Missouri Department of Transportation’s $278 million I-270 North project remains on schedule in spite of coronavirus pandemic

By Charlotte Beard Though some pre-scheduled events or projects for the year 2020 had to be cancelled or postponed due to the coronavirus crisis, the Missouri Department of Transportation’s (MoDOT) 2019 announcement of the $278 million I-270 North project is still moving along.

According to MoDOT the I-270 North Design Build Project (awarded to Millstone Weber) will bring improvements along the interstate from McDonnell Boulevard to Bellefontaine Road. The project runs along I-270 from I-70 on the west to west of River-

view Drive. MoDOT states that this project “will improve safety and reliability within the I-270 corridor, link communities, and enhance traffic operations so the public has a durable and maintainable transportation network.”

In March MoDOT changed its previously scheduled open house public hearing to a virtual public meeting on its project website. The virtual meeting offered the opportunity to obtain updated information on the project and provide comments.

On April 20, construction began with the

closing of the eastbound I-270 off ramp to Washington and Elizabeth. After the oneand-a-half-year construction period, the new south outer road will connect New Florissant Road and Elizabeth Avenue.

Though it was previously announced that I-270 near Old Halls Ferry Road would close June 12 for demolition of the bridge that ran over the interstate, some travelers were surprised by the forced detour of traffic off the highway prior to early evening demolition. The entrance and exit ramps to the interstate near the area were reopened after the weekend.

New passage over the interstate is expected to be completed by Sept. 23. For those who would normally travel over the bridge, southbound Old Halls Ferry Road commuters can turn right onto Dunn Road, travel to New Halls Ferry Road, turn left onto New Halls Ferry Road and travel south on New Halls Ferry Road to the Old Halls Ferry Road/New Halls Ferry Road split. Northbound commuters will detour via the Old Halls Ferry Road/New Halls Ferry Road split, traveling north on New Halls Ferry Road to Dunn Road, turn right onto Dunn Road, travel to Old Halls Ferry Road and turn left onto northbound Old Halls Ferry Road. For access to eastbound I-270, southbound Old Halls Ferry Road commuters can turn right onto Dunn Road, travel to

New Halls Ferry Road, turn left onto New Halls Ferry Road, travel south on New Halls Ferry Road, turn right onto Pershall Road, travel to West Florissant Road, turn right onto West Florissant Road and turn right onto entrance ramp to eastbound I-270.

The most recent ramp closure (eastbound I-270 entrance at S New Florissant Road) was announced by MoDOT for June 29 and is expected to last for three months. MoDOT states that during this time commuters to the entrance ramp will detour from New Florissant Road onto eastbound Dunn Road. They can travel to Washington Street/N. Elizabeth Avenue; turn right onto Washington Street/N. Elizabeth Avenue, travel over I-270 and turn left onto the entrance ramp to eastbound I-270.

MoDOT is expected to announce four additional closures for the project this year. According to the project site’s schedule, in August or September closure will take place for Washington/Elizabeth over I-270 for three months and the I-270 eastbound entrance ramp from Old Halls Ferry for two weeks. In November there are plans to close the Pershall and Elizabeth intersection and the Dunn and Elizabeth intersection each for three weeks.

Commuters are encouraged by MoDOT to visit the project website at http://www.i270north.org to hear narrated detour information and to learn more about the specifics of the project.

Your participation in the 2020 Census really counts You really do count when it comes to participating in the 2020 Census. It’s happening right now and it’s not too late to complete the census for your household. It’s our nation’s one shot every 10 years at getting an accurate picture of who lives here, and the only attempt we make to count and collect information about everyone in the country.

This also is our chance to make sure our hard-earned tax dollars make their way back to Missouri.

Every year, billions of dollars in federal funding go to fire departments, schools, roads, hospitals and other resources based on census data. The information that the census collects will help determine how more than $675 billion worth of federal funding is distributed to states and communities each year.

The census is important in many other ways, including decision making at all levels of government; drawing federal, state and local legislative districts; and attracting new businesses to state and local areas.

Lawmakers, business owners, teachers and many others use the data to provide daily services, products and support for you and your community.

You may not realize that census data gathered is used in a number of high-stakes applications. For example, it’s used to divide the 435 seats in the U.S. House of Representatives among the 50 states. It also guides an estimated $1.5 trillion in federal funding, so

a fair and accurate census every 10 years is essential to the equitable distribution of federal funding and political power, and it’s essential for us to make smart decisions about how to solve social problems.

Census data influence a number of measures like the poverty level, for example, that guide the distribution of federal funds and determine if government program providers are eligible for funding and which individuals are eligible for programs. Federal money guided by census data helps fund health-related programs like Medicare and Medicaid, the Children’s Health Insurance Program (CHIP), the Supplemental Nutrition Assistance Program (SNAP) and the Special Supplemental Nutrition Program for Women Infants and Children (WIC), as well as funding community health centers – making the need for accurate representation more crucial.

The data also has a large impact on the assessment of certain health programs like the Rural Health Program that utilizes census data to define non-urbanized areas and medically underserved community populations. These areas are classified for the most part based on the census counts.

Researchers and government officials also look to census data to understand which communities are most vulnerable to the impacts of climate change. People of color and low-income communities are some of the communities hit hardest by the climate

crisis, and accurate census data are needed to ensure environmental policies, practices and strategies are equitably developed and implemented.

For every adult and every child that is not counted, Missouri loses an estimated $1,300 in federal dollars. That adds up to $13,000 per person over the next 10 years. In 2010, Missouri lost a congressional seat and hundreds of millions of dollars in federal funding. Illinois is predicted to lose at least one congressional seat, illustrating why everyone must be counted to ensure the correct representation.

With all this in mind, it’s important now more than ever for all of us to be counted and complete the census either online at my2020census.gov and even use your mobile device, or by phone or by mail. Hall of Fame wide receiver Isaac Bruce hosts free football clinic for kids More than 500 youth from the St. Louis area will have the opportunity to join former St. Louis Rams wide receiver and newly elected Hall of Famer Isaac Bruce for a free football clinic at the former Rams Park on July 25.

This free, non-contact clinic provides youth the opportunity to work on their football skills, sportsmanship and teamwork skills, while building self-esteem both on and off the field. Each participant will receive a T-shirt and refreshments as well as have the opportunity to meet Bruce.

Registration is open to the public. Space is limited to the first 250 youth in each of the two sessions (8-10 years from 9-11 a.m. and 11-13 years from 12-2 p.m.). To register, visit www.IsaacBruce.org.

Isaac epitomizes greatness both on and off

the field. Between the lines, the Hall of Fame wide receiver gained more than 15,000 receiving yards, more than 1,000 receptions, and scored 91 touchdowns during his 14 seasons with the Rams and two seasons with the 49ers. He retired as No. 2 all-time on the NFL Receiving Yards list and No. 5 on the NFL Receptions list. His number 80 was retired by the Rams in 2010 and he was elected to the Pro Football Hall of Fame in 2020.

He launched the Isaac Bruce Foundation in 2006 which focuses on health, wellness, nutrition, fitness and education. Through the foundation, Isaac reaches out to youth and teaches them at an early age the importance of a healthy lifestyle with a focus on education.

More than 7,500 kids have participated in the IBF’s free football clinics since 2007. Bruce is committed to continuing to make an impact in St. Louis through the foundation and is excited to partner with Lou Fusz Athletics to continue offering the free clinic.

Hazelwood opens White Birch Bay Aquatic Center with social distancing in place Hazelwood opened the White Birch Bay Aquatic Center for a modified pool season on June 25. The center will be open Thursday-Sunday from noon to 7 p.m., with swims sessions from noon to 3 p.m. and 4 to 7 p.m., and cleaning and sanitizing the facility from 3 to 4 p.m.

The concessions stand will offer a limited menu. No outside food or drink is allowed. Reduced capacities, based on state and county guidelines, allow for 150 patrons per session and no groups larger than six and all chair groupings will be six feet apart.

Healthworks! Kids’ Museum launches new virtual classroom for educators, children and families HealthWorks! Kids’ Museum St. Louis debuted its new Virtual Classroom, a tremendous resource for educators and families interested in helping area children learn more about the many things they can do to protect and improve their health from the safety of their homes.

The project is supported by a $200,000 grant that HealthWorks received from Delta Dental of Missouri earlier this year to help continue to fund the facility’s unique programming aimed at educating and inspiring children and families to make positive oral and overall health choices. Delta Dental of Missouri, the state’s leading dental benefits company, is deeply committed to advancing oral health and overall health for individuals, children and families in the communities it serves and has been a long-time supporter of Healthworks and its mission.

HealthWorks recently had to temporarily close its physical location due to the COVID-19 pandemic, but recognizing the important role the museum plays as a partner for area educators and parents, leadership decided to accelerate the planned Virtual Classroom

project so it could continue to have a positive impact.

With a portion of the funding from Delta Dental, and additional support from the Jefferson Foundation and Dana Brown Charitable Trust, HealthWorks launched the new virtual classroom as a way to continue to educate children and their caregivers while adhering to current social distancing requirements. With a few short clicks, children and family members can easily access videos, activities, games and even books on a variety of health-related subjects, including anatomy, hygiene, nutrition, physical activity, oral health, sleep, mental and emotional health and health careers. “We can’t think of a better time to launch our Interactive Classroom than right now given that we can’t welcome visitors to the museum itself and so many children are at home looking for activities to engage them,” said Shannon Laine, president and CEO of HealthWorks!

HealthWorks also plans to use additional funding from the Delta Dental grant to build and maintain interactive exhibits at the museum, which is eager to reopen when deemed safe to do so. Benefiting exhibits include the Giant Teeth, Dental Office, Mouth Theatre, Oral Health Learning Theatre, Grossology Sniff Sniff, Farmer’s Market, Interactive Dude’s Face and Tobacco exhibits. These exhibits reinforce oral health habits and teach necessary skills for proper oral health, providing kids with the tools to demonstrate proper brushing technique, identify the cause of bad breath, see the effects of tobacco use and more.

The museum will also leverage the donation to invest in oral health tools for 6,000 visiting children to take care of their smiles at home and provide access to valuable oral health information. Furthermore, 8,000 children and caregivers will now be able to participate in oral health-specific learning theatre programs during their visit once the museum is back open. The grant funding also provided for dental screenings, oral health goodie bags and dental resources to more than 350 children and caregivers that participated in the Magical Smiles Oral Health Event that was held on Feb. 8.

“Oral health education is necessary to a child’s development, and we are proud to be able to supply children with important health lessons they can apply to their daily lives,” said Laine.

“We are grateful for the generous support from Delta Dental of Missouri and our other wonderful supporters, and we look forward to continuing to educate children and caregivers about their health in fun, interactive ways and provide them with resources they otherwise may not have had access to.”

Inspired by 38 years of successfully educating children and families on the importance of oral health, Delta Dental Health Theatre expanded and transitioned into HealthWorks in 2016. Since then, the organization has continued to support the museum in its efforts toward improving the lives and health of children and caregivers throughout the St. Louis region.

Local Author Spotlight: Kip Fechner and Janis Dillon Adorable dogs sincerely ask the reader to “Please Love Me Like I Love You” in this little one’s guide to love and kindness toward their pet dog. A dog exclaims “Please don’t pull my ears!

That hurts! Oh My!” Then the same dog explains further “Hearing your voice is so special to me, like a sweet lullaby.” There are different dogs that take the reader through so many actions that could hurt them and then respond with an unconditional love answer. There is also a bonus feature of finding a heart on every page – some are obvious and some hearts are hidden.

When Ballwin resident Kip Fechner, became a grandmother, she revisited raising kids. Her active granddaughter was just too rough with her dog and her own dog. She was terrified that she would be bitten. Kip searched for a book about kindness to pets and found nothing specific for her grandchild’s age group. That led her to write her own book – Kip is a first-time author.

This book is written for toddlers and younger kids. The book was printed by Advertisers Printing which is her husband’s family company. She and Bill have three grown children, two granddaughters, and a rat terrier, Sheeba.

She recruited her sister Janis Dillon, a talented watercolor artist, to do the illustrations. The cover dachshund was their family pet, Schultz, many years ago when they were kids.

Janis is a retired Elementary School teacher. Her love of art and nature has always been a major influence in her work with young children. She taught for 25 years in the Clayton Public Schools and currently volunteers at her church’s preschool. She enjoys raising monarch butterflies each summer and continues to enjoy water painting.

Janis lives with her husband, Mike, and their Basset Hound, Ava Mae, in Webster Groves.

Tips for planning a summer family vacation As stay-at-home orders ease, many families are eager to get out of the house and hit the road for a summer trip. However, vacation will most likely look different this year as families looking to get away may stay closer to home and take extra precautions.

Make your summer travel plans safe and successful with these tips.

Destination: Taking a road trip allows you to avoid crowded airports or public transportation hubs and bring your own food and groceries. A drivable destination is still a getaway, and driving typically offers more flexibility and requires less planning. Even if it’s just a trip across the state instead of across the country, picking a destination within driving distance of your home is a chance to break away from everyday surroundings and routine.

Cleanliness: Clean accommodations are always important and may be even more so now.

Many hotels and whole-home vacation rentals, have enhanced cleaning and disinfection guidelines. When selecting a place to stay during your trip, consider whole-home vacation rentals so your family has the privacy of having the entire property to yourselves, and make sure to review the cleaning measures that have been implemented. Measures to look for include cleaning and disinfecting high-touch surfaces, stocking antibacterial soap and sanitizers for guests, building in time between bookings to avoid back-to-back stays and offering minimal contact check-in and check-out options.

Activities: Although many amusement parks, tourist attractions and businesses have re-opened, their hours may be limited and there may be capacity restrictions, so be sure to research requirements for tickets and admission and plan your trip accordingly. Consider accommodations for your trip that include built-in activities for your family, such as a private pool, or opt for less-crowded destinations like mountain cabins or lake houses to enjoy a change of scenery.

Flexible Accommodations: In these uncertain times, much of the travel industry has adjusted cancellation policies to be more accommodating to travelers. In fact, according to a survey of Vrbo travelers, more than 75 percent of respondents are more likely to choose accommodations with flexible cancellation policies when booking their next vacation home. When planning and booking your trip, be sure you clearly understand the cancellation policies. When possible, seek out options that allow you to make changes with minimal or no penalty if circumstances force you to adjust your plans.

A reminder that fireworks are prohibited by law in Florissant Over 200 people go to the emergency room on or near the Fourth of July each year. People die from different fireworks related accidents.

The recent wet summers prevented an increase in the potential of fireworks induced fires, but we may not be as fortunate in the future. Small children and family pets can be terrorized by fireworks.

According to the Florissant Police Department, the city of Florissant and the nation has

experienced a noticeable increase in the amount and size of the pyrotechnics that individuals are using near the Fourth of July and New Year’s Eve which has resulted in complaints of peace disturbance.

A more disturbing trend is the national increase in the discharge of fire arms for the Fourth of July and New Year’s.

What goes up must come down and spent bullets can kill or maim a child, adult or pet and cause

expensive property damage. Discharging firearms is always illegal and violators will be prosecuted to the fullest extent of the law.

The sale, possession and use of fireworks are prohibited by law in section 215.020 of the Florissant City Code which was enacted by the city council several decades ago. This administration has placed a renewed priority on enforcement of this ordinance in an effort to prevent death,

injury, fires and disturbance of the peace. Violators will be subject to a fine of up to $1,000.

The public is encouraged to notify the police

department at 314-8317000 of any illegal fireworks or firearms activity.

Also, this year’s fireworks display which is hosted by the city of

Florissant has been cancelled and will be back for next year.

Pedal the Cause announces major event changes, remains inspired to create a world without cancer Pedal the Cause, the region’s largest peer-to-peer fundraising event, is adapting its 2020 bike ride in order to maintain its commitment to fund vital cancer research at Siteman Cancer Center and Siteman Kids at St. Louis Children’s Hospital while prioritizing the safety of its riders, volunteers and supporters.

In 2019, Pedal the Cause celebrated its tenth year with 3,725 riders and spinners, 522 kids, and over 1,100 volunteers working in tandem to raise $4.74

million. This year Pedal the Cause Inspired will take place on Sept. 26 and 27 and offer participants the opportunity to choose their own physical challenge: biking, spinning, running, walking or another activity. Participants will complete these challenges on their own, in small groups, or together with their families throughout the weekend all connected through a livestream Inspirational Program and various interactive opportunities. Pedal the Cause will also offer opportunities to train, fundraise and engage with the community in the weeks and months leading up to the event.

Smoked Hasselback Pineapple with Spiced Turkey Chorizo and Onion

Total time: 2 hours | Servings: 4

Ingredients: 4 cups favorite wood chips water 1 pound 93% lean ground turkey breast 1 small DOLE® red onion, diced 2 tablespoons olive oil 2 teaspoons fresh thyme leaves 2 teaspoons smoked paprika 1 teaspoon ancho chile powder 1 teaspoon ground cumin 1/2 teaspoon kosher salt 1 large Dole Ppineapple, top on, peeled and halved lengthwise chopped fresh cilantro, for garnish (optional) Directions: In large bowl, cover wood chips with water; soak as label directs. Prepare outdoor grill for indirect grilling over medium heat.

In medium bowl, stir turkey, onion, oil, thyme, paprika, chile powder, cumin and salt.

Drain wood chips; place 2 cups in foil boat or pie tin and place on hot grill rack over lit side of grill (place chips directly on coals for charcoal grill). Place pineapple halves, flat side down, on cutting board; cut crosswise slices into pineapple halves, about 1/2 inch apart, cutting only 3/4 of the way through. Place medium bowl upside down; one at a time, place pineapple halves, flat side down, over bowl to separate slits. Fill slits with turkey mixture.

Place pineapple halves, flat side down, on hot grill rack over unlit side of grill; cover and cook 1 hour, 45 minutes, or until turkey mixture is golden brown and internal temperature reaches 170 F, rotating once and adding remaining chips halfway through cooking.

Transfer pineapple halves to cutting board; cut crosswise in half. Serve pineapple garnished with cilantro, if desired.

Legendary director Joel Schumacher leaves behind a cinematic legacy

Born and raised in South St. Louis, Steve Bryan is now based in Anaheim, California, and has been allowed access to movie and television sets to see actors and directors at work. Though his writing has taken him far from St. Louis, Steve is, at heart, still the same wide-eyed kid who spent countless hours watching classic movies at neighborhood theaters.

n June 22, Hollywood legend Joel Schumacher passed away, leaving behind a legacy of great movies and other cinematic contributions. My first exposure to the director was “The Incredible Shrinking Woman,” a 1981 comedic vehicle for Lily Tomlin. In this takeoff of the science fiction classic “The Incredible Shrinking Man,” Tomlin played a woman who, after being exposed to some chemicals, slowly began to shrink in size. Unlike the original, this one was played for laughs.

Schumacher later became one of the influential voices of 1980’s cinema. With “St. Elmo’s Fire,” the director brought together Emilio Estevez, Rob Lowe, Ally Sheedy, Judd Nelson and other young performers to tell the story of college graduates finding their way in the world. Schumacher followed this up with “The Lost Boys,” a darkly comic horror film about a town filled with vampires. In the 1980’s, casts of movies like these were often called “The Brat Pack.”

1990’s “Flatliners” followed a group of medical students who used medical technology to create near death experiences. Kiefer Sutherland, Julia Roberts and Kevin Bacon played three of the students whose experiments with the afterlife had unforeseen consequences. A few years ago, Ellen Page starred in a sequel of

sorts to the original “Flatliners” but it did not have the impact of the original.

Under Schumacher’s direction, Michael Douglas delivered an intense performance in “Falling Down,” a darkly comic look at a man having an unbelievably bad day. Douglas plays William Foster, a divorced man who loses his job. After dealing with traffic issues and frustrating trips to a convenience store and a fast food place, Foster takes out his frustrations in violent ways.

Schumacher gathered a stellar cast for 1995’s “Batman Forever,” one of the most successful films of that year. Here, Val Kilmer played the dual roles of Batman and Bruce Wayne. Coming off a series of successful comedies, Jim Carrey played the Riddler opposite Tommy Lee Jones’ Two-Face. Batman also found an ally in Dick Grayson (Chris O’Donnell), a circus acrobat who became his partner Robin. Nicole Kidman rounded out the cast as Dr. Chase Meridian, a love interest for Bruce Wayne.

Two years later, the director went back to the Batcave for “Batman & Robin,” which was not as well-received. George Clooney put on Batman’s cape and cowl while O’Donnell reprised his role in this sequel. Arnold Schwarzenegger chewed up the scenery as the villainous Mr. Freeze and “Clueless” star Alicia Silverstone played Barbara Wilson, niece of Wayne’s butler Alfred (Michael Gough).

Based on a John Grisham novel, 1996’s “A Time to Kill” paired Matthew McConaughey and Sandra Bullock in an intense courtroom drama. After Carl Lee Hailey (Samuel L. Jackson) is accused of murdering two men who assaulted his daughter, attorney Jake Brigance (McConaughey) agrees to defend him in court. Bullock plays a law student assisting with the case while Kiefer Sutherland was Freddie Lee Cobb, the brother of one of the men Hailey killed.

Moore On Life This pandemic thing has messed up more than just the entire planet.

It’s created panic, anxiety, frustration and tears.

And I’m not just talking about the apocalyptic toilet paper shortage.

There is something far more serious…a sports shortage!

Just ask my husband.

His man cave looks like a ghost town. I recently ventured down there looking for our missing cat.

Tumbleweeds had piled up against the back of his recliner. His big screen had a thick coating of dust covering it. His favorite chair was covered in cobwebs. That’s where I discovered our fat cat nom-noming on something. He hissed at me as I pulled him out from beneath a throw pillow and took away the channel changer, which was embedded in an old slice of cheese and pepperoni pizza.

“Hey, Sweetie!” I hollered. “What the heck’s going on with your man cave? It looks like you’ve abandoned it.”

“Don’t wanna talk about it,” he called back in a dejected voice.

“Is it because you can’t find the remote? I just found it…and your lunch!”

“No…it’s because…” he said as he came in, his voice cracking. “There are no more sports.”

“What? Why?” “COVID has ruined everything. First the toilet paper was taken away, but I adjusted. I learned to make due using those mismatched socks you kept in a laundry basket. Then the meat shortage

came. I learned to eat more vegetables even the gross peas. But this, no football, no basketball, reruns from ten years ago?! This is more than any human can handle.”

“There, there,” I said as I patted his back. “We’ll find something.”

I picked some dried on pizza sauce off from the remote and flipped on the TV. “Just look, there’s a bunch of stuff to choose from. There are guys rolling giant cheese wheels down a steep hill. How fun is that? Then there’s the international rock, paper, scissors championship.

Wow, what about the toe wrestling tournament or we’ve got some hamster race finals… Sweetie?

Where’d you go?”

I guess he needed some alone time. It’s hard watching a grown man cry.
