Florissant’s Valley of Flowers Festival, moved because of the coronavirus pandemic, celebrates the Saint Louis Zoo Spring would normally mark the festivity of the Valley of Flowers Festival. This year, the event was cancelled due to the restrictions required to halt the spread of the COVID-19 virus. The slogan on signs around town say: “Together We Are Florissant Strong.” The Valley of Flowers celebration of the Saint Louis Zoo will prove that the slogan is true. In 2020 this Florissant family-oriented event, normally the North County’s “first festival of spring,” will be held in August for the first time in the 58-year history of the festival. Although the festival will be downsized without a carnival and without a car show, it will still feature a variety of attractions highlighted by the Grand Parade. The Queen and her Court will have been crowned prior to the festival. The date of the crowning will be as soon as Saint Louis County leadership lifts restrictions on large gatherings. The festival committee is working on procuring some familiar attractions as well as providing some different activities. Planning is underway and everything is still subject to
change but here is a little information. The 2020 festival will still have some features like “Touch-A-Truck” to which everyone is accustomed, Brush Capades where children can create their own masterpieces, also pony rides for the children on Friday and Saturday. The festival will introduce some new experiences including well-known local bands for evening entertainment. The Saint Louis Zoo will be highlighted in the Grand Parade. This year, the only venue for the three-day festivities on July 31, Aug. 1 and 2 will be at the Duchesne Home Association Fairgrounds. Please note that coolers will not be allowed on the fairgrounds during the festival. All food and beverages including beer and wine as well as soft drinks and water must be purchased on the grounds. The entrance to the event will be on rue Saint Francois Street. Parking for golf carts, which will also enter on rue Saint Francois, will be available in Coldwater Commons Park next to the Saint Ferdinand Shrine. Enjoy browsing the work of the crafters, the magical stylings of RW Magic, the Bubble
Bus and as always the delicious food including the ever-popular funnel cakes. In the evenings there will be famous bands entertaining under the band shell. On July 31, activities begin at 3 p.m. with many things for families to enjoy including pony rides, the work of the crafters, the Bubble Bus, soda, water, beer, wine and entertainment. Food trucks will serve food from 4 until 9 p.m. Please bring a canned good or two for TEAM (The Emergency Assistance Ministry) to help them feed those in need. The band “Rough Ryders” will perform from 6 until 9 p.m. There will be no charge for the performance. They play country favorites and rock favorites by Johnny Cash, Brad Paisley, Trace Adkins, Garth Brooks, Toby Keith, George Strait, Luke Bryan, Jason Aldean, Kenny Chesney, Eric Church, Florida Georgia Line, Miranda Lambert, Randy Houser, Little Big Town and Cole Swindell to name a few. On Aug. 1, the festivities begin at 11 a.m. See ‘SUMMER’ page 5
