10th Annual Summer Skate/BMX Competition lets daredevils strut their stuff By Brett Auten High-flying acrobatics, creative leaps and a daredevils’ nerve; that and more will be on display at the 10th Annual Summer Skate/BMX Competition in Hazelwood. In cooperation with Casey Otto of P9 Entertainment, the Hazelwood Parks and Recreation Division the event is slated to be held at the city of Hazelwood’s Skate/BMX Park located behind the Community Center in White Birch Park, 1186 Teson Road. “It hasn’t always been easy,” Otto said. “There have been times we’ve had to pick it up and move it to Belleville because of rain in Hazelwood because the kids wanted. We have found a way to make it happen.” While BMX and skateboarding doesn’t get the summer notoriety of baseball there is no questioning both the physical skill to pull such maneuvers off but also the tried and true nose to the grindstone approach to drilling new routines over and over again. “Each year it seems to get a good turnout and competitors always look forward to it when it comes around

every year,” Tim Davidson, Hazelwood Communications Manager said. “This takes some athleticism to do some of these concepts.” The public is encouraged to come out, free of charge, and watch BMX riders and skateboarders match and eclipse each other in a competition format that will see cash prizes awarded to winners of each category. For the wanna-be Tony Hawks or those aspire to be the star of the XGames who are curious to see if what they can pull off in front of their friends at the park will work under the pressure of competition, this event is tailormade for them. For just a $7 entry fee they can enter any of the two separate competitions for BMX riders and skateboarders. Registration is only available at the event. Participants can sign-up to compete in the Age 15 & Under or Age 16-and-over categories. You can expect anywhere from 30 to 50 competitors with a varying number of participants in each category. The older kids tend to lean toward BMX while the younger guys tend toward the skateboard.

Otto launched P9 Entertainment, which puts on events like this in across the region, after he closed his skate park at the Mills Mall. “Pretty much everyone is in this sport are truists and are in it for fun and a See FLYING HIGH page 2
