North County Incorporated has launched its grassroots ‘True North’ campaign to utilize various platforms to feature authentic stories of the communities and people in North County

By Charlotte Beard North County Incorporated (NCI), a regional development association, has announced the launch of its grassroots campaign to collaborate with the community in changing the narrative of living and working in the northern part of the St. Louis metro region. At their annual leadership breakfast on May 10, attendees were informed that the “True North” campaign will utilize various platforms to feature authentic stories of the communities and people in North County.

“This is a multi-channel campaign,” stated NCI President and CEO Rebecca Zoll. “We’re asking people to follow us at #truenorth on Facebook and Twitter. As we advance the campaign, we’re hoping to also be able to produce some PSAs broadcasting platforms.”

NCI has partnered with St. Louis-based marketing agency, Magnetize to develop the campaign. Rebecca Kappel, Partner and Strategy Director for Magnetize shared that in the beginning links to relevant news stories and other business, resident or community highlights will be promoted on True North’s social media accounts. The campaign’s website is truenorthcounty.org.

“Our hope is that once the campaign starts to pick up momentum, we’ll be able to expand into other media channels to broaden the campaign’s reach,” stated Kappel.

At the leadership breakfast, Zoll also addressed attendees with the purpose of NCI’s new initiative.

Kappel adds, “The aim of the campaign is to foster growth and prosperity in North County, encouraging individuals and businesses to ‘find their true north’ within the area’s vibrant landscape of neighborhoods, commerce and tourism.”

Zoll shares that mediums outside the community have not always been the best impact on the perception of North County.

“With the stakeholder groups and engagement meetings, one of the things that we constantly were told and heard was that people felt the community was being shaped by misperception that was being propagated through media that just didn’t have the best understanding of our community, or that the good news and the progress being made in our community and people doing amazing work in our community – those stories weren’t being heard or shared enough through mainstream media. Because that was a message we continued to hear from our stakeholder engagement meetings, it helped the development of the True North campaign. This is an on-going campaign.”

Magnetize’s Kappel shared the ease at which members of the community can be involved in the furtherance of the initiative. Magnetize has built a mechanism into the website for residents and business owners to submit their stories.

Zoll stated, “We’re trying to do it in a way that will allow (the involvement) of others. If a resident

wants to try promoting the area, or one of our faith-based groups, or any of our small businesses right up to our large corporations, they will be able to adapt the True North in the messaging that they put out in regards to advancing the message. We’re trying to include anyone that wants to participate in True North to be able to do so.”

“We also encouraged local businesses and stakeholders to use True North window clings, spread the word about the campaign to friends via social media and by word of mouth,” shared Kappel.

NCI is accepting donations via the website to help further the initiative. Kappel states, “With additional funding, we’ll be able to expand the campaign into additional channels like broadcast TV commercials, digital, transit and outdoor advertising, and invest in a robust PR strategy to share these success stories with a broader audience.”

“The success of the campaign now is in the hands of the community,” stated Zoll.

“It’s going to take everyone in the area to share these authentic stories about the people, places, and progress of the community with people that they know.”

Stay focused on your health in the coming summer months It’s hard to believe that 2019 is about half over, so don’t let the summer months ahead go by without taking advantage of free health screenings and education opportunities in the community to become informed and take charge of your health.

Getting screened at a community wellness event is an easy first step toward knowing your basic health status and early detection for conditions that require follow up like high blood pressure, glucose or cholesterol, as well a variety of cancers. With that in mind, here are some opportunities I would like to share with you.

Washington University physicians will discuss the latest advances in head and neck cancer causes, prevention, screening and treatment at the Siteman Signature Event on June 20 from 6 - 8 p.m. at Christian Hospital in the Detrick Building Atrium. Dinner will be served and there will be an opportunity to participate in a Q&A session with the physicians. Another event focusing on cancer awareness and prevention is the Free Community Health Education Day featuring Washington University physicians discussing eight important ways to prevent cancer,

Pathway to Health is celebrating one year of serving the community with Health Fair 2019 at the Ferguson Empowerment Center at 9420 W. Florissant Ave., on July 20 from 11 a.m. - 2 p.m. Free screenings include blood pressure, cholesterol and glucose. There will be multiple educational booths, a kids’ fun area and free healthy snacks. The Siteman mammography van will also be there offering mammography by appointment only by calling 314-7477222.

Pathway to Health is the partnership between Christian Hospital and The Salvation Army to bring better health to north St. Louis County, under a $1 million grant from the Missouri Foundation for Health.

This initiative addresses the lack of access to affordable care, the need for increased health knowledge, and chronic condition management for African Americans and others, while also working to eliminate socio-economic barriers.

Perhaps one of the most popular pro-

grams in our community – the Just Lose It Weight Loss Challenge – will start up again on Aug. 17 at the fall session kickoff, with an anticipated 400 area residents joining the friendly competition to get healthy and eat right with lifestyle changes, along with winning some great incentive prizes. In closing, I also think it’s a good idea around the Fourth of July to leave the fireworks to the experts to eliminate any trips to the emergency room and to ensure everyone keeps all their fingers and avoids eye injuries and burns. There are numerous public fireworks displays throughout the region that are truly spectacular – and a lot safer!

Clean Air Partnership urges area residents to take action for cleaner air Just in time for daily air quality forecasting’s return for the 2019 season, the American Lung Association’s 2019 “State of the Air” report was released, revealing that the St. Louis region has once again escaped being ranked among the top 25 most-polluted cities in the U.S. However, ozone pollution levels still indicate there are concerns for air pollution in the St. Louis area and nationwide, and The Clean Air Partnership is reminding area residents of the importance of staying informed about the quality of air we breathe, whether it is in a healthy “green” range, unhealthy “red” range, or somewhere in between.

The number of people exposed to unhealthy air increased to nearly 141.1 million, rising from the 133.9 million in the years covered by the 2018 report (20142016). Since many counties in the St. Louis metro area still had multiple days when the air quality was unhealthy, that means there is still much work to be done to protect our local communities from the growing risks to public health resulting from increased levels of ozone and particle pollution.

Far too many cities across the nation saw an increased number of days when ground-level ozone reached unhealthy levels and particle pollution soared to often record-breaking levels in some areas. Altogether, 43.3 percent of the population is exposed to unhealthy levels of air pollution, and while we may not be among the most polluted cities in this year’s ‘State of the Air’ ranking, poor air quality remains a problem that affects everyone in the St. Louis area.

The report also reveals that as climate change continues, cleaning up these pollutants will become ever more

challenging, ultimately making it harder to protect human health. Increased heat in 2017, the third warmest year on record in the U.S., likely drove this increase in ozone as warmer temperatures stimulate the reactions in the atmosphere that cause ozone to form.

“As we prepare to settle into summer when we’re at greater risk for higher levels of ozone pollution in our region, it’s important to keep in mind children, older adults and those who suffer from lung diseases that make them especially vulnerable to poor air quality,” said Susannah Fuchs, Director, Clean Air for the American Lung Association in Missouri. “While the fight to clean up the air we breathe continues, we encourage area residents to remain steadfast in their efforts to take voluntary steps to reduce emissions because those actions play a critical role in improving air quality conditions and lung health of our region.”

As the daily air quality forecasts resume, so does the Clean Air Partnership’s seasonal outreach to educate St. Louis residents on the health effects of air pollution and the steps they can take to keep air quality in healthy ranges. With transportation-related emissions being one of the biggest contributors to air pollution, actions like taking transit, carpooling, vanpooling, telecommuting, avoiding idling our vehicles and combining errands into a single trip can help reduce emissions when poor air quality is forecast-

Citizens for Modern Transit commissioning study to determine economic impact of public transit services

Citizens for Modern Transit, in partnership with the Missouri Public Transit Association and AARP St. Louis, is commissioning a study to help quantify the impact public transportation has on urban, suburban and rural communities statewide. The organizations hope the findings of this six-month Economic Impact of Public Transit Services in the State of Missouri study will reinforce the significance of public transit access and the role it plays in Missouri’s economic viability.

The first-of its-kind study will be conducted

by Robert M. Lewis, FAICP, CEcD, who is an independent consultant and assistant professor of Urban Planning & Development at Saint Louis University. It will analyze the effect of public transit on the economies of Missouri and the St. Louis metropolitan region. Because little quantitative public transit data in Missouri exists, this study will seek to define the current public transportation landscape, rider demographics and spending by transit agencies across the state. It will also measure economic impacts triggered and reinforced by public transit.

“Public transportation goes far beyond sim-

ply getting people where they need to go,” commented Kimberly Cella, executive director of both Citizens for Modern Transit and the Missouri Public Transportation Association. “We hope this study will help riders, non-riders, elected officials and stakeholders better grasp the impact of transit and understand how important it is as a Missouri investment.”

Once the study is complete, Citizens for Modern Transit will use the findings to continue to build the case for more state and federal funding for transit.

“Transit systems across the nation receive approximately 40 percent of their annual operating budgets from their respective states, but this is not the case in Missouri,” Cella added.

“Many local transit providers get less than one percent of their annual operating budgets from the state. A safe, reliable public transit system plays an important role in ensuring our state remains economically viable. Whether people chose to ride it or not – it matters for Missourians. And, this study will hopefully allow us to better showcase why.”

Creve Coeur Economic Development Committee announces 2019 Business Awards Winners The city of Creve Coeur Economic Development Committee recognized the winners of the fourth annual Creve Coeur Business Awards during a ceremony on May 16, at the Creve Coeur–Olivette Chamber Membership Luncheon. The winner for each category was announced, including: Heart of the Community Award 2019 - Barnes-Jewish West County Hospital Barnes-Jewish West County Hospital has been a member of the Creve Coeur community since 1969, providing highly specialized care to the St. Louis region – but this organization stands out for the many ways they give back to the community. During the past year, these health care professionals have offered hundreds of free flu shots and health screenings, donated more than 400 gifts to the Saint Louis Crisis Nursery and have partnered with the Parkway School District to offer shadowing opportunities to students interested in the health care field.

Center invites donors to support Northwest Views: Blood blood supply all summer long

By Patricia Dillon Most look forward to the end of the school year and summer vacation, but it does mean a challenge for the local blood supply. That’s because Mississippi Valley Regional Blood Center’s schedule of high school and college blood drives comes to an end, leading to a decrease in the overall rate of blood donation, by as much as 20 percent.

In response, MVRBC will thank donors who support the blood supply during the summer months with a voucher to redeem for a $10 gift card. The Blood Center’s summer promotion began on Memorial Day and continues through Sept.

8, with multiple drawings for $500 Visa gift cards scheduled during the most challenging weeks of summer.

Amanda Hess, Director, Donor and Public Relations, says it will be critical to schedule additional donations after Memorial Day Weekend and all summer long.

“We may see fewer donors during the summer, but the hospitals we serve never take a day off,” said Hess. “It’s our job to provide a steady blood supply even during holidays, and that’s why we’re asking donors of all blood types to schedule appointments right away and asking sponsor groups to host additional blood drives this summer.”

Blood donations are often used to help treat patients with cancer, patients needing surgery, and victims of trauma. Kelsey Gaby, a local nursing student, received multiple blood transfusions after suffering serious injuries in a car accident at age 16.

“Blood donors helped save my life,” says Gaby.

“You never know when someone might need a lifesaving blood transfusion. That’s why I encourage everyone who can give blood to please consider donating.”

Having recovered from her injuries after multiple surgeries and a lengthy process of rehabilitation, Gaby is now a college student pursuing a career in nursing.

Hazelwood West High School teacher wins 2019 Loeb Prize for Excellence in Teaching Science and Mathematics Hazelwood West High School algebra teacher Tim Levine is the recipient of the 2019 Saint Louis Science Center and Carol B. and Jerome T. Loeb Prize for Excellence in Teaching Science and Mathematics.

Levine and four other finalists received their awards May 14 at a ceremony at the Saint Louis Science Center.

Levine’s prize includes $3,500 and paid fees to any educational conference of his choosing; he was joined by 60 of his students at the awards ceremony.

“I put my energy toward writing lessons that require problem solving, critical thinking, and the desire to learn,” said Levine, who has taught at West High School for five years. “My lesson planning process is to find out what the students are curious about and connect to those interests to the curriculum. Every year and every lesson is a new opportunity to connect student curiosity with the math curriculum.”

Brown Elementary School recognized for going green

Students and staff at Brown Elementary School recently were recognized by the Missouri Gateway Chapter of the U.S. Green Building Council for their efforts in sustainability.

The school was one of 60 that took part in the organization’s Green Schools Quest competition, which challenges schools in Missouri and Southern Illinois to devise and implement creative, effective, and low-cost sustainable practices.

Brown Elementary received the Judges’ Choice Award for creating a Green Team at the school that promoted recycling and teamwork throughout the school year.

Representatives from the Green Building Council visited the school May 10 to present the school with its award, along with a $100 check that can be used toward a sustainability project next school

year.

The Green Team was created in response to a group of teachers noticing a need for recycling at the school and wanting to find a way to get students involved.

It is comprised of about 40 students in grades three-to-five who led the recycling efforts at the school.

The team created recycling bins for classrooms by wrapping about 30 paper boxes in green paper and made signs in a variety of languages that encouraged recycling; they then developed a schedule for collecting recyclable items and taking them outside for pick-up.

The Green Team’s efforts led to collecting about 72 bags of recyclable items throughout the year.

Circus Harmony to receive $14,000 grant from the National Endowment for the Arts National Endowment for the Arts Acting Chairman Mary Anne Carter has approved more than $80 million in grants as part of the Arts Endowment’s second major funding announcement for fiscal year 2019. Included in this announcement is an Art Works grant of $14,000 to Circus Harmony for Circus Harmony in the Parks. Art Works is the Arts Endowment’s principal grantmaking program. The agency received 1,592 Art Works applications for this round of grantmaking and will award 977 grants in this category.

“These awards, reaching every corner of the United States, are a testament to the artistic richness and diversity in our country,” said Mary Anne Carter, acting chairman of the National Endowment for the Arts. “Organizations such as Circus Harmony are giving people

Our students create and present an entertaining and exciting circus show followed by giving a circus workshop for the whole family. We then teach 15 weeks of free classes in various circus arts for children in the neighborhoods!

So many people nowadays experience performing arts on their screens instead of in person. Bringing live entertainment into neighborhoods used to be exactly what

the circus did. In this era of electronic entertainment, we are returning to this personal connection between artist and audience. Seeing children from different neighborhoods working together and creating amazing entertainment and then having them teach children in the audience how to do some of these skills, is very inspiring! We also expect that some of the children in the audience may well be among our future performers!”

This generous NEA grant leverages the $5,000 in support of this program that was awarded from the Saigh Foundation so even more children can learn to defy gravity, soar with confidence and leap over social barriers, all at the same time. Circus Harmony in the Parks shows are being scheduled for this coming summer and fall.

A new scholarship program launched by the Missouri Chamber Foundation in partnership with The Boeing Company and the Missouri Department of Higher Education has awarded $1,000 scholarships to 10 Missouri high school seniors who are dedicated to pursuing a STEM career pathway in college and beyond.

Four of those students attend St. Louis-area high schools. Kayla Kline, Gracemary Nganga and Jennifer Tenholder all attend Hazelwood West High School and Corey Valleroy attends Francis Howell North High School.

Similar to signing days for athletes, the first annual Missouri STEM Signing Day recognized these students as they make their commitments to pursue STEM postsecondary education. At a May 8 event, the recipients were awarded their scholarships and signed their letters of intent to attend a two-year, four-year or technical college in Missouri.

Preparing the workforce is a driving goal of Missouri 2030, the Missouri Chamber’s 15-year strategic initiative to make the state an economic leader by the year 2030. Gallup research conducted for Missouri 2030 revealed that only 44 percent of Missouri business owners are satisfied with the state’s availability of skilled workers, and only 30 percent think Missouri is able to retain top talent.

“Missouri STEM Signing Day is a new effort to help encourage and support the STEM workforce of tomorrow,” said Daniel P. Mehan, Missouri Chamber president and CEO. “We are excited to be partnering with The Boeing Company and the Missouri Department of Higher Education to bring this scholarship opportunity to outstanding Missouri students who are passionate about pursuing postsecondary education and careers in STEM.”

This past weekend, they took the series against the Windy City Thunderbolts who are near the top in the east division.

On Friday, pitcher Dalton Roach (3-0) threw eight solid innings, allowing two runs on five hits with no walks and twelve strikeouts, at one point retiring 14 consecutive hitters winning 4-2.

Saturday the team dropped a tough one as the home team Thunderbolts was victorious 4-3.

In the finale of the series, Alex Winkelman (2-2) allowed just three hits over his seven innings of work, walking three and striking out seven. Yeison Medina pitched a scoreless eighth, and Jackson Sigman picked up his seventh save after a 1-2-3 ninth to close out the game with a 3-0 win.

‘Yeggs’ is a comic series about Robert and Bill, two rabbits who have opened their own egg franchise in the Midwest (St. Louis area). We follow their day to day lives, watching as they go about the hectic task of preparing for their one big day every year. Along the way they have adventures filled with fun, comic doings and pathos.

What is?

I go out on Facebook and Instagram and realize my life is nothing but a big pile of suck.

Why? Because everyone’s having a great time out there.

How do you know? (Man, you guys ask a lot of dopey personal questions!)

Because all my friends are posting images of Caribbean cruises, trips to Europe, surfing in Hawaii or hiking Mt. Everest and getting tons of likes for them. Me, I mainly post pictures of the latest dead thing my cat dropped on my porch and get unfriended. Although, I did have one exciting event the other day; I posted a photo of me in the parking lot at Walmart. I found a front row spot. It was a red letter day. Beat that Mt. Everest summiters!

I realize that my life has no zest, no sparkle and absolutely nothing to make my friends green-eyed with envy. Instead of getting likes, I’m racking up sad, crying emoji faces. Just as I was about to withdraw myself from social media and crawl into a hole for the remainder of my dull, uninteresting life I was rescued. A bright beam shone. It was my husband. He turned on the bedroom light and said, “Get out of bed and do something, like Mrs. Pilkinson. She’s in the Bahamas windsurfing. It’s 10:30 a.m. and you haven’t even broke wind yet.”

“Bahamas? Mrs. Pilkinson?” I thought.

“Hmph! She’s always trying to one up me.”

I reached for my phone and checked her FB. Sure enough there she was grinning like a fool on a tooth-whitening ad while jumping an eight-foot wave and receiving 85 likes!

window and saw her next door in her robe and fuzzy slippers filling her birdfeeder. That’s when it hit me? Fraud! She’s using that new Fake-cation app. The one where you can paste your face on the Eiffel Tower all from the comfort of your living room while lounging in your underpants watching The Bachelor hand out a rose.

I posted a picture of me rowing myself on a gondola in Venice. I immediately got 45 likes.

Things were looking up.

Tomorrow I’ll take a selfie of me holding my cat and stick it on the edge of Everest.
