Cinema St. Louis’ Whitaker St. Louis Filmmakers Showcase has moved online this year due to the COVID-19 pandemic

By Charlotte Beard COVID-19 is not stopping Cinema St. Louis (CSL) from continuing its mission to support local filmmakers by showcasing their work. For the 20th year the nonprofit will host its Whitaker St. Louis Filmmakers Showcase online July 10 -19. The ticketing and online festival is being made possible by

CSL’s partnership with Eventive.

Artistic Director Chris Clark stated that CSL had to reinvent themselves as an arts-presenting organization by moving to a virtual event instead of live theaters. He further stated that initially it was “quite scary.”

“Usually, an exciting part of (the event)

to everyone (is being) gathered in the same space to watch each other’s films and share with family and friends,” stated Clark. “Fortunately, we were able to do (a festival) already (which) we finished just a few days See ‘SHOW’ page 2

The showcase will spotlight 78 films; seven are feature films (over 40 minutes in length). This year Clark stated that 96 submissions were received and attributes the low submissions possibly due to COVID-19 preventing students from completing projects.

“In a typical year we will get anywhere from 120 to 140 entries, so we weren’t sure what was going to happen this year,” stated Clark.

St. Louis Filmmakers Showcase. Virtual guests have the choice of ordering “view on demand” anytime during the online festival. A few genres among the several options are comedy, thriller and documentary.

One of the other

genres that may particularly hit home for many people due to this year’s need to quarantine and social distance may be the Altered Perspectives program. Among the 10 films in the program is “Boxes” – the story of a depressed young man who goes outside. One of the other films in the program, “Are You Alright?” tells the story of a man who reaches a melting pot when his day job becomes an every-waking-moment job.

“The original draft of the screenplay was written in early 2014,” shared Alessio Summerfield, writer, director, editor, and producer for “Are You Alright?” “I’d just moved to Missouri, was living in Potosi, had just left all of my friends and connections behind, and was struggling with a lot of anger and frustration. I wanted to write a film about my struggles with that topic – anger. But over time and a lot of rewrites, it became clear that it was just about anger and it was not just about me. Several years, conversations, and iterations later – the name, length and end of the film all drastically changed, as did the focus. Instead of focusing on the anger and all the side-effects, I honed the edge to turn the film into an introspective look at work-life balance, overwork, stress, and mental health in the workplace.

Then, by allowing for a completely open casting call with no fixed age, races, or genders for characters, I was able to collaborate and befriend Jaan Marion, who brought his perspective into the project. That was an immensely important aspect to all of this, as he and I were both living different versions of this stressful life.

The juxtaposition of his experiences versus my own led to some of the visual imagery you see in the film itself.”

In addition to actor Marion, Summerfield credits the following major talents for making his vision for the film a reality: Ashley Santana, Richard Ulrich, and Cliff Mirabella (actress/actors); Michael Staenberg, James Reichmuth, and Colin MacDougall (Executive Producers); Michael D. Francis, Benjamin Dewhurst, Chad Carpenter (Producers/Executive Producers); Jesse Bader (Director of Photography); Tawaine Noah (Original Score), and Lauren Lane (Art Director).

In addition to the various films that will be available, this year’s event will feature five free live streams on designated dates and times during the festival (see website). Four of the streams are master classes that will focus on the key components of making and distributing an independent narrative feature. The fifth live stream will be the Awards Presentation on July 19.

During this time, awards will be presented along with the $500 prize for the Best Showcase Film. In addition, the films that will progress to the Whitaker St. Louis International Film Festival in November will be announced during the live stream.

According to Clark, all proceeds from the showcase support the ongoing cultural mission of CSL. A virtual tip jar will also be available to allow people to support with small or large donations.

“I think that people would be awfully impressed and surprised at the great quality of the event,” stated Clark. “These are not just film students. Some are full time filmmakers and some just want to make a film or a documentary. (There are) lots of great, really talented people in St. Louis working right now.”

Hazelwood School District rises to the challenges of the day Our lives as educators forever changed in 2020. It’s when we were forced to look at the manner in which we supported our children in all aspects of life, and in an instant, rewrite the book. The same goes for every essential service in our community. Despite difficult circumstances, I’ve seen our community rally together to continue meeting needs, and the Hazelwood School District is no different.

Our school buildings closed on March 18. That very same day, just one day removed from a ‘typical’ school day, our district found a way to deliver more than one thousand take-home meals to students. On May 11, our staff delivered more than 32,000 meals. How does that happen? It takes belief and dedication to the idea that we must continue meeting student needs in creative ways, whether they are in our buildings or not. I am so proud of our essential staff members, notably our nutrition, safety, transportation, and maintenance staff, who truly have risen to the occasion and helped our district meet an unprecedented challenge.

Meals are a critical, but small part of the equation. What about curriculum?

How do you teach without a classroom?

While our district already had a number of technological and virtual initiatives in place to supplement learning, providing education exclusively through virtual means was new. But, given a challenge, the teachers and administrators of HSD found a way. By mid-April, students were learning at home thanks to a commitment by our teachers to learning new online platforms and how to deliver a modified lesson. It has been remarkable to see the changes we’ve made in such a short time, and that is a testament to our teachers and their leadership.

Even with our high points, there is no way to fix the heartbreak we feel for the Class of 2020. As the school closure wore on, it was clear that a traditional commencement likely was off the table, but our seniors persevered through uncertainty. We honored their hard work with a virtual graduation event in June; while it looked different than anything our district has done previously, I hope our seniors know that what makes their class different than any other is their character, something I know they will carry with them and use to continue growing later in life.

Our community was challenged by this pandemic, but it was not fazed. I want to thank all of our essential workers in North County who have continued to make a difference for our families and citizens. Along with that, our numerous community partners have been essential to helping the Hazelwood School District move forward, and for that I thank you. While the past several months have been some of the most trying in our careers as educators, I believe it would be difficult to find one educator who disagrees that the collective effort we have made for our children has made those same months some of the most rewarding.

Gateway Arch National Park to Increase Recreational Access Following guidance from the White House, Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC), and state and local public health authorities, Gateway Arch National Park is increasing recreational access to the Tram Ride to the Top and Documentary Movie experiences. The National Park Service (NPS) is working service-wide with federal, state, and local public health authorities to closely monitor the COVID-19 pandemic and using a phased approach to increase access on a park-by-park basis.

Beginning July 8, , Gateway Arch National Park will reopen access to: • Tram Ride to the Top • Documentary Movie • Outdoor National Park Service programming Outdoor spaces at Gateway Arch National Park remain accessible to the public in accordance with the latest federal, state and local health guidance.

In addition, the following spaces that reopened in Phase I continue to be available: • Arch Visitor Center

Tram Ride to the Top Bi-State Development, which operates the tram, requires face coverings for tram riders ages nine and up.

• Plexiglas barriers between grouped observation windows.

• Guests with preexisting health conditions unable to wear a mask/face covering for medical reasons are exempt.

• Significantly reduced capacity throughout tram ride experience.

• Tram cars and observation deck windows assigned by family/group.

• Solo visitors will be assigned their own tram car and windows.

• Plastic coverings below observation deck windows.

• Periodic disinfecting and sanitization of tram car surfaces, seats and handrails as well as surfaces and windows in the observation desk.

Documentary Movie • Significantly reduced capacity in the theater.

Outdoor Programming • Free, 30-minute ranger-led walking tours offered daily at 10:15 a.m., 1:15 p.m. and 3:15 p.m., starting at the Arch west entrance plaza (weather permitting).

• Tour reservations are strongly encouraged by calling 877-982-1410.

• Park rangers will use a portable audio system to allow social distancing.

• Information on other programs, including ranger-led riverboat cruises and park grounds runs, can be found online at nps.gov/jeff.

Tickets Free timed ticket reservations are required to enter the Arch facility. Ticketing for Arch entry is a temporary measure un-

til the park becomes fully operational. Reservations should be made at gatewayarch.com or by calling 877-982-1410.

Tickets for the Tram Ride to the Top and Documentary Movie are also required and can be purchased online or by phone.

For individuals needing assistance with making reservations, contact the call center at 877-982-1410 or staff members will be able to assist in the west entrance plaza in front of the Arch Visitor Center during facility hours of operation.

Northwest Views: A year like no other

By Sarah Lovegreen No doubt, 2020 has been a year like no other. But at the same time, the world continues, and as we marked May as ALS Awareness Month, we took this opportunity to remind our larger community what our ALS community knows all too well: that even with all the uncertainty and unrest caused by COVID-19, ALS doesn’t stop, and neither do we as we work to support our ALS community as they face new and existing challenges.

Because of the need for extreme social distancing during this pandemic, people with ALS and their caregivers have no choice but to take extraordinary precautions and isolate themselves nearly completely. This means they are at risk of losing access to services that are traditionally delivered in person at their homes or in a clinic. Our Care Service team has been working to bridge this connection gap by reaching out by phone and video conference, and by ensuring people with ALS have access to their clinic staff in whatever way makes sense for them. Even as we have been working remotely, our staff has been in constant collaboration around how to best serve our community and how we can prepare for the time when can once again gather together.

But even though we are still mostly at home, you don’t have to sit out the fight to end ALS . There are many ways you can have an impact: Participate: June is already here and our staff is working hard to finalize plans for the 2020 St. Louis Walk to Defeat ALS. For the safety of the people with ALS we serve, their families and our staff and supporters, our 2020 Walk will not occur in Forest Park. Instead, we’re bringing the walk to you!

Please walk with us on June 27 – down your street, in your neighborhood park, in your living room…anywhere you want! Just be sure to observe social distancing measures and be safe! Although the event will be different, our purpose remains the same – to walk in memory and in honor of those affected by ALS and raise much needed

Advocate: The work of advocating for people with ALS does not stop just because we are socially distanced. While the ALS community won’t be able to gather in person for the ALS Advocacy Conference later this month, the event will still happen virtually. And we are already preparing to meet virtually with our legislators to urge them to support people with ALS on virtual Capitol Hill Day. You too can join advocates across the country and learn about the latest in ALS research, Care Services and Advocacy and engage with members of Congress on policy priorities that will improve the lives of people with ALS. Metro Transit leadership provides update on ridership, COVID-19 Response efforts Ridership on the region’s public transit system was up for the first time in 40 months before COVID-19 hit, triggering significant impacts that have required ongoing response. Key learnings from those attending Citizens for Modern Transit’s virtual “Talking Transit” event held June 23 via Zoom included details of Metro Transit’s work to protect the welfare of employees and riders, COVID-19 response efforts and safety and security.

Bi-State Development President and CEO Taulby Roach reinforced that COVID-19 related absences have had a challenging effect on Metro Transit’s driver core.

“At one time there were 350 drivers and mechanics out with COVID-19 related absences,” stated Roach. “As of June 22, these absences are down to 110. What we need to do is continue to react and do the absolute best that we can to deal with this compelling problem. We’ve been doing that through partnerships and by being fully transparent about the effect of COVID on our organization.”

Metro Transit was awarded a CARES Act grant through the Federal Transit Administration (FTA) in the amount of $142.4 million, which is being utilized to sustain operations and continue to prepare for the safe return of all riders. The transit agency continues to execute enhanced cleaning and disinfecting protocols, provide personal protective equipment for front-line team members, require that all riders wear face coverings and are distributing complementary masks courtesy of the FTA. Metro Transit installed 38 hand-washing stations along the system, recently launched a contactless mobile fare payment via the transit application, added polycarbonate shields on 425 buses and installed signage to encourage individuals to follow CDC guidelines. There are even a couple areas where Metro Transit has been leading the country. It was one of the first transit agencies in the country to set up and require daily employee temperature screenings back in March, as well establishing an employee incentive program to provide extra pay for operators given the very difficult circumstances in which they are working.

“We also adopted the Families First Coronavirus Response Act to allow additional paid sick leave for employees,” said Charles Stewart, Bi-State Development Executive Vice-President of Organizational Effectiveness. “We’ve used it to protect the jobs of our team members. We’ve given them every opportunity to take the time needed for their own personal health reasons and for the welfare of their families.”

Amid COVID-19 challenges, Metro Transit has continued efforts to further transit access. The transit agency is moving forward on electric bus technology and shared renderings of electric transit vehicles that will be added to the fleet starting next year. In conjunction with St. Clair County Transit District, Metro Transit is going to manage the extension of MetroLink to MidAmerica St. Louis Airport.

Tremendous progress has also been made in changing the paradigm of how safety and security is approached on the transit system with a more friendly and customer-based focus. All Transit Security Specialists have been disarmed. New contracted security was established with G4S on April 1, touting very different deployment role through a layered security approach. The second quarter Metro Security Score Card released by East-West Gateway Council of Governments shows progress is being made.

“Metro Transit and the other transit agencies in our region have shown effective leadership and guidance in navigating through these unprecedented times,” said Kimberly Cella, executive director of Citizens for Modern Transit. “We applaud them for their efforts and thank them for providing greater insight into all that has been accomplished and what the future holds for transit in the region.”

Four Florissant City Council Members sworn in for new terms

The coronavirus has been a challenge like no other that The Kaufman Fund has faced as a nonprofit. The last three and a half months have caused the nonprofit to re-think their entire organization and analyze each part to see how they should continue it during this time and if they can effectively operate a program right now.

The Kaufman Fund operates five programs that benefit veterans and families. Their Dental Program is currently on hold and not taking any new veterans for treatment. The dentists have been shut down for the most part for over two months. Therefore, the organization is continuing to log all veterans’ requests for dental assistance and holding that information until the volunteer dentists ready to take on patients again.

However, the Legal Program, which provides primarily pro bono legal work by one of over 40 attorneys, has been operational throughout the pandemic. The fund has been able to take almost 50 new cases during this time. That is with most attorneys working remotely and the court system operating at far less than normal levels.

Mobile food markets will be in the community in partnership with St. Louis Area Foodbank The number of people needing help with basic needs, including food continues to grow. Since March, St. Louis Area Foodbank has distributed 5.6 million more meals through its network of community partners and programs compared to the same timeframe a year ago. The foodbank covers 14 counties in Missouri and 12 in Illinois and continues to serve thousands more people through dozens more mobile markets across its service area to help people who need food.

The list below shows mobile markets available to anyone who needs a helping hand through July 15.

No ID is needed in order to receive food and other supplies. In an effort to maintain social distancing and no-contact service to keep you, the volunteers and workers safe it is asked that people who arrive by vehicle open their trunk and then stay in their vehicle. The food will then be placed in the trunk/ cab. If you do not have a vehicle, please check with the organization hosting the mobile market to find out if they are accepting walk-ups.

Hazelwood Opens Community Center, disc golf course; Civic Center East remains closed indefinitely Hazelwood opened the fitness area in the Community Center, the disc golf course, and the skate park on June 29, as well as began providing fitness classes. No basketball will be allowed at this time. The Community Center will be open to residents and premier pass holders only and all premier passes will be extended by four months. Due to budget cuts, Civic Center East will remain closed indefinitely.

Patrons must wear masks while in the

Community Center and check in with the front desk upon arriving. Patrons must also wipe down equipment before and after each use with the sanitizing wipes provided by the facility. Additionally, patron visits will be limited to one hour to allow the maximum number of patrons to utilize the facility.

Hazelwood Parks and Recreation will also begin offering programs, including Lightning Calculation camp, Magic to Amaze

camp, Crayola World of Design, Mad Science Rocket Camp, Mad Science Inventors camp, and Zumba. Some programs previously offered at Civic Center East, such as personal fitness training, yoga, chair yoga, and senior yoga, are now being held at the Community Center. Family Splash Night is July 31 at White Birch Bay Aquatic Center.

(NCI) regional development association has endorsed the Medicaid Expansion, Amendment 2 initiative that is on Aug. 4 ballot. This would amend the Missouri constitution to do the following: adopt Medicaid Expansion for persons 19-64 years

old with an income level at or below 133 percent of the federal poverty level; prohibit placing greater or additional burdens of eligibility or enrollment standards, methodologies, or practices on persons covered under Medicaid Expansion than on any other population eligible for Medicaid; and require state agencies to take all actions necessary to maximize federal financial participation in funding medical assistance under Medicaid Expansion.

“NCI has encouraged Medicaid expansion for several years. By bringing our tax dollars home, we can protect thousands of frontline healthcare jobs, help hospitals stay open, and deliver healthcare to individuals who earn less than $18,000 a year,” said Rebecca Zoll, President and CEO of North County Inc. For a family of four the threshold would be around $35,000 per year or less to receive this benefit. North County area hospital leadership are in favor of Medicaid expansion because it supports vulnerable populations that get overlooked in our current healthcare system.

“Expanding Medicaid in the state will provide access to care to over 200,000 Missourians, this is the right thing to do,” said Rick Stevens, President of Christian Hospital, and past board chair of North County Inc. “SSM Health believes that everyone should have access to high quality and affordable healthcare. We believe that Medicaid expansion will provide needed coverage to the poor and vulnerable in our communities,” added Ellis Hawkins, President, SSM Health DePaul Hospital and NCI executive board member. “By expanding Medicaid, we will not only be able to provide coverage for more Missourians, but we can also bring back federal tax dollars that we have been sending to other states who have expanded their Medicaid programs.”

Missouri’s tax dollars are now going to states like New York and California. According to the Missouri Foundation for Health, “The benefits of Medicaid expansion go far beyond issues of health and insurance. At a time of economic hardship, high unemployment, and state budget cuts, expansion will inject more than a billion dollars per year into the Missouri economy, creating jobs, increasing economic output, and adding to personal income.”

Tesh Jewel, Vice President of Operations for Mercy Clinic–East Community in St. Louis said this of the proposed Medicaid expansion.

“I’m proud to say that here at Mercy we believe expanding Medicaid is simply the right thing to do. As a healing ministry of Jesus, Mercy is called to care for the sick and the poor. We know expanding Medicaid will provide health care coverage for many hardworking people in our state. We support letting the voters decide what is best for Missourians,” Jewel said.

Lion’s Choice donates nearly $21,000 to Operation Food Search Lion’s Choice recently donated $20,912 to Operation Food Search (OFS), a nonprofit hunger relief organization. The fast food restaurant chain generated the gift by holding a roundup fundraising campaign during the month of May at its 24 St. Louis locations.

The donation will be used to ensure children and their families receive vital food resources and additional services that help restore household food security.

“We truly appreciate the generosity of our guests who had the option to round up their food purchase transaction or donate a dollar amount to directly benefit the community’s hunger relief efforts,” said Lion’s Choice President and CEO Michael Kupstas. “We are a longtime supporter of Operation Food Search and its mission, so this contribution speaks volumes in that it was a group effort by both our team and our customers to make a difference.”

Lion’s Choice is a fast food restaurant based in St. Louis that specializes in roast beef sandwiches. The company was founded in 1967.

“The longer this pandemic exists, the more help we as an agency will require to continue feeding our region,” said OFS’s Executive Director Kristen Wild. “Community partners like Lion’s Choice enable us to provide food and household essentials to those who need it most.

Siteman Cancer Center earns highest federal rating Siteman Cancer Center at Barnes-Jewish Hospital and Washington University School of Medicine in St. Louis has been recognized once again as a top U.S. cancer institution, based on a review of its research programs. This evaluation resulted in a nearly perfect score, earning Siteman the highest possible rating — exceptional — by the National Cancer Institute (NCI), part of the National Institutes of Health (NIH).

Siteman is the only NCI-designated Comprehensive Cancer Center in Missouri and in southern Illinois. The cancer center is known for its leadership, cutting-edge research and focus on turning scientific discoveries into innovative cancer treatments.

To maintain its NCI designation, a cancer center must undergo a rigorous, peer-reviewed evaluation every five years.

Siteman also received an exceptional rating in 2015, when it last underwent an NCI review.

“We are pleased with the work that has earned Siteman its national and international reputation,” said Timothy J. Eberlein, MD, Siteman’s director and the Spencer T. and Ann W. Olin Distinguished Professor and head of the Department of Surgery at the School of Medicine. “This is recognition of the impact we have had on our patients, helping to develop innovative treatments that are making a difference in their lives. We are here to provide hope for them.”

Siteman earned its latest exceptional rating based on a January site visit by 22 researchers and administrators from academic cancer centers across the U.S. During the visit, Washington University researchers and physicians presented their innovative research programs in genomics, cancer imaging, cancer prevention and disparities, immunology and immunotherapy, and early-phase clinical trials.

Among the topics presented: • Siteman’s robust portfolio of more than 600 clinical studies and the cancer center’s success enrolling more than 12,000 patients in clinical studies per year. Enrollment is an NCI priority because of the essential role of clinical studies in the development and approval of new treatments and other interventions.

• Genomic research to identify personalized targets and create personalized vaccines.

• The use of ultrasound and photoacoustic imaging, which relies on light and sound rather than tissue samples, to diagnose ovarian cancer.

• Community-based research to understand and reduce cancer disparities and lessen the burden of cancer in our entire region.

• Improvements in colorectal cancer screening in urban and rural areas.

• The use of cellular therapies and CAR-T cell therapy to

treat blood and bone marrow cancers.

• The development of novel immunotherapies for the prevention and treatment of cancer.

• Community outreach and education, and enhanced access to cancer care.

• The range of educational opportunities available at Siteman, from mentorships for high school and college students to advanced training for medical students and junior faculty.

“Our Washington University researchers have been at the forefront of discoveries that have advanced the understanding or changed the course of

treatment for a variety of cancers,” said John F. DiPersio, MD, PhD, Siteman’s deputy director and the Virginia E. and Samuel J. Golman Endowed Professor of Oncology and director of the Division of Oncology at the School of Medicine. “Along with our commitment to basic, translational and clinical research, we have trained countless scientists, physicians and fellows who have gone on to become leaders in their fields of interest and leaders of research here and at other major cancer centers around the world.”

To further extend its research efforts and promote science-based best practices, Siteman launched the Siteman Cancer Network in 2017, an af-

filiation with regional medical centers that is aimed at improving the health of individuals and communities through cancer research, treatment and prevention. Among other efforts, Siteman works with affiliates in Missouri and Illinois to assess the burden of cancer in specific areas and to plan and execute ways to prevent and control the disease.

“Our focus is forward as we lead the charge for better health,” Eberlein said. “That’s true whether our work is in the laboratory, clinic or community. Consecutive exceptional ratings are a validation of our extraordinary efforts to prevent, better diagnose and treat cancer throughout our region.”

Lutheran High School honors inductee LHS recently announced that Aaron Hill, Class of 2009, has been named the St. Charles County Male Athlete of the Year as a senior. He was a highly decorated three-sport athlete in his high school career, Hill attended the University of Minnesota, earning a football scholarship and being named to the Academic All-Big 10 Team, the NCAA Division I All-Academic All-American Team, and Team Defensive Captain in his senior season.

When he graduated from the University of Minnesota, Hill attained both a bachelor of science and masters of education in applied kinesiology and exercise science.

At 6’ 1”, he played a short time in the National Foot-

ball league as a linebacker before becoming the Assistant Strength and Conditioning Coach at Vanderbilt University (2015-2019).

After his time at Vanderbilt, Hill joined the San Francisco 49’ers as Assistant Strength and Conditioning Coach.

The organization recently inked a contract with defender Sam Guernsey from the Baltimore Blast.

Guernsey, 27, has played seven professional indoor soccer seasons with two seasons with the Tulsa Revolution (PASL and MASL) from 2013-15, three seasons with the Cedar Rapids Rampage (MASL) from 2015-18 and two seasons with the Baltimore Blast (MASL) from 2018-20.

He has also played two seasons of outdoor soccer with the Cedar Rapids Rampage United (PLA).

He has compiled 31 goals and 19 assists in 113 career regular season games. His postseason experience include having appeared in two playoff games with Cedar Rapids during the 2017-18 season and four playoff games with Baltimore during the 2018-19 season.

A native of Broken Arrow, Oklahoma, Guernsey played collegiate soccer at Oklahoma Christian University. Prior to college, he was a four-year starter at Broken Arrow High School.

Ambush General Manager Jeff Locker stated that Guernsey is “an important part of our long term plans.” * Great addition Hall-of-Famer retires at Lindenwood Lindenwood University’s athletic trainer and Hall-of-Famer Randy Biggerstaff announced he will retire at the end of this month.

Biggerstaff, who most recently worked with the baseball and men’s soccer programs at Lindenwood and has been on the athletic training staff since 1997 with his induction into the National Athletic Trainers’ Association Hall of Fame in 2010.

The National Athletic Trainers Association recognized him in 2001 as a Most Distinguished Athletic Trainer with his objective of developing the Athletic Training Education Program that he guided to full accreditation in 2003. A special award received was the National Athletic Trainers Service Award in 2017.

Ingredients: 10 wooden skewers water 2 medium zucchinis, cut into large chunks 2 medium bell peppers (any color),

cut nto large chunks 2 red onions, cut into large chunks 1 cup cherry tomatoes 10-12 ounces cooked shrimp, peeled,

deveined, tails on

olive oil

sea salt, to taste 1 lemon, juice only

Directions: In bowl, soak skewer sticks in water at least 10 minutes to prevent burning on grill). Preheat grill to medium-high heat.

Build skewers by alternating zucchinis, bell peppers, onions, tomatoes and shrimp, pushing ingredients closely together on each skewer. Brush each with olive oil and sprinkle with sea salt, to taste.

Cook skewers about 9 minutes, rotating every 3 minutes until veggies and shrimp are seared but not overcooked. Remove and place on large platter.

Drizzle with lemon juice and serve.

With theaters closed, streaming services fill the gap

Born and raised in South St. Louis, Steve Bryan is now based in Anaheim, California, and has been allowed access to movie and television sets to see actors and directors at work. Though his writing has taken him far from St. Louis, Steve is, at heart, still the same wide-eyed kid who spent countless hours watching classic movies at neighborhood theaters.

For the last few weeks, theater chains such as AMC and Regal Cinemas were on track to reopen in mid-July.

However, concerns over the increased number of COVID-19 cases and new government restrictions prompted theater owners to change their plans. The delayed openings of Christopher Nolan’s “Tenet,” Disney’s highly anticipated “Mulan” and “Wonder Woman 1984” factored into their decisions. Broadway shows also have been cancelled for the rest of the year.

Over the past few months, though, streaming services filled the void created by a lack of theatrical releases. The Walt Disney Studios made a bold move by acquiring the rights to a movie version of the hit Broadway show “Hamilton.” Streaming on Disney+ beginning July 3, Lin-Manuel Miranda’s take on the story of Alexander Hamilton became a Broadway sensation. The movie version is a recording of an actual theatrical performance.

Debuting in 2019, Disney+ draws upon decades of content from the Walt Disney archives as well as the Marvel Studios and Pixar divisions. For $6.99 per month, films such as “Avatar,” “Frozen II” and a wide variety of live-action movies from the Disney vaults can

Moore On Life Just when I think I’m all grown up and in charge the world starts treating me like a kid again.

I went to the grocery store and saw there are little taped X’s at the checkout telling me where I must stand. I do as I am instructed and stay very still. I feel I mustn’t move an inch either way out of my space or I’ll be in big trouble…maybe even get a time out.

Back in kindergarten we had spaces we weren’t supposed to move out of either. They were little carpet squares. We’d drag them from our cubbies and set them around our teacher. We were to stay put inside the square. Anyone breaking the rule was quickly ratted out by another student.

I was all in on being part of the secret police, which was sure to earn some praise from the teacher. Suddenly I saw sassy-mouthed Jenny Womack edging out of her square. My arm shot up like a Pop-Tart from a toaster. “Mrs. Thompkins, Mrs. Thompkins, Jenny’s out of her square!”

The teacher reprimanded Jenny with a warning.

I felt good inside and stuck my tongue out at her sideways so she could see and the teacher couldn’t.

After my minute of triumph, Mrs. Thompkins shot me the dreaded stink eye.

“Cindy, can you pay more attention to story time and less time monitoring everyone else’s behavior?

And keep that tongue in your mouth or you’ll get a time out!”

That pretty much ruined my aspirations for law enforcement.

So besides being told where to stand, I’m con-

stantly advised to wash my hands-like a toddler. The radio blares reminders; the TV is always harping about it and signs are posted everywhere pestering us about our hygiene practices. I only wish they had this much nagging back in kindergarten when Jenny Womack had her finger up her nose and then got to pass out her birthday cookies.

The list goes on: keep your hands to yourself; don’t touch your face or nose; keep a good distance from strangers; and no, you can’t go out and play…ever!

I guess this is our life today; a throwback to childhood.

I finally made my way up to the cashier and let the clerk know that the lady behind me had moved off of her X three times.

I was banished to the storage room for 15 minutes. Who knew the grocery store had a time out?
