By Sara Hardin The 9th Annual Baby Kid Expo will be taking place on Saturday, May 2 at the St. Charles Convention Center. The free event will run from 9 a.m. – 4 p.m. and will offer an abundance of fun activities for kids, as well as over 100 businesses with tons of helpful and important information for parents. “The Baby Kid Expo is a one-stop shop for the community to come and learn about what’s available in our area to make lives more fun, easier, or to just help them with this job of parenting,” said Heather Deatz, Owner and Show Producer of the Baby Kid Expo. “It’s a great way to connect families with helpful businesses that parents may not have been previously aware of.” The event will feature entertainment that is focused on educating kids about everything from the importance of staying active, to how to stay safe on the street. Children’s Hospital will be offering their Safety Street Interactive Zone, a walk-through exhibit that teaches kids how to navigate through various scenarios, such as looking out for cars or how to handle being approached by a stranger or a barking dog.

There will be plenty of opportunities for parents to learn too. “This year, one new thing that we’re doing is offering CPR classes for parents,” said Deatz. “Anybody 12 or older can take it, and it takes about 20-30 minutes. There’s no registration and no fee. It’s a great way to learn CPR should the need for it ever arise. We will also have MoChip there; they will have a station where they put your child’s vital information on a CD, should the unthinkable happen. It will include fingerprints, eye color, dental impressions – all that kind of stuff all in one place. It’s free, and a good thing for every parent to have… and hopefully never use!” The expo’s presenting sponsors, Barnes Jewish St. Peters Hospital and Children’s at Progress West, will also be offering fun activities and information at their booth. “We will have some pediatric nurses to talk about helmet safety and car seat safety, as well as helmet fittings and helmet and car seat giveaways,” explained Cara Lotspeich, Coordinator for the Barnes Jewish St. Peters Hospital and Children’s at Progress West Hospital

booth. “We’re also going to have our Fit ‘n’ Fun Wheel, which kids will spin and do some sort of fitness activity to stress the importance of being active. Our mascot, Snerdlihc, will be there as well.” The Baby Kid Expo has even more fun to look forward to, including a reptile See A YOUTHFUL EXTRAVAGANZA page 2
