Valley of Flowers Festival offers something for everyone For 53 years, since 1963, the Valley of Flowers Festival celebration has been the “first festival of spring.” It features a variety of events, including a superb parade.

This three-day weekend festival has activities for everyone from a flower and plant sale to culturally-diverse musical performances. There are baseball games, craft and flea market sales, children’s activities, a classic car show and of course good food. Carnival games and exciting rides are featured at the Duchesne Knights of Columbus Fairgrounds.

The official parade on Sunday, May 3 is a highlight of the weekend that leads up to the crowning of the Valley of Flowers Queen and her Court at the Duchesne Knights of Columbus Pavilion.

The festival is organized by the Valley of Flowers Committee: Chairman, Pat Stinnett; Coordinator, Kati Mahoney; Board Members; Jerry Ahlert, Kathy Blasingame, Vicky Egan, Mary Gettemeier, Mike Kubiak, Pamela Lee and Michael O’Fallon. The committee works in partnership with the city of Florissant.

At the Duchesne Knights of Columbus Fairgrounds: There will be many activities all weekend at the Duchesne Knights of Columbus grounds on Washington Street between St. Ferdinand and Lindbergh Blvd. (N. Hwy 67) next to St. Ferdinand Shrine. During the entire three-day festival, the grounds are reserved for families. Anyone under 18 years old must be accompanied by an

adult. On Friday night only, all rides are one ticket. Enjoy the rides, games, great food and famous barbeque. There are many rides available for younger children, as well as the grand Ferris wheel for everyone. On Friday, Saturday and Sunday visit the beer and wine garden. The Knights will serve their delicious barbecue ribs, pork steaks, brats, hot dogs and hamburgers Friday through Sunday.

Booths, sponsored by local not-for-profit organizations, will offer a variety of festival foods and games. The beer garden will be open Friday through Sunday.

On Sunday watch the parade. Immediately afterwards, the Valley of Flowers Queen and her court will be crowned at the Knights of Columbus pavilion.

Awards will be presented to the winners of the Valley of Flowers parade and Pretty Baby photo contest. After the crowning of the queen and her court at the large pavilion, the Knights invite everyone to their charity raffle with fabulous items.

All proceeds from the raffle go to help those in need in the Florissant area.

The Knights of Columbus grounds are open on Friday from 4 - 10 p.m., on Saturday from 11 a.m. - 10 p.m., and on Sunday from 11 a.m. - 8 p.m. Please do not park on the local shopping center lots, Dierbergs and Florissant Meadows.

There is ample parking in the field on St. Charles Street or at St. Ferdinand Park and walk over the path to the festival.

To maintain a family-friendly and

neighborhood atmosphere, the festival committee has implemented changes to better manage the crowds and traffic flow in and around the festival grounds. The plan includes temporary traffic regulations to prevent festival traffic from interfering with local businesses including the no parking policy at Florissant Meadows Shopping Center and Dierbergs, a wellenforced dress code, and increased overall security. Additionally, no one will be allowed to enter the Knights Grounds after 9 p.m. on any evening.

53rd Valley of Flowers Parade: Since 1963, the Valley of Flowers parade has been on the first Sunday afternoon in May. This year’s parade features more than 120 units. It will begin with the vehicle units and floats departing from the James J. Eagan Center at 1:45 p.m. and proceeding up Parker Road to Florissant Road where the parade turns left. At that point the vehicles and floats will be joined by youth and other special units, as well as the marching bands, which will be waiting in the Atonement Lutheran Church parking lot. From there the parade will proceed along Florissant Road turning right on rue St. Francois and past the official parade stands then left on St. Ferdinand Street. Proceeding to Washington Street the parade will turn right and end at the Knights of Columbus fairgrounds.

City of Ferguson announces rescheduled StreetFest and Farmers Market summer season The 2014 StreetFest, which was postponed in September 2014, will take place on May 9 from 8 a.m. - 11 p.m. The city of Ferguson, will also kickoff on that date, the annual summer season opener of the Ferguson Farmers Market.

The Ferguson Farmers Market will celebrate its 13th delicious season. Patrons will enjoy a festive family atmosphere; discover a wide variety of edible delights, and an array of specialty vendors.

There will be a morning workout class, bar relay races, karaoke, activities for children, and bands performing throughout the day.

The Soulard Blues Band will headline the event.

“This is an annual tradition that many of our residents are looking forward too,” said Mayor James Knowles III. “Our Streetfest is still scheduled to take place in September,” Knowles added.

This year’s event is seeking sponsorship and volunteers. For more information please visit FergusonStreetFest.com.

Northwinds Concert Band prepares concert Northwinds Concert Band, under the direction of Larry Marsh, will present a “Saturday Pops” concert at 7:30 p.m. on May 2 in the Florissant Civic Center Theatre. Tickets are $8 for adults, $6 for seniors and students and may be reserved by calling the box office at 314-921-5678.

Maestro Marsh says, “This will be a great way to help celebrate “Valley of Flowers” weekend indoors in the lovely Civic Center Theatre with our great hometown concert band. We’re happy to honor our long-time band members, including Linton Luetje who founded the ensemble in 1970! Linton’s still in Northwinds, playing the tuba every week with his usual gusto!”

Northwinds will be joined by the fine 40-voice Bel Canto Chorus under the direction of Bruce Vantine. The chorus will perform a work originally composed by Vantine for Florissant’s Bicentennial. They will join the band for a medley of Andrew Lloyd Webber hits and for a powerful arrangement of “God of Our Fathers”

Marsh notes, “We are also especially happy to bring back one of the best vocalists in town, Patricia Scanlon, to sing a great medley of Gershwin love songs plus “Let it Go” from Frozen.”

During the evening, Northwinds will cover all the musical bases with an exciting arrangement of mambos, tunes from the James Bond films, a rock classic from Pink Floyd, a rollicking circus march, a new jazzy work by Northwinds’ own Rick Slonim, tunes from Gilbert and Sullivan and more.

The sixth annual Ferguson Twilight Run is Saturday, May 16 in downtown Ferguson, and it’s the only evening race in North St. Louis County. Pre-race festivities start at 4:30 p.m. The one-mile run is at 5:00 p.m., the 5K starts at 5:45 p.m. and the 10K begins at 6:15 p.m.

“The Ferguson Twilight Run has become a cornerstone of fun activities for families in Ferguson and around the St. Louis region.

The run provides an opportunity for participants, volunteers, businesses and the entire community to come together to support all facets of diversity, while also benefitting local healthy and active programs,” said Dwayne T. James, Ferguson council member and Ferguson Twilight Run race director.

“The Ferguson Twilight Run is a prime example of true community collaboration at its best. I am proud of the work that we do to host this event in Ferguson each year.”

Matt Helbig, CEO/founder of Big River Running Company said “The Ferguson Twilight Run really brings the community together to support health, fitness and getting Ferguson moving! We are excited to be part of it for another great year.”

There’s more to the race than running and walking. Before the race begins, live music entertainment greets participants as they head toward the start line at Plaza at 501. A drum circle will take the lead for pre-race festivities. A free concert with the Dirty Muggs continues into the evening.

The Ferguson Twilight Run donates proceeds to community organizations that represent healthy, sustainable aspects of fitness activities. The 2015 beneficiaries are Emerson Family YMCA, Girls on the Run at Bermuda Elementary, Ferguson Youth Initiative’s Earn-a-Bike Program, Marygrove, St. Vincent Home for Children and Friends of Ferguson Disc Golf. Each agency will receive a percentage of the proceeds from the race.

Race fees for the 5K and 10K events are $25; on May 16, the fee increases to $30. The One-Mile Fun Run is $10. Teams of 10 or more get $2 off each person’s entry fee. Registration includes a performance shirt and a medal for 5K and 10K race finishers. Onemile registration includes a cotton shirt. Participation is capped at 2,500. A Valuable Inheritance?

ast week, the title of my article was “Are You Trust-worthy”.

In that article, I addressed many potential issues when leaving money to your heirs. This money could suddenly become subject to bankruptcy, creditors, divorce, excessive taxation or just plain old

reckless spending. That article hit home with many people as I have received several follow up comments and questions since then. Obviously, many people want to protect their legacy… so, will you leave a ‘valuable inheritance’?

Most people will inherit money.

While this is nice, it’s not as simple as many think. The ultimate value of an inheritance often depends on how it was structured plus many more factors which must be addressed. #1) You must consider the type of account that will be inherited as different types have varying rules and guidelines. #2) You must consider the taxability of each type as some inheritances are tax free, some are partially taxable and some are completely taxable. #3) You need to make sure that accounts with beneficiary designations are properly set up, as defined beneficiaries override wills and trusts.

There are many other factors and deadlines to consider in order to preserve certain options and tax benefits.

Pattonville graduate assisted U.S. soccer video team for recent Busch game Austin Ratanasitee, a 2014 Pattonville High School graduate, had a close-up view of the recent U.S. women’s soccer victory over New Zealand’s national team at Busch Stadium. Ratanasitee was chosen to be a volunteer member of the U.S. soccer video team.

He helped film behind the scenes as the women’s team defeated New Zealand 4-0 in a friendly match on April 4 before an audience of more than 35,000 spectators. His credentials gave him access to the locker room, press conference and field. Ratanasitee is already making a name for himself with his video work. He was recently honored with an Outstanding Student Employee Award for his video work with the athletics department at Webster University, where he is pursuing his degree.

Pattonville Youth Garden receives donations from Webster Groves Herb Society A new organization has joined the list of community groups and companies that are supporting the development of the new Pattonville Youth Garden at the Pattonville Learning Center. The space will be used for a variety of purposes, including as an outdoor classroom and to potentially provide food for family and consumer science classes and the district food service program.

The Webster Groves Herb Society recently approved funding to provide drip tape and connectors for the garden’s irrigation system. In addition, the society also agreed to provide free herbs, vegetables and other plants left from its annual Herb Sale on April 25 at the First Congregational Church in Webster Groves.

The sale serves as a fund-raiser for the society and helps support projects like Pattonville’s youth garden.

Pattonville has previously received support from Gateway Greening, Home Depot and Chartwells, which manages Pattonville’s food services program. Pattonville is one of eight schools nationwide - and the only one in Missouri - that was chosen for a school garden partnership with Chartwells and the National Gardening Association. The partnership creates a new way of engaging students in education through nutrition and sustainability awareness, hands-on knowledge of where food comes from and the opportunity to enjoy fresh, healthy produce that children grow themselves.

The 4,096-square foot Pattonville Youth Garden was the idea of Simon Amies, Pattonville’s web and database administrator.

Amies and other district volunteers outlined, tilled and prepped the soil at the site in October, and seedlings for a variety of fruits and vegetables are growing inside the Learning Center to prepare for future plantings in the garden. In the spring and summer, students, staff and community volunteers will be able to help plant and harvest fruits, vegetables, herbs and flowers.

The Nayme Gaime Listen. Did you hear that loud rumbling? That was Webster rolling over in his grave. Why, you ask? Because our spelling is being shredded. Especially with names.

There’s a trend which started in the last whoknows-when where the conventional spelling of names has become unacceptable. Today, everyone has to have a unique twist on the standard way. No one wants to be the same?

Gone are the simple days of Brian, Donna and Judy. They have now transformed into: BryAnne, Dauwna and Joodiee. Parents feel they must have funky spellings by adding extra consonants, unneeded vowels, silent letters and added symbols until it becomes a phonetic nightmare. Example: Friend: “What are you going to name your baby?”

Mother-to-be: “Jane” Friend: “Cute and classic.”

MTB: “Not in the least. We’re spelling it Wayxne!

It will begin with a W to honor my grandfather’s name, Wayne. Of course, that wouldn’t be proper to call a girl Wayne, so the W will be pronounced like a J. The X is silent allowing her to stand apart from all the other plain Janes. Plus we’ve added an exclamation point at the end to ensure she will become a vivacious leader.”

Derf alert! It will never be spelled or pronounced right and everyone is going to call her Waxney? And all she will ever lead is people into a life of bitter frustration.

Too vanilla; needs some nuts and sprinkles and a big ol’ dollop of what-the-smoking-doodles-wereyou-thinking, to become: Airwrecka. Not kidding. Sounds like a plane crash. Pity the lifetime this kid has to respell and pronounce the mispronunciation of her train wreck of a name.

So parents, stick to the basics. Spelling is important.

Basketball team needs to fill coaching vacancy The Lindenwood Lions have to replace their coach because of his decision to accept the assistant coach’s position at the University of Virginia.

Lindenwood men’s basketball head coach Brad Soderberg announced his resignation on Friday afternoon to become an assistant coach at the University of Virginia.

His tenure made him the all-time winning head coach with 127 wins that also gave him the school record in winning percentage with a .690 mark.

“We would like to thank Brad for his time at Lindenwood,” said Athletic Director John Creer. “He came to the university in a time of transition and helped the program gain some recognition on a local and national level. We also want to wish him luck in his future. With that being said we believe that head basketball

Baja Fish Tacos with Watermelon Guacamole Servings: 12–16 tacos Ingredients: 2 medium avocados, peeled and chopped 2 tablespoons lime juice 2 teaspoons diced jalapeno pepper (or to taste) 1/3 cup chopped cilantro 2 medium garlic cloves, minced 1 can (4 ounces) diced green chilies, drained 2 1/2 cups diced watermelon, divided Salt, to taste Cooking spray 1 1/2 pounds cod Chili powder 12–16 corn tortillas 3–4 cups commercial coleslaw mix (shredded cabbage and carrots) 1/2–1 cup commercial salsa Directions: For guacamole, mash avocados to mix of smooth and chunky in medium bowl.

Add lime, jalapeno, cilantro, garlic and chilies and mix thoroughly. Add 1 1/2 cups diced watermelon and salt (if desired) and toss. Cover and refrigerate to let flavors blend.

Heat oven to 350°F. Spray cookie sheet with cooking spray.

Place cod on sheet and sprinkle with chili powder and salt. Bake for 12–20

minutes (depending on thickness of fish) or until cooked through. Remove from oven and cut into pieces.

Heat tortillas on grill or griddle. Top each with few pieces of fish, 1/4 cup coleslaw mix, heaping spoonful of guacamole, tablespoon of salsa and few pieces of remaining diced watermelon.

Watermelon Cilantro Salsa Tropical Servings: 8–12 Ingredients: 2 cups chopped seedless watermelon 1 cup chopped fresh pineapple 1 cup chopped fresh mango 4 limes (juice only) 1 cup trimmed and chopped scallions

1/2 cup chopped fresh cilantro Salt and pepper, to taste Directions: Toss all ingredients in mixing bowl and season with salt and pepper just before serving.

Southwest Salsa Bowl Watermelon Margarita Servings: 1

Materials: 1 round, seedless watermelon Dry erase marker Utility knife or carving knife Ice cream scoop or other large spoon Fire and Ice Salsa Chips, jalapenos, cilantro and lime, for garnish 1. Choose round seedless watermelon.

2. Wash watermelon and pat dry.

3. Use dry erase marker to trace design

around middle of watermelon.

4. Use utility knife to carve design (copy design in photo).

5. Split watermelon in half, and use scoop to carve out flesh.

6. Choose flat area of rind on other watermelon half to trace and carve out lizard design (copy from image in photo).

7. Fill bowl with salsa.

8. Garnish with lizard, chips, jalapenos, cilantro and lime.

Fire and Ice Salsa Servings: 3 cups

Ingredients: 1 1/2 ounces tequila 3/4 ounce Triple Sec 3/4 ounce Midori 2 ounces sour mix 6 ounces cubed, seeded watermelon 8 ounces ice Directions: Blend all ingredients. Serve in 14-ounce glass. Garnish with lime and watermelon wedge.

Ingredients: 3 cups seeded and chopped watermelon 1/2 cup green peppers 2 tablespoons lime juice 1 tablespoon chopped cilantro 1 tablespoon green onion

1–2 tablespoons jalapeno peppers Directions: TCombine ingredients; mix well and cover.

Refrigerate 1 hour or more.

“St. Louis West” - a compromise My father got a speeding ticket for 45 in a 40 on Lindbergh back in the sixties early on a Sunday morning on his way to repair a piece of equipment the company needed on Monday. There was barely any traffic at 6 a.m. except a local traffic cop hiding behind a billboard.

It was the only traffic ticket my father ever received.

Back then, motorists had to go to court so there was no pleading guilty to a city clerk and paying the fine out of court. The courtroom was standing-room-only with people lined up all the way out into the hall waiting to pay traffic fines. Dad waited for over three hours before it was his turn, but while he was waiting a man pleaded not guilty to a speeding offense.

The judge rapped his gavel and roared, “I’m holding you in contempt of court! Officer, arrest that man!”

By now, we’ve all read or heard about the Missouri Legislature’s bill to decrease municipal courts’ traffic fines from 30 percent to 10 percent of city revenue. I assume the Department of Justice investigation of Ferguson’s court probably instigated this long overdue action and apparently it wasn’t the only municipality guilty of exorbitant traffic fines by a long shot.

Anybody who has ever driven everyday in the tri-county area has at one time or another been pulled over or observed other motorists being pulled over by small mu-

nicipal police departments to receive speeding tickets. Back in the early sixties, places like Bel-Ridge, Cool Valley, Calverton Park, Charlack and others were notorious for jumping motorists at every opportunity to write traffic citations ending in fines collected by what some called kangaroo courts.

The point is: this preying on motorists for revenue by municipalities has been going on for many years. It didn’t just start recently but it has increased to the point of becoming a public outrage that finally reached the semi-impaired ears of the Missouri Legislature.

It appears to be moving along to become a law against the exorbitant fines collected by municipal courts that primarily kept the decadesold system financed.

Perhaps the reason it increased in recent years was because the tax dollars decreased during the recession and it made traffic fines much more essential for small government financial support.

Some believe many of those local governments aren’t necessary at all and want St. Louis County to merge with the city of St. Louis and eliminate them. It would probably save the taxpayers many millions they’re paying for small municipal governments which aren’t exactly cheap considering rent, light, heat, buildings, salaries, insurance, equipment and so on; not to mention courtrooms and perhaps armored car service to carry the loot.

There are many pros and cons on this but I assume it would be fought against primarily by the municipal politicians who face unemployment and their loyal constituents which some believe are in short supply.

There is a compromise here that isn’t being considered. Many county residents don’t want to merge with the city for one reason or another. Why not eliminate all those small municipal governments and name the county, “St. Louis West” with a centralized government, districts to replace larger municipalities and combinations of smaller ones and one police department with sub stations in each district? It would probably save the taxpayers many millions and eliminate expensive governments entrenched with officials elected by 20 or 30 percent of the voters.
