Nerdy Girlz Book Club encourages young girls to become stronger readers

By Charlotte Beard Few book clubs have taken off quite like the Nerdy Girlz Book Club. The club, for ages six and up, has garnered quite a bit of attention and been a part of the Annie Malone May Day Parade since its inception in January 2016.

The club has grown from 34 sign-ups to a little over 100 active members. The attention all started when Kennedy Thompson’s older brother, who is incarcerated, wrote a heart-felt letter aiming to help his sister get exposure for her book club. Kennedy, age nine, is the cofounder of the club with her mom Akiba. Kennedy’s proud brother was successful in his endeavors and the public began to take notice. Last year, the Hazelwood School District Board of Education awarded Kennedy with a Kids on the Move! award for her start of the book club.

The club’s mission is to inspire young female readers to become knowledgeable of different people, places, and things, through reading while having fun. The “girlz” meet twice a month on either a prescheduled Saturday or Sunday.

One of the meetings takes place at the Jamestown Bluffs Library or another library; the other meeting day is always a fun day. The club’s next fun day on June 11 will take place at the St. Louis Zoo. Primarily, the book club requires each girl take a book home for one month and read it throughout the month for discussion at the next meeting. activities that surround the featured book.

The book time is followed by their birthday club celebration and snacks.

There is a lifetime membership fee of $30 which includes a backpack filled with fun girl glasses, a water bottle, ink pen, name tag, lapel pin and a certificate that certifies the girl as a member. The $15 monthly fee covers the featured book each girl receives as their own as well as the birthday club celebration and snacks.

Leah Nicholson who handles Nerdy Girlz’ public relations, quite literally stumbled onto the club. “I was in this room [at the library] and [I] walked past and saw these girls with the shirts…I said ‘I want to join.

I want to do this, too. What is this?’ So, she [Akiba] started telling us [with friend] about the information. That was in March – we went to our first meeting in March.”

Nicholson, who is also a special education teacher in Ferguson, has various roles with the club. “I do the public speaking. I’m more of the person who can reach out to people like our radio stations because I’m in the school system. I always wear my [Nerdy Girlz] shirt to work. We have girls that don’t have any other activities so this gives [them not only] an opportunity to forge sisterhood with girls, but also to really have a love of reading.”

North County Incorporated (NCI) has tirelessly worked for the North County area since its founding in 1977. For the past 40 years, NCI served as, “The Voice for North County,” and represents the 45

municipalities, the unincorporated areas of North St. Louis County, area hospitals, businesses, education, and others.

This organization advocates for investment in the economic growth, community development and quality of life services that our region desperately needs.

the use of bicycles as vehicles of war. These soldiers endured rough riding conditions as they traveled from Fort Missoula, Montana., to St. Louis in just 41 days, where they were greeted by over 10,000 people awaiting their arrival in Forest Park. This is the 15th annual event being held at the Mary Meachum site to commemorate the historical significance of the site and the importance of black history in St. Louis.

Florissant requests release of Community Development Block Grant funds The city of Florissant requested the releases of 2017 CDBG funds from the U.S. Department of Housing and Urban Development (HUD) on May 25, following a two-week period in which the public will have the opportunity to comment on the slated use of the funds.

The Florissant 2017 CDBG Annual Action Plan identifies community needs and has been proposed for the following projects: • Home improvement loans to eligible, low to moderate income households throughout Florissant.

• Home improvement – mechanical grants for the repair/replacement of HVAC and/or water heaters to eligible, low to moderate income households throughout Florissant.

• COPS program assistance with wheelchair ramps and materials and supplies for homes being rehabbed by volunteers for low to moderate income eligible or disabled residents.

• Mortgage, rental, and utility assistance - the

city will issue an RFQ to local service providers to start a mortgage, rental, and utility assistance program to serve low- to moderate-income households facing emergency or severe temporary economic hardship.

• Program administration – providing for the salary, benefits and training of the CDBG program administrators.

Hazelwood City Council approves proclamation declaring May as Building Safety Month

To help remind the public about the vital role code enforcement officers play in making sure the community has safe, efficient and livable buildings, Hazelwood City Council members recently approved a proclamation declaring the month of May 2017 as Building Safety Month.

At a recent council meeting, Hazelwood Mayor Matthew Robinson presented this proclamation to the city’s Code Administrator Pat McSheehy and his code enforcement staff.

Sponsored by the International Code Council, Building Safety Month is a public awareness campaign to help individuals, families and businesses understand what it takes to create safe and sustainable structures. The compaign reinforces the need for adopting modern model building codes, a strong and efficient system of code enforcement and a well-trained, professional workforce to maintain the system.

This year’s campaign theme is, “Code Officials

– Partners in Community Safety and Economic Growth.” Its purpose is to draw attention to the need of having building codes in order to protect citizens from disasters like fires, weather-related events and structural collapse.

Code officials work year-round to ensure that developers use safe construction procedures and abide by existing codes to maintain the structural integrity of all buildings within the community.

They are the unknown guardians of public safety who assure that the homes, apartments, schools, churches and businesses used by local residents are safe.

“Building Safety Month 2017 encourages everyone to take the necessary steps to make sure that the places where we live, learn, work, worship and play are safe, and recognizes that countless lives have been saved due to the implementation of safety codes by local and state agencies,” McSheehy said.

Hazelwood Board of Education votes on middle school options

In an effort to alleviate overcrowding in one Hazelwood middle school, and to address the concerns of low enrollment in the other middle school, during the May 2 Hazelwood School District Board of Education meeting, the board delivered a unanimous vote on “Option #6” which is outlined as follows: • Alleviate overcrowding at Northwest Middle by redrawing the attendance lines for approximately 25 students from McNair Elementary to attend West Middle School.

• All eighth grade students who would have attended East Middle for the 2017-2018 school year; will attend East Middle at the East Middle/East High Complex.

• All sixth and seventh grade students scheduled to attend East Middle will attend either Central Middle or Southeast Middle.

• Any student in the East Middle attendance area attending Central Middle will return to East High for high school.

• The creation of an East Middle/East High complex is a pilot program and placement of students after the 2017-2018 school year is contingent on the possibility of redistricting for the 2018-2019 school year.

• The eighth-grade students attending East Middle/East High will ride the same buses as the high school students as well as follow a similar bell schedule. As a pilot, the district will add bus monitors to assist during this transition.

• The plan includes repurposing the East Middle building to be used as an “Alternative Opportunities Center.” This new center would allow the school district to relocate the current, and to create additional alternative learning programs for students. The Opportunities Center would also house several community resource partners to benefit the entire school district and community.

As the Option #6 plan is implemented, additional information will shared with the families who will be impacted.

Florissant City Council unanimously passes ordinance to increase pay for Florissant police officers

The Florissant City Council, at its meeting on May 9, unanimously passed an ordinance raising pay for members of the Florissant Police Department. Uniformed personnel will transition into the new pay plan with the city’s 2018 fiscal year effective Dec. 1.

Each uniformed employee will be eligible to move to the next step within her/his respective pay grade upon reaching the anniversary of her/ his date of hiring based upon completion of a positive evaluation.

At Florissant Mayor Thomas Schneider’s direction, Florissant Police Chief Timothy Lowery and his command staff did extensive research and made a recommendation to the city council, which was used to draft the police pay bill passed by the council.

“Funds raised with the passage of Proposition P on the April 4 election ballot in St. Louis County will enable us to maintain the excellent standards of our Florissant Police Department,” said Jackie Pagano, President of the Florissant City Council.

“The voters of St. Louis County sent a message that public safety is a vital concern for residents throughout St. Louis County, including its largest municipality, Florissant.”

Schneider was the first municipal leader to speak out in favor of Prop P for the safety of all residents of St. Louis County. The mayor and the nine-member Florissant City Council unanimously endorsed a ‘yes’ vote on Proposition P on the April 4 election ballot.

Prop P was passed by a 63 percent majority of voters in the April 4 election to fund public safety.

“We strongly endorsed passage of Proposition P to help our Florissant Police Department improve its already excellent standards,” said Schneider.

“And to encourage all law enforcement agencies in the county to do the same to protect everyone in St. Louis County.”

The Florissant City Council will review the grade and step wage schedule prior to future fiscal years and make adjustments necessary to keep the police wage plan competitive.

Operation Food Search introduces new summertime food opportunities

No matter how hot St. Louis summers get, children – approximately 173,000 in our bi-state region – still need to be fed.

Enter Operation Food Search (OFS), a nonprofit hunger relief organization, which has teamed up with new area partners to create additional avenues and expand existing methods for feeding children 18 years of age and younger. The Summer Food Service Program (SFSP), which is funded by the USDA, ensures that children continue to receive nutritious meals when school is not in session. The summer meal program runs through Aug. 11 with mobile and stationary service Mon. through Fri. In 2012, OFS sponsored SFSP at a single location, serving 5,000 meals to children. Last year the organization served nearly 100,000 meals at a combination of stationary and mobile sites throughout the St. Louis region. The introduction of the mobile meals concept proved successful in breaking down transportation barriers and increased access to healthy food. As a result, child participation at OFS-sponsored sites grew by 40 percent over summer 2015. This year the mobile meal vans will expand from 16 locations to a total of 33.

New collaborations and extended services include:

• OFS will team up with 20 AmeriCorps leaders who are part of the Corporation for National and Community Service, a federal agency that helps millions of Americans improve the lives of their fellow citizens through service. Along with meal service, AmeriCorps volunteers will provide educational interaction and entertaining activities.

• The St. Louis Public Library – which has five locations – will now feature the OFS mobile route service at the following branch locations: Carpenter, Carondelet, Central, Divoll, and Walnut Park.

OFS has offered the stationary option at several St. Louis County Libraries since 2014 and will continue this year.

• St. Louis Community Credit Union – which has three of its 15 locations for distribution sites – will now feature OFS mobile route service at the following branches: Gateway (Union and Natural Bridge), Pagedale (24:1 Wealth Accumulation Center), and Benton Park (South City Wealth Accumulation Center).

• Community pop-up pantries, which will be held on five Fridays throughout the summer, will provide shelf-stable food, fresh fruits and vegetables, and on-site cooking demonstrations.

The pop-up pantries will be located on the existing mobile routes to ensure access to healthy food over the weekend.

You know what’s frustrating…besides walking around in public all day with a giant piece of lettuce wedged in between your tooth? Now, I’m not saying this happened to me, but I might add, it’s even more frustrating when no one has the common courtesy to inform you about it. And yes, these very same people are only too quick to stare at you like you’re a crazed hobo who never practices oral hygiene when a simple, “Ma’am, you might want to check a mirror. It looks like you’ve been making out with a salad bar,” would solve the problem.

But I digress. You know what’s even more frustrating than green teeth? Technology. Nothing is so useful yet so useless as technology.

Case and points: GPS’s were designed to take a person to any destination, thus doing away with those annoying paper maps, which could never be read accurately or folded back up correctly. They were thus jammed into the glove compartment only to be retrieved after a major beverage spill occurred and no extra napkins were available.

So we were excited to use this new toy one evening while visiting another state. After developing a strong hankering for some Chinese food, we plunked out the coordinates and began our journey. The area was dark and unfamiliar. Who knew what dangers lurked around these strange streets? Good thing this handy little device could guide us through the unknown.

After numerous twists and turns and miles away from civilization, we were led down a dark alley and right into the parking lot of the local graveyard. All we wanted was Kung Pao chicken!

We hoped this was not an indication of its secret

ingredients.

Second point: My in-laws dislike technology. The old on/off button on the television is high-tech enough. As such, they can barely operate the DVD player.

They refer to their step-by-step instructions and visual charts and must have The Geek Squad on speed dial in case all fails.

One day we smugly introduced them to Siri; our nifty little butler-in-a-box.

“You really should get one of these smartphones. Siri can answer any question. Try it,” I urged.

My mother-in-law warily spoke into the phone, “Who is Ingrid Bergman?”

Siri replied, “It doesn’t look like you have an app for Angry Birds. You may want to try the app store.”

I smiled meekly.

She looked at me as if I had lawn clippings in my teeth.

Understanding sky condition terms Why do you read the Community News?

Many folks have asked what is the difference between partly sunny and partly cloudy?

There is a difference.

This isn’t the story about Goosey-Loosey running to tell her friends that she thinks the sky is falling, but rather a perspective on why certain terminology is used to describe sky conditions.

The terminology used for sky cover in a forecast is based on the predominant sky condition for the day or night based on the percentage of the sky that is covered by opaque clouds. Opaque clouds are those that are not transparent – which means the sun or moon can’t penetrate through them.

Let me explain.

If the sky is expected to be 88 to 100 percent covered with opaque clouds then cloudy or overcast wording will be used to define the sky cover. This is typically used when a high probability of precipitation is forecast.

Mostly cloudy skies are when the majority of the sky is covered in opaque clouds or between 70 to 87 percent. Now, here is where it gets fun. What is the difference between partly sunny and mostly cloudy? The answer is simple, sort of. Partly sunny and mostly cloudy skies are when at least 51-69 percent of the sky is covered with opaque clouds.

Forecasters will be more prone to use partly sunny for the lower of this percentage and mostly cloudy for the higher end of the range.

In addition, since we don’t have sun at night, mostly cloudy would be used to describe the

nighttime sky cover.

Mostly sunny or partly cloudy skies are forecast when 26 to 50 percent of the sky is filled with opaque clouds—again the lower side of the percent would be used for mostly sunny and the higher end of the percentage range would use partly cloudy. At night, partly cloudy would be the default choice.

Sunny and mostly clear skies is when six to 25 percent of the sky is expected to be covered with clouds—for the daytime forecast sunny would be used and for the nighttime forecast mostly clear would be used. Sunny and clear wording is used when zero to five percent of the sky is covered with opaque clouds. Here again, we would use sunny for day and clear for night.

These sky parameters are used by the National Weather Service to define the percentage of the sky that are or will be covered by opaque clouds during the particular forecast period.

North County Incorporated honors community leaders making a difference in North St. Louis County As part of the organization’s 40th Annual Breakfast celebration, North County Incorporated (NCI) recognized several area leaders for making a significant positive impact in North County. At a sold-out event on May 19 more than 600 business, civic and community leaders gathered to honor this year’s award recipients.

Bob Lindsey, editor and publisher, Independent News, received the prestigious Elmer Belsha Leadership Award. This award is presented annually to an individual who has made a long-term commitment to NCI and North County, and who has had a positive impact on the community.

NCI’s Business Development Awards were presented to those whose efforts have positively affected the economic development and business climate of the North County area.

This year, awards were given to The Orthopedic Center at SSM Health DePaul Hospital, Mike Becker of Suburban Heights Apartment Redevelopment, The Boeing Company’s 777X Wing Assembly Manufacturing Plant, and Trans-Lux Corporation.

The Orthopedic Center at SSM Health DePaul Hospital represents a $16 million investment in the community and enhanced the full spectrum of orthopedic services in North County. Mike Becker of Suburban Heights Apartment Development recently spearheaded the renovation of a blighted and dilapidated apartment complex in the city of Kinloch, near the University of Missouri-St. Louis campus.

The Boeing Company’s 777X Wing Assembly Manufacturing Plant is their new 424,000 square foot plant located in Berkeley. In 2016, The Boeing Company committed more than $300 million in company funds to construct and outfit their first commercial aircraft facility in the St. Louis area.

Trans-Lux Corporation announced in February 2017 the investment of $2.35 million into retrofitting 66,000 square feet space in the Aviator Business Park, located in Hazelwood, to convert the space into a manufacturing plant to produce digital LED video scoreboards.

Marlon Wharton, Guidance Counselor for Riverview Gardens School District and CEO of Gentlemen of Vision, has been chosen for this award because of his commitment to at-risk-youth.

Sister Helen Negri, CEO, Marygrove in Florissant, has led the organization for over 35 years. Marygrove is home to children who are working to move beyond the emotional burden of abuse or neglect.

The University of Missouri-St. Louis Under the Leadership of Chancellor Thomas George has invested over $120 million into North County with new and renovated facilities on the campus through the new $20 million College of Business building, a new Patient Care Center for the College of Optometry, a $32 million Science Learning Building, and a $36 million Student Recreation and Wellness Center.

Public Service Awards were presented to outstanding individuals, elected, appointed or employed by a public body whose long-time service has had a positive impact on the community and/or public

Twelve students at Pattonville High School were recognized with Pirate Code Student of Character awards for exhibiting character traits emphasized in the school’s Pirate Code: Be Respectful, Be Responsible, Be Involved.

Each year the Pirate Code/PBIS (Positive Behavior and Intervention Supports) leadership team at Pattonville High School invites staff to nominate students that exemplify these traits. The Pirate Code chairpersons and administrative liaison review the nominees and make the final selection of the school’s Student of Character recipients for the year. This year, one student from each grade level was honored in each category. During the school’s spring pep assembly, students were recognized as Most Respectful, Most Responsible and Most In-

volved.

Earning the designation of Most Respectful for exemplifying the character traits of respect, kindness, peace and self-control were freshman Tanisha Long, sophomore Joshua Wallace, junior Michael Pirrie and senior Mikaella Rectin.

Over the last six decades, the Hazelwood Parent Teacher Association (PTA) Council Scholarship Program has awarded 3,500 scholarships, totaling more than $3 million since it was established in 1959. On May 11 the Hazelwood PTA Council, Hazelwood School District Board of Education and HSD administrators all took part in honoring 62 deserving Hazelwood seniors.

Each student received a $500 scholarship.

“Every year the goal is to raise enough money to provide $500 scholarships to deserving students,” said Sonja Stiles, Hazelwood PTA Council Scholarship Chair. “The money is used

to encourage the advancement of education for deserving seniors of the Hazelwood School District. The PTA Council Scholarship Program has truly made a difference for those who are seeking to further their academic pursuits.”

The PTA Council raises money in various ways throughout the school year, from donations to special events such as the PTA Run/Walk.

“PTA Council is proud of its history of raising money for the scholarship foundation to provide graduating seniors with college scholarships.

We hope to be able to continue this tradition for many years to come,” said Stiles.

Three Hazelwood School District seniors recently received Carl A. Lucas Scholarships from God First Church in St. Louis. The students are seniors Jordan Carey and Jayla Perry from Hazelwood Central High School, and Kaysi Lee from Hazelwood East High School.

Carey, Perry, and Lee earned a combined total of $4,000 in scholarship money. Lee received $2,500, Perry received $1,000, and Carey received $500.

Bruce Green, HSD assistant superintendent for high schools was excited to hear that these three students were selected to receive this scholarship.

“Carey, Perry, and Lee each received scholarships that will go a long way to help supplement college expenses. We are grateful to God First Church and Pastor Carl Lucas for supporting students and the continued support from the faith-based community,” said Green.

Key members of the NextJenn STEM TEAM and Superintendent Art McCoy traveled to New York, New York on May 9 and May10 to present and represent Jennings School District and the state of Missouri in its success to becoming the first NAF Academy School in the St. Louis metropolitan area and beyond with four certified academies – the academies of health sciences, IT, engineering and finance.

Four amazing talents led the charge to #changethenarrative. Deja Brown – sister of Michael Brown Jr. – who has a Pharmacy Technician Certification, Betty Mancuso who is a Project Lead the Way Engineer and Coder, Taj Robinson who is a Project Lead the Way Engineer and HTML Webmaster, and Antawan Ross, who is has a Cisco Certification. Each presented and shared stories,

accomplishments and highlights of their experiences with a number of executives. Also, students spoke with and listened to personal life lessons first-hand from MasterCard CEO Anjay Banga, former chief executive, and chairman of Citigroup Sandy Weill, and five-time World Series Champion, and Cy Young Award Winner David Cone.

In addition to serious business, the students were able to take in the United Nations, the New York Subway, Times Square, Junior’s New York Cheesecake, the Empire State Building, the Queensborough Cantilever Bridge, the Roosevelt Hotel, LaGuardia Airport, the InterContinental Barclay Hotel, and New York-style pizza.

This leadership experience was paid for by David Steward and World Wide Technology and National Academy Foundation.

Little Creek Nature Area receives national recognition as a Certified Nature Explore Classroom Little Creek Nature Area’s Discovery Classroom, has earned national recognition as a Certified Nature Explore Classroom from the Nature Explore program. The Nature Explore Program is a collaboration of Dimensions Educational Research Foundation and the Arbor Day Foundation.

This certification confers upon Little Creek a number of benefits, including membership in an ever-expanding network of more than 370 compatible spaces nationwide. These Certified Nature Explore Classrooms foster highly effective, nature-based outdoor learning.

“Little Creek’s commitment to providing research-based and nature-rich learning offers a wonderful example to programs and educators throughout the country,” said Heather Fox, director of communications and outreach for the Nature Explore program.

“These spaces inspire hands-on activity, creativity, play and plenty of time exploring the natural world.”

The unique outdoor classrooms – which are springing up like wildflowers across the country – offer interactive elements such as musical instruments made of natural materials, garden or pathway areas and natural materials for building and creating art. Research consistently shows that children who learn and grow in Nature Explore Classrooms exhibit enhanced concentration, develop creativity and problem-solving techniques, manage stress in healthy ways and develop skills across the spectrum of academic and creative learning.

Nature Explore Classrooms were developed by a team of master educators, landscape architects and researchers in response to the documented growing disconnect between children and nature. The classrooms help fill this void by integrating researchbased outdoor learning opportunities into children’s daily lives.

Classrooms that are designed according to standards and principles described in Dimensions Educational Research Foundation’s “Learning With Nature Idea Book” are eligible to become Certified Nature Explore Classrooms.

Recently senior Maddi Leigh of Francis Howell High School (FHHS) on a rainy day at the Missouri State High School Track & Field Championships took home the grand prize as her final event as a stellar athlete.

The All-State medal count for her was already in the double digits so she added the one top goal she had on her list, to win a state championship, which she did in the women’s 1600-meter race.

“It was pretty amazing, I knew I had worked hard for four years for a moment like this, and I’m glad my dream came true,” said Maddi. That day she also became only the second female Viking in history to run a sub-five minute mile.

Her accomplishments in high school was not only on the field but she was a superstar Viking in the classroom.

Maddi is a member of National Honor Society (NHS) with an outstanding 4.23 Grade Point Average (GPA) in her four years, despite the long hours of practice she has put in to reach her athletic goals and understands the connection.

“Being committed in school really helps you work hard in everything you do, and seeing improvements in athletics really motivates you to work hard in the classroom so you can go far later in life.”

Dr. Dave Wedlock her principal comments, “She made her exceptional character known through her persistent courage to do her best, even when she knew it may not have always been enough to win. She has tenacious honesty in assessing her performances and endless optimism that she is capable of performing at a higher level.”

Maddi was recently named the St. Charles County Sports Hall of Fame Female Athlete of the Year, in a county that has had so much athletic success. She’s a four-time Academic All-Conference honoree in both Cross Country and Track. She was the GAC South Champion all four years of

The theme of this year’s 4th of July parade is Honoring First Responders. The parade begins at 10 a.m. The parade route starts on Benedetta at Lockport. The parade will proceed on Benedetta to Tideland, turn on to Majella, then on to Natural Bridge, ending at Target. Evening activities will be held at the Bridgeton Municipal Athletic Complex (BMAC) beginning at 6 p.m. The evening will include music, food trucks, and a spectacular fireworks display at dusk. Be aware that road work on St. Charles Rock Road may cause some traffic issues so don’t delay, plan ahead to reach BMAC by 8 p.m.. Kate Mara shines in ‘Megan Leavey’

ithout a doubt, Gal Gadot has become everyone’s favorite Amazon warrior. Her performance in “Wonder Woman” could conceivably turn the tide around for the DC Universe movies and make Marvel Studios executives start looking over their shoulders.

This weekend, another female warrior joins the cinematic fray, but this one is based on a real person. The impressive Kate Mara stars in “Megan Leavey,” the story of an American soldier who refuses to give up on her best friend, even under the worst of conditions. Directed

by Gabriela Cowperthwaite, this is an impressive, almost understated film about real heroes.

During the Iraq war, Leavey completes basic training and is assigned to work with the K9 corps. Initially, her duties involve cleaning out kennels and acting as a human practice dummy. After much lobbying, she becomes the handler of Rex, a rather aggressive German shepherd. Though frightened of him at first, the young Marine bonds with her new friend.

Leavey and her four-legged partner are deployed to Iraq, where they save many lives thanks to Rex’s keen nose. When they both return stateside after two tours of duty, Leavey wants to adopt Rex, but runs into some military snafus and roadblocks.

Leavey intriguing.

With just a small role in the film, “Harry Potter” star Tom Felton makes quite an impression in “Megan Leavey.” As Andrew Dean, an experienced dog handler and mentor to Leavey, Felton turns this small part into a standout performance. The same can be said for musician Common, who definitely enjoys his role as Leavey’s commanding officer.

Edie Falco doesn’t fare as well as the title character’s rather shrill and demanding mother, Jackie. Will Patton also is wasted as Jim, Jackie’s second husband. These characters, though necessary for plot development, add little value to the film.

If there’s any fault to be had here, though, it’s with writers Pamela Gray, Annie Mumolo and Tim Lovestedt. Based on the fact-checking movie websites, the writers took several liberties with Leavey’s story. Artistic license is one thing, but the real, unvarnished story of two brave warriors can stands on its own.

Thankfully, the most memorable portions of

the film are true-to-life.

Mara and the four-legged actor playing Rex carry “Megan Leavey,” making it a satisfying, true-life story of courage and friendship.

Cowperthwaite avoids making this a typical wartime drama, keeping the focus on the bond between two brave Marines.
