Gesher Music Festival works to share history and forge a link between different communities By Sara Hardin This month the Gesher Music Festival returns for its seventh season to present chamber music performances inspired by the experiences of the Jewish community. The festival, named for the Hebrew word for “bridge,” aspires to use the stories and history of the Jewish people to build links between differing communities. “What we’re about is building bridges between different communities, such as older and younger audiences, different ethnic groups and people with different music interests,” explained Kathleen Sitzer, Producer for the Gesher Music Festival. “All of this is done with music that has in some way a connection to the Jewish experience.” The festival utilizes a mix of formal performances, more relaxed discussion-based performances and community outreach to achieve its goal of sharing the selected music with a wide range of audience members. Musical selections will revolve around this year’s theme for the festival, War & Peace. “This is the third year we’ve done a partnership with the Missouri History Museum,” said Dana Hotle, Director of the Gesher Music Festival. “One of their exhibits now is a World War I exhibit. 2017 is the 100th anniversary of America’s entry into the war. That was a point of inspiration for this War & Peace theme. The history of the Jewish
people is one of a lot of war. There has been a lot of tragedy in the community. There’s a lot of material for us to pull on for this theme of War & Peace and how you find peace after so much tragedy. How do you stay hopeful? Each concert links to that.”
The festival’s kickoff is a free Meet the Musicians event at The Vino Gallery on Aug. 10 at 5:30 p.m. Family concerts, lectured performances and more formal performances are scheduled throughout the week of the festival. The final performance will be held at the St. Louis Jewish Community Center on Aug. 20 at 3p.m. Hotle, who also performs in the festival as a clarinet player, explains that the intimate settings of the performances offer some great opportunities to grow as a musician and interact with the program’s audiences. “The focus is very much outward and collaborative and about the entire St. Louis
community, bringing them in and engaging them through this great music,” said Hotle. “We have an incredible roster of musicians from all over the country. These phenomenal musicians bring the music to life. As an artist, that is so inspiring. To play with fresh energy and new ideas and different perspectives - it’s just very invigorating and inspiring to work with these incredible artists. We interact with the audience a lot during the events. You get really immediate feedback as the artists about what we’re creating.” The quality of the musicianship within the festival is certainly something to be acknowledged, as many of the artists involved are recognized nationwide for their talents and achievements. “It’s such a wonderful group of people that get along so well, both personally and musically, that they relish the opportunity to come back to St. Louis to work together again,” said Sara Sitzer, Artistic Director for the Gesher Music Festival. “The musicians come from New York, Los Angeles, Chicago, and beyond (and several from here in St. Louis), and the sum of their accomplishments is ridiculously impressive. Sometimes we laugh about the fact that, for the first several years of the festival, we called it See ‘BRIDGE’ page 2
