Construction set to begin on $63 million POWERplex Sports Resort, a youth sports campus on the site of the former St. Louis Outlet Mall

By Charlotte Beard After Aug. 30, construction will begin at the former St. Louis Outlet Mall to convert it to POWERplex Sports Resort, a $63 million campus for youth sports tourism. The project’s lead developer for the campus that will cover 160 plus acres is Big Sports Properties.

“We have St. Louis County Councilman, Mark Harder to thank for directing Dan Buck to the St. Louis Outlet Mall,” stated Tim Davidson, city of Hazelwood Communications Manager. “When Dan Buck was trying to put the project in Chesterfield, they rejected his request for additional time to create the financing he needed for the project. So, Mark Harder suggested that (he) consider St. Louis Outlet Mall.”

Dan Buck, Managing Partner for Big Sports Properties states, “We think it can generate

over $300 million a year at maturity for the St. Louis region and that’s including all the hotels that will benefit in about a 20-mile radius around the campus. Obviously where people stay is also where they eat, so restaurants see a big up-tick. When you draw 2.9 million new visitors to a region that can have a huge economic impact – not with just what happens on our campus but throughout the whole 20-mile radius that surrounds us. When you look at venues around the country that have been built you see that the ripple effect of economic growth stretches well beyond the immediate acreage of the sports complex. It has great economic impact on the whole region.

Because we run 50 weekends a year, there’s no real slow down because we have so many indoor and outdoor venues that allows us to

have a very steady flow of tourism throughout the entire calendar year.”

Davidson adds, “Hopefully it will be a successful endeavor and generate additional tax revenue for the city. It will be a great usage of a mall that has been deteriorating over the last few years and bring in more people (to the city). Phase 2 plans for the complex includes having hotels added to the complex to accommodate parents that bring in their kid for a sports tournament. They would be able to stay in the hotel and kids would have a chance to stay in some dorms that would be set up at the sports complex.”

Don’t let your summer be a simple one I absolutely love the summer and fall.

Winter is not a favorite of mine. As the weather becomes warmer, please remember to check on the elderly. You will need to consume lots of water to stay hydrated.

Enjoy the outdoors, this is not the time of the year to be indoors.

You can even consider having a garage sale. Volunteering for an outside event is always an option. Making sure your lawn is manicured and flowers are watered will make you feel good about being a homeowner.

This is the time of the year for a family and friends picnic. I love a good tuna sandwich this time of the year. Of course, you want to find a good summer read. My book is on Amazon. “My Strength Is Your Strength”. Tell me what you think.

‘Footloose’ cuts loose on Florissant stage

LWVMO President Evelyn Maddox introduced Missouri Secretary of State Jay Ashcroft who commended the league for its tireless work in encouraging civic participation and education.

“I just appreciate being part of this and appreciate what you stand for,” Ashcroft said. He thanked the league for its nonpartisan approach to promoting civic engagement before reading the governor’s proclamation recognizing the centennial of the ratification of the 19th Amendment.

Maddox said league members look forward to working with Ashcroft to ensure that elections are free, fair and accessible.

League members from Columbia, Kansas City, Moberly, Sedalia and St. Louis posed for photos by a plaque near the Rotunda that the league installed in 1931 as a tribute “to those women in Missouri whose courageous work opened the opportunities of complete citizenship to all women in the state.”

Both Davidson and Buck shared that one of the primary benefits for using the mall for the project is that the existing structure and layout require less construction than other sites that may have been considered.

The POWERplex will accommodate baseball, softball, volleyball, beach volleyball, pickleball, basketball, seven on seven football, hockey, dance, cheerleading, lacrosse, field hockey, ultimate frisbee and major wrestling events. Six new sports venues specifically created to accommodate the needs of each sport are being designed both inside and outside the 1.5 million square foot former shopping mall.

Buck stated, “We’ll host over 180 events and tournaments a year and those will be in a variety of different sports. What’s great about our spaces and how we’re designing them – they can be used for multiple sports. For example, the volleyball and basketball venue that has 26 hard courts can be converted to 46 wrestling mats (or) 60 pickleball courts. We can host a wide range of expos and conferences in that space as well. It’s 170,000 square feet of large open space. So, with the ability to host a wide range of different activities, events, tournaments, conferences, clinics, camps – we will have a very diversified calendar that allows us to utilize the large spaces in a variety of different ways.”

Hazelwood West High School student-athlete named Gatorade Missouri Boys’ Track & Field Athlete of the Year Hazelwood West High School’s Justin Robinson has been named the 2018-2019 Gatorade Missouri Boys Track & Field Athlete of the Year.

The award recognizes both athletic excellence and high standards of academic achievement and character demonstrated on and off the track, and distinguishes Robinson as the best high school boys’ track and field athlete in Missouri.

Robinson, who just completed his junior year, won three individual events and anchored the winning 4x200 relay team at the Missouri Class 5 State Championships this past spring.

He won the 100-meter dash with a time of 10.56 seconds, the 200-meter in 21.96 seconds, and the 400-meter in a state-record time of 46.30 seconds; his performance also helped the Hazelwood West Wildcats win the Class 5 team championship.

Robinson’s season-best time of 44.84 seconds in the 400 ranked as the nation’s top performance among prep runners in 2019 at the time of his selection; that time also ranks second in American prep history.

He also volunteers locally as a mentor for young athletes and maintains a B average in the classroom.

“Justin has become the best high school 400 runner in the U.S., but that’s not his goal,” West High School coach Tim Levine said. “His goal is to be the best 400 runner, period. For the first time

in my coaching career, one of my athletes has a legitimate chance to be an Olympian. It’s no guarantee, but the talent, work ethic, focus, and intangibles are all there.”

Robinson is the second Hazelwood West student-athlete to earn this recognition, following Daniel Harris during the 1999-2000 school year.

Aug. 10: Road Rally fundraiser

Soroptimist International of Greater St. Louis, a volunteer organization for business and professional women, is pleased to announce its second annual Road Rally fundraiser and is looking for participants and sponsors. Participants in the Road Rally will leave from Atonement Lutheran Church beginning at 10 a.m. and embark on a journey through Florissant and Hazelwood. The Road Rally will end at an undisclosed location where the fun will continue with lunch, live music provided by Dennis Schilli-

go and activities for the young and young at heart. The entry fee is $50 per car up to four adults and $10 for each additional adult (kids under 12 free). Each team must have a least two people, a driver and a navigator. This is a family friendly event, no pets or alcohol allowed. Prizes will be awarded to the top three teams. This is not a race. Turn by turn instructions are clear and concise with fun riddles and witty route specific questions between turns. Sponsors are also needed to make this a successful event.

Sponsorship levels are Compact $100, Sedan $250, Truck $500 and Luxury $1,000. Aug. 15: Fundraiser event

Operation Food Search, a nonprofit hunger relief organization, will hold its third annual Party for Packs from 5:30 to 10 p.m. at OFS’s headquarters located at 1644 Lotsie Blvd. The cost

is $20 in advance and $30 at the door.

OFS’s Friends Board, a diverse group of young professionals vested in feeding the community’s hungry, is presenting the event which features a variety of local food and drink tastings.

There will be a silent auction, as well as raffle tickets available for purchase.

Proceeds from Party for Packs will support Operation Backpack, which provides weekend meals to food-insecure kids throughout the school year.

Baseball in O’Fallon on a roll The defending West Division champion River City Rascals baseball club plays in the Frontier League with home games at the friendly confines of the CarShield Field in O’Fallon.

As mentioned each week in my articles, the team has had several players move on to the next level of baseball to the Major Leagues.

In saying that, the squad has continued to fill in the openings on the field and last week won seven of

the 10 games played that were right at the top in the league.

Still chipping away, the Rascals presently are three games out of first place and a contender in the wild card possibility with about a month left in the season. * Never give up

Rascals’ players pick up more hardware A few roster players took home awards last week thanks to Andrew Penner winning the Player of the Week and Micah Kaczor earning Pitcher of the Week.

Penner hit .500 (9-18) with three home runs and drove in seven. He hit safely in all six games the Rascals played, recording an RBI in four of the games and hitting a home run in three different games and helped River City to a 4-2 week.

The 24-year-old is in his first year in the Frontier League joining the Rascals from Cal State Bakersfield. So far this year Penner has 59 hits, eight doubles, four w w w. s e n i o r s h e l p i n g s e n i o r s . c o m / s t l o u i s c e n t r a l home runs, 31 RBI, and a .827 OPS. His .304 batting average ranks him fifth in the league among active players.

Kaczor pitched 8 1/3 innings of scoreless baseball this week against division rival Southern Illinois Miners. He struck out seven while walking none in his Friday outing and limited the Miners to four hits.

Kaczor joined the Rascals, from Eastern Tennessee State, last month and since signing, the Brentwood, Tennessee native has dominated with a 2-1 record, a 1.45 ERA in 24.2 IP and 15 strikeouts. * Leaders of the pack Lindenwood University’s basketball team honored for classroom work Lindenwood women’s basketball won an NCAA program-record 21 games this season.

She is the first Lindenwood women’s basketball player to earn Academic All-American accolades.

Additionally, Bildner, Lexie Moe and Charisse Williams were recognized as Scholar-Athletes by the MIAA for maintaining a 3.5 GPA and earning All-Conference honors.

Megan Foster earned Academic Excellence plaudits for maintaining a cumulative 4.0 GPA. “I am very proud of this team and their commitment to academic excellence,” Lindenwood head coach Katie Falco said. “It has been fun to see their hard work pay off, and to have their successes in the classroom be recognized on a national level.”

New league for the basketball Lions After spending its first seven years in the NCAA as members of the Mid-America Intercollegiate Athletics Association (MIAA), Lindenwood women’s basketball team will join the Great Lakes Valley Conference (GLVC) for the 2019-20 season. The move to the GLVC will help to centralize the schedule for the Lions, with three opponents within 45 miles of each other, nine within under 200 miles, and all 15 conference opponents within 300 miles. * Classroom then the court Gary Baute, a St. Louis native, may be educated in business but he lives and breathes sports. Can Disney keep the box office magic coming?

Though his writing has taken him far from St. Louis, Steve is, at heart, still the same wide-eyed kid who spent countless hours watching classic movies at neighborhood theaters.

Patrons that attend “Aladdin,” “Toy Story 4” and “The Lion King” earn points and bonus awards for each movie. Despite some reservations on the part of critics, each film performed well and will become part of the studios planned streaming service, Disney Plus. The House of Mouse has even been credited with saving the summertime box office.

With “Avengers: Endgame” now in the rear-view mirror, the story arc that started in 2008 with “Iron Man” movie is now over. Marvel Studios, arguably Disney’s most valuable player, isn’t quite done yet.

At the recent San Diego Comic-Con, the studio made some exciting announcements about Phase 4, the movies that will carry the Marvel Cinematic Universe (MCU) forward. Scarlett Johansson kicks things off in 2020 with “The Black Widow,” a film that delves into Natasha’s mysterious past.

In San Diego, Kevin Feige, president of Marvel Studios, also talked about “Doctor Strange in the Multiverse of Madness,” a sequel to the 2016 adventure, with Benedict Cumberbatch returning as the mystical hero. The title alludes to a sequence in “Avengers: Infinity War” where Dr. Strange combined multiple timelines and universes to find one possible way for the Avengers to beat inter-galactic bad guy Thanos.

“The Fantastic Four” also is heading to the MCU after years of what

can be called misguided efforts with Marvel’s first family of superheroes. I do respect Roger Corman’s 1990’s version of the characters, however, which was made for a just one million dollars just to maintain the cinematic rights. The other movie adaptations failed to take advantage of the true potential of this team.

With Marvel Studios in charge, this one has got to be good.

Disney hasn’t forgotten its other children in favor of Marvel, though. “Frozen II,” the sequel to the 2013 film that became a phenomenon, arrives in theaters on November 22. This time, Elsa, along with Anna, Kristoff, Olaf and Sven, head out to find the source of Elsa’s abilities. The official trailer hints that her powers may be needed to save the world.

On December 20, “Star Wars: The Rise of Skywalker” ends a saga that literally began a long time ago in a galaxy far, far away: the 1970’s.

Episode 4 debuted in the summer of 1977, spawning sequels, animated adventures and comic books while becoming a permanent part of the pop culture landscape. Rey (Daisy Ridley) is now the last known Jedi and she, along with the Resistance, will face off against the First Order.

This chapter reportedly closes the book on Luke and his father, clearing the way for the next generation.

All things considered, I think Regal Cinemas is wrong about the “Summer of Disney.” The studio has enough clout to claim all four seasons.

‘Yeggs’ is a comic series about Robert and Bill, two rabbits who have opened their own egg franchise in the Midwest (St. Louis area). We follow their day to day lives, watching as they go about the hectic task of preparing for their one big day every year. Moore On Life My out-ofstate kids and their babies are still here. I think they’ve become squatters. If they stay one more week they can legally claim residency and demand all rights to my house and property.

I thought they just came to visit. I didn’t expect them to bring along their appetites too. Now all of a sudden I’m expected to feed this horde and I’ve forgotten how to cook for a group this size.

Little did they know when they left the nest years ago I packed up the kitchen along with them.

I now depend on Grubhub deliveries, doggy bags of mystery and making reservations.

Oh sure, I’ll cook the occasional take-and-bake pizza when I’m feeling all adventurous. But it’s really just to light up the burners and singe off the cobwebs and chase away any other vermin that might have set up house in my oven.

I tried starving these people, but they found the chicken nuggets I bought at the big box store twelve years ago. It was a package of 10,000. There were 900 left. Who knows how long they’ve been around? The expiration date had long ago been destroyed by freezer burn. But they found the bundle jammed beneath my husband’s ice cream collection. I should tell him it’s been ransacked and eaten. He’ll be absolutely livid, but the mob insisted they had to have something for breakfast.

Now the nuggets are gone and they’re in the living room wailing for something to eat.

“Okay, Okay.

Give me a minute. I’ll round up something,” I say as I try and stall.

Bingo! I know of a food source.

I scurry out to the garage. Between the two cars there are three kiddie car seats – a gold mine of possibilities.

I pull out the first seat. Underneath are two half-empty juice boxes, fifteen goldfish crackers and a partially eaten cookie. The next one I tip over pours out a cupful of Cheerios, ten fruit snacks fused together and some browned apple slices.

I strike the motherlode on the last one: a nearly full carton of Teddy Grahams, seven cheese puffs, a squished container of applesauce and two lollipops covered in hair: nothing a little rinsing off can’t fix.

“Dinner’s ready!” I yell.

Half-baked Ideas
