Community Action Agency of St. Louis County has opened its doors in North County for service of low-income people in need

By Charlotte Beard Many people may be unaware of some of the community resources that have served St. Louis for more than 50 years in providing programs and services for low-income people in need. Those services include, but are not limited to: home weatherization, youth education services, health and nutrition education, housing counseling, financial education and energy assistance.

One such resource opened its doors for service March 11 and had its official open house May 14 in North County. Community Action Agency of St. Louis County, Inc. (CAASTLC) located at 26B North Oaks Plaza in Northwoods, is now one of 19 CAASTLC locations in the state.

The new CAASTLC location welcomed visitors from the community as they celebrated with a small ceremony and ribbon cutting. In addition, a Barnes-Jewish Hospital mammogram van was present to offer exams on-site. Cenia D. Bosman, President

and CEO of the agency, gave the welcoming speech, and words were shared by Sheila Pearson, Board Chair. Northwoods Mayor, Everett Thomas was also in attendance and shared remarks in support of the agency’s presence in the community.

“The organization itself, Community Action Agencies (CAAs), is about 55 years old and CAASTLC is 50 years old,” states Bosman. “We do have a Community Action in the city as well as Jefferson-Franklin and in St. Charles, but our jurisdiction is St. Louis County.”

CAASTLC is part of the national network of more than 1,000 federally funded CAAs that fulfill the goals of the Community Action Program (CAP). CAP was established as a result of the Economic Opportunity Act of 1964.

People who seek assistance through CAASTLC must be found eligible according to the federal poverty guidelines as it re-

“People can come to our offices and apply,” shared Bosman. “We have a case management approach that allows people to come in and get the information.”

To help further CAASTLC’s mission to open “Doors of Opportunity,” the agency is planning a fundraising event for Oct. 10 at Orlando’s Restaurant in Maryland Heights.

Hazelwood Community Enrichment Commission hosts ‘Community Art Fair’ to support local artists

To promote the creative talents of artists in the St. Louis area, the Hazelwood Community Enrichment Commission will be hosting its 16th Annual Community Art Fair on Saturday, June 1. The event will be held at the Hazelwood Community Center, located at 1186 Teson Road in White Birch Park, from 10 a.m. to 2 p.m.

Local artists, age 16 and over, are urged to enter paintings and drawings they’ve done in oil, watercolor, acrylic, charcoal, pastels, pencil or mixed media. No sculptures, photos or computer generated items accepted.

Participants can enter up to six pieces of art. Each art piece must be displayed on an easel and be appropriate for public viewing. Artists are asked to bring any easels they can along to the show, especially if they are showing a piece that requires a larger easel. They may sell their art pieces if the opportunity arises.

All entries will be professionally judged in four categories: Landscape/Still Life; Real Life; Fantasy/Science Fiction and Abstract/ Non-Objective. Cash prizes will be awarded to the top finishers in each category. Free admission offered to the public to view artwork

Zac Brown Band rocks the Hollywood Casino Amphitheater Just when you think you’ve seen it all.

The Zac Brown Band show took place April 26 at the Hollywood Casino Amphitheater. The show drew me in by the opening act, a personal favorite, Lukas Nelson - and they delivered, though this audience still hadn’t discovered them for the most part. Lukas Nelson and the Promise of the Real is fronted by Lukas Nelson a triple threat singer song-writer guitar slinger, whose first experience was playing with his legendary father, Willie Nelson.

The fact that he grew up with so many great musical influences is very apparent in his work. This band, whose name was inspired by a line from a Neil Young song, were thrilled to be selected to be Neil Young’s touring band over the last couple years, while also recording a few albums together.

I always say, that when you add a cover

to your set, you create a link for those unfamiliar with your music - Lukas covered Paul Simon’s - Diamonds in the Souls of Her Shoes, while The Zac Brown (Extravangza) covered Charlie Daniels, Simon & Garfunkel, James Taylor, Def Leppard and my feet left the ground when together they performed the Allman Brother’s “Whipping Post,” while also delivering a full show of their original material.

I sort of knew that Zac Brown was kind of a big deal, (Billboard named, “Uncaged” as the Best Country Album of 2012, also winning CMT Music Awards, ACM Awards, and a Grammy Award for Best New Artist in 2010) but I still didn’t know why. Now I know. This is what it looks like when you decide it is about the fans. Anyone, with any music preference would have enjoyed this Photo by Scott Shy show! Florissant Police Department announces promotions

There were three recent promotions within the Florissant Police Department. These promotions were necessary after the recent appointment of Tim Fagan to Chief of Police.

Lieutenant Dennis Dehart was promoted to the rank of Captain, Detective Sergeant Mark Pounders was promoted to the rank of Lieutenant and Detective Joseph Monahan was promoted to the rank of Sergeant.

Dehart will remain Commander of the Bureau of Investigations. Dehart joined the Florissant Police Department on Dec. 4, 2000. Pounders was assigned as one of the supervisors in the Bureau of Investigations as a Detective Sergeant and will now be assigned to the Bureau of Field

Operations. Pounders joined the Florissant Police Department on Dec. 13, 2005. Monahan was assigned to the Bureau of Investigations as a Detective and will remain in the Bureau of Investigations as one of the supervisors having the role as Detective Sergeant. Monahan joined the Florissant Police Department on May 31, 2010.

“I would just like to express my sincere congratulations to these three men. These men have outstanding leadership qualities and professional skills that will contribute to the continued success of our award winning police department in keeping our citizens and their property safe,” adds Florissant Mayor Tim Lowery.

State ‘Click It Or Ticket’ campaign continues through June 2 As an integral part of this year’s national ‘Click It or Ticket’ seat belt campaign, which takes place through June 2, the Hazelwood Police Department will be teaming up with law enforcement nationwide.

According to NHTSA, there were 10,076 unbuckPhoto courtesy Hazelwood Police Department led passenger vehicle occupants killed in U.S. crashes in 2017. In that same year, 55 percent of passenger vehicle occupants killed at night (6 p.m. to 5:59 a.m.) were not wearing their seat belts. That’s why one focus of the Click It or Ticket campaign is night-time enforcement.

Hazelwood Police Chief Gregg Hall said, “With an increased number of cars flooding the streets due to the Memorial Day holiday, it’s imperative we get the word out about the importance of seat belt safety.”

“If the enforcement crackdown wakes up people to the dangers of unrestrained driving, we’ll consider our mission a success,” said Hall. “If you know a friend or a family member who doesn’t buckle up when they drive, please ask them to consider changing their habits. Help us spread this lifesaving message before someone you know is killed because of not wearing a seat belt. Seat belts save lives, and everyone – front seat and back, child and adult – needs to remember to buckle up – every trip, every time.”

The Eighth Annual Florissant Resident Document Shredding Day was held on April 27 in front of the Health Department. All information was destroyed upon delivery in a manner to which it cannot be recognized or recreated. All paper will then be recycled.

It was estimated that over 25,700 pounds of paper was shredded and Meridian Waste Services collected and recycled 200 pounds of cardboard.

Cintas Document Management Company shredded the information and Meridian Waste Services donated the cardboard recycles dumpsters.

Hazelwood offers free admission for movies under the stars at city parks Gather the family or bring a date to the “Friday Night Flicks” offered by the Hazelwood Parks & Recreation Division. Watch a favorite movie under the stars in a city park or at a sports venue. Admission is free and open to the public. But donations to help offset the costs will be appreciated.

Bring lawn chairs, blankets, snacks and refreshments. Glass containers, however, are prohibited.

Concessions will be available at the Sports Complex on July 26.

The movies will start at dusk when its dark enough to see the screen. In the event of bad weather, the movies will be shown at either Civic Center East (CCE) or the Hazelwood Community Center (HCC).

Bryan Wood was determined when he dove headfirst into a crowded tree service market well over a decade ago.

“It was just me and another guy and a truck and a trailer,” Wood said. “We went around passing out fliers, hoping the phone rings. It took several years to get where we’re at.”

Woody’s Tree Service is a local, family business with 15-plus years of experience servicing St. Louis and St. Charles Counties.

Hepatitis C is a viral infection that attacks the liver causing inflammation. Left untreated, it can lead to liver disease, liver cancer and death.

Life Outside Festival set for June 8 Great Rivers Greenway invites people from across the region to the 4th Annual Life Outside Free Festival of the Outdoors. The event will be held June 8 from 10 a.m. to 4 p.m. at Creve Coeur Lake Memorial Park in Maryland Heights.

Unique from other regional festivals, Life Outside is exclusively about engaging event-goers with new outdoor experiences. Partner organizations from across the region will be at the event, offering attendees the opportunity to see, try and learn about a variety of outdoor activities in a free, fun and supportive environment. Activities will include outdoor experiences related to active living, camping, climbing, cycling, mind and body, nature and conservation, paddling and running.

“Life Outside is a chance for people of all ages, abilities and interests to discover how they can live more of their lives outside. People can come try activities like kayaking, mountain biking or yoga and learn firsthand if this is something they want to make part of their lives,” said Elizabeth Simons, community program manager for Great Rivers Greenway. “Whether people already have something they have been thinking about trying, or just want to see what’s new in the outdoor scene, Life Outside will have something for everyone.”

Launched in 2016, the Life Outside Festival has grown each year, drawing new and repeat attendees from throughout the St. Louis region. Attendees can participate in a variety of free activities, including: classes, product demos, hands-on experiences and competitions. Based on partner interest and community feedback, Great Rivers Greenway expects the 2019 festival

to be the largest one yet, attracting close to 75 partner organizations and an estimated 5,000 people from across the region.

“I loved being able to try out new things that I’ve always wanted to try, but never knew how to get started or who to talk to,” said a 2018 festival attendee. “I also liked learning about organizations and activities that I didn’t even know existed.”

A wide selection of popular area food trucks will be at the festival with food and beverages available for purchase and 18 musical acts will be performing at multiple stages throughout the festival grounds.

Drinking water in reusable bottles and sunscreen will also be available for free.

To ensure greater access to the event, the Life Outside Festival will offer free roundtrip shuttles from the North Hanley, Civic Center and Shrewsbury MetroLink Stations. Attendees can also park and ride free shuttles from the Zumbehl Commuter Lot in St. Charles County (adjacent to the intersection of Veterans Memorial Parkway and Zumbehl Road) and Pattonville High School at 2497 Creve Coeur Mill Rd. in Maryland Heights.

By Christie Derbin Exercise seems to help just about everything, and multiple sclerosis (MS) is no exception. Studies have confirmed the many benefits of exercise for those living with MS, including better cardiovascular fitness, improved strength, better bladder and bowel function, less fatigue and depression, a more positive attitude and increased participation in social activities.

One local man living with MS, Rick Evans, has the seen the benefits first-hand. Rick is an avid runner and walker. He’s also been living with MS since 1997. This June, he’ll participate in Challenge Walk MS: St. Louis for his 17th time. Challenge Walk is a two-day, 50k walking event that brings together some of the most dedicated family members, friends and strangers to walk 50k closer to a cure for MS. This special Challenge Walk “family” vows to put one foot in front of the other on behalf of those who can’t . . . until they can.

Rick and his twin brother, Kenny, formed a team for Challenge Walk – the “E Team” and have participated in the event every year since 2003. Rick even ran the entire length of the event, plus some, to reach a total of 78 miles in 2016 – extra steps he was determined to take in recognition of having lived with MS for 20 years.

“Challenge Walk MS has been an extremely important part of my life since being diagnosed with the disease,” Evans said. “The training I do for this walk has enabled me to live with the symptoms I

have from this disease and has saved me from having the fatigue that many people with MS experience. The wonderful connections I’ve made from doing the walk over the past 17 years have been uplifting, inspiring and educational. As a competitive individual, this walk has allowed me to keep doing what I love, and I can proudly say I have completed 17 half-marathons since my diagnosis.”

Challenge Walk MS: St. Louis will take place June 1-2, covering more than 31 miles in the city of St. Louis. Options are available to walk one or both days, as well as participate virtually or as a volunteer. Circus Harmony to receive $14,000 grant from the National Endowment for the Arts National Endowment for the Arts Acting Chairman Mary Anne Carter has approved more than $80 million in grants as part of the Arts Endowment’s second major funding announcement for fiscal year 2019. Included in this announcement is an Art Works grant of $14,000 to Circus Harmony for Circus Harmony in the Parks. Art Works is the Arts Endowment’s principal grantmaking program. The agency received 1,592 Art Works applications for this round of grantmaking and will award 977 grants in this category.

“These awards, reaching every corner of the United States, are a testament to the artistic richness and diversity in our country,” said Mary Anne Carter, acting chairman of the National Endowment for the Arts. “Organizations such as Circus Harmony are giving people in their community the opportunity to learn, create, and be inspired.”

This generous NEA grant leverages the $5,000 in support of this program that was awarded from the Saigh Foundation so even more children can learn to defy gravity, soar with confidence and leap over social barriers, all at the same time. Circus Harmony in the Parks shows are being scheduled for this coming summer and fall.

Ameren Missouri has filed tariff sheets with the Missouri Public Service Commission (PSC) that would increase the company's gas service revenues by approximately $4.3 million. In its filing before the PSC, Ameren Missouri has stated that the main drivers of the rate request include costs associated with infrastructure upgrades and enacting the federal tax legislation of 2018.

The overall request would raise a typical residential customer's bill by approximately 3.8%, translating to just more than approximately $2.05 monthly increase. The permanent rate increase request, which is subject to regulatory approval, would take effect no later than November 2019.

Ameren Missouri's rate filing also includes a request to standardize the Purchase Gas Adjustment charge among all Ameren Missouri gas customers.

River City Rascals have many contributing to success The defending West Division champion River City Rascals play in the Frontier League with home games at the friendly confines of the CarShield Field in O’Fallon.

So far this young season the club has jelled together for manager Steve Brook and bench coaches Alex Ferguson, Roy Freeman and Josh Ludy.

Prediger, a three-time All-GLVC performer, posted a singles record of 22-6 and was ranked as high as No. 36 during the spring season. She was also 18-7 in doubles with a ranking as high as No. 17 with sophomore Leticia Lunge at No. 1.

Prediger is an international business major.

To be eligible for nomination to the Google Cloud CoSIDA Academic All-District Team, student-athletes must be at least a sophomore in academic standing with at least a 3.30 cumulative GPA, and must be a starter or an important reserve. Pre-

Ingredients: 3/4 cup green lentils, uncooked 2 1/2 cups water 2 tablespoons minced shallot 1 1/2 cups halved red California grapes 1/4 cup fresh chopped dill 1/4 cup chopped walnuts 2 tablespoons lemon juice 1 teaspoon lemon zest 1 tablespoon white balsamic vinegar

Directions: In medium saucepan, combine lentils with water.

Bring to boil then reduce heat to simmer; cover and cook 15 minutes. Turn off heat and allow lentils to steam 5 minutes; drain and let cool.

Heat oven to broil. Move rack to highest position.

In medium bowl, combine lentils, shallot, grapes, dill, walnuts, lemon juice, lemon zest, vinegar, 1 tablespoon olive oil, arugula, 1/4 teaspoon salt, and pepper, to taste; set aside.

Sprinkle trout fillets with lemon zest, remaining salt and 1/4 teaspoon pepper; brush with remaining olive oil. Broil trout 4-5 minutes. Serve with lentil salad.

‘The Phantom Menace’ turns 20

Born and raised in South St. Louis, Steve Bryan is now based in Anaheim, California, and has been allowed access to movie and television sets to see actors and directors at work. Though his writing has taken him far from St. Louis, Steve is, at heart, still the same wide-eyed kid who spent countless hours watching classic movies at neighborhood theaters.

n 1983, as I was heading into my last year of college, “Star Wars: Return of the Jedi” arrived in theaters. At the time, George Lucas was releasing one new episode every three years. Wrapping up what was planned to be the middle trilogy in a series of nine films was a big deal in that pre-social media era.

Episode 6 clarified Luke’s heritage and finally gave Darth Vader/ Anakin Skywalker some redemption and peace.

Lucas’ original timetable didn’t quite work out as planned because “The Phantom Menace,” officially the “first film” in the “Star Wars” saga, didn’t arrive until 1999. Prior to that, Lucas had released “Special Editions” of Episodes 4, 5, 6 that took advantage of recent technological advances. These remastered editions got fans into theaters and made them hungrier for the new stuff.

In the eyes of many fans, “The Phantom Menace” was somewhat disappointing. Jake Lloyd played Anakin Skywalker as a young boy on Tatooine. Anakin and his mother were slaves and Anakin, a mechanical wizard, was also a skilled pod racer. The Jedi Master Qui-Gon Jinn (Liam Neeson) recognized Anakin’s connection to the Force and wanted him to train as a Jedi.

Episode 1 offered insights into the Star Wars Universe and set the foundation for the third trilogy, which is set to conclude this year. Yet, there are moments when die-hard fans had to be thinking “What the heck?” especially when it came to Jar-Jar Binks, a new character that reportedly was inspired by Disney’s Goofy.

Computer-generated and intended as comic relief, Jar-Jar rubbed fans the wrong way, especially when he spoke. The character redeemed himself by the end of the film and even became a galactic politician, but his role was greatly reduced in the next two films.

Fans created “The Phantom Edit,” a new cut of the film that removed almost all of Jar-Jar. Some of my colleagues thought this version made much more sense than the theatrical release.

“The Phantom Menace” also introduced the concept of midichlorians, microscopic organisms within all living creatures. Qui-Jon tested Anakin’s midichlorian level and it showed his high Force sensitivity. There is a biological aspect to becoming a Jedi, but someone with that much connection to the Force could become a great hero…or an even greater threat.

It’s appropriate that “Star Wars: The Rise of Skywalker” will arrive in theaters 20 years after Episode 1. “The Phantom Menace” gave us the backstory of Luke and his family while Episode 9 closes out a storyline that began a long time ago in a galaxy far, far away.

‘Yeggs’ is a comic series about Robert and Bill, two rabbits who have opened their own egg franchise in the Midwest (St. Louis area). We follow their day to day lives, watching as they go about the hectic task of preparing for their one big day every year. Along the way they have adventures filled with fun, comic doings and pathos.

Airing my dirty laundry Hygiene has changed quite a bit from olden times. Back in the dirty days, the French would wear wigs to cover up their sickly balding heads.

To freshen them up in between, they’d dust the hair pieces with a goodly dose of powder. I’m guessing it was flea powder.

Also, the ladyfolk would pin bouquets of flowers to their collars to bring about a fresh smell. After which someone would remark, “Oh indeed how pleasant. That small bouquet of decaying daisies pinned to your lapel hides all trace of you not having scrubbed your body parts in a dozen fortnights. Truly refreshing!”

The more well-to-do would douse their pungent regions with a splash of eau de toilet water to rejuvenate those areas. The thoughts of splashing on something named after a toilet to improve one’s scent gives us a tragic glimpse into how truly odorous they must have smelled.

The French weren’t the only ones to confront the consequences of bad hygiene. Our early settlers faced their own battles with body odor.

They would then take their grungy clothes down to the riverside and beat them against a rock only to see them float downstream after being chased away by a ravenous grizzly.

They then had to dress in their only remaining smelly outfit for weeks on end, without the luxury of deodorant. More disturbing, men would have to wear their underpants for weeks then give them a vigorous shake in the wind and turn them inside out for the remainder of the month. If desperation hit, they would have to twist them sideways to get a few more days use until laundry day hit.

When finally faced with the grim task of scrubbing these underthings, the lady of the house would hoist them up on the end of a long tree branch and pretend to head down to the river’s edge. Midpoint, she would stop and bury them beneath a log next to the fire pit to be used later as a handy ignitable flame starter.

I’m so glad I live in the modern world. Unfortunately, my laundry always sits in four stages: Dirty in the hamper; spun and wet still in the drum; wrinkled in a ball in the dryer.

Thankfully I have stage four to rely on to make sure I have something to wear – Kohl’s.
