with Dr Zhivegas The fourth annual Ferguson Twilight Run/Walk is Saturday, May 18. The race includes one-mile, 5K and 10K distances. The race is formerly known as LiveWell Ferguson Twilight 5K Run/ Walk. Race times are set for 5 pm for the one-mile distance and 6 pm for the 5K and 10K distances.

The high-energy, rock, pop, and dance band Dr Zhivegas is the post-race entertainment at this year’s Ferguson Twilight Run. A Dr Zhivegas show is a multi-media-influenced, nonstop dance party event. Using the latest technology incorporating video back drops, lighting and pyro effects, Dr Zhivegas keeps the audience dancing as the live sets segue seamlessly into the VJ breaks and back to the live show. They are truly one of the best live acts I’ve ever seen,” says Judy Alberti, Vice President of entertainment for Station Casinos. “The band plays with such intensity and high-energy that their shows are like one big party.”

Dr Zhivegas will perform from 6:30 p.m. to 8:30 p.m. at Plaza at 501, located at the intersection of Florissant Road and Suburban Avenue. The post-race entertainment is free to all race participants, their families, and the community. The concert is sponsored as part of the Ferguson Citywalk Concert Series.

Post-race festivities include free beer and root beer tastings, vendors, specials at local restaurants and more. Ferguson Twilight Run is the only evening race in North St. Louis County.

Ferguson Twilight Run is a familyfriendly race for participants of all fitness levels. Baby joggers/strollers are welcome, but pets are not allowed. Online registration is open for runners and walkers. Race fees are $20 for the 5K and 10K. The race fee for the One-Mile Fun Run is $10. Special rates are offered to teams of 10 or more. Entry fees increase in April. Awards and prizes are presented to top finishers. The course is USATF certified and timed by Big River Running. Recycling bins are provided for cups, bottles and other beverage containers.

Participants are encouraged to carpool, walk, jog or bike to the event, if possible, as on-site parking is limited. Valet bike parking will be available courtesy of Ferguson Bicycle Shop.

Since 2010, proceeds from Ferguson Twilight Run have benefited youth scholarships to attend camp programs at

the Emerson Family YMCA. The 2012 race raised $10,000 for local youth.

The Nation’s Largest One-Day Food Drive On Saturday, May 11 you can join in the 21st Annual Letter Carriers’ Stamp Out Hunger National Food Drive. Simply place unopened, nonperishable food next to your mailbox before your letter carrier delivers your mail on May 11.

Peanut butter, soups, canned tuna or chicken are favorites. Any non-perishable canned good that can be considered a complete meal is desired.

In 2012, the local letter carriers collected more

than 724,647 pounds of food in one day. That equates to more than 591,500 meals. According to St. Louis Area Foodbank, one in eight people in the bi-state region are in need of food assistance. Each week, an estimated 57,100 people rely upon the Foodbank for food assistance. According to Feeding America, children make up the largest segment of the population in need of food assistance

The City of Florissant and the Saint Louis Zoo held a media event today to celebrate the work young people in St. Louis, Tucson, Arizona and Nairobi, Kenya have been doing to save pollinators. They have been learning about the importance and plight of pollinators and their contribution to our food supply. They are participants in a $200,000 project called P.A.U.S.E. – Pollinators/ Art/Urban Agriculture/Society and the Environment.

Center for Native Pollinator Conservation unveiled the plans for a 3.5-acre urban garden at the Florissant site, located in the shadow of the historic St. Ferdinand Shrine.

Mayor Schneider shared, “The word Florissant means growing well—flourishing.” In our beautiful city we know how important it is to develop urban gardens and having the garden on this site is especially valuable because it is close to three schools and public transit. In Florissant we are very proud of our rich history. This garden allows us to connect the cultivation by Native Americans and the French settlers who gave the name Fleurissant to our valley in the mid 1700’s.

Mayor Schneider offered a special thanks to Gateway Greening, Florissant Community Garden Club, the American Alliance of Museums, the Saint Louis Zoo and their students for all of their efforts to help create a beautiful urban garden that will be enjoyed for years to come. 120 Attend North County Christian School Dinner

North County Christian School hosted its Continue the Legacy fundraising dinner on Saturday, April 20. Guests enjoyed dinner provided by Catering to You, and served by NCCS students.

During the dinner, guests were entertained with musical performances by NCCS’ string and choral ensembles, and inspired by words from keynote speaker, Harold Hendrick. Attendees included NCCS parents, alumni, staff and current board members, as well as community business and civic leaders, including Florissant Mayor, Tom Schneider.

Get Outta Town: Show-Me Missouri State Chili Cookoff The Raintree Arts Council is proud sponsor of the Show-Me Missouri State Chili Cookoff.

This event is an International Chili Society sanctioned event. There is only one state competition in Missouri, and it will be in Clarksville on June 1 in the Clarksville Riverfront Park.

Entertainment will be by the “Everyday People Band,” providing great music and dancing.

Cold beverages will be served and Chili will be hot at 11am on the 1st of June. Admission will be $3.00 and tickets sold for chili sampling and beverages will be $.50 each.

There are more than 200 cook-offs during the year sanctioned by the ICS. Raintree Arts Council is a 501c3 non-profit that provides

programs in the schools plus education for the arts in Pike and Lincoln Counties.

Food Search Aids Operation Backpack Operation Food Search (OFS), a local leader in hunger relief, has been selected to receive a $15,000 grant as part of the Restaurant Community Grants program from the Darden Foundation, the charitable arm of Darden Restaurants Inc. The grant program, now in its second year, empowers each restaurant in the Darden family of brands to help award a $1,000 grant to support local community programs. The donation will help Operation Food Search to provide a vital bridge of nutrition to children living in poverty through its weekend feeding program, Operation Backpack.

Darden’s Red Lobster and Olive Garden brands participated in the program. Many restaurants and brands worked together to award one nonprofit organization with a larger grant and make a greater impact in their community. The restaurants will award more than $1.9 million to more

than 850 exceptional non-profit organizations in the United States and Canada. Non-profits receiving grants support one of Darden’s three key focus areas: access to post-secondary education, preservation of natural resources and hunger.

Operation Food Search’s child-focused nutrition program, Operation Backpack, feeds hungry children by providing backpacks full of food for the weekend to children at 36 sites, including schools in St. Louis City, St. Louis County and St. Charles County and Head Start locations. Backpacks include nutritious, kid-friendly, easy-toprepare breakfast, lunch and dinner items plus healthy snacks and “easy to digest” nutrition information. Launched in 2008, Operation Backpack currently serves 4,000 children.

McKelvey Woods Trail Open House Residents will have an opportunity to learn about and comment on the second phase of the McKelvey Woods Trail project at an open house at the Maryland Heights Centre from 4 - 7pm on May 15.

Conceptual designs and maps will be on display for public review, and representatives of the city, Great Rivers Greenway and project consultant Burns & McDonnell will be available to answer questions.

The proposed trail will connect to Phase I of the McKelvey Woods Trail, which is currently under construction, and end at the Creve Coeur Lake parking lot along Marine Avenue. The 10-foot wide bike and pedestrian trail will be primarily asphalt and concrete, with three bridges and a short elevated boardwalk through wetland areas. Phase II of the trail is expected to open in the fall of 2014.

Hispanic Art Show The first FHC Art Show displaying the work of Hispanic Artists will be held at Hendel’s Market Cafe in Old Town Florissant on Sunday, May 19 from 2pm - 4pm.

On that date, the Florissant Hispanic Committee will spend an afternoon showcasing the artistic work of talented aspiring Hispanics using various art mediums such as canvas, photography, sketching and craft items. Ferguson Farmers Market Open The award-winning Ferguson Farmers Market is open for its 11th season. Market hours are Saturdays, 8am - 12pm. The market is located in downtown Ferguson’s Victorian Plaza, at 20 S. Florissant Road in Citywalk.

Credit Union Donates To Hazelwood Storm Victims Neighbors Credit Union’s branches in the Hazelwood/Florissant area were not affected by the recent storms. However, many of their neighbors were. When Hazelwood School District recently published a list of needed items for the recent storm victims, Neighbors Credit Union was proud to help by donating items and holding fundraisers.

April Storm Summary for Florissant Mayor Thomas P. Schneider held a debriefing at police headquarters with Chief Timothy J. Lowery and other key personnel that were involved directly with the storm that hit Florissant/ Hazelwood on April 10.

City Engineer Tim Barrett reported that there were approximately 259 residential/commercial business structures that received damage. Of that number 23 had heavy damage, 37 had moderate damage and 199 had very light damage. At least 150 other properties in the City had some tree damage.

City’s Street and Park Maintenance Department along with Meridian Waste Service is continuing storm recovery efforts in the areas that were hit the hardest. Homeowners are encouraged to avoid being a victim a second time by hiring reliable local contractors for tree removal, auto and home repair. The police and other officials will be monitoring housing repair contractors who are offering services to homeowners.

The Mayor wanted to thank Pastor Joe Costephens and Administrative Pastor Mark Cote from Passage Church and Andrea Cekovsky, leader of Military Veteran Team Rubicon, Russell Sage with Sage Tree Service, Chuck Barcom with Meridian Waste and Bruce Bailey with AmeriCorps for bringing volunteers into the City to assist residents in the clean up efforts. These organizations went above and beyond with volunteering their time to help seniors and others who were overwhelmed.

Mayor Schneider would like to encourage residents to sign up for the new NIXLE program the City announced in March.

This program allows the City to send important valuable community information directly to residents using the latest technology. Subscribers can instantly receive information via cell phone text message and/or email allowing the City to communicate with the residents during emergency situations.

Mayor Thomas P. Schneider is pleased to announce that on April 29 Shakespeare Festival St. Louis SHAKE38 performed in the Council Chambers. The performance was 7th of 38 performances.

Shakespeare Festival St. Louis has grown tremendously since that first year in 2001 when Romeo & Juliet played under the stars for 33,000 people. Thirteen years later, the grassroots effort has grown into a St .Louis institution serving over 100,000 people annually through their programming in the Schools, In the Streets, and in the Park. Shakespeare Festival St. Louis is located in Shakespeare Glen, Forrest Park, Northeast of The St. Louis Art Museum.

May 11: Kids Walking for Kids Most parents have gotten the message to talk to their teens about sex, tobacco, alcohol and other drugs, and safety issues. However, there is an important topic that many of our teens need to talk to us about that many of us are omitting. We lose more 15-24 year olds to this than the top six leading medical causes of death combined.

What is it? Adolescent depression and suicide. Did you know that 1 in 16 high school students report having made a suicide attempt in the last year? Do you know the signs and symptoms? Do you know what to do if your child comes to you? Does your child know what to do if their suicidal friend comes to them?

It is time for the issue of depression and suicide to come out of the closet. Our teens need to feel comfortable asking for help. Our teens with depression need to get the help they need and feel supported and cared for at home and at school. Make an effort today to talk to your kids and their friends about this issue and learn about the warning signs.

CHADS Coalition (Communities Healing Adolescent Depression and Suicide)—a local, nationally recognized non-profit agency—is raising awareness on this topic through an activity for everyone called Kids Walking for Kids: on May 11, from 4 – 9pm at Creve Coeur Park’s Sailboat Cove. Filled with fun and hope, the event is a wonderful opportunity to have the needed conversation about mental health with your children. Enjoy Joe Dirt and the Dirty Boys Band, the inflatable obstacle course, 3-in-1 sports center, and giant slide. Compete in the potato sack races, pony hops, pig races, and relays. Enjoy all the games, art activities, and huge fireworks display.

While you are there, read the powerful stories of hope, talk to local mental health agencies, make a luminary for a memorial walk along the lake, and make sure your children know they can come to you if they or one of their friends feel depressed. All money raised goes to support CHADS’ mission to save young lives by advancing the awareness and prevention of depression and suicide.

Permanent Household Hazardous Waste Program The Saint Louis County Department of Health is pleased to announce that the first permanent household hazardous waste collection facility is now open. The permanent program is regional and residents from St. Louis County, St. Louis City, and Jefferson County are eligible to participate by making a reservation and for more information visit www.hhwstl.com.

The site is located at 291 E. Hoffmeister (on the grounds of the Metropolitan St. Louis Sewer District’s Lemay Waste Water Treatment Plant).

Please advise residents to follow the reservation instructions and to print off the voucher that confirms the reservation. Residents should bring the voucher and proof of address to the appointment. Proof of address can be a utility bill or driver’s license. Residents without internet access can call their jurisdiction for assistance in making a reservation: • Saint Louis County: 314.615.8958

Latex paint is being accepted for recycling, but residents will be required to pay the full cost. That fee is 20 cents per pound ($2.00 for a full gallon). Unlike other household chemical waste, latex paint can be disposed of with other non- recyclable trash if completely dried out. Consult your local hardware store to inquire about latex paint drying agents.

Funding for the permanent program comes in part from the St. Louis Jefferson Solid Waste Management District and the Missouri Department of Natural Resources. New Stores by Hudson Group Open at Lambert The transformation of the retail scene is getting a big boost this week at Lambert-St. Louis International Airport. The Hudson Group is opening its first phase of newly constructed stores since it became Lambert’s master news, gifts and specialty retail concessionaire on February 1.

The first wave of openings includes five stores that have just opened at Lambert. The first flagship Hudson travel convenience store (news, magazines, books, snacks, technology) is located in Terminal 1 on the C Concourse near gate C18. The new Bliss store featuring lotions and spa products is also located in the C Concourse near gate C15.

In Terminal 2, the new Discover St. Louis store is open near gate E18. The boutique features souvenirs and mementos from all the leading cultural institutions in the city, including all the attractions at the Jefferson National Parks (including The Gateway Arch), Peabody Opera, St. Louis Art Museum, as well as entertainment attractions like the St. Louis Zoo, St. Louis Blues, and Wash-

ington University of St. Louis. Also in Terminal 2, a new Spectacles, featuring the latest eyewear from across the globe, is open near gate E12. Kids Works, featuring educational and travel toys and games, is open near gate E22.

A sixth store, another Spectacles in the C Concourse, will open next week to round out the first phase of Hudson’s store openings at Lambert.

Hudson Group has been operating out of existing retail locations or temporary kiosks to serve customers through this initial phase of store construction.

Hudson and its business partners will operate 14 retail locations once it completes its build-out of stores. Additional news & gift and specialty stores will open in phases as construction continues through early summer. New Principal for Hazelwood Northwest Middle The Hazelwood School District Board of Education approved a recommendation to select Dr. Katherine Chambers as the principal of Hazelwood Northwest Middle School. Dr. Willicia Hobbs, the current principal, has been promoted to assistant superintendent.

Chambers has more than 10 years of educational experience. She has spent the past two-and-ahalf years as a middle school assistant principal, serving at both Hazelwood East Middle School and Hazelwood Southeast Middle School. She previously taught middle school social studies at Cross Keys Middle School in the FergusonFlorissant School District. She also served three years as social studies department chairperson.

as a school and community resource volunteer in the United States Peace Corps. She spent two years in Cassel Village, South Africa, where she conducted monthly workshops for teachers, evaluated and monitored the development of staff from three schools, and initiated and assisted in the organization of an event to celebrate World AIDS Day. She has a bachelor’s degree in secondary education from Arizona State University, and a master’s degree in educational administration from Saint Louis University. She received her doctorate in educational administration from Lindenwood University.

She will officially begin in her new role July 1.

Staff at Russell Elementary Helps Tornado Victims Russell Elementary School sits a few blocks from the hardest hit areas by the tornado in Hazelwood. When the teachers and staff realized many of the Russell Elementary families were affected by the tornado, they jumped into action. Nearly 15 Russell Elementary families were directly affected by the tornado, and approximately 10 families are now homeless.

“We were all watching what was happening on the news, and the emails started flying,” said Perano. “We knew we had to help, and agreed to meet here at the school Thursday to see what we could do.”

On Thursday, Friday and Saturday after the tornado, Russell Elementary staff helped canvass the affected neighborhoods, clean-up storm debris and contacted Russell Elementary families to offer support.

After visiting the shelter set up Russell staff helping to remove a tree on Town House by the Red Cross, one teacher, Karren Semones, recognized a family and offered her home to them. The family does not have other family in the area. Semones and her husband took the family in for a few days, and also helped them find a new home and furnish the new home.

Paula Daniels, building aide, wanted to do more to help the families; she set up the Russell Store for the affected families to receive items they need.

“We had been working on Paula Daniels sorting items Thursday and Friday of last is dismantled, the items left will be donated to week. What I saw was very upsetting and I kept thinking there had to be some- CRT. Perano said it has been important for the famithing else we could do. Local Teen Named Missouri Youth Of The Year Amanda Richardson, a three-year member of Boys & Girls Club of Greater St. Louis, has been named the Youth of the Year for the state of Missouri by Boys & Girls Clubs of America (BGCA). In addition to winning this prestigious title, Amanda will receive a $2,000 scholarship from Tupperware, BGCA National Youth of the Year sponsor, and the Missouri Alliance of Boys & Girls Clubs. Amanda competed against eight other youth across the state and is among hundreds of Youth of the Year winners across the country recognized by Boys & Girls Clubs of America (BGCA) for her sound character, leadership skills and willingness to give back to the community.

Being named Youth of the Year is the highest honor a Boys & Girls Club member can receive. The title recognizes outstanding contributions to a member’s family, school, community and Boys & Girls Club, as well as personal challenges and obstacles overcome. This program was founded over 60 years ago through the generosity of the Reader’s Digest Foundation.

Amanda is a senior at Beaumont Career and Technical Educational High School where her first semester grades put her on Platinum Honor Roll with a GPA of 3.6. She is currently interning at Lester’s, a popular St. Louis restaurant and in the fall of 2013 she will attend Dillard University in Louisiana, where she will study and earn a dual degree in Social Work and Culinary Art. At the Club, Amanda serves as treasurer of the Keystone Club and has participated in SMART Girls activities since joining the Club because she felt it was a wonderful opportunity for her to share her story with her peers and give them healthy advice.

Amanda wants her peers in SMART Girls to be positive leaders and role models for younger female members of the organization.

“The Herbert Hoover Club is a place I call home” explains Amanda. “It is a place to get away from all the harmful things that surround me in my community. Any day I’m not at the Club I know that I can potentially face gun violence, drug deals, robberies, and even death.” Consequently, Amanda considers the Club her home away from home.

When asked to describe how the Youth of the Year program has helped her Amanda said, “This process has been just like what I believe the Boys & Girls Club wants to do for us. I’ve been encouraged by staff and even my peers. Sometimes, others fear you for your beliefs and opinions, skin color or nationality. At the beginning of World War II, after the Japanese bombed Pearl Harbor in 1941, there was concern that Japanese-Americans weren’t to be trusted — the United States government and its citizens believed they might be spies.

Barbed Wire Baseball, by Marissa Moss, is the inspiring story of Zeni, a Japanese American man, an accomplished baseball player who wouldn’t let his dreams blow away in the dust.

As a boy Zeni was known as “a teeny tiny one,” way too small to ever be good at the sport he loved. Zeni knocked that puny prediction out of the park. Though he only grew to be 5 feet tall, and weighed a mere 100 pounds, Zeni played with the New York Yankees. His future looked bright, but then the war broke out and he and 120,000 other Japanese-Americans were forced to live in internment camps surrounded by barbed-wire fences.

Though others distrusted Zeni and others like him, the small man didn’t let his fear of never playing baseball again materialize. Zeni used all of his resources to score big. Illustrator Yuko Shimizu brings Zeni’s amazing story to life.

Scholarship Application Tips The high cost of a college education means that a lot of students are looking for financial aid to help pay for it. But the competition can be stiff. According to the most recent National Postsecondary Student Aid Study, only 5.5 percent1 of undergraduate students received non-athletic scholarships.

What can students do to give themselves the best chance of receiving some much-needed scholarship money?

“Start your search and application process as early as possible,” says Tiffany Turner, Program Manager at International Scholarship and Tuition Services, Inc., who manages 30 scholarship programs including Foresters™ Competitive Scholarship Program2. “Give yourself plenty of time to find scholarships that fit your skills and needs. And most applications will require essays and letters of recommendation, so you want to make sure you have plenty of time to pull those together.”

Turner also encourages students to apply for as many scholarships as they qualify for. “There aren’t a lot of big, full-ride scholarships available, but many smaller scholarships can add up to a surprising amount.”

The Scholarship Application When applying for scholarships, attention to detail is an important step to success: • Follow directions carefully. Make sure you have all the supporting materials required, but don’t include anything that is not requested.

• Proofread carefully. Typos and grammar errors can hurt your chances. Have a parent or teacher double-check your application.

• Watch all deadlines. Set up a calendar for application deadlines and make sure you meet them. If you miss one, your application won’t be considered.

Many scholarship applications require some kind of written essay or letter.

• Be specific. Focus on the topics the application requires.

Use concrete examples rather than vague, general statements.

• Be yourself. This is your chance to show scholarship providers what kind of person you are and why they should help pay for your education. Let your personality come through, and include details that reveal who you really are.

• Be honest. Never exaggerate grades, skills or experience.

If you find yourself feeling the need to do so, you’re probably not applying for the right scholarship.

Volunteering and community involvement plays a big role in awarding today’s scholarships. “More and more scholarship providers are looking for well-rounded students who not only take their studies seriously, but also have a long-term commitment to their local communities,” said Turner.

Like a bodybuilder that spends way too much time at the gym, Pain & Gain is a fairly bloated and muscular story.

Inspired by real-life events, this comic thriller features jaw-dropping moments and dark humor, but the film grows rather tiresome after a while.

A totally-pumped Mark Wahlberg plays Daniel Lugo, a Miami bodybuilder heavily involved in the 1990’s personal fitness movement. Lugo helps transforms the sleepy Sun Gym into a happening place where rich clients like Victor Kershaw (Tony Shalhoub) come to get fit.

Frustrated that he can’t get wealthy, Lugo hatches a scheme to make Kershaw’s money his own. Recruiting excon Paul Doyle (Dwayne Johnson) and fitness junkie Adrian Doorbal (Anthony Mackie), Lugo manages to pull off the scam of the century. Unfortunately, these guys have no sense of money management and are soon looking for new victims.

Based on a three-part newspaper series by Miami New Times writer Pete Collins, Pain & Gain has a somewhat authentic feeling to it. Director Michael Bay undermines the serious aspects of the story with dark humor. Gary Baute Rascals Add Former St. Louis Cardinals Pitcher To Staff The team signed a major name to the 2013 coaching staff with the addition of Todd Worrell as assistant pitching coach. He will be with the team for the majority of home games this year, adding to the already experienced staff of Steve Brook (manager), Danny Sawyer (hitting coach), and Caleb Curry (bench coach).

“I’ve had the opportunity to get to know Todd over the past few years, and I’m thrilled that he is able to join our staff on a limited basis in 2013. Along with the knowledge that he will bring to our younger players, Todd will be a valuable resource off the field as well to our guys. Saturday’s Recap Lindenwood’s throwers were the story on Saturday at the MIAA track and field meet, led by Blackwell and Heady winning conference titles.

Heady won Lindenwood’s first MIAA individual title in the weight throw at this year’s indoor competition and added to his trophy case by winning the outdoor hammer. He was in second place after five throws before setting a personal-best of 61.41m in his final attempt. That mark won the event by over two meters.

Blackwell’s victory was one of the biggest surprises of the MIAA meet. She entered with a season-best throw of 44.75m and was not even competing in the top flight for the preliminary throws. She advanced to the finals, though, with a mark of 48.61m on her third attempt.

Blackwell then won the competition on her sixth throw with a mark of 51.10, the second-best mark in Lindenwood history. She captured the conference title, the first individual crown for a Lindenwood woman in any sport, by over a meter.

Jessica Ecker and Bryan Kertz both had bronze finishes in the discus. Also in the discus, Blackwell scored one more point with an eighth-place showing. Also for the men, Kertz finished eighth in the hammer and Edgar Garza was seven in the pole vault. The other scorer for the women was Chelsea Smith coming in eighth in the hammer.

On the track, three Lindenwood runners advanced to Sunday’s finals. China Moore was fourth in the prelims for the women’s 100m hurdles. Ingredients: 3 cups organic fat-free vanilla yogurt 2 cups low fat natural granola 4 cups watermelon, minced 3 cups organic fat-free peach yogurt 2 cups organic crisp rice cereal 2 cups shredded coconut Directions: Spread the vanilla yogurt over bottom of deep glass casserole or trifle dish. Layer remaining ingredients in order listed above in even layers over vanilla yogurt.

Ingredients: 2 cups water 1/3 cup raw sugar (or to taste) 2 cups seedless watermelon puree 1 fresh lemon, sliced thinly 1/4 cup lemon juice 1 teaspoon vanilla extract 2 cups chopped seedless watermelon flesh Directions: In half-gallon pitcher with lid, mix 1 cup of water with sugar until completely dissolved. Stir in rest of water, watermelon puree, sliced lemon, lemon juice and vanilla extract. Stir to mix well and chill thoroughly. Stir in 2 cups of chopped watermelon before serving.

Ingredients: 2 cups cubed watermelon (1/2-inch cubes) 1/2 cup celery, sliced 1/2 cup seedless red grape halves Dash of salt 1/4 cup Greek yogurt 2 tablespoons sliced almonds, toasted Directions: Stir together watermelon, celery, and grapes in bowl. Just before serving, stir salt into yogurt for dressing. (Add water to thin, if necessary.) Pour dressing over fruit; stir until coated.

The DUI Dilemma is Technologically Solvable A man was recently arrested in Wildwood for his seventh DUI offense. One of my pet peeves I’ve written about several times is the blatantly ineffective ways our judiciary handles DUI cases. So far, all they’ve done to solve the problem is levy large fines to fatten local government treasuries, execute fruitless parole actions and occasional prison sentences. Still, the problem continues.

I never blamed MADD for being angry about the revolving door that put repeat DUI offenders back on the street and endangering others, including children.

However, the members I spoke with a few years ago turned out to be loud, vengeful, fundamentalist religious fanatics. I believe there is an essential difference between ordinary religion and fundamentalism, but perhaps these members were in the minority. I admit it prejudiced my opinion a bit, but I still commended MADD for later supporting modern devices to monitor DUI parolees.

I don’t mean to offend anyone, but when I tried to

see the fundamentalism side, I couldn’t get past ignoring every proven fact highly educated scientists are responsible for and taking the word of self-serving zealots. Were it not for modern scientific breakthroughs and the thousands of scientists that brought them about, their more benevolent discoveries wouldn’t have saved humankind from perishing many times over. In this case, they developed electronic gizmos that might solve yet another dilemma.

Our DUI problem can be solved to a much higher degree by using this modern technology. We’ve been putting fools in prison because they can’t control their drinking habits. However, while endangering the public, it isn’t premeditated as with armed criminal actions.

Ankle bracelets with GPS location devices and alcohol sensors have been around for years. Ignition breathalyzers were around even longer. What hasn’t been around is a system that would use them instead of wallowing in revenue enhancing fines, vengeful prison sentences and great numbers of lawyers profiting from it.

The difference in expenditures for current punishment procedures and the cost of the aforementioned gadgets and monitoring systems of DUI parolees is manifest. One website advertises the device for about

$559. Ignition breathalyzers are rented for about $50 to $100 per month and installation fees vary from $50 to $200. Monitoring systems vary, but I understand the state of Missouri already has one in place.

So far, these items will cost the parolee less than a thousand dollars, but one year of parole means rental fees may put it past that mark. With those expenses and whatever fines, court costs and legal fees are involved, it would still be cheaper than paying for parole officers or imprisonment. The cost of imprisoning one person is over $31,000 per year. The salient point is the devices would probably be far more effective in keeping drunks from driving their cars.

Some would say a drunk might get someone else to blow in their breathalyzer. Can you imagine anyone so mentally challenged they would actually do that?

Usually, the drunk is away from home drinking with others in a local pub. Obviously, there’s no chance of another drinker achieving it for them, and a sober passerby might find the liability and illegality for such an act to be fearsome.

To decrease costs and increase effectiveness, I believe the public would be better served by using these electronic devices for DUI offenders instead of parole officers and prisons. It would save those expenses and let the violators continue supporting their families, paying taxes and perhaps even curing a few alcoholics.
