By Charlotte Beard The St. Louis County Parks Foundation is looking to begin a $500,000 project in Kinloch Park but not without the feedback of its area residents.

According to Mark Ohlendorf, President of St. Louis County Parks Foundation, he has sent letters to schools, pastors and ministers in the Kinloch area asking for input and how to reach people in their ministries. Now the foundation is turning to the media to assist in getting the word out that input is wanted from Kinloch’s residents for Kinloch Park’s restoration.

Ohlendorf states that the idea to restore the park originated out of action plans to work with area parks departments.

‘FACELIFT’ from ‘cover projects: South County, West County, and North County. After we discussed all (the) things that we wanted to do with the parks departments, North County asked us to revamp Kinloch Park. A couple years ago they put some new basketball courts in there and they were really nice and apparently are very well used. (Kinloch) wanted to redo the entire park because the bathrooms do not work, and the shelter is probably 20 years old. There are no amenities at all to make it a park. So, we got involved because the (county’s parks department) asked us to include Kinloch Park in the plan.”

Ohlendorf went on to share that because the basketball courts are a more recent implementation, there will likely be no changes made to the amenity. However, the baseball field is needing an overhaul with things such as a backstop and benches for the teams. In addition, the foundation

plans to replace the park’s shelter Ohlendorf states is dilapidated. The plans include the placements of barbecue pits around the new shelter as well as a revamp of the bathrooms which Ohlendorf states have not worked for years. Other amenities include a playground with shade structures, and a family trail that runs completely around the park with pods (small space with playground and adult outdoor exercise equipment) like the implementation the foundation made for Spanish Lake Park in 2018.

In addition to these $500,000 plans to revamp Kinloch Park, Ohlendorf states that the foundation would also like to raise funds to include the wishes of Kinloch’s residents and is requesting their input.

“We really are interested in what the people in the area want. Is there some other type of thing that the people want (like) a splash pad? If we can raise the money, we will put it in there; it all depends on how

much money we can raise. We would like input from the people in the area so we’re not fixing something up that they don’t want to use.”

Ohlendorf stated that with a good plan he is certain that corporations, foundations, and private funding will support St. Louis County Park Foundation’s efforts for Kinloch Park.

The foundation is looking for emailed ideas about any desires for more sporting area amenities, playground area, water features and general information regarding what people would like to be able to do in Kinloch Park.

Ohlendorf is asking that residents, “Let their imaginations run wild. Give us everything and we will put it in if we can. We will try to evaluate it to see if it’s doable.”

Don’t give up “Do not grow weary in well – doing, because in the end you will win, if you faint not” is a scripture in the Bible found in Galatians 6:9. You have also heard people say “Don’t give up and don’t give in.” No doubt, you may have also been told at some point in your life that “your blessing is right around the corner.” These statements all indicate that if one perseveres, success or victory will eventually be obtained.

These statements have been repeated throughout the years because they are true and folks throughout the decades have witnessed the outcome of this kind of tenacity.

It is therefore, very disheartening to witness more and more people, often young people, giving up and giving in to the challenges of life today. The pressures often are so intense and media has caused them often to be so repetitive that a person can begin to feel that there is no way out or that there is no solution to the crisis in which they may have found themselves.

The experience shared by others is often withheld because mentorship and caring for our neighbors exists less and less these days and people are often left alone to sink or swim or figure out their own solutions. When I was in high school, one of my teachers would write this saying on the blackboard and leave it up for a while, “Experience is a dear school, but a fool will learn in no other.”

As a society, it seems that we have turned away from “loving thy neighbor”

and “looking out for each other,” and have fallen into a more Machiavellian form of existence such as, “Do unto others before they do unto you” or at least “you get yours, while I get mine.” In this manner only the strong survive, or only those who have an edge up at the beginning end up surviving. That edge up could be economic, racial, social, educational or environmental.

The truth is that we all are entitled to the same opportunities because none of us is responsible for our own existence.

So why should we dare to think that we are better than anyone else.

Perhaps if others see that a person is diligently striving and showing a determination to succeed or overcome, others may be more inclined to lend a helping hand.

We are faced with the challenge of “Which comes first, the chicken or the egg.” Do we offer our assistance first or do we wait to see the effort manifested and then offer to help? It seems that a foregone conclusion already exists among many young people and others that nobody really cares so why should they!

If that is the reality of the situation, then, it becomes imperative for those of good will and those with positive intentions to step forward and begin the process.

We have a project that can afford anyone the opportunity to be a mover and shaker in this community by helping to sponsor shirts for our high school

seniors that say “I’M ALIVE. LET ME SURVIVE.” This lets these young people who will be our adults of tomorrow know that we love them and are counting on them to carry our society forward. It lets them know that we recognize them as individuals and it lets them know that we will respect and protect their growth.

Pine Lawn breaks ground on redevelopment of city park Nothing more depicts St. Louis’ strong will to transform into a better place and sectors coming together like the project that happened in the city of Pine Lawn with the rejuvenation of Pelton Jackson Park on July 10. A groundbreaking comprised of city leaders, elected officials, residents and play advocates.

Community leadership and advocacy groups have banded together to transform the old, worn park at 6398 Wyndam Ave. into a community gathering place, a place for healing, a place for play. Collectively, Mayor Terry Epps, Pine Lawn Board of Alderman, Planning Design Studio and Play 4 ALL, social impact division of Cunningham Recreation saw a vision for a place that would welcome nearby residents, build stronger neighborhood bonds and give children a much-needed place to play. Funding includes the Municipal Park Grant Commission of St. Louis County and Missouri’s Department of Natural Resources along with a local business, Royal Foods Market and a philanthropist through Vario Philanthropy.

The Pelton Jackson Park will include a brand-new playground, renovated restroom facility and refurbished basketball court. This community space will serve as the capstone of an endeavor that has been a labor of love, driven by the will to fulfill a community’s potential.

“More importantly, the playground is an instrument that demonstrates how multiple groups can work together for the greater good,” said Epps.

Moonlight Ramble goes virtual, adds century The annual full moon in August is traditionally a time when thousands of cyclists from across the Midwest take to the streets of Downtown St. Louis at night to explore the sights and sounds of the city without traffic. This iconic nighttime bicycle ride brings together riders of all ages and abilities for the longest running night ride in the United States. This year however in light of the COVID19 pandemic the Moonlight Ramble will be taking place virtually.

“Canceling this year’s in-person Moonlight Ramble is extremely disappointing for everyone involved, but it was clearly the course we needed to follow from a health and safety perspective,” said Matt Helbig, CEO of Big River Race Management the organizers of the event. “The ramble and the many related events and activities during ride week are part of the fabric that makes St. Louis such a great place to call home. We look forward to coming together next year.”

In spite of the cancellation of the in-person event, the ride will continue on virtually this year adding a “Daylight Edition” of the ramble.

“Without the ability to provide a safe and secure course at night, we’re encouraging all of our riders to complete their virtual rides during daylight hours,” said Helbig.

Riders can complete a general ride on their own or take on the new Moonlight Ramble Daylight Edition Century where riders can ride when and where they want in as many sessions as needed to reach 100 miles.

“We’re hoping the century adds a fun twist to the virtual component of our event,” said Helbig.

Big River is proud to name Trailnet as this year’s charity partner.

A portion of each registration from this year’s event will go to Trailnet to help them advance their mission to foster healthy, active and vibrant communities where walking, biking and the use of public transit are a way of life.

Real estate developer appointed to Normandy Joint Executive Governing Board The Missouri State Board of Education appointed Ronald L. Roberts to the Joint Executive Governing Board (JEGB) for the Normandy Schools Collaborative, which serves nearly 3,300 students. His term begins immediately and runs through June 30, 2023. Roberts will be replacing Pamela Westbrooks-Hodge, who was appointed to the State Board of Education in January

2020.

Roberts is a managing principal with Ridge Graves, LLC, a real estate development and investment enterprise in St. Louis.

During his 20-year career in real estate development and finance, Roberts has been involved in the underwriting, financing, planning, developing and constructing of thousands of homes across the United States and in

Metro Transit and Via launching new on-demand transit service in the St. Louis Region Metro Transit is partnering with Via, the world’s leader in public mobility solutions, to launch a new on-demand transit service for the St. Louis region.

The new service, called Via Metro STL, will be introduced in two areas – in southwest St. Louis County including Fenton and Valley Park, and in North St. Louis County.

With Via Metro STL, transit riders in these two parts of the region will be able to hail a vehicle directly from their smartphone using the Via app, and can travel to any location within the service area during operating hours.

Via Metro STL is a shared ride service, and Via’s advanced technology matches multiple passengers headed in the same direction to provide quick and efficient shared trips, without lengthy detours or inconvenient schedules.

The on-demand service will be available in the Fenton/ Valley Park area seven days a week from 5 a.m. to 9 p.m., and in North St. Louis County seven days a week from 11:30 p.m. to 5:30 a.m. Transit riders will be able to try Via Metro STL service for free through the end of August. After August, rides on Via Metro STL will cost $2.

“We are very excited to introduce this new on-demand service. Via Metro STL provides our customers with a convenient and affordable transportation option that they can request when they need it, directly from their phone or mobile device,” said Jessica Mefford-Miller, Executive Director of Metro Transit.

“The mobility needs of the St. Louis region are constantly evolving. Innovative on-demand and microtransit options like Via Metro STL allow us to grow and adapt to better meet the changing needs of our customers,” Requesting a ride on Via Metro STL is easy. Using the Via app, transit riders can book their ride by selecting pickup and drop-off location within the service area. Once a ride is booked, riders are directed to their exact pickup spot, and they can see the real-time location of their vehicle, the driver’s name and other information to help them spot their ride.

“Cities and public transit agencies across the country are increasingly turning to technology to enable affordable, efficient and convenient mobility options that complement and extend existing public transit infrastructure,” said Daniel Ramot, Via CEO and co-founder. “We are proud to partner with Metro Transit to introduce an on-demand public transit system in St. Louis and support the community and its

residents’ transportation needs.”

Garden Villas North Assisted and Retirement Living Community celebrated the 100th birthday of resident Nate Crump. The Crump family held a birthday parade for July 18 at Garden Villas North, located at 4505 Parker Road, in Black Jack.

Crump served in the Armed Forces until 1946, upon which he resumed his studies at Lincoln University and graduated with a chemistry degree in 1948. He worked at the DuGood Analytical Laboratory in St. Louis and was sought out by the Urban League to ensure hiring of minorities which in 1952, led his science career to Universal Match Company for research and development for Hanley Industries and St. Louis Children’s Hospital. In 1962, Crump began a 25-year career at McDonnell Aircraft as a test engineer, working on the Mercury, Gemini, Apollo, Mavis, SkyLab and Space Shuttle Programs and on the F-4, F-15, F-18 and D.C. 10 Aircraft Programs.

He is listed in “Who’s Who in Black America and Internationally” and “Men of Achievement.” He was inducted in the Greater St. Louis Amateur Baseball Hall of Fame in 1992 and has served on the board for 27 years.

In 1948 Kansas City Monarch’s offered Crump a position but he declined for his career at Du-Good. He accepted the offer to play a couple of exhibition games with them at Sportsman Park.

Vice President Herbert H. Humphrey and the Secretary of Labor Willard Wirtz invited Crump to participate and serve on a Minority Youth Motivation Task Force (“Plans for Progress Program” forerunner to Affirmative Action).

Normandy High School students receive awards, scholarships for excellence Three Normandy High School students received awards or scholarships for their hard work and excellence. These scholarships will be used towards furthering their education and skillset.

Margaret Mischeaux, an incoming senior at Normandy High School, received the Huber Award for her performance at the Virtual Spring Recital for Opera Theater of St. Louis Artist-in-Training Program. The award is the highest honor a junior can receive.

Taylor Allen, Normandy High School class of 2020, received the Jobs for America’s Graduates (JAG) Class of 2020 Educational Grant. Allen plans to attend college to become a pharmacist.

Tommie Pollard, Normandy High School class of 2020, received the Friends of Normandy School District Steven N. Cousins Scholarship. Pollard, the class of 2020 valedictorian, plans to attend the University of Central Missouri to study nursing.

St. Louis Region Money Smart Essay Contest awards local students $3,500 in scholarships The St. Louis Regional Financial Empowerment Coalition, in partnership with United Way of Greater St. Louis, recently awarded scholarships to three St. Louis-area students who participated in the Money Smart Kid Essay Contest. Students in sixth through eighth grade from schools around the region were asked to demonstrate their knowledge of money management and develop and apply their own money management ideas through their essay.

Anthony Holmes, a seventh grader at North County Christian School in Florissant, was the contest’s grand prize winner and received a $2,000 scholarship. Second place winner Sophia Lundry, a seventh grader at Parkway Central Middle School in Chesterfield, won $1,000 and Blake Schaper, a seventh grader at Fortitude School in Alton, Illinois, received $500 for third place.

Essay contest winners were also able to identify local nonprofits to receive a donation on behalf of the students. Nonprofits selected were Affinia Healthcare Foundation (selected by Holmes), Girl Scouts of Eastern Missouri (selected by Lundry) and the 5 A’s Animal Shelter in Alton (selected by Schaper).

Sponsors of the essay contest include Stifel Bank & Trust, Commerce Bank and Midwest BankCentre.

“The Money Smart Kid Essay Contest is a way to engage local youth, schools and nonprofit organizations in financial education and to demonstrate the importance of good money management decisions,” said Debbie Irwin, community economic development director, United Way of Greater St. Louis. “Thank you to our sponsors and to all of the students and schools that participated.”

Baseball in O’Fallon with the Hoots The O’Fallon Hoots play in the Prospect Wood Bat League with home games at the CarShield Field in O’Fallon.

With the cancellation of the Prospect League for 2020, the local team is playing just about every day.

The Hoots are hosting 30 games in O’Fallon in a season that started July 2 and will play through Aug. 14.

An original Ambush player comes back to the team One of the original members of the current St. Louis Ambush franchise is coming home. Free agent defender Richard Schmermund has signed a three year deal, the organization announced. Per league and team policies, no further details have been disclosed.

Schmermund is a local product who grew up in Ferguson. He played prep soccer at McCluer High School and club soccer for Scott Gallagher and Lou Fusz. Schmermund’s collegiate career was spent at St. Louis Community College, where he was awarded First Team All Conference.

Prior to joining the Ambush, Richard played professionally with the Illinois Piasa (PASL). Schmermund joined the Ambush for their 2013-14 inaugural season, his first of five seasons with the club, leaving as a free agent following the 2017-18 season. He spent the 2018-19 season with the Orlando SeaWolves.

After starting the 2019-20 season with Orlando, Schmermund was traded to the Baltimore Blast, where he finished the season.

In 125 career games, he has posted 48 goals and 24 assists while blocking 109 shots.

Ambush General Manager Jeff Locker said, “It’s always great to have a mix of local talent on your team and we’re pleased to welcome Richard Schmermund home.”

Ambush Head Coach Hewerton said, “Since leaving the Ambush, Schmermund has matured and gained experience playing for different organizations and it’s time for him to come home and help make our roster stronger.”

The Tritons recorded one of the highest GPAs in the nation this past academic year, posting a 3.51.

UMSL also earned the Team Academic All-GLVC award and had eight players earn individual Academic All-GLVC accolades.

A total of 250 schools across all three NCAA divisions, the NAIA and NJCAA submitted GPA’s of 3.0 or above to earn the association’s Academic Team Award, with 95 of those schools earning Presidents Special Recognition Honors, finishing with a team GPA of 3.5 and above.

Add Asian flair to summer classics

– SUDOKU –

Fill in the blank squares in the grid, making sure that every row, column and 3-by-3 box includes all the digits 1 through 9.

Asian Carne Asada Tacos Prep time: 15 minutes | Cook time: 5 minutes | Servings: 6 Ingredients:

1 1/2 pounds beef skirt steak 1/2 cup seasoned rice vinegar 2 tablespoons sugar 2 teaspoons sambal oelek (Asian chili garlic sauce) 1/2 teaspoon kosher salt 1/4 cup soy sauce 2 tablespoons olive oil 2 teaspoons ancho chili powder 1/2 teaspoon ground cumin

Pickled Onions: 1/4 cup water 1 medium red onion, halved, thinly sliced corn tortillas, warmed roasted tomato or tomatillo salsa cilantro sprigs sliced avocados thinly sliced radishes

Directions:

Using fork, pierce steak at 1/2-inch intervals. In large bowl, whisk vinegar, sugar, sambal oelek and salt. Reserve 1/4 cup mixture for later use. Add soy sauce, oil, chili powder and cumin to remaining vinegar mixture. Add steak; turn to coat. Let stand 10 minutes to marinate.

To make pickled onions: In medium microwaveable bowl, combine water and reserved vinegar mixture. Microwave 2-3 minutes, or until hot. Add onions, submerging in vinegar mixture.

Let stand at room temperature until cool.

Preheat grill to high heat. Grill steaks 1-2 minutes on each side, or until medium rare. Let stand 5 minutes before slicing against

grain into thin strips.

Serve with tortillas, salsa, pickled onions, cilantro, avocado and radishes.

Serve immediately with whipped cream and cinnamon.

Remembering Robin Williams

Born and raised in South St. Louis, Steve Bryan is now based in Anaheim, California, and has been allowed access to movie and television sets to see actors and directors at work. Though his writing has taken him far from St. Louis, Steve is, at heart, still the same wide-eyed kid who spent countless hours watching classic movies at neighborhood theaters.

rolific director, producer and writer Garry Marshall introduced an alien character on his popular 1970’s sitcom “Happy Days” in Season 5 that became a sensation. Robin Williams, who had appeared on “The Richard Pryor Show” and a reboot of “Laugh-In,” played Mork, an alien from Ork who wanted to take Richie Cunningham (Ron Howard) to his home planet. Williams’ manic energy was captivating, extremely funny and led to the spinoff series “Mork & Mindy.”

Williams passed away in 2014, but his legacy lives on in reruns, comedy specials and a long list of movies. He starred in “Popeye,” a 1980 live-action adaptation of the popular cartoon and comic book hero. Williams’ comedic talents helped him morph into the spinach-eating sailor and Shelley Duvall played Olive Oyl, the woman who became his girlfriend. Robert Altman directed this adaptation and it is a fun film to watch if you come across an old DVD or see it on a streaming service.

“Good Morning, Vietnam,” a film based on the experiences of Adrian Cronauer, a disc jockey for the Armed Forces Network, was a solid vehicle for Williams. In character as Cronauer, he unleashes an unrelenting barrage of jokes, humorous voices as well as some great rock-n-roll tunes for the Vietnam

troops. Williams acting ability and improvisational skills earned him critical praise as well as several award nominations and wins.

1993’s “Mrs. Doubtfire” almost compels you to watch it when it shows up on cable. Based on “Alias Madame Doubtfire,” it tells the story of Daniel Hillard (Williams), a voice actor who abruptly quits his job. After his wife

files for divorce, Daniel disguises himself as a proper English housekeeper to be closer to his children. “Mrs. Doubtfire” has a plethora of memorable scenes, especially the one where Daniel transforms into his alter-ego and back again several times in a restaurant bathroom.

Williams earned an Oscar for “Good Will Hunting,” a compelling film written by Matt Damon and Ben Affleck. Damon plays Will Hunting, a janitor at M.I.T. who has a brilliant analytical mind. He quietly solves complex mathematical problems written on a blackboard in the hallway and catches the attention of Professor Gerald Lambeau (Stellan Skarsgard). Lambeau helps him stay out of jail and get into therapy to deal with his personal issues. Williams is outstanding here as Dr. Sean Maguire, the therapist who has incredible dialogues with the young genius.

No tribute to Robin Williams is complete without “Aladdin,” the 1992 Disney animated classic. He plays the fast-talking Genie whose newest master is Aladdin, a young man who lives on the streets. Suffice it to say, Williams steals the show as the funny, compassionate resident of the magic lamp. His energetic performance here is the perfect showcase for his boundless talent for comedy.

Rest in peace, Robin Williams. You always put a smile on people’s faces and still do.

‘Yeggs’ is a comic series about Robert and Bill, two rabbits who have opened their own egg franchise in the Midwest (St. Louis area). We follow their day to day lives, watching as they go about the hectic task of preparing for their one big day every year. Nothing a six-pack of lemon-scented Pledge can’t take care of. Mayhem, chaos and civil unrest, you say? Well there’s nothing left to destroy…so there’s that. Move along.

Come on 2020, you can do better than that.

What else have you got up your dirty little sleeve?

How about something called MASK RASH! Eww! Disgusting! Come on now, that’s just too cruel; too much; too… What the heck’s mask rash?

As if we didn’t have enough to worry about this new problem has cropped up. Think about it.

We’re asked to wear a tight-fitting piece of cloth over our breathing and speaking parts for hours on end. Inside the confines of that contraption things are happening…gross things.

When we speak through it, we are releasing germs and droplets which all collect inside the mask. After a day it becomes filled with mouth moisture, face sweat, skin flakes, nose juices, sneeze and cough goo and old crusty make-up, which all piles up in an assortment of icky bacteria.

After a time, this can produce a condition called “maskne” which rhymes with acne and is a type of ailment caused by locked in dirt and oil in the pores underneath the mask. Tight-fitting masks and plastic PPE visors can also cause indentations. This leaves red and blue markings around the forehead and below the eyes causing the face to look like it’s been punched around like a birthday piñata.

That’s not all. No, no. The ear grippers are often

Time for a change too tight and rub against the skin which leaves the back of the ear scuffed and the elastic covered in skin scrapings. That’s plenty to freak us out, but there’s another layer of yuck. Since the front part of the mask is the filter, it becomes covered with pollution particles and likely--COVID virus!

A-a-and how do we typically remove them? By pulling off the skin-covered elastic then pinching the cootie-covered front between our fingers, which passes all of the gunk onto our hands. We then wipe our eyes to remove the accumulated day’s grime totally cancelling out the reason for wearing protection.

So people, just like a baby’s soiled pants, please change your face diaper and do it often.
