By Sara Hardin Throughout May, North County Incorporated is hosting a series of workshops for small businesses in Ferguson, Dellwood and Jennings. This is the first time these workshops have been offered and they are at no cost to the participating businesses.

“NCI and its partners (the St. Louis Regional Chamber and the St. Louis Economic Development Partnership) are providing a quality learning experience that will enable the small business community in Ferguson, Dellwood, and Jennings to generate more revenue, acquire and retain talented employees, and access tools that will help to grow business capacity,” explained Greg Laposa, Project Manager for the St. Louis Regional Chamber.

North County Inc. invites for-profit small businesses to attend workshops that cover various topics, including developing a successful business plan, financial management, public relations, digital marketing and social media, effective sales techniques, and more.

“Increasing knowledge about the best practices of running a business will help these business owners in regard to recovery and stabilization, as well as help them position their business for

future growth,” said Rebecca Zoll, President and CEO of North County Inc. The workshops rely on volunteer instructors focusing on addressing the specific needs of business owners, with the main goal being to expand business owners’ knowledge and understanding of how to ensure the success and continual growth of their business.

“Businesses will gain unique access to quality instruction and expertise that will equip them with the tools necessary to further grow their business,” said Laposa. “The workshops move beyond the basics of business by customizing each session to the needs expressed by students participating. We anticipate that these workshops provide knowledge and tools that will have a significant impact on the long-term growth of the businesses and thereby positively impact their respective communities.”

Many small businesses took a big hit following the crises in Ferguson, and as controversy and strife shook the area, traffic in small businesses slowed considerably.

“North County Inc. has worked with the small businesses in Dellwood, Ferguson and Jennings throughout the

past 10 months in an effort to assist with stabilization during the crises,” said Zoll. “This is a natural extension of the work started back in August, and we are committed to helping the small businesses throughout the West Florissant and Florissant Road corridors as they work toward recovery. Florissant Arbor Day celebration goes on despite stormy weather Stormy weather came through in the morning of the traditional Arbor Day celebration so the ceremony took place under the outdoor ice rink on Thursday April 9. The Gardeners of Florissant Club donated a Royal Frost Birth in memory of Mary Margaret Kettenbach, a Bur Oak in memory of Margaret Easches, a Purple Robe Locust in memory of Jane Keence and a Scarlet Oak in memory of Harold Ernst.

NCCU works to bring police and community together North County Churches Uniting for Racial Harmony and Justice’s “Discussion and Solutions Committee” is making progress in bringing the police and African-American community together. This group was organized following a number of meetings between police officials, mayors, and clergy since the killing of Michael Brown by police officer Darren Wilson in Ferguson due to the number of protests and violence that have occurred since August.

In spite of a lack of publicity and fanfare, the group has been steadily moving forward with action plans.

President Rance Thomas stated, “We have been successful in quietly making changes that will make a difference in the relationship between the police and the community.”

Even though the committee has not been directly involved, action taken by this committee has resulted in a number of police departments increasing their involvement with school districts, community organizations, and churches.

For example, the Alton Police Department has begun to participate in many activities within the Alton community and has met with a number of groups, reestablishing and reconstituting its Human Relations Commission to make it more effective. Secondly, NCCU Coordinator of Police-Community Collaboration or Partnership, Rev. Michael Krewson, has been successful in working out an arrangement with the Rev. (Dr.) Freddie Clark, of the largest African-American Church in North County, Shalom. In addition, the St. Louis County Police Department has worked to form a softball team and join the church’s softball league.

All police departments represented on the Discussion and Solution Committee agreed to work with churches to explore ways they can form a partnership together to work on issues that exist within the community. In order to further this effort, the committee will hold another breakfast meeting between mayors, police officials, clergy, and others on May 20 to enhance this process.

This committee is reviewing the work of the Ferguson Commission and the meetings of other organizations in an attempt to identify ways to increase diversity within police departments in the St. Louis Metropolitan area. In addition to partnering with churches, this committee is exploring ways to bring the police and community together every day and not just during times of trouble.

Hazelwood Police Department targets impaired drivers with sobriety checkpoints The Hazelwood Police Department (HPD) will be conducting numerous high-visibility sobriety checkpoints throughout the city this upcoming summer.

The first checkpoint is scheduled for the weekend of May 22. Several others have been scheduled through the summer and the sobriety checkpoints will be supplemented with saturation patrols. This effective nationwide drunk driving crackdown will be supported by national paid advertising, creating a comprehensive campaign to curb drunk driving.

Hazelwood Police Chief Gregg Hall said, “Our police officers will be aggressively looking for drunk drivers during the crackdown and they will arrest anyone caught driving drunk. Every year, about one-third of all motor vehicle deaths involve one or more impaired drivers or motorcycle operators.” There were 191 people killed, and 640 seriously injured, in 2014 Missouri traffic crashes that involved at least one substance-impaired driver (alcohol and/or drugs).

According to Chief Hall, “Research has shown that high-visibility enforcement like sobriety checkpoints reduce drunken driving fatalities by as much as 20 percent. By joining this nationwide effort, we will make Hazelwood’s roadways safer for everyone. We will continue to encourage drivers to make a simple, smart choice to drive sober.”

the wheel drunk is a bad idea. Unfortunately, not only does drinking impair your ability to operate a vehicle safely, but it also impairs your judgement and good sense about whether you can, or should, drive. If you have any doubt about your sobriety, do not get behind the wheel.

If you choose to drive impaired, you will be arrested. No warning. No excuses,” Chief Hall added.

Chief Hall noted that being arrested for driving drunk brings a wide range of negative consequences into one’s life. Intoxicated drivers face jail time, loss of their driver’s licenses, and steep financial consequences such as higher insurance rates, court costs, attorney fees, lost time at work, and the potential loss of employment. When family, friends and co-workers find out, violators often face personal embarrassment.

“Driving drunk is simply not worth the risk, so don’t take the chance. Remember, we will be out in force and we will be watching, so drive sober,” said Chief Hall.

New brewpub to open in Maryland Heights in August Standard Brewing Company, a new brewpub to be located at 12322 Dorsett Road in Maryland Heights, is scheduled to open for business in late August. The brewpub, housed in the old Fuddruckers restaurant, will feature a variety of handcrafted beers brewed on-site as well as artisanal, beer grain-crusted pizzas from partners Pulse Pizza.

“We want to make Maryland Heights a mecca for craft beer in West County,” said co-founder Jeff Harlan. “With the popularity of craft beer continuing to rise, there is plenty of room in the market for a brewpub that also has a focus on great food and atmosphere.”

The newly refurbished brewpub will seat over 150 guests and the ample patio will increase the number of thirsty patrons by 40. Guests near the bar will have an unobstructed view of the 3.5 barrel brewery where Head Brewer Jeff “Jonesy” Jones will produce Standard’s initial flagship beers: an IPA, Hefeweizen, blond ale and a stout, all brewed to style.

“We want to set the standard for craft beer. We take pride in serving our beers as fresh as possible, so most draughts will be pulled straight from the bright tanks.” Jones said. “We also plan to offer growlers for carryout along with our artisanal pizzas.”

Harlan notes that the brewpub will also be open for lunch.

“We wanted to serve a food menu that really pairs well with beer or stands on its own,” said Harlan. “We are excited for the partnership with Pulse Pizza’s J.R. Gates.”

This survey looked at how knowledgeable Americans in the 60 to 75 age bracket are on such matters as life expectancy, Social Security claims, long term healthcare needs, investment risks, and more.

Regional Business Council invites applications for grant funding The St. Louis Regional Business Council (RBC) is accepting applications for the It’s Our Region Fund’s Small Change – Big Impact Grants, a philanthropic initiative that reflects the RBC’s commitment to improving the quality of life for all St. Louisans.

“This fund makes a critical difference to dozens of worthy organizations who have capital needs that are difficult for them to address. It is a privilege to be a part of making a significant difference in our community,” states Kathy Osborn, Executive Director of the Regional Business Council.

Applications will be accepted until June 19. The Small ChangeBig Impact grants support one-time capital improvement projects in the $1,000 to $10,000 range for non-profits, community agencies and municipalities.

These kinds of projects are often difficult for smaller agencies to fund. While they may seem small, they can have an enormous impact because they are typically at places used and appreciated by many people every day.

Interested groups and municipalities must submit an application describing the desired capital project and the anticipated budget. Applications are encouraged from all 16 metropolitan counties. The RBC plans to award $100,000 in grants, depending upon the breadth, quality and diversity of the project requests. Winning recipients will be announced this fall.

Ferguson Middle School girls participate in first 5K run The Girls on Track team at Ferguson Middle School can now add to their list of accomplishments, “successfully completed a 5K run.” The students participated in the Girls on the Run 5K run, which was held May 9.

“Each and every girl on the team ran courageously, had an absolute blast, and I’m very proud of them!” said Wendie Cummings, head coach of the team and director of bands at Ferguson Middle School.

Cummings has been coaching Girls on the Run for 10 years; however, this is the first year she’s coached Ferguson Middle School students. After teaching band at the elementary level for seven years, she was reassigned this school year to Ferguson Middle. It was only natural that she start a team at the school with the goal of participating in the annual Girls On the Run 5K. Each of the student runners was partnered with an adult buddy, who ran the race with them.

Cummings ran with the team’s strongest runner – Octavia Williams, and they completed the race in 24 minutes. “That’s a super-fast time for a middle schooler,” she said.

“Even if I got tired during the race and felt like stopping, I thought about positive things - like feeling good about finishing strong. I learned a lot of lessons in Girls on Track, like stay outside the girl box (which means be confident about being yourself and don’t cave to peer pressure),” said Williams. “I also learned that Molly Barker, the founder of Girls on the Run, started with one great idea and had one team of girls in North Carolina back in 1996. Since it was such a good idea, it spread all over the country and became a great success. I hope to make a big impact on the world

Hazelwood School District announces additional new hires The Hazelwood School District (HSD) Board of Education is proud to announce the hiring of additional new administrators for the 2015-2016 school year.

At the April 14 board meeting, the Board of Education approved the hiring of the following administrators: Ty McNichols was appointed principal at Barrington Elementary.

Dr. McNichols previously served as superintendent of the Normandy School District, later known as the Normandy Schools Collaborative. Prior to working in Normandy, Dr. McNichols served as assistant superintendent of learning and accountability for the Hazelwood School District from 2008-2011. Dr. McNichols earned his doctor of education in education administration from the University of Missouri-St. Louis in 1999.

Jason Cox will serve as principal at McCurdy Elementary. Previously he served as instructional specialist at Walker Elementary School in the Hazelwood School District and has been with the District since 2001. He earned a master’s of science in education from Southern Illinois University Edwardsville.

Nicole Huffman will serve as principal at Northwest Middle. Previously she served as assistant principal at Central High and has been with the District since 2012. She earned a master’s of arts in educational administration from Lindenwood University in 2007.

“I welcome Dr. McNichols back to the Hazelwood School District. Baby blues My grandbaby is over for a two-week visit. I almost forgot what it was like to have a tiny one around. In some ways, babies haven’t changed.

He’s like a sweet, huggable tube of toothpaste with an opened cap on top and bottom, just squeeze him in the middle and you’ve got goo coming out both ends.

While babies haven’t changed much, baby-raising sure has.

It’s been a while since I’ve cared for one and good thing; by today’s standards apparently the poor kid would be safer being raised by a barn cat.

In my day, we were handed the screaming bundle and shown the door. I sat untethered, holding the little nipper in my arms without the aid of either a car seat or seat belt as my husband zigzagged through perilous traffic. We made it home safely only to put the baby in a hazardous crib furnished with those now-outlawed, slide-down railings.

Try and walk out of the hospital with your baby today. Babies are released to their parents only after fingerprint and retina screenings are administered along with skin scrapings to match DNA. Then a urine specimen is extracted for good measure—and that’s just to take junior out of his basinet to change his diaper.

It doesn’t end there. Before exiting the building, a safety seat must be installed in the car. And one which meets strict government standards appropriate for the infant’s age, weight, height and suit-

ably upholstered in a manner which compliments the baby’s personal color analysis. Recently, a child was removed from parental custody because the couple mistakenly selected a seat covered in burgundy broadcloth. It totally clashed with their baby’s flaming orange hair.

Child Services snatched the tot away and forced the parents into a program to identify complimentary color swatches before returning the child.

And parents must be aware of this new law enacted by Congress. It states: Cars transporting children of any age must be equipped with the means to play non-stop music from Disney’s animated feature, “Frozen.” Failure to comply will result in a mandatory sensitivity training session for parents who will be confined to a padded cell forced to listen to 24 hours of “Let It Go” at full volume.

With such tight rules today, I doubt I would even be allowed to raise a barn cat.

Local Author Spotlight: Bill L. Little Bill L. Little is the retired pastor of Christ Memorial Baptist Church in St. Louis, Missouri where he served as senior pastor for more than fifty-one years. After retirement he served for two years as a hospice chaplain for Unity Hospice of greater St. Louis. He is author of twelve published books and has led seminars for major corporations all over the United States, Canada, and Puerto Rico. He has also done sports psychology for two major league baseball teams and is a retired Missouri state licensed psychologist.

Bill worked for ten years as program director for the St. Louis Cancer Support Center that he and his wife Teresa Gay founded. He was also an on air counselor for KMOX (CBS) radio for more than fifteen years.

Bill was born in Southeast Missouri in 1935. He graduated from East Texas Baptist University with a BA in Hisory in 1958, graduated from Midwestern Baptist Seminary with a Master’s degree in theology in 1964, graduated from Southern Illinois University with a MS degree in counseling in 1967, and graduated from Washington University in St. Louis with a Ph.D. in counseling in 1985.

He and his wife, Gay, have six children, eleven grandchildren, and three great-grandchildren between them. Gay remains active as a hospice admin-

istrator. Bill remains active with writing and speaking engagements. They live in St. Charles, Missouri.

Bill’s new book “Lessons Learned From Hospice Patients” contains real stories of patients in the facility. He has compiled the life-enriching lessons he has learned from them into one inspiring read. In this book, the author explains that many patients are put into hospice care sooner than later in order to ease their pain and raise the quality of life. These reductions of suffering and a heightened quality of life are major factors that increase life expectancy.

“Lessons Learned From Hospice Patients” also contains a section that relates to patients, which gives proven approaches to communication that will enrich relationships between patients and healthcare providers, family members and others. It is a section that can apply to all relationships.

Serving family and friends the most mouthwatering grilled entrees with ease requires a little know-how and a few crowd-pleasing recipes.

From versatile chicken to hearty ribs to tender seafood, it’s never been more fun to incorporate new flavors into grilled cuisine.

For the best results on the grill, keep these tips in mind: • A grill is not an oven, so don’t walk away from it when it’s on. Organize what you’ll need ahead of time; no running back and forth.

• Always scrape hot grill grates clean with a wire brush so food will release more easily. Before cooking, try using tongs to dip paper towels lightly into oil and swipe over the grates.

• If the meat or skin sticks, it’s not ready to be turned. Let it sit for another minute or two.

• Try chicken thighs, which have a deeper, richer flavor than breast meat.

• The pork tenderloin can withstand the dry heat of the grill and stay moist.

• A safe inside temperature for ground beef is 160°F; medium steaks is 140°F. Heat poultry to 165°F and whole cuts like breasts to 170°F. Medium pork should be 150°F. Seafood should be 145°F. • For maximum flavor and juiciness, let meat rest 5-10 minutes before cutting or serving.

Over the Fence

All talk; no listen One of the most annoying habits are those of someone who insists on engaging you in conversation and does all the talking while ignoring anything you say.

I have recently experienced this phenomenon several times. One was in a waiting room where I waited for some test results when a woman sat next to me and began loudly jabbering at me. She paid no attention to the fact I was reading a newspaper nor did she hear anything I said or anyone else said. I learned all about her husband and her dogs.

Later, her husband returned from treatment and she introduced us. During her non-stop babbling, he tried with no success to ease her out the door. It became obvious she wouldn’t shut up nor would she leave unless forced. In the entire time, she didn’t appear to hear a word anyone said including a nurse discussing last minute treatment instructions with her husband.

During all this, I remained calm and polite…on the outside. Inside, I was repressing an urge to duct tape her mouth shut in hopes she would explode and disintegrate.

I had the same unfortunate experience with a friend who took it upon himself to call me every night after a few cocktails to ask how I was while I convalesced from pneumonia and cancer treatments. That was nice of him but I doubt he heard my answer. He quickly began repeating the same stories about himself and his future projects and intentions, most of which he had been telling me about repeatedly for months. On and on he went while I sat politely listening instead of getting much needed rest.

My illness finally overcame my courtesy. I quit answering the phone. It finally occurred to me these people weren’t interested in me or anyone else as long as we continued silently listening to them.

They seemed mostly engrossed in themselves. To prove it, between my friend’s occasional breaths of oxygen or cocktail refills, I sometimes got a few words in. I asked him if his underwear was too tight to see if he heard me. He didn’t.

Being a good listener sometimes has drawbacks. Nearly everyone likes to talk about themselves at times, but if it’s all talk and no listen, they should go into politics and stop boring everyone else to tears.

This is probably the same neuroses of people using cell phones in public places like restaurants. One really doesn’t mind if

someone answers a call quietly for a minute or two and hangs up. It’s the ones who have lengthy conversations at a decibel level that guarantees everyone within earshot will hear them. I finally understood recently after a loud-mouth woman in the infusion room at the cancer facility had lengthy conversations with someone on her cell phone. I doubt she realized or cared that many patients receiving chemotherapy preferred rest and quiet during the involved process.

Once again, the conversation was one-sided, overly loud and the epitome of the infamous, narcissistic “Me Generation” that started back in the nineties.

In other words, I finally realized it may be subliminally intentional and these people need professional help…or perhaps a swift kick.

One of the shortest presidential speeches on record was Abe Lincoln’s famous Gettysburg Address. Too bad some folks never learned this wonderful technique including all the other presidents and the selfabsorbed people they replicated.
