By Charlotte Beard This is the season for seeing an increase in garage sales with signs and flying balloons to point the way for traffic or a passerby.

However, there might be few garage sales, if any, that are fondly thought to be seen from outer space. For the 13th year, St. Rose Philippine Duchesne in Florissant will be hosting its annual garage sale with a purpose at its school located at 3500 St. Catherine Street. The Huge Garage Sale event will take place June 15 and June 16. “[Throughout] the year a lot of people in our parish and other parishes know that they can get rid of good quality things in their house by having us pick them up,” shared Father Tom Wyrsch. “We have a certain amount of storage room. One year we rented an extra storage pod. The garage sale covers an entire high school campus.

Our school [consists] of about nine buildings on 3500 St. Catherine Street. The garage sale extends all through those nine buildings. I call it the garage sale that can be seen from space. There is everything from exercise machines, sporting goods, electronics, clothes, a vast [number] of toys, dishes, and a large amount of large furniture. [We have] dining room tables and chairs, beautiful living room, dining room, and bedroom furniture.”

Certain items at the annual event are expected to go very quickly. For those who wish to pay $10, there is an early bird admission on June 15 from 1 p.m – 3 p.m.

Doors are open to attendees for free 3 – 8 p.m. and Saturday, 8 a.m. – 1 p.m. Wyrsch shared an additional opportunity for the following weekend.

“A week later, Saturday, June 23 everything is half priced from 8 a.m. – 1 p.m. There are a lot of holiday decorations.

I get more Halloween decorations every year. There are a lot of Christmas decorations. [There is] a jewelry room, bikes, outdoor furniture – the outdoor furniture goes quick. That’s a thing that people come and pay early-bird for.”

The idea for this event originated with another parish prior to St. Rose’s inception in 2005. Since that time St. Rose has taken the reigns of hosting the event which Wyrsch shares has grown over the years. Last year the sale raised more than $25,000. The funds go towards the general usage of the parish.”

“Some of it goes towards the school,” shared Wyrsch. “We have a lot of buildings to maintain. There’s not any one cause.

It is our largest fundraiser of the year. It brings in more funds than anything else.”

Wyrsch shared what he believes to be the benefit in St. Rose hosting this annual garage sale.

“The first benefit is that yes, it’s a fundraiser for the parish.

The second benefit is that we believe we are helping the environment because it recycles goods instead of people having to have all new things all the time. These are quality goods – all the furniture, all the toys, all the clothing. Third, it does provide very inexpensive goods for our neighbors. We get a lot of people throughout the neighborhood coming. [Some] drive in from a [other] places [such as] Illinois. So, we feel in all three ways it’s a benefit. It is kind of a ministry. I believe very much in helping the environment by recycling good things. It gives a lot of people [an opportunity] to buy inexpensive, very highquality things.”

Though the parish has already begun collecting items for the sale, anyone still wanting to rid their homes of quality items can drop items off at the school June 2 through June 9. Drop-off hours vary depending on the day of the week. Those interested are advised to check the website for the exact times: www.

The event would not be possible without their core of approximately 60 volunteers. However, the full scope of the event requires a lot more help. Theresa Brandt, who has been involved with the event for approximately 10 years and is currently working with a team to organize the event, shared that the entire event takes a lot of man hours. She shared that from the planning phase to completion an estimated 4,500 volunteer hours combined is used.

“The week before the sale what they need are people to sort out all the goods,” shared Wyrsch. “There is a tremendous volume of goods. On the day of the sale [we need] people to just walk around and help people make their purchase.”

Wyrsch went on to share an incentive for the parents of students who attend the school.

“We give a break to our [student] tuition if the [parent] does some of the volunteering at this [event]. Last year we had 800 parent volunteer hours.”

By Maida J. Coleman For many, summer means more family cookouts, a break from school and the plunge into outdoor activities. In Missouri, warmer temperatures also mean a heightened risk for weather-related emergencies. Although we may not be able to restrain Mother Nature’s wrath, we can take steps to prepare for the stormy side of the summer season.

Missouri’s Storm Aware website, located at https://stormaware.mo.gov/, offers resources for emergency planning related to tornadoes, severe storms and flooding.

This website can provide you and your family with the information you need to protect yourselves before a weather-related emergency occurs. Weather emergency preparedness helps ensure that you and your family know what to do, when to do it, where to go and are armed with the items needed to keep you safe before, during and after severe weather occurs.

Ready.gov (located at https://www. ready.gov/be-informed) also provides essential information to assist in preparing for weather related emergencies. This website also describes the various emergency alerts available and which devices are needed to receive the different types of alerts. These alerts can keep you and your family informed about emergencies that may impact your area.

The most important thing you can do to prepare for weather-related emergencies is develop a plan for weather-related emergencies before they occur. Key steps

for weather related emergency planning include: 1. Utilizing resources to develop an emergency-preparedness plan. Ready. gov has a document that you can use as a guide to create your own emergency plan.

2. Ensuring that everyone in your family is familiar with the plan. You may not have much time to prepare or all of your family may not be together when the weather event occurs so it is crucial to make sure everyone knows what they are supposed to do in the event of severe weather. It is also important to have a plan for meeting up or communicating in the event that the family is separated or phone service is unavailable.

3. Gathering your emergency preparation supplies. For example, you should include water and canned or dried food, a manual can opener, prescription medications, first-aid kit, flashlights, battery powered radio, extra batteries and special supplies for infants and/or pets in your emergency kit. You should also store important documents in a fire and water proof safe.

4. Preparing your home for weather related disasters. Inspect your home for vulnerabilities (i.e. unsecured items that could become flying debris causing harm or damage) and mitigate

those risks where possible.

5. Review this plan with your loved ones often and check your emergency preparedness supplies frequently to replace, dispose of, or add items as needed.

Developing an emergency plan now will allow you and your family to spend more time doing what’s really important this summer – enjoying your time with each other.

Commissioner Maida Coleman was appointed to the Missouri Public Service Commission by Governor Jay Nixon, effective Aug.10, 2015.

She was unanimously confirmed by the Missouri State Senate on Jan. 21. Prior to her appointment, Commissioner Coleman was the Director of the Office of Community Engagement. From 2001 until 2009, Commissioner Coleman served first as a State Representative and then as State Senator from St. Louis, becoming the first African-American woman in state history to serve as Senate Minority Leader. Coleman has a B.A. in Journalism from Lincoln University in Jefferson City and was awarded a Doctor of Humane Letters Degree from Harris-Stowe State University in St. Louis in 2008. A native of Sikeston, Missouri, Coleman lives in St. Louis.

Students experience tree climbing and planting at 24:1 Arbor Day Celebration Thirty-five eighth-graders recently had a chance to touch the sky, in a figurative sense at least, and came down to earth with greater appreciation of trees, thanks to the Tree City USA program.

Tree City USA is a recognition and certification program of the National Arbor Day Foundation for municipalities who meet designated tree care standards in their communities. The Missouri Department of Conservation (MDC) administers the program for the Show-Me-State.

Companion programs Tree Line USA and Tree Campus USA recognize similar efforts by utility companies and university campuses, respectively.

The eighth-graders were from the Normandy School District Seventh Eighth Grade Center in North St. Louis County.

They immersed themselves in the 24:1 Arbor Day Celebration on April 18 at St. Louis County’s St. Vincent Park, put on by 15 Tree City USA-certified communities in the 24:1 Collaborative. The collaborative was formed by the nonprofit organization Beyond Housing to serve the 24 communities of the Normandy School District.

“We celebrated trees,” said Doug Seely, Community Forester for Beyond Housing.

One of the requirements to achieve and maintain Tree City USA certification is to hold an annual Arbor Day Celebration during April. “So being the 24:1, and having smaller communities, we came together and had one big Arbor Day celebration,” Seely said.

“We want to spread the good news and benefits of trees and improve the community forest in the 24:1.”

Staff members from MDC’s Forestry Division were among those who assisted in putting on the event.

During the celebration the students got to sample activities like tree planting and removing invasive bush honeysuckle. The highlight of the day was getting to climb trees like professional arborists. The company Vertical Voyages outfitted the kids with proper climbing gear, including ropes, harnesses, saddles and safety helmets.

After a safety orientation, the students got to ascend trees for a birds-eye view of the park.

“It’s fun, I want to go again, I want to go on a higher one!” exclaimed eighth-grader Aniya, who made it all the way to the top. “When I looked down it just amazed me how high I was,” she said.

Fellow student Kenneth said the tree climbing was his favorite too, but he also enjoyed planting trees and would like to do that more. “It gives me

more experience when I help my grandparents to plant their trees,” he said.

Makhia learned all about bush honeysuckle.

“Honeysuckle is not supposed to be here, so it’s killing all the native plants and all the native foods that the animals eat, so we have to cut it down,” said the eighth-grader. She also added that it was the most “nature work” she’d ever done.

Tree City USA has proven to be a successful program. It enables municipalities to provide their citizens with healthier, greener communities, along with building awareness for the benefits of trees. In Missouri the program broke 100 this year, with a total of 104 municipalities certified.

51 of those communities are in MDC’s St. Louis region.

“We have towns as small as Glen Echo Park with 130-or-so residents, all the way up to St. Louis, Kansas City and Springfield,” said MDC St. Louis Community Forester Danny Moncheski.

Seely said he hopes the hands-on experiences these Normandy School District eighth-graders had during the 24:1 celebration can help move the spirit of Tree City USA into the future.

“I hope they learned a lot and that it sticks with them. If nothing else I think they gained a new respect for the outdoors and trees. That was one of the main goals,” Seely said.

MDC joins multiple partners to restore natural habitat to St. Louis City’s O’Fallon Park

City of Florissant promotes street to superintendent of park maintenance

Visitors to St. Louis City’s O’Fallon Park may be seeing some changes soon, including some that will make the busy city park a more natural place to be.

The Missouri Department of Conservation (MDC) recently entered a partnership to restore natural habitat to O’Fallon Park through MDC’s Back to Nature St. Louis Grant. This grant provides funding for habitat restoration and/ or reconstruction on a public park property in St. Louis County or City through a competitive application process.

The grant opportunity is offered every three years and selected recipients can obtain up to $75,000, distributed over a three-year period. As part of the agreement, recipients are also expected to invest funds and resources into the project on a 75/25 basis. Applicants can meet the 25 percent match requirement through direct funding or inkind contributions to the project.

The result of the agreement is the Back to Nature in O’Fallon Park project. The goal of the project is to revitalize and enhance the park to improve the visitor’s aesthetic experience, facilitate nature enjoyment, and enhance nature programming opportunities.

As the historic park serves as an anchor for northside neighborhoods, several area partners are coming together to cooperate on the project, including the city of St. Louis Parks Department, Brightside St. Louis, North Newstead Association, and the O’Fallon Community Development Organization.

Additional partners include Missouri Botanical Garden, YMCA, Boys and Girls Club and Forest Releaf of Missouri.

Back to Nature St. Louis funds will support the following activities over the next three years:

Street department foreman for the city of Florissant, Kevin Green, has been promoted to superintendent of park maintenance.

Green has been with the city for almost 39 years.

He was hired in October of 1979 as a class “c” laborer in the water department and in 1980 moved to the street department for a short time. After the sale of the water department, Green was promoted to a class “a” foreman in the street department in 2003 where he held that position until he was just recently promoted to superintendent of park maintenance to replace the retiring and long-time city employee Bob Laramie.

Florissant Mayor Thomas Schneider added, “Kevin not only brings his outstanding work ethic and many years of experience but his strong leadership qualities. Kevin leads by example and has always been committed to the city and the community he serves.”

• Two acres of prairie management and expanding prairie area by an additional two acres.

• Offer training workshops for neighborhood volunteers.

• Provide teen employment, career exploration, and job skill development for local students Restoring native habitat is one of MDC’s major goals, to enhance the quality of life for people, and establish important islands of habitat for native plants and wildlife in urban areas.

“Providing opportunities for communities to connect to nature is a priority for MDC,” said MDC Community Conservation Planner Josh Ward. “Restoring and creating these natural environments in urban areas like O’Fallon Park is as much about connecting people with nature, as it is about improving urban wildlife habitat.”

MDC anticipates the initial stage of the project, including removal of invasive plants, to begin later this spring. This is the necessary first step to lead the way for the restoring of natural habitat to the park.

Normandy Read with Me! celebrates literacy in the community Children in the Normandy Schools Collaborative received free books, food and fun at the Fourth Annual Normandy Read with Me! Community Celebration held May 5 at Barack Obama Elementary School.

The Normandy Read with Me! Celebration is part of a community-wide initiative to improve student literacy in the Normandy Schools Collaborative by providing free reading materials throughout the community.

Approximately 700 books were distributed to children in attendance. The 250 parents, students, Normandy staff and community leaders were treated to free food, face painting, book making, door prizes, games, literacy resources for families, and – of course – book giveaways.

Olga Hunt, Normandy science curriculum coordinator, said the goal was to help students start their own home libraries.

“We want reading to be a great experience for students and eventually, this will help them develop a love of reading and improve this necessary skill,” said Olga Hunt, Normandy science curriculum coordinator. “We were so pleased with the turnout and hope the students really enjoy the books they received.”

Other highlights included storytelling with local favorites Kenya Ajanaku, founder and executive director of Harambee Institute, and literacy activities with Julius B. Anthony, founder and president of the St. Louis Black Authors of Children’s Literature Initiative.

This event was made possible with support from Ready Readers, PBSKids, St. Louis County Library, Wyman Center, and Beyond Housing.

Bermuda Elementary in the FergusonFlorissant School District now will have enhanced STEM educational opportunities in the classroom next year thanks to a $2,500 Dannette Ward Science Education Grant from Monsanto’s STEM Education Outreach Program.

Sarah Nash, Monsanto outreach communications specialist, presented Kimberly Berry and Sara Tehan, both teachers at Bermuda, with the grant. The grant will be used to purchase science materials to enhance Bermuda’s newly created outdoor classroom to offer more handson experiences in order to prepare students to be creative thinkers and to eliminate the nature deficit.

The nature deficit, coined by the writer Richard Louv in a 2005 book, “Last Child in the Woods,” is the idea that when children are exposed to more time outdoors, mental health and behavior improves drastically. In addition to the school’s outdoor classroom, they are also planning to add an outdoor community garden.

“The benefits of connecting to nature have been well documented in numerous scientific research studies and publications. Collectively, this body of research shows that children’s social, psychological, academic and physical health is positively impacted when they have daily contact with nature,” said Kimberly Berry, Kindergarten teacher.

Pattonville’s Holman Middle School earns top place in national newspaper competition for third year in a row Holman Middle School, in the Pattonville School District, earned a first place award in the American Scholastic Press Association’s Scholastic Newspaper Awards for 2018.

This is the third consecutive year that the Holman Pirate Times won the national top middle school newspaper award.

Holman achieved a second place award the previous two years, which was the highest score for any middle school in the nation for those years.

“Of course, we have a budget of $0, which makes our winning even more improbable,” stated Glenn Changar, Newspaper Club Sponsor. “We have used the association’s advice each year to improve the writing, editing and style of the Pirate Times.”

The staff of the Pirate Times consists of a dozen 11- through 13-year-olds who devote time after school to producing this newspaper, which is published approximately four times annually.

The newspaper was started in 2014 when Dr. Sarah Moran, Holman Middle School Principal, wanted to offer an after-school activity for students who were not involved in athletics or the Honor Society, but wanted to be a part of something.

“That first year, no newspaper was produced, but it was a great learning experience,” Changar said. “Some amazing students have worked hard to produce this newspaper over the last three years. It is a labor of love! The club is totally inclusive, and no student has ever been turned away. However, once some students realize that writing is involved, they don’t come back,” he said with a smile.

The current Editor-In-Chief, 13-year-old Sofia Boughton of Maryland Heights, has helmed the newspaper for the last two years, but will be moving on to high school next

year, and a new editor-in-chief will be selected.

“Sofia has written the most stories, poems and editorials of anyone in the club,” Changar explained. “And always with a smile and a positive attitude. These kids work together like a family. When one student cannot complete a story, another steps up to make sure it gets done.”

On a beautiful Saturday morning, more than 1,300 individuals registered for the 37th Annual Hazelwood PTA Council Scholarship Run/Walk event. The event took place at Hazelwood Central High School on May 5. The run/walk event was comprised of several categories including a 5K, a one mile run, a color blast, and fun runs for kids of all ages.

“The number of participants who took part in the PTA Run/Walk really speaks volume about the Hazelwood School District’s support for our students and the importance of this scholarship fund,” said Dr. Nettie Collins-Hart, superintendent of Hazelwood School District. (HSD). “Special thanks to the Hazelwood PTA Council and the Hazelwood staff who helped to make this event a tremendous success. I would also like to thank our community partners for providing

valuable resources during the health fair.”

For the first time, the Hazelwood School District served a barbecue lunch for all participants, compliments of their food vendor, Kohl’s.

“I was proud to witness how our students, board, staff and community members came out in support of this event. It was a beautiful day, fantastic event and it appears that everyone had a great time. I certainly enjoyed myself,” Collins-Hart said.

For more than three decades, this family-friendly event, along with other PTA Council fundraisers have raised more than $3.4 million for the Hazelwood PTA Student Scholarship Fund, which benefits deserving Hazelwood graduating seniors. Since the program inception in 1959, Hazelwood PTA Council has granted more than 3,400 scholarships to students.

Former student in Hazelwood and Super Bowl champion coaching high school football Super Bowl champion and former Pittsburgh Steelers player Carey Davis will assume the role of coach of the Hazelwood Central High School football team beginning July 1.

Davis currently serves as a sports analyst on ESPN in St. Louis and a sideline reporter for Learfield sports. He attended Hazelwood Central High School and participated in winning a state championship as a sophomore in 1996. He received a letter jacket in multiple sports during his high school career and due to his success in high school athletics he received an athletic scholarship to play football at the University of Illinois.

Davis worked his way to become a three-year starter who helped lead his team to the first outright Big Ten Championship in nearly 20 years at Illinois. After graduating in May 2003 with a degree in sport management, he fulfilled his dream of playing in the National Football League (NFL), by earning the position of starting fullback with the Pittsburgh Steelers in 2007. In 2009, he proved to be a crucial weapon in the Pittsburgh offense and helped lead the Steelers to a Super Bowl XLIII victory.

Davis’ mission as a coach is to groom young men into champions on and off the field through hard work and integrity.

“It is not only our goal to provide quality teaching in the classroom but teachers and coaches on our athletic fields, and in life lessons” said Dr. Nettie Collins-Hart, superintendent of schools.

The most recent win was a 10-0 shellacking of the Schaumburg Boomers in friendly confines of CarShield Park.

Leading the way offensively was catcher Mike Jurgella who had five times at bat with two singles and doubles and now batting at a .303 clip.

Also, designated hitter Braxton Martinez was part of the fun as he socked two home runs in three times at bat earning six runs batted in.

On the hill, lefty Lucas Laster pitched seven scoreless innings allowing only three hits striking out four. This was his only game pitched this year and naturally has a .000 earned run average.

Closing out the game, reliever Jacob Gangelhoff allowed only one hit in two innings.

Ingredients: 1 can (15 ounces) READ 3 or 4 Bean Salad 1/2 cup halved cherry or grape tomatoes 1 small cucumber (4-5 inches long), cut in half lengthwise then thinly sliced crosswise 2 green onions, thinly sliced 1/2 cup chopped fresh parsley 2 tablespoons chopped fresh mint 1 small clove garlic, minced 1/4 teaspoon crushed red pepper flakes Dressing: 2 tablespoons prepared hummus 1 tablespoon fresh lemon juice 1/4 teaspoon za’atar seasoning blend (or more to taste)

Directions: Drain bean salad. Discard liquid. Place bean salad in large bowl.

Add tomatoes, cucumber, onions, parsley, mint, garlic and red pepper flakes to bean salad. Toss to combine.

To make dressing: Combine hummus, lemon juice and seasoning; set aside.

Add dressing to salad just before serving; toss to combine well.

Serve at room temperature or chilled.

‘Cobra Kai’ kicks the competition

M O V I E

A few weeks ago, I wrote about the first two episodes of “Cobra Kai,” the brilliant 10-part continuation of “The Karate Kid” that previewed in theaters. When the episodes dropped on YouTube Red, I signed up for a free 30-day trial of that mature online channel to watch the rest of the series. Suffice it to say, I – and millions of other viewers – found it to be highly addictive.

The series opens in present day as Johnny Lawrence (William Zabka), the “ex-degenerate” who made life miserable for Daniel LaRusso (Ralph Macchio) in 1984, works at menial jobs. He’s an absentee father who lives in Reseda, drinks Coors Beer and eats pizza from convenience stores. After saving Miguel (Xolo Mariduena) from some parking lot bullies, Lawrence starts a new Cobra Kai dojo and Miguel becomes his first student.

On the flip side, Daniel has his car dealerships, country club membership and a loving family. He even offers Johnny a discount on repairs to his car for old times’ sake. Daniel is on top of the heap but loses his balance after seeing the new Cobra Kai dojo while driving through town.

He’s determined to shut Johnny down, even resorting to tactics that his late mentor, Mr. Miyagi, would find offensive.

The series shows Johnny and Daniel as two sides of the same coin, especially when it comes to karate. Mr. Miyagi’s favorite pupil has let his love of martial arts fade to the point where he uses it in cheesy television commercials. Johnny has been struggling to make a living and his dojo helps him get his life back in order. Each man approaches karate in his own way with different degrees of success.

Karate also influences the new members of the cast. Miguel, once the target of bullies, learns his lessons all too well from Sensei Lawrence. After the young man shows his moves in a cafeteria brawl, Cobra Kai gets

more would-be members at the dojo. Miguel also wins the affections of Samantha (Mary Mouser), Daniel’s daughter who used to train in the family’s dojo years ago.

However, Daniel takes the young man under his wing, becoming a kind mentor to him. “Cobra Kai” already has a green light for Season 2, and deservedly so.

It uses the “crane technique” on the competition while honoring the spirit of Pat Morita, who played the wise Mr. Miyagi. It’s worth some serious binge watching.

Born and raised in South St. Louis, Steve Bryan is now based in Anaheim, California, and has been allowed access to movie and television sets to see actors and directors at work. Though his writing has taken him far from St. Louis, Steve is, at heart, still the same wide-eyed kid who spent countless hours watching classic movies at neighborhood theaters.

n case you’ve been living under a rock lately, crawl on out so you can be tortured like the rest of us. Last week, we were introduced to an interesting…err…annoying couple named, Yanny and Laurel.

These two crazy kids have topped the, “What’s Trending” list, and blown out the internet tubes with their nonsensical names. I swear if I hear those names one more time I’ll stuff pimento into my ear holes!

So while the black dress/blue dress became the viral optical illusion; the Yanny/Laurel has become the viral audio illusion.

You may be asking, “What’s the science behind this Yanny, Laurel thing any who?”

I’ll take it from here.

It’s called an audio illusion; the mind is playing tricks on the ears. Scientists explain it this way: The acoustic information that makes us hear, “Yanny”, is higher frequency than the acoustic information that makes us hear, “Laurel”. The difference is also in the mechanics of the individual ear, meaning, a person might have a pair of sucky ears that don’t hear right.

But that’s all scientific mumbo jumbo. Let me explain the difference in simple, relatable terms.

With an optical illusion, sometimes I’ll go into a bakery and see a big, delicious cheesecake and my eyes will think I can eat half of it without gaining an ounce. But sure enough, the next morning I’ll

look at the scale and see five more pounds on it.

Then I say to myself, “Naw, that’s just an optical illusion,” and I go eat the other half for breakfast.

An audio illusion works like this.

I’ll go into that same bakery and while I consider buying that big, delicious cheesecake, a little devil will appear on my shoulder and say, “YOLO baby! Eat it up!” At the same time, a little angel will plop on my opposite shoulder and softly suggest, “Do you really need an entire cheesecake, Butter Butt?!”

After careful consideration, I will take a hunk of that cheesecake and stuff it into the little angel’s big fat mouth and be amazed at what a nice sound barrier cheesecake makes.

So there you have it. Cheesecake works much better at stifling sound than pimento.
