By Charlotte Beard Reality television has made a great impact on the culture and various lives in society from launching the careers of entertainers to expanding the popularity of those involved in the culinary arts. With the increase of various cooking shows, it is fitting that shows that focus on physical feats and healthy living would have its place.

The “American Ninja Warrior” show was one of the main inspirations behind the creation of the Hazelwood Ninja Obstacle course in Howdershell Park, located at

6701 Howdershell Road in Hazelwood. The course officially opened Sept. 9, 2017 during Hazelwood’s Harvestfest.

Doug Littlefield, Superintendent for Hazelwood’s Parks and Recreation Division, came up with the idea for the course around the time Hazelwood was applying for one of the municipal parks grants. He had been observing the growth in popularity for cross training and obstacle courses.

“And I loved that ‘American Ninja Warrior’ show,” Littlefield shared.

He presented his idea to a playground company, Landscape Structures out of Minnesota. Littlefield shared that in approximately two months the company followed up with presentation of some preliminary drawings. Hazelwood picked out 11 different obstacles that were of interest.

Landscape Structures handled the logistics for approval of the designs for safety.

The “American Ninja Warrior” television show has not only influenced the creation of Hazelwood’s obstacle course, but it has also influenced one of Hazelwood’s longtime residents. Missourians may have the opportunity to see 37-year-old John Wilmas on the Indianapolis show when it airs on NBC Monday, June 18, at 7 p.m. for a two-hour episode. For Wilmas’ entry into the competition he included footage of him doing some of Hazelwood’s obstacles.

Wilmas, who works for an architectural firm downtown, has been trying out for the show for the past four years. He received call-backs for the last two videos he submitted for Season 9 (2017) and Season 10 (2018) and an invitation to participate in a city qualifying round. Last year he placed 37th out of 110 contestants. Viewers will have to wait until June 18 to determine if Wilmas made the show for Season 10.

Wilmas is a fan of Hazelwood’s obstacle course.

“What a great idea! I’m proud it’s here in my hometown so I can use it,” he said.

Additionally, he believes it is a great way to promote fitness and it can provide some deterrence to cell phone usage for teens and young adults. Also, he shared that his six-year-old son, Kaiden, likes to join him at Howdershell Park to attempt doing some of the obstacles. Though some of the obstacles are too challenging for his age he enjoys spending time on the playground. Wilmas shared that he envisions both he and his son climbing the obstacles together in another four or five years.

Wilmas said that for over four years he has also been working out at KOR Komplex, a facility in St. Charles that offers obstacles, fitness and parkour training. He stated that most of their obstacles are hand-built for strength. Due to his long affiliation with the facility he became instrumental in uniting Littlefield and KOR Komplex for Littlefield’s desire to have a local competition.

“We have teamed-up and are working on having a full competition sometime this fall,” states Littlefield. The day of Harvestfest, Sept. 8, is a tentative date for the competition. There will be a combination of Hazelwood’s Ninja Obstacle course and a ground course of approximately 13 additional obstacles. Participants can expect various challenges not limited to warped walls and atlas stones.

“John is involved with me on the competition as well,” shared Littlefield. “He’s been not only an ambassador for me but a great resident for us [in helping] promote this and help guide me as we move ahead. We are big fans of John Wilmas

“This will be, to my knowledge, the first ever speed race—Ninja Warrior/Hybrid Obstacle course race,” Wilmas said of local races.

Wilmas is working with the team on planning the type of obstacles to be included and other logistics such as timing for challenges and the age group divisions.

“I’ve done a lot of races for timing. That’s one of the biggest issues with a race. A lot of races will fail after a few years because people won’t come back just because of the timing issue. KOR Komplex is going to help build the obstacles.”

Wilmas’ passion for physical challenges and fitness is not limited to competitions.

During his lunch hour he works out on the Gateway Arch’s Grand Staircase. He created a 30-minute routine in which he invites co-workers to join him in the activity. Wilmas said that he believes his sharing of this story in the last video to the “American Ninja Warrrior” show made a difference.

“It’s a way for me to help them get out of the office,” stated Wilmas. “Get a quick workout out in—get your blood pumping. And then back to work.”

Wilmas invites others who are in the downtown area at noon to join him and others for the 30-minute session. Unless the weather is bad, he has a group out at the staircase once a week. As for those who are in and near Hazelwood, Littlefield reports that since the course went live last year its usage has been consistent except of course during the cold months.

“It’s out there and open to anybody all the time. Nobody reserves it or shuts it down. We encourage people to get out (there) and give it a shot,” he said.

Fiesta in Florissant returns to spice up North County Hispanic Festival, Inc. of Greater St. Louis will be presenting Fiesta in Florissant at the Knights of Columbus Park located in Florissant near the corner of Lindbergh and Washington St. The event will take place on Saturday, June 23 from 10 a.m. to 10 p.m. and on Sunday, June 24 from 11 a.m. to 9 p.m. The colorful and festive Welcoming Ceremony will begin on June 23 at 5 p.m. with remarks from the city of Florissant Mayor Thomas Schneider.

The two-day celebration will feature non-stop entertainment with live Latino bands and folkloric dancers from various countries including Panama, Colombia and Mexico. This year expect salsa, bachata, cumbia, flamenco, South American and Mexican music to entertain the crowd including Banda Artilleros Mexican Band, Renacer Latino Salsa Band, Ritmo Tropical and Los Primos de Tierra Mexican Band.

There will also be a wide variety of foods and beverages from Latin and South America available for purchase such as tamales, tacos and empanadas from Colombia, Argentina and Mexico. He has performed hundreds of magic shows at libraries, schools, family reunions, churches, festivals and birthday parties.

Carpunky found himself inspired after watching a David Copperfield magic show on television. The same night he found himself at a local library in St. Louis and was offered to be one of the first five auditions when the network came to St. checking out several books on magic.

He started teaching magic to individuals of Louis. However, a month prior, his wife had been of all ages at Southern Illinois University of diagnosed with a very rare stomach cancer and Edwardsville and at the time was the second so he declined the offer to take care of his wife.

Carpunky has advice for aspiring magicians, youngest magician to teach magic at a university.

He is also one of the top performers in the “Practice, practice, practice because that’s the St. Louis and Riverbend Area having more most important thing in magic,” said Carpunky.

It is official. The day has finally come that three of the city of Florissant’s directors have officially retired as of June 1. The three directors combined had 95 years of dedicated service with the city of Florissant.

All three directors will be missed by many. They gave their heart and soul to the city and committed so much of their own time to the community.

Christian Hospital receives American Heart Association’s EMS Gold Plus Award for quality heart attack treatment Christian Hospital has received the American Heart Association’s Mission: Lifeline EMS Gold Plus Award for implementing quality improvement measures for the treatment of patients who experience severe heart attacks.

Every year, more than 250,000 people experience an ST elevation myocardial infarction (STEMI) the deadliest type of heart attack caused by a blockage of blood flow to the heart that requires timely treatment. More than 75 students from the Opportunity Center, in the Hazelwood School District, were recognized at the first ever opportunity center senior recognition program.

Last year, the Hazelwood School District Board of Education approved the move of all alternative education programs to the former Hazelwood East Middle School. The building was renamed Hazelwood Opportunity Center. The alternative education program offers five programs; Hazelwood success academy, Missouri option program, alternative support center, short-term suspension and positive choice.

“The Opportunity Center gives students who do not perform well in a traditional classroom setting, another chance to be successful,” said Dr. Darrell Strong, director of alternative education.

“This serves as a reminder for educators on why we do what we do, to help prepare students to be college ready or equipped for whatever path they choose after high school,” said Dr. Collins-Hart, Hazelwood school district superintendent.

June 18-20: Safety and defense seminars

Chief Tim Lowery and the Florissant Police Department in cooperation with the Florissant Senior Citizens Office are hosting a series of two hour Safety and Defense seminars. “Confrontation Avoidance and Safety for Older Adults” will take place June 18 from 1 – 3 p.m. at the James J. Eagan Center. “Advanced Confrontation Avoidance for Older Adults” will take place June 19 from 1 – 3 p.m. at the Florissant JFK Center. “Escape and Evasion” (for teens and up) will take place June 20 from 6:30 - 8:30 p.m. at the James J. Eagan Center. Senior

courses are specially designed to meet the needs of older adults with sometimes limited mobility and physical strength. The “Escape and Evasion” course has a more physical component and is designed for teenagers and up. Physical exertion is minimal to participate and strictly voluntary.

Comfortable clothing is recommended. The instructors for the course are Tom Jost, retired Detective Sergeant from the Florissant Police Dept. and Tscharna Senn, retired Lieutenant from the Gainesville, Florida Police Dept. Both instructors are international experts in the field of physical skill training and surviving violent encounters. Rascals cool off as temperature rises The River City Rascals professional baseball team play in the West Division of the Frontier League with their home games at CarShield Field in O’Fallon.

The team was on a torrid pace, but has only won four of the last 10 games. Saying that, at this writing they have fallen into second place, a gameand-a-half out of first place.

The pitching for the Rascals has been stellar with only the bats becoming silent. Hector Hernandez, the 6’1” 200 pound lefty from Rio Piedra, Puerto Rico, has been consistent by piling up four wins in five games this young season, tying him for first place in the league.

Right-handed pitcher Josh Kimborowicz, at 6’3” 210 pounds, has thrown 35 innings and has struck out 35 opposing batters; good enough for fifth place in the league.

The Rascals’ total pitching staff leads the Frontier League, allowing just over three runs a game.

Parrillada Mixta with Garlic and Sweet Chipotle Marinades

Fill in the blank squares in the grid, making sure that every row, column and 3-by-3 box includes all the digits 1 through 9.

Servings: 6-8 Sweet Chipotle Marinade: 8 garlic cloves, peeled 1 red bell pepper, de-seeded and stemmed 1 small white onion 1 teaspoon ground cinnamon 1 teaspoon smoked paprika 8 tablespoons olive oil 8 tablespoons agave syrup 4 tablespoons fresh lime juice 1 1/4cups orange juice 1 1/4 cups cold water 4 tablespoons Tabasco Chipotle Pepper Sauce salt, to taste 2 pounds extra-large shrimp, peeled, deveined and tails on 4-6 boneless, skinless chicken breasts Garlic Chipotle Marinade: 14 garlic cloves, peeled 1 medium white onion, quartered 1 1/2 cups light Mexican beer 3/4 cup olive oil 1 tablespoon coarse black pepper 4 tablespoons Tabasco Chipotle Pepper Sauce 1 teaspoon salt 2 flank steaks (1 pound each)

Directions: To make Garlic Chipotle Marinade: In blender, puree garlic, onion, beer, olive oil and pepper.

Transfer puree to large mixing bowl; add chipotle sauce and salt.

Place steaks in re-sealable plastic bag and pour in marinade.

Note: Marinating time depends on the cut of beef selected. For fajitas or skirt steak, marinate at least 6 hours.

To make Sweet Chipotle Marinade: In blender, puree garlic, bell pepper, onion, cinnamon, paprika, olive oil, agave, lime juice, orange juice, water and chipotle pepper sauce.

In separate re-sealable plastic bags, divide

marinade over chicken and shrimp. Allow shrimp to marinate 8 hours and chicken 24 hours.

To prepare meat: Remove steak, shrimp and chicken from marinade and set aside. Heat grill to medium-high heat. Brush off excess marinade and grill chicken first, to desired doneness, then steak and shrimp.

Note: Cooking times will vary depending on cuts of meat and desired doneness. For best results, use a meat thermometer.

Serving suggestion: Place steak, shrimp and chicken on large platter and serve with side items such as fresh guacamole, pico de gallo, grilled onions, fresh limes and fresh corn tortillas.

The Parr Family returns in ‘Incredibles 2’

For over 20 years, Pixar Animation Studios has enjoyed incredible box office success.

Their 1995 hit “Toy Story” was a game-changer, which they followed up with family-friendly films about bugs, monsters and anthropomorphic cars. “Coco,” a 2017 holiday release, hit all the right cylinders in a story about honoring the dead. It’s rare that the studio has a film that misfires but happens occasionally.

Pixar makes great sequels as well, with the fourth installment of “Toy Story” due in theaters in 2019. After a 14-year hiatus, Pixar’s animated superhero family is coming out of retirement. “Incredibles 2,” the follow-up to the 2004 hit, arrives in theaters this month. With director Brad Bird and most of the original voice cast returning for the sequel, this one should be too good to miss.

The original film follows Bob Parr (voice of Craig T. Nelson) and his superpowered family at a time when superheroes are out of favor. Instead of catching crooks, Bob works as a claims adjuster for an insurance agency, fighting daily battles with numbers. Offered a chance to get back into action, Bob leaps at the opportunity, but soon finds himself in a very deadly predicament.

Leveraging the family dynamic in “The Fantastic Four” and “The Avengers” comic books, “The Incredibles” focuses on Bob, wife Helen (Holly Hunter) and their children, Violet (Sarah Vowell), Dash (Spencer Fox) and little Jack Jack (Eli Fucile) as they deal with their situation. When Bob gets into trouble, though, his family comes to the rescue, creating a team that could make superheroes popular again.

tity as Elastigirl, Helen battles crime and shows how “supers” can be good for the community.

Meanwhile, husband Bob takes care of the house and watches after Jack Jack. Unfortunately, the toddler has been blessed with multiple powers that sometimes appear at the most inconvenient of times.

There’s also evident friction between Mr. and Mrs. Parr as she gets the publicity while he handles domestic chores. Helen’s new job comes with some nifty perks, but her work takes her away from the family.

The original film has a solid fan base and the sequel already has received some glowing reviews. There’s been talk, however, of moviegoer’s suffering “superhero fatigue,” especially with “Avengers: Infinity War” and its ensemble cast. Still, the Parr family is in a class by itself and the sequel is sure to be a crowd pleaser.

“Incredibles 2,” rated PG, opens in theaters on Friday, June 15.

Born and raised in South St. Louis, Steve Bryan is now based in Anaheim, California, and has been allowed access to movie and television sets to see actors and directors at work. Though his writing has taken him far from St. Louis, Steve is, at heart, still the same wide-eyed kid who spent countless hours watching classic movies at neighborhood theaters.

emember back in the day when it was harmful to feed ducks bread because they would develop severe mind-altering yeast infections?

The reports on the evening news were grim to say the least.

We’d see gangs or should I say, gaggles, of geese armed with sharp branches looting convenience stores, grabbing hot dog buns, Ding Dongs and Twinkies or whatever else their yeast-addicted bills could nab onto. Then they’d continue the mayhem by buzzing over bakeries, feathers flying and snatching loaves and breadsticks leaving the place in a crumby shambles.

Remember?

Ya, neither do I. But today for some odd, newly discovered reason, bread is wreaking havoc on the bird population.

We typically take the grandkids down to the local duck pond, where for years the same group of dependent ducks have been gathering to enjoy a free meal courtesy of the community kids.

I know they’re the same ones because George WashingDuck has been a member of this group forever. We call him that because he has a funny silky white pompadour atop his head much like the first president’s. Like most ducks, he has no teeth, which would qualify him for a set of wooden ones, thus completing the total George transformation.

But on one of these outings we were faced with a sign telling us not to feed the waterfowl because by doing so we were hastening the Duck Apocalypse.

Now we’re not prepared like most people.

When on a whim we decide to feed the feathered floaties, we reach for a plastic bag of day old death. Do others responsibly reach for their handy bag of Purina special-diet wild duck and goose pellets, fortified with the daily required nutritional additives to supplement pond slime, moss and gnat intake--as required by the Park Rangers Association (a.k.a. the fun-sucking bureaucrats in Washington)?

I think they do not!

Come on. It’s not like we’re feeding the world’s ducks and endangering critical migratory flight patterns. We’re feeding a few of the locals who have been around since George’s wooden teeth.

Question: If bread is so detrimental to fowl, then why is it encouraged to stuff gobs of it into the cavities of turkeys at Thanksgiving?

Washington: Common sense not included.
