By Brett Auten There will some things old, some things new, and plenty of things that go boom. The 41st Annual Ferguson Independence Day Festival will kick off early on July 4 at January Wabash Memorial Park and will close late into the evening. “We are one of the oldest independent celebrations in the state,” Nancy Whitener, the Recreation Specialist for the city of Ferguson said. “We have been continuous for 41 years. All of our activities, other than the fireworks, are paid for through fundraising. Right after the Fourth we begin working toward next year.” The theme of this year’s festival is “Childhood Heroes” and beginning at 1 p.m. characters like Disney’s Elsa and Anna (from Frozen), Cinderella, Beauty and the Beast’s Belle and Captain America just to name a few will be roaming the park and available for photos But first and foremost things get started with the annual parade that begins at 10 a.m. and starts at Paul Ave. and S. Florissant Road. Of course, all of the fair/festival-type food (snow cones, bratwursts, funnel

cakes, popcorn and BBQ) and game booths that will be available beginning at noon. During the day there will be plenty to keep the kiddos busy. “The pig races are loved by all ages,” Whitener said. “It’s by far are most exciting event. It’s just fun watching them run the course. From babies to pot bellies we will have it all.” A new addition this year will be the Lego Experience from 1 - 7 p.m. Lego sets will be available and local police and fire personnel will be available to help in the construction. As night falls out will come another new addition to this year’s lineup, a fire performer will eat, juggle and breathe fire for those looking for a little heat. What’s a party without music? At the bandshell area, Miss Jubilee and Humdingers will perform some vintage jazz and swing numbers from 2 - 5 p.m. Miss Jubilee has been entertaining audiences around St. Louis and beyond since the beginning of 2007 with their exciting blend of authentic jazz, swing, and rhythm & blues spanning the 1920’s-1950’s. Fronted by the high energy female vocalist and backed up by a horn-fueled rhythm section,

Miss Jubilee is a favorite for those who enjoy uplifting and energetic music. Streetbeat will take the stage at 6 p.m., and are slated for a three-hour set.
