Impressive on offense for the Monsters was quarterback Tavares Woodley who tossed two touchdown passes. One was an 18-yard connection to wide receiver Dello Davis. The second was to wide receiver Kevin Brown who caught only one pass in the game but good enough for a 16-yard score.

Running back Robert Elliot rushed seven times in the game for 43-yards and scored once on a 32-yard sprint.

Kicker Carter Rethwisc nailed two of three extra points.

With a combined score of 9.7875, Zabawa finished in fourth place overall in the event on the vault. Three gymnasts from Texas Woman’s University scored a 9.8500 to take first in that event. Floyd finished with a 9.7500 on the beam to finish in a tie for seventh place overall. On Friday, she scored a season-high 9.850 to qualify for the finals on Sunday.

Time for Tapenades

The ripe olive is one of the most versatile foods in the pantry. While delicious on its own, olives also add flavor to a number of dishes from soups and salads to appetizers and entrees. One dish, that features olives predominantly and is as versatile as its main ingredient, is tapenade.

Tapenade originated in Provence, France, as a simple mixture of chopped olives, with various herbs and spices and is often used as a spread on crackers or a condiment. There are many different recipes for tapenade, and the first step is selecting the type of olive to use. Green and black California Ripe Olives are perfect because of their mild taste and ability to blend well with other flavors. To ensure you are purchasing California Ripe Olives, check the label to see if they’re a product of the U.S. Tapenades are as varied as they are delicious, with consistencies that range from a spreadable paste to a chunky, salsa-like mixture. And their flavors can span the globe, from Greek and Mexican to Asian and French.

A simple ripe olive base is all you need to create a world of flavor.

Here are is a fresh approach to tapenade, inspired from where the olives come from—California—and includes garlic, shallots and fresh basil. Spicy Asian Tapenade

California Wine Country Tapenade Makes 8 to 10 servings Ingredients: 1/2 cup chopped shallots 1/4 cup chopped smoked sun-dried tomatoes 2 tablespoons extra virgin olive oil 2 tablespoons white balsamic vinegar 2 cloves garlic, minced 1 6-ounce can California Green Ripe Olives, well drained 1 6-ounce can California Black Ripe Olives, well drained 1/4 cup lightly packed fresh basil

Sea salt and freshly ground pepper, to taste Crackers or toasted baguette slices Directions: Place shallots, sun-dried tomatoes, olive oil, vinegar and garlic in a food processor and pulse on and off until finely chopped.

Add olives, basil, salt and pepper and pulse again until chopped. Cover and chill for 1 hour. (May be prepared 1 day ahead.) Serve with crackers or toasted baguette slices.

Mexican Tapenade Makes 8 to 10 servings Ingredients: 2 6-ounce cans California Ripe Olives, well drained 1/4 cup lightly packed fresh cilantro leaves 2 tablespoons extra virgin olive oil 2 tablespoons lime juice 2 cloves garlic, minced 2 green onions, sliced 1 canned chipotle pepper plus 2 teaspoons adobo sauce from can Good quality tortilla chips

Directions: Drain olives well and place in a food processor with all remaining ingredients except chips. Pulse on and off until finely chopped. Cover and chill for 1 hour. (May be prepared 1 day ahead.) Serve with tortilla chips or use as a sandwich spread or in quesadillas or tacos.

Makes 8 to 10 servings Ingredients: Tapenade: 2 6-ounce cans California Ripe Olives, well drained 1/2 cup minced onion 2 tablespoons olive or peanut oil 2 tablespoons rice vinegar (unseasoned) 1 1/2 tablespoons grated fresh ginger 1 tablespoon Sriracha sauce 1/4 teaspoon sesame oil 2 cloves garlic, minced Crispy Won Ton Dippers: 24 square won ton wrappers, each cut into 2 triangles Olive oil cooking spray Sea salt to taste Crispy Won Ton Cups: 24 square won ton wrappers Olive oil cooking spray Directions: Place all tapenade ingredients in a food processor and pulse on and off until finely chopped. Cover and chill for 1 hour.

Meanwhile for dippers, preheat oven to 400°F and line 2 baking sheets with foil.

Cut won ton wrappers in half and place on baking sheets; coat with olive oil spray and season lightly with salt. Bake for 5 minutes or until golden brown.

For cups, preheat oven to 350°F. Spray won ton wrappers on both sides with olive oil cooking spray. Press into 24 mini muffin cups, pressing all the way into the bottom.

Bake for 10 to 12 minutes or until golden brown; let cool.

Where Are the Parents?

After Collinsville passed the “Sagging Pants” law some time ago, it was almost a foregone conclusion someone would object with claims it violates First Amendment rights. The first amendment is as follows: “Congress shall make no law respecting an establishment of religion, or prohibiting the free exercise thereof; or abridging the freedom of speech, or of the press; or the right of the people peaceably to assemble, and to petition the Government for a redress of grievances.”

It doesn’t mention sagging pants, but it’s no surprise someone would object.

Every afternoon, I watched a teenaged boy from two doors down walk past with his britches down below his skinny derriére. He had his head down as if admiring his bizarre costume that made me think he escaped a nearby asylum.

Perhaps he was only watching lest the shorts fall the rest of the way and trip him.

After he walked past and opened his front door one afternoon, a large arm shot out and jerked him inside. It reminded me of an old movie showing a hook slithering out to snatch an unappreciated performer from a Vaudeville stage.

Before the door slammed shut, I heard some loud smacks and yelling. It sounded as if whoever belonged to that arm was extremely upset with the saggypants teenager. I never saw him again. Hopefully, he isn’t buried under a flower bed.

I remember the teenage fads of my boyhood. Of course, being male, the one I liked best were short dresses worn by girls. For boys, it was the collar up and “Ducks Butt“ hairdos. I tried the hairdo, and my father demonstrated his objection with a scissors. I suspect the short dresses on the girls were often donned between leaving home and arriving at school.

However, I can’t imagine showing up with my shorts hanging below my quit-

it. Some would say I might do it if I were a present-day teenager. It’s doubtful, but my folks would have found out anyway, and I may have ended up under a flower bed as well.

And that, my friends, is the real problem here and in Collinsville. Show me a boy with his shorts sagging below his rump, and I’ll show you a kid whose parents are remiss in bringing up boys…or perhaps aren’t present at all. I’ll also show you a candidate for a dropout Ogre Burger employee with shiny rings hanging from greasy anatomical appendages.

I dislike corporal punishment because it’s too often applied instead of reasoning. However, it’s hard to reason with embarrassingly vulgar dress habits.

Sometimes parents are left with no choice. I wasn’t as apprehensive of the local sheriff as I was of my folks. In those days, the real punishment began when I got home. We had a woodshed—a real one. My father didn’t have a razor strap, but he did have a leather belt. It raised some lengthy welts on my backside, that same backside today’s teenagers deem to show off while their cargo shorts hang below as if to accent unbridled vulgarity.

As with teachers, the law is left with doing what some parents are not…proving once again, the ability to have children doesn’t always qualify one to raise them.

Collinsville cops didn’t write any citations. Perhaps parents discovered a better cure for stupidity was to whack the backside of their saggy-pants youth since the pants were already down…
