By Sara Hardin St. Louis County Parks and Recreation has been getting the public involved in their latest Master Plan, a series of developments by the department that began last summer.

The first phase of the plan was completed after county-owned parks were surveyed for their conditions and resources by project team members. Public feedback surveys were then given to identify the needs of community members and park goers.

Public opinion has been a huge part of the Master Plan, so much so that the entire second phase of the project is dedicated to ensuring that the community’s recommendations are being heard through analysis of the survey results.

“We had three meetings across the county to solicit generalized idea and information,” said Gerry Biedenstein, Project Manager and Planner for the Master Plan. “The set of five we did in May was to start to bring conclusions and more information. We’re in the process right now of analyzing all of the feedback we’ve heard from the public during this process. In the next month and a half or so, we plan on having the conclusions of that analysis and scheduling a meeting to talk about everything and confirm what our priorities will be. Then we’ll move on from there.”

“In any master planning process it is beneficial to get as much public participation as possible,” explained Scott Emmelkamp, Master Plan Project Manager. “For the St. Louis County Parks Master Plan we have witnessed great enthusiasm from the public by those who regularly use the county parks and/or feel that their recreation needs are not currently being met. The St. Louis County Parks Master Plan will be a road

map that establishes direction for improvements not only to individual parks, but also to the park system. As a St. Louis County resident, I most look forward to seeing the improvements being made to the parks that we love.”

By Odie Smith The season of “survival of the fittest” is upon us in society. Can you survive during extreme adversity?

With the impending threat of many cutbacks in socio-economic programs that once provided support to the disenfranchised and due to many companies downsizing or going out of business, it is important to ensure that we prepare ourselves to survive.

If you have followed some of our previous articles, we have informed readers how to prepare themselves to be a viable candidate for the job or career that they desire. We have given information regarding the importance of a custom resume, proper interview etiquette and attire, integrity and possessing a healthy self-image.

However, there are some additional guidelines to adhere to if we want to be “fit to survive.” We must understand that it is both important to obtain a job and to know how to maintain it. Here are a few practical but important tips that will assist with maintaining your current job.

tempt to excel by becoming a “show-off.” Employers notice employees that are team players whose ultimate focus is the progress of the business.

Develop your skills. To enhance your chances of staying on-board with your employer go the “extra mile” to increase your knowledge. Continue to learn and to improve your efficiency and understanding of your current job, this will allow you to prepare for your next employment goal.

Keep your promises. If a coworker or manager requests assistance and you offer to lend a hand, make sure that you follow through on your promise thus showing that you are trustworthy.

Do not complain about company policies and procedures. Business guidelines are in place to support the employees and the company.

It is important to know that we will face challenges in the workplace, some of which are unfavorable.

However, if we learn how to act instead of react to negative issues, we will have a better chance of maintaining our employment and or employment status.

The above tips are only a few of many that will equip you to maintain a job and be “fit to survive.”

Beyond the Backpack community event helps families prepare for start of school Why do you read the Community News?

Beyond Housing and its community partners are making the final preparations for this year’s Beyond the Backpack community back-to-school event. The community celebration is scheduled for 11 a.m. to 2 p.m., Aug. 5 at Normandy High School at 6701 St. Charles Rock Road.

Dr. Charles Pearson, Superintendent of Schools for the Normandy Schools Collaborative, borrows a term from a popular disc jockey when describing the annual affair.

“It’s a party with a purpose! What an amazing way to start the school year,” Dr. Pearson said.

“Hats off to Beyond Housing, the city officials and all of our supporters. This is the type of collaboration that will help us reach our goal of high academic achievement – operational excellence fueled by community engagement.”

The atmosphere for Beyond the Backpack has had a party element to it. Organizers are planning for two bounce houses, Bubble Bus, free food and a DJ for live music.

The purpose, however, is to provide families an opportunity to prepare students for the coming school year. Inside the high school will be free services including hearing screenings provided by Parents as Teachers, and immunizations courtesy of the Visiting Nurses Association. Affinia Healthcare will also provide dental exams, and Eye Care

Charity of Mid-America will provide vision exams and glasses on-site. Local barbers will provide free haircuts, and lunch will be provided for participants.

Teachers and administrators from Normandy schools will also be on-hand to provide parent information, school uniforms, and other materials. This year, Normandy High School will host an open house to introduce the new principals and other teachers and staff to students and families.

And of course, Beyond Housing will distribute more than 2,000 backpacks to any student residing in the Normandy Schools Collaborative footprint.

The sidewalks surrounding the school’s courtyard will be lined up with more than 50 vendors including Midwest BankCentre, Big Brothers Big Sisters, Girl Scouts of Eastern Missouri, Parents as Teachers, and BJC Healthcare.

“Our staff works so hard to make this year’s event a great one and I am so appreciative of their efforts to put together a first class event,” said Chris Krehmeyer, President & CEO of Beyond Housing. “Helping families prepare for the first day of school sets the tone for the rest of the year.

Extended forecast poses increased risk for poor air quality

With a string of extremely hot, humid and sunny days set to hover over the St. Louis region, the Clean Air Partnership is encouraging area residents to keep an eye on the daily air quality forecast, too, and do their part to help reduce emissions in the region.

“Extended weather patterns featuring sun, extreme heat and high humidity are synonymous with the development of poor air quality conditions,” said Susannah Fuchs, director of clean air for the American Lung Association and the spokesperson for the Clean Air Partnership. “This is because sunlight and warm temperatures speed up the formation of ground-level ozone. Since we can’t control the weather factors that lead to ozone formation, it’s critical for all of us to take steps to reduce emissions when temperatures are in the ranges we’re seeing this week.”

With transportation having the most profound impact on air quality, making the choice to drive less is an easy way to help reduce the emissions that lead to poor air quality. Using transit, carpooling and vanpooling, combining errands into a single trip, telecommuting and walking and biking more to get around town help take cars off area roads and the related emissions out of our air.

Additional actions suggested by the Clean Air Partnership to help decrease emission levels in the coming days include: • Reducing time spent on the road by postponing or combining trips.

• Planning routes to avoid idling in traffic tieups and construction zones.

• Brown-bagging lunch instead of making short trips to local restaurants or idling in drive-thrus.

• Refraining from refueling vehicles during the heat of the day, waiting three seconds before removing the nozzle after filling up, and never topping off the tank.

• Using gas-powered mowers only before 10 a.m. and after 7 p.m.

• Using pre-treated briquettes or chimney starter instead of lighter fluid to light barbeque grills.

After a couple of orange day forecasts, Fuchs is also reminding area residents of the health implications of those poor air quality conditions. She cautions that those with lung disease, kids and seniors should reduce prolonged or heavy outdoor exertion when the ozone levels are in that range.

“The good news is, the simple modifications we’re suggesting to people’s daily routine can go a long way towards getting our air quality back to healthy levels and ensuring that area residents can breathe easier as the current heat wave persists,” noted Fuchs.

Throughout the summer, area residents are encouraged to visit the Clean Air Partnership’s website at www.cleanair-stlouis.com to access the daily air quality forecast. There, individuals can also sign up to receive the daily forecast in their email in-boxes via the Environmental Protection Agency’s EnviroFlash air quality alert system. Hot days and cool nights are often a common occurrence in the Midwest and no, this isn’t a Dairy Queen commercial. Before I jump into what radiational cooling is, let me first explain how our air heats and cools. The first rule of thumb is to remember that everything radiates heat. The ground is continuously emitting heat into space while it receives energy from the sun.

During the day, the incoming solar energy will often exceed the outgoing energy and the temperature at the surface will rise. At night, however, incoming solar energy is absent, but the ground continues to radiate the heat away as temperatures during the night fall. This is known as radiational cooling.

The amount of radiational cooling at night is determined by several other weather factors including cloud cover, winds, precipitation and humidity. We will experience the greatest radiational cooling during clear skies, light winds and dry weather.

Clouds serve as a blanket to retain the heating – especially during the winter months when temperatures aren’t as warm. Temperatures will not drop as much under a cloudy sky as they do when the sky is clear. Winds confine the cooler air which prevents it from

getting warm. The moisture in the air keeps the heat on the ground and prevents it from radiating away. Remember, dry air cools faster than moist air.

Rural areas will often cool off more than larger cities because the pavement and larger buildings will retain heat. We call the retention of heat in the cities as the “heat island effect.” We will often see temperatures in larger cities warmer than rural areas.

Radiational cooling is an important process and one that is continuous process to warm and cool our Earth’s surface. Significant radiational cooling is common in the desert and less common in tropical areas.

So, on a clear and dry night expect radiational cooling to occur.

The Judo instructor is “Sensei” (“Japanese for teacher”) Eiko Saito Shepherd, 8th Dan, a native of Japan and an internationally recognized Judo master. This month Sensei Shepherd is bringing a very special event to Florissant.

The 15th Annual United States Judo Federation Kata Conference will be conducted at the Florissant Civic Center from Monday, July 24, through Friday, July 28.

This training will help prepare our national kata players for international competitions.

Florissant renews contract with Meridian Waste Solutions for garbage and recycling services

Meridian Waste Solutions, Inc. has successfully renewed its contract with the city of Florissant and will continue to provide garbage and recycling services to 17,500-plus homes through spring 2021.

“We’ve enjoyed servicing the residents of Florissant for the last eight years with dependable environmental services the city leadership and citizens have come to count on every week,” said Chuck Barcom, area vice president for Meridian Waste. “Renewing our contract is a testament to our service and investment within the City, and we look forward to growing our partnership over the coming years.”

Meridian will continue to provide service at no charge for the Valley of Flowers and Fall Festival events.

Services include once-a-week trash and once-aweek recycling. Yard waste collection is available for an additional fee, and customers can select if they want the service year-round or for three months at a time. Meridian will provide seasonal yard waste pick-ups at no charge to the residents on the second pick-up of the month during April, July, November and December. Bulk pick-up is available on the third pick-up day of the month when scheduled with Meridian in advance.

Greater North County Duck Races scheduled for July 29 at Florissant’s Koch Park Aquatic Center The city of Florissant once again will sponsor the Mayor’s Race at the Famous Annual Greater North County Duck Races, which are scheduled to begin at 10 a.m. on Saturday, July 29 at the Florissant Koch Park Aquatic Center’s Lazy River.

Florissant Mayor Thomas Schneider has issued a challenge to the mayors of Bellefontaine Neighbors, Black Jack, Dellwood, Ferguson and Hazelwood to have the courage to face him as he defends the highly coveted “Mayor’s Race Duck Trophy” which he won in 2016.

“I was fortunate last year to win not only the Greater North County duck trophy but also the Greater North County Chamber of Commerce golf trophy, and proudly displayed both in the Florissant Mayor’s office,” said Schneider. “Having already lost the golf trophy to a lucky team from Ferguson in June, I will do everything I can

to keep the duck trophy in Florissant,” declared a determined Schneider.

“Mayor Schneider will enter this race with both hands tied behind his back,” said Bellefontaine Neighbors Mayor Robert Doerr, “and must drop Ducky from his mouth.” Added James Knowles, Mayor of Ferguson, “I plan to win so that I can put my duck race trophy next to my Mayor’s Cup golf trophy that I won again this year.”

Sponsorship opportunities for the duck tournament are available. For $5 apiece attendees may enter a duck in the competition and receive a duck key chain and free admission to the water park on the day of the event, Saturday, July 29. Learning to grow with ADHD

It’s hard to believe that the new school year will be here before we know it. And for some ADD/ ADHD kids and their parents, this time can often be associated with anxiety and stress. But setting up some reasonable goals now for the upcoming school year can set the tone for a successful academic year.

Each family should set goals based on what is important to them. Meet as a family and discuss a structure from the time your child gets out of bed in the morning to the time they go to bed at night.

Rewards and expectations can also be put in place along with these goals. *The key to setting up goals for school is that they are reasonable and can be easily obtainable.

Suggestion of school year goals • Set up a morning routine and bed time routine during the week.

Sleep is the time when our brains form longterm memories and it also helps with the overall mental and emotional well-being to help enhance their performance in school.

• Set up a time to meet your child’s teacher prior to the start of school Find out about any major projects or other assignments that are coming up during the year.

Learn about the teacher’s expectation for homework. Find out how you can communicate with the teacher throughout the year to keep track of completed and outstanding assignments.

• Set up a study schedule at home that works for everyone’s schedule for completing assignments.

Encourage a study routine and keep distractions

to a minimum and make sure you follow up on what they have been doing during that study time.

Rewarding consistent and positive behavior Staying up a little late on the weekend could be a reward for going to bed on time during the week.

Extra time to watch TV or play video games could be a reward for completing homework assignments. In addition to the rewards, make sure you provide praise and encouragement and acknowledge their strengths whenever possible.

What to do after a bad day or a setback If your child has a bad day, try to re-teach the positive behaviors which will help increase the likelihood of success for the next time. Studies show that children with ADD and ADHD respond well to positive reinforcements and not criticism.

The St. Louis Regional Business Council (RBC) is supporting NPower St. Louis, which will provide certification and training in IT and professional skills training as well as job placement assistance to military veterans and young adults from underserved communities.

The national nonprofit has demonstrated successful results in five major U.S. markets. Over the past five years, NPower has placed more than 1,000 graduates in well-paid careers. In today’s economy, over 50 percent of all jobs require some degree of technology and digital skill, and this is expected to grow to 77 percent by 2020 in the U.S. Of the nearly 6 million jobs expected to require tech skills in the future, labor statistics project a candidate pool of only 3.2 million. It is apparent that St. Louis needs to train more people for these jobs.

FFSD to host back-to-school fair and fun run The Ferguson-Florissant School District will host a back-to-school fair and fun run on Aug. 5 on the grounds of the district’s Administration Building at 1005 Waterford Dr. Registration for the Fun Run begins at 8 a.m. with a one mile run starting at 8:30 a.m. and a yoga/cool down session at 9 a.m. The fair will be held from 9 a.m. – 12:30 p.m.

During the fair, attendees will have the opportunity to receive vital information on curriculum, resources and programs, enjoy fun and educational activities for children and teens, play various games, enjoy main stage enter-

tainment and music and interact with district staff and administrators. Staff members from each of the district’s schools will be on hand to answer questions and provide information on their particular sites. A number of community partners and outside businesses will also be on hand, offering services beneficial to district students and families.

The Back-to-School Fair is free and open to all Ferguson-Florissant School District residents. Classes in the district begin Aug. 9.

Hazelwood Central High junior earns perfect score on ACT

Hazelwood Central High School junior Natalie Fleming recently did something few students in the nation can lay claim to, she received a perfect score on the ACT. Fleming earned a composite score of 36 on the ACT, which assesses students’ academic readiness for college. This was Fleming’s second attempt. Her previous score was a 35.

“I was pretty surprised when I found out I scored a 36 on the ACT,” Fleming said. “Getting a 36 has always been a goal of mine so when I finally got the score, I was ecstatic.”

According to data from 2016, Fleming’s score puts her in the 99.892 percentile, which marks how Fleming’s score compares to others across the country who have taken the ACT. This means she scored higher than a little over 99 percent all of test-takers.

As far as what advice she would give other students who are taking the ACT, Fleming encouraged them to not doubt themselves and know that they can do better.

were offered through the Hazelwood School District’s Parent U program, took the practice test several times and studied with friends outside of school,” Fleming said.

Fleming is still undecided on her major and what university she wants to attend.

The ACT consists of tests in English, mathematics, reading and science. Each test is scored on a scale of 1-36, and a student’s composite score is the average of the four test scores.

Breakfast Tacos Al Pastor Recipe courtesy of Half Baked Harvest Prep time: 10 minutes | Total time: 30 minutes | Servings: 4-6 Ingredients: 2 tablespoons olive oil 1 pound ground chicken or pork 1/2 sweet onion, chopped 2 cloves garlic, minced or grated 2 teaspoons chili powder 1 teaspoon paprika 1 teaspoon, plus pinch, kosher salt, divided 2 chipotle peppers in adobo, chopped 1/2 cup not-from-concentrate orange juice 1/4 cup water 2 cups fresh pineapple chunks, divided 1/4 cup fresh cilantro, chopped 1/4 cup fresh basil, chopped 1 jalapeno, seeded and chopped 1 lime, juice only 4-6 fried eggs 6-8 corn or flour tortillas, warmed sliced avocado feta or cheddar cheese

Directions: In large skillet, heat olive oil over high heat. When oil shimmers, add ground chicken and onion. Cook, stirring often and breaking up meat as it cooks, until chicken is browned, about 5 minutes.

Add garlic, chili powder, paprika, salt, chipotle peppers, orange juice, water and 1 cup pineapple. Reduce heat to medium and simmer until sauce has thickened slightly around chicken, about 10-15 minutes.

Remove from heat and stir in cilantro.

Ingredients: 1 cup basil pesto 1 cup sun-dried tomato spread 2 cups cherry tomatoes, marinated cherry tomatoes or diced tomatoes 6-8 soft-boiled or poached eggs 6-8 scrambled eggs 12 slices grilled or toasted bread olive oil, to taste salt, to taste pepper, to taste 2-3 varieties of soft cheeses 2 cups fresh fruit 1 sliced avocado 2 cups sauteed veggies, such as spinach and mushrooms

Tipping point You see them everywhere; more prevalent than politicians during mid-terms and just as irritating. What are they? Tip cups; propped up next to random cash registers, taped to fast food drive-in windows and even inside toilet stalls. Believe me, it will happen!

Question: Why tip for doing a job you were hired to do?

Remember in the good ol’ days when tips meant: To Insure Prompt Service. Today it means: Total Idiot, Pay Something.

Recently, I went to pick up my take-out pizza. I called, I ordered, I drove, I walked into the joint and stood at the register. Everything up to that point was all about me. The cashier rang up my order. As I prepared to swipe my VISA, she alerted me to the message on the card reader.

“Whoa, little lady, not so fast. Read that important message on the reader first.”

Oh…something new? What could it be; a valuable two-for-one coupon? Maybe I was the millionth customer and had just won extra toppings?

Not so, I looked down to see the vital message flashing at me, “How much tip would you like to add: 10 percent, 15 percent, 20 percent?”

I looked up at the cashier eyeing me greedily awaiting the push of the golden button to increase her fortune.

Awkward.

If I didn’t push something, she still had possession of my pizza and could possibly retaliate by touching my pepperonis or worse, toss on a few nasties to show her displeasure. If I did push a button, it would go against my long held motto, “Ummm, No!” I stuck hard and fast to my values and pushed

the decline button.

Immediately the NO TIP alarm sounded. All employees from the prep area came forward like a scene from “The Walking Dead.” They hobbled forward covered in flour and red sauce and various meat and veggie toppings. They then came to life as they performed one of those song and dances they reserve for people with birthdays at annoying restaurants.

In unison they kicked their legs high and belted out, “That lady is cheap; she is such a creep; beware of your pizza; you sow what you reap!”

They then slunk back into the kitchen.

The cashier pushed a filmy, crushed box towards me then bellowed, “Next customer!”

I was shoved out the door unceremoniously.

Inside my car I blew off the dust from the container and cracked it open to reveal an anchovy and toenail pizza.

Well I’ve got a tip for them. Next time heat up the anchovies; they were a little cold!

Women’s tackle football team take back-toback titles The St. Louis SLAM is the areas women’s tackle football team that plays in the Women’s Football Alliance.

The SLAM played the Tampa Bay Inferno last year in the title game and routed them 38-7. The Inferno wanted revenge as they ripped through their league this year undefeated.

“We know they’ve gotten better this year and we still have to go out and prove we’re the better team on the field,” said St. Louis Captain Taylor Hay. “This game will come down to whichever team makes the least mistakes.”

With that said, the St. Louis squad knew that had to come out on the field and take charge and that is what they accomplished. After the first quarter the SLAM piled up a 21-0 lead and the second quarter saw the Inferno cut into the lead ending in 21-7.

The second half was all in favor of the St. Louis SLAM as they coasted to a 42-15 victory and another title.

The End of Prostate Cancer joins forces with St. Louis Urological Surgeons and Arch Cancer Care to host the ZERO Prostate Cancer Run/Walk this September. The goal is to create Generation ZERO – the first generation of men free of prostate cancer. Participants will run and walk together on Sept.r 16 to fight a disease that takes the life of an American man every 20 minutes. Beat the summer heat with some hot films

For moviegoers, there were some summers where the cinematic stars aligned perfectly. The hotter months of 1984, for instance, featured “Ghostbusters,” “The Karate Kid,” “Gremlins” and the wild ride that was “Indiana Jones and the Temple of Doom.” Five years later, the 1989 summer movie season saw Michael Keaton starring in “Batman,” Mel Gibson and Danny Glover returning for “Lethal Weapon 2” and Sean Connery keeping Harrison Ford in line during “Indiana Jones and the Last Crusade.”

The summer of 2017 also has reasons to head to the local multiplex. “Guardians of the Galaxy Vol. 2” did not disappoint, with Kurt Russell joining Chris Pratt and Zoe Saldana in another irreverent outer space journey. Bradley Cooper had some awesome moments as the voice of Rocket Raccoon while Vin Diesel made sure that everyone knew that he was Groot. With action, classic music and great one-liners, “GOTG Vol. 2” definitely was worth a second viewing.

Marvel Studios was not content with just one summertime entry, however. “Spider-Man: Homecoming” arrived in July, the product of a cooperative deal between Sony and the Walt Disney Company, which owns Marvel Studios. Sony held the character rights for years, but this franchise reboot brings SpiderMan into the Marvel Cinematic Universe. Tom

Holland’s winning performance as the title character also contains the right blend of youth and enthusiasm.

As good as “GOTG Vol. 2” and Spidey are, no other hero or heroine can stop “Wonder Woman.” MSN is reporting that the big screen adaptation will become this summer’s highest grossing film very soon. That’s not surprising given Gal Gadot’s performance and the screenplay’s faithfulness to her comic-books roots.

Gadot’s Wonder Woman is fierce, loyal and won’t shrink from anyone, making this a character many fans are emulating.

The success of “Wonder Woman” also sets the stage for Zack Snyder’s take on “Justice League” in November. Earlier DC Universe movies (“Man of Steel,” “Suicide Squad”) didn’t generate quite the excitement of a Marvel Studios production, but Gal Gadot will make the competition take note as she takes her place in the Justice League.

Christopher Nolan’s name has become synonymous with epic films, and “Dunkirk” is no exception to the rule. Responsible for “Interstellar” and “Inception,” the writer/director looks at one of the biggest wartime evacuations in “Dunkirk.” The title refers to the Battle of Dunkirk, which took place in France in 1940.

As Nolan’s film shows, approximately 400,000

Allied soldiers were stranded in Dunkirk and needed to find a way home.

With critical acclaim and respectable box office returns, “War for the Planet of the Apes” is another reason to buy a movie ticket. The reboot of this classic franchise offered a new take on the characters, especially Andy Serkis’ interpretation of Caesar, leader of the apes. Woody Harrelson also is on hand as the Colonel, an aggressive military leader bent on destroying Caesar and the other simians.

Some smaller films, such as the engaging “Baby Driver” and “The Big Sick,” also are placing movie fans in theater auditoriums this summer. When the mercury rises, all these movies offer a cool way to beat the heat.
