By Charlotte Beard According to July 2018 Census Bureau data, there is a population of 28,911 identified as Latino/Hispanic in St. Louis County with 1,589 of that population being in Florissant alone. One of The Hispanic Festival, Inc. (HFI) missions is to help increase regional awareness of the cultural contributions made

by Hispanics in the various arts.

For 17 years now, the group led by Haniny Hillberg, a native Bolivian and active member in the Hispanic community, has aimed to carry out that mission by hosting Fiesta in Florissant, one of its two annual Hispanic festivals. Fiesta in Florissant, a free event to the

public, will take place at the Knights of Columbus Park, 50 Rue Saint Francois St, located near the corner of Lindbergh and Washington in Florissant. The event will take place Saturday, June 22 from 10 a.m. to 10 p.m. and Sunday, June 23 from 11 a.m. to 9 p.m.

“We’re kicking off the morning with a Zumba class,” stated Bender. “We will have

dancers throughout the day – Mexican and Columbian dancers. We will have a Brazilian band a little earlier in the day (followed by) a Latin Caribbean band.”

HFI states this year attendees can expect to see dances that involve salsa, bachata, cumbia and flamenco. The dancers will be from various countries including Venezuela, Colombia and Mexico. Sunday at 2 p.m., attendees can expect a new edition to this year’s line-up – “Viva la Flor” Selena Tribute. The show will commemorate 25 years since her last concert.

“We have a local band, (Tropical Mood), who put together two sets of all of Selena’s songs. Selena was Como la flor (like the flower). She liked white roses, so we’re handing out about 100 long stem white roses. We have an artist coming to do a portrait of Selena during the two-hour performance and some Selena-inspired drinks. It’s just something new we’re doing this year that we’re really excited about.”

The Seventh Annual Miss Chiquita Bonita Contest will take place at 3 p.m. and the Fourth Annual Quinceanera Show will be at 4 p.m. The latter show will feature formal dresses and reenactments of the Hispanic tradition.

Both days of the festival, children will be able to enjoy folk arts and crafts, the Los Niños Kids Corner with piñatas, pony rides, inflatable rides, face painting and Hispanic hands-on crafts. Attendees can purchase a variety of Latin and South American foods such as tamales, tacos and empanadas. Beverages and water will also be available for purchase.

In addition to the festivities and food, HFI is ensuring that the event serves to connect the public with the programs and services of cul-

tural organizations and community services.

Consumers and catastrophes guide available This year, spring in Missouri has ushered in much more than sunny skies, extended daylight and warmer temperatures. Missourians have faced numerous severe weather systems resulting in thunderstorms, tornadoes and flooding.

Although we can’t control the weather, we can maximize our efforts to prepare for when spring days turn dark.

The Missouri Public Service Commission’s (MPSC) website features a free Consumers and Catastrophes Guide to assist consumers and other stakeholders as they prepare for and respond to weather emergencies. Some of the highlighted emergencies include: • Cold Waves/Ice Storms • Droughts • Earthquakes • Extreme Heat and Heatwaves • Floods • Tornadoes The guide can be accessed here https:// psc.mo.gov/ and is available in two places on the MPSC homepage. The first location is in the web wheel box in the center of the page. In addition, each month the

Agency Notice will highlight a different topic from the guide in red. Consumers are welcome to print and distribute the guide as needed.

This guide is distinguishable from other emergency preparation resources in that it focuses on the impact weather emergencies have on utilities. The guide is organized by emergency type and each section includes easy-to-follow checklists advising consumers on what to do before, during, and after a particular emergency. The guide’s appendices offer additional resources including: • Importance of shutting off and unplugging utilities • Food safety • Emergency alerts and warnings • Emergency plans for pets • Emergency preparation tips for travelers • Emergency Supply Kit Essentials Consumers are encouraged to consult with their specific utility company regarding guidance for shutting off their utilities in emergency situations. Consumers should also contact their insur-

ance agent to confirm their policy coverage and determine what documentation is needed in the event of an emergency.

Commissioner Maida Coleman was appointed to the Missouri Public Service Commission by Governor Jay Nixon, effective Aug.10, 2015. She was unanimously confirmed by the Missouri State Senate on Jan. 21.

Prior to her appointment, Commissioner Coleman was the Director of the Office of Community Engagement. From 2001 until 2009, Commissioner Coleman served first as a State Representative and then as State Senator from St. Louis, becoming the first African-American woman in state history to serve as Senate Minority Leader. Coleman has a B.A. in Journalism from Lincoln University in Jefferson City and was awarded a Doctor of Humane Letters Degree from Harris-Stowe State University in St. Louis in 2008. A native of Sikeston, Missouri, Coleman lives in St. Louis.

Clean Air Partnership reminds area residents to reduce transportation footprint during summer Memorial Day marked the unofficial start of summer vacation season with a record number of drivers hitting the roads for the long holiday weekend. Families across the U.S. are gearing up for another season of travel and nearly 100 million Americans are planning to take a vacation this summer, according to the latest AAA travel survey. Whether your summer plans include a tropical getaway or cross-country road trip, it is important to keep in mind that traveling can negatively impact the environment.

“Fortunately, there are a variety of ways that area residents can reduce their environmental impact by making a few small changes to the way that we travel,” said Susannah Fuchs, Director, Clean Air for the American Lung Association in Missouri. “Each one of these choices makes a small difference in the big picture, but collectively, becoming more conscious about greening your travels can have a huge impact on the environment.”

With that in mind, the Clean Air Partnership suggests just a few of the many ways you can reduce your transportation footprint this summer to help improve the region’s air quality: • Travel Light – Greener travel starts before we even leave the house. The more weight trains, planes, and automobiles have to carry, the more fuel they use, and the more harmful greenhouse gases are emitted into the atmosphere. As a result, these emissions have a negative impact on the climate – including worsened air quality – that pose many threats to human health. Be conscious of how much you are packing to lighten the load and help keep the air quality in healthy ranges.

• Turn Off and Unplug – While you may feel more comfortable leaving on a light or two in your absence, that doesn’t mean that you have to leave computers, tablets and other electrical devices on that still use electricity when plugged in, even though they may be idle. Do a

walk-through of your home before you leave to turn off and unplug any unnecessary electronics because energy production is a key source of air pollution. Doing so will help clean the air by reducing harmful emissions.

• Choose to Travel by Bus or Train – If possible, consider traveling by bus or train to your destination. These are the greenest options and can offer a certain level of convenience, particularly if the weather and roads are bad along your travel route. If you must fly, check to see if you can get an affordable nonstop flight to help improve the air quality by cutting back on carbon emissions that come from takeoff and landing.

Buses, trains, hybrid cars, and coach seats on narrow jets weigh in with the smallest carbon footprints.

• Properly Maintain Your Vehicle – If you are traveling by your own personal vehicle, routine maintenance steps like checking engine performance, keeping tires properly inflated, replacing air filters and changing oil regularly are all ways to help reduce emissions and fuel consumption, saving money at the pump and cleaning the air.

Following the speed limit also saves fuel and prevents unnecessary air pollution.

• Make Your Stay a Greener One – If your travel plans include staying at a hotel, consider some simple practices to minimize energy use during your trip like taking short showers, turning off any lights or electronics before leaving the room, keeping the thermostat at a reasonable temperature, and reusing sheets and towels instead of having them washed and changed every day. Otherwise, plan on staying with friends or family to cut back on cost and reduce energy use.

Operation Food Search launches Summer Food Service Program

On June 3, Operation Food Search (OFS) hosted a Summer Food Service Program (SFSP) launch celebration at OFS’s headquarters. The event was an opportunity for state and local officials as well as stakeholders to learn about how the SFSP supports and acts as a benefit to the youths in the surrounding area.

OFS was founded in 1981 and is a hunger relief organization that aims to provide not only food but also education, in an effort to end childhood hunger. The St. Louis OFS location this year has expanded its territory to now include the St. Charles County library system in addition to the St. Louis territory it covers.

“We are increasing the areas we serve starting with the surrounding counties of St. Louis and plan on further expanding from there,” said Director of Child Nutrition Programs Brian Wieher.

“The library system is a fantastic partnership for us because they have some sort of structure programing during the day. Giving us the ability to provide the food and they can serve it at their frequency, meeting the needs of their community.

Libraries are also a known place where it is safe and comfortable, where kids can go get books and education in the summer time.”

Executive Director Kristen Wild explained that in 2012 OFS was at one location in St. Louis serving around 5,000 meals. This year they are now at 60 locations hoping to serve 100,000 meals. OFS is teaming up with 16 AmeriCorp leaders this summer who along with serving meals will provide educational interaction and entertaining activities.

The summer meal program is open to youths 18 years and younger, providing not only nutritious meals but also providing a variety of games, arts, crafts and STEM projects. OFS will serve meals Monday through Friday between 11:30 a.m. and 5:30 p.m. at mobile and stationary locations. The program will run through Aug. 9.

support blood supply after Memorial Day and all summer long

By Patricia Dillon Most look forward to the end of the school year and summer vacation, but it does mean a challenge for the local blood supply. That’s because Mississippi Valley Regional Blood Center’s schedule of high school and college blood drives comes to an end, leading to a decrease in the overall rate of blood donation, by as much as 20 percent.

In response, MVRBC will thank donors who support the blood supply during the summer months with a voucher to redeem for a $10 gift card. The Blood Center’s summer promotion began on Memorial Day and continues through Sept.

Amanda Hess, Director, Donor and Public Relations, says it will be critical to schedule additional donations after Memorial Day Weekend and all summer long.

“We may see fewer donors during the summer, but the hospitals we serve never take a day off,” said Hess. “It’s our job to provide a steady blood supply even during holidays, and that’s why we’re

asking donors of all blood types to schedule appointments right away and asking sponsor groups to host additional blood drives this summer.”

Blood donations are often used to help treat patients with cancer, patients needing surgery, and victims of trauma. Kelsey Gaby, a local nursing student, received multiple blood transfusions after suffering serious injuries in a car accident at age 16.

“Blood donors helped save my life,” says Gaby.

“You never know when someone might need a lifesaving blood transfusion. That’s why I encourage everyone who can give blood to please consider donating.” Having recovered from her injuries after multiple surgeries and a lengthy process of rehabilitation, Gaby is now a college student pursuing a career in nursing.

MVRBC is the provider to 22 hospitals across the St. Louis Metropolitan Region, including SSM Health Cardinal Glennon Children’s Hos-

Hazelwood Community Enrichment Commission presents Community Service Award Members of Hazelwood’s Community Enrichment Commission (CEC) presented Pat Jackson with the Community Service Award recently during their May meeting. CEC Chairwoman Helena Smith did the honors of giving her the award in front of her family and the commission.

The Community Service Award recognizes individuals and businesses that make positive contributions to the city. Actions recognized but not limited to the following: generous donations of time, products or services; clean-up campaigns; exceptional customer services; and providing assistance to those in need.

Any individual may be nominated as long as the city of Hazelwood residents are beneficiaries of the contribution. Nominations can be submitted to the Community Enrichment Commission at the Hazelwood Community Center. Pat has also been very active with the city’s “Miss Hazelwood Program” when it was a part of the annual Harvestfest event, according to former Council member Patricia Robin, a close friend.

“Pat would go around to the different high schools in the area and help recruit candidates for each pageant. My daughter, Rachel, was Miss Hazelwood 2009, and it was a wonderful experience for her,” said Robin.

Jackson’s other contributions to the community include serving on C.E.R.T. (Community Emergency Response Team), a program offered through the Hazelwood Fire Department, and donating her time to the Meals On Wheels program.

“It gives me a good feeling to see the smiles and receive hugs from the people I deliver meals to on a regular basis. I enjoy doing it tremendously,” said Jackson.

Hazelwood’s 16th Annual Community Art Fair promotes the creative talent of local artists The Community Enrichment Commission hosted its 16th Annual Community Art Fair on June 1 at the Hazelwood Community Center. This event enabled 34 artists from around the St. Louis area to showcase their creative talents to the public.

The artists were age 16 and over and displayed their paintings and drawings which were done in oil, watercolor, acrylic, charcoal, pastels, pencil or mixed media. No sculptures, photos or computer generated media were accepted.

Cardinals sign Rascal’s player The defending West Division champion River City Rascals baseball club plays in the Frontier League with home games at the friendly confines of the CarShield Field in O’Fallon.

The team’s right-handed pitcher Dalton Roach has had his contract purchased by the St. Louis Cardinals.

Roach, in his second season with the team, was one of the top pitchers in the Frontier League this season. He was the second Rascals player acquired by a major league organization this week, as Jackson Sigman was signed by the Milwaukee Brewers on Wednesday, more to follow on that acquisition.

Roach was 4-0 through with a 1.13 ERA through five starts in 2019, registering 37 strikeouts and only six walks in 32 total innings of work. * Next page in life Brewers sign Rascal’s player Rascal’s closer Jackson Sigman has had his contract purchased by the Milwaukee Brewers.

Sigman becomes the first Rascals player acquired by a major league organization this season, and the first in-season pick-up since 2017, when outfielder Jimmy Kerrigan was inked by the Minnesota Twins. He will report to the (RK) Rocky Mountain Vibes of the Pioneer League.

“I’m thrilled for Sigman and this opportunity for his career,” said Rascals manager Steve Brook. “I wish him the best in his future with the Brewers.”

Sigman recorded seven saves, leading the Frontier League in the category. The 24-year old made 11 appearances for the Rascals this season, his second year with the club.

In 11 2/3 innings, he recorded 18 strikeouts and only four walks, while amassing a 0.77 ERA. * Enjoy the ‘Bigs’ St. Louis Blues go from last place to winning the Stanley Cup I normally write about local sports but I

would be remiss if I didn’t give a quick shout out to the best hockey team in the NHL this year.

Hockey films to watch post-Stanley Cup

Born and raised in South St. Louis, Steve Bryan is now based in Anaheim, California, and has been allowed access to movie and television sets to see actors and directors at work. Though his writing has taken him far from St. Louis, Steve is, at heart, still the same wide-eyed kid who spent countless hours watching classic movies at neighborhood theaters.

atching the Blues hoist the Stanley Cup on TV was worth a 49-year wait. Their win in Game 7 marked the end of an incredible journey and the beginning of a new chapter for the hockey franchise. Given the intensity of the playoffs and the unwavering loyalty of superfan Laila Anderson, their victory has all the makings of a TV-movie.

Even if a film never materializes, there are several hockey films to watch in the afterglow of the Stanley Cup victory. “Mystery, Alaska,” for instance, is an underappreciated 1999 film about a town that is crazy about hockey. Russell Crowe stars as John Photo courtesy Hollywood Pictures Biebe, Mystery’s sheriff who is part of the weekly hockey game on a frozen pond. After the town is featured in “Sports Illustrated,” the local players are invited to play an exhibition game against the New York Rangers.

Watching the Blues celebrate after Game 7 brought to mind “Miracle,” the true story of the 1980 U.S. Olympic Hockey Team’s victory over their Russian opponents. Kurt Russell plays Herb Brooks, a player turned coach who handpicked his players from college teams. The film showed Brooks training style and the exciting moments leading up to an unexpected victory.

Years before the Walt Disney Studios became the home of the Marvel Cinematic Universe, they released a little sports film called

“The Mighty Ducks” in 1992. Surprisingly charming and engaging, the sports comedy tells the story of Gordon Bombay (Emilio Estevez), an attorney who is arrested for drunk driving. Sentenced to community service, Bombay serves his time as the coach of a peewee hockey team.

Bombay is not enthused about his community service, and flashbacks show why he has bad feelings about hockey. It’s interesting to note that the young cast includes Joshua Jackson, who became widely known as Pacey on the “Dawson’s Creek” TV series. A very young Jussie Smollett also is in the cast as Terry Hall, one of the players. The “Mighty Ducks” was followed by two sequels, but these couldn’t capture the charm of the original.

In 1986, Rob Lowe played the title role in “Youngblood,” a coming-of-age hockey film. Despite his father’s objections, Dean Youngblood travels to Canada to try out for a team. He has great skill on the ice, but he lacks the toughness of other players. Dean returns home and gets some unexpected help from his dad. Keanu Reeves and Patrick Swayze also round out the cast of this enjoyable sports film.

These films may help fill the gap until it’s time for hockey season.

Congratulations to the Blues once again for finally bringing Lord Stanley’s cup to St. Louis.

‘Yeggs’ is a comic series about Robert and Bill, two rabbits who have opened their own egg franchise in the Midwest (St. Louis area). We follow their day to day lives, watching as they go about the hectic task of preparing for their one big day every year. Along the way they have adventures filled with fun, comic doings and pathos.

Moore On Life Remember back in the day when stores were so small you could see from one end of the shop to the other? There was no such thing as getting lost and sending out search parties to locate your loved ones.

Not so anymore. Today’s megastores have their own interstates. And you better stay together in one of these beasts because if you get separated it could be days before you find each other again.

The other day my husband took me along to one of these brick and mortar metropolises. I don’t know why. All we needed was a paint brush and a bag of birdseed.

You’d think that would be an in-and-out kind of shopping deal, but not so much. Once you enter the big box store there are quadrants and sectors and sections within units with their own separate zip codes and laws and flags and run by their own mayors.

I made the mistake of separating from my husband. I told him I’d get my seed and meet up with him; 45 minutes later I was wandering the perimeter trying to catch a glimpse of a bearded, balding, middle-aged man. I thought I found him 14 times.

I guess balding and bearded is the style for middle-aged men.

Finally, a compassionate clerk noticed that I was in despair. It might have been because I climbed the rafters two stories up and shouted, “Help! Can anybody hear me? Send Search and Rescue…and a Dr. Pepper! I’m dying of thirst up here! Preferably with ice!”

“Ma’am, can I help you find something?”

“Yes. My husband!”

“Can you describe him?”

“He’s balding, bearded and middle-aged.”

“Oh, he’s in lumber…and plumbing…and hardware…and gardening…and electrical….and…”

“Never mind.”

“Well, does he have his cellphone with him?”

“Yes,” I said, “but I’ve already tried calling him.
