Five-time winner of Big River Running’s Best Neighborhood Support Award, The Ferguson Twilight Run, will have its ninth annual event on Saturday, May 19 starting at 4:30 p.m. Big Papa G will kick off the event with entertainment.

Ferguson’s event will start and end at Plaza at 501, an outdoor entertainment area at 501 South Florissant and Suburban Avenue.

In addition to the host of volunteers on the day of the event, the annual event is a collaboration of Dwayne James, who has been the Race Director since the beginning in 2010, and 20 other people from the St. Louis Region. They come from a background of past runners in other races, some business owners, parents, and other community members. Sponsors of this

year’s event include: Christian Hospital, Negwer Materials, and Big River Running.

Registration is still open and packet pick-up will begin Wednesday, May 16.

Participants from the St. Louis and St. Charles regions are expected to participate as well as virtual runners in California, New York and Dublin, Ireland. James shared that the virtual runners are family members and friends of participants.

“We send them their race shirt prior to the race [day]. We ask them to do the one-mile, the 5K, or the 10K and then post themselves in their shirt with their virtual runner bib and state they’re happy to run with Ferguson. That’s really it. We did this last year; we kept hearing people say they

wanted to participate. They participated in the past, but they moved away, they [couldn’t] do it that day because of a graduation, or other family events. What we wanted to do is have people still be able to participate. We had good participation last year we just hope to expand it.”

Money from registration participants support major causes. Since 2010, the Ferguson Twilight Run has raised and donated $74,000 to local organizations that provide and promote health and fitness programs in North County. This year’s benefactors will be the Emerson Family YMCA summer camp program, the Ferguson Youth Initiative earn-a-bike program, the Ferguson Swim Team, the See ‘NIGHTTIME’ page 2

Mark Pacatte, Director of Child Care for Emerson Family YMCA shared that thanks to this race, last year they were able to sponsor 15 children for their summer camp program.

In 2017 more than 1,600 people participated, representing more than 100 zip codes. This was representative of 79 percent participation outside the Ferguson area. Since 2010, more than 12,600 participants have walked, jogged and raced through the historic neighborhoods of Ferguson.

One citizen who hosted a party during the race one year decided to get more involved the following year by managing one of the water stations. Another Ferguson participant, Evergrace Davis, has participated as a runner every year since 2011 when her aerobics instructor invited her class to participate as a team.

“I like when all of the Ferguson community comes together for one general purpose,” Davis said.

Davis, who expressed that she is passionate about fitness, went on to share that she likes that the community comes together for physical activity because it contributes to becoming healthier and building community spirit.

James states, “We tell our volunteers to clap for the fastest person but also clap for that last person that is either walking that one-mile or walking that 5K. We had a person that was walking the 10K with a cane. That’s an accomplishment so we’re going to make sure that we’re keeping everything safe for that person. We applaud you for doing our race.”

Those who choose to walk are strongly encouraged to participate; you do not have to be a runner. Everyone that crosses the finish line gets a medal. YMCA’s Pacatte shared that their teen group volunteers annually to stand at that line and hand out medals.

Regarding how Ferguson started its race in 2010, James shared, “There were community members doing different aspects of community development. So, we were looking into ways of doing that type of work as a city.”

James also shared that the race is an opportunity to cross various boundaries as it relates to physical fitness, individual health, ethnicities, gender, and generational age differences.

The event is packed with amenities. Parking and shuttle service for participants will be provided at two locations: 1) First Baptist Church, 333 N. Florissant Rd, and 2) McCluer South-Berkeley High School, 201 Brotherton Ln. Ferguson Brewing Company will donate free beer and root beer samples. In addition, water stations will be managed by various organizations and volunteers.

Om Turtle Yoga will be present to provide stretching routines for participants and BKM Fitness Boot Camp will provide pre-race aerobics. After the race, Yoga Buzz will help participants get their post-race stretching. Emerson Family YMCA, who has supported the event since 2010, will provide nutritious snacks after the race. ‘Cheer stations’ along the route will be accommodated by the Jennings High School Band, Jeske Park Band, and others.

Finally, attendees will get the opportunity to enjoy Griffin and the Gargoyles in concert at the finish line.

James stresses, “Even if you don’t want to run, walk, or volunteer—come out for the concert. It’s a free concert. Just come out and enjoy the community.”

Some plans for 2019 have already begun due to it being the tenth anniversary of the event but the primary planning will begin in October. Registration will open immediately following Saturday’s race. COMMUNITY VOICES Education on the rise in North St. Louis County

By Dr. Rance Thomas When North St. Louis County is mentioned by individuals who live in many other parts of the St. Louis metropolitan area, they usually refer to North County as an area with poor education. This is often thought to be the case for some who have fled North County to St. Charles and beyond as well.

In talking with one woman recently, she told me that she was moving out to St. Peters so her children could get a good education. She, along with some others, do not realize that children in North County are receiving a good education.

They tend to think that North County has poor schools and not providing students with excellent education. Some of this is due to some of the schools not being accredited at one time or not fully accredited; however, in spite of this our schools are doing a great job of improving their schools and the education of its students.

Based upon the most recent evaluation, almost all the schools in North County are now provisionally or fully accredited and students are doing well. School officials are also working very hard to ensure that

students receive the best education possible, and they are doing a great job.

This was demonstrated in the last few months when a number of students from various districts received awards for their outstanding achievement. It has really been inspiring to see all these students being recognized for their outstanding achievement. This was apparent with students recognized by some organizations in North County.

For example, North County Churches Uniting for Racial Harmony and Justice recognized fifteen outstanding students for their achievement in education, community service, citizenship, artistic and athletic achievement. These students were selected from 70 outstanding applicants, and it was difficult to choose those who were recognized. This was true because they had outstanding academic achievement as well as outstanding achievement in other areas of their lives. All fifteen students selected with one exception had an “A” average in academic achievement.

In fact, one student not only had straight “A’s,” but she had over 600 hours of com-

munity service.

Several other organizations presented financial grants to a number of students for outstanding achievement including Christian Hospital, Rotary Club of Florissant and the Greater North County Chamber of Commerce. It was really a great honor to listen to their achievement as well.

In listening to the achievement of these students, it made me very proud of being a member of these organizations and being a resident of North County. It is very important that we publicize the wonderful things that exist within our community.

A plaque dedication to honor Hazelwood kicks off the Food Truck Night repatriated Vietnam Era ‘Unknown Season on May 22 Soldier’ is set for May 30 The city of Hazelwood is The city of Florissant along with Old Town Partners will host a dedication to unveil a plaque in honor of First Lieutenant Michael J. Blassie. This will be the 32nd Walk through History plaque in honor of someone who has made a significant contribution to the city of Florissant and/or the nation.

The ceremony will be held on May 3h at 7:45 p.m. with military honors on the corner of St. Jean and rue St. Francois. The plaque dedication will take place during the first Wednesday Night Out festivities “Proud to be an American” which is being hosted by the VFW Post 4105 located at 410 rue St. Francois. The ceremony will conclude with “Taps” at the 8:19 p.m. sunset that evening.

First Lieutenant Michael Joseph Blassie (April 4, 1948 – May 11, 1972) was an officer in the United States Air Force. Prior to the identification of his remains, Blassie was the unknown service member from the Vietnam War buried at the Tomb of the Unknowns at Arlington National Cemetery which is guarded by a special military detail 24 hours, 365 days a year. Michael Blassie is one of the 42 KIA/MIA names engraved on the Vietnam Memorial Obelisk at Koch Park which was dedicated in 1969.

After graduating from St. Louis University High School, Blassie entered the United States Air Force Academy, from which he graduated in 1970. He then attended Undergraduate Pilot Training, receiving his aeronautical rating as an Air Force pilot in 1971.

He subsequently qualified as an A-37 Dragonfly pilot and served as a member of the 8th Special Operations Squadron, deployed to Southeast Asia. He was awarded the Silver Star, Distinguished Flying Cross, Air Medal with Four Oak Leaf Clusters and the Purple Heart which was awarded posthumously. Lt. Blassie died during his 138th combat mission when his A-37B Dragonfly was shot down near An Lộc in what was then South Vietnam.

Partial skeletal remains were retrieved from the area of the crash five months after his aircraft was shot down and were initially identified by Mortuary Affairs as Blassie. The remains were reclassified as unknown when their projected age and height were judged not to match Blassie’s.

Blassie’s remains were designated as the unknown service member from the Vietnam War during a ceremony at Pearl Harbor, Hawaii on May 17, 1984. The remains were then sent to Travis Air Force Base on May 24, and arrived at Andrews Air Force Base the following day.

Many Vietnam veterans, President Ronald Reagan, and First Lady Nancy Reagan visited Blassie as he lay in state in the U.S. Capitol. An Army caisson carried his coffin from the Capitol to the Memorial Amphitheater at Arlington National Cemetery on Memorial Day, May 28, 1984. DNA identification had yet to advance to its current state when Blassie’s remains were repatriated, and he lay in the Tomb of the Unknowns up to 1998, with visitors paying respects but unaware of his identity.

A CBS News report in January 1998 claimed the Vietnam unknown was Blassie, and articles in U.S. Veteran Dispatch in 1994 and 1996 had made the same claim, drawing on Defense Department records.

After Blassie’s family secured permission, the remains of Blassie were exhumed on May 14, 1998. Based on mitochondrial DNA testing, Department of Defense scientists were able to identify Blassie’s remains. On June 30, 1998, the Defense Department announced that the Vietnam Unknown had been identified. On July 10, Blassie’s remains were transported to his family in Florissant for a funeral mass at St. Dismas Catholic Church and were later reinterred at Jefferson Barracks National Cemetery.

Following the removal of Lt. Blassie’s remains from the Tomb of the Unknowns, the marker at Arlington was replaced with one that read “Honoring and Keeping Faith with America’s Missing Servicemen.” Advances in technology, such as those that allowed the identification of Lt. Blassie, may lead to the eventual identification of all interments marked “unknown” from Vietnam.

Hazelwood’s 2018 Food Truck Night schedule includes three upcoming dates. The first one is set for Tuesday, May 22, featuring StaggerCatt as the band. The other events are as follows: June 26, with Shattered Edge and July 31, with NEXT Stl. Each event will feature up to five food trucks serving some of St. Louis’ finest mobile cuisine at Howdershell Park at 6810 Howdershell Road, from 5 p.m. to 8 p.m. The “live” musical entertainment starts at 6 p.m. and ends at 8 p.m.

Rotary Club of Florissant awards $14,000 in scholarships to local students In keeping with its mission of “Service above Self ” during its weekly lunch meeting, the Rotary Club of Florissant awarded $14,000 in scholarships to seven North County high school seniors. The money will help support the students’ post-secondary academic careers at their chosen universities.

To be eligible to receive the scholarships, students had to complete an application, met the GPA requirements, share their school and community service involvement and write an essay. Upon completion, the Rotary Club Scholarship Committee reviewed all application packets to determine this year’s winners. The 2018 Rotary Scholarship winners received $2,000 each, which will be sent to the college of their choice. This year’s scholarship recipients are as follows: Theodore Laesch, Lutheran High School North; Megan Pilla, Incarnate Word Academy; Dacia Slater, McCluer North High School; Collin Fiore, Hazelwood West High School; Tasnim Keddo, Hazelwood West High School; Matthew Gantner, Trinity Catholic High School and Sklyar Cribbett, Marquette Catholic High School.

Kristen Weber is a St. Louis native and the Founder and Director of The L.I.F.E. Foundation (www.lifefoundation-stl.org) , a St. Louis nonprofit that provides resources to empower and encourage youth to achieve academic success. Through her literacy programs she guides children with book selections and continued to notice the lack of selections for multicultural families. This inspired her to write a book where all children see themselves in the pages and create a conversation about the need for more diverse books. Eighth Annual St. Louis Teen Talent Competition winners crowned On April 28, 15 metro area high school acts brought the crowd to their feet when they performed on stage at The Fabulous Fox Theatre in the St. Louis Teen Talent Competition Finals.

Students competed for more than $40,000 in college scholarships, cash awards and special prizes.

The distinguished panel of judges, performing arts professionals with careers spanning film, TV and Broadway, had the difficult job of judging the acts on interpretation, stage presence, technical ability, and originality.

First place and an $8,000 college scholarship, underwritten by Ameren Corporation Charitable Trust, went to 16-year-old Nicaya Wiley from Kirkwood High School who performed to “This Bitter Earth.”

Second place and a $6,000 college scholarship went to Labels (Arielle Adams – 16-year-old from Hazelwood Central High School, Kelsey Carnes – 16-year-old from Francis Howell North High School, Madison Alexander – 14-year-old from Incarnate Word Academy, DessaRae Lampkins,

De’Jai Walker, & Brooke Reese –17-year-olds from Hazelwood Central High School).

Josh Royal is a 17-year-old from Pattonville High School and took the $4,000 scholarship for third place for his performance to “She’s Out of My Life.” The $1,000 cash Audience Choice Award went to Labels for their performance.

The group of 28 finalists will also have the opportunity to perform at a variety of events around the metro area. 2018 public appearances scheduled to date include the Muny, National Dance Week, Taste of Maplewood, Gateway Grizzlies, Shakespeare Festival, and Rising Stars Showcase.

The Finals were recorded by The Nine Network for a special St. Louis Teen Talent Competition program to be aired on Sunday, May 20 at 5 p.m. (with rebroadcasts on May 22 at 9 p.m., May 26 at 2 p.m., and May 27 at 11 a.m.).

The Ninth Annual St. Louis Teen Talent Competition at The Fabulous Fox has been scheduled for April 13, 2019.

The Seventh Annual Florissant Resident Document Shredding Day was held on April 21 at St. Ferdinand Park- rear parking lot from 9 a.m. to noon. All information was destroyed upon delivery in a manner to which it cannot be recognized or recreated. All paper will then be recycled. It was estimated that over 34,000 pounds of paper shredded and Meridian Waste Services collected and recycled 450 pounds of cardboard.

A special thank you to Cintas Document Management Company for professionally shredding the information and to Meridian Waste Services for donating the cardboard recycles dumpsters.

Traditional Thai new year celebration – The Songkran Festival – held in Florissant On April 22 the traditional Thai New Year Festival- the Songkran Festival was held at Wat Phrasriratanaram, the Thai Buddist Temple located at 890 Lindsay Lane in Florissant. There was a large variety of Thai and Lao cuisine on hand to sample which is popular with visitors with that heritage and also with the many Florissant residents who attended. The large oak tree outside the Council Chambers side door is dead from Verticillium Wilt Disease for which there is no cure and was removed to prevent the disease from spreading and also for aesthetic and safety reasons.

Florissant Mayor Thomas Schneider said, “When I first came to city hall in the mid-70s there were probably twice as many large trees on lawn. Last year we had to remove one near the corner of St. Francois and Boone. Many of the old trees were planted by Joseph Peters who was elected mayor in 1897. City hall is located on the property that was his residence in the late 1800s and early 1900s.”

Best-selling author shares her views on race, politics with Normandy Crosscurrents students

Normandy Crosscurrents provides students an opportunity to meet and connect with students and adults from other cultures and communities to discuss issues like race, class, and social injustice.

New York Times best-selling author Ijeoma Oluo made a stop at the Normandy 7th-8th Grade Center (N78C) during her recent visit to St. Louis.

Oluo was in town for a speaking engagement at Southern Illinois University-Edwardsville (SIUE) to discuss her book, “So You Want to Talk About Race,” and requested to meet with Normandy Crosscurrents students. Oluo strives to make herself available to speak to young people while she travels on business and welcomes opportunities to connect with students of color.

In her original request to speak with students, Oluo asked for a high school class. However, Normandy offers a humanities-based project lab at the middle school where discussions of race are a part of the syllabus. It was a natural choice.

The Normandy 7th-8th Grade Center’s Crosscurrents project is led by English Language Arts teacher Dr. Inda Schaenen. The project is a cross-cultural, interscholastic program which brings students and adults from different schools together to build cross-community understanding through interpersonal relationships and group activities, shared readings, and dialogue. Now in its third year, the Crosscurrents classes have collaborated with students and staff from Al Salam Day School, John Burroughs School, Kirkwood High School, and Wydown Middle in the Clayton School District.

As in other Crosscurrents gatherings, the N78C students discussed with Oluo complex issues most adults would shy away from like gentrification, public school funding and inequity in education, police relations and racial profiling and voting.

Oluo urged students to take a stand on issues they feel strongly about by using their voice at the polls.

“When you turn 18, you’re given a huge amount of power,” Oluo said. “Your city council and school board make a lot of decisions about how things go here at this school. Not that many people vote in local elections and that means your vote is even more powerful.”

It was the racism Oluo experienced growing up in a predominantly white community in Seattle,

Washington that encouraged her to take a stand through her writing. The fact that Oluo rose from humble beginnings to a woman of her stature left an impression on students.

N78C student Javion Finney said, “She shared that her school didn’t have the same resources as kids who went to better schools.”

Oluo explained that poorer neighborhoods where homeownership and property values are low have less taxes to fund public schools. High school graduates from schools with fewer resources are less likely to get into good colleges and earn living wages which can lead to generational poverty.

Oluo continued, “Then when it comes time to look at test scores to determine which schools get additional funding, the schools that don’t test well and probably have fewer resources, get less funding that way. That’s not fair. You kids aren’t earning that money.”

Oluo spoke at length about the state of public schools in Washington and how the Supreme Court declared the state in violation of the Constitution by not providing equal education to all students. Over the years, she said public schools in the state have become one of the most segregated with the largest achievement gaps nationwide.

When Schaenen prompted the students to describe the racial landscape in the Normandy community, N78C student Makhia Griffin said, “People judge us because we go to a certain school.

Everyone thinks that we aren’t smart or we can’t do as much as others.”

However, the students found solace in knowing that, like Oluo, one can rise above their current circumstances.

In a post on her Instagram (social media) account, Olou shared her impression of the Normandy 7th-8th Grade Center students with her many followers.

“Thank you so much to the middle school students at Normandy Schools for talking with me,” Oluo wrote. “I appreciate your candor, your insight, and your amazing sense of humor.”

Rascal’s open at home in O’Fallon The River City Rascals professional baseball team play in the West Division of the Frontier League with their home games at CarShield field in O’Fallon.

So far the two games the Rascals have played on the road in the Windy City Thunderbolt stadium did not fare so well. They dropped the contests 4-3 then 5-2 and then had inclement weather cancel the final game.

They will set foot on CarShield field on Tuesday, May 15 for the season opener.

So far in the very young season, Steve Brook the manager has seen a good performance from this starting pitcher in game one that the Rascals dropped 4-3.

Josh Kimborowicz, the 6’3” right-hander, threw six innings, allowed only four hits, one walk, two runs but struck out seven of the Thunderbolt batters.

They were ranked number one as they prepared for the NCAA (National Collegiate Athletic Association) Quarterfinals against the Regis Rangers from Denver, Colorado on the Lions home field Hunter Stadium recently.

The Rangers unfortunately defeated the Lindenwood team during a double-overtime contest Saturday evening. Lindenwood scored two goals in the final 45 seconds of regulation to force the game to overtime.

Lindenwood got off to a hot start, scoring the first five goals of the game, and nine of the first 11 goals. The Lions built themselves a 9-2 lead with 9:07 remaining in the first half.

However, the next 26 minutes of game time, the Rangers scored nine unanswered goals, and took an 11-9 lead with 13:36 left in the game.

The two teams exchanged goals over the next 12 minutes, but Regis maintained its two-goal lead with under 50 seconds remaining. Lindenwood netted two goals in the final 45 seconds to even the score and push the game to overtime.

After each team failed to score during the first three minute overtime period, the two teams headed into a second sudden-death frame.

Just 59 seconds into the second overtime period, Regis netted the game-winning goal off of a free-position attempt to prevail by the final score of 15-14.

Highlights for the Lady Lions: • Rachel Ortell made 12 saves in goal, including eight during the second half, and two during overtime. Ortell made several crucial stops down the stretch for the Lions, to help the team force overtime.

• Allison Hurley had a team-leading six points in the game, including three goals.

• Sophie Buelow, Hannah Doughty, and Maria Johnson also had hat tricks for Lindenwood • Sami Smit and Cassie Stucklen each added one score.

• Shannon Modl was a force on the draw controls for the Lions, securing 10 wins inside the circle.

Directions: Use fork to prick sweet potato.

“I Feel Pretty”

Amy Schumer’s ‘I Feel Pretty’ tackles body issues

In 2001, the Farrelly Brothers, known mainly for outrageous comedies, tackled a few serious issues in “Shallow Hal.” Jack Black starred as Hal, an up-and-coming executive always trying to hook up with gorgeous women. A chance encounter with self-help guru Tony Robbins helped him see the beauty within women that he would normally pass up. With this new perspective, Hal falls in love with Rosemary, an overweight woman who devotes her life to helping other people.

In much the same way “I Feel Pretty,” a refreshing comedy starring Amy Schumer, heads into the same territory.

Schumer stars as Renee Bennett, an ambitious young woman co-managing a website for Lily LeClair, a high-end cosmetics company. Self-conscious about her weight and appearance, Renee tries to improve herself until a hard knock to the head makes her see herself in a new light. When she looks in the mirror, Renee now sees the woman she always wanted to be.

With nods to both “Shallow Hal” and the classic Tom Hanks comedy “Big,” “I Feel Pretty” really has something to say. Renee Bennett is a great lady, but, because she works for a cosmetics company, she gets confused about what being beautiful really means. That bump to the head changes her perspective, unlocking the talent and personality she always possessed.

On the other hand, writer/directors Abby Kohn and Marc Silverstein are rather unfair to the so-called “beautiful people” in this movie. Renee’s female co-workers are portrayed as shallow stick-figures that never get a chance to develop a decent personality. Playing Avery, the granddaughter of the company’s founder, Michelle Williams’ character has a high squeaky voice that keeps people from treating her seriously. Avery does have a

law degree, but she lets that voice hold her back.

Like “Big,” this comedy is about wish fulfillment and the consequences of getting what you want. When Renee unleashes her sense of humor, honesty and personality, she wows everyone, including her bosses. A scene where she crashes a bikini contest also is enlightening. Even though she loses, she earns a ton of respect—and a boyfriend—in the process. As a characPhoto courtesy STX Entertainment ter points out after the contest, she is the whole package.

“I Feel Pretty” has taken some heat about its themes. Some writers feel it is nothing but a comedy about body-shaming. In truth, this film is a celebration of being yourself. Renee really is pretty, funny, smart and a hard-worker, but she was too self-conscious about her appearance to shine until her accident. Hang ups Technology can be embarrassingly cruel at times. This typically happens when someone’s smart phone gets bored and decides to “smart off.”

It starts by randomly selecting a number from the contact list and dialing. This usually occurs at the most inappropriate moment. This incident is more commonly known as “butt dialing.”

Unfortunately, for some unknown reason my backside favors my son-in-law. My device has actually dialed him right as I was holding the phone in my hand without my fingers or my back section ever touching the dial buttons.

Because of this, I have had to repeatedly convince my daughter that I am not an old cougar stalking her young husband.

One of these inappropriate times happened recently at midnight, my Midwest time, and 2 a.m. their East Coast time. My sneaky backside teamed up with my smart aleck smart phone and dialed away.

There I was late one night suffering insomnia and reading at midnight. I happened to nudge my phone on the nightstand while putting away my book. Then without reason, it started buzzing. I

By Cindy Moore picked it up and to my horror, saw that it was dialing my son-in-law…in Florida…at 2 a.m. their time! I immediately jabbed at the cancel button only to punch the speaker button, then the mute button, then the FaceTime button and after a few more panicky pokes, I threw it against the wall and it stopped. Whew, should have thought of that first. Hopefully the kids were in a deep comatose slumber and didn’t hear…

The phone rang. Oopsie!

It was him! I apologized profusely on my phone’s behalf.

He apparently went right back to sleep, but my daughter was panic-stricken and mumbled to him in a traumatized voice demanding to know who had died. She was agitated the rest of the night and wide awake as if it were mid-afternoon all along wondering if I actually did have secret longings for her husband.

Problem: At some point, I may urgently have to talk to my son-in-law. He is a lawyer and I might be in need of legal counsel.

Of course, it will be one of those times when I am only permitted one phone call by the police.

I will dial my son-in-law and he will answer in a not-so-friendly-voice, “Seriously, you really need to get a new phone.”
