By Sara Hardin Ferguson city officials swore in Delrish Moss as the city’s new Police Chief at the Ferguson Community Center on May 9. Moss, 51, served as a Miami law enforcement officer for the past 32 years. Most recently, he served as the supervisor of Miami Police Department’s Public Information/Community Relations Unit. He was promoted to Senior Executive Assistant to the Chief of Police in May 2008, serving as the city of Miami Police Department’s Commander of Public Information and main advisor to the chief of police. Moss replaces former Ferguson Police Chief Tom Jackson, who announced his resignation in March 2015 after the Justice Department reported racial bias in Ferguson’s criminal justice system. Moss hopes to diversify the city’s police department in order to more effectively reflect the community’s demographic. “Ferguson needs a lot of things,” Moss told the Herald. “It needs a massive recruiting drive to become more reflective of the community. You can’t tell me there are no qualified AfricanAmericans in that community.” Moss’s first remarks as Ferguson

Seniors receive scholarships Chief of Police reflected his intent to ensure that the department’s protection of the community is safe and just under his command. His brief speech was met with a standing ovation. “If you work hard, if you stay honest and committed, if you maintain respect for the community and do your job well, we will get along just fine,” Moss told his offers after taking the oath of office. “If you fall short of that, and it’s through a mistake of the head, we will work to correct that. But if you do it with malice, if you do the job in a way that disrespects the badge that you hold, I will see to it that you are either removed from police service, or further prosecuted.”
