The Hazelwood Police Department holds events designed to engage with the community and to build relationships between officers and citizens

Recognizing our responsibility to maintain order, while affording dignity and respect to every individual, our objective is to improve the quality of life through a community partnership which promotes safe, secure neighborhoods.”

The Hazelwood Police Department (HPD) aims to carry out this mission by going beyond the function of law enforcement in its community. The HPD is providing Hazelwood’s citizens one-on-one opportunities to meet and talk with police officers that patrol its city tomorrow, May 23 at its ‘Coffee & Cake With A Cop’ event, 8:30 to 10 a.m. at McDonald’s Restaurant located at 6720 Howdershell Road.

Residents will be treated to McCafé Coffee and cake at the meet-up. Those who engage with an officer at the event will have an opportunity to spin McDonald’s Wheel to win food coupons. The HPD desires residents utilize the time to ask questions, express concerns, and become better acquainted with the officers that patrol their community. Law enforcement believes that this is a great opportunity to discuss any neighborhood problems, safety issues and ways to reduce crime.

When Sgt. Ken Eckardt took over the position of Neighborhood Action Team (NAT) Supervisor, one of his first initiatives was to reach out to business owners to collaborate in community engagement opportunities in a social setting. He states that when they hosted an event at the McDonald’s on Pershall approximately three years ago, an estimated 40

people were in attendance.

“This is the basic start. We do the ‘Coffee & Cake With A Cop’ annually,” stated Eckardt.

Hazelwood residents who miss the May 23 event will be given another opportunity on June 11 at the HPD’s ‘Breakfast with Badges’ event at Denny’s Restaurant located at 5789 Campus Parkway from 8 to 10 a.m. Residents will receive a complimentary breakfast and be given the same opportunity for discussions with Hazelwood officers.

“We have done the ‘Breakfast with Badges’ now for three years, although we had similar events prior to the previous two that were named differently,” shared Eckardt. “It is the same concept with regards to event goals for the ‘Coffee and Cake’ (event), but See ‘COFFEE’ page 2

It takes a community We are so fortunate to be located in Ferguson. We are surrounded by several prominent companies and foundations that are invested in our community and our future generation of innovators. The heart of the Challenger Learning Center’s programs are simulated space missions, which enable children to take on the roles of scientists, astronauts and engineers.

Several area companies and foundations, including Emerson, The Boeing Company, Verizon, the Saigh Foundation and the Missouri Space Grant Foundation have all provided funding to the Challenger Learning Center so that we can provide these immersive learning experiences to thousands of students and teachers in underserved communities throughout the St. Louis region.

Community support goes beyond offsetting costs for those with financial need: It also enables us to create new ways of supporting STEM learning in the St. Louis region. Launching this fall, the Innovative Igniter program – funded

by Emerson and executed in partnership with Maryville University – is one such initiative. Thanks to this community support, this program will deliver engineering enrichment activities as part of after school STEM clubs to approximately 200 under-resourced elementary and middle school students and professional development for ten “STEM Champion” educators. The program, which will take place during the 2019-20 and 2020-21 school years, will include several area school districts, including: Ferguson-Florissant, Ritenour, Jennings, Riverview, and Nor-

mandy. In addition, students participating in the summer program at Maryville in 2020 and 20201 will have the opportunity to visit the Challenger Learning Center for simulated space missions and design engineering workshops.

Thanks to supporters, learning doesn’t take a summer vacation. Organizations such as the Clark-Fox Family Foundation’s Blueprint4Summer program provide us funding for summer camp scholarships so that more kids can participate in a week of STEM adventures. Meanwhile, Express Scripts is funding a special three-day “Maker Camp” for educators looking to incorporate maker activities into their curriculum. The three-day astronomy-themed camp is a far cry from a typical teacher professional development, and will include lots of hands-on activities for teachers to jazz up their curriculum.

Visitors to the Challenger Learning Center can also look forward to a new outdoor rocket launch and shaded seating area for outdoor lunches and programming. The area, called the “Launch & Lunch” site is funded by the Employee Community Fund of Boeing-St. Louis.

The fund, which is managed and controlled by Boeing employees, is a great example of how individuals pull together to gives back to St. Louis. This funding has enabled a great partnership with North and South Technical High Schools, who are helping to design and build the outdoor rocket launch area.

In addition to companies and foundations, we depend on support from individuals. One way that individuals have

supported us is through the St. Louis Community Foundation’s GiveSTL Day, which will take place this year on May 1. The program provides an opportunity for individuals to learn about and support nonprofit organizations in the St. Louis area – and have the opportunity to win some pretty great prizes! Thank you to everyone who has supported us and continues to support us in some way--whether it is sharing about an experience participating in a simulated space mission with your friends and family, contributing your time or treasure to us, or by sharing a post from our FaceBook page or Twitter feed.

We hope that everyone in the community will have the opportunity to experience a Challenger Learning Center program – and benefit from the generosity of the St. Louis community.

Community partnership brings free eye care to North County first responders Through the generosity of 911 Vision Foundation, founded by Dr. Jay Pepose of Pepose Vision Institute, and in partnership with the University of Missouri - St. Louis College of Optometry, North County Inc., a regional development association and Northwest Chamber of Commerce, North County area police officers, firefighters and paramedics receive laser vision correction at no cost. The foundation was established in 2001 after the 911 terrorist attack.

“I wanted to make a difference. I recognized the negative impact eye glasses and contact lenses had on first responders when wearing them under masks, including the impact of smoke and their ability to see clearly in emergency situations,” said Dr. Pepose “Police and paramedics face their own challenges as well when they wear corrective lenses while providing protection and emergency medical care.”

“When effective collaboration takes place, great things happen. By working together, North County first responders will not only perform better in their respective life-saving jobs, but the community will also be better served,” said Rebecca Zoll, president and CEO of North County Inc. “We are extremely grateful for the generosity

of the 911 Vision Foundation and college of optometry for choosing to provide these services to our North County officers of the law.

The 911 Vision Foundation choose Florissant and Hazelwood for its initial service rollout.

Currently, the foundation has provided Lasik care to 15 officers. By the end of May, up to 20 first responders are expected to receive the eye procedure.

“Knowing my officers are thoroughly prepared to serve and protect our community is critically important in doing their jobs,” said Florissant’s Chief of Police Tim Lowery. “I can’t express how grateful I am to Pepose Vision Institute and 911 Vision Foundation and what this means to my officers and their safety.”

It is the Foundation’s objective to develop a five-year strategic plan to expand its eye care program to additional North County police, fire and EMS first responders. Since its inception, Pepose Vision Institute and the 911 Vision Foundation have provided no-cost vision correction to over 450 first responders in East St. Louis. New Florissant mayor names the next chief of police and major with the police department

Florissant Mayor Timothy J. Lowery felt the importance for the integrity and morale of the Florissant Police Department to identify leadership from within at this time and to make promotions accordingly. He appointed as the next Florissant Police Chief Major Timothy Fagan and promoted as the next Major/Assistant Chief of Police Captain Randy Boden.

Fagan was born and raised in the St. Louis County area. In his last position as major he was responsible for overseeing the operations of the three bureaus the department is divided into, The Bureau of Field Operations, Bureau of Support Services, and Bureau of Investigations.

Fagan began his law enforcement career in 1993

working with both the Village of Bel Nor and the city of Dellwood. In 1994 he began his career with the city of Florissant holding positions as both a patrol officer and in the Special Operations Unit.

Boden was born in St. Louis County and is a graduate of Pattonville High School. Boden began his career in January, 1987 as a police officer with the St. Louis County Police Department. Upon graduation from the St. Louis City Police Academy he was assigned to the Affton Precinct. In August, 1989 he joined the Florissant Police Department. Major Boden has served in many different capacities in the department. Starting in 1989 he was assigned to the Bureau of Field Operations as a patrol officer..

Creve Coeur City Council approves zoning amendments establishing medical marijuana regulations The Creve Coeur City Council approved an ordinance at its meeting on April 22 amending the city’s zoning ordinance to establish regulations for medical marijuana facilities. This legislation follows the statewide approval of a Constitutional Amendment last November approving the use of marijuana for medical purposes.

The text amendment permits medical marijuana dispensaries in commercial areas, but medical marijuana dispensary facilities may be located no closer than 300 feet from a school.

The text amendment also allows medical marijuana cultivation and manufacturing facilities in research office and light industrial areas with approval of a conditional use permit, however the marijuana cultivation and processing activities are

required to be indoors with systems in place to ensure no odor of marijuana is emitted. Testing facilities for medical marijuana are a permitted use in the light industrial and research office districts.

The Creve Coeur planning staff began drafting proposed regulations for medical marijuana facilities earlier this year and presented a draft ordinance to the Planning and Zoning Commission for review. The city of Creve Coeur held a public hearing on March 4, as well as a public forum on March 7, to provide citizens the opportunity to learn more about the proposed legislation. The Planning and Zoning Commission voted to recommend approval at their meeting on April 1.

By Jim Donahoe Just imagine that you are confined to a hospital bed and going through one of the toughest times of your life, and yet none of your family can visit with you because they cannot afford the cost of a hotel. Until earlier this decade, this situation was not uncommon for many of the veterans treated by the VA here in St Louis.

Most people don’t realize that the VA Medical Center here in St. Louis treats veterans from across the entire Central Midwest. These veterans come here for the high tech medicine offered (e.g. heart surgery, radiation oncology, spinal cord rehabilitation and the list goes on). But now, thanks to a wonderful home located on the Jefferson Barracks VA Medical campus, these veterans (and military members) can have their family members at the bedside for as long as hospitalization is required.

That home is called the St. Louis Fisher House.

Today there are 82 Fisher Houses throughout the country, almost evenly divided between VA and military installations. Fisher Houses are similar to Ronald McDonald Houses, except they are for the families of hospitalized veterans and military members. Families will be provided lodging and food in the Fisher House absolutely free of charge, and they can stay there for as long as the veteran is hospitalized; whether that is measured in days, weeks or months.

The St. Louis Fisher House opened in mid-2010.

And since that time, over 10,000 family members (e.g. spouse, children, siblings, and even caregivers, etc.) have stayed in this house; with a collective savings in food and lodging costs of over $8.5 million. The only criteria for staying here is that the family members: (1). Come from outside of a 50 mile radius of the hospital, and (2).They are directly involved in the care of the patient. Families will work with their assigned VA Social Workers to arrange their stays.

The house itself is beautiful. It offers 20 bedroom suites each with private baths. There are large common areas (i.e. living, dining, family

rooms and a very large, modern kitchen). The VA staff and many volunteers are totally dedicated to making the family’s stay as comfortable as possible. But, the families will work together to comfort and support each other. Often they become lifelong friends.

The house was built and furnished through local and national donations. Once it was ready to open, the Fisher House was “gifted” to the VA to operate. A local Fisher House Board, comprised of non-paid volunteers, continues to raise money for things that the VA is not allowed to purchase (e.g. food, toiletries, paper products, overflow hotel rooms, off-hours transportation between the hospitals, etc.).

Rascals capture first place early in season The defending West Division champion River City Rascals play in the Frontier League with home games at the friendly confines of the CarShield Field in O’Fallon.

The team is officially in first place as of this article; however, the second, third, fourth and fifth place teams are only one half game behind in the standings. The Rascals have won six games out of the 10 played and the rest of the league has only won five…. it’s early in the season.

Second baseman #16 Trevor Achenbach is leading the attack with a .385 average ranking him fourth in the league and has cranked two home runs this young season that puts him in second place.

Kameron Esthay playing left field has also collected two round trippers along with a league tie of doubles with six that puts him on top of the leader board with 14 runs batted in.

On the mound Dalton Roach has pitched in two games with a total of nine innings tossed. He has registered one win and racked up six strikeouts and has not allowed a run therefore has a 0.00 earned run average.

The Rascals have a team batting average of .274 ahead of the second place club by .027.

An All-GLVC selection and the league’s Freshman of the Year, Sylven owns a team-best scoring average of 71.79 and has recorded six top-five finishes with nine in the top 10 while placing among the top 25 in 11 of 12 tournaments. He has earned medalist honors at the Midwest Regional at Fox Run and at the Newberry Invitational. Sylven is coming off a tie for second at the NCAA D2 Midwest/Central Regional last week.

Putting healthy meals on the table continues to be a yearround goal for many families, one that can become more difficult with the satisfying and savory flavors of comfort-food season.

While seeking healthier options for day-to-day meal planning, it’s important to start your decision-making at the grocery store.

Look for items like all-natural Pure Farmland Bacon, made from pork raised without antibiotics. In addition, it contains no artificial ingredients, preservatives, MSG or added hormones, so you can feel good about incorporating a family favorite like bacon into any meal of the day.

Ingredients:

1 cup flour

¼ teaspoon salt

1½ Tbs cocoa powder

1 large banana, sliced

2 eggs

2 cups vanilla Greek yogurt

1½ cups low-fat chocolate milk

Peanut butter drizzle, optional

½ cup water

Chocolate shavings, optional

Directions: Whisk together flour, cocoa powder, and eggs in a large mixing bowl. Add chocolate milk and water, stirring to combine. Mix in salt and beat until smooth.

Heat a lightly oiled pan over medium-high heat. Pour ¼-cup batter onto pan. Tilt pan with a circular motion so batter coats the surface evenly.

Cook crepe until bottom is light brown and bubbles cover the top of the crepe – about 1 to 2 minutes. Loosen with a spatula, turn and cook the other side.

Serve hot, filled with yogurt, and bananas. Top with peanut butter drizzle and chocolate shavings.

Tim Conway always kept them laughing…and more!

Born and raised in South St. Louis, Steve Bryan is now based in Anaheim, California, and has been allowed access to movie and television sets to see actors and directors at work. Though his writing has taken him far from St. Louis, Steve is, at heart, still the same wide-eyed kid who spent countless hours watching classic movies at neighborhood theaters.

ike the legendary Don Knotts, Tim Conway had a true gift for comedy. The multi-talented performer passed away on May 14, leaving behind a legacy of movies, supporting roles and other comedic contributions. During his 85 years, Conway knew how to make people laugh and keep them laughing with his talents.

Those who aren’t familiar with his work can see him in glorious black-and-white on “McHale’s Navy,” a military comedy set during World War II. Conway played Charles Parker, an ensign on PT-73, a patrol torpedo boat. He starred opposite Ernest Borgnine and, in interviews, Conway spoke highly of his co-star. “McHale’s Navy” can be seen on MeTV, a free digital channel that’s available on KNLC 24.1 in St. Louis.

Arguably, Conway did some of his finest work as a guest star and series regular on “The Carol Burnett Show.” The comedian created memorable characters, most notably “Mr. Tudball,” an executive whose secretary was Mrs. Wiggins (Burnett). Conway’s accent for the character sounded Swedish but he confirmed it was in fact Romanian. In the sketches, Mrs. Wiggins typically misunderstand his instructions and led to disaster for Mr. Tudball.

played a new dental school graduate who only achieved “C” grades in his classes.

Harvey Korman was a patient who came in on a Sunday with a bad toothache. The bumbling novice caused more pain for his patient and his antics reportedly caused

Mr. Korman to wet himself. “The Dentist” is available to view on YouTube and “The Carol Burnett Show” reruns can be seen on MeTV. In the years before the Marvel Cinematic Universe, the Walt Disney Studios released many family-friendly comedies such as “The Love Bug” and “The Computer Wore Tennis Shoes.” Tim Conway was pretty much a Disney regular and appeared in films like “The World’s Greatest Athlete” opposite Jan-Michael Vincent. Conway was Milo Jackson, an assistant college coach who travels with his boss to Africa to find a legendary athlete played by Vincent.

“The Apple Dumpling Gang” featured both Conway and Don Knotts as bumbling bank robbers. Once members of a gang, the two would-be crooks do more harm to themselves than anyone else. The two comedy talents reunited a few years later in “The Apple Dumpling Gang Rides Again.” Their characters, Amos and Theodore, have gone straight but are now suspected of bank robbery.

In times like these, laughter is truly the best medicine, so it’s hard to lose someone as genuinely funny as Tim Conway. May he rest in peace after all the years of fun and laughter he gave us.

n case you didn’t know, we celebrated Lost Sock Day on May 9.

This gave us the occasion to mourn every sock that has ever passed into that mysterious black hole of missing laundry. This is also the day we should throw out the singles in our laundry basket of lone stockings that we’ve held onto for years.

May 10 should then be deemed, Found Sock Day to celebrate when every match to those singles we’ve discarded just as mysteriously turns up.

Laundry is a strange thing.

Take a stroll down the detergent aisle one day and you will see a strange phenomenon: an array of ladies opening up jugs of liquid washing compounds to breathe in huge huffs of fragrance like bibbers at the annual wine-tasting festival.

Edna: “Phyllis, come take a whiff of this one and tell me what you think.”

Phyllis takes the bottle from Edna and pours a small quantity into the detergent’s cap. She swizzles it around a time or two then holds it beneath her nostrils and takes a swift snort.

“Oh yes. That’s an interesting one. A very fruity bouquet. I detect notes of ambrosia with an undertone of oak. There’s definitely a preponderance of oxi-enzymes and powerful stain fighters in this one as well. It’s definitely got backbone.”

Edna: “Great. Now how about this one?”

Another capful is positioned under Phyllis’ nose holes. She breathes in deeply then gags.

“Ack! Nope! No good! That leaves a sharp edge on my sinuses. I can tell there’s an abundance of phosphates. All the cheap synthetic lavender perfume in the world can’t mask the elements of dead

Archeological Humorist: someone who unearths absurdity and hilarity in strange and unusual places including public restrooms, the lint filter, and church meetings.
