The Missouri Environmental Education Association is adding to the food distribution services of Operations Food Search by providing families 6,300 outdoor learning kits

By Charlotte Beard The Missouri Environmental Education Association (MEEA) along with community partners, have developed an additional opportunity for families to venture outdoors.

Previously scheduled to begin July 13, MEEA is adding to the food distribution services of Operations Food Search (OFS) and St. Louis County Libraries by providing 6,300 outdoor learning kits, on a first come first serve basis, at 10 libraries this summer.

Traci Jansen, a teacher at W. W. Keysor Elementary in the Kirkwood School District states that the pilot program originated due to OFS’ increased involvement with families due to COVID-19. There are three separate themes for the kits. The first kit that was scheduled for distribution July 13, was the Food and Pollinators kit. Jansen who has also

used various components of the kits with her students this past school semester, stated the kit provides education of healthy food options to pair with what families receive from Operation Food Search. The kit will also help participants identify the food that comes from pollinators and the variety of pollinators in the St. Louis region, such as honeybees, butterflies and hummingbirds.

“In the kits are informational pamphlets that talk about the perks, benefits and how awesome are our insects and pollinators,” stated Jansen.

She went on to explain that recipients of the food and pollinator kit will include activities to make headbands and masks, read a book, and participate in search and observation for the pollinators.

The next kit scheduled for July distribution is the Observing and Nature journaling kit which will educate participants by way of observing the greenspace they explore and how the things connected to it are associated with that space. Participants will record what changes within that space over time.

Jansen stated that the Outdoor Play kit, set for distribution in August, will include activities for search-and-find – hiking and scavenger hunts – incorporating components of the two previous kits.

“We tried to design kits that would incorporate family involvement as well as education for pre-K through 12th grade,” stated Jansen.

“You can go into any greenspace. It can be between your road and your sidewalk – just looking at that green area. (Participation) can be just looking at a container plant or taking a day trip to the zoo and looking at (the plants). It does not need to be in (a) backyard; there is greenery and landscapes all around in urban and suburban environments.”

According to Jansen, all kits have recipe-like cards that include resources for each kit’s theme and a pencil, pencil sharpener along with a journal.

“I’m blown away by the enthusiastic response of so many partners so quickly,” stated Lesli Moylan, MEEA Executive Director. “We’re all so happy to have a tangible way to make a positive difference for kids who are going through so much right now. This collaborative

project will help bring the joy of nature to many families this summer, and I’m very grateful to Operation Food Search and St. Louis County Libraries for providing our distribution pathway.”

The additional partners involved in this pilot include Missouri Foundation for Health, Saint Louis Zoo, Missouri Department of Conservation, Missouri Department of Natural Resources, Missouri 4-H, Missouri Coalition for the Environment, St. Louis Community Foundation, Gateway Greening, Earthways Center of the Missouri Botanical Garden, Way 2 Fresh Eats, Urban Harvest STL, Greenscape Gardens, Baker Creek Heirloom Seeds, O.K. Hatchery, and the North American Association for Environmental Education. Moylan states that they have worked together in various ways to make the initiative happen.

“Some (partners) provided activity guidelines,” stated Moylan, “some donated materials, and some have provided volunteer hours for kit assembly/transporting. (In addition), some (partners) have (supported all efforts). It is really neat to see organizations from across the state come together for this project!”

Jansen states, “We’re proud of what we’ve started.

We’re eager to see how the deployment goes.”

Jansen shared that each kit includes website information for family feedback via an online survey to help the initiative in determining needs for extending the pilot to rural communities. In addition, each kit’s activity guide and suggested materials will be available online, free-of-charge, at www.meea.org this fall. The 10 libraries that are receiving the current pilot (visit https://www.slcl.org/drive-thru-meals) were determined based on community needs.

Moylan shared, “Missouri Foundation for Health, along with partners St. Louis County Library, Operation Food Search, St. Louis Area Food Bank, and EdPlus, developed a plan for summer food distribution in St. Louis County using an equity lens as described below. Our limited capacity meant we couldn’t supply kits to all the distribution sites, but our available resources lined up with the library distribution pathways – they provide 2,100 meals each day they distribute and we were able to pool enough resources to provide three kits through them this summer.”

C.L.I.M.B. uses A.I.M. to make the impossible, possible During this time of uncertainty, financial hardship and unprecedented loss of life a specific internship prepares students for the opportunity to gain additional skills and content knowledge in STEM, while also being paid. COVID-19 has impeded many summer internships, especially at the high school level. However, the Collaborative Laboratory Internships and Mentoring Blueprint also known as C.L.I.M.B. has developed a way to continue to support high school students from disadvantaged communities. C.L.I.M.B. is a partnership between Dr. Partricia Parker, Des Lee Professor of Zoological Studies at the University of Missouri St. Louis, and local North County school districts.

Since 2015, this paid internship program has served bright and motivated students from North St. Louis where they routinely lack opportunities available in more affluent districts. In the Collaborative Laboratory Internships and Mentoring Blueprint (CLIMB), they gain hands-on experience and technical know-how in authentic scientific research. The success of this program is evident in the fact that over 90 percent of previous interns have not only attended college, but remained in college. Many of these students have majored in STEM. Innovative leaders do not allow the current state of the world to be a barrier. Face to face activities are currently prohibited at UMSL and many other institutions, so the virtual student internship was created aimed at learning to think like a scientist. This experience will not substitute their hands-on internship experience to follow at UMSL in the fall, but will prepare them for that handson internship experience in an assigned collegiate laboratory or department.

fore COVID-19. Our students will have to know and use virtual learning and technology in ways unfamiliar to them before the pandemic. Not only physical equipment, but skills, such as the ability to critically think and collaborate with peers via Zoom, Google Meet, and or other modes may become a necessity.

How did the virtual student internship become a reality? C.L.I.M.B. has A.I.M. Attitude: Leaders have to believe equity truly provides opportunity. It would be easy to simply postpone or cancel the opportunity or take the stance that due to lack of equipment, drive, and social issues that may be occurring in the home that this will not work. However, our team chooses to believe our students are capable and willing to collaborate in order to perform research. “They can do it.”

Intention: Leaders must be willing to work with students directly… with a handson approach that includes encouragement, communication, and modeling behaviors via virtual learning. We must be willing to hold students accountable, but also to support their growth. Constantly checking in to provide support and to ensure students are working together.

Mechanics: Put ideas into action, support the ideas with expectations, and manage the expectations with follow through.

The interns will meet every Friday afternoon for two hours between now and the end of July 2020. Research mentors and school administrators will join them every other Friday and will begin to discuss what it means to be a scientist. Like everyone else, scientists have beliefs, assumptions, and intuition, but they rely on the gathering of data and facts to support their positions on im-

portant topics when they recognize that they lack factual knowledge. The overarching topic of exploration is the coronavirus pandemic. What are viruses and how do they differ from bacteria? Why this virus is called Covid-19? How does it differ from previous viruses and pandemics? Why is it hitting the African-American community much harder than other racial or ethnic groups? We will approach each of these questions using the scientific method over the course of this spring-summer experience.

Arts As Healing Foundation hosts first public art classes

Operation Food Search receives $75,000 grant from MAZON

Arts As Healing Foundation (AAH), a nonprofit that brings the therapeutic benefits of art to cancer patients and those with chronic illness, will hold its first public art class titled “Fundamentals of Drawing.” The six-week interactive Zoom course – either Thursdays beginning July 16 or Saturdays beginning July 18 – will be held from Submitted photo 10 a.m. to 12:30 p.m. All proceeds will benefit the Arts As Healing Foundation Executive Director Vicki Friedman.

“Fundamentals of Drawing” is a hands-on artistic experience that will feature instructional demonstrations and one-on-one guidance for each participant’s full color creation. AAH’s Executive Director Vicki Friedman will teach the Zoom classes along with assistance from artist volunteers. Friedman, a trained artist and two-time cancer survivor, brings her extensive skill set to the course which is designed for both beginners and those with drawing experience.

“People with cancer and other chronic conditions take our classes to reduce stress brought on by their illness. It helps them escape and forget about their health while they get lost in creating,” said Friedman. “This is the first time in our organization’s history that we have classes for the general public. We do this to help support our organization and to help those in the community lower their feelings of stress and anxiety during these challenging times.”

Founded in 2013, Arts As Healing Foundation conducts classes at area hospitals including Siteman Cancer Centers, Missouri Baptist Cancer Center, and Mercy Hospital at South County. The nonprofit hosts weekly studio classes at its permanent headquarters located at 11804 Borman Dr., visits hospitals to provide chairside art instruction for patients receiving treatments, and holds collaborative events with other nonprofits.

Healthworks! Kids’ Museum reopens with new safety protocols After closing in mid-March amid COVID-19 health concerns, HealthWorks! Kids’ Museum St. Louis has announced it will reopen to the public on July 10, with new

measures in place that will allow children and families to safely access the museum’s fun and interactive exhibits and programming aimed at educating and inspiring them to make positive health choices. As part of the reopening plan, operating hours will be reduced to allow for deep cleaning throughout the day, capacity restrictions will be put in place for birthday parties and general visits, and advance reservations will now be required.

The museum’s plan to reopen has been approved by the city of St. Louis in accordance with the city’s public health guidelines. The museum will operate at 25 percent capacity (or a maximum of 60 visitors). Families must make advance reservations online at HWSTL.org and have the option of scheduling hour-and-a-half-long visits during three different timeframes on Fridays and Saturdays, which include 9 to 10:30 a.m., 11 a.m. to 12:30 p.m. and 2 to 3:30 p.m. Additional days will be added if Fridays and Saturdays reach full capacity. Sundays will be open to birthday party or private group reservations only, which be made by emailing info@hwstl.org.

Upon entry, visitors will be asked to attest to being free of COVID-19 symptoms, complete a health screening questionnaire and have their temperature checked with a touchless thermometer. At the direction of St. Louis City’s Department of Health, protective face coverings will be highly recommended for children between the ages of three and eight and will be required for visitors ages 9 and up. All HealthWorks! staff will also be required to wear face coverings at all times. As part of enhanced safety protocols, separate one-way paths and queuing lines will be incorporated throughout the museum to ensure visitors maintain social distancing of at least six feet, and increased hand sanitizer stations will be available for personal sanitization. All staff members will be required to participate in daily health

screenings, and they will work to disinfect high-touch areas throughout the day. These restrictions will be revisited as St. Louis City’s Health Orders change.

“We appreciate our guests’ patience and cooperation as we work to safely reopen,” said Shannon Laine, CEO of HealthWorks! Kids’ Museum St. Louis. “With the health and safety of our staff and visiting children and families at the forefront, we strived to create a plan that would allow our visitors to learn about health and hygiene in a clean, safe environment. We aim to educate children to lead healthier lives through fun and interactive programming and exhibits, and we look forward to continuing this focus at our physical location.”

When HealthWorks! reopens, visitors will notice a slight change to the exhibits and programming. To comply with the public health guidelines, exhibits that feature small manipulatives, including the pharmacy, dental office and medical office, will be unavailable for free play at this time. In their place, the museum is offering two brand new, hour-long, interactive programs that are guided by educators. “Escape the Germs” teaches kids to learn the fascinating science behind germs. Each family unit will work to complete challenges, gather information and answer questions to escape from the germs.

Upon completion, they will be able to identify the manner in which scientists study germs, name types of germs and their effects on people, and describe ways to stay safe from germs. The second program, “Doc In The House,” features six pretend patients who are in need of medical care for different reasons. Kids and families will work to uncover a different sign or symptom their patient is experiencing, and by program’s end, they must determine a diagnosis and how to treat their patient.

Materials that are handed to each family unit for these two programs will be disinfected after each use.

“We are excited to introduce our new programming to visitors in the coming weeks,” said Laine. “These two, timely programs have been developed with the health of our community in mind, and they both follow HealthWorks! mission, which is especially important as we adjust to a new way of life to stop the spread of the COVID-19 virus.”

Live music finds a home at the drive-in with Mr. Blue Sky For me, live music has always been just what the doctor ordered. Thanks to Powerplex STL and the transformation of the old St. Louis Mills parking lot, live music has new life again. An outdoor live show featuring the band Mr. Blue Sky, an Electric Light Orchestra tribute band kicked off Freedom Fest on July 1.

The design of getting a parking spot for your car and one for your chairs works out very well in meeting the social distancing requirements. The big screens and multiple camera angles from the stage keep you from feeling that you are missing anything.

Mr. Blue Sky brings a full stage of excellent musicians and faithfully delivers a spectrum of songs by Jeff Lynne, The Traveling Wilburys and the classic recordings of ELO like ‘Telephone Line,” “Strange Magic,”

and “Don’t Bring Me Down.” This band does not skimp on covering the strings, keys and high harmonies that ELO is famous for.

One highlight was the diligent attempt to teach everyone some dance moves to participate in a dance mob to the song, “All Over The World.”

I can report that there were many valiant attempts made to follow the routine, but there were many more Mr. Blue Sky performs at Powerplex STL in the old St. Louis Mills parking lot.

42 doors tell story of hope Last week, 42 doors took on special significance as part of a new art installation series to raise awareness and funding for Hope Lodge St. Louis across the bi-state region. The American Cancer Society’s 42 Doors of Hope showcases local artists’ interpretations of cancer patients’ journeys. Residents can vote for their favorite door throughout the campaign.

“Cancer patients and their caregivers who travel to our city for treatment rely on the American Cancer Society Hope Lodge for a free home away from home,” said Jim Kavanaugh, CEO of World Wide Technology and chair of the society’s capital campaign to renovate the facility. “We are in the midst of a much-needed renovation that will create 42 suites to help connect cancer patients to the care they need. It will take the community’s support to truly make the space a home away from home and maintain open doors to these important services.”

The society has partnered with local artists to create 42 doors, symbolizing the 42 guest suites that will be available at the new facility. Each door is unique, as is each patient’s journey to wellness. At the same time, the doors are part of a collection and community that represents what each guest experiences at Hope Lodge St. Louis. The campaign features art from popular local artists including The Muny scenic artist Andy Cross and high school art teacher Byron Rogers and will be displayed across the metro — from Busch Stadium to Ferguson Brewing Company to the Alton Riverfront.

“A door is a symbol of a journey, a transition or metamorphosis — many of the same feelings cancer patients and their families experience on

their quest for wellness,” said Jason McClelland, senior director of regional corporate relations for the American Cancer Society North Region.

“42 Doors of Hope brings awareness to the challenges facing cancer patients and their families, while also bringing art to new and unexpected corners of the community.”

Since 1995, Hope Lodge St. Louis has served tens of thousands of people. The facility offered 11,481 nights of free lodging in 2019 alone.

Renovations will improve guest and caregiver experiences, keep pace with their needs and provide a better quality of life during their stay.

The new facility also includes additional safety measures to protect immunocompromised guests from COVID-19 or other health threats.

A map of the doors is available at 42doorsofhope.org, along with information about each art installation and the artist who brought it to life.

Community members are encouraged to safely visit as many doors as possible and share pictures of themselves with the doors. Community members can also vote for their favorite door and can continue to connect cancer patients to the care they need by making an online donation at 42doorsofhope.org or by texting DOORS to 20222 for a $10 donation through mobile carriers. Funds raised during this campaign will stay in St. Louis to support our Hope Lodge. Money raised will have a direct impact on the care of local guests so they can focus on just one thing: getting well.

Normandy selects new high school principal The Normandy Joint Executive Governing Board has approved the selection of Nakia Douglas as the new principal for Normandy High School. Douglas officially assumed her new role July 1.

Douglas is a veteran educator with extensive experience in urban public education. Prior to joining Normandy, Douglas served as the Deputy Superintendent and Chief Academic Officer at MGT/Gary Community Schools in Photo courtesy Normandy Schools Gary, Indiana. She also served as the Collaborative National SPED (special education) Director with the Phalen Leadership Academies in Indiana and Michigan. Douglas also served as an assistant principal in the Indianapolis Public Schools. She is an experienced classroom teacher, having worked in several school districts in Illinois and Indianapolis.

“I have a great deal of confidence in Ms. Douglas’ abilities to lead our students and staff as we look to make significant improvements at our high school,” said Marcus C. Robinson, Normandy Superintendent of Schools. “Her experience in urban education in leadership and as a classroom teacher will be invaluable to the important work we have to do to improve student achievement.”

Douglas earned her bachelor’s degree in English and secondary education from Indiana State University in Terre Haute. She earned her master’s degree in school leadership from the University of Indianapolis, and an education specialist degree from Ball State University. Douglas is currently completing coursework toward her doctorate degree in Education Leadership from Ball State University in Indiana.

The Jennings Do-Dads will hold their 27th annual Juvenile Justice Scholarship Golf Tournament with an 8 a.m. shotgun start at Florissant Golf Club at 50 Country Club Lane in Florissant.

The tournament format will feature a four-player team, 18-hole scramble, with prizes being awarded to the top finishers in each of four flights. Team entry cost (four players) is $360 and includes greens fees, cart, limited beverages at course, attendance prizes and the post-tournament BBQ luncheon and refreshments. Indoor soccer team sign goalkeeper for five more years The Ambush play professional indoor soccer in the Major Arena Soccer League (MASL) with home games at the Family Arena.

The St. Louis Ambush have extended goalkeeper Paulo Nascimento for five more years, keeping him in an Ambush uniform through the 2024-25 season, the team announced.

Paulo, who plays under his first name only, joined the Ambush in 2017 and has become known for his acrobatic saves and durability in goal. He earned All-MASL Honorable Mention each of the last two seasons.

Paulo is a native of Natal, a city in the state of Rio Grande do Norte in northeastern Brazil.

Prior to joining the Ambush, he enjoyed a stellar career of over ten years in Bralilian futsal. Paulo has appeared in 60 games in three seasons with the Ambush, compiling a 21-39 win-loss record with a 6.77 goals against average and a .661 save percentage.

Ambush Head Coach Hewerton said, “When we brought Paulo here from Brazil, we knew of his athleticism and skill. He adapted quickly to the American arena soccer game and we’re thrilled to have him for the next five years.”

Ferdinand, a veteran of 11 professional indoor soccer seasons, consistently ranks among the best players in the Major Arena Soccer League (MASL).

The deal puts Ferdinand in an Ambush uniform for the next two seasons with a mutual option for a third year. Ferdinand has posted 181 goals and 211 assists in 226 career games. He made his mark early in his career, winning the MISL Rookie of the Year honor in 2010. Ferdinand played six seasons with the Baltimore Blast (MISL and MASL) from 2009 to 2015, before moving to the Milwaukee Wave (MASL), where he spent the last five seasons.

A consistent offensive threat, Ferdinand has tallied 15 or more goals in eight of his 11 seasons.

While he is a dependable scorer, Ferdinand is also a prolific playmaker, with more than 25 assists in each of his last four seasons. He finished in the top three in the league in that category each of the last four seasons as well, leading the league twice.

Max is also a mainstay on the stat charts for points scored, finishing in the top ten each of the last four seasons in both total points and points per game average. Ferdinand also brings postseason experience to the Ambush, having won league championships with both Baltimore and Milwaukee.

Filling: 1 package (8 ounces) light cream cheese, at room temperature 1/4 cup granulated sugar 1 large egg 1/2 tablespoon cornstarch 1/2 lemon, zest only 1/2 teaspoon vanilla extract

Toppings (optional): plain or vanilla Greek yogurt sliced strawberries sliced raspberries sliced blueberries fresh mint toasted coconut flakes agave sliced almonds lemon zest

Directions: Preheat oven to 350 F. Line cupcake pan with eight paper baking cups and set aside.

To make crust: In bowl of food processor, pulse oats and walnuts until coarsely ground. Add olive oil, butter, sugar, cinnamon and salt; pulse until evenly moistened and combined.

Press 1 tablespoon of mixture firmly onto bottoms of cups. Bake 7 minutes until cooked.

To make filling: In medium bowl, beat cream cheese and sugar until

smooth and creamy. Add egg, cornstarch, lemon zest and vanilla; continue beating until well combined.

Spoon mixture evenly into muffin cups. Bake 20-22 minutes until cream cheese mixture is set. Remove from oven and cool in tins about 10 minutes. Transfer to wire rack and cool completely. Place in refrigerator and chill completely before serving or decorating with yogurt, strawberries, raspberries, blueberries, mint, coconut flakes, agave, almonds and lemon zest, if desired.

hh the good old days. That would be this last February.

It was such a time of innocence and unknowing.

Around then a strange new word started to appear: COVID19. We old folks shrugged it off as probably one of those new rap groups. It didn’t pertain to us.

Along with it came another word: coronavirus. The millennials thought it was some type of fancy alcoholic beverage. Then pandemic appeared on the news. The youngsters thought this was an invasion of panda bears and looked forward to it. A free panda bear for everyone, they cheered!

I actually had to look that one up in the dictionary. After all, there hadn’t been one since the Dark Ages. I was still in diapers then…actually, swaddled in tree bark since diapers hadn’t been invented yet. Pandemic was defined as: an epidemic, only on steroids. Buy toilet paper…NOW! Who would have known by mid-year our quaint ways of living would be so different.

Greetings have certainly changed. The old-fashioned way of saying hello has transformed beyond recognition. Once a cheery handshake was common, now it has been replaced with a series of strange gestures.

My husband ran into an old friend (an old friend who just might be covered in a film of deadly face-eating bacteria). He offered to shake his hand. My husband shook his head and extended a fist bump to which the friend bent his arm to offer an elbow knock. My husband jabbed out his elbow in response, but too late, the friend raised his hand for a high five instead.

Skin to skin contact?! They both knew that was unacceptable. So they did what any red-blooded, he-man would do in this situation, they turned around and bumped their heinies against each other.

Daze of yore

Of course, it embarrassed them to the point that they walked away with their heads bent and promised to never speak of this encounter again.

Conversation has changed considerably. It’s impossible to understand anyone wearing a mask.

At the store, my husband and I divided up the shopping list then met up later.

“Did you pick up the cat food?” he asked. Only it came out, dead pig oud fud?

“Did you just call me a dead pig?”

He said, “Pick, pick.” But I distinctly heard pig, pig.

“How rude! Just because I don’t wear makeup under this mask is no reason to call names.”

We no longer speak to each other while wearing masks. We text.
